My co-workers and I were all devistated to hear of the tragity that was happening. all I could think of was my Little boy who was with his sitter and that I needed to get to him as soon as possible. He was safe but, I just needed to be close to him. For some reason it was more comforting to be able to hold him. I also could not stop thinking about the child I was carrying at the time, who is now a little over four months old. I just kept thinking, how is this going to effect thier future? Hopeing to be able to give them a good life and to help them be good, responsable people all parents want thier children to be. Also wondering if they would ever understand the true meaning of what really happened that day and why,when I don't even really understand it myself. I happened to turn on the tv just as the second plane was about to hit the second tower at the world trade center. I could not believe my eyes at what I was witnessing on tv. All I could think about was all those lives that was lost on that fateful day. I really wanted to go get my children from school and bring them home so I could be with them. I wanted to protect them from all that was happening that day. I felt so sad for all the children that had just lost their parents in the attacks especially the real young ones that will never know their parents. THey have to rely on their parents surviving family members to tell them about their parents. You never really realize how precious your children are to you until a tragedy happens like this. My son and daughter were afraid to leave me for awhile after this happened and I wasn't sure that I wanted to leave them either. It has taken a long time for my children to feel safe again and myself. I will never forget those lives lost on that fateful day one year ago or the ones that died trying to save lives of countless others. I had the T.V. on and heard about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. I thought to myself "what a horrible accident". I thought the plane had malfunctioned or something had happened to the pilot, I couldn't figure it out. Not too long after the first plane, it was announced that a second plane had hit the other tower. I realized this couldn't be an accident, but wasn't letting myself think the worst. After it was announced that a third plane hit the Pentagon, I lost it. I woke up my husband, who works second shift, and started babbling about what was going on. I don't think I even made sense, so he got up to see what was going on. His silence spoke volumes, the look on his face, he finally said "we are being attacked". My first reaction was to go get my daughter from school, if something is going to happen, I want her with us. I just couldn't believe people could be so evil, still can't. My heart goes out to those who lost a loved one that day. I thank God everyone I love is safe, but I hurt for those who can't say that. God Bless America!! At the time I didn't know what the teachers were talking about to each other. When my Best friend came back from gifted and told my friends and I that terriosts hijacked two airplanes with passengers on the plane and crashed them into the Twin Towers. I was scared, confused and upset. I did not want to believe it was true, but it was true. Then a little while after I found out about this horrible news my mom picked my sister and I up from school. I started crying when I saw my mom. My mom said that she is also going to pick my brother up from Revis High School, too. When we came home after picking my brother up from school I put the news on. I can't watch this I told myself and I went to my room thinking about all the scared people trapped in the two buildings and how terrifored their familys felt. I also am very sorry for the firefighters and police officers who died to risk their lives for the people trapped in the buildings. I will always keep these people in my heart as long as I live. Tell us your story: On that morning I had arrived at work at about 8:00 a.m. and everything was fine until about 11:00 a.m. whenever parents started coming in early to pick up their kids earlier than usual. I asked one of the parents what all of the commotion was about and she told me that someone had blown up te world trade center. So after she told us my boss went to her house and got her t.v. and brought it back to work with her so that we could all watch it and see what was going on.So we all watched everyone crying and we watched the firefighters trying to find everyone that was trapped inside if that building that had gotten buried by all of the trash and rubble from the blast.As I was watching all of this on t.v.,i felt so sorry for all of the people who had to go through all of that and for all of their families that did'nt know if their relatives would live or die. As of this moment I am truely glad that I can live to tell this story in the future. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I first remember hearing about the plane crash from a parent I was speaking to on the phone. She said that some plane had hit some building. I didn't think much of it as plane accidents occur all the time. It wasn't until 1 or 2 calls later that a parent mentioned that it was the World Trade Center that had been hit and the second one had just been hit by a plane. I ran out to our lobby and stood watching the TV with many of my collegues - our mouths hung open in horror. We could not believe what we were seeing. As the realization that more planes could possibly be on their way to other buildings I began to get very scared. Living in a major city, and especially the birthplace of democracy I had no trouble in imagining that we might be a target, too. My next thought was of my family. I first called my husband to see if he had heard. He had and he also confirmed my fear - that his father works in the heart of New York City. I then called my parents to see if they were aware. They were watching and were waiting to hear from my brothers. One lives in Baltimore, also a major city, another works for the government near Washington D.C. and the other lives in Connecticut. I figured my brother in Connecticut was safe but I was very worried about the other two. As I spoke to my best friends, and my husband, our thoughts turned our many friends who work in and around the World Trade centers. Many phone calls and emails were sent flying back and forth trying to find confirmation that all were well. I spent the next hour or so frantically trying to reach any of my in-laws and my two brothers. During this time I also had to continue my duty as a nurse and take care of the sick children I am in charge of. I was torn between my duty and my fear. I also waited to hear if our hospital would go on alert to receive any injured children from New York or if they were going to ask for volunteers to go up to New York to help with the relief effort. It wasn't until late that night I finally heard from all of my relatives. Fortunately, neither of my brothers were in an area that was hit and my father-in-law was in another part of the city when the planes hit. Within several days I had heard back from all my friends and knew that they were safe. Only by God's grace were a number of them who were supposed to be in the World Trade Center that morning were on business trips, in meetings elsewhere, or decided to skip their regular breakfast there. In the months after the attacks as the stories of those who died were put into the public, I couldn't help but think "that could have been me; that could have been anyone that I know". It hit hard that all of those people had friends, family, loved ones and were going about their normal lives, never knowing that their lives would end that day. But what stood out the most were the stories of faith. Of how people found God in their hour of need or how God sustained them in the face of certain death. The calm with which they called or sent messages to loved ones telling them that they would not make it but that they loved them blow me away. Or how they sacrificed their lives so that others could escape or find safety. The heros and those that died will always be remembered. And those, like me, who did not lose anyone but were ready to go and do what was needed, who wore pins and colors and hung flags everwhere and showed patriotic pride are all survivors and heros, too. We did what we could, with what we had, to give support to those who were on the front lines. History will look back on September 11, 2001 and remember not only the death of those in the World Trade Center and Pentago but the rebirth of American patriotism and love of country. Tell us your story: I was preparing for my first class of the day when one of the other staff members came running into the teacher's room saying that an airplane accident had occurred at the world trade center. She turned on the television, and we watched in horror as we saw the first airplane hit one of the buildings. Immediately I told the others in the teachers' room that it wasn't an accident and walked upstairs to teach. I felt as if someone had punched me in the stomach. My thoughts jumbled through my head as I struggled to teach. The students quickly saw my distress but I couldn't bring myself to tell them. I vaguely told them that my mind was on lots of things. Approximately 15 minutes later, the principal began to announce the names of students over the loudspeaker and told them to go to the office with their bookbags because they were going home. I, as well as other support teachers, went downstairs and began taking names from parents in the cafeteria because they no longer fit in the office and brought students down. The rest of the time was spent going up and down to get the students. Some parents worked in the WTC or near that area. They were covered in soot and visibly shaken. The younger students couldn't understand what was going on and a few wanted to remain in school. I called my mom who takes care of my 2 young sons and spoke to her. However, I was unable to reach my mother-in-law who used to frequent Century 21 located near the WTC and panic set in. People began calling on their cell phones and were unable to communicate because the system was deluged with phone calls. It wasn't until after 6 p.m. that I was able to breathe easier--my relatives were safe and sound. In school, I went back to my room and talked to one of the other teachers. From that side of the building we had always been able to see the WTC, so we saw the huge black clouds of smoke. Suddenly, my husband, who had been volunteering at the school until he found a job, came in and told us that the building had collapsed. (Once he found a job, he continued to volunteer on his day off.) We looked up in total dismay to see just the cloud of smoke billowing. My cousin was going to work near the WTC collapsed. He related his harrowing experiences and my skin developed goose bumps as I began to cry. Apparently, an older man told him, "Don't go that way....return the way you came." The old man told him "move you need to keep moving. As they both began to move, the old man was now where my cousin was standing. The debris fell on him, and killed him. My cousin described him as his guardian angel because this man, not only told him to move but had said to him "God Bless you my son, you've got to move!" My cousin ended up walking to the Bronx covered in soot and blood. He said that he was so upset that by the time he got to one of the bridges that crosses over from Manhattan to the Bronx he had bought a bottle of liquor. A policeman saw him and didn't say anything because he realized where my cousin had come from. For a long time after September 11th, I spent sleepless nights and cried. At school, I had to remain composed and maintain normalcy for my students. At home, however, watching the coverage became too difficult. Gradually, the sadness has lessened and the fears diminished but it hasn't completely disappeared. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember walking out of Chemistry at about 10 am and my friend Amanda telling me that the Pentagon got bombed. I didn't really believe her and did not know how serious the situation was. Then I walked to my Spanish class and we all sat in horror as we saw what was happening. I was so shocked and scared. The first thing that came to mind was "I hope the people who did this don't claim to be Muslim" because I am Muslim. I remember when the Oklahoma City bombing happened everyone blamed Muslims and so many hate crimes happened towards Muslims when in fact a White Christian from Michigan was the one behind the bombing. I didn't want to see how bad things would get if the attacks were by a person claiming to be Muslim, and i say claiming because anyone who would do something like this is in no way a Muslim. As I watched the TV they showed someone jumping out of the window. I had to try really hard not to cry. it was all so devistating and depressing. For the next 2 class hours all we did was watch the news in complete silence. The hallways were very quiet. I remember hearing a group of senior boys asking eachother who there was 18 because they were all worried about being drafted. I remember I had to stay after school for an hour for some activity. When i came home there were 5 messages on the answering machine. All of them were from my parents. They were really worried and kept calling to see where i was and to call them immediately. I called my dad first and he was so serious and quiet. He asked what took me so long to get home and if i was okay. I told him i was fine and was shocked to hear what he said next. He told me that i shouldn't leave the house unless i absolutely had to. I didn't completely understand why- I hadn't done anything wrong, but he told me how right now there was a lot of animosity towards muslims. At work people had been giving him dirty looks when he walked by and then they would start whispering about him. My dad was extremely worried about my older sister Anika who wears hijab (covers her hair with a scarf) and was currently at Michigan State University. THe hijab was just screaming "Hi, I'm a Muslim" and that wasn't something you wanted to be screaming at that time. I kept calling Anika on her cell phone to tell her that dad wanted her to keep a low profile and to come home as soon as possible. I couldn't believe all this was happening. At home all i did was watch the news. I became very angry when the US starting bombing Afghanistan. To me it seemed that the US was just looking for someone to blame and punish to comfort the American people. The people of Afghanistan had done nothing. Only a little organization in Afghnistan was believed to have done something. I couldn't understand how after so many innocent live had been taken in the US, the US could just go and take some more from Afghanistan. That night my family got a phone call from a family friend telling us that the house of a muslim family we know got shot at. I couldn't believe this. I had grown up with a daughter from this family and was so terrified for her. It turned out that some people drove by our Mosque and shot at it. Missing the mosque, the bullet hit my friends house which is right by the mosque. my friends dad was laying on his bed and the bullet flew right over his face. September 11 filled me mainly with with three emotions: hate, anger, greif. I hated the people who caused all this, i was angry that i could feel scared to go to school in a country that i was born and raised in and i was greiving for all the people who died and their family. When I answered the phone Debbie cried out for me to start praying for the people and our country, she said that we had been attacked and that we had to get before God and we didn't have time to waste that peoples life's depended upon it. I turned the television on, and what I saw made me cry. I called my grandson into the living room and ask him to pray with me. We prayed for peoples life's and for the families that were losing there love one's and then we prayed for our President. I cried and prayed the rest of the day, and am still crying for those who lost family. I know how it feels to lose someone suddenly and through the hands of someone else. This Sept.11,2002 I watched a special on television showing all the babies born to those who had died that day. It was another night of crying, but there was a difference this time, I watched God's rewards for He said the fruit of the womb was His reward. The theif slipped by and stole from us, but thank God for His rewards and giving us new life. Sept.11,2001 happening brought about something I thought I would never see. Members of our government stood on government steps and sang "GOD BLESS AMERICA". I thank God for President Bush and for having a God believing President and one who knew how to pray and to turn to God for divine wisdom. I pray that he will continue to do so. I remember being a bit upset with her because I still had 30 minutes of sleep left until I had to get up and get ready for work. She said I should get up and watch the news before I got ready for work. I couldn't believe what I saw on the television. The towers in New York were on fire. I asked my mom what happened and she told me that some people had flown planes into the towers. We heard that a plane hit the Pentagon. We watched the first tower fall. I cried. I cried when my mom left for work. I just wanted to melt into the couch and not leave the house. I didn't want to go to work. And then the second tower fell. And United 93 went down in Pennsylvania. I was in complete shock. How does something like this happen in my country? This is the kind of thing I expected to see happen in the middle east, making the evening news. This didn't happen in my country. I really didn't want to go to work. I don't think I came out of shock until the phone rang again. I worked at the Disneyland Resort at the time. It was my area lead calling to tell me that I didn't have to come in to work because the park would not be opening that day. I knew that if Disneyland wasn't opening, it was a big thing. As you all should know by now, I was able to narrowly escape the tragedy that unfolded before my eyes at the World Trade Center this past Tuesday. This has been my first opportunity to check my e-mail since the disaster happened and I am touched that so many people were concerned about my safety and wellbeing. Fortunately, many in the family did not know at the time that I was doing an internship in the World Trade Center; this proved to be a blessing as I'm sure more would have been concerned had they known that I was working directly at ground zero that day. I normally attended my internship at the World Trade Center on Wedensdays and Fridays. However, this Tuesday my boss asked me to come in for 9 a.m. to do some work as I had asked for the rest of the week off in order to go to D.C. to take the written section of the Foreign Service Exam. On Tuesday morning I initially got on the wrong train into Manhattan and because of this I was about 15 minutes behind schedule as I arrived at the subway stop for the World Trade Center - almost exactly at 9 am. As I climbed out of the subway I noticed everyone craning there necks upwards and as I looked up I saw the side of the North Tower on fire. Unbeknownst to me at the time, this was only a few minutes after the first American flight had crashed into the North Tower. (For those of you who know New York City, at this point I was standing on the corner of Fulton and Broadway, only two blocks from the World Trade Center.) At first I had no idea what had happened. Then a few bystanders explained that a 'small' plane had hit the building. I didn't believe them because I didn't think it was possible. No one is supposed to fly even near those buildings. As I watched the fire got worse. Sirens wailed and yet I wondered how the firecrews could possibly get up that high to do anything. The fire began to spread more and more quickly and I soon realized that this would be catastrophic. Parts of the building started to fall off and then the worst thing I have ever seen in my entire life, people jumping, one by one, you could seem them clearly, dressed in their business suits, falling and jumping from so high up, flailing their arms, clearly still alive, yet falling, it seemed almost like they were floating because they were so high up and it took them so long to fall. Everyone on the street felt so helpless but there was nothing that we could do. I saw at least 20 people jump. Then suddenly, an unbelievable explosion that shook the street and everything around us. I was looking right at the North and South Towers when it happened. The United plane came from a northernly direction but we were standing to the southeast of the Towers, and so we didn't see the plane coming at all; from our vantage point it came from directly behind the South Tower. Suddenly the plane impacted; we had heard no warning, no sound of jet engines, nothing. I don't know if this was because of other noise going on around us or due to some other as yet unexplained reason, but the fact of the matter is we had no warning. As soon as the plane hit there was an explosion like nothing I have ever seen and we all took off running. It was complete chaos. I was worried about flying shrapnel or other debris landing on me. There was complete chaos as everyone ran northwards past City Hall. At this point I believed that it was a bomb that had just exploded and I was concerned about possible chemical or biological agents in the air. As I was frantically running, out of sheer coincidence I saw a friend of mine who also works in the World Trade Center. She was running hysterically and I grabbed her and we both ran into a building to try to look for shelter and a phone. No cellular phones were working anywhere in the city at this point and everyone was frantically trying to get in touch with family or friends. I managed to get one quick call through to my grandparents house in St.Croix to let them know that I was okay. That was the only call that I could make. My friend and I then went outside and we saw thousands of people streaming across the Brooklyn Bridge into Brooklyn from Manhattan. I thought that there were too many people on the bridge and that if there had been a bomb placed in the World Trade Center then surely there might be one on the Brooklyn Bridge. I decided that I would not cross. I repeatedly tried dialing different numbers on my friend's cell phone but none of the calls would go through. Suddenly, I got through to my friend in Miami and he told me what I couldn't believe: that it had been planes that had been flown into the World Trade Center. This is all he could tell me before the call got disconnected. The friend that I had been with all this time, who I had literally run into while fleeing the carnage a few minutes before, decided that she would try to get uptown to look for some people that she knew. She left and I walked northwards and then westwards, all the while watching the twin towers and wondering if it would even be possible to put the fires out. I got near the West Side Highway and continued to watch along with hundreds of other onlookers. I asked a guy next to me if he knew what exactly had happened. He left for a few minutes, somehow managed to make a call, and then came back to me and whispered, "they just attacked the Pentagon." I asked in disbelief, "What??!!" He repeated himself and then added, "No one knows yet and don't tell them, they'll panic even more." As I stood there in disbelief the fire began to reach it's apex and I saw three more people jump from the upper stories. Then, the sight that no one could ever imagine, what I still can't believe, the South Tower crashing down right before my eyes. Panic again as everyone rushed further uptown, everyone desperately trying to find a way out of Manhattan, but the bridges clogged, subways shut down, and buses not functioning. I ran uptown a few more blocks to what I felt was a safe distance and then headed eastwards, again parallel to the Towers yet now a much safer distance away, perhaps 10 blocks or so north. I knew Tower 2 had just collapsed and I could see that the upper half of Tower 1 was almost completely engulfed in flames, but I never thought that it too would fall. And then it did, just toppling over on top of itself. It was the final unbelievable culmination of an utterly unreal day. I didn't know where to go and I wandered around for some time, the streets filled with desperate people, all distraught and dazed in disbelief. Then I stepped inside a nearby bar and found that it was packed even though it was not yet even 11 in the morning. Everyone, people from every part of the city and every profession, were glued to the news aghast at what they were seeing. Drinks were flying off the shelves as people struggled to find something to soften the harsh realization that this was real, this had happened, this was not a movie, and there was no rewinding the footage and starting over. I appreciate the concern that all of you had and I'm grateful that none of you were in New York City and near the disaster. As he kissed me goodbye at his station, I thought how lucky I am, I love him so much. I remember praying that everyone in that subway car should have a wonderful day. I was so happy. It was a beautiful day. I always have my camera with me, amatuer photographer and I wanted to take picture on Lispenard Street. When I got out of the subway on Canal Street I heard this loud noise, but thought nothing of it. I'm a typical New Yorker. When I got to the corner, people were running to stand there. I asked this young man what had happened and he turned to me with these large eyes and said in disbelief that a plane had crashed into the Twin Towers. I started shooting. I ran to the next corner and starting shooting again, as I looked through my view finder, the second tower exploded. We were north of the buildings and didn't know it was the second plane. I knew I had to call my husband. I found a payphone and I told him I would call him when I got to my office (about 6 blocks from the Trade Center). Once I hung up, I started photographing the people around me. One man said to me that this was no accident. Two co workers approached me and said that our building (388 Greenwich Street) had been evacuated. We started to make our way uptown and I tried several payphones without success to reach my husband again. We walked to my co-workers apartment on Bleecker street where I called my mom and sister. Back out on the street I started to walk uptown on 6th Avenue. A woman bus driver on 14th Street was screaming to everyone to get on her bus. We all climbed on and she barreled up 6th. We stopped once at 23rd street to block traffic to let another bus load passengers. A Coca Cola truck stopped to pick up a young lady in a suit with a briefcase and no shoes. They just lifted her up and put her in the truck. We were on 23rd street. Then the first tower fell. Everyone started screaming and crying. I never felt so vunerable. I don't remember the rest of the bus ride to 46 Street but I do remember passengers sharing cell phone (they didn't work), passing out tissues and consoling each other. When I got to my husband building, the US Trust Building on 47th Street, I could barely speak. I made the security guard Tom,. call him to tell him I was on my way up. When I reached him, I jsut started crying. Once I calmed down, I started calling everyone I knew to let them know we were safe and to see if they were. We walked uptown to our apartment on 83 Street and York Avenue many hours later. We walked through Central Park, passed the sail boat pond where there were children playing and ducks swimming. It was as if nothing happened. The city was deathly quite except for the sound of the fighter jets flying above our heads. All of my family and friends are safe. I thank God everyday. Be well. Tell us your story: I had awakened and turned on the television, while preparing to leave for work in San Jose, and already, one plane had just hit the first World Trade Center. I thought to myself 'What a horrible tragic accident!' As I was commuting on my train to San Jose, I was paged, and I knew that it was from my mother, probably wanting to let me know about the plane hitting the WTC. I returned her call once I got into my office. And she asked if I had heard, and I said, yes, it's terrible. She then stunned me with the news that both towers were down. I could't comprehend what she was saying. A second plane had slammed into the other tower,she said. I just still could not understand. I even said, that's impossible! How could those towers come down?! She kept repeating this a few times, til I realized the World Trade Centers were actually gone... Afterward, I came out to discuss this with some of my coworkers, who had heard all of this already. I was shocked, and then remarked, what about the San Jose Airport, our building was directly under the final approach to the airport. You could look up and practically touch the planes approaching the runway. Of course, they then told me that all planes had been grounded in the United States. It then hit me, that this was a major event occurring in our lives. My job at the time was as a customer service representative for a major utility company and I was working at its call center in San Jose, the calls just stopped coming in. Our customers' lives had also come to a standstill. Periodically, I would enter the break room and quietly watched the TV and all the unfolding horrors. There then a company announcement to all of us that the FAA reported that one more jet airliner was making it's way to the San Jose Airport and to assure us that all safety precautions were being taken; that this plane was being escorted by our Air Force. It was approaching in 20 minutes and that to be aware the situation was under control. I had emailed a few co workers in other cities in Northern California, and we basically formed a comfort zone with our emails to each other. It helped us through a very long sad workday. My trip home on the train, was one of much reflection, heartbroken, and sad. Saying prayers to help those who were in desperate need of it, I just wanted to go home, be with my family and wonder how in the world, when the sun rose again, were we to carry on... I went to work and heard the news first at the hospital while I was on the way to the clinic. Details were very fuzzy....but by the time I reached the clinic nearby, the second plane was hitting the WTC. I felt an overwhelming sense to be with my children, even though we were miles away from the attacks. I couldn't believe the creuely and inhumane acts perpetrated by the terrorists in the name of religion. What a lame excuse! We went to my parents that evening and had a very quiet solemn celebration while trying to peace all that madness together. It changed the way we view our lives. I had always felt that life was precious but since that date, I understood how transient things can be. My daughters were 7 years old. Tell us your story: September 11,2001 started out just like any normal day to everyone in the medical records department of Toccoa Clinic in my hometown of Toccoa, Georgia. I remember I walked into the records room not expecting anything unusual to happen. We had a small boombox radio sitting on a shelf above the counter. I had just come back from one of the other departments, and when I walked in my entire department was gathered around that small boombox. I asked them what was going on. One of them said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I was astonished, but the thought of it being a terroristic act didn't cross my mind. I just thought it was probably an accident. Maybe the pilot had passed out or something. Anything could have caused that. When the second plane hit, we knew this was no accident. Then we heard about the plane hitting the Pentagon. Complete fear and silence overwhelmed our entire department. We went across the hall into our breakroom, which had a tiny black and white fuzzy television. There were about 20 of us gathered around that small television. Our work just came to a halt. One lady who worked with me almost had a panic attack when the rumor came that they were about to bomb the entire city of Washington D.C. Her sister was employed there, so she ran out to go home to be with her family. Luckily, our American heroes stopped them just in time. Another girl in our department had a fit also when they closed down the entire city of Atlanta, because her newlywed husband was working on a building in Atlanta. I remember all day long, on tv, they showed the planes crashing into the towers over and over again. All I could think of was how many lives were lost, how many unsuspecting people on a normal business day lost their lives just by going to work. Today, I'm constantly reminded of the heroes of 9/11, the policemen, the brave employees who lost their lives getting other coworkers out of the building, and of the firefighters. My husband is a volunteer firefighter and I pray everyday that he will never get a call that will take his life. Being a newlywed and an expectant mother, my heart especially goes out to those women who were pregnant and who had their babies without the father present. My heart goes out to everyone who lost a mother, a father, a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, or a friend. 9/11 is a day we will never forget, and it will always be in our minds and our hearts 10, 15, and even 100 years from now. It will be in our children's history books. Just as I asked my great grandmother what she remembers about the sinking of the Titanic, I know the day will come when my grandchildren will ask me of my memories of 9/11. I will be anxious to tell them that it was the one day and the one event that brought a nation that was slowly being torn apart together. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My principal Sue, hardly ever interrupts our class by knocking on the door. So, on the morning of September 11th while I was teaching religion class in my second grade classroom, I was surprised to see Sue at the door to my classroom. She asked me to come out into the hallway. I automatically began to think to myself, "Which parent is upset and why, or did something happen to my family?" All kinds of things were going through my head. I told my second graders to read the next page quietly to themselves, and went out to talk to Sue. She told me that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center in New York City. I thought it must have been a small plane that had somehow got off course and had an accident. Sue told me that it was actually a passenger plane and many people were dead. But we both believed that it was just an accident. At the time, the second plane hadn't hit the other building yet. Images flashed through my mind of when I had visited New York just a few years before for a teacher's conference, and one of our stops was the World Trade Center. I searched my mind for the faces that I had seen working in those buildings and wondered if they were OK. Sue told me not to tell the children yet until we had more information. I went back in the classroom where we said a Hail Mary as a class and went back to work. After dropping the kids off at art about an hour later, I went up to the teacher's lounge to watch the TV that a teacher's aide had brought in. We now knew that our country was under attack. I sat there in shock. Many people were crying and worried about people they knew who were flying that day. We all were thinking about what to tell the students. Parents were calling in and somewhat in a panic. We agreed as a staff that it would be best if we would proceed through the day as normally as we could, and at 1:00 our other principal Greg, would come on the intercom and let our students know what had happened in our country. We would then pray the Rosary together as a school. It was a powerful time. My own students really did not understand what was happening. Two of them did have parents who were on business in New York City. I had them call home to make sure that everything was OK. Because this wasn't happening directly to them here in Kansas City, it was difficult for them to comprehend. One year later, we are doing several activities in the classrooms designed to honor the true heroes in our country and to celebrate how fortunate we are to live in such a wonderful country. I still think about the people who had to endure the terror firsthand on that day. My faith has grown stronger since this tragedy happened. I hope that as Americans we may remember what it takes to be true heroes in this world for the short time that we live here. I was wearing a black and purple shirt that said Rebel on the front, and some blue flares. I was trying to figure out the math problem on the board, when I saw my history teacher walk in, whispering into my math teacher's ear. She just turned pale, and told us, and I started to cry. I cried because my sister and cousins and brother-in-law and aunts and uncles live in New York, and I didn't know where they were so I was freaked out. They were all okay though. Tell us your story: We received a phone call just before 7:00am from (of all people) my ex-husband...He said "Have you heard...a plane has gone into one of the Twin Towers in New York..." How do you believe something like that!!! We got around and watched the television...Our 12 year old son stood next to me and asked very solemnly..."You know what this means..." Then he very accurately explained what was happening and what would happen next. He then said "Mom this is OUR Pearl Harbor...Now we know how they felt." Then he hugged me and left for school...I didnt want to let him go!! My husband also gave me his love and went off to work. My ex-husband called back and asked if our two boys could stay home with him..It was his birthday..he didnt want to let them go either. I then went and held our 2 year old daughter and prayed for the future and for those hurt, injured and now missing their loved ones..I dtill do this every day..I Love our country..With all of its flawa, I love it!!!
