My daughter had just returned from spending six weeks in Alaska with a friend. I am an aol member, and there it was....the twin towers on fire. I could not believe my eyes! I turned the radio on and listened as the story of terror and horror unraveled. I went in and woke my daughter up and told her to come check this out..that the World Trade Center had been hit by two planes and were on fire. She couldn't believe it either. I think she just didn't want to believe it....denial. Who could do something of such paramount insanity? Surely there was a logical explanation or some horrible accident on the error of the pilots. It simply wasn't true...........it was an act of terrorism......in the USA!!?? In the heart of our country!!?? I wept, we wept, all of us........all of us Americans wept. The veil of denial had been removed from our eyes. For the first time in my life, I felt vulnerable, even here in West Sacramento. We, the Americans, the country of such great prowess, power, and dignity had been dealt a blow that will ring in the memories and hearts of we Americans for the rest of our lives. A moment in time where time stood still...where knees buckled, hearts broke, families torn. We wept. We wept long and hard. We are strong, though. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work and remember thinking what a beautiful suuny day for September. Then on the radio came a special news break indicating that a plane had hit one of the WTC towers. My day immediately darkened. I remember feeling sick to my stomach because my only niece, Sara Sympson, worked for Deutsche Bank which was located close to the towers. I then began calling my sister and attempted to call my niece. I finally got a hold of my sister who was terrified but said she had just talked to Sara but the call was cut short when Deutsche Bank evacuated it's employees. I left to stay with my sister and to wait to hear from Sara again. When I got to my sister's office she had the TV on and within minutes we watched the second plane hit the other tower. At that point in time we realized what was happening and we both wept & prayed. I prayed that God would send down angels to help the victims and my niece. We then waited for a very long 6 or so hours before we heard from her again. The DB employees were evacuated to Battery Park. As the first tower tumbled she ran/walked back to her apartment on E 95th street scared but not physically injured. My heart aches for those who lost loved ones in this terrible act of violence. More than anything I want to thank all the people who remained calm and helped others to safety and express gratitude to all the families of the people who died attempting to help others live. I know they will hold a special place in heaven. The Bible indicates that billions of people have lived since Adam, but that God knows,loves and remembers the face and name of each person. It was 8:55, the announcements came on early to tell everyone to come down to the gym where we would watch the live cnn coverage. When we got to the gym we all sat down in an orderly fashion. people were too busy wondering what was happening to not listen to the teachers. they turned on cnn and we all saw the north tower burning. all the teachers were wondering would the firefighters put it out? how long before that tower buckles? they all sat in despair, what was going on? well at least this was it. that was all that would happen. the plane was probably on fire and it just collided with the tower right? that was all we could think, after all the tower was very tall, right? everyone in the school sat wondering why? what had happened? this was just an accident right? It was 9:03a.m. we all looked up at the tower then we saw the plane.......this was....a second plane? what? and then BOOM!!! we all saw the second plane go into the south tower of the world trade center. we all then knew, this was war. what is happening? why is this happening? who did this? then we all watched some were crying. people in grades 1 - 5 were taken to thier classes. teachers were greiving. we watched on. then we heard of a plane hitting the pentagon. people started panicing. would they attack Canada? we all were watching the world trade centers burn and the Pentagon burning then we saw the south tower collapse. the people in the gym were extatic. teachers were really worried. they thought this whole time that the firefighters would put it out. we were seeing the injured, people were jumping, people were walking around burned and caked in dust. there were papers and debris everywhere. we then all wondered and worried, would they save 1 world trade center? we then saw the pentagon again. it was burning really bad. cnn started to show the north tower burning again. then, after a while people started to calm down. They would put it out. it had no problem staying up for this whole time, they would save this one, right? yah they would save it. they would have to rebuild the south tower but they would save the north for sure. then the unthinkable happend, noone was prepared for what was about to happend, the north tower of the world trade center collapsed. the principal came on the p.a. and said to keep U.S.A. in our prayers and that this was truly a day of infamy. people werent acting the same that day. some couldnt bare it at all. Tell us your story: My office at NASA HQ faced the south looking over 395 leading into Virginia and past the Pentagon (about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away from the Pentagon). I was in a meeting when a member of my staff informed me that a plane hit one of the World Trade Center towers. Shortly after the same staff member informed me that another plane hit the other tower and "apparently somebody bombed the Pentagon." I recall immediately turning around and looking out my window towards the Pentagon and seeing the smoke from the fire. It took a little while for everybody to figure out that it was actually another plane that hit the Pentagon. In any case, it was shortlly afterward that we heard the news that another unaccounted plane was heading towards DC; presumably to hit the White House or Capitol. Shortly thereafter we recieved the news that Washington, DC was being evacuated. I recall gathering my staff and advising them that whatever they felt comfortable doing was fine, i.e., stay in the building or evacuate and go home. All of my staff chose to leave and I decided to stay. I stayed in the NASA HQ building (mostly on the roof trying to contact my family via cell phone and looking out at the Pentagon) until about 1:30 pm. By then, Washington, DC was almost completely if not completely evacuated. I have several surreal memories of 9/11 in Washington DC, but 2 memories are particularly poignant. The first was looking down from the roof of the NASA HQ building and seeing only miliatary vehicles and police speeding around the streets. At that moment, I knew life in Washington, DC (or in our contry for that matter) would never be the same. It was almost as if Marshall Law had been imposed and we had become a militaary state. The second thing I particularly remember was driving home via 395 South past the Pentagon burning. For some reason the wind was blowing across the Pentagon and over 395, and I remember the ungodly smell of the fire. It was not the smell of a "normal" building on fire. Rather it was the smell of death of many of our beloved coworkers and family members. I'll never forget that smell as long as I live; no matter how much I'd like to forget it. Tell us your story: This was like any other day and time that I would be teaching the character education class at Gabold Middle School #108 in Indianapolis, Indiana. One of the other teachers came in and said something big had happened and we needed to turn on the news and we watched everything unfold. It was a sobering moment. See I have children that were all in the same place, Lawrence Central High School, and I was in a different place. Although I was concerned about my children I began to thank God that I knew that no matter what He was watching over them. As other parents were coming to get their children from school to take them home, I had the assurance that God was going to protect them in my absence. See that is what faith in God did for me. Also, I began to pray for the missing and the families that were going to be affected by the tragedy. I guess it wasn't until later that I began to wonder why anyone would want to do something like this. I told my students that even though people may do bad things it really doesn't make them a bad person. They were doing something that they believed in. The mistake they made is when they brought in innocent lives that paid for their choice. I took it right back to let them see that the choices we make do affect other people and posibly a generation of people. Remember that the choices you make today will affect your tomorrow and the tomorrows of the people that really love and care about you. This was a lesson to everyone. Be careful of the choices you make, someone is always affected. Don't be so caught up in your beliefs that you do not consider the lives of others. We all count no matter if we are a bumb on the street or the riches man in the world. Or for that matter the person somewhere in the middle. Our choices affect our lives and the lives of the people around us and on and on. It's all about choices and consequences. Humbly submitted, Michelle P. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was home on maternity leave (my daughter was born on September 2, 2001)and we were watching the Today Show. All of the sudden they broke into a live news report that an airplane had crashed into the WTC and no one could confirm any details. They were showing live pictures of the towers and all of the sudden out of the corner of the t.v. you could see another airplane fly right into the second tower. It was horrifying to watch not only the plane crash but also all of the terrified people running and yelling everywhere. I didn't known what to do except to hold my daughter and watch in awe. I called my husband at work and he said that they were all gathered around a small t.v. in the lunch room at his factory watching the same thing. I turned the station to try and get a break from the tragedy for a few minutes but it was on every station, every radio station, every where I turned. I know that I wasn't near any of these plane crashes that day, but watching what happened and only having half of my family with me at that moment was terrifing enough, I can't even fathom what the family and friends of the victims have and will always have to re-live. We got the TV out and starting watching it in amazement, only to see the second plane hit the second tower. We were standing around the TV in awe that something like this could happen in the U.S. Our hearts went out to everyone in that area. We stood there wondering who could do this and more importantly WHY! In that were are in the highest office building in Detroit, Michigan, most of the workers left to go home. Some afraid of an attack here and I guess some to get out of working. I stayed but didn't get much work done due to watching the TV. I cried when the buildings started to crumble, knowing that many people would not get out. It is sad that life has to throw us so many obsticles in life. That was a hard way to bring Americans together. Let's hope people remain friendly and some good came out of this tragedy. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was no where near the Trade Center September 11. I was safely entering my business when the attack occured. When my business partner, Willard Smith, came running in, he announced what he had just heard on the radio-the Trade Center had been hit by a jet. At first we thought there must be some mistake--a horrible accident, and then the second tower was struck and we knew. I cannot speak for Willard, but for me, I felt like my life and the lives of everyone in this nation had changed in an instant. There was a deafening silence in the building. A hush, a whisper, from everyone walking the halls as if speaking in a normal tone of voice would somehow be irreverant. Strong compassion of humanity oozed amongst the ugliness of the reality. In Michigan people stood in line to contribute food, clothing, money and help in any way possible. Flags flying from buildings, car antenaes and homes lent us a constant reminder of our country and what it stands for. The early months were strong with patriotism, love for thy neigbor, and an outpouring of care, concern and pride. As the months passed, I noticed another change. We all settled back into our safe routines as we watched "the war on terrorism" discussed on the daily news. For me, I really wish that they would put a name to this war, because it would make it more real somehow. The war is safely tucked away in countries I had never heard of, but are now familar. I have asked myself how this war can be real when it's the people in these small countries who seem to be taking the brunt of it. My heart cries out for them. The real terror to me is the realization that they suffer on a daily basis while my life has seemed unaffected while they struggle to survive. When I look at the news and see the faces, they are the heroes, the survivors. They teach me lessons in strength and bravery. They have taught me to be thankful for what this country means to me. Now today is 9/11/02--one year after the attacks. It is all still there--the threats of continued violence and the threat of what can become if we forget for good. I am thankful and we are graced by the love of others who live lives of terror everyday of their lives. I thank God and country for what I have been given. My prayer is that we as Americans can forgive, but never forget, and that peace will come not only for us, but for those who are not American and live in the daily struggle to have home and family, freedom, and can share in the pursuit of happiness. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I don't rise terribly early, so the news stories were pouring in from New York as I did my morning exercises. I kept the radio tuned to news as I drove for work. I saw the terrific traffic jam eastbound on Rt. 50 at George Mason Dr. at about the same time I realized that a plane had hit the Pentagon, too. I got on Glebe Rd. and headed south. As I crossed Columbia Pike, I looked east, and saw the clouds of smoke boiling up from the Pentagon. It took me an hour and a half to get to my job in Old Town Alexandria, and all the way, the heartrending news reports kept coming- II heard about the second plane in NYC, the towers collapsing, the fourth plane first possibly heading for DC, then missing, then reported crashed. I remember the feelings of frustrated anger and horror. Finally, I reached work. I remember looking up the river and seeing the smoke plume against the sky; then 2 F-15's shot overhead, and my spirits rose a bit. I did no work that day; instead, I answered frantic e-mails from my friends, inquiring after my safety, and sighed in relief as everyone I knew in DC or NYC checked in. There were a couple of close calls- people I knew who worked in the WTC, but had not gone to work that day; someone else who had been scheduled to move into that part of the Pentagon, but had been delayed. No-one I knew died or was hurt; and I think no-one I know lost anyone close to them. Thank the Gods. Eventually, one of my friends established an AIM chatroom so we could share news and comfort one another. I left work early and made my way home to hold my wife. The next day, I drove close to the Pentagon to reach work, and I remember the strong wood-smoke smell... I prayed then as I pray now, to the Gods I follow: may Justice, Mercy, Peace and Freedom prevail- may Justice be dealt to the ones who perpetrated this atrocity; may Mercy be granted to the dead, the hurt, the bereaved and the innocent; may Peace fall on the world; and may we not lose Freedom in this nation, in some futile bid for perfect safety. I tuned my radio into the local radio station and caught the announcer saying "this next song will appropriate for what has happened" and he began to play Horror Movie by Sky Hooks. I wondered what he was talking about and listned to the song until the end when the news came on. The news reader began retelling the account of the events of September 11th. My immediate thought was "is it aprils fools day...they must be playing a joke!" When I arrived at work and saw the images of the planes crashing into the buildings I was horrified. I thought "my God what is this world coming to". I spent the rst of my day listening to the radio. When I got home all I could do was sit down and rewatch the video of the planes crashing and the buildings coming down. It was a very frightening time for me and my whole family. I TURNED ON THE T.V. I WAS DEEPLY SADDENED AND HAD A FEELING OF DISBELEIF ABOUT ALL THAT THEY WERE REPORTING. I COULDN'T WATCH T.V. FOR VEWRY LONG. I GOT READY AND I LEFT FOR MY STUDY. Title A name given to the resource September 11 Digital Archive Stories Description An account of the resource This collection is the bulk of the archive, representing the reactions and experiences of thousands of individuals beginning in 2002. 911DA Story 911DA Story: Story Tell us about what you did, saw, or heard on September 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Well, where to begin? I was only ten years old at the time it had happened, and in the sixth grade at a new school. It was probably our fifth or sixth day of school, things were running smoothly so far. It was probably around maybe eleven ish AM, and a few kids had been called out of class to come home, one at a time but in what it seemed a ten minute or so time frame. Nothing bad happening never occured to me, I just figured a few people had to go home or whatnot. That's what one would normally think. But throughout the day, even more people got called out to go home, three at a time almost. We also were not allowed to play outside for recess, our principal saying "Something is wrong with the lawn." or something along those lines. It sounded silly, and things just got really strange. Throughout the day, everyone around me, including myself, could tell something was wrong. Of course, we where young and wouldnt know exactly what, but it was almost the feeling of a dark cloud. I finally found out some kinds of details by the end of the day. One boy in my class, one whom I was not fond of due to his rudeness, approached a group of his friends nearby. Practically laughing, he stated that the whole Pentagon had been blown up. It seemed as if he found it funny. But I didnt. My father worked at the Pentagon at that time. So naturally, I broke down into a small fit of rage, raising my voice telling him "NOT FUNNY you jerk! My dad works at the Pentagon!". That moment, his expression changed. I could not tell if it was sorrow, but I doubt it was that. But it definetly changed. I couldnt react at that time...but then I actually started to think "What if he's joking?" or "There cant be a bomb here that powerful. The Pentagon is huge." On the busride home, I couldnt move, I was silent, and the air around me felt so thick, because I was so shocked I couldnt breathe. I kept thinking only one word. Daddy. I ran home once I got off the bus. I was greeted by my mom, who hugged me and said "Your dad's okay." I felt so relieved. It turns out my dad was acutally on the opposite side of the building. He hugged me and my older brother, longer and more tight than he ever had. But later, he told me about the Twin Towers. He said it had been a terrorist attack. It just hit me almost square in the stomach. A chill went down my spine, I felt really scared and didnt want to leave the house or go outside. I didnt understand what the terrorist attack meant. However, I was scared of just..something happening again. I couldnt think of what would exactly, but just something. Although I did not experience it first hand, it was still a scare for me because of the fact it happened so close to home, my father working in the Pentagon,and how so many innocent people were killed so fast. I couldnt fully understand at the time why, what, how..but it was still a frightning experience.
