Tell us your story: I got up early that day and left my house before 7:30am because it was an election day, and I needed to go to Home Depot for supplies to finish a project I was working on at home. I got back at 8:50am and was putting things away when the phone rang. I started not to answer so I could finish what I was doing, but for some reason I needed to answer the phone. My brother-in-law Conny was on the line and didn't chit chat as usual. He asked me if I had heard from my husband Reggie, and didn't he work near the World Trade Center. I told him, my husband worked about five blocks from the WTC, and I hadn't heard from Reggie, but why was he asking. He told me to turn on the television. It was as if I was watching a a promo for a new movie release, except there was total chaos and complete pandemonium everywhere. I called my husband immediately, and found out he was alright. He told me what he was watching from his office window, and as we were speaking, the second plane flew past the window hitting the second tower. I told him to get out of there, but he said he would be fine, and besides, there was no place to go. The streets were full of people, debris, the subways had been closed, and there was no bus service. He said he would be alright, and nothing else would probably happen. Then the Pentagon was hit. I called him again and begged him to leave, and I guess just to apease me he said he would leave soon. I then began calling family and friends to make sure they were alright. We had a friend that worked for NYS department of Taxation in the WTC, but I found out his office had been moved. But someone very special to us did work at WTC. Michele worked on the 104th floor of the first tower hit for Cantor Fitzgerald. This was unbelieveable, I had just seen her at church on Saturday. We hoped and prayed that she was late for work that day. I called her mother Winsome, a family friend of more than fifteen years. She was so strong and comforting to me at a time when she needed my strength. Winsome displayed so much faith and courage, and strength that I was embarassed for my inability to comfort to her in her time of need. Over the next several days we called everywhere, watched everything. Winsome and friends went to every hospital where victims had been taken, left fliers everywhere, attended the meetings, but in our heart of hearts we knew she wouldn't be there. We prayed for a miracle as did hundreds of thousands others. We held out for the hope that survivors would be found in all the devastation. Michele was lost to us. Michele who was one of the sweetest, kindest young ladies (27) you would have had the privilege of knowing. She and my children had grown up together, and it was almost as if I had lost one of my own, but I hadn't, and Winsome had. Winsome had suffered another devastating lost five years earlier when she lost her husband Michael to a brain tumor. We did whatever we could to be there for Winsome and Monique (Michele's younger sister), but the enormity of what had happened overwhelmed us all. I was fortunate. My husband eventually came home safely, but we were never to see Michele again. Michele was two weeks from graduating from New York Resturant School where she had been studying to be a chef. She would have left Cantor Fitgerald to start a new life doing what she loved, cooking, but I guess God had another plan. It is said that only the good die young. And on September 11, 2001 so many good people were taken from us, and although we were blessed and fortunate to have known these people there will always be a hole in our hearts, and a void left that can never be filled. I had it maybe 8 months to a year ago. In the dream I remember riding the New York City subways. They were grimy and covered with graffiti. Bums and bag ladies rode along with us. Out in the city, we knew a bomb was coming. It was late afternoon. We were all trying to get out, get away, but didn?t know how. I ended up just walking and walking, until I got to somewhere like Queens. The sun was setting. A bomb came. We watched the sky light up an eerie color. I was worried it was the end of the world. I was so afraid. ? Tuesday, October 16, 2001 It?s been exactly 5 weeks but feels more like 5 days. It?d be a joke to say people are "getting over" September 11. It?s not easy when now we are bombing Afghanistan and someone is mailing powder laced with anthrax to people like Tom Brokaw. The sense of surreal continues. On the news they barely mention the cleanup in New York (4,600 still missing). Instead it?s all about anthrax and the latest hoaxes and on-line polls about whether or not we?re afraid, then maybe a little bit of news about the bombing, which always seems to be the same: we?re "making progress." This is why people are not healing ? the terror continues. It?s almost as if real life is on hold and we?ve just been drafted to run around, react, and put out fires. I am not really afraid. I?m just upset this is happening to our country. Some days all of this seems either horribly bleak or bizarre. Every day I think of the World Trade Center. And the planes. I wonder if there will ever be a day when I don?t? And if I?M like this, I can?t even fathom being a New Yorker, or having lost family or friends. So the peace has not yet come. People are buying gas masks and trying to get their hands on antibiotics. Last night ? I swear ? Tom Brokaw shook a little capsule of pills in his hand at the end of the broadcast. "In Cipro we trust," he said with this eerie grin. He thought it was delightfully ironic or something. I just felt sick. ? Tuesday, October 23, 2001 This afternoon I was reading the "Today in History" section of the paper. On this date in 1983, 241 U.S. soldiers were killed by a suicide bomber in Beirut. Then I think of the present, of 5,200 people dead. 241 used to seem like such a big number. It makes 5,000, as Rudy Guiliani said, feel "unbearable." There are choices ? watch the news and hear the panic or don?t watch and wonder "is anything new going on?" Today they reassured us the President doesn?t have anthrax. Well that?s a relief. Others are dying. What are we going to do, stop getting mail? At church they talk about how God destined each one of us to live in this time. My question is ? why? Because the Little House on the Prarie era is looking mighty attractive right now. It?s not that I doubt God. I know He?s there. I?m just scared He?s mad and not listening. I don?t want the rest of my life to be chaos. To me that sounds utterly depressing. I keep praying for mercy ? for me, for everyone. Please God? Help us to know what the heck we?re supposed to do. I feel afraid of God right now, like He?s mad and letting us try to figure things out, which is of course, hopeless. Then there is this contrast: last night I stayed up to watch the Yankees ? yes, the Yankees ? clinch the American League pennant. If you?d told me that last year, I would?ve shuddered at the thought. But yes, I watched the Yankees beat the Mariners to make it to the World Series. Yankee Stadium was charged. I don?t know if I?ve ever seen it, I don?t know, vibrating like that. As soon as they won, the PA system there cranked up Sinatra. Suddenly, booming out across the field was that familiar intro: Start spreading the news...I?m leaving today, I want to be a part of it...New York, New York. Everyone in the crowd joined in singing at the top of their lungs. Joe Torre went and hugged Mayor Guiliani. The fans kept screaming. A month ago that very stadium had been half-full with people silent or weeping, attending a massive memorial service. Maybe it was that day the animosity I?ve always felt for New York melted away. At least for the most part. So the Yankees won, and as I was falling asleep, I thought of all those ecstatic fans leaving and getting in their cars and seeing the empty skyline and having it all come rushing back. I prayed for them. I prayed for the emptiness that would start to settle, as they came back to the quiet, crawled under the covers, and like me, tried to fall asleep. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember I was on my way to work when it happened. I got to work and turned on the radio as usual to listen to some music. It was shortly after that when they started to announce that the first tower was in flames. shortly after that they told about the next tower being hit and then knew it was a terroist attack. It was a horrible feeling knowing from what I was hearing about that such a thing was happening. I just couldn't visulize what was going on and I couldn't see it either being at a job where there was no television and I wasn't going to get home before 4:00 that day so all i could go by was what i heard on the radio and what customers were telling me. I didn't know anyone there bit that didn't really matter because it still was so disturbing to me it was like a part of me was there and the people were to me like friends and relatives. I still can't understand to this day how anyone could just kill in cold blood like that! I pray that we never have to witness another day like that again! My teacher was talking to another teacher and she said that they hit the first tower.So we went into his room and started to watch the T.V. I was supposed to be making plans for my 27th birthday. I called some friends to make plans for my big day. At 8:45am that all changed. My heart stopped and i couldnt believe what i was seeing. From that moment on september 12th is just another day to me now. I cannot celebrate my birthday Knowing that 3000+ lost their lives for absolutly no reason.Just plain ol' men and women going to work to support there families.I do now have a new found respect for police officers and firefighers.My heartfelt sympathy goes out to all those who lost loveones on that tragic day. When I did, I could not believe my eyes. I am 38 years old and have never seen such a site. My heart just broke. My husband is in the National Guard, and we know that he could be sent out at any time. We have talked of this, and we both feel that wherever our country needs him, then that is where he needs to be. We both support our country and our leader (President Bush). I have cried for all that have perished, those that are left behind to carry on and for the safety of my husband. For all of the people that have lost loved ones, I pray for you. I pray for peace in your hearts. I know that nothing can ever bring back what you have lost. But we as Americans have to pull together for all. God bless America. "I'm Membership Chairman of the PTA and I planned to write PTA membership cards that morning. It's a boring task, so I turned on the television. I was shocked when I saw screen. The first tower had already been hit, and smoke was billowing. I was stunned, and I jumped up and started flipping channels. I listend to numerous excited newscasters explain what was happening, and I couldn't believe it. I started to cry. Then I ran to the telephone and called my husband at work. I was surprised when I talked to him that he already knew, but he hadn't called me. I spent the morning transfixed, actually all day and evening, watching in horror as further disaster unfolded. I kept writing PTA membership cards like a robot. I kept crying on and off. I feared for the future; World War III was on the horizon. I considered picking my daughter up from school. I called my daughter's school and found that it was under lock down. I decided to leave there. All day I noticed jet planes were roaring overhead." Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001? If so, tell me how. "My life personally has not changed significantly. Airline travel is more difficult and cumbersome now. This sprong when my daughter and I flew to a baby shower, we experienced the higher security. We couldn't drop our luggage off curbside; my daughter's school scissors were confiscated. Our bodies were scanned, and we had to sit down to have our shoes scenned. I'm more concerned about being prepared for a disaster now, and I read articles about how to prepare for a biological incident. I put some supplies away, and I've gone to internet sites to read more. I read more about current events and lool for omens of impending war. I fear for my chidren and grandchildren's future. One of my friends is the wife of a SEAL. I listen with new interest to her insights about military congflict. I'm amazed at how she is resigned to the possibility of her husband's death. I worry about my 22 year old son, and whether there will be a military draft again. My husband's import business is affected because container shipping by ocean is slower and more expensive. The stock market has crashed and the World Economy is uncertain. Our investments have lost 15% or more. Q3. What do you think should be remembered about September 11th? The United States is not invulnerable. It's brought home that terrorism is a worldwide problem, and a global war is a real possibility. We need to beef up our security and drastically improve communication between agencies like the CIA, FBI, state and local governments, and immigration. It's made us more aware how insulated and complacent Americans have become. We live in great comfort and have great liberties but don't appreciate it. September 11th has made us more aware of this. September 11th has been a powerful reminder of how fragile human life is and the importance of family and friends. We need to be less concerned about materialistic things and having more belongings. The love of our family and friends is the most important, and we need to make them our highest priority. The events of September 11th have brought many people back to God and made them reevalutate the meaning of life. We need to learn more about other cultures and religions so we are able to be more tolerant of different beliefs. September 11th taught us how ill-informed and close-minded many of us have become. Most importantly, September 11th should remind us all of the amazing power of the human spirit and its resilience. This was an incredible demonstration that herosim lives inside all of us. Q4. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Hav eyour feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? No, we did not fly an American flag at home, but my husband did fly a flag at work. I did purchase a flag window-cling and several small American flags. I saved the two paper flags printed in the newspaper to put up. Our civic league posted a flag at our community's entrance. My feelings haven't really changed but my sense of patriotism is stronger. I've noticed a lot of articles about flag etiquette and read them with interest. I think that everyone feels greater patriotism in the United States. September 11th united the diverse American people and brought us together, united us as citizens of the United States. Tell us your story: My mother (Mrs. Marquetta Hromoko),had just been placed in the Hospice Program due to colon cancer being found for the second time. Eight months prior she had surgery and the doctors said they got it all, and there was no need for chemo; some months after that she began to feel tired all the time, having difficulties with going to the bathroom. She was hospitalized in the early part of June, 2001. She lay for 2 weeks while they tried to find what was wrong. Her blood count was so low, she required 4 or 5 units of blood during her stay. On a CT Scan they saw a shadow in an area much higher than her cancer was the first time. They said not to worry it was too high to be the cancer they removed. They did exploratory surgery and found a tumor this time on a mesantaric artery; they removed what they could and told us that she would have to have aggressive chemo therapy and possibly radation therapy. I stayed with my mom every day at the hospital and usually didn't leave till 11 or 12 midnight when she fell asleep because she was scared. She told me she had a dream every night exactly the same, that she was in a place where it was very dark and she was holding a lit candle and that she was very scared and that a voice ( she assumed was the Lords) told her not to be frightened and to walk down the path, and as she continued she began to see light in the distance and the closer she got she saw what looked like thousands of people (men and women) standing together holding lit candles and the closer she got the brighter the light, but then she would wake up only to have the same dream every night. Only now, do I think I understand the meaning of that dream. I believe those thousands of people would be the souls of those lost on 9-11-01. Now mind you this was is June. My mom went home from the hospital the end of June. This time, my mom didn't bounce back as she usually did. We struggled to get her strong enough to begin the chemo. My moms livingroom is very large so we had a hospital bed for her to stay in. August began the first round of chemo. It made her deathly sick with severe diahrea, mouth soars, bladder infection, vaginal infections,no appetite. Finally she said, when I go back to the doctor I'll ask if I can take a pill. I didn't ride along with my brother and dad that day, I was exhausted from the day to day care she needed, but I was glad I didn't. The doctor told her the tumor was growing rapidly, she was continuing to lose weight and had no strength. He was making arrangements with Hospice, to help with what we now had to face. My mom had just turned 71 and I thought she would outlive me (53). The day they rolled in the oxygen unit, wheelchair, airbed, and box after box of medicine and syringes, is the day I think my mom gave up the fight. The morning of 9-11-01, I came to make mom's breakfast and routinely she watched and listened to a religous channel. My husband called and said turn the TV on CNN. I did that and the first thing I saw was the first tower on fire and as my mom and I watched we saw the second airplane hit the second tower. We looked at each other at the same time for what seemed to be an eternity, neither saying a word; we didn't need to, I think we both thought this was the beginning of the Armageden as it states in the Bible. This was the end of the world as we new it. We have family in Newark, N.J. and Sterling, N.J. We called to make sure family member were OK and they were, thank God, but they knew people who were among the missing and eventhough my mom new she didn't have long to be here, she prayed everyday for those who were lost. My mom taught Sunday School at the Assemply of God Church where she belonged and she served the Lord for too many years to mention. My brother who was a God sent at this time, worked for the Justice Department, and spent many hours at work because of what happened in America and many of these hours he would have liked to have spent with his dying mother. But my mom told him she understood, and that he was doing important work for the Lord too. She prayed for his safety daily too. My mom passed away November 12, 2001, and unless your not a religious person, you won't understand what I'm about to say. At 10:00 p.m. the night before she died there was a knock on dad's door which was unusual for that time of night. My mom's best girlfriend and her daughter said they had a vision that one of me or my dad was holding my mother back from passing on. I screamed and I cried because I couldn't bring myself to tell her it was OK to leave us. As long as I could feel her and touch her and hold her was all I wanted. Mom's friends said you need to tell her its OK and that we'll be OK and see her one day soon. So, I pulled myself together and talked to my mom alone; I told her how much I loved her, and that Dad would be OK, and to plase let the Angels carry you home, and that we will be with you soon. I slept on the couch that night in the room with my mom and in the morning she was burning up with fever. I had to take my husband to the hospital for bloodwork for post-surgery blood thinners he was on; but I called my younger brother to sit with Dad when I left. I was back in about an hour and a hospice nurse was there, she told me your mom only has a few hours left. I called my mom's sister, who is a minister and my mom's best friend; when we noticed mom's breaths becoming labored we gathered in a circle round my mom's bed and held hands and my aunt led us in prayer as my mom left this earth. It wasn't until I saw the Winter Olympic opening ceremony that I remembered my Mom's dreams back in June, 2001, for it began with a child skating with a lit candle and ended with many, many many children carrying those candles and I believe my mother saw her passing and the passing of the thousands who lost their lives on 9-11-01. Even though its been a year the pain has not gotten any better and I struggle each day with out her but I know she promised me that when my turn comes, she'll be there with her outstretched hand waiting for me. I rolled over to turn on the news, wait for the bathroom as one of my housemates had just beaten me to the shower. As I was collecting my thoughts and waiting for the weather report, the local station cut to CBS. There, in a sub-real picture I saw the effects of the 1st airplane slamming into the WTC. I went to wake up my other housemate - he had to see this. At first I thought to myself, "Did the pilot have a heart-attack?" Having flown into NY before I realized that lower Manhatten was quite a bit off the landing path for JFK and LaGuardia as well as take-off patterns. Something is terribly wrong - it's perfect weather there. As various news reporters were transmitting their take, the feed went to a wide shot of the WTC - it was at that time, I watched in horror the second plane slamming into the building. No doubt about it, this was a planned and executed scheme. It was at this point, I could relate to my parents in what they went through when Pearl Harbor was bombed - but this, this was on American soil - happening in the best city on earth. My next thoughts went to my family members who worked in lower Manhatten. One in particular had/has the habit of leaving quite early and getting to his office promptly at 7 AM. After getting to work (what was I thinking!) and dialing my family's phone number for two hours, I finally got through...I got choked up as it was all too quiet on the other end of the line..."It's Stac" I whispered, "please tell me that everyone is accounted for." My cousin let out a sigh of relief - yes, her husband has woken up late and was stuck in the Licoln tunnel for about an hour. My other family member had called at this time on the other line to let me know he was OK as well, having witnessed both planes hitting the WTC as he and his boss drove to their office in LM. Now my phone at work was ringing off the hook...friends, family, colleagues all trying to connect and be assured of everyone's safety. However, one person in our family was not accounted for...my aunt did not know where he was as he had an itinerary of NY (LM), Washington DC and LA. Finally, after 48 hours, we found out that he had switched his filming schedule and went to LA first. The next few days were numb for me. Grateful that my family was safe, but at the same time waiting to hear about friends, clients and acquaintances. I can't say that I was fearful at any point. Crossing the bridges that span the San Francisco Bay held no anxiety for me. But what I did however was cry like I've never cried before. Going to the store, standing in line to pay for groceries, looking at the stranger behind me in line and bursting out crying, holding on to eachother. This still happens to a certain extent. The other thing I noticed about my "reaction" was a more balanced outlook...yes, the people who did this were possessed by evil, yes, it made me sad to see other people in other parts of the world joyful over the recent events. But all in all, a greater dilligence on what is right and what is wrong has impacted my thinking. No longer do I take things for granted on any level. I am grateful that we as a nation have weathered this event so far - I say so far because now my main concern is that we as a country still must uphold those ideals of life, liberty, freedom and happiness to their most pristine state...meaning that we must look from every angle our actions in whatever circumstance. This is what 9/11 has brought out in me, a desire to uphold those ideals that allow people to fulfill their dreams here regardless of any differences. There's more I could write but for now I think this is enough. We are a nation of heros, of cowards, of greed and charity. We are a mixture of the best and worst in the world - it is my hope that we can foster the best, share it with the rest of the world and thus bring us all together in respectful harmony. We were chatting about the usual mundane and happy things that preoccupy our days. Suddenly mother exclaimed...a plane just flew into one of the World Trade Center towers. There was a heavy silence from the phone and then she said the Pentagon has been hit. I just remember forgetting my job and completely reverting my work space computer to a news center. I remember thanking God that my father had cancelled his trip to New York that weekend before. Later that morning, I was asked to attend an awards ceremony for one of my colleagues. She had friends that worked in the Pentagon. She had decided to go ahead and accept the reward because she wanted to remember that there is good amidst this horror. Throughout the ceremony, the University President refrained from his usual wonderful story telling and began focusing on the spirit of life that this ceremony represents. The rest of the day the University was awash with TV sets in classrooms, students crying, people running wildly around holding onto each other and trying to comfort one another. There were angry discussions and incoherence. Since that day, I have had my share of nightmares but mostly there is grief...grief for those who had to jump, those whose lives were ended in incomprehensible terror. Grief that our nation didn't take the foreshadowings seriously. Grief that there is such a horrifying inhumanity. The rage I feel is equally powerful. There is not a day that doesn't go by that I can't fully comprehend the terror, the horror or the pure evil that drove these acts. Within seconds, my friend Lisa called from her cell phone. She was so upset that I could hardly understand her. She told me her husband Jim was at the WTC working that day on 72nd floor! I remember thinking how strange it was for a plane to be flying that low and in the area of the World Trade Center. I was on my way to work from Bryant School in Dubuque, where I just finished my weekly mentoring session with Willie, my mentor child for the last six years. By the time I reached work, the second plane had hit the second tower, and they radio was telling everyone that it was highly possible this was a terrorist act. My first response was total disbelief. How could anyone intentionally fly a plane into a building? How could anyone in their right mind attack the United States like this and think they could get away with it? Total shock was my first response. No one at work could function - we turned on the radio and listened intently. We just couldn't believe what was happening. The phones, which are normally very busy, were quiet. The entire building was quite. TV's were moved into the conference rooms so everyone could see what was happening. I think everyone felt the same way. I went home for lunch and after work and watched what was happening on television. I watched, cried, and talked to my family and friends. I didn't get a lot of sleep that night. In the days that followed, the names of people who died were released and of course there were family members here and in surrounding towns. After several days, I finally quit watching what was happening on television. I just couldn't take any more. In the days since, there are very few days that go by that I don't see or hear something that reminds of me of what happened. But the thing that sticks out the most for me is when President Bush reminded us that the attack was not just on America; there were people from 80 nations represented in the World Trade Center buildings. The attacks were really against humanity. There are those who think the American public will forget what happened. I don't believe anyone could every forget what happened. I've been watching the television programs that are meant to serve as a memorial to those we've lost and observed a moment of silence this morning. I think we should make sure that we honor those who died on this date every year, much the same way we observe December 7th as Pearl Harbor Day. I now know how my parents felt. I couldn't call family and friends because the phones were overloaded. I also have family in New York that I worried about( they were all fine.). I WOKE UP THAT MORNING AND PUT ON THE TV LIKE I DID EVERY OTHER MORNING BUT I WAS SHOCKED TO SEE THE WORLD TRADE UP IN SMOKE AND NOT KNOWING WHAT WAS GOING ON..I YELLED TO MY HUSBAND AND HE DIDN'T KNOW EITHER..WE CALLED PEOPLE WE KNEW TO FIND OUT EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED..I WAS TERRIFIED..I THOUGHT THIS COULD POSSIBLY BE THE END OF THE WORLD AND I FELT SO HELPLESS FOR MY BABIES WHO WERE BORN FOUR DAYS LATER...I EXPRESSED TO MY FAMILY THAT I CARRIED THEM SAFELY AND HEALTHLY FOR NINE MONTHS ONLY TO END MY PREGNANCY THIS WAY..ALSO I WAS WORRIED THAT SOME PEOPLE I USED TO WORK WITH WERE DECEASED..I USED TO WORK AT DEAN WITTER IN FIVE WORLD TRADE ABOUT FIVE YEARS AGO...TILL THIS DAY I STILL GET CHILLS WHEN I SEE ANY PHOTOS OF THAT HORRIBLE DAY.
