I had heard about the crash before I left but did not really see what was happening until I got home. I had gotten home and went to lay down and turned on the tv and saw the horror. The first plane had crashed then we saw the second. My husband was home as were my parents with us. We just watched in awe. My husband had left the room when the towers had began to fall. I yelled for my husband to come back to the room and we watched as the towers fell to the ground. I remember that they kept showing it over and over. We heard about the other two crashes and it was just like something you might see or hear from a movie. We watched tv all day because I feel we as well as others were waiting for more. We did not know how much more they were going to do. The next few nights were very tense as we live by an airport and at night there were several planes that were flying very low and it would wake us up and cause us to look out just to make sure everything is ok. This has built a bigger faith in me and my family. We are already christians but sometimes we loose sight of the fact that God does exist in this world and even though it was Saten's work of what happened that day, it is God who will see us through if we have a dedicated faith in him. September 11, 2002 was a pretty quiet day for us but I believe everyone is on their own alert and feeling a little tense this week but we will see this though!! I remember sitting in my 8th social studies class right before the bell rang. The very moment that I was struck with the worst case of the butterflies, my friend walked in and said? a plane just crashed into the pentagon." A second later, there was an announcement that TWO planes had hit the two world trade centers. Thinking about all the possibilities of what could have happened, I couldn?t come up with a logical explanation. Finally after class, I snuck out of my homeroom and ran down the hall with all of my friends to the nearest TV. There I saw people crying, and people standing there in shock and confusion. I looked on the TV, and all I could see were these two buildings that at the time I didn?t even know very much about, yet, as I stood there, were making the biggest change in a America at the time. I looked to my left and saw a senior crying, and said that her mom should have been on one of those planes, at that moment I knew this was not a mistake... I was overcome with emotion when I saw the news. I was very sad and very nervous about what was going on in New York. I left work to go pick up my 9 year old son so I could be close to him, than I went home to be with my husband. We watched the news the whole day and could not believe what we were seeing. Life will never be the same for all of us, especially for the familes who lost loved ones. Life as we knew it will never be the same because of a senceless act. I stayed home the next day as I was too upset to go to work and I kept my son home from school. My husband also stayed home, and we all stayed together and made sure we let each other know how much we loved each other as you never know what will happen. On September 11, 2001 that evening I found out that I was pregnant, I guess the saying is true when one life ends another starts. He works for Public Radio, so he has all the updated information. He called back a little later to let me know that it was not an accident, but a terrorist group. What touched me the most was the following day when one of my co-worker's came in crying. She is Phillipino...does not look Arabic, Pakastani, etc., but the fact that she was not WHITE was reason enough for a group of fellow workers to not get on the elevator with her. Tell us your story: I was on my way to drop my son off at the babysitters, when i had gotten there i saw the the first plane hit the World Trade Center in NY on her T.V. I remember thinking what a terrible accident! I got back in my car and headed off to work, the radio stations had stopped playing music and were all talking about what had happened! Then I hear the second building had been hit, I immediately called my boss who was still at home and asked her if she had spoken with her husband who works in NY she had and he was fine. We got off the phone and I immediately called my grandmother in Dallas, TX. We talked the whole ride into work when all of a sudden I hear the Pentagon had been hit, I was on the Key Bridge in Washington, D.C. I looked back and saw an explosion and lots of black smoke coming from the Pentagon. At that moment my phone had cut off and I lost contact with my grandmother. I remember looking around at all the people on the bridge and seeing everyone crying and looking around scared not knowing what to do. At that moment the radio stations were telling everyone that more planes were headed towards DC. I went on ahead to work(Georgetown) crying my eyes out not knowing if where they were going to hit next and when I got there the phones were ringing off the hook of family of myself and coworkers wondering if we were all ok. I remember the tone of voice grandma had when I called her back from work. She sounded so Happy and relieved that I was ok. My cell phone was dead for the next couple of days so i couldn't calls all that day. I don't think I would have believed it was all so real if I had not have seen it myself. After that day whenever an airplane would go by in the Washington area, everyone would kinda pause and look up to make sure it wasn't coming down. I can't remember a day when I cried so much for the people at the Pentagon and all the people in New York who had died such a painful and unthinkable death. I thanked God for September 12th. I walked back in the office to make some copies and was stopped by some of my coworkers talking about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. We were frantically trying to find a radio, TV, or something on the internet. One of the guy's wives had called to tell us what had happened. While we were searching for something to listen to what was going on, our boss came out of his office. His wife had just called and told him a second plane hit the second tower. The phones just about stopped ringing in our office. We found a TV and turned it on. Immediately, everyone in the office was around it. Some were crying. But it was just astonishment for the most part. Shortly after we turned on the television, the started to broadcast that the Pentegon had been struck and they were trying to get someone there to cover it. They started talking about a fourth plane that was lost. Other small bombs were going off all over, but it was not known at that time if they were hoaxes or real. All of the memories are so clear, but are all mangled together. The first tower fell. No one could believe what they were seeing. How could these massive structures come down like that? One of our coworkers had just been to NYC that previous weekend and had visited the towers. His brother lived and worked not far from there. He was frantically trying to get ahold of him, but the phone lines were all jammed. We tried to go on with the day, but we kept coming back to the TV. The second tower came down. All those people! We were all numb. We felt helpless. They had found the plane, crashed, in Pennsylvania. One of our sales people lived not far from the crash site. He was in Detroit at the time, but his wife was home. We were all worried. She was fine but could see the smoke from the house. The president was stunned and said a few words before taking off in AirForce One. In my heart, I felt that we needed to hear from him often. His words were the only thing that was going to comfort our Nation. And he did a fantastic job throughout the coming days. About lunch time, I went out. I needed some space. I listened to the radio. I drove around. I cried for the first time. All of our schools were in lock-down and would only release the students to their parents. Many parents ran to the schools and took thier children home. We all felt we needed to be close to our families. I wanted to be with mine, but I had to continue with the day. Our Nation Guard went on lockdown with guarded posts at the entrances. Still to this day, there are barracades around the building and an armed guard at the entrance. Lansing is the home to Bioport, the only company that produces the Anthrax vaccine. We were worried about a possible strike there. Many companies closed their doors for the day. We continued to go on. My husband called after lunch. He wanted to make sure we were okay. My heart ached for everyone at Ground Zero. After work, I held my son tight. I cried. We watched the TV endlessly. It was everywhere. Every channel. You didn't know where to look. Everyone had something different on. As the days and weeks passed, things slowly retuned to normal. Flags were swiped off shelves as soon as they were put out. Every house had something. The nation came together. The crime rate dropped. It's sad that it takes something like this to make the ciminals stop. The nation was in mourning. Every night we watched the TV hoping that someone would be found alive. The death toll grew. The nation was still coming together, months later. We had a little hope when they found some people alive, but that was the end of it. When I heard that they were looking for DNA to match to body parts, I knew it was worse that I could have ever imagined. My best friend's dad, a local volunteer fire fighter, went out to help in the days after the accident. When he came home, he said that everything was crushed, pulverized. There were no desks, chairs, telephones or computers. Everything was dust. He was devistated, but bonded to everyone down there. Over the passed few months, the follow up reports have been coming out. I have been watching them with great interest. I feel it's the only way I can bond with the people at all of the sites of terror. I want so badly to capture and destroy Osama Bin Laden, and I have never wanted that for anyone - ever! Although, I feel that even if he is killed, it will not stop the torrorism. I have since had a second child. I fear more for my children that I do for anything else. I had them in hopes of joy and happiness in their lives. Now I fear that the joy I had hoped for will be turned into fear. I don't want them to have to always be on alert for a suicide bomber or fear every time they get on an air plane that something will happen. I am angry that the Nation will always have those fears now. Although we have become stronger, we have also become afraid and vulnerable. Time will never heal what has happened. Nothing can take that away from us. I attended a memorial service in the small town where I live with my two boys this morning. It was moving. The police and fire fighters all had the black bands around their badges. There was a gun salute and taps. I cried again for the aching nation. My oldest son doesn't understand. He was only 2 when everything happened. He knows that airplanes hit some buildings and hurt a lot of people and that it makes mommy sad. I am trying to preserve the history for him. Once he is in high school and in history class, the books won't be able to tell him what happened. I know my history books didn't do a good job of telling me anything about the vietnam war. Once I got older and started talking to people who had been there or lived through it, there was no comparison to anything I learned in a book. I want my boys to be able to come to me, and look through a scrap book and watch the video tape of the news coverage as it happened. I love America. She has been injured - an injury that will never heal. I pray that she will be able to watch over us now, and our future generations, and keep us strong and safe. I pray that those who have such hatred against us will get their justice. I pray that my family and friends and I will not die at the hads of a terrorist. I had not seen the news before entering class and heard about the airline crash as I came out of class. I immediately tried to find out more info on online, but the lines were jammed. Finally, I went out and bought a radio so everyone in the dept. could hear what was happening. Like everyone else, I was stunned and the rest of the day was spent watching the events on tv ond talking through the events with friends. The deliberate, single-mindedness of the act struck us all as hard as the number of deaths. There was no goal to the destruction-no hostages to release, no policy to change, no specific act to protest. People died because they were in a building which was a symbol of America to fanatics. The university held multi-faith candle-light vigils and a series of symposiums on Islam, Terrorism, and American policies to help people deal with the event. The aftershocks are still occuring, but the initial question remains unanswered: What kind of mind plans and condones such an unprovoked attack on innocent people because they are different. My roomate actually called me at my friends that morning and left a message on the answering machine that we had been "attacked." When I got in my car to go home and get ready for work, I quickly turned on the radio to NPR. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I immediately knew that this was the beginning of something that wouldn't be resolved quickly or easily. They had set up televisions throughout the hospital I work in, and people stared in disbelief at the images they were seeing. The obvious questions were asked, and unfortunateley there were no obvious answers. A year later I still feel like I am searching for the words to describe how I feel about the events that day. I yearn for a way to put them into a personal as well as historical perspective. Perhaps that day represents an "end of innocence" for Americans, however, the renaissance of patriotism engendered by that day shows that we have emerged more resolute and convinced that our values are worthy and just. Lucky for me I was staying with my Mother and Father in law with my 3 month old son. I was just getting ready to get up for work when the phone rang. It was my husband, "Are you watching the T.V.?" he asked. I hardly ever turn the T.V. on in the morning because I get too distracted and always run late. He told me that planes had hit the World Trade Center in New York and one also hit the Pentagon. Of course like many other Americans, I was in shock. The first person I thought of was my Uncle who works on Wall Street. I have only been in Manhattan once, so I just couldn't picture where exactly his office was, but praying that it wasn't the WTC. After several frantic attempts on calling him, there was nothing when the call would go through. It was just an eerie silence or sometimes a busy signal. Miracously my husband had his pager number which was an 800 number, so it wasn't dialing directly into Manhattan. I paged him, waiting anxiously, he called back within 2 minutes. I couldn't even speak when I heard his voice, finally I said, "I have never been so happy to talk to you!!" He cried. He said he could see the smoke and the top of the WTC towers from his building. They were told to stay put. He said he would call back when he could. I called all my family to tell them I had spoken with him and they were just as relieved as myself. He called back about an hour later and said that they were evacuating, he wouldn't know when he could talk to me next, but that he would be okay. When my son woke up I hugged him so close. It truly made me realize how special he is and how lucky I was to have flown in the night before. I missed my husband desperately that day, we must have talked a hundred times. Since the airports were closed we decided he would drive to Henderson to pick us up and we would drive home on the weekend. I was lucky to have picked up a rental car the night before because by Tuesday afternoon they were all gone! About 5 hours later my Uncle called me back and said he just got home. He walked home from Wall Street to Brooklyn. He said it was an eerie long walk. Not many people talking just staring and sobbing in disbelief. Sometime about nine a co-worker came up to me and told me a plane had struck the one of the World Trade buildings. I did not make too much of it, thinking it was just a small plane off course. He then told me that the another plane had struck the second tower. At that point televisions had started to come on and people viewed what was happening in a state of stunned disbelief. I remembered how many times I had been in those towers as a messenger from 1978-1982. I got home that night grateful to be with my wife and two young sons and with a deep sense of regret and sadness for all the families who had lost loved ones. I later found out that a prior co-worker of mine, Dipti Patel, perished that terrible day. We started working at BAE Systems(then called Loral Fairchild)the exact same day(November 5, 1989). Since the I have been down to the site of the World Trade Center twice. The first time was in February and I stood there on Church street with my mouth open for about 10 minutes. What a vast empty space-what happened to those two beautiful buildings and surrounding concourse? I passed the site again this past May as part of the NYC 5 Borough Bike Tour and found my feelings being directed more toward rage and anger toward the demonic, satanic cowards responsible for this heinous crime. I want to urge everyone to read "Last Man Down" by Joe Piciotto. It was because of the brave, heroic men like him that so many people were rescued that day. I watched CNN as the second plane hit the South Tower, and decided I'd better head home and wait for the call. I was trained as a critical incident counselor, working for an international crisis response organization and volunteering for the Red Cross, and I spent much of the next three months counseling families and survivors. The people of New York didn't feel what the terrorists wanted them to feel. The predominant emotion I found in New York in the months after 9/11 was not fear or even anger. Three years ago, a series of tornadoes damaged our county and caused three deaths. I thought we'd never face a greater disaster. I was wrong. I was on another assignment when United Airlines Flight 93 crashed. When I heard about it, I returned to the Daily American office. Editor Jim Oliver assigned me to go to the emergency management office of the courthouse. We later heard that the families of those killed in the crash would be going to Seven Springs Resort. I went to the resort in case any wanted to make statements to the press. A family room was reserved for them. Staff put up banners and drawings made by local schools. We were told when the families came, they took photographs and wrote down the comments because they were so touched. A media room was set up. More than 30 television stations and newspapers from the U.S., Canada and England were there. The first family member I heard was Gorden Felt, the brother of passenger Edward Felt. I was deeply moved. When I went to a press conference near the crash site, I was surprised at how it looked. It didn't look like a crash site, it looked like a mine reclamation site. The family and public memorials were very touching. Since then, I have done numerous stories, interviewing emergency responders, psychologists and others who have worked with the families. They all said the families wanted to give their thanks to the local people. That is also what they said when they were here for the six month anniversary. One mother said the people responded like "a herd of angels." People have said they are sad that our beautiful county is now associated with such a tragic event. But one psychiatrist told me one of the mothers said, "This is my son's final resting place ? how beautiful it is." I am now covering the stories about the plans for the crash memorial and the one to honor volunteers who helped at the scene. The passengers and crew of Flight 93 will always be remembered here. Tell us your story: At the time, I was living at West and Horatio St. Its just under 2 miles directly north of the WTC/WFC complex so it was very easy to see from where I lived. My wife had already left for class over at NYU Law. I was still in bed, half asleep listening to the Howard Stern show. Since I was barely awake, I only heard bits and pieces of the show, but I remember opening my eyes when Gary Dell'abate (bababooey) said, "Why does this always happen to the World Trade Center?" It was the way he said it - suggesting that something NEW had happened - that made me wake up. I turned on my TV and saw both towers burning. I went to find my video camera, but the batteries were not charged. Instead, I grabbed my dog, my Nikon 35mm SLR and my digital camera and headed outside. When I arrived, a huge crowd had gathered near our apartment along West st. I could see them all facing the same way, but I couldn't see the towers yet, because our apartment was in the way. It was one of many surreal images I would remember from that day. As I rounded the corner, the towers came into view. It was very strange indeed to see something on TV, and the walk outside my building and see it with my own eyes. I started taking pictures - out of habit. I certainly did not mean to be disrespectful. I heard a collective groan come up from the crowd. I saw something falling away from the towers. Briefly, I thought that perhaps the "siding" of the buildings had been loosened by the fire and was coming off. It didn't take long before I realized that the dust cloud was too big for just siding, and I had just seen the south tower come down. I stood there, stunned thinking, "It is going to be very strange to see the skyline with only one of the twin towers standing." I had absolutely no idea that the North Tower would eventually come down as well. I went back inside, dropped off the dog and came back out with my video camera that had now charged sufficiently to get off a few shots. My first, and very naive, thought was that now that the south tower had collapsed, they fire department would now be able to concentrate on saving the north tower. Obviously I had no clue how bad things were down there. I had only been out for about two minutes when I heard another, now louder groan. I pointed my camera south and watched as North Tower slowly dissolved into a mushroom shaped cloud of debris. Instinctively, I turned around and pointed my camera at the faces of the people around me. Their mouths gaped open and there was a look of fear in their eyes. A girl behind me yelled "Now they're is no more f-ing twin towers!" Her voice was filled with anger, fear and disbelief. A man walked by me and yelled "This is an f-ing war, you mother f-ers." I think he was mostly angry. There was a low rumbling sound that I began to hear. I looked up and saw a pair of F-15's streaking high over head. I noticed my hands were shaking as it started to dawn on me the sheer impact of the moment. I'm a huge aviation buff, and I've been to many air shows, and seen military aircraft training many times. Here above me, were two F-15's not performing and not training. They were there to protect me and the other people around me from any other threats that could be headed our way. The collapse of the North Tower had a greater impact on me because it was much more visable. The North tower masked most of the South Tower from where I was, and the North Tower was much closer. I felt absolutley sick, as I realized that I had just watched thousands of people die. I know I had never watched anyone die before that. I went back inside, and my normally cheerful doorman looked green. He said, "I just feel sick." The rest of the day, I was glued to the TV, just hoping and praying that they would find thousands of people alive in an "air-pocket" somewhere. Later that night, it really bothered me that there was a possibility that someone might have survived the collapse, but were dying in the rubble somewhere with no way to call for help. The only thing that made me feel any better occurred the next day. Hundreds of people had gathered at West and Christopher street to cheer for the fire trucks, police cars, ambulances - even the fedex trucks. You could just feel that people wanted to do anything they could to help. The faces of the rescue workers were overwhelmed with emotion as they passed the crowd. On that first day, I don't think they were expecting it, and they were really overcome with gratitude.
