I never watch television, but on this sad day for me, I found myself pouring another cup of coffee and bringing it into the bedroom and turning on the TV. Not five minutes later, I watched in horror as the events began to unfold. I cannot explain what this did to me, but I was shaking uncontrollably, crying....not only for my own loss, but to know that now so many others will mourn the loss of their own children and loved ones. It is a pain that no one should have to know. The anniversary of my son's death is now shared by so many in our country. As was my son's death, the deaths on 9/11/01 were senseless and at the hands of others. My heart goes out to each and every person who has lost a loved one. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I did not find out about the attacks until I got to my first period class. No one in my zero hour class had known. I got to my class and everyone in the room next to us was watching TV. I went into our room and no one was there. A few minutes later the teacher walked in, and she asked me what I was doing. I told her I was just sitting and I asked where everyone was. She told me that they were watching the news. I asked her what they were watching and she said, don't you know what happened? No, I said back, I was so confused. Kristen, she said, two planes flew into the world trade center. She brought me into the room next door so I could watch the news with everyone else. We all just sat there and didn't say anything. There was nothing to say. We watched as both collapsed. We had two TVs in the room so we were watching two different channels and got to listen two newscasters. I eventually had to go to my next class in which we took a test and were listening to the news on the radio. Basically all day we listened to the news in our classes. Most teachers didn't teach anything new and many of them knew people that worked at the world trade center so they were really worried. Through out the day, my battery on my cell phone was dead, so I could not call my parents, but I knew that we know people that live in New York. My dad's best friend works across the street from where the trade centers were and luckily he was late to work that day. He got there right after the second plane hit. Other than that, I feel that the attacks didn't affect me as much as they affected people I know. Tell us your story: I was working at a supermarket at the time, in the office, when one of my co-workers came up front and said that a plane had just hit one of the towers. At the time we were all just thinking that it was some kind of freak accident or something. It never occured to any of us that it was the work of terrorists until we heard that a second plane had hit the other tower and then the pentagon as well, then we were all really shaken. You didn't know where the next attack would be and when, or if there would be no more. It was just an unbelievable, unreal event to witness and i hope that it is something this country never has to live through again. I turned on the radio and heard something about planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. I thought it was a huge accident, but I was terribly wrong. After arriving at school, several students were huddled around the television watching in disbelief. About an hour later I watched one tower after the other collapse. It was like watching something in a movie. It just did not look real. The next several hours I was filled with great anxiety and sadness. I went in my room and cried later that evening. I felt a great amount of guilt for what had happened and tried to put myself in the shoes of the victims and their thoughts. Just a few years ago I visited the World Trade Center. After the tragedy I put the picture up on my refrigerator to remember those who were lost. They paid the ultimated price so that we may tighten up the security and safety of our country. I went to my desk quietly and sat down. My teacher Mr.Nuss had turned on CNN. Then as I looked up at the T.V. they anounced that a hi-jacked plane had been run into one of the World Trade Center towers. I was in shock. Then I saw something that had completely shattered me. I saw the second plane hit and the third that hit the pentagon. I couldn't beleave my eyes. I tried to collect my thoughts but I was just to frantic. For the rest of school I could not concentrate at all. I went to my boyfriends house right after school and told him that I was scared. It made say to myself what did we do to the terrorists that made them do such a thing to all of those innocent people? I tossed and turned all night and could not sleep at all. From that day forward I had been forever changed. I wrote this poem today on the 1 year anniversery: America's Day of terror Do you remember, that day in september? The terrorists were jealous of what we had, so they killed all those people and didn't even feel bad. They will pay, for what they did that day. I'll be a proud american and do my part, because each one of those victims have a peice of my heart. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband is a truck driver with a major carrier and we had to deliver a load about 1 1/2 blocks from the WTC. When we heard the "blast" from the plane going into the building, I panicked because my brother worked. I didn't know at the time that he was on vacation, so was unharmed. I, however, was distraught and wanting to go over to the WTC to try finding him, but there was so much chaos and the streets were blocked off. My husband pointed to the buildings and said, "There's another plane and it's going into the building!! My God, My God! What's happening?!" I burst into tears. I could hear all manner of terrifying noises, screams, sirens... I fell to my knees and began praying, asking God to keep my brother and his co-workers safe. In the year that has passed, I have felt relief at my brother's well-being coupled with intense grief for those who lost loved ones, for all the innocent lives that were lost. September 11 is also my husband's birthday and so the day was especially difficult for him. We weren't able to get out of there until after 8 pm. It is a day I will never forget. It haunts me many times, interrupts my sleep and is the subject of many prayers. I am proud that we as a nation have chosen to band together with love, hope and American pride. We are not entirely a selfish people as witnessed by those who given of their time, efforts and energies to assist, comfort and help those directly impacted by this frightening event. I am blessed with greater appreciation for the freedoms we have here in America. My prayers will always be with the victims and their families, friends and surviving co-workers. ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?!?" "two planes just flew into the world trade center and one blew up the pentagon," he says to me with eyes like dinner plates after finishing up on his cell phone. we ran into the guy who had called him and told him in the main student center as we were walking and, as we were walking down to the t.v. lounge downstairs to see it on the news, the guy who'd called and told him said that he had been listening to the radio station DC101, which is in downtown D.C. "the d.j. was talking normally and all of a sudden he yells, 'holy! -...' and there's this long pause and then he comes back on the mic and says, 'oh my god, folks, the ground just shook underneath us and there's black smoke billowing out of the pentagon!' this is crazy as hell, man...never in a million years..." "nah man, you know what?" i said. "this may be crazy as hell, but i'm not surprised. america has made a policy of pissing off any and all countries that it possibly can, even when they go in on (insert corny "bunny ears-like" finger quotation marks here) humanitarian missions. it seems to me that it was just a matter of time before some shit like this went down." angry/confused glares from the other two guys is the only response i got, so i decided to go back to my room. every door on the hall was open and every t.v. was on, with faces glued to it and mouths gaping open for want of something to say, other than, "hooooooly shit, dude. ho-ly shit." "man, i have a class in a few minutes," my roommate said when he noticed that we'd been watching the news in almost complete silence for more than two and a half hours. "i guess i should go and just see if they're still having it." Even though I was born in Miami, i moved up to NY with my family when I was 4 years old and was raised in Westchester County. When I heard about the planes hitting the WTC, I was just about to start my reading lesson. The Assistant Principal came into my room, walkie talkie in hand, and asked me if I was from New York. Then she proceeded to tell me about the planes and by that time, one of the towers had already collapsed. I asked if she could please take over my class, and I walked briskly, heart pounding because I knew of one person who worked in the WTC...my friend's husband. When I saw what was being broadcasted on TV in the main office, I could not believe my eyes. It was like a dream...a bad one. All I could think of "Jack is in there. He's dead." Well, luckily, I found out later, he had made it out. But not without scars. He will always have them emotionally. It was a horrific day and I can only imagine what it must have been like for the survivors and those who never made it out. It is a painful reminder of man's inhumanity to man. Tell us your story: I had just graduated high school in July of 2001; I attended high school in Germany as my dad was in the Army, so terrorist attacks were always a very real possibility. We moved to the states in early September of 2001. The 11th is the day we got our furniture. I was still pretty jet lagged so that morning I was still asleep when the first plane hit. My grandmother in FL called and told my dad what happened, and he came upstairs to wake me up. We had just a small 13 inch TV as our other TVs were still to come. We had the news on and were watching the tower with smoke plumes coming out of the top, when the second plane hit. My mom became hysterical. By then it became apparent this was a deliberate attack and not an accident. The movers arrived, so we told them what was happening and let them come watch with us. I got on my laptop and began writing to all my frineds back in Germany. When we heard about the plane that hit the Pentagon my mom became shaken once again; my dad used to work at the Pentagon. I don't remember much else from that day. I was really confused and that night all I could hear were the military planes flying overhead. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Five years have passed since the tragic day known as 9/11. To many Americans, this day was more horrifying than Pearl Harbor. I guess for many who have expressed that opinion, they were too young to have experienced Pearl Harbor. As I am as well. My story is a bit different than most people's I have heard. But the main thing we have in common, is the effect 9/11 had on all of us. 9/11/2001 - 12:30 PM: I was 24 years old, living with my uncle, and unemployed. At the time I was more interested in partying, drinking, and other wasteful activities, than a career. The rule in my household was, I had to be awake on the week days, at 10am, and no later. I wasn't working, but my uncle thought I was. I told him I was working at a local K-Mart, down the street from us, just to avoid being kicked out. I never got to sleep until 7:30 am that morning. I had a bad sleeping schedule back then. On the day of September 11th, 2001, I woke up at 12:30 PM, hearing the television sound, blasting loud. My bedroom door was wide open, and the first thing I saw was my uncle, and two of our neighbors, talking outside, while the front door was wide open. I thought nothing of it at the time, because I knew I was late getting up, and was afraid of getting yelled at by my uncle. So I quickly ran to the bathroom, brushed my teeth, washed my face, and put on clothes. When I was finished with that, I came into the living room, hearing racket, and what sounded like news reports off CNN. Again I had no idea what had happened. I walked outside, and saw a worried look on both my neighbors and my uncles' face. So I asked my uncle, "Unc what in the hell is going on here? Why is the TV on so loud, and the front door wide open?". He turned to me, and said in a stern and unapologetic tone, "Go watch the TV and you will find out". He looked extremely unsettled, even for a guy who is normally strict and disciplined for his years in the Navy. So I went back into the house, and looked at the TV. I saw something I had dreamt of for many years. My nightmare had come true. The planes crashing into the huge towering skyscrapers. People crying, in horror, everything. I stood there motionless. Speechless. My fears consumed me. And I didn't want to believe those images of the planes crashing into the towers. I was hoping this was another one of my nightmares. But it wasn't. I was awake and it was real. I ran out of the house and cried "Unc tell me this isn't happening. Tell me this isn't real". He replied, "This is real Charlie. We're under attack.". Those words brought me down trembling in horror, because I thought it was a military attack. I thought some unknown country was attacking the United States. Like in my nightmares. My uncle was not good at calming me down really. He just told me not to worry and to head to work. Amazing to me, he went right back to work after that. As if nothing had happened. I stayed inside for hours, watching CNN, gathering as much information as possible. I called everyone I knew, because I was alone, and I didn't want to be alone. I even called up my buddy Steven and cried on his answering machine. Later that evening, my friends gathered everyone we knew, and went to a Denny's. There we all sat, drinking coffee, smoking, and trying to make sense out of this disaster. We all came together to aid one another. Some were more distressed than others. In my head, I just kept remembering my nightmares, and comparing what really happened. It felt like the end of the world for me. I was angry though. I wanted revenge for this. And so I attempted to sign up for the army. Little 5'4" 100 LB me, in the army. Because I felt the people who did this needed to suffer and I wanted to be apart of that. Luckily my friends talked some sense into me, making me realize that even if I did go to sign up, odds are I'd be rejected for my size. 9/11 changed my life, as it did others. I ended up moving into a friends apartment, picking up a job to become independent. 9/11 was my rude awakening. And I woke up big time. Someone got my attention, and made me see the errors of my old ways. The nightmares I had, they are gone now. Sometimes I feel that maybe I had those nightmares for a reason. Like a hint from God. Tell us your story: As we sat around the table enjoying the beautiful September morning in Bloomington, we heard on the news what we believed to be a terrible accident. A large plane had just hit the World Trade Tower. We talked about of the horror that had to be going through the people in the Tower and on the plane. Little did we know what was coming next! Who would have believed that anyone,let alone a group of people, could be filled with so much hate that they would perpetrate such an act on so many innocent people? As we watched, memsmerized by the terrible fire, we were suddenly confronted by the second plane hitting the second Tower. Now we knew! It wasn't an accident! We were seeing scenes that we couldn't leave. We had to watch! Yet we were fervently wishing that it would just go away and that it would not be true. A bit later we saw the Pennsylvania crash and learned of the valor and heroism of the passengers on that plane. They were truly heros. Let us all resolve that all these people will not have died in vain and that we as a nation will be stronger and more unified. Mr. Stephens my art teacher, had turned on the television and then the class heard that the World Trade Center had been hit by two planes. Many of my classmates were astonished. We watched the tragedy on television for several minutes. At 10:00 a.m. the television showed the Pentagon in Washington being struck by a plane also. The sights that my eyes saw on September 11 will be remembered greatly. The thought is that this massacre happened and only because we are hated for being wealthier and more powerful than one country. Many of the people along with myself were shocked by what happened. The World Trade Center was destroyed and the Pentagon experienced unbelievable destruction. The people killed in the destruction of the buildings were a great number. Tragically more than two thousand people, including emergency personnel loss their lives. My life will be changed by this event in many ways. I now know that many of the people now fear that something else will happen. I myself know now that we can be attacked in many ways. People now live in fear every second, minute, and hour thinking that another attack will happen. The people in the United States have been put through a crisis. Tell us your story: I was teaching a reading lesson when Janelle ( the teacher who teaches across the hall from me) came to the door and said that she needed me to come to the door right away. It scared me because she sounded so urgent about it. When I came over she told me that someone had crashed into the World Trade Center and that they thought it might be a terrorist attack. She didn't have a serious look on her face though, so I asked her if she was serious and she assured me that she was. She told me that Ms. Simon (another teacher) had just come and told her,and that she had been crying. Well, Janelle and I both said that we were going to try to get on the Internet and see what we could find out. We each have a computer in our classrooms so that was the best way that we could find out anything. My students wanted to know what was going on. I explained to them that I wasn't sure, but when I knew something for sure, I would tell them. The Internet was flooded with people trying to do the same thing as us, so at first we had no luck. Then I was able to log on to News2Houston.com, a local news station's website. They had pictures of the World Trade Center's on fire, by then the second tower had been hit. At this point I knew it was a terrorist attack because I knew that there was no way that two different planes had accidentally crashed into the World Trade Center buildings. At this point I told my students what I knew and I let them gather around the computer to look at the pictures. It was very hard, but I continued to teach. I did the introductory part of the day's language lesson and started the students on their independent seat work. By this time they had put a TV set in the hallway for the teachers to look at whenever we could sneak away for a minute or two to keep up with what was happening. Then another teacher came to my door and informed me that the World Trade Center had collapsed. She said that it looked just like when they purposely implode a building to build a new one. I came to watch the TV, but they didn't have anything on except News anchors talking. They turned the TV off when it was lunch time to keep the students from seeing what was going on. I was one of only two teachers in the building that told their students what was happening. All of the other teachers thought that the parents should be the ones to tell them. I believe that the students had a right to know what was happening. I know that I wouldn't like it if people were keeping the truth from me. It was the hardest day of teaching in my life. I didn't get to listen to or look at news again until after I got off of work. I so wanted to go home and be with my family and to be able to listen to the news. I have never realized before how important the news is to me. It was awful to be at work knowing that some kind of terrorist attack was going on, but not knowing what else might have been happening. I went to donate blood after work, but they were closed due to an overload of blood donations. That was depressing because I really wanted to feel like I could do something, anything, to help. I also have a son in the Navy and he was getting ready to come home on his first leave in about a year. I wondered how this attack was going to effect him. He was only 18 years old and I worried about him. I cried for all of the victims and their families. It is and was a horrible thing. All of the people that never get to see their parents, husbands, wives, etc. ever again. The children that I have seen on News Specials that would call their parents cell phones just to be able to hear their voices really touched my heart and soul. It has made me cry so many times. I've bought all of the commemorative magazines, the newspaper from the day of the bombing. I admire the way that the friends and families of the victims have handled their grief. I hope that they find a way to memorialize the victims that is beautiful and meaningful. I don't know whether or not they should rebuild the World Trade Center Buildings because I don't know if I would be willing to work in them myself. I'm not opposed to rebuilding them. I want to say to the victim's families: "I am so sorry for your loss and thank you to all of the people who so bravely fought and gave up their lives for someone else. There is NO GREATER LOVE that a person can have. I pray for peace and healing in your families. I pray for your children and want them to know that I love them even though I don't know them. Don't give up! My parents called me from New York after the first plane hit. They told me to turn on the T.V. beacuse they could see it from their kitchen window. I turned it on in time to see the second plane hit. I was very worried about my family, many of whom live in New York. Especially my sister who lives only a mile away from the World Trade Center. I found out all my family was safe but I did know two women who were killed. *Has your life changed because of September 11th, 2001? If so, tell us how. I would say that I am more thankful to be an American and more appreciative of my family and friends. However, it has made me more anxious about the possibility of further terrorist attacks. *What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? I think we need to remember the innocent people who were killed, especially the brave firemen and police officers who walked intho the danger trying to help everyone get out. Tell us your story: I come into school not knowing what happened to the towers. but then my friends start talking about the incident and I ask what they were talking about and they say "a plane crashed into the twin towers." And I was startled because I was there a few months before. But then the teacher turned on the TV, and I figured out that two other planes had crashed. But my techer had to call his perents to know what was going on. Because they live in NY. And he told us that the towers were about to collapse. Then the every class thoughout the day had there TV on and had been watching and talking about the incident. And I saw it on every news channel there was. then I here that all the planes were grounded in less than 2 hours. And I was glad that my dad wasn't on a flight because he travels every week.
