Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The following I wrote around 1 am, Sept. 12 to friends and family in an e-mail. It has a certain "freshness" to it, almost like the smell of blood and fire is still with it, so little editing was done. Still Bleeding Everyone-- Today I did not have classes. I don't have classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, so I decided to sleep in. Around 10:30 I awoke, hearing lots of swearing in my dorm. The guys in my dorm aren't very intelligent, but I felt a certain energy inside that I couldn't understand. So I turned on the TV. Before my face was images I, like you, shall never forget. Quickly I ran to the bathroom to shave and shower myself. I knew I had to be in the newsroom as these tragic events unfolded. After cutting my chin quite badly, I threw on some clothes, put some gel in my hair and ran to the newsroom. The Daily Kent Stater staff was already at work as I entered. The newsroom was crowded with editors, reporters and photographers making phone calls, looking on the Internet, beginning to compile a long day's worth of news. We had calls from all over. A recently graduated newspaper student who works in Washington DC emailed us a very lengthy letter, which was converted into a poignant opinion piece. Our friends and family from the devastated areas poured in information throughout the afternoon. This was a large news event. Though technically I am not a reporter, nor should I report because of my status as an editorial writer, I was assigned to do a local angle to the Associated Press general news article on the attacks. It was my duty to get reactions from local experts (i.e. Kent State professors). Throughout the early afternoon I spoke with professors from the political science, history, business and NATO studies departments. From them I got a wealth of quotations. Unfortunately only a few of the quotations made it into my article, due to space limitations. After speaking to them, I wanted to speak with an expert in domestic or international terrorism. A fellow staff person referred me to a former KSU professor for comment. I had the gentleman's home phone number, so I gave him a call. He refused comment. Though his former coworkers gave me comment, he refused to speculate, then hung up on me. He was not a very happy man. Regardless, I was able to put together my article, which can be found at www.stater.kent.edu. You'll have to do some searching, as this website is constantly updated. But while speaking with political science professors, they told me there would be a university wide meeting at 4 p.m. at the KIVA. (The KIVA is a smaller auditorium in our student center.) At the meeting basic security issues were addressed, with the university president and other officials condemning the actions of the terrorists, but assuring us that we were/are safe. A moment of silence was held at the beginning of the conference. During the meeting a girl, just to the upper right hand side of me, was sobbing. Her head was buried in the side of her friend. Glenn, a Stater photographer, took a picture of her. After the meeting Glenn went to her to get her name for the photo caption. She refused to give it to him. A guy with the crying girl threatened Glenn. As I headed out of the meeting, Glenn grabbed me and explained the situation, and asked if I could try to get her name. Being the daring journalist that I am I went to her, waited for her friends to leave and spoke to her. The girl's name is Allysa. She has family stuck in and around the building struck in New York. Thankfully she had been able to communicate with them through the Internet and found out that they were okay. Allysa was still shaken by the events. With a bit of empathy, I was able to obtain the information from her. Now she is a possible day after story for Thursday's newspaper. The photo that Glenn took will run tomorrow. This has been one of the most trying days as a reporter I have ever had. I have a feeling in terms of magnitude this will be one of the biggest tragedies I will ever cover as a journalist. As I write this letter, it's nearly 1am. I can't sleep. My mind is still spinning with thoughts. The goals of terrorism are actually quite simple: all a terrorist wants to do is disrupt the lives of average people through senseless acts of violence. They want you to be afraid. Whoever the terrorists are, they have been successful. The unending coverage of the events on CNN, ABC, CBS, NBC, and every network is illustrative of their effectiveness. Take a walk across campus or town and glum faces are everywhere. Everyone has been affected. For the moment, the terrorists have seemingly won their battle. However, I believe that we all need to get on with our normal lives. With proceeding forward, we will win the battle. All Americans need to get up, go to work, eat at McDonalds, and basically proceed forward like business as usual. This will be beneficial in so many ways. The dead should be mourned. The United States will strike back with a vengeance never seen before. But we as common people must move forward. We need to heal, and part of healing is moving forward. Reflect tomorrow, but remember that tomorrow is a whole new day. A whole new day of hope. Live life like you never have before. God has blessed all of you with life. Use it well. Love one another. Help eradicate what has brought this tragedy: hate. What amazes me is the American reaction, both good and bad. People are pouring into blood banks to help. Religious leaders are meeting with people trying to give them some kind of answer. Millions of people have poured their support whither it be through a newspaper column (had to pat myself on the back), record blood donations, or through a simple hug to a family member. We are bound tightly together. Our humanity prevails. However I am concerned with the recent price gouging at the gas stations. I am concerned about families running to Tops to stock up on supplies. Neither acts are necessary. Gas prices are rising because so many people are running to the pumps based on rumor. Some believe the Middle Eastern countries will cut back their oil supplies. OPEC has continually promised to keep gas shipments the same. This makes economic sense. Why would they cut supply and hurt their own business? Give this a week, if even, and gas prices will return to normal. The gouging is very, very illegal and won't last. Don't run to Tops to get supplies. This only causes more panic. We'll be fine. Panic is a bad thing. And very importantly, especially to those at places where international persons are living or visiting: DO NOT BLAME THEM. DO NOT FEAR THEM. They are just as scared as we are. They do not need to be scared of us. I cannot emphasize this point enough. American history has many ugly stories where zealous Americans have attacked its foreign population in retribution of international leaders' politics. Remember the Japanese internment camps during World War II. Remember the recent attacks on Arabians storeowners. Many more examples mar the pages of US history. If you hear anyone saying foolish things about foreigners in this country, correct them. This kind of xenophobic sentiment should not be tolerated. Hate does not over come hate. Well, this helped get all of my thoughts on paper (an electronic sort.) I hope you all have a good tomorrow (or today as you read it.) It was 5:30..by the time i got to work because i started at 6:00..the report stated that an object or airplane at hit the world trade center. Now at this time they did not know what kind of plane it was or if this was just an accident. When I got to work and started turning my computers on to start my day that is when someone came up and said the world trade center was hit. There were some people in the company at this time and they had the a tv on..and we started watching it and this was when the the first plane hit. Then that is when we were watching that the second plane came in and hit. I went back to my desk.. went on the internet but the lines were busy and tied up..i went back to the tv and saw the first tower come down that was devasting to me because here we were and said what!!! no way this could be happening. The company at around 9:30-10:30..closed down because at that time there were other planes around and did not know targets...I went home and watch in horror on tv...but this was also the day i ordered my internet service and was talking to the representative down in la area. This is when i heard they were trying to land all the planes..and there were still some planes in the air that they did not know if more hijackers were on board. We come to understand as americans that we value life. As the days went on..my brother at this time was suppose to have a meeting in the world trade center on sept 12th the next day. I think what was going on his mind was if the company rescheduled or if the hijackers waited he could be a victim and even though we feel the loss of the people and our hearts go out to the families it gives us a perspective on life. Now, I have an 'attack' story to pass onto my children and onto their children. I was a sophomore in high school, and when my alarm clock rang on the morning of September 11th, 2001 - I rolled out of bed and turned by TV on like I always do. I then continued to grab my towel and head to the shower, but the horrific images on the screen caught my eye. At first I just though - "Oh, a small plane hit a downtown tower somewhere." Then the shock came as I focused in. I dropped my towel and ran into the living room, where my mom welcomed me with open arms. She held me as we sat on the couch in horror and watched the towers collapse. Needless to say, I didn't go to school that day. Two days later, I woke up dreading the day. My father was shipping out to "Location M" smack dab in the heart of Afghanistan. He is active duty Air Force, and is a proud defender of his country. I held onto my "Daddy" forever, and exchanged "I love you's" until he walked out the door. A million questions ran through my head - was he scared? would he live through this? would i ever see him again? Months after months passed, and my mom and I lived day by day - keeping my father in our prayers. My Dad didn't come back home to us for roughly 9 months. It was, pardon my language.. hell without him. This tragic event has brought my family much closer, and has taught me not to take things for granted. I was to say thankyou to my Dad, and to all of the troops that have served and are still serving in the war against terrorism, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. To you, we owe our lives. Tell us your story: the day started as usual until the boss came to say a plane hit the world trade center. of course we thought it was one of his jokes, but as he pulled a few of us to the tv in his office so we could see, the terror still runs through me even now. as the day procceded we couldn't work too well due to wonder if's. we all knelt in prayer for the families and the whereabouts of our fellow americans. the horror and premeditated plan of such an act caught some of us off guard, in the corner crying for the famlies and our own family members that worked north. my daughter, crystal, worked through the pentagon with a civilian company, and when the plane landed there i called and NO answer. i called her then boyfriend, jeremy, and asked where she was, because he was working as a pipefitter at the dc convention center. he said she was a surviver and she'd be fine. such confidence in his love and my daughter who had the miltary influence as she grew up from her father and i, both coast guard. 6 hours later i recieved the call that she was stuck in traffic and when the plane hit the pentagon she was on the other side of the building. other members of the shipyard had the same predicument. but the ones who did loose a loved one the haeling took a long time. we always think that our country is untouchable because of our techniques and abilities but, look we were caught even if some one knew but couldn't pinpoint. it's hard to believe that we help the world so why do they want to destroy, we all have to adapt to any enviorment and culture. as we listened to pieces to slowly solve this horror act we hope that it or any horrorable act can be dissolved. we still need peace. we can resolve any problem. we teach our kids to solve why can't it continue as adults? we all did leave the playground years ago. Tell us your story: I remember sitting at my desk, we happened to have the television on in our breakroom broadcasting Good Morning America when the first plane hit. I rushed in to see the smoke and devistation to the tower. I immediately ran back to my desk to call my husband. Not getting an answer on his office phone, I called his cell phone. When he answered he explained that he was on a conference call on the other line; he had no idea what was going on. I told him what had happened and while we were on the phone, the second plane hit. Tell us your story: i think im like alot of americans. i had just woken up at 10am and was on my way to the local gas station. i turned on the radio and heard a reporter saying they were evacuating our state capital. the reporter sounded scared. when i got to the gas station i asked the clerk what was going on, and she told me. i went home right after that and turned on the tv. i cried for days. i still cry. today hurts. im way over here in minnesota and its far away, but you see..this is my country. im free to go where i want to go. if i want to go to live in ny i can do that. it was like they tore my heart out. i dont know if that sounds normal or not. i have so many feelings. i dont live my life in fear. i have children to raise. places to go to. but the images hang in my mind..and my tears still come easy. i love my country. i may not agree with everything our government does, but im free to express that. i love that we have freedom. we're still standing though. they didnt topple us. it made us more united. we all get caught up in our own lives..in the day to day. but thats because we have the freedom to have a day to day. i know that if i ever need help, if anything ever happened, i can count on my neighbors. after sept 11, I KNOW i can count on my neighbors for the things that are really important. i dont know if i made sense...but thats what i feel like. Tell us your story: I was siting on the bed watching the today show when the news broke in and said the world trade center is on fire then a min later they said they think it was a plain crash the show went on then they got a live shot of the two towers of the trade center I saw the other plain plying I said to myself don't they see that that plain is flying to low then all of a sudden it flew into the trade center towers and all I could say was O my God, O my God then it was one thing after the other I knew this was bad real bad as the day went on the world seem like anything could happen at any min. and what was next. Next was the pentagon then live shot of a smoking Pentagon everyone look as though they was in a dream and this was not happen. All I could do was get my book and rite a song. My friend was crying and I couldn't believe my eyes upon putting the News on. Being a Native New Yorker and also a Military Spouse I was both horrified for those in my hometown and for my family wondering how this would affect my husband. I will forever have the images in my mind and the pain in my heart but am proud of how our nation had handled matters and even more proud to say that my husband served on Homeland Security at The Pentagon. He was called to duty and responded immediately with so many other without giving it a second thought. I just want to express my profound "THANKS" to all those who wear the Uniform of the United States Army and also want to say that although I was not home in New York, this New Yorker's Heart was there every minute of everyday. When I pick up the phone she started shouting "Turn on your TV!Turn on your TV". I thought that her house was on fire, because in that sunday she had a fire near her house and she almost lost it. I said "calm down, what's happening?", she answered " a comercial plain crashed to TWC". "It's not possible", "there are no commercial flights near the TWC", and immediatly I said "Oh! My god it's a terrorist attack!". My friend replied "No, it was an accident"."I'm watching CNN and I'll call you again in a minute". Well, it looks just an ordinary story compared with the million stories all around the world about the September 11th. But, do you know why was I the first person she called? (Not to her husband that works at an american firm). She called me because I was just arrived from New York where I spend 15 days of honey moon. She thought that I was the person who would understand what was happening. And it's true, I couldn't believe it when I saw the images. I miss New York, and the TWC. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was on Sanibel Island, in Florida. I had picked a very strange time of year to visit Southwest Florida. The summer season had just ended and the winter one had not begun. The Ft Meyers area was very strange, almost like a ghost town. Everything was built up for the tourists and, without them there, stores, restaurants, and the hotel I was staying at- everything was empty. This is very convenient because this time of year is also hurricane season. Tropical Storm soon to be Hurricane Gabrielle was brewing in the Gulf and you could feel the chaotic energy in the air. I was down there on business. The type of work I was doing required that I be up all night so, I had been in bed for only about two hours when my wife called from Norway to tell me she had sold her home- the last hurdle we had to make in order for her to be able to come here to live. It was news I had been anxiously waiting for. However, before I could fully feel the joy, she said, "They are flying airplanes into the World Trade Center!" Between her Norwegian accent and my state of somnolence, I did not quite grasp what she was saying. At first, I thought it was a joke and then just an accident but she told me there had been four crashes and bade me turn on the news, which I did just in time to see the South Tower collapse. I spent the rest of that day in my room entranced before CNN, feeling I was watching some horrible movie and waiting for the end. I watched enthralled long into the night (the operations I was part of had been suspended). The next day I awoke to a very strange world. I did not know anyone around me. My business associate panicked when he heard the airports were closed and took off in his rental car. Everyone I knew and loved was 2000 miles away. I had no one to talk to, no one to help me understand what was happening and how to deal with it, and no one to hold onto. I felt strange and disconnected- like some character in a Twilight Zone episode- as I moved around that ghost town filled with shuffling zombies looking as if they felt the same shock and disbelief that I did. The atmosphere was charged with a strange energy both from the pain and grief and from the storm that bore down upon us. I had to make sense of it. I had to find a place in my mind to put all of this. So I wrote this piece. Thoughts from Sanibel Island I am on a tropical island. As I look across the Gulf, I see the clouds like huge piles of coal rising up into the sky. Ever since I arrived here, I have seen signs, billboards, placards, commercials, and PSA's telling me what to do if a hurricane hits. Is that a hurricane coming? How would I know? That sky looks worse than any thunderstorm I have seen marching across Kansas. The air is hot and heavy. The atmosphere lies across the land like a wet blanket. Three days ago * I * was on a 767. Down here, they call this the "Mean Season" not only because it is the time of hurricanes, but also because the oppressive atmosphere makes people go crazy. Assault, domestic violence, and homicide rates skyrocket. How very appropriate that is this year. It seems that every time I travel to Florida, we end up being in close proximity to President Bush. It is unsettling to know he was here the day I arrived. How will I know if this is a hurricane? How will I know what to do? As I move around the islands they are like ghost towns with just a few souls drifting about. There are signs that tell me that there are normally a lot more people here. Those I do see are old. Of course, it is the middle of the day. The kids are on school and the people my age are all at work. That's it! Or maybe they all know that a storm is coming and they have followed those blue signs that are posted every ten feet. Thus, only me in my ignorance and those who are tired of living remain. Will someone tell me if there is going to be a storm? Should I be afraid? The airport is closed. I may have no choice but to drive or I may be trapped here by the storm. At least the kids are okay. I thought it would be good to get out. When my wife awakened me with the news of the horror (and some great news that seems to have gotten lost in the wind) I clicked on the TV. I sat mesmerized, in shock, and I watched long into the night. The paradise outside could wait. It was storming and I needed to stay safe. Webbie called to tell me that both sides of the road that runs by the American Embassy in Oslo- the very place that was the center of our future's universe, the place where I stood a month ago and said "Something bad is going to happen"- is piled high with flowers, gifts, and expressions of sorrow. Another connection. Yet, I feel so disconnected. I am far away from everyone and everything I know. There are no cornfields here, only the endless expanse of the ocean. There are no elms or oaks but only palm trees that look like they too are waiting for a storm to break and are ready to fight for their lives. Zombies drift about in this pale mirror of the Deep South. How can it rain SO hard with absolutely no warning? One second bright tropical sun and the next a deluge so hard you cannot see the end of your hood. Do hurricanes come like that? One second you are safe and sound, the next the world is ending? Oh my Gods, the Feds are all over down here. They have arrested a bunch of people nearby whom they say trained the murderers who flew the bombs. This is too scary. When it is time to go home, I am driving. I need to in more ways than one. I cannot take the risk that I will get on a plane flown by the one that got away. In a month, my life becomes perfect and I will not risk it now. Plus, I need to reconnect. I need to drive across this country and get a feeling for what is going on at ground level. I need to do this so that I can understand, if I can ever understand. I have to know if the storm is coming. What is it with the President and I and Florida? Why do I feel like I am a part of this, a pawn who is being placed where it has to watch the storm coming yet can do nothing about it? I don't want to be involved. I cannot outrun the storm. My husband was just getting up and I no sooner got the words out of my mouth that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane when the second one hit and it all at once dawned on us that this was not a mistake and and that it was a declaration of war. I wasn't sure of what I wanted to do with my career but on the 11th I knew that my purpose was clear. I have now served in two tours of Operation Enduring Freedom and I'm currently in my first tour of Iraqi Freedom. Anytime I begin to doubt my purpose or loose sight of why I am deployed, I watch clips of that horrible day. No matter how many times I watch it it always brings a tear to my eye. One of my friends had come in and sadi did you hear that a plane hit the World Trade Canter towers. I thought that he was joking or telling me about a movie. When I found out what really happened I was devistated. And I didnt realize until my lunch break that my brother was in New York. So I called my mom and asked if he was okay. Little did I know that he was working across the street from the world trade center on that day. When the towers were collapsing he had to run for his life. And he got out of the island unharmed he was just covered in dust and ash from the towers. I am a true New Yorker, I lived in New York. I was born and raised there for 9 years. I left because my dad is in the military so I left in 1994 and I remember seening the towers when we left. Then I just recently moved to Virginia and I flew to New york to stay with my brother. And as we turned into Laguadia Airport that they were not there. It is really hardfor me to swallow to leave and see them and come back to not see them there.
