I was fortunate enough to work at a store owned by a friend of mine and I was allowed to watch television while on the job. I remember watching television and a special report was broadcasted. It told of a plane crashing into one of the buildings of the World Trade Center. Reports were sketchy at that time and I was led to believe it was a small plane and I instantly thought it must of been an accident. Visions of a pilot having a heart attack while flying the plane flooded into my head. But then the second plane struck the other tower. All I could think of was my daughter at home and how I wanted so badly to be with her. Then the reports started telling of hits on the pentagon and another plane down in a field. I just screamed,"What the hell is going on?" I called my house to speak to my daughter. I literally thought we were under attack and that it was the end of the world! I literally started crying at work in front of all of my customers, but they were very understanding. When the towers fell, I think I cried the hardest then. When I got out of work I went home, hugged my daughter, and did what most Americans did; I watched the television for hours and days on end. I also cried alot and hugged my daughter and husband much tighter than I ever have before. May God Bless everyone! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At home, with a 2 1/2 year old and eight months pregnant my husband called me telling me to turn on the news. I turned on CNN to see one of the World Trade Center towers on fire. It was terrible to see but not frightening- at that point the news commentators were still speculating on the cause. Most still thought it an accident. As I watched I could see another plane, live, heading for the tower. At first I thought it was a replay of the first tower. Then I knew it wasn't. It was clear then that no one knew what was going on but that it was all intentional. I could not leave the TV. I quickly feed my two year old, thankul that he could play by himself some. I started making phone calls. I called a close friend here in Princeton to ask if she was watching the news. She was. She was upset and couldn't talk. Her father, in New York on business, was in one of the towers. I got off the phone stunned. There were several friends of mine whose husbands worked in town- even in the towers. I started making calls. I cried with most of them. We started a network, calling everyone to make sure they were ok or had someone with them while they waited news. Then the Pentagon was hit. My father in law works there. I had to call my husband and tell him. Very difficult. I called my mother in law- she had no word but would try to get in touch with him. She was calm and I was glad of that. I couldn't eat and I was starting to feel sick. I could feel my heart pounding. I was very very afraid. When the plane went down in Pennsylvania, I felt very vunerable-in the middle, literally, of it all. I wanted to pack the car and leave. Go somewhere. They had no idea how many planes where out there and they scrambled to get them accounted for and landed. I called my friend again, and offered to watch her young daughter while she awaited news on her father. It was comforting, a bit, to watch the young ones play and sing oblivious. Soon after I heard from my mother in law that my father in law was ok. I was very happy to make that call to my husband. The TV never went off that day, or for several days, it seemed. It was instantaniously different- a different world, and new feelings. I was afraid for my son, for my unborn child. I was afraid he wouldn't be born. The circumstances of his impending birth felt threatened and unclear. I was sure that nothing would be a certainity again. I could not even be sure the next day would come. It is now amazing to me, on the last day of February 2002, how normal life seems again. So soon. And yet, there it is- in every day life; on shows, in the news, in the way we go about our day with new security and restrictions. All my friends' husbands were accounted for and safe. And I'm sure I've gotten a lot of calls too, but the phones (land and cellular) are down (payphones are working, so if you have other loved ones here, they may be able to contact you from a payphone, though the lines are very, very long.) So, I thought I would take the step of e-mailing just about everyone I know (thank G-d for the internet). If I missed anyone, please forward this out. I am OK. For those of you who worried about me, I do appreciate it. I live a good mile, mile and a half from where the World Trade Center used to be - so, I was never in any danger. Most of you will not be surprised to hear that I was asleep when the attacks occurred. I was awoken by my roommate, Charles, at around 10:15AM, Eastern Time, shortly after the second tower collapsed. After watching a little on TV, and heading up to a friend's room to look out his window, I grabbed my camera and walked south, towards the site. The streets were almost entirely empty of automobile traffic. 90% of vehicles were police/fire/rescue or public utlities (electric/phone). All civilian vehicles were heading in the opposite direction. There was a huge plume of dark gray smoke coming from where the WTC used to be. Fortunately, the wind is blowing strongly to the southeast, sending the smoke out into the ocean, and not north over Manhattan, or East into Jersey. A number of people were heading downtown, like I was - many with cameras or camcorders. I reached road blocks around Worth St, about 12 blocks north of the WTC. Police were there. I also saw FBI, ATF, federal customs police, US Marshalls, NYFD, and many other city and federal agencies. I turned west and tried to head to the Hudson river to try and head south from there, but was again stopped by road blocks. The West Side Drive is shut down, for emergency traffic only. So I turned East. I made it to Foley Square, where I worked this past summer - about a 10 minute walk from the WTC. Incidentally, if this had happened two months ago, I quite possibly would have been exiting my train in the basement of the WTC at the time of the attack. A sobering thought. Foley Square is where the state and federal court houses are, in addition to a number of state and federal government office buildings. All were closed, heavily patrolled by armed officers - men with shotguns and machine guns - not a usual sight anywhere in the US. I had my walkman with me and was listening to the radio. Reports were coming in from all over - some confirmed, some speculation. But the scene on the streets was somewhat surreal. It was generally calm. People were moving orderly, very few tried to pass the road blocks. It was eerily quiet except for the sounds of sirens. Throughout my walk, a number of people saw I had a radio and asked me for the latest news. There were also large crowds of people gathered around stopped cars and trucks listening to their radios. Many people all over had surgical masks on, or were covering their mouthes and noses with t-shirts, rags, or paper towels. From there, I went even further East, to the foot of the Brooklyn Bridge, and then turned south. This area was almost entirely deserted as it was in the past of the blown smoke and ash. I walked down Water St, and turned West on Wall St. This area seemed to be the most heavily hit. There was a good inch and a half of ash coving the street. Parked cars were covered with the ash. Small bits of debris were floating down from the sky - paper and such. I picked up a piece of what looks like a financial spreadsheet printout - the edges of the paper charred - along with a charred metal vertical blind, which presumably floated down from the WTC. I made it all the way to the New York Stock Exchange - perhaps 4 blocks from the WTC. There I encountered more barricades. I also had to turn back because the ask and smoke was getting too thick. The sun was blotted out from the smoke, which was turning more white, from the dark black it was when I left my building earlier this morning. I saw a number of Air Force fighter planes circling the city, but aside from them and a few news helicopters, the sky was empty of air traffic. I made it almost all the way south to Battery Park before I reached another road block. Then I turned for home. I'm going to try and donate blood, by the rumors are that the lines to do so are many hours long. Maybe tomorrow. Again the scene was just very surreal. I could not get close to the WTC. So it was hard to visualize the unimaginable carnage and devastation and loss of human life that occurred there. People overall were very calm and orderly. Police and fire were likewise calm and orderly. I saw long lines of ambulances and fire trucks, waiting to approach the WTC to search for any survivors. I think it will become even more surreal in the coming days. I can't even imagine looking south towards downtown and not seeing the two massive buildings which defined the skyline. I hope that those responsible will be brought to justice - or perhaps simply wiped off the face of this planet. I think when we all wake up tomorrow, we awake to find a very different world that the one we woke up to this morning. For those of you with friends or loved ones in NY or DC or on an airliner, my thoughts and prayers go out to them. I think in the time that it took me to write this e-mail, my phone is working again (but not my cell) - so maybe you can now contact them on the phone. It was weird because usually my mom doesn't have the news on down stairs when she is making breakfast. Then I looked at the tv, the twin towers were on fire, and a plane was crashed in it! At first I thought it was on big deal, an accident of some sort. I just went about my day as usual. By 6:30, it was time to head out for the bus. Everyone at my bus stop was talking about what had happened earlier this morning. I wondered if all these people really watch the news. I work from home one day a week and I was taking care of my 4 month old daughter along with my mother. A call came from my sister in Jersey City, New Jersey telling us to turn on the TV. We did and simply could not believe what we were seeing. As the events unfolded I vividly remember holding my daughter in my arms as she girgled and smiled. She had no idea what was happening. This was the first time I thought about whether I had made a mistake in bringing her into a world where tragedies like this happen. I thought about this and really struggle with it for weeks. I did ultimately came to a conclusion that makes sense to me. I brought my daughter into this world to make it a better place and the events of September 11th make me believe even more in that goal. She is part of the future and I will do everything I can to teach her to fight hatred in all its forms, respect diversity and human life, and contribute to the world in a positive manner. If all of us who have a hand in shaping the future take this perspective the people who died in this horrible event will have contributed to the world more than they could have imagined. I looked at the clock and I was wondering why he kept calling so early, so I finally took the call. He told me to get up and turn on the TV. I said, "Which channel?" He said, "Doesn't matter, it's Armageddon." I stood in my living room frozen, I was so angry and scared at the same time. I was losing it, truly losing it, I couldn't comprehend what I was watching. I felt so naive to have thought that something like this was impossible, and I didn't know what to do next. Then CNBC showed an image, and I'll never forget it for as long as I live. It was a statue of Thomas Jefferson, and there was ash and debris falling all around it, and I thought to myself, "Thomas Jefferson and all of the people who founded this country risked their lives to establish what we have here today. If he were here right now, what would he do? What would he think? And that's when I made a choice. You can either be afraid of everything for the rest of your life or you can fear nothing. I chose to fear nothing. This country and all it's freedoms are worth fighting for, and to quote the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. : "If a man has nothing to die for, then he isn't fit to live." I will live my life without fear, without any regrets and without hesitation. I was truly inspired by how the city of New York came together at it's most needed hour. I was thinking in my mind, if there are any people in the world who can overcome this, it's got to be New Yorkers. I was right. I don't know what the future holds for all of us, all around the world, but I have faith that peace will overcome the evils of this world. As I entered the room I noticed A lot of students galthered around the T.V. moniter that was mounted high in the corner of the room. As I moved closer to try to see what was on the t.v. screen, I heard a student say " oh my god". And then I saw it, one of the twin towers was on fire. At first I didn't recognise where this building was, or what building was on fire. There, among at least fifty students, stood a silence I will never forget. I rushed to class, and soon after someone came in and told us that a second plane had crashed in to the other tower. At that instant I knew it was an attack on the United States. Class did not last very long after that. Leaving the building the sky looked different, and the light outside was dim. And I flunked my Ancient Art History class that semester. And I don't care. I was at work and I had no immediate knowledge that anything besides the ordinary was going on. Then a co-worker came by my machine and told me that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. He didn't know what was going on, he had heard it from another employee.I remember thinking, how could anybody possibly hit something like that without meaning to, and yet it really didn't dawn on me that it was anything but an accident. Then when I found out about the second plane hitting, I thought, Oh my God. There was no doubt in my mind then as to what was happening. It was a very scary day. I know that day I thanked God that I didn't live in a big city, and I prayed constantly for those who did. I couldn't wait to leave work that day and find out what was going on for myself. When I finally got home, my husband was sitting in front of the t.v. and I joined him. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I have recently returned to college to finish my Bachelor's degree in Secondary Education/History. I am married and have two children (14 and 10 yrs. old.) I was getting my daughter off to school, watching Good Morning America as I do every morning, when news broke that 'something' hit the WTC tower. I was intently watching when the New York City reporter screamed, "Oh my God!" and then the world watched as the second tower was hit by a second plane. As soon as the initial shock wore off, I was impressed with the fact that I was watching, in real time, history taking place right before my eyes. I kept thinking about generations before me saying, "I remember where I was when Kennedy was shot." Most of history we have learned about in delayed time. But here I was witnessing something that I would most certainly be teaching from a textbook someday. Very soon I realized that I had the opportunity to create a primary document of my own. I grabbed my homework notebook and began jotting down quotes, comments, estimates, times, statistics, etc. In the end I knew this was my "therapy" and a way of coping with what was going on around me. I kept that notebook with me and made constant notes of what was happening throughout the next few days. I compiled these short descriptions into an informal document that I distributed to my family and children for future reference. As historians we seem to be constantly defending the 'need' to study history. We too often hear the question, "Why do I have to study this stuff?!" I now point people to the events of September 11th and ask them, "Do we want students in 20 years, or 50 years, or 100 years from now to simply memorize the date 'September 11, 2001' without knowing the events that led up to the terrorist attack - or the surge of patriotism and unification that happened in America? Do we want them to know what happened to our everyday lives - the shock, fear, and uncertainty? What about our economic recovery, or President Bush's reaction to the threat? We do not know what affect this will have on an entire generation of children that experienced this transformation of American society. Will they be the next greatest generation? We cannot learn about historical events in a vacuum. Events are intricately woven together with causes and effects. Nor can we minimize them to just a date in history. We should learn this from September 11. The Civil War, per se, is not just a period of time from 1861-1865. Just as September 11 was not just a day in 2001. September 11 was a tumultuous day in America. But it was also a day for me that cemented my resolve to help students understand about the reasons they "have to study History." Tell us your story: One of our radio stations that we normally have tuned into every work morning before leaving the house for work - KOGO 600 - was announcing some information that was either confusing to me or unclear on their end. The original report from KOGO told about a potential small aircraft flying into one of the towers. All I could think of was what fool got so lost in the skyscrapers of New York. The radio staff from our local station was taking information from their wires and eventually switched to a New York affiliate where I heard the call go out to emergency workers to come into the World Trade Center to help with a rescure. They asked for personnel who had just got off shifts to come back, people who were on their days off to come back to help because of an emergency. There was even a caller to the New York station that was looking through high powered binoculars and saw things that must have been extremely frightening. Then there were screams from this caller and his wife about planes striking the towers. I went blank and stood still and tried to figure out what was happening. Well here I am putting on makeup and preparing for another workday. But with every bit of news information from the radio, it drew me away from mirror, makeup, closet and closer to getting some visuals from T.V. What I saw next when I turned on the television would be different from anything historical I would ever see. The reporting from the T.V. station told the story of one large plane into the first tower, another into the second tower. By the time I heard and saw the second plane into the second tower, the words were falling from my lips - without words - in silent speach - Terrorists. I went numb from that point. Going through the motions, here on the West coast, I completed myself for work, entered my vehicle and drove to work with many others in traffic that morning who appeared to be clutched to their vehicle radios. I didn't know whether I was ready for work or to turn the wheel to turn around and go home and phone my family to be close. I didn't know what to plan for. But I continued to my office. Throughout the day it was the same. Our Company immediately rushed out to purchase televisions for all of our facility lunchrooms. I saw one of our machinists during the day frozen in a glazed stare at one of the televisions viewing the events from the morning -- the towers, the Pentagon and the field in Pennsylvania. The emotions running through my Company that day were of fear, apprehension, grief and a unspoken appeal to our leaders -- where do we go from here? If this is what it felt like during Pearl Harbor, I didn't like it one bit. I didn't like feeling like I (my country) was to blame for something we didn't bring about. I was in my second period class and my teacher was absent so we had a diffrent teacher she told us that she herd on the radio that the Wolrd Trade Center was hit by two aircrafts. During Lunch I went to the security desk and they had the radio on and I herd that the World Trade Center was hit by two plains. After that I decided to walk around the ground floor and seen a Televison on but it was a spanish channel and it was on mute I couldn't understand what they were saying then they showed the footage of the smoke from the World Trade Center. I walked to the front door and seen students leaving with there parents because they were worried. After lunch they told us to all go to the office if we lived in a certin area of Queens. So I went to the office and they told us that we had to walk home with all the people that lived close to where I live and we all walked home. I got home and looked out my window and saw smoke by the World Trade Center once stood. About a half hour later my mom came home and hung out till my dad got home. We were worried about how he would get home then we found out when he got home he walked over the 59th Street bridge. We watched televsion and saw tower seven colapse right before our eyes. Two hous later I went to bed and so did my parents. This day is a day that will live in infamy just like Pearl Harbor. I was in the kitchen straightening up from breakfast with the TV on. I had "Good News America" on and they started talking about a fire in one of the towers at the World Trade Centers. They were not sure what had happened but it was obvious that it was something big so I stopped what I was doing and gave the TV my full attention. While they were discussing what could have happened and showing the smoke and fire on the right side of the TV screen a passenger plane came into view, before anyone knew what was happeneing this plane come around and slammed into the other tower. And it became clear to me and to the people on the news that the United States was under attack. **Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell us how. Yes, my life has changed. I never enjoyed flying before but now I can't even imagine getting on a plane. I tried to say my prayers before but I thank god for another day. I try to be more compassionate toward other people. I find myself looking up whenever I hear a plane. **What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think that people should remember that these people were just going about their everyday lives and in an instant hundreds of thousands of lives were changed. As soon as I realized that we were being attacked I immediately went to the closet and brought out our American flag (which to this point had only been flown on patriotic holidays). That flag has remained up since that day and I can't bring myself to take it down. I have always been very sentimental about the American flag and all that is stands for but it reminds me how proud that I am to be an American when I see all the other flags. When I got out of my shower, the tv screen showed a building on fire. I then listened to Katie Couric report on a fire at the World Trade Center. Then, nobody was really sure what was going on. They were talking to a reporter on the ground who said she was sure a jet had flown into the building. Just as she said that, Matt Lauer was saying "another plane just crashed into the other tower" I actually witnessed the 2nd plane crashing into the tower. I couldn't believe what I was watching. I thought it was some sort of horrible accident until that 2nd plane hit. Everyone knew then, we were dealing with something so evil, it was not of this world. How can human beings do this unspeakable thing to other human beings? I have a 9 year old daughter, she had many sleepless nights, and questions about how someone could be so evil. These were hard questions, for parents to answer. We got her through it, she made American Flags, she made cards for family, she knows that "good" far outweighs "evil". We love this country now more than we ever have. We value life here, we will always value life. We live in the greatest country on the face of the earth. That is the message I teach her daily. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Just 4 weeks prior to the morning of 9/11 my husband had given the gift of life. He donated 64% of his liver to my father. The morning of September 11, we had arrived at Lawrece Memorial Hospital for a follow up appointment. My husband was very weak and frail at the time. As we walked into the lobby for admitting I noticed several people gathered around a television. I could see it from where we stood waiting our turn in line and although I could not hear it the image was enough. A plane had flown into the world trade center. As my husband finish his paperwork people were speaking ot each other of how there had been a terrible "accident". Immediatly I said to my husband "The World Trade Center has been attacked". Im not sure how I knew, I just did. It didnt seem reasonable that a plane would "accidently" hit this enormous building... I couldnt concieve it as an accident, as an "uhoh". We stepped into the elevator and proceeded to the next waiting room for tests. The staff and other patients were chatting about the event. Just then, as if a confirmation of my gut instince, the theory I had over this being intentional... another plane hit. The feeling in this room is for the most part unexplainable. Jaws dropped, eyes welling with tears, people obviously struggling to catch their breath, the most uncomfortable silence I personaly had ever felt. It was apparent to us all in that room, at this point some 40 patients and staff... in complete shock knowing that we are witnessing an American tragedy and yet are unable to help our fellow Americans... our fellow humans. We watched in horror as another plane was announced to have been flown into the Pentagon, as people in the world trade center began to make the most horific choices to try and either save their lives or end their misery, im not sure. Some of the sequences are now blurry to me... shock seems to do that to a person. Fear sets in and confusion takes control over ones rational thoughts. Personaly I had never been prepped for such a thing... not to witness it, and certainly not what steps to take next. The thought of my children, how they were all in seperate schools at the time, if I should leave and go get them, news reports informed us the national guard would be visible on highways and any other place they deemed nessesary. Were we here in Boston in danger? Would I make it to my children? If I was able to get them, were was I supposed to go? My parents, did they need me? How could I get to all of the people I needed to be with in a relativly short period of time? In that room, the day of September 11, 2001 some 40 plus people shared a terrifying, horrible experience. I dont know that I would remember these people if I saw them again. Im almost certain that fear takes on a different facial expression than what one would carry another day, in another time. I can tell you that we had for at least a fraction of time a bond to one another that I know will always last. Im fortunate enough to say I did not personaly know anyone who was in the buildings at the time, or on the planes or ground. I know we all changed that day. Images are seered into our minds, feelings of helplessness have never run so deep, pride of being an American never before so heavily felt amoung a nation, wishing we could turn back time, change things somehow. Tell us your story: We were sitting in class, learning something totally insignificant it seems now, when one of the other instructors came into our class and told us what happened. We found a T.V. (with not so great reception), and watched in horror and amazement as the World Trade Center building collapsed to the ground. I was deeply saddened watching all those people jumping from those high stories in the building to their deaths to escape their even worse death of burning. I couldn't believe that someone could hate so much to do something so horrifyingly terrible. I cried along with a few of my other classmates, all of us wishing we were there to help. Hope, fear, sorrow,and still in complete awe! How could a nation so strong, so powerful fall so quickly in one day? On 9/11/01...I had been on summer vacation from college so I decided it was a day to sleep in, no work, no nothing for the whole day. Only my plans had been changed for me. Laying in bed dreaming away my phone rang, it was odd that someone who knew I was on break would call me at 9am.. (thats early for me). I picked up the phone and my friend Russ from Pennsylvania was on the other line. "are you watching tv" he said , I responded "no i'm sleeping is this something important or can i go back to bed?" "turn on the tv" he said.."what channel?" "IT DOESN MATTER TURN IT ON" so i casually turned on the tv...just in time to see the second plane crash into the WTC. I was scared and immediately burst into tears. Wondering how something like this could happen. My friend was interning for Congress..I didnt know where he was..could he have been in the pentagon? The plane that crashed in Pennsylvania was only 3 miles from where Russ lived..is he ok? So many thoughts so many prayers! The rest of that day and for days to come I laid in bed, mourned for those who lost their lives and prayed for EVERYONE in the country. I had so many unanswered questions running through my head. And its funny, I remember that day like it was yesterday. Those planes so vivid in my mind, watching those towers seemingly so indestructable crash down into the ground. There are so many days since then that I still have to take a few moments and cry. It hurts me to think of all those families who were hurt that day, of how vulnerable our country was that day. I was lucky, I no one I knew was directly related to 9/11, yet so many other families had been shattered that day. I picked my brother up from school and the authorities there told me since I wasn't his mother I could not legally take him out. I was so frustrated I snapped and told her to call the police! I wanted my whole family together that day, I didnt want to lose sight of a single one of my brothers and sisters afraid of what could happen. At each passing day since then I still pray for those families, and I will NEVER forget that day. Being 22, this is the first major tragedy that I can remember happening, and it will remain with me forever. With all the political battles goin on, I try not to lose sight of the cause of this war, our troops over there defending our right to freedom and democracy. I only wish that those troops come back safe and truely know that America is grateful for their service...without them where would we be? So I tell everyone remember those who have fallen, their families, the courage all those people had, and thank God that every day we can still wake up and carry out our days. I hadn't talked to him in awhile so it was a nice surprise to get his call. I remembered asking "what's going on?" And he replied "Just watching the craziness unfold here...turn on your tv." I did, and then I hung up the phone. I didn't say goodbye or anything, I guess I was shocked at what I was seeing. A few years back, I was flying into Newark, NJ after a trip to London, and the plane flew over the towers on our approach. They were beautiful. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th is still fresh in my mind like it was yesterday. My friends and I were on our way to psychology when we saw crowds of people standing around the trucks that work around our school. People were talking about the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. My friends and I did not know what was going on until we were in psychology. Our professor told us that there were terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. One girl ran out of the lecture hall crying, and then class was cancelled. We walked to the Johnson Center and saw crowds of people watching TV in the lounge. Many people were crying, and almost everyone was trying to call someone on their cell phones. I started to get scared, and couldn't believe what I was hearing. I decided to skip my math class and go home. On my way home, I listened to the radio, and heard all the news about the collapse of the World Trade Centers, and the fire burning in the Pentagon. My cell phone was not working, so I had no comfort to speak of on the long drive home. A drive that was supposed to be 25 mns ended up lasting 2 hours because of traffic, and many police cars. I finally got through to my mom, who was hysterical and wanted me to come home as soon as possible. Then one of my friends called me to tell me that our math professor was still holding class. This did not seem very important at the time because of the crisis that had just happened. At home, I watched the news all day, waiting to see what else had happened. I felt scared for my safety as well as the safety of my friends and family. I called some of my friends to see if they were okay. That night was a restless night for me. I was afraid for all my friends in the armed forces and began to worry. The aftermath of the attacks was horrible, and I felt hopeless. I went to give blood and donated some food to the people who volunteered in trying to clear up the debris at the Pentagon. Even now, sometimes the event that happened only 6 months ago seems surreal. However, I know that this is an event that will stay imprinted in everyones mind. I just hope that the pain will fade as time goes on, but I know that it will never be forgotten.
