He asked me if we had seen the news, a plane had flown into one of the world trade towers. He told me he missed his early AM flight and was waiting for the next one. He was watching TV in the airport, and while we were talking he said, "my god, another plane just hit the other tower!" We were talking about how it couldn't be an accident if it happened twice. It was so frightening. My husband missed his flight because he forgot his wallet. If he wasn't so absentminded (bless his heart) he would have been in the air when all this started, and likely had to land somewhere and been stranded when they stopped all air flight. As it was, he drove home and was able to be with us during this awful time. My daughter and I decided to go ahead to our playdate. We had no way to call my friend at that point to tell her we wouldn't come. We were meeting at Longwood Gardens, a beautiful public gardens near our home. I figured might as well be in a place I love with friends than home alone. So we went. I used to work there, so I knew the security guards. As we walked our babies around the gardens, we got updates, heard about the PA flight and the Pentagon. It was horrifying, but I was glad I was not alone. We had friends who had clients who lost staff in the events in NY. We knew people who lived in Manhattan. The events on 9-11 danced around us. Lucky for us, we weren't touched directly. I was walking into my 2nd period Social Studies class like it was just a regular day. Everyone was sitting in class feeling the same way I was. The bell rang and the teacher wasn't there. About five minutes later, our teacher came into class and told us that a plane hit the World Trade Center. None of us have ever experienced a tragedy like this before. All of us being 14 and 15 year old kids weren't exactly sure how to deal with this. A lot of people cried. A lot of people were very somber. I myself had no idea what to think. I was glued to either the TV or the radio all day. Then came the crash into the Pentagon. Then came the crash that could have killed many people at our capital, but was foiled thanks to the brave souls aboard United Flight 93. Five years later and I find myself still feeling like it all happened yesterday. 9/11 not only changed us as induviduals, but as a nation. I will always remember, and I hope you will too. Talk radio helps me wake up, especially when it is shock-jock Howard Stern. I listened to a frantic caller tell Howard that he was in Manhattan and the entire downtown area was on fire. At first this piece of information didn't register as consequential. People who call the Howard Stern show are normally not "right in the head." But he kept up his frenetic pace, sounding much more grave than a typical caller. Howard's response was equally grave and serious. It finally came to me that this was no joke, something was truly wrong. Now fully awake I rushed out of bed to the television. The Twin Towers were on fire. Disbelief. Every channel had coverage. Newscasters reported that airplanes flew smack into the New York skyscrapers, clearly on purpose. Fear. Images of the Pentagon, not 10 miles from my house, came on the screen. It too was on fire. Panic. The Twin Towers collapsed, one after the other, clouds of dust blanketing the skyline. Horror. It became increasingly clear: America was under attack. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, I was at work at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Knoxville, Tennessee when I heard the news about the World Trade Center. At first a parent of one of our children told us that an airplane had crashed into the World Trade Center. At that time, I realized this was some very bad news, but it wasn't until a few minutes later that I realized just how bad it was. As I watched the television coverage of this in the lobby, I was angry, saddened, frightened, and felt very helpless. I felt sympathy for the families of the people in the World Trade Center, but I couldn't imagine how those people felt. I tried to imagine what it was like to be in the World Trade Center or one of the airplanes, but I couldn't even begin to know what those people must have felt. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My grandmother was over and she ran into my room. She was frantic. She screamed, " Do you know what's going on, get up!" I did not know what was going on so I followed her into the room to watch the terror of the falling towers. The second plane had just hit the second tower. I could not believe this. My first thought was that this was an accident. That stupid pilot was unqualified. Then the buildings began to fall and I realized. How in the hell could there be two unqualified pilots hitting both towers. I was afraid at this point. No one went to work. Los Angeles was in a state of confusion and disbelief. I could did not feel the reality of 9/11. Not even when buildings began to crumble. Time passed, and reality struck, hard. I began to cry thinking of the horror those innocent people must have felt. I felt helpless and unsafe. Seeing real people full of life jumping out the windows in desperation to save themselves from the flames was horrifying. My sister called me and we watched the tragedy together. Her brother-in-law was missing. He worked in the Pentagon. My friend, Mike called me. He was frantic he said that his parents were on a train from Philadelphia to Washington and in the middle of nowhere they had to get off of the train and seek refuge with absolute strangers. Luckily, my sister's brother-in-law was across the street as the plane hit the Pentagon and Mike's family was taken in by a nice couple in a Maryland. I cried and cried for days. Hoping and praying that no one that I knew was hurt or dead. I called everyone I knew and told them I loved them. I told them that I hoped everyone that they knew is safe. 9/11/01. That was the day I learned not to take life for granted and have no fear. Ever. Tell us your story: The radio station I listen to in the morning usually tells jokes and so the first mention of the airplane in the Tower went unheeded. When it was repeated, I turned on the television, awaking my husband who said, "Terrorists". I could not fathom it until the second plane hit. I felt so very sorry for those unfortunate victims and their family but when the building(s) collapsed, it was unbelievable. I find it so hard that the time and energy was spent to strike down innocent people for their chosen way of life. I support retaliation to punish those responsible and to prevent others from plotting against the U.S. I am so grateful to be an American. Tell us your story: I was sitting at my desk typing in the regular daily invoices for our Accounting Department when my two co-workers ran behind me shouting, "The WTC had been hit!" I turned up the radio on my desk and the local morning show confirmed the first plane crashing into the WTC. I headed for the conference room at my place of work and everyone was there watching the big screen TV as the second plane hit. Through that whole time, I kept telling myself, "Wake up! Wake up! It's only a dream!" or "This is a movie! Leave the theater!" How much I wished that I could have done either one of those things to make this horrible day leave my memory forever. While watching everything unfold in New York and Washington DC, we received news that one of our co workers' family members was working at the Pentagon and they had no way to find out if they were alive. Sadly, we found out a several days later that they had died as soon as the plane hit the building. After watching the towers collaspe, I ran from the conference room and I called my mother in Indiana. I told her that I loved her and my father very much and if I could, I would leave right now to be with them. I cried along with my mother during our conversation not knowing what would happen next and if I would ever see them again. After seeing all that happened during the morning of September 11, I knew that I would have to do something that would be a benefit to the families and victims. Since I couldn't go to New York to help, I decided that I could do something locally. I went to the American Red Cross and donated blood and then donated a blanket and water to a local trucking firm that was going to deliver goods to the people in New York. This gave me a sense of accomplishment that I knew would someone a world of good in a time of tragedy. It's was 11:22 a.m. when I heard these words, my boyfriend had just woken up and came downstairs. I looked down and noticed I was holding a full teaspoon of sugar in one hand and a now ice cold cup of coffee in the other. I had been standing there like that, preparing my first cup of coffe for the day. I had turned on the T.V.and I heard newscasters and then the screen came into focus,a plane turning straight into the World Trade Tower (the 2nd tower). My boyfriend kept asking me "Whats wrong"? Then he must have started to realize what was being said on the T.V. we stared in pure disbelief.I don't remember what my boyfriend did the rest of the day or when he left me alone in the kitchen or if he did. On September 11,2001 I was 28 and like many others, endured many a heartbreaks,lost loved ones,and have my share of bad childhood stories and have thrown myself numerous Poor Pity me Parties and enjoyed them, but this day I was experiencing feelings unknown to me yet I allowed these feelings instead of shouting them out like in the past, I actually welcomed them. My sister called me from Brodheadsville, PA. and told me that a plane hit the Twin Towers. I put the news on. We assumed it was a horrible accident. While watching the fire, we saw the second plane come in and thought we were watching an instant replay, until the reporters started screaming. At that point we realized our country was under attack. I immediately hung up and tried to reach my husband who is a Police Officer with the Bridge and Tunnel Authority, and is assigned to the Triboro Bridge. It took hours for us to reach each other. When my husband did get home, he told me that they saw the Towers go down from the Triboro Bridge. I asked, if it was like a movie, unreal, and he said "no, it was worse, beacause it was". My husband knew some of the officers who were lost. It was very scary. My little boy saw my crying al the time. We did not go out for days. Four weeks earlier, I had left my job of 10 years in Midtown Manhattan, and was very grateful not to have been there. I was 1,000 miles away from the horrors of that day, sitting in my 7th grade Computer Technology class, listening to what had happened a few short hours before. I went into the Energy wear store to open up. A customer came into the store and we were talking, I asked her was it snowing outside she said no "why" We both looked out the window and we saw dust,papers and folders falling out of the sky. A announcement came across the loud speakers that a plane had just hit one of the towers and if we had anybody that we knew who worked there to check and see if they were alright. I have a aunt who worked for Morgan& stanley so I was worried about her, as I was leaving out of the store the building started to shake and thats when the second plane had hit. We were told to stay in and not to leave but I ran out anyway. There were hundreds of people running down wall st I tried to avoid getting knocked down so I ran back into the building. There were people from everywhere running into the building,as the tower fell the windows were covered with a grey smoke at this time I thought that I was going to dye so I called home and told my family that I loved them and I told My husband to make sure he took good care of my 1 year old son.There were people who worked in the trade center who came to my job wet,crying,no shoes on,and just confused. Since I work in one of the tallest buildings in Columbus that is also connected to government buildings, my company announced that we could leave at about 11:00. All the government workers were dismissed earlier and I remember how quiet downtown was as I walked out of the building. The main downtown street "High Street" was closed to all traffic and I was unaware of this until I walked out of my building.I'm a bus rider and I couldn't catch my bus home at my normal stop since High Street was closed. Policemen were standing along High Street and they were antsy with hands on their guns. This made everyone afraid to ask what was happening with the buses. So I just walked. I had to walk over a mile to a bus stop on the outer edge of downtown to catch my bus. I waited almost two hours. People waiting for the bus decided to walk tremendous distances just to get home to their loved ones. The bus finally came and it was packed. I sat next to a lady who was hysterical and talking to herself incoherently. As soon as another seat became available, I moved. People chatted on the bus. As he pulled me to the the living room, with sleep still in my eyes the twin towers. I lowered myself to the couch and asked what was going on and as I did the second plane hit. I sat there with my jaws open trying to understand what I was seeing. My husband, who is a native of New York stood there in disbelief, OH MY GOD, was all I could say as I tried to comprehend this sight I asked him about his family who still lives there. Getting on the phone but not getting through. Busy.Busy. Busy That is when before my very eyes the unthinkable.As I unknowly held my breathe, I saw those lives vanish, I could not breathe. As the concrete dust enveloped the people at ground zero I held my breathe. How can I, so far away, recover from this horrible day? My children sleeping in thier beds, oblivious to the happenings while they slept. This anniversary, I cried all day. Did this day change me ? Yes it did. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2002 On September 11, 2001 I was in front of the mirror doing my hair and all of the sudden I hear my mom say ? Oh my gosh!? I ran into the loft watched the planes crash into the buildings on T.V.. My heart was beating so fast I was in shock along time I didn?t know what to do. I can?t imagine people walking into work all happy and the next thing you know people?s lives were gone the second the planes crashed. My mom told me that the planes had a lot of people in it and it was hijacked by Alqaeda to crash the planes into the World Trade Centers. She also told me that the American Government thought that Osama Bin Laden was behind all of this. I feel for all the people who were involved in September 11th, 2001. It was so sad that those people?s families are crushed because of what happened on September 11, 2001. Some people survived the crashes and some people didn?t. It was all over the news for weeks people were so shocked. There was nothing else on except for info on the terrorist attacks. The attacks is the reason there is a war going on against the United States and the Terrorism right now. It is very scary especially if you family member is a soldier. All of a sudden I heard this very loud crash. I thought that it was a car accident. But somebody told me to look up and thats when I saw the first building up in smoke. I just stood there in shock as the building continued to burn. Then a few moments later, I was still looking up when the second plane hit the other building. Thats when all the cell phones went out and i became disconnected from talking to my grandmother. The first thing I thought was that it must have been a accident. A few minutes later, maybe more, as we were teaching... They came in and said another plane had hit tower two. At that time we could not let the students know what was going on but we as adults wre dying to know. So I went to the curricullium office to watch TV. And it was so sur-real!! I saw people jumping out of the buildings and could not grasp that! To this day that sticks in my mind! I went back to the library and called my husband at work. Got his salesman (Matt) and said get on the TV or radio, we are being attacked. He was so surprised.. I think he must have thought I was nuts. By the time I got off the phone another person came into the library and said the Pentagon had been hit and there was another plane missing.( That ended up being the plane that crashed in Penn.) At that time I started feeling WHAT'S NEXT?? School went to lock down,people were calling loved ones that were supposed to be in New York that day. Classes stopped, and even worse as the buildings crumbled,I thought, God Help Us.. We all continued to watch the horror on TV as the people fled amoung the smoke. Tell us your story: We were in roll call at 0700, and our shift supervisor told us that the Twin Towers were just hit by possibly an airplane, and not to be surprised if we were busy at work that day. This frightened me, as I am a first term airman in the Airforce. I had only been at Mt. Home (my first assignment)since April of 2001. The first emotion that went through my mind was fear for our nation, the second was the fear of having to leave my son. At the time I was a single mom and my parents live in Indiana. While at work, I tried to tell my mother, without telling her anything, that we might be leaving and that she would have to come and get my son for me. As I was telling her, the second plane went through the tower. I knew then that it wasn't going to be too long. The day seemed to go slow, not knowing my fate. Shortly after lunch time we were called out to perform ops checks on the aerial refuel systems of the fighters. Most of them actually. We were told that we were supposed to be leaving within 48 hrs. All I could see, was my 3 year old son not remembering me when I finally would return after a 6 month deployment. THEN, I thought about the families that their children will never get to see them again because of some coward who hit us under the belt and ran! My adrenaline started pumping. I didn't even notice the fact that we were working a 15 hr shift and no lunch. I wanted to get the person who did this. I didn't leave the states until Novemeber. When I got over there to the middle east, reality of where I was sunk in. I didn't know if we should trust our host nation, if they were going to set us up for failure and then TRY and take advantage of us while being on their soil or not. All I knew is that I was there for our nation and had a job. I would get so excited when the jets would come back without bombs on them, knowing that they had hit somebody/thing. When I heard that they were killing our troops after taking them as POW's, I was outraged. Then to hear that one of our natural born citizens was fighting on their side, enraged me. To know that there were ground troops over there trying to protect our United States and some losing their lives because of it. After that I felt free to write messages on the ammunitions that were being dropped. "Osama, you took me away from my family on Christmas. Now it is time to take you away from yours, forever." This will probably continue on for a long time...I don't know. It is a small price to pay for all the people's lives that those heartless cowards have taken. Soldiers included! BUT THAT DAY MY 5YR OLD WAS SICK AND HER DAD CAME TO SEE HER AND WE WERE JUST TALKING ABOUT KID STUFF AND ALL OF A SUDDEN I HEARD CHARLIE (from good morning america) SAY THAT A PLANE HAD HIT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER, ME THINKING THAT IT WAS JUST AN ACCIDENT, I REALLY DID'NT GET WHEN THE SECOND PLANE HIT UNTIL IT WAS SAID.
