<text>We had just moved to Greentown, Pennsylvania from southern California the Friday before (September 7th), after a long and arduous 10-day trek across the country, that should have taken us only five days. Saturday the 8th we moved into the home we just bought, that I had never even seen before that day. Sunday the 9th we discovered my husband's car had been stolen from the secure parking lot at the Newark airport. Monday, the 10th, I had to call 911 at 8 am that morning and have my ailing 78-year-old mother rushed to the hospital (she was in congestive heart failure) in a town 50 miles away. We had moved to a state I was completely unfamiliar with, and I couldnt even begin to tell my husband how to find us at the hospital. Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I awoke to find our two of our four dogs had escaped into the forest surrounding our home... I called my husband in complete despair at work around 11 am... only to be told, "Margaret turn on the TV, the world has changed today..." I could not believe my eyes. I wondered if we had made the biggest mistake of our lives to move away from CA.

My husband worked in Little Falls, NJ, just across the river from the World Trade Center Towers. As he drove into work that morning on highway 80, he could see smoke billowing from the north tower; and later as he watched from his own office in disbelief the 2nd plane hit the south tower , the 2nd tower imploded shortly thereafter, and finally he watched the 1st tower go down… The company had two people at the World Trade Center that morning (eight hours later they got word they were both okay). Then the F-15s began patrolling the airspace around his building (the tallest building in Little Falls, NJ) and everyone was terrified…

I thought of my brother and nephew, a Fire Chief, now retired, and his son a fireman, and hoped if their departments sent them to assist, theyd be safe. I though his other son, a fighter pilot flying sorties around Washington, DC and prayed for his safety, too…

Though we just barely moved in to our home in PA, that was the beginning of the end of our stay there. Twenty-one months later, due to political developments resulting from 9/11, my husbands company packed up and left the USA and we were homeless for a time.

In the summer of 2003, when we finally had to leave the east coast, I went to ground zero to see for myself, what I could not bring myself to see… and I wept for all of the lost souls and their families. And the businesses and livelihoods so utterly destroyed.

The years have brought us back to CA, and God has kept us safe and restored us to a home, but I ended up losing my mom and those two pups along the way… And every anniversary, I get sad when I remember those moments and the days leading up to them; and a tears fill my eyes once again for all of the senseless loss. I also despair over the fact that folks who werent right there will never truly understand how we could feel so deeply about this single event.

Its the 5th anniversary, and weve decided that, Lord willing, we will move back east one last time in our retirement and stay there, in upstate New York until the end. I imagine it not unlike the Pearl Harbor survivors who feel drawn to the place even after all the destruction they witnessed or experienced. There is a bond for us now born out of what was meant for evil, but God used it for good, to show the world and other Americans how we could pull together if we needed to. We will return to New York one day to finish this journey.

<text> It was about 9:00 a.m. when my wife woke me up saying you need to try and get a hold of your sister and I was like why what?s wrong. My sister is a stewardess for American Airlines but anyway I was like why what?s wrong and my wife said there is highjackers highjacking planes right now and they have several planes. Well we just moved out in the country and we did not have TV yet so I turned on the radio to listen and of course it was all over the radio I ran to the phone to call my mom to see if she heard from my sister I knew she was in Boston already that morning from a flight the previous night and she said no I am trying to call the airlines right now. After hours of both of us calling my sister finally called from her cell phone and thank God she was alright. She was stranded in Boston for about 4 days and me and my wife went to friends to watch TV in horror all day long. We got there as the first tower fell and we all stood dumbfounded not believing this could ever happen. I served 3 years in our military and this made me wish I was still serving to get some kind of revenge. We kept the kids in another room while we watched it all unfold to out disbelief. I hope and pray that this day will never happen again. It bothers me that people think they are heroes killing innocent people. Anyone can kill anyone without them knowing those cowards and that is exactly what they are cowards. my school was cancelled that day just like everything else was cancelled that day. I still believe the world stood still that day not just America but the whole world. Thank god we have a president that is not afraid to go after the enemy and have justice be served on them from us and from god. We just have to stay strong and united and rally around our country.
              Thanks Lowell

<text>Five years later I can still remember everything as if it was today. I still worry that an attack of this magnitude or worse will happen again. I worry about my children's future even more now than before the attacks. I was watching the tributes this morning on CNN.com and everything is still so fresh. Reliving the events that transpired that day do not get any easier to watch no matter how many times you have seen it. The fear in people's eyes, the tears, the crying and screaming, still sends chills down my spine. THey say homeland security is better than ever now. I dont have much faith in those words. My thoughts are they did it once they will do it again. THey got under our radar and got in here to cause their pain and damage they will do it again. Maybe not very soon but it will happen. We will let our guard down again and it will happen. THe pain of that day is still so fresh. The coverage of the days events is still so hard to watch. I wouldnt get on a plane if my life depended on it. I dont want to be in those passengers shoes ever. The people who did it are still out there, some have been captured or killed but there are still followers and believers who can carry on. One days acts have cost so many American lives not just that day but in many days to follow. We have lost American soldiers in the war. All over some one trying to make a point to the USA. Their point was made and will forever be engraved at the sites that the planes crashed, in the lives of the families affected and in history books. The families who lost loved ones are still in my heart and in hearts across the nation. I just hope that they may someday be able to move on from the tragedy and know that their family members are safe in God's arms!! God Bless the USA!!!</text>

<text>i was out there working on a jet with my nightshift
co-workers when the pro-sup came up to us and told us to watch out for any suspicious acitivity becasuse the world trade center has just been struck by a plane and they think it's linked to a terrorist act.

as we came in to the office the TV was on and everyone sat in silence watching just as a couple of seconds passed a second plane struck, my eye could not beleive what was going on.

as soon as i got off work i whent home and called my whole family all over to see what was going on and if everyone was ok.

<text>This is an account I wrote two days after the attack.

Alone. It describes my experience of the World Trade Center attack. I was alone from the moment the first plane hit One World Trade Center until I ran out of the building a mere minute before its collapse. Here?s my experience:

I don?t work in the Trade towers but for the past six weeks I?ve been temping for an insurance firm, Marsh, that has offices both in midtown Manhattan and One World Trade Center. Until Tuesday morning I had never been to the Trade Center office because my job was in midtown. The Friday and Monday before the attack I ended up working with a managing director of the company on a report for a meeting she was presenting at in the World Trade Center on Tuesday. Her assistant was out sick, and I was pulled from my regular job to help her out. The report still needed a lot of work, and I had to rush to get it finished and produced before Tuesday morning. Most of it was finished by Monday afternoon, and it was shipped down to the World Trade Center office. A small part of it wasn?t finished until the evening, and I couldn?t be sure that we could get it shipped in time for the morning meeting, so I told my boss that I would come in early on Tuesday morning to the midtown office and bring it down to the meeting. And that?s exactly what I did.

After going to midtown office Tuesday morning I went downtown with the last parts of the report to deliver them to the 99th floor. I arrived there around 8:40 a.m. and helped my boss get the reports arranged for a few minutes and asked if she needed anything else. She said no and sent me on my way back to the midtown office. I took the elevator down to the 78th floor, where I had to switch to the express elevator that takes you to the ground floor. I caught one right away. People poured out of the elevator, but no one else got on because everyone was going to work, not leaving like myself. I was all alone as I took the elevator down.

Being all alone in the elevator, I did some of the silly things you do. I jumped into the air to see if I would get that ?light? feeling, and I started singing to myself--?I am, I Don Quixote? from ?Man of La Mancha.? I had stopped fooling around by the time I neared the lobby and the elevator slowed and already read that it was at the first floor. At this moment there was a violent shaking of the elevator, and it lurched to a stop. A few light fixtures fell and hung by wires, but the power stayed on. A fine dust was pushed into the elevator by this huge whoosh of air, so I ripped off my shirt and wrapped it around my head to breathe. I immediately rang the emergency button and waited.

The only voice I heard was a computer voice repeated over and over and over--?Your call has been received; someone will be with you shortly.? After a quarter of an hour, a real but squawky voice that I had trouble understanding rang through the small speaker. He would only inform me that it was ?an emergency situation? and that I should remain calm--help would be there soon. He asked how many were in the elevator with me, and I told him I was all alone.

In another five minutes or so there was another shaking of the elevator, not nearly as violent as the first, and just a small amount of dust. I could faintly hear sirens from the outside, and I could barely hear people yelling, but I still had no clue what had happened. Of course I suspected a bomb, but in reality I had no way of knowing. I have a numeric pager but no cell phone. The pager kept going off, letting me know that I had messages in my voice mail.

I felt the need to do something, so of course I tried to pry open the elevator doors. There were actually doors on both sides of the elevator, and I tried to open them both. The power was on, and it was holding the doors shut. I could only sit and wait.

About an hour after of being trapped came the next big shaking. It was more violent than the first, and more dust was pumped into the elevator as well. It became harder to breathe, and the shirt wasn?t keeping as much out. I tried to get someone to respond to my calls for help, but no one would. Now the computer voice just kept repeating its message over and over again, and I couldn?t make it stop.

Another 20 minutes passed, and finally the power went out in the elevator. The emergency lights kicked in. The call button no longer worked. There was an alarm button that would make a ringing sound when I pushed it, and I started ringing in a recognizable pattern like three-one-three and ?shave and a haircut? in the hope that someone might differentiate it from the other alarms going off, but there was no response. After five minutes, in frustration, I tried the doors again, and to my amazement the first one I tried slid open. The power being off seems to have released the doors, but I am faced with a steel wall. I close the door because only the doors have kept so much dust from coming in. I go to the other door and it slides open to reveal a deserted, dust- and debris-covered lobby. I had been there the whole time, and no one had come. I don?t see a single person around, and I start running to one side when I see two firefighters standing in a large, blown-out window. I yell out for help, and they signal me over. I run to them, and one of them grabs me and begins to walk me out.

I look up at the tower when we are a few yards away, and I see the flames and smoke from the top. As I look to my right I see a mass of debris, which at the time I assume is one of the smaller buildings which must have suffered a blast. Only later do I realize that it was the rubble of the other tower. I still have no clue about anything that has happened--not the planes and not the collapse of the other tower.

The firefighter keeps leading me away, and we get about half a block from the building at the corner of Vesey and West. I start to hear a rumble, and then a push from the firefighter, who yells ?Run.? I run on Vesey toward the water but look over my shoulder to see the building collapsing behind me. A great cloud of dust steams toward me, but as I get to the water it has retreated, as the wind was blowing it the other way. I collapse onto a bench and begin to break down. A couple of rescue workers come over and try to get me breathing normally and quickly encourage me to walk north along the water, away from the towers. When I?m breathing more normally they let me go, and I join the massive crowd of people that is moving north, but I don?t know exactly where I?m going.

As I walked in a state of shock, I picked up small bits of information from people walking around me. The plane hitting the first tower and then the second. The collapse of the South Tower and finally the North. I wanted to talk to them, but I couldn?t find words to speak.

I just walked. First along the river and eventually into the heart of the city. At 10th Street I turned east and walked towards Sixth Avenue. I walked up Sixth Avenue until I got to Bryant Park at 40th Street. There the tents for the fashion show were set up, and as I walked past, a security guard emerged, yelling for everyone to get away from the park. People began to panic and scamper. I ran across 40th Street until I got to Fifth Avenue and continued north. I still don?t why we were told to run. I assume it was a bomb threat.

I continued up Fifth until I got to 45th Street and walked back to Sixth Avenue to go into my building. They already had signs up for people who were Marsh employees from the Trade Center to go to the 35th floor, but I went to the 42nd where I work. The receptionist, whom I had talked to just hours before from the 99th floor of the Trade Center, looked at me in disbelief. A few people were gathered around, and as they asked me how I was I began to break down, and they took me to the 35th floor for the company nurse to look after me.

I don?t have a scratch on my body. The only mark I have is a slight bruise on my right arm where the firefighter grabbed me. The elevator trapped me, but it also protected me, and then by a miracle it released me. I was almost certainly one of the last people to get out alive before the collapse. I didn?t see anyone else as I came out.

The thought of those people I know who were on the 99th floor for the meeting plagues me. I?m probably the only person who was on that floor to get out alive. They are all officially ?missing.?

My family is almost all in North Carolina, and my brothers are driving up here to get me. I have had the most amazing support from my friends and my cousin and her husband. They have all looked after me 24/7 for the past few days. Now I?m never alone.

I?ve never had a worse day in my life, but I also have felt more love from family and friends than I could ever imagine. The images and memories are haunting me, and the scars are very deep at the moment. I?m not always able to keep it together emotionally. But despite the horror of it all, there is a feeling of great hope inside me. I must be around for some reason, and I certainly intend to find out.

<text>The following is an e-mail that I wrote on Friday, September 14, 2001.

Subject: close call

To everyone who I have not yet spoken to, thank-you for your calls and
e-mails. I have lost my voice, so I am unable to call y'all back. I am
o.k. and a little shaken up, even after a couple of days.

unfortunately, i was right outside of the wtc when it happened. i was on a
subway with my girlfriend heading downtown when the planes hit the towers,
and had no idea what had happened. the subway operator broadcast over the
loudspeaker that the train was being re-routed due to police activity at one
of the downtown stations. we changed trains to get closer to her new
apartment which is on nassau street, which is 2 blocks from the wtc. when
we got out of the subway, we saw a bunch of people milling around and
thought that there was a bomb threat at one of the downtown government
buildings. then we looked up and saw that one of the wtc towers was on
fire. i didn't think much of it, since i was in la when the first
interstate tower caught fire and it looked the same. then as we continued
to walk south, we noticed that the other tower was on fire and wondered how
the fire had jumpted from one to the other. then we saw the gaping holes in
the sides of the buildings and were shocked. we figured that that they had
been bombed or hit by rockets or something like that. we continued to walk
south, while the police started to clear the area. at this time we were one
block from her apartment. the police wouldn't let us go any further, so we
started argueing with them that we lived only a block away. instead we
ducked down an alley that runs parallel to broadway, thinking that we
outwitted the police and continued on our way to her apartment. thats when
we heard a high pitched sound that started getting louder and closer, the
ground started to tremble and the noise became much deeper. we thought that
it was a rocket/scud missile and that we were being bombed. at this point
we still didn't know about the planes. it was very scary, people were
running everywhere, it was the worse panick situation that i have ever
experienced, far worse than earthquakes or the la riots. at this time we
looked behind us and saw a huge cloud of ash and smoke coming at us in 2
directions. we weren't sure whether we should run or duck and cover. so we
started to run, but the cloud was coming very fast and we didn't know what
had happened. if it was a bomb, where did it come from, where did it hit.
we continued to run up one street and could see the cloud in front of us and
so we turned a different direction and the cloud was both behind us and to
the side. then as we turned again, there was a patch of blue sky so we ran
towards it, hoping and thinking that it was towards the east river. we kept
running till we reached the brooklyn bridge. fortunately, we managed to
outrun the cloud but had no idea what had happened. we walked up the fdr
and occasionally looked back. you could only see one of the towers. as we
kept walking i turned around again and only saw a cloud of smoke. cell
phones weren't working and rumors were rampant. no one really knew what was
happening. we walked up the fdr to my office to use the bathrooms, phones
and watch the news. after that we walked to my girlfriends old apartment at
100 st and cpw, she hadn't fully moved out of it yet. it was basically an 8
mile walk to get home. when we finally turned on the news at 4:00pm and
watched the replay of the towers coming down, it dawned on us that the cloud
we outran was full of glass. if we had ducked and covered instead of
running, we could of been cut to shreds. wow! the next day, we went back
downtown, to survey the damage and get a couple of things from her
apartment. she has asthma, so we needed to get her respirator. we had a
very difficult time getting into the area, since my girlfriend is in the
process of moving downtown, she has no i.d. with that address on it. she
works in tribeca, so we managed to get past the first 2 checkpoints by
showing her business card and saying that it was a work/live loft. after
that we walked made it past a couple of other checkpoints by saying that we
were heading to the downtown hospital to get her a new inhaler, which was
true. once we reached the national guard checkpoint, they informed us that
this was a federal bio-hazard quarantine area and that no one was allowed to
go any further. since we needed to get to the hospital, the national guard
said that nypd may be able to escort us there. while we were speaking to
the nypd a convoy of construction equipment, bulldozers, steam shovels and
dump trucks drove past us, kicking up huge clouds of dust. even breathing
through filtering masks we started coughing, my girlfriend had an ashtma
attack and her inhaler was virtually empty. the nypd officer got his
personal car and drove us to the hospital. she was given an ashtma
treatment and is fine. from the hospital, we were escorted by national
guardsmen the last two blocks to her new apartment. the whole area is
covered with 3-4 inches of ash, windows are broken and rubble is everywhere.
all of the fire hydrants were open to try to keep the dust down. it felt
like a twilight zone episode, very surreal and unbelievable. when we were
downtown, we met a couple of people who live in the area and their building
has a roofdeck. we went up to the deck and could see right into the area
where the wtc use to be. we saw the corner of the north tower that is still
standing, very eery and 7 wtc completely flat and laying on its side across
the street. there were countless firemen and trucks spraying water all over
the place trying to get the fires under control. the smoke and dust was
very thick, you really needed the filtering masks. yesterday, i could only
take the subway to 42nd street, unfortunately with the office at 24th, it
wasn't close enough. i had finally had enough, instead of going to work i
called the gym and scheduled a massage. it made a huge difference and i
feel alot better. today i'm in the office, and it's not quite business as
usual, but there are a lot of people here. i hope that you are well and
that everyone you know in ny is accounted for.
Thank-you,
andy</text>

<text>It was a beautiful day in Philadelphia, PA. At around 9:00 a co-worker called me and told me that a plane hit one of the World Trade Center towers. Thinking that it must have been some sort of private plane accident I went to the CNN site on the Internet. At that point it seemed that everyone around me was aware that something happened and we all tuned in to CNN. Then the other plane hit the other tower and we were stunned. The realization that someone piloted those planes into the towers was staggering. As that knowledge was passed among the rest of my co-workers the first tower collapsed. I remember standing at my desk, holding my head and repeating out loud in a very loud and panicky voice that this "can't be happening." At that point all of us in the office were in a state of shock, fear, confusion, you name it. We were told over the building's loudspeaker to leave the building and go home. We did so in an eerie, almost silent wave of humanity, heading home to where it was safe. I don't think I heard anyone speak on the train ride home. I got home, put on the TV, watched the replay over and over again and called my mother and my sister. I will never forget that day and all the days following. God Bless America!</text>

<text>My husband (Bob) and I had just come home from what we thought was the worst weekend of our life together. We'd just visited a town in Michigan were our youngest daughter had moved to (her Step-Father relocated there) since she lived with her Mother she went with them. I cried the whole weekend, my husband was his brave Fatherly self. We returned home late Monday evening and decided to sleep in;we were on vacation. We were going to fill our vacation with family fun here at home. Spend some time with our grandchildren and spoil our Mothers. Tuesday morning arrived and Bob turned on the television to see what was going on in the world. He suddenly woke me up saying he thought there was a movie advertisement and he didn't think the movie was going to be a success. He had the sound turned down so I could sleep. I put my glasses on and saw the first tower on fire then immediately after a plane CRASH into the second tower. I told him that didn't look like a movie commerical and to turn up the volume! At that instant we both broke out in tears and held each other for the rest of the day. We spent the rest of the week glued to our television and cried. We were utterly numb and heart sick.We made sure EVERYONE we knew across the nation was alright. Prayed that the families directly affected would find strength in God and country. We realized that we'd just lived through not just the worst weekend of our lives together but the absolute worst week of our lives together as AMERICANS and citizens of the world! Thank You for the opportunity. God bless America!</text>

<text>Our officemates and I were doing our normal job in Pentagon room 5A324 when I heard the news. Someone saw the breaking story of the first World Trade Center crash on the news in our Colonel?s office. The word quickly went out, and soon we were crowded in our conference room watching the story unfold. We were debating if it had been an accident or deliberate.

When the second plane hit the World Trade Center, we knew it was deliberate. While most expressed horror at the scene, two of us realized that we were now a likely target. We were trying to figure out who to call to get the Pentagon evacuated, when it happened.

We felt the impact, and we knew what it was. The building around us shook, but nothing collapsed on us. Thank God for the engineers and engineering of the Pentagon. I have no doubt that the original construction and renovation saved a lot of lives.

We immediately started evacuating the office, seemingly for a long time before the alarms went off. We made sure that our office and our neighboring office were both empty before evacuating the building. I was amazed at the calmness of everyone. It didn?t matter if we were military, civilian, or contractor - we were of one spirit, helping others along the way.

Once outside, we saw the smoke and smelled the burning fuel. I wanted to go to the scene and render what assistance I could. I realized though that all military had the same basic self-aid buddy-care training, and emergency vehicles were already responding as well. I was concerned that I could be part of the problem instead, so I made my way to the outer edge of the south parking lot. Though logically I have no reason for regret, I still regret not doing more to help.

Once out there, I offered assistance to a female Staff Sergeant that had fainted. Someone had water, so I offered tissues to use as a cold compress to a nurse that took things under control.

A police officer announced evacuation to one mile away, but people were not responding. I used my command voice to "herd" people out of the south parking lot and beyond the freeway overpasses.

During this action, I was informed that we were released to go home and await orders. Seeing that the situation seemed under control, I started leaving the area.

Noticing that vehicles were still coming down the ramp from I-395, I worked my way up the ramp to the freeway, directing traffic to stop and turn around along the way. When I got to the freeway, a police officer arrived and thanked me for redirecting the traffic.

During my walk home along Columbia Pike, I noticed that several fire trucks and rescue vehicles were stuck on northbound Glebe Road trying to get through to Columbia Pike. I stopped traffic, directed southbound Glebe Road traffic to the side, and waved the fire vehicles into the opposing lane to get through.

Also during my walk home, I rendered assistance to a young mother and her toddler son. She lived near the Pentagon and ran away after the explosion but was now concerned about her sister. I carried her son and walked them to a restaurant where I entertained her son while we watched for her sister to drive by looking for her. A coworker of another office arrived and waited with us. The woman?s sister arrived, and I resumed my walk home.

When I got home, I called family to let them know I was OK. I then called a friend to find out if she was OK. She was shaken-up, but walked to Crystal City, so I told her I would pick her up. I drove in as close as I could and picked her up. We then got into the mass exodus out of the area to get her home.

We then went back to work the next day, with the building still on fire. We arranged temporary workspace elsewhere in the building and set about the mission of fighting the war on terrorism.</text>

<text>I was busy with normal routine work, when my husband called to tell me that the World Trade Center had been attacked. He then called back several minutes later to tell me the Pentagon had been hit. Chaos erupted in the building. One of my employees' husband works at the Pentagon, she could not reach him.
Because my daughter goes to school on an army base very close to NSA, I was very concerned and I drove like a race car driver to pick her and her best friend up from school. Once safely at home, my husband arrived to take care of my daughter and her best friend.
Because I am a healthcare administrator, I returned to work where we held vigil for the rest of the afternoon, trying to calm my employee as we waited to hear word of her husband. Word came at 4pm, her husband was alive and unhurt.
This tragedy spared me close friends and relatives, but it did not spare me my fellow human beings, my fellow Americans. I grieve for all of them, I pray for them still. May God Bless America and shield us from any further attacks from our enemies.</text>

<text>My name is Heather. I am a C.P.A. in Providence, Rhode Island. I was at work on the morning of September 11th, buried in work due to an upcoming deadline. One person had a television in their office and was watching the Today show when news of the 1st plane was shown. We were all saddened by a plane crash but noone thought anything of terror. Then, 17 minutes later, when we were all pretty much back to work, the 2nd plane hit and that's when we knew that there was something tragically wrong going on in the country. We all went to the kitchen, where the television was and watched in horror and disbelief at the chaos that had engulfed New York City. It was unfathomable. Thoughts of revenge and terror raged through my head. The first thing I did was call home and tell mu husband that I love him. I was also very worried about an upcoming war because my brother had been in the National Guard. I feared that an ensuing war would take him away from his family. I was also thinking about how oblivious we were to anything like this happening. Never in a million years did I think another country could invade the United States, the most powerful country in the world. I was 9 months pregnant on September 11th. My baby was due in 11 days. All I could think of is what type of world is my son coming into? How could I bring a child into such a harsh world? I was an oblivious one. September 11th has made me take a lot things and hold them in perspective. Don't let the little things bother you. Tedious things can consume your life. Life is too short and too fragile. Try to live your life as best you can and help others as best you can. My son was born on September 22nd. What I will teach him is to love everyone, help everyone, and be thankful each day you're alive and that you were born into the greatest country in the world, the United States of America ! ! !

<text>I was a freshman in college. In the morning I had choir rehearsal and we were supposed to sing in chapel that morning after rehearsal. We headed over to the chapel and we could hear people talking about a plane crash. Nobody really knew and we didn't really think it was as huge as it was. In chapel the president of our university came up and told everyone what had happened. He cancelled classes for the rest of the day and they had the news playing on the large screen all day in the auditorium. People just kind of stopped their everyday normal life and were glued to the news. </text>

<text>It was quite eiree. On September 10, I had bought a card game involving time travel. The next morning, I was playing the solotaire version, changing the outcome of many important historical events such as the sinking of the Lusitania, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Cuban missile crisis, and the assassination of JFK, when my roommate came home from work and told me that an airplane had hit the World Trade Center.

We turned on the news and watched the reports on the crash thinking, "It must've been some kind of malfunction." When we saw the second airplane hit, it became all too clear. This was not an accident. An attack on the US even more shocking and devastating than the bombing of Pearl Harbor had just unfolded before our eyes.

From now on, people would remember not just where they were when Kennedy was assassinated (except for those of us who had not been born yet), but also where they were when terrorism hit America. I'm sure that even in the year 2051 I'll still remember the image on the television of the second plane banking left in order to slam into a major US building full of American citizens.

The only thing that kept me from falling apart completely in the following weeks was seeing the citizens of New York and D.C., people who would normally not even say "hi" to anyone they see out on the street, jumping in to help in the rescue efforts for people they've never met before. It felt so good to see people performing acts of help and kindness to combat acts of harm and hatred.</text>

<text>It was nearing 9 a.m. and I was waiting for my cubicle-mates to arrive. A few of us had already exchanged morning greetings. I was sitting at my desk when I
heard a loud "BOOM". A giant fireball flared up outside our windows on the 97th floor, facing Tower 1. I stood up and couldn't believe my eyes. I didn't even have a chance to react. Someone yelled "It's a bomb!?, others yelled "It's a plane!". I just stood there wide-eyed and terror-stricken. Then the heat came toward us like a wave. It was immediate and tremendous. I grabbed my bags and started to evacuate, even though there were no alarms. I wandered into the hallway when someone yelled, "Take the Liberty Street stairs". I tried to think where there was another staircase, but realized I didn't have time to waste. By then, people were starting to appear and we all headed down the stairwell we were always instructed to use in case of emergencies. I saw
one of my friends turn around to look for me as he headed down the stairs, but we were separated by the growing number of people. Survival was my only thought for the next 45 minutes. In order to move as fast as possible, I took off my heels on the 95th floor and carried them down. The door opened on the 90th floor and I stepped out of the stairwell for a moment. I saw my boss, another friend and a bunch of others trying to decide what to do.
I was drawn back into the stairwell and continued my journey downward. On the 70th floor, an announcement was being made that our building was secure and we were to remain where we were. Some people continued down, but I exited the stairwell, once again. We were being instructed by a fire warden to stay put. Some people were talking about returning to their offices. I held my hand
on the doorknob to the stairwell, and when the public address announcements ended, I opened the door and fled.
I reached the 61st floor when there was a tremendous explosion. The building swayed back and forth. I can?t even describe the terror I felt as I was thrown
into the wall. I screamed and screamed and screamed. A man grabbed me and held me until I calmed down. The lights flickered, there was white smoke everywhere
and I saw that a large piece of concrete had fallen on the stairway landing. It took several seconds, but people came back to their senses. We all realized that we were not going to get out if we panicked. I tried to keep positive. One woman was praying, another singing. I resumed mydescent. I didn?t know if I had enough time to make it out of the building before it collapsed, because
I knew it would collapse. It was inevitable. The building was vibrating and I ran faster and faster. I hiked my skirt up around my waist and pulled up my sleeves. It was getting hotter and I was scared. I didn?t want to die like this. My cell phone rang and I was actually mad because I didn?t have a second to waste trying to find it and answer it. I did though. It was my husband. I was on the 35th floor, but I couldn?t voice
that detail. I told him I was leaving and said ?Goodbye?. I remember seeing two firefighters heading up and I wanted to tell them to turn around and save themselves. I reached the 20?s?the teens?the 3rd floor?I remember thinking that I still wasn?t safe, and now I would be at the bottom of the rubble when the building fell. I finally exited to the lobby and ran past the PATH train entrance. I looked into the eyes of a security guard I saw almost every day and said ?Thank-you?. They were directing us to exit. I was told to stop running, but couldn?t. When I got outside, it looked like a war zone, but I was grateful to see
sunshine. I cried and I was shaking uncontrollably. I still didn?t feel safe. I needed to walk away as far as possible because I didn?t know how many city blocks would be taken out when the building fell. I wanted to live. I needed to live. I had to for my children. I met another colleague who made it out and we walked, trying to make cell phone calls once we were away from the building. (Closer to the building, we were told to turn our phones off because they were interfering with emergency communications.) I was still barefoot and didn?t even realize it. I put my shoes on when we were about 5 or 6 blocks away. We kept walking and made it to Canal Street (about a mile away) when people began to scream. We turned around and saw debris flying up in the air. It was twinkling in the sunshine. I thought they blew up another building. My colleague was screaming ?No, NO!? and I realized that was OUR building and we were just there. I shook and wept for all the trapped people and for myself. I couldn?t believe I had survived and as yet did not
comprehend the enormity of this event. </text>

<text>I was going to work at Abbott Laboratories, listening to the radio when I first heard of the "passenger aircraft that hit the World Trade Center" as the radio first announced it. I didn't think much of it as I thought, it may have been a small plane that hit the building, I went into work and was relaying the news to a co-worker who hadn't heard of it. As we listened to the radio the news became more clear, we started getting phone calls from friends and spouses, as I frantically tried to find a TV somewhere at work I listened and then started to watch the video feeds via the Internet news channel. All I could do was watch in horror as we watched the first tower on fire and listening to the news broadcasters relaying information. Then came word of the second plane hitting the second tower, all we could do was listen in horror as we came to realize what was actually happening. I frantically tried to call my girlfriend in Michigan to talk to her because I was an emotional wreck inside. As we all stood watching and listening to the news, I was numb, dumb founded as to why and who... In the coming hours and days as the who and why became known, I had such a rage within me, and like a lot of other folks in this country, I came to realize that we, America, are no more safer against terrorist acts as any other country that has had a terrorist act committed against them. I've always been patriotic, but like most all Americans, my patriotism came rushing out, I was angry I wanted revenge, I wanted retribution, but after listening to President Bush and realizing that it wouldn?t come quick I figured I?d do what I can. I donated blood, gave to charity for the victims, and prayed for the lost souls that never deserved to have this happen to them. I display my American flag up on my living room window, and I swore that it wouldn?t be put away as my show of American faith for all to see, to show any would be terrorist that we will never cave in, that the American people will never be bought to our knees as they so much wanted to do on that fateful day. Almost a year later I still get emotional when I think about what happened, it has had such a profound effect on my life and the way I see things. I wish I could do so much more than the tiny bit I feel I?ve done. I, in no way can realize what the families of these people must go through day in and day out, but I hope that life for them gets a bit easier as the days go by, my heart and prayers go out to them, they loved ones are the true heroes of America, and till the day I leave this earth I will never forget???

God Bless them and all of America

Said he just put on the TV set and saw that a plane had hit one of the towers... thought it was just an accident. While we were talking the second plane hit the other tower. I did not have a TV on at work, but the sound of his voice will always haunt me...

The employees I work with then found our TV and hooked it up and just watched for hours and hours the horrow of 9/11. I will never forget that day. Even today, I cry when I see them call out the names of their love ones. I will always cry this day.. it is the sadest day of my life.

<text>When I first learned of the attacks on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon I was in my 3rd period English class. My initial reaction was shock. When the assistant principal came on the intercom and announced what had happened I told myself ?this isn?t real?. ?How could something like this happen?? Everyone in the class was blow away. After the announcement there were a few moments of silence because we all still needed time to absorb what we had just heard. Throughout the day the halls were full of emotion. People were angry, sad, and stunned. As the day progressed and I saw image after image of the blazing buildings I went from shocked to sadden and then to angry. To this day it still seems unbelievable that something like that happened here. I see the aftermath unfolding on the television everyday and I wonder if it will happen again, if it will be worse the second time around, will we get the horrible master minds behind these acts and something like 9/11 will never happen again. Whenever I go on a flight there is that lingering image in the corner of my mind of the plane flying into tower and I?m scared to think that that could happen to me. When you think about history you realize that this isn?t the first thing of its nature to happen. Before 9/11 there were the embassy bombings in Africa and the continuous bombing of England in World War 2. History is always repeating itself events like this have occurred sense the dawn of time and will continue to happen as long as there is always hate for someone else till the end of time. </text>

<text>I was watching TV in our waiting area in our Family Practice Clinic with other co-workers, doctors, nurses, patients, admin personnel, clerks; we were all gasping at this horror in front of our eyes feeling so helpless, shocked, afraid, angry and very, very sad. I think we all felt about every emotion; we were all in tears, even the big guys! We did alot of hugging with each other and many of us called our loved ones to tell them we love them because we didn't know what else to do or if there would be any more time left for life. It was a tremendous, heart wrenching and eye opening experience and we'll never forget watching CNN that day and praying for all the people of the United States. God Bless America!</text>

<text>My story is not that awe inspiring or dramatic but I wanted to include it here. Living most of my life on the west coast and not knowing many people from New York or Washington, it didn't hit me for quite a while on that day. When I heard about the first tower being hit I had just gotten out of the shower and was shaving. It really didn't seem real at the time until I heard on the radio that the second tower was hit. I went out to watch it on TV and woke up my wife and son. While sitting there I started to feel like the morning that President Kennedy was shot. We first just heard reports but it wasn't until we saw more reports on TV and then finally from Parkland Hospital that it finally hit us that JFK was dead. The same with 09/11. The remainder of the day was a blur, trying to work and listen to reports and cathcing a few, occasional glimpses of the TV. Since many of the architects in our office travel as well as our client, we were nervous about those people who were out of town. It wasn't until later that we heard that all of our staff and those of our client were safe did we relax a little. It also made us feel much better to know that our client, Costco, loaded up trucks with food and water from their Sterling, Virginia warehouses and took it to the Pentagon to help those working there to fight the fires and search for survivors.</text>
