Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was staying over my girlfriend's apartment in Hoboken, NJ. It's a town right across the river from NYC. We both worked at MSNBC at the time. I had a precious day off so she left for work as she usually did, late. I went back to sleep. The phone rang around 8:45am. I figured it was Maria telling me she arrived at work - as she did from time to time. Too lazy to get out of bed to answer the phone I let it ring. Then, less than ten seconds later the phone started to ring again. Again, I let it go into voicemail. I was wondering why she would try again so quickly. I figured I would call her back shortly. I buried my head in my pillow when the phone started ringing again right away. I thought, what in the world is this girl ringing the phone off the hook for? Doesn't she realize I might be in the shower or something? I rolled out of bed and picked up the phone. Hello? Maria's distraught voice echoed, "Turn on the TV, a plane just hit the World Trade Center." I asked her to repeat. I assumed a small plane had hit the side of the building. I wondered if anyone below on the street had been killed by falling wreckage. Then, when I saw the image we all know so well of the hole in the tower I realized it wasn't a small plane. Once she got my attention she had to get back to work - being that she works in cable news. I immediately knew I had to call my mother in Florida to tell her that I was okay because as with all mother's she would fear the worst. I dialed her at work while keeping an eye on the television. As soon as she answered I told her I was okay. "What are you talking about?" she asked. I realized she did not know what was going on. Once I told her she didn't believe me because I have a habit of joking around a lot. But I soon convinced her I was serious and that she should get to a TV. Suddenly I saw an explosion in the other tower on TV. I couldn't believe it was happening right across the river from where I was, less than a mile away. "Oh my God, mom, there's been an explosion! I have to go!" I assured her I would be okay then hung up. I then frantically got dressed. I propped the door open because I didn't have keys and ran outside. In front of the building is a bus stop. When I ran down the stairs I saw people just reading papers and waiting for the bus. I couldn't believe they didn't know. The first person I came up to was a blond woman. "Do you know what happened?" I asked frantically. She looked at me with a strange expression - I'm sure I looked a little crazy - and she shook her head no. I told her then took off around the corner to the waterfront. When I arrived there was a large group gathered watching the towers burn. Two large black plumes of smoke reached up and out into the sky. It was truly a surreal scene - one I still have trouble contemplating more than a year later. People were on cell phones talking about what was going on with people at home that had access to the news. I overheard different reports. "It was two planes, another plane, the Pentagon has been hit, terrorism." The magnitude of the moment was beyond me. Being a journalist the next thing I thought of was getting a camera. I went back to Washington Street, the main road in Hoboken, and went into a drug store owned by Asians to buy an instant camera. I was surprised they were still open and even more surprised how calm they were. One woman was sweeping. "Can you believe this?" I asked. "Terrible," the man said with an accent. "That'll be nine dollars please." I ran back across the street to a park to get a vantage point but the fence kept it out of view so I ran out of the park and down to the water. I remember an officer was stopping traffic going down towards the main part of Hoboken where the towers were best seen. As I walked I realized what a beautiful day it was. It was warm and sunny. I started walking along the water taking pictures every few minutes. It was such a strange feeling. I was alone as I walked along the water, it was a beautiful day, and I was taking pictures of death and destruction in the distance. As I approached the main park in Hoboken which is right across the water from the WTC I continued to snap pictures. One man yelled at me as I took another picture. "You're sick!" I felt bad. I wasn't taking pictures because I thought it was neat. I was talking them as if my mind was unable to compute what it was seeing and I knew I would need some sort of reference at a later time. As I walked into the park I ended up behind a group of trees and the WTC was out of view. Then I heard it. A rumble followed by screams. Men who were up in a high rise being built at the time roared in agony as if their screams would somehow be able to stop what was happening. The first tower was falling down. Me and some others under the trees ran to get to the other side to see what was happening. When we emerged all we saw was a large cloud of smoke rolling through lower Manhattan. One tower was gone. People all around me were crying out, sobbing, swearing at nameless people. I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. A woman started calling out. "Does anybody want to pray for the families?" She started a prayer circle and I joined about 20 others. She prayed for about two minutes but at the time it seemed so useless although being a Christian I know it wasn't. While standing there I tried to dial my phone to reach more family and friends but it was dead. I asked a woman if I could borrow her phone but she said hers didn't work either. She had an accent that sounded German. Having lived in Germany I asked if she was but she said she was from Israel. "We see this in Israel every day," she said. Soon an officer was chasing us out of the park. We all slowly retreated back out of the park. I stopped for a few moments as the other building burned. I think I was in shock as after a few minutes I simply turned and walked away. Once around the corner and out of sight of the WTC I heard another rumble and more screams. "The other tower just fell," I said to myself. I found a payphone where I decided to call my sister in Florida collect. An opperator put me right through. "Hey Jen! It's Steve! Calling from wonderful New York!" I said trying to be funny. I then started sobbing. I told her I was okay, that I loved her, and that I wanted her to get right with God. I told her to call friends of mine as getting through was so difficult. I trudged back to Maria's apartment where I called her at work and told her I was coming in. We were told about the attacks via email from our principal and told NOT to tell the children. As I sat at the computer screen reading about the attacks, I felt my heart sink and my brain struggled to turn around and face 24 students with a smile on my face. How I did it I will never know. I felt like a zombie the entire day as I taught the subjects. Parents began showing up to pick up their sons and daughters and I wanted so badly to leave and hug my children. I live near TMI, the nuclear reactor and my biggest fear was that it would be targeted too. I was so glad when school was over and I could go home and just let out all the emotions I felt that day. I wanted to stay with my family and never leave them. My mind still cannot handle the terrible hatred these people have for us. I know I will never forget where I was and what I felt that day. Tell us your story: When I was young, I heard my grandparents talk about remembering exactly where they were and exactly what they were doing when JFK was shot..my mother can tell me to this day who she was with and where she was when she found out Elvis had died. I believe everyone will always remember where they were, what they were doing, and who they were with on September 11th, 2001.. I had just started homeschool that week, and as usual, I was sleeping in. My grandfather came in that morning and asked me to come turn on the tv, that two planes had collided in New York...little did I know when I turned on the tv that morning that I would witness the biggest event of my life. I think we sat and stared in disbelief and horror for hours. I attempted to do my schoolwork, but was unable to. My uncle was due to come home that day, he had been out of town with his work..my niece, or technically cousin, had just turned 8 months old on the 3rd..we were unable to get ahold of him that day, and it was the only time he hadn't sent my aunt an itinerary, as well as the secretary at his office. When we finally spoke with him, we were all relieved. It was a scary day for all, and my prayers are still with those effected by that tragic day. God bless them all. Nothing could have prepared me or anyone of us for what we were to experience in the days following such a harrowing event. Directely after September 11, 2001, my sister and I had to fly to South Carolina due to the death of my brother. It took all of the courage we could gather to board that flight and return at a later date. The one thing that has helped us through this is the power of prayer. We were on our way to the baby's doctor and when we walked into the office the receptionist told us that a plane hit the one of the Twin Towers. The first thing I thought was it was an accident, I never thought of terrorism. After we got home from our appointment, we did learn it was terrorism. What should have been one of the best days our lives was one of the saddest we've had. It was difficult to give complete attention to my newborn baby that had various difficulties that needed my full attention, when my heart was suffering for all of the people who perished on September 11th. The one question I think over and over every day, is how could anyone be so cruel and end so many people's lives? No God would commend any such act. They will have to pay in the end. While I was waiting for orientation to begin, another new employee came in the lunchroom and told us that "someone is attacking the WTC and the Pentagon." Now, as shocking as the news was, there was no television at this company, so we had to go by just what the radio stations were telling everyone. We listened to the radio all day, and once the day was over, I drove to get my husband at work. I continued to listen to the radio, and I started crying because of all the horror of the tragedy, yet neither my husband or I had yet to actually see the images of what happened. Once we arrived home, we immediately turned the TV onto CNN. I just stood still for what seemed like an eternity, yet, it was only a few minutes. The most terrifying image of that day was watching the coverage of people jumping from the WTC. That was what made me cry, scream and become furious that someone could do this to us, all in the name of a "religion????" My heart goes out to all the families of the victims and to all the heroes who survived and who sacrificed their lives to save others. I will always remember 9/11 and those who died will not have died in vain. America will win the war on terrorism, and we will prevail. As quickly as the thought entered, I pushed it aside trying to convince myself that something of that magnitude was simply not possible. Not here, not in our own country. When I reached my sister's home, she hadn't heard the news, so together we watched the mind numbing events unfold as the second tower was hit. At this point it was confirmed in my mind that this was indeed a terrorist attack and a clear picture of hatred at its worst. How could anyone, any group of people hold such disregard for innocence simply because we believed differently. Again, I thought, this is discrimination at its worst. As time throughout the day brought more screen images of the agony being suffered in New York, I began to weep for the lost, the ones left behind.I cryed with a sense of panic to hold near to me my own family. This time of tears turned into a sober state of mind as I watched footage of those fleeing the crumbling structures of the two tall towers. But this time I did not see racism, I did not see the different skin color, hair color, social standing, or religion walking away from the distruction. I was awestruck as I witnessed dust covered, people coming from the rubble. No ethnic markings, no differences were showing, just people. My brothers and sisters, my people. As the day turned into several, I no longer saw hatred or discrimination. I witnessed the coming together of a kinsmen for the common good. An outpooring of support, compassion and help in a great time of need. No longer hatred at its worst, but humanity at its best. It was a term of respect bestowed on a man who played every position on his softball team. And on a basketball court he could rifle passes from behind his back, thread a ball between a defenders legs, or just drain jump shots from anywhere on the court. The name grew on him because he immigrated to the United States from Cuba when he was 12 without knowing a word of English, but he studied and worked hard and was eventually appointed to the Board of Directors of the Mercantile Exchange in New York. His family also recognized his generosity, saying he was kind enough to give the same homeless person a couple of bucks the mornings that he walked from church in New York City to his office. "He could sing, too," said 23-year-old Christopher, one of Motroni's three sons. "He was in a salsa band for 25 years. . . . I'm telling you, my father earned that nickname. If I could be one-tenth of what my father was, I would be better than 99.9 percent of the people in the world." His father's success is part of the reason Christopher followed him into the world of stock trading. Every day when he got home from work, Mark asked Christopher, who lives with his parents, what he did that day and what he learned. Motroni helped Christopher to study for his impending Series Seven exam -- a test to be a licensed stock trader. Christopher drove into Hoboken every morning with his dad, where they both took the PATH train to work. Christopher could see the Twin Towers from his office and heard the boom when the first plane struck the North Tower. "I thought someone was throwing a parade," Christopher said. Even before the second plane struck, Christopher was frantically calling both his father and his mother, Emily. Christopher eventually headed back to Hoboken and waited there for three hours, praying that his father would bound off the ferry. He added that his family is still in a state of disbelief. I started very green as a commodity margin clerk in 1974, while attending college across the street at Pace University. That didn't last very long, as they reassigned me to the commodity futures deliveries department, where I first came to know Sr. Antonio Suarez. Antonio was my mentor for understanding the basics of the commodity business, both from the front office, as well, back office perspective. In my opinion, Antonio succeeded in delivering me new values, and for appreciating the contributions that one can impact for process. Antonio was a workhorse, and he carried this fledling until I could spread my wings a bit, and carry more load. I still miss my friend Antonio Suarez, and he is in my prayers always! Antonio introduced me to Mark Motroni while at an FIA conference, and Mark always flying high in those circles. I remember attending the funeral of Mark's mother, with Antonio very saddened by the passing of his dear sister and his comforting Mark. Mark and I had the opportunity to work for the same company together, although only for a short while, and he like his Uncle helped me to understand some of the business basics which he so graciously shared. Mark became the Vice-Chairman for NYMEX, and I then knew that he could transend some levels of attainment that many of us could hardly dream of in the business world! That's what we distinctly remember as our Hero! Believe Mark thoroughly enjoyed his participation in Orquesta Novel, and I just loved the combination of hearing that Charanga beat and sound, while simultaneously, associating him with Wall Street and his commitment for it! I remember joining Mark, with others, in Sao Paulo, Brazil not too long ago. He very much the Senior statesman and deriving a distinct contribution for Purpose, with the Seniors from BM&F. Again, I was there and I remember! Lastly, the news of his passing during the tragic events of September 11, 2001. We could see the Twin Towers." Mark Motroni Sr., 56, was a commodities broker for Carr Futures and followed the same routine every day, attending Mass before going to the office. He was on the 92nd floor of One World Trade Center when the attack began. Mark Jr., 35, a broker for Liubicich Commodities, was working at Four World Trade Center on Sept. 11. "It felt the same as the bombing in 1993," Motroni Jr. said. "The lights flickered, the building shook. I just got out of there. When I was outside, I saw the fire coming out of the tower. I knew my father was up there. I knew he was in trouble." I am a Professional Firefighter/ Paramedic and a member of Ohio Task Force-1 Urban Search and Rescue FEMA. When I heard of the attacks, I was enroute to my in-laws to cut their grass. I watched in horror on television the first tower collapse. I knew that we had just lost a large number of people in that building. I told my Mother-in-law I had to go. I called my wife on the way home to let her know what was going on. It takes me 45 minutes to drive home from my in-laws. In that time the 2nd tower had fallen. I checked my equipment to make sure I was ready to go. By 11AM we got the call from F.E.M.A. that we had to go to New York. I called my wife to come home from work. I called my kids at school and told them that I had been deployed to New York, and I would see them soon. Well on the week of September 11th, 2001 we were in the Cech Republic visiting the city of Prague. I was in seventh grade at the time and going to an Italian school. We had not started school yet so before school started my paretns wanted to take my three younger sisters and I to the Cech Republic. We were suppose to visit there for a week but our trip was cut short after we heard the news of Spetember 11th. My parents tried to gether as much information as they co9uld by popping thier heads in bars trying to watch the news while telling my sisters and i to stay outside. My mom told only me, the oldest of my three sisters while we were walking around a town square in Prague the day after the attacks. I honestly could say i did not know what the twin towers were until my mom described them to me. Once i understodd what she was talking about i was very scared but i was thinking to myself what about all my family in New York? and if that could happen on U.S. soil then what could happen at the bases the military families were at? I was so scared and my mom did not want to frighten my younger sisters while we were still on vacation so she told me not to tell them. After we were done sight seeing for the day we went bac kto the hotel room and my parents tried to understand what the news was saying. We left our trip early to come home and when I got home, it was a new world almost. All the new security poceedures were awful and so long to go through. Just to get onto the base to go food shopping took forever because the guards had to check everyone's cars. When we got home we called my fmaily and none of my immident family were hurt or killed but i had some second cousins that lost their lives and some of my uncle's friends died as well. When school started it was not that big of a deal in the Italian school because i was the only American in the school. I was continually asked if i knew anyone that was hurt and tried to explain to the students what it was like being an American at a time like this. That day will be a day i will never forget because it change my whole view on the world that I thought was somewhat safe. But anything can happen i guess and it effects everyone, no matter who or where you are. There were at least two radios playing in the building, so we heard reports of the first plane hitting the tower on the radio. My boss has a little TV in his office, so we all crowded in there to see what we could hardly imagine. I remember having such a sick feeling looking at the smoking tower, knowing that a whole planeload of innocent people had just died. The phone rang and I headed back to my office to take the call. A few moments later I heard my co-workers groan loudly as they watched the second plant hit the tower. I returned to watch the first replay of the second plane hitting the tower. My mind could not seem to grasp the horror of it at first. Later, I had such a sick helpless feeling as I wondered what mankind had come to for people to be willing to use a whole planeload of innocents as a weapon aimed at an entire skyscraper full of more innocents! The very idea was unthinkable. As the radio announcers spoke of suicide hijackers I wondered at such fanatacism as to give your life in order to commit mass murder. I spent the day, as well as the next few months, on the verge of tears. Disappointed in humanity, greiving for the families of the victims, resigned to the inevitable knee jerk reactions of helpless politicians. I realized immediately that this was not the end of the world. Terrorist attacks have been planned before (and continue to be planned now, I'm sure) but our intelligence agencies usually prevent them. We do have the best intelligence agencies in the world, afterall. Still, even Americans are only human. Error is inevitable in imperfect beings. The flags began appearing on September 12th and as I stopped at lunch to buy a couple for my car, I knew that we were going to be alright. As "God Bless America" and "United We Stand" signs appeared I was ever so proud of our country. Sure, the politicians are reacting with the expected unconstitutional infringements on our liberties, (thus,giving the terrorists their only real victory), but most of us understand that only by standing united and remaining true to ourselves can we defeat terrorism. Americans aquitted ourselves well, our firefighters and rescue workers, even our regular citizens, like those on the flight who found out what was going on and tried to take the plane back, all showed the integrity, honor and heroism of Americans to the world. In actuality, I believe it has never been safer to fly than now, because before, no one could conceive of a highjacker who wanted to use civilian airplanes as weapons against civilian targets, now we know better and forewarned is forearmed, there is no planeful of Americans which would allow this type of tradgedy to happen again. At this point, the newscasters weren't even sure what had hit the building. Was it a plane? but surely it couldn't have been a commercial airliner! a small plane? how did it get by radar? a bomb? It was so much confusion. Ofcourse, I was glued to the TV screen with that deep weight in my stomache as the second plane came out of no where. more confusion on the TV. I needed to talk to my husband. We had just moved and didn't have our phone connected yet. I walked to the corner to call him. It was a glorious day outside. Perfect temperature, little fluffy clouds in the sky. The old Polish men on my street sat outside on the steps and smoked their cigars like normal. I wanted to yell at them to get inside! Turn on your TVs and see that the world is changing before our eyes! but I didn't. I called my husband, frantic. He told me to go home and he would send someone over to be with me. Our friend from down the street with his cellphone came over. He didn't want to be alone anyway, he said. We sat on the couch and and speculated what has happening and what would happen. When the towers fell, the two of us were dumbstruck. I think "oh my God" was the only phrase from my lips for an hour. my husband had to work late, logging people off his company's system in NYC. People he wasn't sure were alive or dead. YOu could see it on his face. We spent the next two days together on the couch watching all the coverage and wondering how we could bring a child into this world. My daughter was born on September 29th, 2001. I saved all the newspapers for her. I want her to be able to go back and read what people were thinking and feeling instead of just watching some footage in a history class. It finally hit me that the city that i was born in and loved was in flames. I was afraid for the nation and it made me think of our futures and the futures of our children. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Though we were nowhere near the areas that were attacked,I was at work, my husband at home, and our son in school. A client called me when she cried out "Oh my God a plane just hit the Twin Towers." Keeping me apprised, she stated another plane hit the Twin Towers. I called my husband who had not heard the news, but immediately turned on the t.v. After being on the phone for a while he said "a plane just hit the Pentagon." I was alone in my office, with tears in my eyes and shaking from fear. Then my husband said a plane heading toward the White House, crashed. I got home, and like everyone in America, we were in shock and disbelief. My family and I held each other for a lifetime that evening and watched the news, our hearts aching for those who lost their lives, anger at those who dared attack this great country, but knowing we would stand tall. Watching the United States unite as one. We were proud of the way different nationalities came together as one nation. We were proud of the way President George Bush led the nation to survival of this tragic day and his search for those who crippled the United States for a short while. Today, September 11, 2002, we pray for those who lost their lives, those families who have lost loved ones, relive our memories, watch the horror from one year ago on t.v. Everyday, we get a little closer to healing, and show the world that the United States will not be defeated. Everyday, I thank God for being a natural born citizen of the United States, thatd my husband became a United States Citizen years ago, and that my son is also a natural born citizen of the United States. We are proud that we are able to tell America how we felt and still feel about September 11, 2001, though our story is small in comparison to those who were directly affected. Tell us your story: I was working in a windowless room on the 6th floor of the Port Authority at 15th Street and 8th Avenue when the attacks occurred. The first indication that anything was wrong was when the man at the next desk received a phone call from his wife in Albany. She was screaming so loudly that I heard everything she said. Simultaneously, the door to our office flew open and a colleague entered and screamed "Oh, my god, I just saw a plane crash into the WTC" and fainted. We rushed to help him and I called my lawyer in Queens on my cell phone. He was in his car and couldn't get a radio station before our phones went dead. Another colleague and I ran to some offices with windows that faced south. We had a straight-ahead view of the WTC -- the Port Authority building is the tallest building north of the WTC. We stood there and watched the next hour's events with horror. I finally was able to get my lawyer again on the cell phone and was telling him that the fire in the north tower was so out of control that there was no way for it to be put out when the building collapsed. I became so distraught that he strongly urged me to leave the building and walk north. Having no idea what would be in store for the next few hours, I went to my desk, filled a thermos with water, walked down to a deli on 8th Avenue where I bought a foot long hero and some chocolate bars and an apple and set out on foot. I was standing on the curb waiting for the light to change at 7th Avenue when I realized that I didn't have to. There was no traffic and there were thousands of people in the middle of the avenues. I walked up the center of 5th Avenue, part of a silent migration heading north. It's hard to gauge my mood at the time -- I was fully aware of what was going on around me, internally commenting on what I was seeing, yet strangely detached. I marveled that something could bring NYC to a complete stop. I was amazed at the number of people silently trudging north -- grimly silent, not uttering a word. I was frightened by the F16s streaking overhead. My heart was broke within me as I heard the church bells all over Manhattan tolling the dead. I remember staring at the clear blue sky and thinking that in front of me it was a beautiful world and behind me the gates of hell had opened. I turned east on 38th Street and walked up Park Avenue toward Grand Central. Days later I realized that I wasn't completely rational -- I remember looking into Gramercy Park, an odd little side trip for someone making an escape, so I wandered a bit before heading north. I felt wary about entering the Grand Central because it could be a target, but eventually decided to give it a chance. At Park and 41st, a U. S. Customs officer stopped me and let me through when I showed him my Metro North pass. I showed it again to policemen at the station door. Inside the station there were men with bullhorns announcing departing trains. I heard one announce a Stamford train, but the crowd rushing to the platform was too intense. Then I saw some men running towards another platform and yelled "Stamford?" They said yes and I ran after them. We were the first to arrive and were able to get seats on the last car. The train filled quickly. The biggest, burliest, meanest conductor was standing on the platform outside our window controlling the mad crowd -- some people were rushing the sides of the train to presumably climb on top and he herded them back into the station. He even yelled at the conductor of our train, who kept opening the door to let just one more in. We left about noon. The train crawled slowly towards Stamford and I arrived in Larchmont at 3:00 (usually a 40 minute ride). Everyone shared food and drink. But, again, there was very little talk. What could you say at the moment? The only conversation I remember concerned the sharing of working cell phones -- people were passing around the working phones so other people could call home. A man across the aisle deserves an award for kindness. He must have had all of the home numbers of his co-workers in memory and called each one to tell the wife that he saw her husband walking up 6th Avenue. When the train pulled into Larchmont, two Larchmont police officers were on the platform and I saw a squad car moving through the parking lot, so that accounts for three of Larchmont's four-man police force. When we crossed the bridge over the train tracks, we could see the pillar of smoke downtown. When I returned to work on Thursday I was stunned to see every surface, every pole, every wall, covered with pictures of the missing. I walked from Grand Central to my office and the sad truth revealed itself. So many lives, so many families crushed. My heart became heavy with overwhelming grief. The tragedy tapped into a bottomless well of sadness. For months afterwards the sadness lay lie smoke over the city, defining and coloring our world with its grimness. One year later, I still am very affected. I thought with each milestone (3 months, 6 months), I would let go of a little more of the grief. And I have -- I've stopped talking obsessively about it with my friends, the dreams are gone and I don't hyperventilate when a bad memory pays a visit. But I finally came to the conclusion that it will always lie like a lump in my chest, eternally my sad companion, because the enormity of the event is like the enormity of human existence, confirmation that we are a cruel species and allow petty tyranny to control our gentler natures.
