I was trying to figure out what happened. Then the second plane hit the other tower. The first thing I did was call my manager at work and told her what had just happened. She is from New York. At first she did not believe me so i put the phone by the TV. Thats when the president came on and said we were under terriost attack. I had to go out but stayed in touch with my manager by cell phone and also took notes to fill in people at work when i got there. I could not believe this was happening. I sat down and disguised the event with my kids. To let them know that they were safe. Also that to say a special prayer that nite for all that lost their lives because of it. Then we finished watching the news that nite. That was a day I will never forget. To go to sleep in darkness to wake up to the world being tore apart. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was traveling with my family from Connecticut to New Hampshire for a camping vacation. We were on I95 north past Boston,sometime after 9 am, when I noticed two planes bank sharply and head back toward Boston. We commented how strange it was. Our plan was to take a boat tour of Lake Winnipesaukee. When we got to Wolfeboro we parked up a side road, in front of a closed theater so we would have space for the camper. A lovely elderly woman walked over to us from her home. She said we were campers and the last to know anything. "We have been attacked and you have to come into my house and watch the TV. You won't believe it!" How odd to sit in a stranger's living room at 10:15am on September 11th 2002 and watch and listen. I never got this womans name. I know I said thank you when I left, I hope she knows how generous it was of her to bring us into her home. We went on our boaot tour and continued our vacation as planned. We worried and prayed. I am glad now that I was far away with my family with no TV and only a little radio and the newspaper to keep us connected to the events. About the time I heard it, my boss came down the hall and was asking what I had heard. As we were listening to the reports, the second plane hit the WTC. I went into our lounge area to see the television reports. In what is normally a very noisy and busy environment, you could hear a pin drop. Everyone was standing, staring at the tv in disbelief. No one said a word. Tears were in several eyes, including the men. We all watched in silence for what seemed like an eternity. As we had to go back to our areas and go through the motions of working, it was a day like no other. The phones were eerily silent. They rang maybe 3 times the whole day. There were tears and sadness, and confusion. Unanswered questions and prayers lifted to God for comfort to those in pain. I still cry when I think about the events of that day and probably always will. I found my buried patriotism which had been taken for granted for too long. I display the flag with pride at my home and wear a flag pin almost everyday to remember all those who died that day and to honor the servicemen and women who do what they do so that I may be free. When I saw the devastating pictures that were in some way staring back at me, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Why was this happening? Why would someone purposefully hit the Twin Towers? Then the pictures on the screen only got worse...the Pentagon was struck! A symbol of our strength, now had a massive gash in her side. Could this get any worse? Yes...Flight 93 crashed in the countryside of Pennsylvania. America was under attack, how could this be? As the day that forever changed America unfolded, I sat in disbelief. There was a gash in our symbol of strengh, and then a city scape was forever altered when the Twin Towers came gracfully, but tragically down. Another symbol of our strength gone forever. But in some way another symbol of our strength and determination became ever more evident when it was found out the the passengers of Fight 93 fought back. Though our world will never be the same, we learned a valuable lesson. We learned we are vulnerable. We will never forget what happened on September 11, 2001. And may we never forget how Americans of every race, color, and creed came together not as individuals but as a nation to show the world, that you may be able to knock America down, but you will never be able to knock her out. New walls will be built and grass will grow, but let us never forget those 2,801 heros that lost their lives for freedom. I was walking down the concourse when I heard a man having his shoes shined tell someone on his cell phone that "a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center". I thought to myself how funny it was that this man could believe such a silly rumor. As I got closer to my gate I realized that I was the only one walking down the concourse. You could hear a pin drop. It was surreal. I realized everyone in the airport was standing in front of the TV monitors. That's when I saw it. I got there just in time to watch the second plane hit. I was stunned. There are no words to describe how I felt even to this day. I think I felt fear mostly. I felt violated. I always thought no one could touch us here. We're supposed to be safe here. Things like this happen in other countries they don't happen here. Who could hate us that much? I was standing at my gate watching this happen with a group of people waiting to catch a plane to New York. I felt so sorry for them. I tried to imagine which ones were from there and which ones were just traveling in. Who had family there? Who had friends there? How would I feel if this was happening here in Chicago? I could hardly breath. Minutes later, the airport announced that all flights were cancelled. All I knew was that I wanted to get home. I wanted to be with my kids and my family. I wasn't going to work, I wasn't going anywhere but home to hold my babies. How very precious we all are. How very precious our country is. May we never ever take these things for granted. On the screen, was smoke everywhere. At first I thought it was a scene from a movie, but then voices filled my ears, informing me that a world trade tower had hit. I thought it was an accident. Then I left for school. My first period class didn't discuss it all. Not everyone was even aware of it, but when I when i stepped into my second period class, World Geography, it was a whole different world. The entire class was devoted to listening of our radio about the crashes. My teacher told us that is was probably terroist attacks, most likely Osama bin Laden. She said that he had tried once before to bomb the World Trade Center. The whole day was different. All of my classes were a lot less talkative. I was upset because i used to think the United States couldn' t be beaten or attacked. It was like something that seemed like it could always protect us. I got scared because i never thought that we would ever be attacked again. You know New York is there because you see the skyline and so many parts of the city all the time--in the news, in movies, pictures everywhere. I was very shaken that morning on hearing about New York, but I realized that is was "surreal" because I have never been there (except as a six-year-old). But when I saw the Pentagon, I realized that our nation was in fact being attacked and the attacks were real. I have been to the Pentagon and seen it on many occasions because my father was in the U.S. Army and was stationed there in the late 1960s. Those images of the plane in the building were too much, and something I will never forget for the rest of my life. We continue to feel the aftershocks as our aircraft industry community experiences layoffs and closings. On September 11, I hugged my then 3-year old son extra tight that afternoon after picking him up early from daycare. Since then, I never miss a chance to give him an extra kiss or tell loved ones that I love them. The most recent and deepest tremor was the April 2002 death of a close friend?s son in Afghanistan as he served in the Army. His fate was sealed that day in September as his base went on alert in San Diego and months later as he was sent to join troops near Kabul. The events are unexplainable to me and are especially so to the parents of a loving son who knew that he had a dangerous job but chose to continue so that others may not be harmed. I believe more than ever that we are all here on borrowed time and have come to a better understanding that each day is one more chance to get it right. It may be the last chance. As I was drying my hair and getting ready for work. I was watching t.v. and saw where at that time they thought was a small plane crashed into the wtc. As I was sitting on my bed watchiong, I saw the SECOND plane hit. My skin cringed and I knew something was wrong. It was as if it was a film set that I saw this but knew right away, IT WAS REAL!. I left my house squinting in the morning sun...I got to work about 8:00 am and was ready for the day, So I thought. About 8:50 am I recieved a phone call at my job, it was my boyfriend. He asked if i was okay and if i was aware of what was happening. When i told him i didn't know what he was talking about he told me to put the news on...that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. In my mind i thought it was a freak accident and i said to my boss maybe it was a charter plane...they fly in and out of the water near the FDR Drive. I called my mother, who works across the street from the Empire State Building, to tell her what had happened and she said she was trying to contact me but the phones would disconnect... I remember telling her i wasn't sure what was happening but i asked her to listen for any updates and to keep me posted. I told her i loved her and that i would call her as soon as i knew what we were going to do. So we put the news on and saw it wasn't a charter plane but a commercial airline. I immediately said it was terrorism, and my boss called my crazy. We worked on the Ninth Floor in the wing of the building with a limited view so i went to the pantry window of the Eleventh floor, where our Environmental Police Unit is located...i could see the smoke billowing out of the building... I could only word "OH MY GOD"...those poor people...then while looking out of the window i heard a loud rumbling noise, not sure what it was i looked behind me to see if someone was behind me...next the building shook and i looked up into the sky to see a huge orange cloud coming from where i thought the first fire was...my first thought was there was a bomb in the plane and it had blown up. As i ran back to my office, one of the Officers informed me it was a second plane. That's when my suspision of terrorism was confirmed. A few moments later, One of the Uniformed workers was frantically yelling "We Are Under Attack!", I didn't know what he was talking about till i heard on the radio that the Pentagon had been struck by a commercial airline. All panic and hysteria broke loose at the Department of Sanitation's 44 Beaver Street Building. The alarms were going off and a calm voice on the PA system came on it was the Building superintendent. He informed us that the elevators were shut down, and for everyone to report to the Clinic on the Lower level. As everone was decending to the lower level only a few people stood behind glued to the television...ironically the only viewable station was Bloomberg News. That is when my eyes were witness to the most horrific thing...the collapse of the North Tower...God, how i wished it was all a nightmare. In fact it was one, only that i was living it. It was then that my boss grabbed me and shoved me down the stairs. As we reached the lower level, we were greeted by about 70 other employees, The glass doors that welcomed everyone into the building were now covered in soot. Already about 2' of ash and papers were laid out on the street like a blanket of oatmeal colored snow. I can remember the building super. pulling in people from the outside, giving strangers santuary from the hell that was unleashed outside that very door. Women were crying, Men were crying, there was so much desperation in that room, that people were taking a chance and leaving the facility. Including Myself. Both my bosses, grabbed me and told me that we were going to try and get out of the building, but before doing so they had to make sure i would be okay, being that i have asthma. I was trembling with fear, anxiety, desperation, you name it. I nodded and they grabbed my hand and next thing i know i am making a pilgrimage towards the light through the darkness. The air was thick and it choked my pores. holding on to the person in front and leading the person behind me we made our journey to the FDR Drive near Water Street. I remember seeing people crying, mouths open everything was happening so fast...my heart beating was the only thing i could hear. Then i remember my boss walking close behind me and asking my "Hey Kid are you alright, You look like your having trouble..." The next thing i know, I am bouncing in his arms...he was carrying me. I passed out. We paused momentarily and passersby were handing my handkerchiefs water, face masks, one woman even gave me her inhaler for my ashtma. As we stopped the laid me on the ground next to a hydrant and we felt the ground shake. The rumbling like nothing i have ever felt...not even the subway cars i rode to work every morning could compare to the rumbling i felt in my blood. As i open my eyes to see everyone gasping, and frozen in time, i turned to look over my shoulder and for the second time that day, i was witnessed to a horrific historic event, the collapse of the South Tower. Standing there alone mourning for an hour after the first tower went down, it's significant other came to it's knees. Seeing the cloud of destruction closing in i knew it was time to get moving again. With what ever strength i had left i made it to a Department of Transportation Depot. Where we were handed face masks to make our way out of the dust cloud that was approaching fast. We finally made it out of the area to Sanitation Headquaters, across the street from the Federal Building. Were i was triaged by a wonderful makeshift staff, that was ready to take on whatever devistation came there way. I was treated and released to hypoglycimia, my asthma and blood/sugar level were irregular causing the temporary unconsiousness. It was a day were EVERYONE was a NEWYORKER. And everyone helped out...Muslims helped Jews, Blacks helped Whites, and vice-versa. It is an awful shame that it took a tragedy for everyone to realize we are all the same color inside. It was a day that will be in our memories forever. And it should never be forgotten. You learn to enjoy this when you work in a modeling and talent agency. Ingrid and I lived together and just like many mornings we walked from our apartment on 16th and 8th to the office on 21st and Broadway. When people desribe the sky that day they are not exaggerating. IT was radiant blue. Almost too perfect or as though you yourself were in a glorified NYC movie. We sat there drinking coffee and reading the Post. The phone rang and the day began. It was Alison from Log Island who had formerky worked in the office had to leave because she was 8 months pregnant. "Nu ah." Igrid said as she moved her eyes toward me. I went back to my paper trying not to be nosey at the conversation. When you work for the world of drama you associate with dramatic people (not excluding myself). I didn't want to eaves drop so I went back to my Post. Ironic pertaining to eavesdroping, huh? Anyway, she then turned t ome and said "Aplane went into the World Trade Center". My mind immediatley romanticized the Tower into some far off place. I'd lived in NYC a little less than a year and that isn't enough time to feel familial yet. She hadn't said something about The Twin Towers I had run towards for the past 11 months. I guess what happened was my mind objectified them. It's like if someone tells you your friend dies but they use their ful proper name and all of the sudden there is a space between you two. We turned on the radio which was tuned to Howard Stern. He was a familiar voice that had the ability to exude light heatedness no matter what the subject. His delivery and candidness was impressive. I wanted to see what was happening. I felt like a blind rat trapped in a room with spiked walls that was getting smaller and smaller. Somehow I knew that if I could just see what was happening everything would be under control more. Ingrid told me that the casting office down the hall had a tv and I lept leaving her there alone to watch the phones. I didn't want to leave her alone. However, she thought that someone should stay there and wait for any calls. So, I left. There was one person in the tv room. We didn't acknowledge eachother. We just lazored in on the screen. Sure enough there they were. Only now they were SUBjective. MY Towers that I sweat towards so many times down the Hudson. I got to see the the second one hit. Yeah, aren't I special. In comes Ingrid and others from the casting office. We're about 7 now. The Tower falls. I notice through the second story window that the poeple on the Broadway who had stopped at opened doored cars to listen to the radio had started running uptown. Grown men amd women. By now the pentagon had been hit and the last plane crashed. What was happening. All of the sudden America felt so small. The pentagon my next door neighbor. A casting agent of about 57 years started wailing. Not crying. Wailing out groans and repeating"Oh my God! Oh my God!" Just then I remembered a book I had read about life. Nothing is good or bad. Things just are and you choose the reaction. Life is a game. I saw her choosing the sorrow and like others in the room felt resposible to balance that choice with peace. Breathing. The TV screen now has a view of the Financial district from Staten Island. The entire tip of Manhattan is egulfed in Black Bruting smoke. Island Under Seige. I envision the black smoke coming finding my window adn darkness. But it never does and that's the worst of it. The wind that day just happened to be blowing East not North. We stayed and cleaned and tried to get a hold of people. I got my dad on the phone and he said he was watching the news. I got a call from an ex of mine who had waited 5 years to call me. Not a happy traditional happy ending but an ending a couple of months later that was long over due. Ingrid and a friend wanted to shop. They like many people find comfort in beautiful clothes and stores. For me it didn't work. A chocolate chip cookie did though. And unfortunatley still do which leads me to believe I have unresolved the experience. How do you resolve that experience? I am not a Christian. I don't think that Osama will go to hell. I know that he is no different from me and that I must forgive him because what I hate in him I hate in myself. Where does that leave you though? Confused. A lot of people still are. We were instructed immediatley to buy and keep the economy going. Why? Why did this have to be a push into more unconsciousness than before. By about 4pm a bar near my apt was busy. I caught a glimpse of a girls smoking and elaboratley waving her arms. I couldn't imagine where her mind was. How she could smoke. Not 8 hrs earlier there were thousands of people downtown who would have given their life's savings for one clean breath. And then here she was choosing to breathe in ash. This day I learned so much. I moved on Nov 25 th 2002. I'm now living in Loiusville, KY with my sister. I couldn't justify the business anymore nor my lifestyle. I had been changed. I love NYC. On Tuesday morning, we all had gotten up early and left on a hour drive to a beautiful private park.-can't remember the name right now. Anyway, after the tour & lunch on the trail, we were back at the small general store/gift shop. When I noticed everyone had cleared out, I went outside and one of our tour directors was telling everyone about the events of the morning. I came in on the middle and couldn't believe what she was saying, and she kept interjecting, "this is not a joke, it really happened". I was concerned for my son (active Navy) & at the time was stationed in Millington, Tn. Fortunately, one of the members on the tour had his lap top. When we arrived back at the motel, I was able to e-mail my son and was relieved to hear he wouldn't be going anywhere at the time. Then all of us went to our rooms and turned on tv.--we all had trouble believing what we were seeing. Our next concern was flying home the following Monday. We were lucky that the airlines started flying again by that time, but, limited flights. We all experienced the baggage checks, & I mentioned to many of my friends when I got home, that I felt safer on that flight than I had all the other times I've flown. The security check was great. My brother turned on the news and then it showed a big cloud of smoke. That was when I found out how serious the crash was. I did not really know too much on the World Trade Centers but after seeing the crashes, and seeing the buildings fall down, I was beginning to get scared because our school is a big place and they could do some thing to it. I was working in my office, preparing for my 10:30 ?History of Germany? class, when, at around 10 am, a colleague of mine (Randy Lytton) who had just gotten in and had been listening to his car radio on his way to GMU, poked his head into my office with the news that ?something really awful has happened in New York?listen to the news.? Already radios and computer screens were filled with events as they unfolded both in NYC and in Washington. I decided to bring in a boom box radio into my 10:30 history class. Even though the course?s subject matter was rather far afield from the drama of the Twin Towers and Pentagon, I felt it important to inform students of what was happening. A number of them had not heard the news at that point. In my class of about 40, I had several students whose parents or relatives worked at the Pentagon. I also had several students from Afghanistan?one of my better students was related to Masood, the Northern Alliance leader who had been assassinated only two days earlier by what was suspected to be Al Queda forces. When hearing the news about the World Trade Center and Pentagon air crashes, she rushed out of the room immediately. Two or three other students with Pentagon connections frantically attempted to phone their relations, to no avail since phone lines were apparently jammed with traffic. I simply kept the radio on until we all decided we would go over to the Johnson Center to view developments on TV. After class, I emailed students in my afternoon Western Civilization courses (History 100), alerting them to events and asking them to read the ?Funeral Oration for Pericles? from The Peloponnesian War by Thucydides which was particularly apt under the circumstances. I also quoted it in the email message: ?Then, again, our military training is in many respects superior to that of our adversaries. Our city is thrown open to the world, and we never expel a foreigner or prevent him from seeing or learning anything of which the secret if revealed to an enemy might profit him.? To be frank, I was worried about possible backlashes against foreign, particularly Middle Eastern students. I also went to my afternoon classes with the quotation in hand, in order to let students know that classes were cancelled for the rest of the day. Later on, the Western Civilization students mentioned how appropriate that felt the Thucydides quote to be. It was unfortunate but true that the events of September 11 allowed history students to see connections between the past and present they had not thought about or reflected upon before. For the freshmen Western Civilzation students in particular, the course now did not seem to deal with remote events and persons, but had meaning for them today. Suddenly the morning talk show that I always listen to going to work was interrupted by a special news announcment. "An airplane had crashed into one of the world trade center buildings". Tell us your story: My job as a state investigator led me to be at a defense attorney's office near the Fairfax Courthouse interviewing a suspect with 2 other investigators. When the first plane hit the twin towers, an associate attorney came into the interview room and turned on a tv. We were shocked and said what a horrible accident. The thought of terrorism never crossed our minds. We continued the interview but left the tv on with no sound. As the interviewed continued we watched the tv from time to time and saw the second plane hit the twin towers. That's when someone said that was no accident. Soon after the Pentagon was struck. As our cellphones and pagers began to go off, I went to a phone to call my wife. My thoughts were in getting our son from school and getting out of town. Needless to say the interview was over and we each went our separate ways. I know most of my co workers went home to be with their families. I rushed home. I remember feeling a sense of fear I had never had before. The sense that home wasn't safe. My city wasn't safe. I contemplated leaving the area and camping out in the mountains. I wondered if that would be safe. As the minutes went by and no more planes fell. Things began to calm down, but they would never go back to the way it was the day before. I would later go to the Pentagon. I was in shock, seeing the destruction and the ruins. It was horrible. I remember feeling sad that I had never seen the World Trade Center in real life. I remember feeling a sense of overwhelming anger and hatred towards those responsible and those who allowed it. Everyone at the Pentagon had a look of shock on their face. The Pentagon police officers had blood on their uniforms. Finally I remember as uniformed soldiers brought out multiple bodybags and placed them on the ground. Much has been written and said about the events of that day and the days that followed. It seems perhaps futile to write anything more about what Americans now call "9/11." On the days that followed those horrific acts of terrorism I chose not to write anything about them. I was, like so many people around the world, lost for words to express my horror and sadness. I felt that anything I wrote would simply come out as words bathed in emotion and an anger at an unseen enemy. A year later and I am still not sure that anything I write on the subject would be worth reading. I wasn't there, I didn't know anyone there, I knew no-one personally affected. So my connection is distant to say the least. I feel like I don't have the right to feel grief and sadness over what happened in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania. I don't want to be seen as one of those people who becomes dramatically inconsolable when someone they hardly knew dies. Most of what I felt and still feel about what happened has been hidden away, so that people don't feel that I am somehow trying to gain attention from someone's else's tragedy. Perhaps this is how most of the 'unaffected' were affected. For weeks after September 11th 2001 I had terrible nightmares involving hijacked planes and buildings. I often woke up in the middle of the night and simply failed to settle again. I would hear a jet go over head and do what I think many did in the immediate aftermath, look to see where it was and what it was doing. I live in the flight path of Liverpool airport and often see planes flying low on their approach to or ascent from the airport. For weeks afterward the sight of a low flying aircraft would send a shiver down my spine. Though it might seem odd to say, I can't really tell you why I felt such a connection to those involved in this dark moment of history. After all, people die violently every single day and most of the time we just sit there viewing it all in prime time detachment. It's the news, and as tragic, sad or horrible as that may be, it's still just the news. September the 11th was different. It seemed like everything else in the world just stopped. Everyone who was anywhere near a TV or radio was just transfixed, standing there helplessly watching an unimaginable act of evil unfold before their very eyes. I sat alone in my lounge and watched thousands of normal people die a gruesome death. I had a connection with America and New York, I'd stood on the roof of one of those towers, I knew from personal experience just how tall these towers were. By 2:30 UK time, they were gone forever. America was under attack, on its knees and all I could do was sit there and watch my TV. I felt useless. I wanted to help, but what could I do? For weeks afterwards we were bombarded with image after image of the devastation. Recorded telephone messages from people caught in the towers back to their loved ones were played, as were the exchanges between the terrorist pilots and air traffic control. Every aspect of the atrocity was played out in detail for us to decipher for ourselves, if indeed that was even possible. Eventually I simply couldn't take any more. I stopped watching the news on about the 14th. But the images of the planes hitting the building and of the desperate people taking the hopeless decision to jump from the burning towers still haunted my thoughts. I would close my eyes and they would be there. Eventually daily life returned to normal of course. In fact I remember being shocked as to just how quickly it did. But what else should I have expected. Tragedies happen, life goes on, that's how it's always been and will always be. Indeed it couldn't be any other way, but still, it seemed strange to me in some way. Eleven months later I visited the former site of the World Trade Center in New York, now called Ground Zero. I went there looking for something, some peace maybe. I wanted to find something there that would help me come to terms with all of this. Something that would make sense of the impact it has had on the City and on me personally. I am not sure what I thought I would find there, whatever it was, I never found it. Ground Zero was simply a sixteen acre building site in the heart of Lower Manhattan. Evidence of what had happened there was almost impossible to find. I felt no connection whatsoever, instead I just felt empty. I'd made the journey to Ground Zero to find something that in the end simply wasn't there, and if it wasn't there then I had no idea where it would be. A nearby church still had thousands of tributes covering its railings. I stood there and read some of the words now fading with time. A tribute to a Charles Edward Jones who had been a passenger on flight 11, the first plane to hit one of the towers. Words from firefighters from all over the United States speaking to their lost 'brothers.' A picture of a young man with a message next to it saying "Happy 24th Birthday Jimmy Quinn. We love you." One message read "Our Prayers are with you. I can't believe how hard this is for everyone. Always remember though that GOD is in control, he has a plan through all of this and we are praying that something great will come out of all of this. For we live through hope in Christ Jesus, he will take care of everything." Perhaps that's true, and to a point I envy those who have that kind of faith. To say God has a plan is all well and good I suppose, but the hijackers also believed they were carrying out God's plan didn't they? Of course, about the only person who hasn't mentioned September 11th is God himself. He has, as ever, remained silent on the whole issue, instead allowing man to twist 'his words' into something as disgusting and hateful as we witnessed that beautiful American Tuesday morning. It makes me all the more sad that in the places where there should perhaps be answers and peace, there are simply just more questions and excuses. On this tragic day a very dear friend of our's Yamel Merino 25, an EMT worker from METRO CARE was killed doing what she did best, saving people's live's. Yamel had an 8 year old son named Kevin, who she loved very, very much. She was very dedicated to her job, family and friends, she had a very warm heart and a beautiful smile. Yamel had many friend's on and off the job, but there was that one special friend and her bestfriend Sandy Santiago. Yamel and Sandy were partner's on the job for quite a while,they became very close like they were sister's ,they both had children who were the same age and did things together with there children. Sandy would alway's invite Yamel to family events, we considered Yamel and her Son as part of our family ,we alway's included them in everything that we did. On the morning of September 11, Yamel Merino was called to respond to the WTC attack, she was very excited. She called Sandy to let her know that she was on her way down there and Sandy's response was " YAMEL BE CAREFULL ". Merino had been one of the first ambulances responding to the plane crash in the north tower, Yamel was killed in the collapse of the south tower. As a black cloud covered the sky where many lives were taken, everyone stood in silence and shock. Later that day when Sandy heard the tragic news she just could not believe it, and didn't want to believe it. She felt like a part of her was missing, Sandy could not see herself going back to work but Yamel's mother told her that" Yamel would not want you to quit your job ". As day's, hours, minutes, and seconds go by it was like yesterday that Yamel was here, we don't want to consider her gone because Yamel will alway's be in our hearts no matter how far or near she is. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 was in the second week of school, so I was still getting used to arising with the roosters. It wasn't until I was driving to work that I heard about the World Trade Center falling. I live in California, so I am quite removed from the horror. At first, my reaction was the same as when I hear of a bridge falling or a train wreck. But, when I arrived at work, I saw the horror on T.V. I called my husband, who had not yet heard about the events. He was the first person I could think of to call, because at that moment, I really needed to talk about what I was seeing. I cried, and then I went numb. I am a high school teacher, and it was my job to inform my first two classes of the day. How do you relate the awful events of that day? My students were in shock. For several weeks we opened the class period by discussing the new events stemming from September 11. I could see a definite difference between my 11th graders and my 10th graders. My juniors seemed to comprehend the seriousness of these events, and they seemed to understand that they were living out history.
