He said something to the effect that there was a code blue. My teacher turned on the TV set and all we saw was the pentagon burning up in flames. Most of the people in my class started crying. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Tuesday was a beautiful morning. It was crisp and cool in my little orchard town in the Commonwealth. I was in second period gym class and we were playing field hockey on the upper field on our campus. I was the goalie for my team and suddenly I was stung by a yellow jacket. I rushed over to my teacher and told her that I had to go to the nurse, because I may have an allergic reaction to the sting. As I walked through the building, things were normal. About five minutes after I entered the nurse's office, the familiar voice of my principal came over the loud-speaker. I couldn't really hear what he was saying because the nurse's intercom was broken. We, in the office thought it had something to do with an airplane and the WTC. Immediately my thoughts panned back to images of that small Cesna that crashed into the White House lawn. A friend and I walked to the main office to inquire what had happened and we were stunned to hear that two jetliners had crashed into each of the WTC towers. My heart sank and I felt very ill and cold. My next class an English class which I shared with seven other seniors. My school building had just been built the last year and so some details had not been completed. One of those little details happened to be setting up the television network to the televisions that had been placed in every room. Needless to say, we had no means of watching the news coverage of the horrific event save a small five inch black and white tv which my teacher kept in her closet. For the next hour my classmates and I sat, our eyes glued to the minute screen and tried to comprehend the smoke, fire, dust, and destruction. Administrators, students, and teachers learned about our tv and soon crowded around it with us. We learned about the Pentagon and about a possible fourth hijack and were horrified as we found that Flight 93 had crashed in our own state. I'll never forget how each one of us in that small classroom had a name of someone they knew that worked in the WTC district or Pentagon, or just friends who lived in Manhattan. We watched as reports of possible car bombs outside the State Department drove our student teacher into a frenzy of panic. Her boyfriend was an intern for the Department of State. It was the sense of not knowing that made the moment horrific. So many questions arose. "Who were the culprits?" "How many were dead?" "Where was the President?" "Were there other targets?" "Who is Osama bin Laden?" (For some, his name meant nothing on September 10, but would soon become common in the English vocabulary.) "Are we safe here?" And the most frightening question, the one that no one could answer: "What happens now?" I remember dashing out emails for my classmates and anyone else who wanted to know the whereabouts of their family and friends. The school's network was flooded and it was very difficult to send messages and move from page to page, but I became the designated news director and kept tabs on about five different webpages. I can still recall the lump in my throat and the diminishing contents of the tissue box sitting nearby. I spent my time while waiting for pages to download by watching the terrifying televised scenes. Before that morning they had only been common to memories of Pearl Harbor and movies like Independence Day. As tears clouded my vision and sobs shook my body, I thought of how much I loved this country. How much I respected the men and women who would fight for it. I thought of the brave souls who ran into the burning hell that terrorists had made for us. I thought about a thousand things in that hour. And I knew in that single moment as Tower One fell in slow motion to her iminent death that I would never love this nation any less than I did in that instant. A team is as strong as its weakest player, and on the morning of September Eleventh, members of the American team became equal and strong and resolute. We will never weaken despite many things that make us doubt our country and our government, ourselves and each other. We are all that each other has, and on a beatiful morning in September, we came to realize just how much really have. Some fanatic, amoral group has committed mass murder in Lower Manhattan and Northern Virginia. At first we all wanted to know "why?" Now we need to answer "what next?" We know very little about the people who hijacked the planes that became guided missiles directed at our high-profile economic and military establishments and at our national pride. But we can be certain that anyone willing to give up their own life while committing such a crime must have been reckless to a degree few of us can imagine. This is at the heart of the elusiveness of the terrorist threat: not only is the enemy without country and with cooperators dispersed throughout the world, but also they are animated by a reckless outlook that makes them effectively impervious to danger. Recklessness has a power that sheer military power cannot easily conquer. We learned that lesson in Vietnam when American use of staggering firepower could not stop the Vietcong. An elusive, low-tech enemy, especially if highly motivated ideologically can easily slip below radar and inflict terrible wounds, even when not making steps toward military conquest in the conventional sense. If the United States were to use massive military might against the current terrorist threats, the cure would be worse than the disease. Surely, many civilians would be killed; it would not be easy to kill the real enemies; and the next images of destruction would show America as the aggressor on a par in many minds with the terrorists. Worse even than all these moral and political problems, the tactic would be a military failure, because it would encourage still more recklessness. If thousands are killed in various Middle Eastern countries, what would it do to stop a few dozen morally deranged, fanatic hijackers with knives or some other weapon from taking down the Sears tower, the Golden Gate Bridge, or Cinderella's Castle? Although to most Americans these dastardly deeds were a strike out of the blue, to citizens of the Middle East, they are a much more high profile version of daily life. There has been colonial occupation, dictatorship, protracted war, refugee flight, and terrorist fear for generations-often with American support. Indeed, the long-standing Arab-Israeli conflict is at the ideological ground zero motivating these terrorist fanatics. US efforts both to take firm sides and to broker peace have made few strides toward peace, especially toward lessening the cancer of terrorism that infects the Middle East, especially Israel. The enormity of last week's event presents an unprecedented opportunity to break through that deadlock. With the moral authority that comes from being badly bloodied, the US can turn from serving as the helpful broker to being the insistent heavy, demanding settlement that will resolve the impasse. President Bush is fond of using the image of political capital. We now have a rare, precious, and short-lasting outpouring of world emotional capital for doing something dramatic to root out the motivating source of this fanaticism. In this climate, it can even be a no-fault settlement. Without blaming either side, the US with almost every other nation can insist on coming to terms that will pull out the rug from future attempts to recruit suicide pilots. The US can go still further to squeeze some good from all these evil events. Much more effective than massive retaliation would be a massive world court. Now that this horrible deed has focused world attention, an unprecedented worldwide alliance can work together to hunt down these criminals and bring them to justice. Making war on fanatics will simply make them more fanatical. But presenting them in public trial will embarrass them and anyone else who would be tempted to join them. There should be a world court, with prosecutors from many nations, lurid images of their crimes, and publicity bigger than for the Olympics. Better yet, set the court in the Middle East, to make clear that the source of this fanaticism is to be recognized and corrected. If going to court seems like a slight act for such an enormous crime, remember the way the presidential election was settled. For all the follies that came with the post-election election, at least it was a shift in power that came without bloodshed. This is a war for the "hearts and minds" of world citizens, especially for those who might contemplate doing something like this again. This phrase was coined during the Vietnam, when we hypocritically combined it with huge military destruction. This time, we need to kill the terror with humiliation, not more bloodshed to make it really work and help us reestablish our national security on solid ground. Tell us your story: The first time I heard about the plane crashes on the World Trade Centers was during my third period class at Washington Irving Middle School. I was sitting in civics class with all of my other classmates (I think we were taking notes at the time) when a teacher from the hallway ran in and told us to turn on the television to any local news channel. Our attention quickly turned to the TV as my teacher, Mrs. Gardella turned it on. The first image we all saw was the first tower completely engulfed with flames, and then the news channel played a replay of the plane actually crashing into the building. The classroom was completely silent. I don?t think we all knew if it was real at first; it sure seemed like a joke. I believe the first words that came out of my mouth was ?What?! What?s going on?!? I was a bit confused. Then I realized that they were indeed the Twin Towers in New York; the same towers I?ve seen over and over when we drove by them going up north for various soccer tournaments and trips. When they showed the replay of the huge plane hitting the tower, the room was full of gasps. Nobody could believe it. Could this really be happening to the United States? Before we knew it, they turned the attention over to the Pentagon in Washington DC. They didn?t show the plane hitting the Pentagon, but we saw the live broadcasting of all of the flames and ash rising from the building. Almost immediately, kids in my class began crying with their hands over their mouth in disbelief. I then realized that a lot of the students in this area have families that work in the government; many of them had parents working in the Pentagon. One girl actually got up and ran to the phone that was behind my teacher?s desk. Her dad works at the Pentagon and so she called her mom to see if she knew any instant details. The news channel played the same video over and over again of the plane hitting the towers. She actually turned off the TV which really made me angry. We were forced to stay in the classroom until the principal came on the announcements and told us what to do next. Nobody could stay calm for the rest of the day. I myself wasn?t directly effected by it, but I knew a lot of kids that had family members that worked in the Pentagon or nearby. I couldn?t stand not knowing specific details about the attack; why it happened, was it by accident, and who was behind it. I was very surprised that they kept us in school until regular time. Actually, it made me very furious. Many of these kids needed comfort from their families, and school was not the place to provide such comfort. I didn?t learn answers until later on in the day. A lot of this attack still remains unanswered. Terror levels have been high ever since, and many views on foreign countries have changed. Many people have compared this attack to the attack on Pearl Harbor, but personally, I believe the attacks on the trade centers and the pentagon are more intense, probably because I lived it myself. Tell us your story: The Lord John is a small pub/bar in a small town in the UK, it was just another shift and I was as usual pulling pints and serving customers. One of our more frequent customers came in and said something about there being a crash in the U.S, I didnt take much notice untill I got home some 2hours later. My mum had the television on and was siting on the sofa with her mouth wide open as CNN showed the second plane hitting the twin towers, at first it looked like it was just flying behind it, then the red's, oranges and black filled the screen. There was a TV for us to watch, and as we tuned in we were devastated as we watched it live. A day in my lifetime that I never expected to witness. My heart went out to all of the ones who were lost in these attacks as well as to their family and friends. I lost a teenage daughter in a tragic car accident so I know the meaning of un-prepared, un-expected, sudden loss of a love one. These heros will be in my heart and prayers for the rest of my life here on earth. Out of every thing bad, good does happen. After first period I went to my locker and got my books to go to Global Studies with Mrs. Capen. All that week and the week before we had been learning about the Taliban government that was ruling Afghanistan. It was about 8:50a.m and another teacher came into our classroom and told Mrs. Capen to turn the T.V monitor in our room on to the CNN news channel because there was something big happening. At first it didn?t seem real as we sat there watching worldwide news broadcast showing an attack on our country, it just couldn?t be happening to our country. I just tried to keep telling my self that it was only an accident but the more and more I watched the more I knew that it wasn?t. Sitting there, staring in complete silence, the only noise was coming from the T.V with the news broadcasters telling the country of the tragic event that we know all know as September 11th. A strange, horrible feeling of horror filled the classroom 208. Everyone sat there in shock as we saw the second plane hit the second tower. I got a dizzy feeling; my heart was pounding out of fear and rage for my country. There was a hard feeling in my chest making it hard to breathe. For the rest of the day, I was terrified. My older sister Kristen is in the Army and all I could think was that she was going to war. Not only that but she had been sent to New York City to work with people in the World Trade towers a week before and I was terrified that she was in there when they were attacked. Later I went to the office and used the phone to call my mom to see how my sister was and they had finally gotten a hold of her but it was hard because of all the satellite air traffic from the use of all the cellular phones. By 7th period I was so outraged that I couldn?t handle going to my earth science class with Mr. Goldpenny so I sat at my locker to calm down as I cried from fear and anger for my countries freedom and the lives of the people. I was scared, I was mad and I felt so sorry for everyone in those towers, the planes and the families that lost a loved one in the attack. As I was sitting at my locker Troy Langendorfer who is one of my best friends came down and sat with me. He put his arm around me and gave me a hug to try and calm me down, luckily it worked. This attack brought people closer together than before, people gathered together to cope with their losses, to help clean up, and just over all uniting as a people. People began respecting their country and their neighbors, and realizing just how good we have it in our country. Our ally and neighboring country Canada even began to hang the United States flag out to show support for our country. This is definitely something that will never be forgotten, much like the attack on Pearl Harbor. Our small private school day had just started, and most of the Administrators and staff were in the main office. I answered a call around 8:30. It was my adult daughter who said, "Mom, two planes have just crashed into the World Trade Center Towers!" I said, "Monica, oh Monica, what are you saying? What has happened???" Because my daughter was at that time eight months pregnant, everyone standing there was immediately alert. I am sure their first thoughts were of my daughter and the baby. She repeated the news, and I turned to those in the office and told them what she had said. Of course, all of us were stunned and speechless. At that point terrorism was only speculation but fairly strong speculation. Suddenly everyone began moving, looking for something to do--but what does one do!?! Within minutes we began receiving non-stop calls and fielding parental concerns. One mother even brought a television to the office for us to follow the story. Somehow, I was the one answering the phone most of the morning, and somehow I was able to speak coherently to try to reassure parents that their children were safe with us. Later that morning the Administrators made the older students (above fourth grade) and the staff aware of the situation, and an excellent letter was prepared to send home with all students that day. My grieving came today. I guess because I did not have time to process it September 11, 2001. It took a year for it to "hit" me. May we never forget what evil men can do!!! I immediately called my best friend, a North Carolina girl born and bred. We both cried as the Towers came tumbling down before our eyes, taking all those people with them, even though we didn't know a single person there. I knew how very big the towers were and how many people they could hold because I'd been there on class trips from school. I have to say, I was very relieved that the death toll wasn't higher. It truly could have been so much worse, although not for those that lost loved ones. They are still gone. A former member of our church was living in NYC when the planes hit and she saw it happen while she was on her way to work. She has since moved back home. I grew up in Monmouth County, NJ. My Girl Scout leaders' house was on the highest point in the county. After our meetings were over each week, we'd go sit out front and watch the glitter of the welders torches. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My September 11th began by performing some small tasks around the neuroscience lab I work in at Indiana University. I had just completed my work for the morning when I overheard someone saying there was a fire at the Pentagon. Not really understanding fully what this meant, I left the building for my first class of the day. As I made my way to class I had to pass through the student union building. Inside, I could hardly believe the number of people huddled around two free-standing televisions in a popular study area. Just after someone told me what happened, the first tower crumbled to the ground. I can only say I was shocked. I remember making my way to class, but not really being present in mind. After I got back to the union, I heard about the plane crashing outside of Pittsburgh. That is the point at which I became an emotional mess on that day. My parents live outside of Pittsburgh, and the news was not specific as to how far from Pittsburgh the plane crashed. After making frantic phone calls to my father at work (I found out later he was sent home), and being unable to get through to my mother and sister, I made my way to my apartment. The lab I had that afternoon was of no concern. Phone call after phone call was left until I finally reached the answering machine for a quick, teary message. At this point I was worrying about all of the people I know who could have been hurt. A friend was doing an internship in DC and another friend's father works in Manhattan not far from the WTC. My cousin who is a flight attendant for United and who used to be based out of Boston. My uncle and cousin in Boston who fly all the time for business. My aunt who travels to and from California for seminars often. After tallying these people, I promptly ran to the bathroom to 'pray to the porcelain god.' So many loved ones could be hurt, and there was nothing I could do. To say it will be a day I never forget would be an understatement. And it should be a day no one forgets. The fact that these people I have listed COULD have been killed is what made this horrible event even more jarring. From that day forth my awareness of just how easily loved ones can be taken from us increased exponentially. To me the lasting message is to reach out and tell your loved ones that you care about them in words and actions NOW, before life's fragile walls crumble around you. Tell us your story: Well September 10, 2001 I was talking with my Godfather and my cousin about all the War movies that were coming out and my Godfather explained that when there are alot of War movies they are trying to prepare you for War. My cousin and I looked at each other like Sure, thats why they do it. My Godfather looked at me and said "Mija, i am telling you." All day went by and I kept thinking about what my Godfather told me, trying not to take it seroius at all. Well the next morning September 11, 2001 the phone was ringing like always to wake my younger cousin, Ashley up for school but this call was different. Ashley was walking through the house yelling "Daddy, Mommy says to turn on the t.v., Daddy wake up Mommy wants to talk to you." Well I got up to help Ashley get ready for school and turned on the t.v. to see what was so important and that is when the second plane was going into the 2nd tower. I could not believe my eyes. I tried to wake up again and again only to realize I was not dreaming. What I saw was true. I went running into my Godfathers room yelling at him "Nino, wake up!" "A plane flew into a building!" He flew out of his bed to see the replays over and over. The news wouldn't let us forget because over and over the whole day you see the horrifying tragedy which caused so many deaths to innocent people. To lose there lives doing what so many of us do every day, go to work to support our familys. All morning I couldn't move from my seat on the couch frozen to the t.v. to find out what our President was going to do. My Godfather kept telling me "I told you!" "Our country is going to declare War on those Bastards." I was so sad for all those poor people whose familys were left behind to wonder if they got out alive. Ashley asked, " Why did this happen?" I could not understand why this was happening and to try to explain this to a 7 yr old was even harder. I answered "That not all people are nice or think before about how things are after you do something." "Not all people care about themselves or others, that is why it is important that you do." Up until today every Holiday was scary. The news telling you "Beware." Or hearing from a neighbor or co-worker did you hear about the warnings to stay home? Don't leave home! I used to despise History in Highschool but now I truly understand why we learn about the past. So that WE can not make mistakes that have been made way back when, so OUR children and childrens children DO NOT have another 9/11 or WWI, WWII. WE WILL STAND UNITED FOREVER. It looks to me like yesterday... i was in my job (i'm a policeman)in a supermarket, 12h50 more or less, when a friend told to me to go to the bar and watch the tv, because an airplane crashed in the WTC. When i arrive and look to the tv, i see the second plane crash in the second tower, and i asked to my friend: "ey that was a second plane?". And so it was, after that we realize the dimension of the tragedy. We look like zombies, with the eyes sticked in the screen. When the towers crumbled down, i was almoust in shock. Tell us your story: I was a freshman in high school having a normal day I went to first hour, U.S. Government Excel, and then I went to second hour, Keyboarding 1. We were just doing a normal assignment and having a normal class and the bell rang and so I left and headed toward my third hour class, Physical Science Excel. On my way one of my classmates was like "they bombed us, we'll get them back." And this kid was one of those people that you just kinda ignore not knowing what they are really talking about so I just nodded my head and smiled. Then I walk it third hour and some people are like oh my god I can't believe this happened and me and some other people were trying to figure out what was going on. So we asked one of my classmates and they were like well the World Trade Centers were hit and I was like World Trade Centers? I didn't know what the World Trade Centers were or where they were at, at first I didn't even know what they were...I was so confused. Well the bell rang for class to start so everyone sat down and my teacher was like well I'm sure you all heard what happened. And some of us were like no so she explained. I was still kinda of confused but she turned on the news and we started watching it. I think I watched the news in all of my classes except in spanish class where some kid decided we should watch it on the spanish channel so you really couldn't tell what was going on. And finally our prinicipal came over the intercom and explained what happened and announced that all after school activities were cancelled. So the rest of the day I went home and watched the news and whenever I wasn't busy I watched the news and I recall how for like the whole next week that was like the only thing on the regular channels. I didn't really understand what was going on at first but I definately understand now and I know I will never forget that day because it's like I know it will the back of my hand. And I remember from then on everyone had red, white, and blue and flags. My first thought was: It's a scene from an upcoming movie but when it was announced that the scene was happening in New York live, I was astonished. The whole city was in astonishment. It was unreal to even consider anything of such cruelty happening in the world. When I went to Bible Study that night we read about the fall of the Twin Towers. It's scriptual but very sad. In a lot of things that's happening in the world today are signs of the approach of the world ending. My heart really go out to the families and love ones of the people who were directly affected by the happenings of September 11, 2001. My son is a Fire Paramedic here in Greenville, North Carolina and I shutter to think if the incident had happened here. I pray that God grant strength, grace, and mercy to everyone involved. He had said that some terrorists had hijacked some planes and flew them into buildings such as the World Trade Center and the pentagon. Everyone in the class was confused about what had happend. I thought a few guys had flown them into buildings, but I was wrong. There were hostages, inocent people, on the plane with them when it had crashed. I was mad and sad when they had crashed into the first building, the second building, and then the Pentagon. I am angry for what happend. Yes my life han changed scince September 11. Now I am a little more fearful scince the planes had crashed. Now I have one more fear. My new fear is I am afraid of some people. I am being a little cautious to solve this fear. I think the act of bravery should be rembered from 9/11. Firemen put there life on the line to save people. Also, the people who stopped the plane from crashing into a building should be rembered.
