Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: ok...It was actually very strange because I never listen to the radio in the morning, but that one morning I did. I don't know why. But I did. So my radio turns on and I'm listening. I expect music and talk radio, but I was hearing people saying what they did as soon as they heard about the world trade towers. so I'm like, 'huh?'. I walk into my mothers room and ask what happened to the world trade towers. She says "What, do you mean the bombing in '92?". I say, "No, what are they talking about on the radio then?" So we walk into the living room and turn on the TV. NBC is on with Katie Couric talking about what has happened. So we're like...huh? And we see what has happened. So were in Cali and have no clue that our country has just gone through. I was 12 and school started 4 days before. The doorbell rings. Its my best friend who lives across the street is there. She's ready for school. I'm still in my pajamas and I haven't event eaten breakfast yet. So I run to change my clothes grab a breakfast bar and run out the door without my homework. When we got off the bus, you could feel the energy of everyone. Half the school was there that day. And between classes no one was late. Everyone walked slowly to their classes. No one talked during lunch about anything else. That includes every single teenaged girl. You could feel the people talk around you. The next day everyone was wearing red, white and blue. If you could buy ribbon you would and it was no where to be found. My best friends mom bought car flags on the 12 and we sold them for $10 each(7 originally, 3 dollars donated for charity). We started with 100 and ended up with 13. Just in Manhattan Beach the support of 'Manhattan loves Manhattan'. It was really cool for everyone to just calm down even in LA. It was just amazing how much it takes for the world to slow down. Some many lives for us to realize the fortune of our own. It was horrific and I opened my eyes for other people and people looked back at me. After that our class went back downstairs and then Mr.Guilda was teaching us Algebra when Mr.Vargo came in the room and I heard him say to Mr.Guilda that something was happening to the twin towers. So then Mr.Guilda asked us all to be quiet and then he turned on the T.V. and then we just saw the second plane coming around the tower and wrecked right into it. All you saw was a bunch of smoke and fire and people jumping of building and people screaming and running away saying "get away from the building". At that moment I didnt know what to think ... It was one of the scariest things I have ever seen. After that it was nothing but drama and everybody was crying. Then parents started to come and get their kids. After that my mom came and picked me and my sister up and she was crying and then we went home and turned on the news. That night I dont think we have ever gotten more phone calls. We had family and al of our friends calling us ... it was really sad. Then like 4 days after all this happened my dad called me and told me that his cousin Jim went to New York on a tour group to tour the Twin Towers for college and then 2 days after the crash he was reported missing and they knew he was in that building. Now till this day they still cant find him. And now it is so hard to believe that it has been a year already since that happened and there is still dirt and building parts everywhere. I cant even start to think of ways to pay my respect to all of those who risked their lives for us. Thanks alot. And to all those who have lost a loved one ... just be strong and I hope we can all get through this! I really wanna pay my respects to the firefighters... thanks soo much! I did not know anyone in the WTC or the Pentagon, but I felt completely stripped of my freedom that day. I had taken my 1 year old daughter to the doctors. As I was waiting, one of the nurses came into the room I was in, and said "Something just hit one of the buildings in New York". She didn't know exactly what was going on. I just figured it was an accident of some kind. The next time she came into the room, she looked like she had seen a ghost. I asked her what was going on, and she said "I think we are under some kind of attack, because both towers have been hit." My heart sank, and I didn't know what to do. I did not have access to TV or Radio. As I was getting ready to leave, one of the other nurses said something about the Pentagon. By now, with child in tow, I was completely petrified. I made it out to my truck, and just broke out into tears. My friend worked about 2 blocks from where I was, and I went to see her, because I was not able to safely drive. Her and her daughters and I were just in NY that past weekend. I couldn't breath, and I couldn't see because of the tears. She calmed me down enough, so that I could drive home. I wanted my family with me, and I wanted to be home. We live not very far from Philadelphia, and I was fearful that we were the next target. I drove directly to my older daughters school. I did not have to say anything when I got there. They got my daughter and we went home. I tried to explain, as best I could to a 10 year old, what was going on. She was not necessarily upset, but instead she was mad !! I made it home, and turned the tv on. I could not believe what I was seeing. I knew that my country, the one that we all have taken for granted, would never be the same. I cried all day and night. I cried for weeks. I was upset with myself, for not appreciating what it means to live in this great country of ours. I was upset with myself for not saying the pledge of allegiance for a long time. I was mad for not really appreciating what it meant to really be "Free". I was angry that someone would do this to MY country. My life has changed in the last year, just as everyone elses, I'm sure. I think about what it means to live in the United States of America. I make sure I never forget to kiss my loved ones every day and tell them I love them. My heart and prayers go out to all of those people who lost loved ones. I pray that our country will stay united and strong. I was at work in a pub when a regular customer walked in shouting turn on the tv, so i tuned in to BBC1 and saw the most horrific site! The 2nd plane was just hitting the WTC, myself and the other customers in the pub were just staring in horror as the news unfolded. We all were in extreme shock, as the pub emptied there was myself and 1 other customer just sat watching the tv, we saw people jumping out of windows, replays of the planes hitting the centre and then the tower collapse! Who was responsible? This can't be an accident. The following days after the attacks, the newspaper was full of the pictures and stories, we even put an American flag up in remeberence and held the 2 minutes silence. I was a senior in college at Montana Tech; I had an 8:00 class that day. We had a small TV in our kitchen that my mom always has tuned into the "Today" show. It was my morning routine to sit down and eat my Cheerios while watching. I remember coming into the kitchen and seeing the first tower smoking. I asked my mom what was going on, and she said a plane had crashed into the tower. I thought it was an accident, until I watched in horror as the second plane hit. My dad walked in just as it happened, and he said "Is that a movie or something?" I told him no, that it wasn't. I knew then that I was witness to history in the making. I stayed home from school that day and watched television. I watched as both towers collapsed and listened as a news correspondent felt the shake in the Pentagon as the 3rd plane hit. I remember feeling so helpless to be so far away. I was so shocked and disgusted that anyone could do something like this in the name of their God. I worked out of my home for a telecommunications company and I was in my home office working and had "The Today Show" on in the background. As the hosts appeared to be wrapping up the show, they were interrupted to bring on a live shot of the WTC on fire. At first, it looked like there was a furnace explosion or something to that effect. Later on, while watching the show and hearing the events unfold, I saw the 2nd plane coming in to the towers. I thought "That must be some type of media plane trying to get closer footage". Then it hit. I started crying and hugged my 2 year old very tight. I had people who reported to me who worked in New York and who were unreachable. When we finally spoke, they relayed the events to me over the phone. My wife was at our daughter's school in a meeting and I called her immediately and told her to bring home our daughter as I already had our son at our home. When I heard about the Pentagon, I was still rather numb to the events but the final crash in PA shook me deeply. The belief that these people actively participated in their own deaths to protect 'an ideal' seemed to me to be as selfless an act as there could be. Soldiers do it all the time.....but with the full knowledge that they could die on the job. These fathers, mothers, retirees, children, etc. had no preparation. It still brings me to tears and inspires me to this very day. The last image I have is from Mike Luckovich - a cartoonist that shows up in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution. His image of the Statue of Liberty with the reflections of the towers in her eyes and a single tear was moving. Also, the rendering of firemen and policemen on clouds at the Pearly Gates radioing down that 'They have reached the top' moved me greatly. I cannot look at either of them to this day with out crying. Because of this, I do believe I appreciate life a little more, stand a little taller when patriotic songs or the National Anthem is played, and I try to take life a little less seriously. What I do not do is try and understand fully why this has happened.....I can never fully empathize with the terrorists or their supposed 'cause'. I can only believe that my God has a greater purpose and that, through this tremendous loss, I can grow as a person and help my children make a difference in this world. We live near a small airport so I was thinking that he ment that a plane had crashed there. When he told me it was on T.V. I was not prepared at all for what I saw! I remeber my mother telling me she remembers exactly where she was and what she was doing when it was announced that President Kennady had been shot. Well I will never forget where I was and what I was doing. I remember it like it was yesterday. I felt the strongest need to be with my children. I went to their school and was asked not to say anything about the bombing and if any students asked questions, I was to remain calm and be evasive. I can't remember a time that it was ever so hard to be calm! I wanted to hold every child there! I found it too difficult to keep my composure and I wanted my own children at home with me, where at least we were together. Not to mention we had no idea what else might happen during that horrible day. That was a day that I never felt so totally helpless. When my children asked, "Mom, are we going to be okay?" For the first, and God help us, hopefully the last time, I had absolutely no honest answer I could give them, because I was terrified inside. I did reassure them that the U.S.A. has the best military in the world and they will do anything and everything to make sure we are safe. They did seem to find comfort in this. We shed many tears in the days to follow and we prayed to God and gave thanks we still had each other. I think everything happens for a reason. Maybe one reason was to bring my husbend and I closer to our children and each other. Maybe another was to teach my children to never take anything for granted, for tomorrow it could all be gone. I was desperate to find work and was having a one-woman pity party. My husband called and said he heard something about a plane hitting the World Trade Center. I figured someone grazed it by mistake. Then I called my best friend (mostly to commisserate)we mentioned the plane in passing. Then the man from the phone company came by to put in the 2nd line for the computer. He worked diligently. I updated him periodically on the tragedy but, he wasn't very interested. I was alone in a new house in a new neighborhood with a complete stranger. My eyes were glued to the television. Of all the horrors I saw that day one stands out. When the first tower collapsed the talking heads were bantering and didn't notice. I started yelling at the TV-"the building is collapsing". Finally, the talking heads heard me and reported the collapse. Another thing I will never forget are the people that dove off the building. I will never forget that sight. When I started heading for the office my partner ran up to me and said "Did you hear" I said "hear what" she replied "a plane struck one of the world trade center towers." With this I walked into the office and there on the tv was the God awful site of the first tower burning. I stated "ah it was probably a really bad accident." Thats when a co-worker stepped in and said "NY city has a no fly zone so its not an accident" Looking up at the tv screen I said "so you think its a what the f was that." The second plane hits and we sat in dismay saying things like "oh my God." I went outside to my unit where my partner was checking the ambulance for the day. I said to her "another plane just hit the other tower." She just shrugged it off (please realize we are in the rescue bussiness so not much surprises us) like it was no big deal. My company sent us on the road to do transports. We had a pick up at a nursing home and while my partner was getting the paper work I watched the tv in my pt room. Then it happened one of the towers collapsed. I ran to tell my partner and thats when it set in. "Oh my God" she replied I had made several calls to my wife leaving messages on the answer machine cause she was alone. Finally she got through to my cell phone. There was panic in her voice and I stated "call your cousin right now and tell her to come to the house to sit with you" Her cousin lives around the corner and agreed my wife shouldnt be alone. As the day went on we began finding out more such as Pentagon and Penn. flight crash. Fear and reality set in. As my wife and I would touch base alot that day the shock was just to much to believe. Around 12:30-1:00pm my dispatcher keys me up and says "base to 964" I replied "964 on go ahead base" 964 be advised you will meet up with the paramedic unit. You and paramedic______ wil be taking your ambulance into ground zero. We were excited not because of the tragedy but because we felt helpless on Long Island. I met up with my other partner. I told him I need to go home quick and get supplies. My wife was crying when I left that day. She was worried for my life and sad for those down there. On the way in the site was just unimaginable. We never made it down to ground zero. We were in Manhattan till about 8:00pm. We returned to base and I was on my way home. On the radio came Tears In Heaven and I had to pull over and cry for it finally sank in my brothers and sisters (FDNY) had lost there lives today. When I got home my wife was happy to see me. Then I called my fire department knowing we have alot of guys in FDNY two people were unaccounted for. Well as days went on we found one guy and he was fine. As time went on we realized we lost a brother (Nicholos Chiafolo)a Lt of our local volunteer fire department.As the days went on so did the tears....................... My dad called and told us about the first plane hitting. So I turned the t.v. right on. No one knew it was an attack on America. Everyone was just saying "what a horrible accident." I just caught phrases of a plane hitting the world trade center and decided to turn on the television. As we watched the images drawing us closer and closer to the horror of the collapse, I was weighing whether to call co-workers. Eventually we all made it to work and spent the day with one eye on the TV and trying to be normal. What I remember most was how quiet it was and how tenderly people were treating each other. Someone came through the office and said, the World Trade Center has been hit. I didn't know what they meant. In a conference room around the corner I saw people gathered, and I went to see what was happening. When I arrived was right after the second plane went into the second building. We were watching CNN. I was devistated and numb. A few minutes later I heard that the Pentagon was on fire, they didn't know if it was a bomb or something completely unrelated. One of my closest friends is a police officer for the Pentagon. As soon as it was confirmed that it had been hit by a plane, I ran to my desk and tried desperately to reach her. I was in complete shock and disbelief at all that was happening around us. One of my co-workers knew how upset I was. She and I stopped in the hall and just lifted a prayer to God. I will never forget how relieved I was when my husband left me a message saying that my friend had called to let me know that she was alive. My heart still aches for all those who lost loved ones, and for all the babies and children that lost parents. I have a beautiful bracelet that I wear to remind me of 9/11 and how our nation lost any innocence it may have still had. I work at the campus tv station and was doing my office hours in the office when I heard the news. The professor in charge of the station came in and told us what happened. The television was immediately turned on and we sat in silence watching. It was devastating, shocking. I left the station and went back to my dorm room. My roommate, Julie, and I turned on the TV and just cried. I thought wow, I wonder what happened there??? Then I heard them say that an airplane had hit the building. I thought what an aweful accident I wonder if the pilot had a heart attack or seizure or something and lost control. Then to my shock I saw the second plane hit the second tower! Then the words were that this was highly thought to be a terrorist attack. I was mortified! The potential loss of life was enormous, and that was minimal until the towers came crashing down. I felt an emptiness and sadness that I can not explain. Then the pentagon was attacked and then I was even more frightened. Where would they attack next? Then the rumors of another plane circling that officials felt was also controlled by terrorists. This plane ended up being the fateful flight 93. I just began praying to God for his mercy and that this come to an end. I must say that since this has happened I have taken a more active awareness of current political and world events. At 27 you really don't think of those things. I had never even heard of the World Trade Center until last September 11. I am thankful to my Lord for everyday he allows me to wake up and breathe and live another day - especially when so many families lost their loved ones and would give anything for that priviledge now. I definetly tell my husband, family and friends more now than ever befroe that I love them and appreceiate them in my life. I don't think I could be as strong as some of these people who have lost so much. My sister-in-law knows a lady in Bay City, Michigan who trains dogs. This dog, Salty, which was the third dog she had trained was owned by a paralyzed and mostly blind man who was employed in the World Trade Center. When the plane hit he told his dog at the stairwell to go home. To get out of there. The dog got caught up in others trying to flee. He turned around came back 17 stories and drug his owner to the stairwell where others helped him down the stairs. Only 30 people after him would escape and survive before the tower collapsed! His loyal dog saved his life and this woman had a hand in that years ago when she trained him. There were so many heroes that dreadful day and I pray everyday for those that have lost loved ones or like Lauren Manning who was just on Oprah this week who have been physically scarred (she had over 82% of her body burned) and are constantly reminded of the effects of that day. I am very proud to be an American and proud of all those who gave of themselves sacrificially and selflessly that day and in the days to come. I personally will never forget this national tragedy. I look to the following scripture for comfort: 2 Chronicles 7:14 "IF MY PEOPLE, WHO ARE CALLED BY MY NAME, WILL HUMBLE THEMSELVES AND PRAY AND SEEK MY FACE AND TURN FROM THEIR WICKED WAYS, THEN WILL I HEAR FROM HEAVEN AND WILL FORGIVE THEIR SIN AND WILL HEAL THEIR LAND." It was my Senior year in High School... It started out like any other morning...My mom and sister were sick that day so instead of going to school i stayed home that day to take care of them ( ironicly if i had gone to school i was going to wear and american flag tank top) so when i stayed home i put on my ARMY sweats and turned on tv and was watching Muarry(TV Talk show) When my phone rang it was my Brother in law he was calling to tell me to put it on CNN that a plane hit the World Trade Center not think his joke was funny i yelled and hung up he called back insisting so i changed the channel and was watch just as the 2nd plane hit i hung up not realizing and stared in asonishment at the tv... i was scared for the people there thier familes and the world i sat watching as another plane hit the pentagon and the 1st tower of the world trade center crumbled to the ground crying being alone cause my mom and sister were sleeping and not know what to think or say to them when they awoke i heard my mom calling and she asked what sick movie i was watch about the world trade center getting blown up i cried and said it wasnt a movie we were attacked and she got out of bed and joined me at the tv as the 2nd tower fell then hearing of a plane being gunned down and another crashing in a penn... field i was scared and had no idea what to think or do I was frech from army basic training and was scared id have to go fight in war its somthing i will never forget because i could walk out my house and smell the smoke drifting down the shore line from what used to be the World Trade Center...There are other things i have seen up close and personal but for me bring back to many horrible memories to even speak of It was a day and even month ill never forget cause the folowing days my unit for the arym was activated and sent away for a year they have since come back but are now again being activated and sent to iraq to fight in this war on terrorism so thing like this dont happen again...... To the families and fellow Americans who have lost loved ones i send my love and best wishes that now in this time of griefing and rememberance you keep your faith and home that justic will come upon those who do such devious acts And to those now who are fighting for freedom in Iraq and those who have lost thier lives fighting for freedom in Iraq I Slaute you For you and then men and women who have died now and in the past and who will die in the future , whether it be police firefighters or our military, you are our heros you are the reason we remain a free country and you are the role models the youth of today need....
