Seven o'clock wake up, seven thirty breakfast, eight off to school. I sat in the first class of the day, a computer science lab, and instead of paying attention to the instructor I was busy chatting away on Instant Messanger. My best friend started sending me frantic messages that made little sense to me. "America has been attacked". I wrote it off as nothing . Of course I was wrong, I do not feel the need to go over what happened next because all of the grusome details are stitched in all of our minds. But the one thing that did stick out in my mind was that I finally understood what adults meant when the talked about JFK. Tell us your story: when i first heard of the news, i had just gotten out of the shower. my mom was watching the news and was telling me what had happened. i really didnt know what to say. i didnt have very strong feelings at that moment. i got ready for school and by the time i left, the planes had crashed into the world trade center and into the pentagon. when i got to my first class, my teacher was listening to the radio. we didnt listen to the radio that long and we then started class as usual. i continued with my day as normal as i could. you couldnt get away from it, everyone was talking about it. one strong memory i have is when i was walking to my second period class, i looked into one of the classrooms that had a television on and i saw the buildings collapse. it was strange to think of the people that were still in the building. when i got home from school, i turned on the television and i just sat watching the television for while. they just kept showing the planes crashing and them collapsing. i just turned the television off and trid not to think about it much and find a way to deal with it in my own way. When someone came in and stated that the a plane just crashed in the WTC. Being myself from NY(born and raised there for 33 years) and having just moved to Cleveland, I still consider NY my home. Therefore when she stated what happened I went on break and watched the next plane hit from the television monitor posted outside by the Halle Building. I was stunned!. I could not move because It brought back memories from the bomb that hit in 93 as I was in the WTC at the time on a lunch break, and I thought that it would never happen again. When the towers fell I fell apart, all my memories of the times I spent there during my lunch and the hustle and bustle of the area came flooding back. I was concerned that maybe some people I knew that worked there might have been killed ( I was lucky as no one personal to me was killed or injured.)When it was announced that this was a terrorist attack my anger took over. I was furious and also scared of what else could happen. At that point the only thing I wanted was to go home and be with my family. I sat in front of the news that day for hours watching the coverage and crying for all those that were lost. Then my anger returned again and my NY spirit of never giving up or giving In ,took over and due to the fact that the next day was supposed to be my fathers's memorial service and all flights were cancelled. Me and all my brothers and sisters that were supposed to fly to florida from (Cleveland, Texas,and Tennessee) Decided we would find a way to get there for one reason to honor my Father a veteran who fought for freedom(something the terrorist were trying to make us feel unsure of ) and also as a signal that no one enemy can ever keep us down or hiding as in so many other countries. We all made it by renting a car and driving, some of us for 24-36 hours straight, my brother in Tennesee for a business meeting could not get a rental car so he rented himself a charter bus paying the price of a full bus to get him back to Florida in time. We all made it safe and in one piece and the memorial service that we did not only became that of one for my father but those who perished in The WTC of a country that my father was very proud to serve to ensure our freedom! He asked if I had heard the news. I said that I hadn't. He said: "Dad, you need to turn on the television. Two planes have crashed into the World Trade Center Towers". I couldn't believe it. I hung up the phone and turned on the television. Both towers had already been hit. Having grown up in Manhattan, I felt that something very personal was happening to me. My thoughts went immediately to the potential magnitude of the loss. I wondered how many had already been killed or hurt and recognized that there could easily be thousands killed or hurt before it was over. I simply couldn't fathom the use of planes full of innocent people as weapons of mass destruction. I wondered how many new widows and orphans would be created on this single day and couldn't imagine the sadness that they would be feeling. As the reports began to come in about the plane that hit the Pentagon and then, about the plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, I suddenly recognized that anxiety was setting in. I wondered how many more planes were in the air and headed for other targets. The site of the south and the north tower collapsing were surreal and were made even more so by the relative objectivity with which the television reporters were describing the events. I wanted to speak with my wife and children even though I was virtually certain that they were all alright. As it became evident that these were well planned terrorist attacks, my anxiety was quickly replaced with anger. I remember having thoughts of revenge and quickly coming to the conclusion that the only sure means of getting at these shadowy figures would be to treat any nation that harbored them in the same way that we would treat the terrorists themselves. I was amazed that within hours, President Bush was on television vocalizing exactly what I had been thinking. I remember how proud I felt to be an American and a native New Yorker. I remember thinking that I wanted to do something to help but had no idea what. As the day progressed, I remained glued to the television in my office. I eventually again heard from my son and then from my daughter who was also at college in Boston. I remember feeling relieved that they were both alright. When my wife came home from her day of teaching school, she told me that the young son of the secretary at our local high school was in his office, high in the south tower of the World Trade Center and on the phone with his mother when the second plane hit. I remember thinking that it was unlikely that he had survived and that it could easily have been one of my sons or my daughter. The facts continued to unfold and the television pictures became increasingly surreal. I wondered how the events of the day would impact upon the bigger historical picture and in what context the day would be remembered in the future. I had no doubt that none of our lives, as Americans would ever be the same. I knew that the world had become a different place. Tell us your story: I am Sergeant with NYC Health Department Police unit, I just left my son 30 minutes earlier (8:05) at his new school in kew gardens Queens, from there I proceeded to patrol the sites I supervise and prepared to enter a meeting at 125 worth street for 9:00 am. I was going into manhattan through the BQE, I saw a sizeable amount of traffic, I was concerned I be late for my meeting, I look to my right there was tower one smoking, I called my chief of department to see what was going on , he replied a cessna flew into the world trade one, I said okay and montior radio traffic to see what was going on. I am hearing eyewitness accounts on 1010 WINS about the problem, I figure let me get off the highway, but I couldnt, I approached greenpoint avenue exit and saw emergency vehicles heading into midtown tunnel proceeding to manhattan. I thought to myself there's my brothers in red and blue doing what they do best, I hesitated to go with them figuring they could handle the job. I took! the sidestreets of brooklyn to get to the Manhattan bridge, I am still listening to the radio" ....oh my god another one hit the twin towers" was screamed across the radio..I knew then it was a terrorist attack , I proceeded to contact my Chief again but the cell phone went dead, at this point I was flooring the gas to get downtown, traffic was hell, people was standing outside thier cars looking at the carnage, Health Department has a medical station at flatbush extension in Ft.Green brooklyn, I proceeded there. I arrived at 0915 hours, citywide call for first responderfs went out, first responders couldnt get through, I grab 2 officers from that medical station, and some health department civilian personell, we set up a incident command center for the Health Department at Ft.Green, and then proceeded to untangle the mess of traffic on flatbush avenue feeding from Atlantic avenue, we shut down the left lanes on opposites sides of the avenue to allow responders through, and! diverted traffic away from the area.. to this day I regret doing that, I was able to get 3 engines and 2 ladders through, One of which was the ill fated engine pictured in the daily news crossing the brooklyn bridge. At 1000 hours I recieved help from NYPD recruits, that help allowed me to get repsonders and thier personal vehicles through. One of my officers said Sarge they are in need of medical supplies, I ordered civilians and 3 responding Health Police officers to empty the clinics of thier medical supplies and load it into my pickup truck, a redcross voulnteer appeared from nowhere and ask if he could assist, No problem I said , this whole time I had my back turned to Manhattan and I turned around and saw clouds of dust, people started yelling the buildings are collapsing," radio traffic ..my deputy chief screaming to one of our detective to run to chambers street" ... about this time truck was fully loaded, and we proceeded to 125 worth street and foley square park ! where a triage area was set up. The journey was slow everyone was runnning out the city and crossing over the Manhattan bridge, I arrived at 1100 hours the scene was incredible ghosts walking through the canyon of hereos'..these were people covered in white dust, Red cross voulnteer was still with me after we drop off supplies, there was a major need for water, we retrieve 60 30 gallaon water bottles from health department offices at 2 lafayette street. We proceeded back to brooklyn where I was to meet other health police officers reporting for duty, I got back to flatbush extension, and responding NYFD firefighters were walking from Atlantic avenue and requested a drop into ground zero, I made 5 trips that afternoon. Red Cross still by my side help me answer a call for orange juice ( go figure). We went to northern boulevard in Queens to get fuel for our police vehicles, since all gas stations used by the city in brooklyn was out of gas. Red Cross saw a Western Beef Store a! cross from the Merit Gas Station on Northern Boulevard, He said " I'll be right back" . As I top the tank off, he says I have a suprise for you, Western beef donated 300 half gallon containers of Orange juice, Lights and Sirens we loaded it up and got it downtown to the three triage areas that was set up at Pace, Foley square and 125 worth street, with that Red Cross disappeared and went to the Hot zone to retireve bodies. That night 20 health police officers, NYS court officers , and NYC police and myself secure the perimeters of lower manhattan, till this day I still see the yellow haze and feel the choking dust in my lungs, oh yeah I was given a souvenier "WTC Cough", 1 year later I still have it. I just happend to walk through the xray department and saw smoke fire on the TV. I stoppped and looked as they recapped the first plane the hit the twin towers. I was running a little late; got out of the shower and the news was on. All I could see was a burning building. At the time I did not know where at first but I then found out it was the WTC. That was before the second tower got hit. I was on my way to work when I heard the news. I knew it was serious because every radio station was pre-empted. I got to work and learned that the second tower had been hit. All of us were glued to the television and in shock the whole day. My husband called me when the first tower collapsed and said that he had to leave the room since he started breaking out in tears. And there is not much that causes him to do this. The following day two of my colleagues got into a fight and were terminated. Apparently the stress caused them to get into what ended up as a physical confrontation because they were arguing about the volume of the TV at work. I think the thing that affected me most was the silence in the DFW area. I live close to the airport and it was very strange not hearing the planes overhead. That and the flags at half mass was very emotional. I guess what scares me the most is that I could very well have been me on that plane as I travel frequently. I sometimes have nightmares about nuclear attacks, bombs, bio threats, etc. I can't even begin to imagine the terror going through those people's minds. I recently suffered a severe panic attack when boarding a plane and had to get back off the plane and take a later flight as I was suffering from so much anxiety. My heart goes out to all families, friends, and collegues of those lost in the 9/11 attack. Tell us your story: 2001, i was 16 years old, a sophomore in high school. still a child, but maturing into an adult......... i remember waking up on 9-11, to see my cousin in my living room watching tv. this is appox. 530 am PST. seeing the twin towers on fire, i thought this was some kinda movie or something on the sci-fi channel. being scared i asked, "hey whatcha watching?" he said someone flew the plane into the towers. stunned, i got dressed for school which starts at 815. so i had less than 3 hours to go. i got dressed as fast as i could, and sat with him. we talked and talked about it, who did this? why did they do it? was it an accident? then we watched in horror as the second plane went into the other tower. news breaks flashing in and out with the other planes and their crashes. shocked, we go to school and find everyone there talking about it, crying, huddling up. being a peer counselor, i had so many referrals that day. i was scared so i couldn't help my classmates, when i needed help myself. was this what my grandparents felt when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? My parents when Kennedy was shot? my older cousins when Challenger exploded? after a rough day at school, we had our Boy Scout Meeting. Me, being the Senior Patrol Leader (Head Scout) i had to explain to 10 younger Scouts what happened and help them cope with what had happened. that weekend was our yard sale, so we made a flagpole, raised the flag to full mast, said the plegde of alleigence, then lowered the flag to half mast while Taps played on a CD player. we then observed a moment of silence for all that were lost, and prayed for the people who were trapped in the debris. looking back 5 years later, i see how precious life is and how sudden it can change. its still makes me scared and i get goosebumps when i see the video of the planes hitting, or the towers crumbling. i get teary-eyed when i see the Pentagon smoking and people running everywhere. what calms my fears and makes me proud is Flight 93. how such couragous people, sensing something was wrong, decided to risk their lives so many more could live. what if it hit the Capitol? our lawmakers wouldn't be here. and if it had struck the White House, what would the US response be? we can infer many things from 9-11. it will always always be a sad day, but amidst all the tears and cries, average joes and janes became heroes. we all reached out, regardless of race, sex or religious beliefs, and said "my fellow american, feel free to cry on my shoulder, everything will be ok" Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Tell us your story: THE NEWS BROADCAST CAME ACROSS THE SCREEN AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING.IT WAS ONE OF THOSE FEELING WHEN YOU WONDER, "AM I REALLY SEEING THIS OR IS IT A SCENE FROM SOME MOVIE?" YOU HAVE A COMPLETE FEELING OF HELPLESS, PURE HORROR. BEING HOME I WANTED ALONE I WANTED TO REACH OUT AND CONTACT MY WHOLE FAMILY, HERE IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD. I FINALLY REACHED MY HUSBAND ON HIS CELL PHONE ON THE JOB SITE WHERE HE WAS WORKING OUT OF TOWN. HE HAD NOT HEARD THE NEWS AND HE COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS TELLING HIM. HE HUNG UP WITH ME AND I TRIED TO REACH MY OLDEST DAUGHTER IN SCOTLAND. SHE IN RETURN HAD HEARD THE NEWS AND WAS CALLING ME AT THE SAME TIME I WAS DIALING HER. BY NOW I WAS IN A COLD SWEAT, THE REALITY THAT SHE HAD ONLY 12 DAYS PRIOR BEEN IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. SHE WAS IN NEW YORK WITH HER IN-LAWS AND HAD TAKEN THEM ON THEIR FIRST TOUR OF THE CENTER. HER HUSBAND WORKS FOR THE GLASGOW BRANCH OF MORGAN STANLEY AND I THANKED GOD THAT HE WORKS IN SCOTLAND INSTEAD OF HERE IN THE STATES. I ALSO PRAYED FOR THE VICTIMS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FOR EVERYONE EVERYWHERE. THINGS WERE HAPPENING SO FAST AND YOU DID NOT KNOW WHERE THEY WOULD HIT NEXT. I EXPERIENCED ALL SORTS OF FEELINGS IN SUCH A SHORT TIME BUT I THINK THE STRONGEST ONE WAS THE FEELING OF COMPLETE OUTRAGE. I STILL HAVE THAT FEELING ALMOST A YEAR LATER. I ALSO INSTALLED A FEAR IN ME THAT IS STILL THERE TODAY AND WILL PROBABLY STAY WITH ME THE REST OF MY LIFE. I WAS PLANNING A TRIP TO VISIT MY DAUGHTER IN SCOTLAND, I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2001. ON DECEMBER 27, I FINALLY GOT UP THE NERVE TO MAKE MY TRIP BUT I WILL ADD I DID IT WITH COLD FEET AND CLAMMY PALMS. THE TRIP WAS SMOOTH BUT THE FEAR PF FLYING WAS NOT IN ME BEFORE 9/11. I MIGHT ADD THAT I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY SECURITY HAD BEEN BEEFED UP, THIS ALSO HELPED TO CALM MY FEARS. I'LL CLOSE WITH THE HOPE AND PRAYER THAT WE WILL NOT EVER BE HIT WITH A HEARTLESS BLOW LIKE WE EXPERIENCED THIS PAST SEPTEMBER. What turned a beautiful day into a day that will always remain in the hearts and minds of every person in the City, Country and World. I can say that I cried so much for people I never met. All the people became part of my family. Never had the work Family ment so much. One year later I am still troubled and very sad at the mention of the World Trade Center, or the other people how are not with us now. God Bless us all. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I worked on the 25th floor of the WTC Tower One in 1999 for a bond broker. In the summmer of 2000 i took my old job back at Merrill Lynch across the street while a lot of my coworkers took jobs at Cantor Fitzgerald. I remember all my coworkers saying you can make more money at Cantor why are you going back to Merrill. I went back because I like the working environment at Merrill and I was close to my old boss, Tom Sasso. Tom was a good neighborhood guy from Brooklyn and grew up a lot like i did in Jersey City, NJ. That decision saved my life, who would have thought. I got off the ferry from Jersey City on 09/11/01 and heard a loud explosion and then the fireball. Since I came in from the Jersey side I didn't see the plane, just the explosion. Then what looked like snow almost coming down in droves, it was actually all the paper and glass and other things. As i got closer to Merrill building in the WFC debris was falling all around, body parts, plane parts, everything. I bolted into the Merrill building for cover and went up to my office. As we were talking about the explosion and what happened we watched in horror as the second plane came in. After that plane hit we knew it was an attack. Me and Tom were the last guys to leave the floor after telling everyone to get out. Once outside we hung around and couldn't believe what we were seeing. People were diving to their deaths, some holding hands others just leaping. It was the worst thing someone can watch, you felt so hopeless not being able to help. I was a cop for a short period of time and US Navy Reserves six years and for me not being able to help will haunt me the rest of my life. I managed to get one of the last ferries out of NYC before the towers fell. I was walking from the ferry to my car when the first one went down, it will be in head for the rest of my life. Not one day goes by when i don't think about it. I bolted home, checked on grandfather, pounded a bottle of scotch and went down to the waterfront to volunteer. The JCPD and JCFD were all their waiting to go over and help. I helped load ferries full of food and water and helped people off the ferry that were hurt. I went over to NYC to help in the rescue attempt but I didn't save or find anyone alive. As time went on and I started to find out who didn't make out i became very angry and depressed. I went to 22 funerals and wakes over the months and hated life. I got into a battle with a street gang in my niehgborhood that came over from NYC that was causing havoc on the block. They would run on my roof every night so i couldn't sleep and follow all over town. This is while i was going back to the WTC site and at work at Merrill. We move back to the old building one month after the attacks. One week after the attacks Merrill Lynch aske if I would retrieve important information from the WFC and i did. It took me 14 hours but the firm needed to get back on it's feet. I always liked Merrill Lynch and what they stood for. As time went on the gang continued to harasss me and i put my house up for sale and moved down the shore and commuted into NYC. Eventually i couldn't sell the house and lost it to foreclosure but not before running up credit card bills to pay for the mtge and living down the shore. I don't know what was worse sometimes, being in 09/11 and burying 22 buddies or battling this street gang. As time went on things got back to normal for me minus my house and credit rating, things that shouldn't have happened to me. Let's just say the three years after 09/11 have been three years i would like to forget ever happened. Maybe one day years from now i will be back on my feet and can hold my head high. For i battled evil in 09/11 and afterwards and will continue to do so. Evil shall never overcome good, it can't. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I moved my belongins to my new home on Sep.1st, but I stayed at my mom's house for a week with my family before moving in. That time I was pregant with my second child. On Sep. 11 2001 I was cleaning the leaving room when my husband called me on the phone and told me that a place had hit the WWC. I could not believe. I had this bad feeling that there was going to be more tragety. MY cable was going to be connected the following 2 days. So I used the radio. When I heard them saying that the towers were collapsing and the planes hitted Pent. and Pen. I was in shock and crying. I did't had love ones in those trageties, but I felt sad and misery. I felt as if I had loved ones there even know I don't. I was born in Brazil, but I have this nation as my own. A Pastor that visited a Brazilian church that I was going to, said that he knew some of the Brazilian people that died in Sep 11. In fact those people that he knew were from a Assembly of God. I felt deeply sad and my sympathy goes to all the families that lost loved ones. To conclude, I hope that from this tragety the people from this nation not only Americans, trust and deeply believe in God. God doesn't punish us the way we think, he only let the evil show to us that God is all mighty. From a tragety God show us how strong we can be and that he is the only God. I was at school and my class must have been the only class without a T.V. because all my friends had seen the planes hit on the news. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am an American Christian woman. The morning of September 11th, 2001 I was home alone preparing to leave for work. My husband, a Palestinian from Jordan, and a Muslim, had gone to Amman, Jordan to visit his children. He was due to fly home on the 17th, the following Monday. As I dressed, I was in a Paltalk room on the internet where my husband spends a lot of time chatting with other Arab friends about the situation in Palestine. Most of the conversation is in Arabic, but I felt somehow closer to my husband being in that room. hearing the voices and knowing that there were friends of his there. Suddenly someone typed in text, "A plane has hit the World Trade Center building!" and I ran to the television to see the news for myself. I watched over and over again the horrible scenes being replayed on the news there. I was in shock. And somehow I was getting the sense that this had something to do with some Arab people. Could it be the Palestinians, retaliating for what the USA is doing to support and fund Israel's cruelty to their people in the homeland? That was my first thought. And I longed to be with my husband more than anything else, to have him home safe with me. But then I wondered, as strange as the thought was, if he was safer where he was in a Middle Eastern country than he would be here in the USA with me. The danger for the first time in my life seemed to be here. I rushed to work and no one there in the store seemed to be aware of what had occurred. When I told them they immediately turned on a display television and we all watched in agony what was happening in New York City and other parts of the East Coast. I paced back and forth. Tears were in my eyes. I needed to talk with my husband. One of the managers saw how visibly distraught I was and said I was free to go home. I arrived at the house and immediately turned on the internet and searched for some way to contact my husband. I thanked God when I saw a Palestinian friend online, a young man in Irbid, Jordan. I asked him if he would please call my husband for me and tell him I needed him to contact me. He left the internet cafe where he was on the computer and called my husband and came back to tell me that my husband would come online shortly to speak with me. By the time I spoke with my husband the news of our tragedy here in the USA had reached around the world. He and all those he knew there were appalled by what had been done to the Americans. He was beside himself, and all he wanted was to come home. During the week between then and the day he was to return to the USA, he barely ate, lost interest in all activities he had planned with his children, shopping for things to bring home, etc. And then we began to worry. We heard that no international flights were being allowed to fly into our airports. We feared that the flights from the Middle Eastern countries, with the speculation of the perpetrators of the attack being from that area, would be even more under suspicion. It was time to pray. I knew a Jewish Christian woman online who I had met there because of her support and sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians. She belonged to several pray groups online and when we spoke online she said that there would be thousands of people praying for my husband's safe return. My church posted prayer requests concerning September 11th on a bulletin board and among them was my request for prayer for my husband's safe return. Friends and family prayed as well. My husband would have been gone 17 days that coming Monday when he was due to fly back to Chicago, an unbearable amount of time to be without him for me. But by Saturday still no flights had been allowed into our airports from abroad and by Sunday only two, one from Paris and one from London. But still we prayed and had hope. Late Sunday night, my husband received a call from Air Jordanian. His flight was to be the first that would be allowed into the USA from Jordan! Thank you, Lord! We worried that things might be difficult either in Shannon Airport where he would change planes and face US immigration or on arrival here at O'Hare airport in Chicago. He was expecting to see the military pointing rifles at the Arabs on arrival. In Shannon, when the US immigration official looked at his passport, he took my husband to their office. My husband thought for sure they had found some reason to send him back to Jordan on the next flight. But people were still praying. And God answers prayer. The immigration official said there was a problem with his travel permission. His heart sank. The official continued, explaining that he was qualified for more time than had been initially granted him and that he (the official) would correct that so that my husband would have that additional time added to his travel document. What a relief! Instead of a problem, it was a blessing. Hours later, at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, a very anxious wife was waiting for her husband to return. I had heard nothing from him since he told me that he was told his flight would leave Amman on schedule. I waited and waited, watching face after face come out of the gate area. Then I turned and saw the most beautiful sight, my husband's smiling face and open arms. God had brought him home to me! Since that day, life has changed for us because of some close-minded, misguided people who did the unthinkable. My husband works for a government nuclear laboratory. He is very educated and had been assured that he would soon be able to move up into a job there for which he is more qualified. But after September 11th, those positions are suddenly restricted to American citizens only. He is the same person, with the same qualifications and abilities that he was one year ago, but doors have been closed in his face. Friends at work have jokingly called him "Bin Laden" and if they see him looking more serious and pensive than usual they have said, "Are you planning a terrorist attack?" with a laugh. He knows they are just kidding. they are good friends. But it is an uncomfortable situation he has been thrown into out of no fault of his own. Other Arabs here in the USA, also being the same people they were before September 11th, have been verbally and physically attacked, or worse. One thing I know for sure. If we are to let what happened that morning one year ago make us more close-minded, more segregated, more prejudicial, then THEY will have won a tremendous victory in the hearts of the American people. Don't let it happen. Let America continue to be a place where all are welcome. where all the "tired, the poor, the huddled masses" can come to find the freedom for which they yearn. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It had started like any other day, I was getting my son and self ready to start our day. For some reason, I had awaken with a heavy heart and a strange feeling deep in my gut. I dropped my son off at school and made my way to work at the Public Safety Building. When I arrived, the Chief of Police, Captains, officers as well as office personnel were gathered in the briefing room watching what appeared to me to be a horrible scene from a training video or even a horror movie. As I approached and asked what was going on, and the look on their faces told me that this was not what I thought that it was. The Chief looked at me and explained what had happened and that this was taking place as we watched. I stood there in shock as I watched the 2nd plane hit, and watched as the towers started to go down. I knew what I was watching was real but I could not find the rationalization as to "why"? I asked myself over and over again, how can America and Americans be hated so much. Our agency was put on alert and all precautions were put into place. I know that we are far from New York and the Pentagon, but I have come to realize that we can never let our guard down as a Nation ever again. 9/11 should have been a wake up call for all Nations. I mourn for those lost and their families, for those who are ill from inhaling the dust at ground zero, but above all I mourn for those lives that have been lost since this war on terrorism began. I see everyday since that day as a day to live to live each day to the fullest. I will continue to pray for peace and for each and every Nation touched by this horrible word called "terrorism" God Bless America!
