Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Julia and I remember September 11, 2001. I was getting ready for my college classes after working out that morning. My boyfriend Joe and I were listening to the news while fixing our lunches and preparing for the day ahead. Suddenly Matt Lauer on the Today Show said "A plane has just crashed into the World Trade Center." Commercials came on and then a media clip showed the plane crashing into the first tower. I yelled for Joe to come and see this and we watched horrified as the crash was being replayed. Then a few minutes later we saw another plane hit the World Trade Center's second tower. Joe said, "That's not an accident, that is terrorism." I was speechless and felt smothered. I grabbed Joe and hugged him so tight as we learned that it was indeed terrorism on American soil. We reluctantly went to our classes and couldn't even think straight. I went to my part-time job at the Provost's office and was allowed to listen to the news while working. President Grube, of Georgia Southern University, cancelled the rest of the day's classes and let us go home early. I immediately went to Joe's and laid there in his arms as we watched the media clips replay not only the two planes hitting the WTC, but also the Pentagon and the Pittsburg incidents. I felt so empty, so sad, and so bewildered that this happened. Luckily my parents and my boyfriend's family were nowhere near the places that were hit. But we had all been scared and confused. America had been terrorized. We've all grown closer as the year has passed. I have become even more dedicated to my fight for justice and graduated from college with a degree in Justice Studies. My life has been affected by this, as have the lives of all Americans, but my life will be dedicated to making a positive difference in this world. I know now that I was put here on this earth, in America, in order to spread love and peace and make sure that justice prevails. I was on a grief chat line, because I had lost my husband April 20. While talking, someone said, "Hey, the World Trade Center had been hit." I thought it was probably and accident. Then, later, I heard the next one was hit. Then about the plane in PA and the Pentegon. I was really beside myself. Already in lots of grief. I was devastated, as everyone was. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I arrived at work unusually early that morning, before the attacks were announced on the radio. Because we were in the process of installing an upgraded telecommunications system, I had no access to the Internet or email. Working on that gorgeous morning at President Andrew Jackson's farm, I was engrossed in my work. Isolated from the outside world, I did not know what had happened for nearly two hours. When I finally heard the news from coworkers, I ran to the Visitor's Center, which is the only building at the property with a television. I'll never forget those horrific images on the fuzzy little tv screen. There were split-screen images of the WTC and the Pentagon, both ablaze. Other jets were unaccounted for. The President was on Air Force One somewhere. The White House had been evacuated. The federal government had shut down all the airports and grounded all flights. I suddenly remembered that a fraternity brother worked in the WTC, and another buddy was in Chicago on business. As a Gen Xer dependent on technology and instant communications, I had to get home, where I had cable tv and high-speed Internet. I was totally freaking out, near panic. I couldn't just stand around watching a tv with rabbit ears. I tried using my cell phone to call out, but the lines were already jammed. I jumped in my car and rushed home at breakneck speed. Seemed everyone was listening to their car radios, in shock. It reminded me of a scene from "War of the Worlds." Was this real? Confusion. What was happening? When I got home 5 minutes later, I emailed my mom in Orlando, my friends in Atlanta, Chicago, and elsewhere. Turned on CNN and jumped online. I couldn't take my eyes of the screen. Finally, emails were returned. Everyone was safe. Chicago skyscrapers had been evacuated. My friend in Atlanta was in communications with the family of our fraternity brother in NYC. He had gotten out of the WTC just in time, and had managed to call his mom in Tennessee. I spent the rest of the day at home, glued to CNN and staying in communication with my friends and family spread across the country via email and AOL. On that day, I was extremely grateful for modern technology that allowed me to communicate with my loved ones nearly instantly across the country from my little apartment in Nashville. At 10 AM local time (9 AM in New York)a colleague from school called me: "Gonzalo, turn on CNN, please! It's so horrible!". That we did, and for the next hours, and days, we were struck by horror, pain, and dismay. We had lived very close to the Big Apple in 1991, while I was teaching in Bergen Community College, Paramus, NJ. We had learn to love the city the same way we love Buenos Aires.And we mourned with NY and all America the deaths of their people, which we sincerely felt our own.That same day I wrote a tribute,in Spanish, as an eulogy for the dead which I'd love to share with all who are insterested. Enjoying one of the greatest, most care free activities on the planet, while the nation was in turmoil. While most people were crying, or watching in awe at the horrific scenes unfolding on their television, or for some, down the street, I was experiencing bliss, in the Pacific Ocean. Me and my other friends on the surf team from our school had no idea what happened until we got home. When I got home, my whole family was up. My dad had just gotten home from Orange County Airport, where his flight to NEW YORK CITY had been cancelled. They looked at me with penetrating eyes. Five minutes ago, my biggest care had been the hole in the knee of my wetsuit. It's incredible how everything can change in the blink of an eye. In a strange way, I'm glad I was surfing when the tower was hit. I am one of probably 1000 people in the entire world to say that I was in the ocean when the terrorists struck home. All of the sudden the T.V. clicked on and the first thing i saw was a plane hitting the fist tower. At that time i was a little confused and really did not know what was happening. There were a lot of questions asked on why they were showing that. No sooner could i say what is going on another plane hit the second tower. After that i think everyone pretty much stopped and dropped what they were doing and had their eyes glued to the T.V.. We did not get let out of school, but we did watch the news in every other class. All of this happend during our homcoming week, so we had float parties and sports. All the sports were cancelled. The float parties too, except the sophomore class of 2004, my class. So of course i went to the float party and my parents came to get me because they wanted our family to be together on that day. My dad bought six tapes and just kept putting them into the vcr one after another. For about the next 2-3 weeks i was just glued to the T.V. wondering and hoping they find everyone. Unfortunatly they didn't and i prayed for the families that lost their loved ones. Even though i was not living in New York or did not have a relative living there, what happend on Sept. 11 effected me and many others in my city, because all we could think and talk about is what is going to happen next? and what if it is Michigan next? Tell us your story: I was near the end of my daily 28 mile commute to work when the the first announcement came over the car radio that an airliner had struck one of the Twin Towers in NYC. At first it seemed like a terrible accident. Got to work and turned on the radio for more news of the plane crash only to hear that another plane had crashed into the other Twin Tower and then the awful feeling that these were no accidents. One of the guys in the office went out to buy a portable TV for the office so that for most of the rest of the day, we stood around in a state of shock while trying to stay functional for the work that we were supposed to be doing. I will never forget the shock and sorrow for those lives so wantonly taken away from us and the tragedy that those who perpretated these horrible events could be led into such acts by such a mis-guided philosophy. While we attempt to deal with these people in our own pathetic ways, my real belief is that they will meet their appropriate judgements in whatever comes beyond this life as we know it. After she was off the telephone she turned on the television. My class saw one of the World Trade Center burning. Then, out of the blue coming across the screen there was another plane flying toward the second World Trade Center. The plane hit the World Trade Center and they blew up in flames. The World Trade Center was burning through out the top floors. When that took place I thought about my family and my friends that where near the World Trade Center or in them. At first when she got the phone call I thought it was a prank. Then when I knew in my next period class that it was no prank. I saw the World Trade Centers collapse and tumble down. I was shocked when I heard some one survived from a high floor. It was amazing what I saw and noticed for the first time. I felt sorry that some families lost their family members. In the beginning I thought that who ever did this that they should be punished severely. After awhile I thought it through a little more and said that if we kill innocent people we would be sinking down to their level. I figure that if we sink down to their level that we are just like them. I am glad that we tried to help the innocent people that were in Afghanistan. Now if we had to kill some innocent people to get the one who ordered that terrorist attack then that is what we had to do. Still there is no excuse for killing innocent people if we don't have to. The President will do what is necessary for the good of America. I like the President's decision to help the Afghanistan people get away from Osama bin Laden. I was wondering if there is ever going to be peace through out the known world. With the way people act in different countries I think not. If the people in other countries would stop thinking we are against them and start to think that everyone is equal and no one is higher or lower in the human race then maybe, just maybe, we would have peace through out the world. I think that once we accomplish that then we might not have any more wars. The people of other countries might just realize that the rights we have in America are entitled to everyone and only guaranteed by the type of government chosen by the people. Osama bin Laden has made some terrible mistakes and should be punished for them but still he does not deserve to die. It will take some time to catch bin Laden, to bring him to justice but I'm not saying that we won't get him. You know that there is no one that knows that land better then Osama bin Laden and his soldiers. My reaction to September eleventh was very shocking. My whole school was expressing the shock of the plane crashes the same way I did. I'm not sure if they still feel that way or not but I know I don't feel that we should kill Osama bin Laden when we catch him or if we catch him. When the planes crashed I felt that the people who lost family members should have the right to beat Osama bin Laden out of his mind. I mean just think if you lost a family member would you want to hurt or even kill the one who did that to them. The news came across the radio on the Howard Stern show (who doesnt want to laugh in the morning?)... I nearly crashed my car. Ft Lauderdale as my location is deceptive, I am a New Jersey native, my entire family lives in northern New Jersey. I pulled into Whole Foods market in Plantation, FL in near shock. At this point only one plane had struck so I was unaware of the totality of what was going on. As usual I got my coffee and informed the cashier that the tower had been hit, they had not heard yet. I got back in my car and actually left the coffee on the roof as I drove away (something I remembered later). I suppose I was in a state of semi-shock. Then I heard the news of the second hit and the realization that we were under attack. Immediately I tried to raise my family on my cell phone to no avail. As of right now all I knew was: -My brother had been working in the basement of the towers for a few months for a telecommunications company. He is the type of person who would run into a burning building (he performed CPR on a dying man at Costco once a few years earlier, it was just his nature) -My mother works for the state of NJ and therefore works in a building that could be a target. -Friends and family live and work in NY Panic. I could not reach anyone. I made it to work in one piece only to be glued to my computer watching what was going on. One collapse... then two... The only contact I had with my family was my cousin who was in an apartment overlooking central park.. she was scared. I finally was able to reach my family at about 2pm. My brother was transferred from that project the friday before. My cousin's husband ran 30 blocks home after being in the shadow of the buildings during the attack. Friends I knew happened to not go to work that day... and some did... My family was untouched. But 2 of my high school friends were not so lucky. I had lost touch with them but they were regular people who I grew up with, played ball with etc. My age, dead for no reason beyond unreasonable hate. I learned later of the stories of friends searching the hospitals for weeks.. I can only ponder the horror I was spared in my family. Recently streets in my hometown were renamed in their honor. My seventh grade science teacher at the Marlboro Middle School came in and solemnly informed us that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers, one into the Pentagon, and one in Pennsylvania. My teacher explained in detail what had happened earlier that morning. He answered all of our questions, so we understood everything. We ended up talking the whole forty-two minute period about the hijacked planes and their final destinations. I didn't realize, at first, how big of an event this was. I had never heard of the Pentagon, and planes crashed all the time. It wasn't until I got home and saw the news that I started to realize something HUGE had happened. All TV and radio stations were broadcasting the news. Hebrew school was cancelled, and I didn't go to soccer practice. I was home, watching pictures and videos of the horrific images and people's reactions. At school the next day, and for days after, the American flag flew at half-mast. We had moments of silence for the victims and their families. Throughout the year, I have read numerous stories by people who were personally affected by it. One story was about a girl when, a few years ago, was saved from cancer by a bone marrow transplant. Her donor was a New York firefighter. A couple years and two visits later, he was killed at Ground Zero. Another was about a man who had dedicated the last year to rebuilding the Pentagon, where his son worked and died. I have also heard stories about people who got phone calls from their spouses, telling them that they loved them. They later died trying to take control of the plane. All these stories, pictures, and scenes have touched my life forever. September 11th has changed my life in many ways. One lesson I have learned is that the worst can sometimes bring out the best in people. The actions of the terrorists brought out American spirit. Proof of that can be seen on cars, houses, and buildings. the American flag can be seen everywhere. The leadership roles taken by the passengers on Flight 93, is also a great example of patriotism. September 11th has also taught me that life goes on, no matter what. My cousin was born on that fateful day and the horror of his birthday hasn't affected his childhood. He constantly reminds me that we should not dwell on the bad. It is very important to remember and honor the bad things, but it is also important to rejoice in the good. In the years to come, when students like me study September 11th, as we study the Battle at Gettysburg today, there are some things I want people to remember. I want them to remember the heroic acts of Flight 93. I want people to remember the enormous amount of innocent civilians killed. I want them to remember the stories of people personally affected. I want them to remember the patriotism caused by that fateful morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2OO2. Some of the kids left my English class because over the loud speaker the principal said that if any kids in the school have parents that work in the World Trade Center please come to the office. My teachers were talking about what happened and then they started crying in front of all of us. For the rest of the day every body was in a bad mood or was crying. When I got home I put on the news and every channel was about the World Trade Center getting bombed. This terrible happening dominated our lives for the next 8 months on TV, Radio and newspaper. It seemed like we just couldn?t stop talking about it there were about 5,000 people that day in the World Trade Center. Approximately 2,800 people died of the 5,000. In the Pentagon in Washington D.C. 1,125 people working that day. That?s a lot of lives lost. I think this happen because we were too relaxed about security in our country. We though we are a superior country and that it could never happen here. We need to stop people from coming into our country and watch our own backs. We don?t know who are the terrorists here and who are not, so it can happen again. They are talking about rebuilding the World Trade Center on the same site, but I don?t think should do that on the same site because it?s a memorial spot or like a grove. New York has lots and a lot of money from 9/11 and some has the federal government. Hopefully everything will get back to normal but in some ways living locking over you shoulder. Our men and women of the army are in Afghanistan defending us, it?s a shame because they have to this because of one creep. I hope wear ever he is he is suffering or is dead. Coming this Wednesday 9/11/02 is the one-year anniversary of this terrible tragedy. There will be a lot of memorial services all over the country and sadness and I hope there will be nothing bad happen ever again. I am originally from Phila Pa and can tell you that being away from my family during this time was the worst time of my life. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. We were sent home from work in the early am, in time enough due to the hour difference, to see the second plane hit the tower. I sat mesmerized in front of the tv all day and into the night. I never made it to work the next day because I was too upset. I didn't even know anyone who was touched by this tradgedy and couldn't even begin to walk in the shoes of those who had loved ones affected by 9-11. My 9th wedding anniversary was the 12th but who could think of celebrating anything after this event. I was due to fly home on the 15th and back out to Milwaukee again on the 18th but was terrified of getting on a plane. My husband ended up driving out for a week to calm me down and I finally ended up flying home two weeks later. Even today well over a year later I still remember those events like it was yesterday. Something always reminds me of 9-11, whether its a glance at office buildings or just watching people on thier way to work, even a ride in an office elevator makes me wonder what people in the trade center were thinking when all hell broke loose. I think everday as I go about my daily routine that these people were doing the same thing and this could have happened in any major US city. I'll never forget the footage of people jumping out of the towers and images of people posting pictures of the loved one around New York city. These memories will remain with me forever. So many people died, but yet so many were saved. This will forever be a mark on history. My generation will live with the memories for all of our days. 9/11 was a tragic day, but at the same time brought America together like never before. Like many people in the world I too was affected. But I wasn?t directly affected, fortunately I didn?t know anyone who personally affected, or was killed. September Eleventh brought up a lot in me. It made me sad, for all the people that died in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Somerset County and the ones and the plane that went through so much. I was also angered at the people that did this, the terrorists. All these emotions whirling at once were something I had never felt before that day. Many people I know, family and friends were also affected. However, like me, they were not directly affected; they were hurt but didn?t know someone who died. Many people around me were saddened, angry and many feelings that weren?t so good. The world was shocked; nothing in my lifetime had been like this. Unlike some wars, this attack was out of no where to the normal citizen. I feel that my generation will be forever changed by the events of 9/11, people will always remember where they were when news broke, they will always remember the horrific scenes, but I hope that people remember the people that risked their lives to save others, those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to spare many. We should always remember the unity of America after 9/11 the surge of patriotism, the feeling of being proud for being an American. With so much happening in the last year, horrific events, military actions, the surge of emotions and patriotism, I feel that 9/11 was a horrific day that brought about so much, the good and the bad.
