I am at University in Melbourne, Australia and as one of my subjects i am doing american history. I am currently doing an essay on 9/11 and i am overwhelmed by the courage and strength of the american people whom have been through such heart break in recent years. At the time of 9/11 i was on a sporting tour in England and had just come home from visiting the tourist attractions. I walked in the front door to see my friends gobsmacked infron of the television. I asked them what they were watching and they turned to me, tears welled up in their eyes and said "its america, the terrorist attacks". I could not believe it, it was all to much, never could i comprehend the visuals on the tv were real. From that point on, i felt a connection to the attacks and wondered why it happened and how people could do this to the human race. Even now, looking back on what others have said about the attacks i find myself still amazed by the strength and courage of the american people. I hope for each and every one of you that your plight to find peace and security wheather it be within yourself, family, government or country, is successful and that you may one day, in the not so distant future, look back on this fragment in time and remember that it has made you stronger. In my studies of american history i have come to learn that america is a strong country, bound not only by a stength for patriotism but also a love of all that is just and fair. i wish you all hope and strength, and pray that you may all one day, feel at one and at peace with the mayhem that was bestowed onto your country. Tell us your story: I was at work like every day I go to work, I was listening to the radio and someone turns to me and says a plane hit the twin towers thinking yeah right thats not even funny. Then I heard them say another one has hit, I was so scared. The first thought that came to my mind was disbelieve then I wondered where everyone I loved was, at that time my fiancee was in Marion buying something for his truck, his dad a lt. colonel so I wondered about him and his mother who was with his grandparents in New York but far away that they were not in the area. I thought of my family and there well being and then his sister who just moved to Hawaii with her little daughter I was so scared not knowing if people were ok. it never hit that day how serious it was and what really happened. I cried everyone cried, I could see the fear in my fiancees eyes wondering about his family-he comes from a military family. I felt so bad for him knowing everyone I loved was ok. My grandfather couldnt believe it, something like this in my life time.WOW!. I still hurt and cry to this day thats a memory that will never be out of my mind and heart. I am so angry at them to leave all those people to die. I guess I dont know what to say except I send my love to those that lost someone and those that morn and hurt. I hurried to get my clothes on and get out of the house because I was running late. The drive to work was a mere 13 miles, but Las Vegas drivers are ten fold worse than your average Los Angeles commuter. I turned on my TV and saw a news report on.....I tuned it out (as I normally do) to get my socks on and what not. Well I watched and watched until it finally clicked in my head that I was looking at a rather large puff of smoke by the Pentagon. The screen was split in two so that on the right side was the Pentagon and the left was what appeared to me at first to be a building on fire. The socks finally were on and I started to tie up my boots (it was now 7:30 AM.....definitely going to be late for work). I kept watching and now listening to what the "talking heads" on the news were saying............and then the video of the second plane hitting the tower.........it struck me. I jumped in my truck to get my butt to work. It's funny how the mind works, one minute I'm watching this stuff, the next the little voice is yelling "GET TO WORK!!!" I noticed though that when I got outside it was quiet. In fact it was quiet all the way to work...........VERY ABNORMAL for Las Vegas. Planes go in and out of McCarran International Airport 24 hours day. On the radio was my usual program, Howard Stern. The entire morning then came full circle as I listened to the program (which was on tape delay for the West Coast). Howard had been going about his usual day when the first plane hit and mass confusion hit his studio. I tuned in in time to hear callers calling in and Howard calming them down. "This is bad," I said out loud to myself. I finally got to work, everyone else on the shuttle from the parking lot to the mall (where I worked in Las Vegas) began talking about what was going on. It just wasn't sinking in yet...........it was more of a novelty type atmosphere rather than an serious event. Some people on the shuttle had family members who worked at the WTC towers. Once inside, the mall at first was set to open. Then security came around posting letters saying that under the current siutation the mall was going to be closed. My manager asked me a question I can't ever forget, "Can you believe what's going on?" I still can't. Almost a year later I still don't. The world was never perfect to me, but now I'm in an impasse of emotions. On one end of the spectrum I'm mad as hell, but on the other I'm resigned to the fact that we can never be able to live our lives the same way. To beg to be able to walk my baby brother to his gate and to ensure that he got on the right flight was something I never dreamed would happen. It used to be nice. Tell us your story: I had just gotten out of class and i was headed to the Tiger Den for an early lunch when I saw everyone crowded around the tv's. I watched the tv in horror as the second plane slammed into the second tower. I grabbed my cell phone and dialed my best friend and I asked her what in the world is going on.She said "Jamie, we've been attacked." At first I was stunned, I mean how could they have the nerve to attack us on our own soil. I didn't believe it. I went back out into the lobby and glued my eyes to the TV where they would remain for the next 2 hours. I watched as the news reports came in about a plane hitting the Pentagon and then about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania, one that was headed for the White House. It was all too much. I broke down and started crying. I didn't have any family in New York or Washington but I still felt like I had lost MY family. I felt like it was my dad who had fought so bravely to help others, I felt like it was my mom who had helped people down the stairs to safety. I felt as if someone had ripped my heart out. My heart still goes out to all the mothers,daughters,fathers,husbands,wives,grandparents, and friends who lost loved ones on that day. My prayers are with you all. I told him I sensed urgency and asked if I could get back to him in 15 min. He(my Cuban friend and partner) said yes sure and I went to the living room and turned on CNN. The first tower was burning. Then out of no where a plane flew into the second. I was completely blown away. To keep it short after I heard also about the Pentagon I went back to my computer and told my friend in Cuba that a savvy ruler would make more than consolations. He would offer air space, blood, doctors, help in general in a situation which transcended old rivalry and adversity. They are not talking about it much but I can tell you one thing for sure and that is there will be NO slack cut to any country that supports terrorism. I am concerned about the relations in other countries who have stood by the Palestinians, Libyans etc. The overtones are not good. Gandhi is one of my idols. Passive non violence to achieve a goal is one thing.Protecting yourself and others from these kinds of acts are another. Condemnation of these acts promptly is of the highest order with our friends. Guerrilla warfare to achieve a goal is one thing. Large scale murder of innocents is another - it is Holocaust. My business stood still, phones only rang from family who were concerned, I know that Andrew is safe,I know that Ethelyn is safe, I do not know about the rest. Morgan Stanley(on many floors) in New York handles our affairs and there are several who are like family. My daughters art teacher from the NC School of the Arts was in a studio on the 95th floor. I am reminded of a read by Ken Kesey in Boulder at the Kerouac conference in 81. Kesey, Ferlingetti and Ginsberg read. Kesey read a piece about how the assassination of John Lennon had affected the whole world for the year after. These were revolutionaries of the highest order and their weapons were words. So these things are things we are up against. I am amazed at the brutality we like to refer to as humanity. I think it is dangerous for anyone to stand too close to parties that have now or in the past involvement with the people who support these tactics. Even someone who is in disagreement should condemn this action. A savvy politician would do that now, in my humble opinion. This makes me feel steadfast in my resolve on the Cultural Exchange Center aspect of the plan. I went to my first period at 9:15 not knowing of anything that had happened. It was in second period class when i walked in and saw that the television was on. Then I looked closer on the television and saw the World Trade Center towers in flames. I asked my friend what had happened and he said the World Trade Center had been hit by two commercial airplanes. I was shocked by this and I asked, "Who would do something like this?" Tell us your story: I was at work in Howard, SD when my boss's husband came in and said that one of the World Trade Center towers had been hit by a plane. We had no TV so we turned the radio on and it was all over every channel. At first no one knew it was deliberate and then the second tower and then the Pentagon and the Pennsylvania crash happened and I couldn't think. I am a NY native and I have all of my family and friends there. I was most worried about my aunt who works in the city. She watched it happen and was covered in debris but she was ok. I couldn't focus and I couldn't wait to get home and turn the TV on because when they said the towers had fallen, I didn't believe it. Then I saw it. I still didn't believe it. Luckily I did not lose anyone close to me but I know a lot of people who did. Someone was with us last summer because we visited NY on August 11th after having moved the trip back. We had originally planned to be there on September 11th. It is also our wedding anniversary so lots of mixed emotions. Shortly after the attacks, we got a puppy and we named him Manhattan...Manny for short. We have a shot of the twin towers that my husband took while we were there and blew it up big and it stands tall on a shelf in our living room. This isn't a sad story or a touching story or a heroic story but it's my story and it's proof of how even though we were all the way out here, it hit hard. Tell us your story: I remember the morning quite vividly as i was heading to work at the hospital early as I did every day.I am an early riser so it ended up that i have always been the early person.this morning like so many others I stopped at tyhe local circle K for the morning paper and my usual dark roast coffee.the radio was on and as i entered the door the news came over the radio.the girls looked at me in disbelief.Could this be a practical joke,remembering War of the Worlds. Needless to say i made a hasty exit to make my way to the hospital to turn the tv on to see if what my ears had heard was indeed true.I told everyone that i came into contact with upon my arrival what i had heard.They were like me,they could not beleive that this was happening.only after i had gone back to turn on a tv and insist that they do the same did they realize they reality before us. In my years as a medical professional i've seen my share of tragedies but none could compare to this.Thousands of miles away and it ripped at the very soul of all Americans.Not a day goes by when I don't stop to say a little pray.A prayer for those who lost loved ones and one thanking the lord that some of us were spared that loss. This has been a horrific tragedy that will take years to mend.I'm not real sure that we will ever totally understand what led up to the events of sept 11,2001. It's hard for me to accept that there is this kind of hatred in the world,this total disrespect for life.No god regardless of religion would look down on this with other than complete and total distain.Pray that we can overcome our differences worldwide to prevent this from ever occuring again no mater whose soil it might be on. As soon as we heard the basics, we turned to CNN to get the whole story. We both stared at the T.V. in disbelief as history was played out on our screen. We cried when we saw the images of people running from the building and jumping out of windows. We cried when we saw the stories of people looking for their missing loved ones. We cried when we heard the stories of the heros who gave their lives trying to save the lives of others. We cried when we heard of the incredibly heroic acts of the passengers of the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania. We cried a lot that day and in the days to come as we heard all the stories of the families who searched hospitals and morgues for their missing members both hoping to find them, and at the same time praying they weren't there. We cried when the last hopes of finding any survivors was gone. Then an amazing thing happened. We all seemed to forget for awhile that we were black or white, Mexican or Latino, democrate or republican, gay or straight, Protestant or Catholic. For a while those things were irrelevant. We all came together in a common cause and remembered what patriotism is all about. We remembered that it is in God we trust. We remembered that emergency personnell have dangerous jobs with little pay for our benefit. We remembered that we are suppose to be thankful for our families and try to love our neighbors. We remembered that this country with all its' faults is ours and we will defend our freedoms. For awhile we remembered that we are all just Americans. Please, let's never forget again. I lost a lot of fellow men and women like my self just trying to do their part as a member of this great nation. I was unresponsive for a while after I saw the plains hit and I realised that I was not watching a movie and that this was for real. I saw the plain hit and my heart just broke in two. Being a mother of three all I could think about was getting to my children and holding them close.I cried for days and keep my children home for a while right next to me. I tried to explain to them what was going on and that we were going to be safe. All the while I was praying for that to be true. I have seen some things in my life but this will never let go of me. It is one year later and I still fear for my childern when I send them out the door to get on the bus. I am more aware of who my childern ride on the bus with! I am more aware of who my neighbors are! I hate to have to get on a plain. I do not think anyone will ever forget that day. I completed my morning routine as I do everyday, then walked downstairs to feast on my morning meal. I poured me a bowl of Cheerios and flipped the TV on, the scene that I saw made me drop my bowl and gaze in amazement at what I saw. Smoke billowing from the upper floor of World Trade Center 1, I stood there transfixed at the screen, my mind couldn?t comprehend what was happening. First normal logic kicked in and I thought that the plane must have malfunctioned and somehow smashed into the Trade Center, then it happened. A second jet smashing into World Trade Center 2, I now knew that this was no accident, someone intended to happen. I knew that this was a bleak day in the face of our nation, and I soon realized it when it was reported that something, possibly a helicopter had crashed into the Pentagon. On a recent vacation, I had flown to New York, and seen the towers from the window of my flight, the towers seems immense and seemed just to leap out of the ground and proclaim ?Here I am world.? It was now time for me to head to school, and I did so on a somber mood, knowing that hundreds of people in those towers would not live to see their loved ones again. In my first period, my teacher had the radio on, and I heard that my worst fears had come true, tower two was down. It seemed like a knife was plunged deep into my chest, I could almost feel the thousands of voices that were now silenced. The rest of the period seemed to just blur together, Mr. Gonzales?s Spanish lecture all seemed to go in one ear and out the other. I just sat in horror in 3rd period as I saw the aftermath of the damage, both towers were gone, and now we have just learned that a plane has crashed into the Pentagon. The day that I had woken up on, just thinking that it was going to be just a normal day in the life of a 15 year old, turned out to be one of the one of the hardest to comprehend in my entire life. The principal's voice came over the loudspeaker, but we all just figured it was a routine announcement. Were we ever wrong! He announced that a plane had just crashed head on into the Pentagon and two other planes had flown directly into the twin towers sending them crashing to the ground. It all seemed unreal. He asked anyone who had parents working at the Pentagon to report to the office. Everyone was in a sense of terror, panic, and disbelief. I know for me, it was more disbelief. How could this be happening on just a typical September school day? Why today? Everyone was on their cell phones or in line at the office phone attempting to contact their parents, friends, or relatives. There was a sense of urgency to find out if they had been directly affected. Luckily no one in my family was a victim of this terrorism, but several people I know lost loved ones. It was a day no one will ever forget, a day to go down in history, September 11, 2001. I was going through AIT(anvanced individual training)to be a cook for the U.S. Army at Fort Lee, Virginia. For about a week, I had strange feelings that something bad was going to happen, but I could not figure out what exactly it was. I only knew that it was going to involve a couple thousand people, and that it was going to happen either on Fort Lee or in the general direction towards New York City. At the time I figured that it was going to happen within a matter of days if not weeks. I confronted my senior drill sergeant about it and I was blown off. Eventually, these feelings went away, and I did not dwell on the matter anymore. Until that dreaded day. I flew out of Seattle airport on July 4th for Camp Casey, in Tongducheon, South Korea, where I was going to be stationed. I had been there a couple of months before 9/11, so I had time to settle in, and I knew who the jokers were. So about 2200 hours on September, a couple of those jokers passed my right outside my barracks, saying that the WTC towers and the pentagon had been hit. Because of who they were I ignored them. Then half an hour later one of the NCO'S came outside and confirmed the information, saying that it was all over the news. I stepped into the building into the dayroom, and just sat there staring at the news and the pictures of the towers and the pentagon on fire, along with recordings of the second tower being hit. After an hour, I proceeded to call home to find out if my family was all right, and they were all in a frenzy because they could not get in contact with my uncle who is retired navy, and was still working in the pentagon. Needless to say, I did not sleep well that night, nor could I work efficiently the next day. Finally, at about 1600, I was able to call home again, and my mother was able to tell me that my uncle was alright--he had been in the pentagon only a matter of hours before the attack. I was relieved for myself, but two of my coworkers had family missing from the WTC site. They found out a couple of days later that their missing relatives were dead, but not recovered. The aftereffects started residing after about a month, and finally, back in about mid-february, I was restationed--this time to D.C. After having been here a month, I have finally gotten the nerve to see the pentagon. So, on this date, March 31, 2002, I went to the pentagon, and saw the construction, and just started crying. Then I proceeded to go to Arlington Cemetary, where I saw the display of letters and pictures, and I decided to tell my story. I thank God that me and my family is alright, but what about all the other families??? All I can say in response is this "WHAT HATH GOD WROUGHT?" I read this article in the "Homeless Voice" and had to share it: For anyone who thinks that God was on vacation on 9/11, this should change your mind. For those of you that know that God was busy on Tuesday, this will confirm it. First of all, he was trying to discourage anyone from taking this flight. Those four flights together held over 1000 passengers and there were only 266 aboard. He was on 4 commercial flights giving terrified passengers the ability to stay calm. Not one of the family members who was called by a loved one on one of the hijacked planes said that passengers were screaming in the background. On one of the flights He was giving strength to passengers to try to overtake the hijackers. He was busy trying to create obstacles for employees at the World Trade Center. After all, only around 20,000 were at the towers when the first jet hit. Since the buildings hold over 50,000 workers, this was a miracle in itself. How many of the people who were employed at the WTC told the media that they were late for work or they had traffic delays? He was holding up two 110 story buildings so that 2/3 of the workers could get out. I was so amazed that the top of the towers didn't topple when the jets impacted taking many more lives than it had already. Although this is without a doubt the worst thing i have ever seen, I can see GOD's miracle in every bit. I keep thinking that i can't imagine going through such a difficult time and NOT believing in God. The sight of the buildings burning and collapsing brought that same terror that I thought I had finally gotten over. My heart wept for all the innocent lives that were lost on that fateful day. Tell us your story: On the day of September 11, 2001, I was watching the television at my home as I saw the unremarkeable site of the twin towers fall to the ground. I could not believe what I had seen. I thought to myself who would do such a horrible thing. Take innocent lives for pride for which the only people they were trying to hurt in the end was themselves. As much as we grieve for those who have left this earth, we will never give up and they did this to make a whole in our world and it did not work.
