Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Around 8:30 A.M. I could hear my step-dad calling me and telling me to come downstairs. Was he crazy? Did he not know what time it was? I am not a morning person and am extremely grumpy until about 2 hours after I have woken up. I ignored him and went back to sleep. Around 11:30, I heard him calling me again. The phone had been ringing non-stop, but I figured if it was important, that he would come to my room and force me to wake up. Which is exactly what he did. My step-dad came knocking on my door and told me to come downstairs right away. I told him I would be right down. I literally rolled out of bed and stumbled downstairs like a drunk person. My eyes were still half closed. I went into the living room and said, in a very frustrated and annoyed tone of voice,"What?" He told me to look at the t.v. I looked and saw an image of building in smoke. I was outraged. I was outraged that he would wake me up to come downstairs to look at a burning building. I looked at him with dagger eyes and said, "Are you kidding me? You woke me up for this!" And he says, "Sylvia, the World Trade Centers were hit by airplanes." Keep in mind that I was still half asleep and I could not understand why this should matter to me. My step-dad realized this and repeated himself, "The World Trade Centers were hit by airplanes. They collapsed and thousands of people have died. The Pentagon was hit as well. (at this point I was starting to wake up). It was a terrorist attack." Once he said that, I froze. I looked at the t.v again. Images of the plane hitting the second tower was being replayed over and over again. They showed people running from the debris. People covered in soot were shown. The most haunting image that I saw was a man jumping from the building. He was just sailing through the air. That was when I started to grasp how huge this was. My eyes began to tear over. This could not be happening? Who would do something like this? Why would anyone do this? Seeing images of people crying made me cry. I cried for the people who lost their lives. I wondered how scared they must have felt and the thoughts that must've run through their minds. I began to sob when I heard replayed messages from victims who had called their families knowing that they were going to die. That brought a pain to me that I have never felt before. Although I did not know these people, I wept for them as if they had been part of my very own immediate family. Later that day I went to work. I worked at a restaurant at the time, and it was almost completely empty. All of the employees were surrounded by the t.v. in the bar area. No one was speaking. American flags were soon seen EVERYWHERE. People were rallying together in downtown Sacramento and vigils were being held all over the place. You couldn't get away from the coverage no matter how hard you tried. September 11th made me look at the world and at the human race in a completely different way. I had never known that there were people in this world with such hatred that they could commit such a heinous act. Of course I knew about the Holocaust and slavery and all of that stuff, but I had only read about those things. To actually be alive when something like this happens, brings about a different perspective. I looked at my life in a different way. I had never thought about how lucky, how privileged I was to be an American. I had taken so many things for granted, right down to my residence. Now, I am proud to be an American. Not that I intentionally wasn't before, but I had never thought about it because I didn't appreciate it. My heart and my prayers go out to the families of the victims of 9/11. My love goes out to all Americans. We all suffered this tragedy, just some more than others. I was affraid to continue my day with children on my bus, thinking someone was either going to hijack or hurt the chldren in some way.... I live about 45 min away from San Francisco, that city shut the school system down.. I also live in the heart of the Silicon Valley, which to me is the heart of the technology world.. To this day I am still terrified for the children I drive for we have so many different cultures in this area, I do not who to trust anymore, originly I am fron San Diego. I thought it was a hoax played by one of the crazy DJ's. All too soon it became clear this was reality. That night I wrote this poem... I hope it is an inspiration to all who read it: TWO TOWERS AND A NATION SEPTEMBER 11, 2001 The silent stillness of the night breathes deeply with a mournful sigh. The wind whispers throught the empty streets earlier filled with horrific cries. This day began with a glimmer of hope, With sunshine and a chill in the air. True I was nowhere near New York, The Pentagon, or in the field in Pennsylvania but my soul was tortured just the same. My husband is in the army and selfishly all I could think of was he would have to go away. I was getting our youngest daughter ready for a play day at church when the phone rang. It was my husband. He told my to turn on the tv. I asked him what was wrong and he said a plane had hit WTC. My first thought was that it was just an accident. I went ahead and took my daughter to church and was about to go shopping when it was announced over the radio that the second tower had been hit. I got what I needed at the store and got my youngest child then stopped by my oldest daughter's school and picked her up, there were no questions asked as to why I wanted her home. I came home and turned on the tv and cried the rest of the day. As I said my husband is in the army, so I called him to see if he knew anything. He said it would be very late when he came home that night because they had to secure the base. And indeed it was very late when he came home. I don't think I have ever hugged and kissed my family as much as I did that day. My mom and dad had left early that morning from my home to return to their home in Alabama. They don't listen to the radio when they are traveling and have no cell phone. It seemed like forever before mom called to say they had gotten home. I asked her if they had heard the news and she asked what news. I told her to turn on the tv and she did. She had no idea what had happened. We cried together on the phone for what seemed like forever. I know my story sounds very pale in comparison to what the people who lost loved ones, friends, etc. but it is my story just the same. God protect those poor souls who lost their lives and God especially be with the family members of those lost. But most of all God be with us. The blurbs through the radio station "One of the World Trade Center towers has been hit....by something....this just in..." My mind raced, my heart sunk, something was very, very wrong. In utter confusion, I got up to the office I worked in and asked, "What is going on?!". Nobody that was already in the office even knew what was happening but quickly tuned into the radio or internet. Immense feelings of sadness and confusion consumed our office building that horrific day and for days to come. Our governor enforced a lockdown on all the state agencies within the metro area and those considered high-risk, were evacuated. I remember thinking, "I want to go home, I want to be with my family" but I couldn't leave the building. My heart aches still today for every single person that has suffered from this horrific tragedy. May our Higher Powers be with us all. Tell us your story: I remember that I woke up that morning and went downstairs to eat breakfast, my dad had told me that a plane had hit a building but I wasn't concerned. Then he ran downstairs and turned on the TV and showed me that the second plane had just hit. At this point I started to get scared that somehting might happen where I live. My Dad was trying to call my brother, Jack, who was in the army and in Washington D.C. during the attacks. He couldn't get a hold of my brother so then he called my mom at work. After this I witnessed as the other plane hit the Pentagon, at this point I began to become frantic wondering if my brother was in the Pentagon. After this I went to school all the while listening to the radio in the car, listening to the announcers describe the attacks and the plane that was still missing. When I got to school we didn't talk about it at all during my 1st period, I couldn't believe that we were acting as if nothing was happening. Then in my second period my teacher had the T.V. on and we witnessed the two towers fall, till this point I had felt numb, but as I watched the towers collapse I thought of all the lives ending at that exact moment. The emotion that I felt after this was fear, not only for myself but for our country, and the plane still not found. At the same time I also felt angry, angry at the that had done this. Lastly I felt sick, that so many innocent people would never see there kids or their families again. These children would be satined with the knowledge that their fathers, brothers, mothers, sisters were taken away from them by an act of terrorism against our country. The voice of our principal came over the announcements. "Please turn your classroom televisions to channel five immediately, the students will be heading home momentarily." Before this we had heard a distant rumble, but all that was made was somone saying "What was that?", and the teacher hushing him. The television was turned on and the class was full of suspense. I can't remember myself really being old enough to take much note of this event, but it had been a fairly amazing thing to have happened to me, just three miles away. On channel five, there was a news reporter shouting on a balcony with the image of the massive burning structure towering above the others on the horizon. Our teacher gasped and said "Oh my god!" I didn't really know what to think. I knew that building and had been to it before. I listened to the reporter shouting about how it might collapse and the plane flying into it. "Back to you Will" the reporter was out of breath. Now there was yet another reporter in front of yet another burning building. The newsman explained a terrorist jet had slammed squarely into the side of the famous building the Pentagon. I couldn't help but to feel shocked. My mind was racing trying to think of how or why somone would crash their plane to destroy hundreds of lives including theirs. Tears were streaming down my teachers face. This had to be something big. In a matter of minutes my dad cam to pick me up from my classroom. On the way home we could here the fighter jets zooming around the pentagon. I thought of all the lives that were lost and how it would be to be in New York. Thousands of innocent people, and a few terrorists who must of thought it was a good choice to make to sacrifice their lives just to kill Americans. Tell us your story: I saw the initial "puff" of smoke rise from Tower number 1 as the Air Tran jet was making it's initial approach to LaGuardia airport. I wondered what had happened. It was not until I and my daughter were in a cab driving into Brooklyn that we learned what was happening and saw Tower 2 collapse from the vantage point of an expressway overpass. This was my first trip to NYC to visit with my daughter. I was terribly glad that I was there with her. It was my last time on an airplane. I heard a woman reporter saying the World Trade Center had been hit. At that time, it appeared to be a blast of smoke and fire. No one knew exactly what had happened. When I got to work every one was in shock! How could this happen in the United States? And why were we chosen? As the day unfolded I continued to log on to CNN news from my computer. Every time I heard more devastating news, I'd run into my boss' office and fill him in. I work in Sales, and we didn't sell a thing that day. We just couldn't pick up the phone and chat with our customers regarding our high tech solutions when people were dying. I kept thinking about my deceased father who had served five years in the Army; he had come through the Battle of the Bulge with Patton. I'm a flight attendant and I was on a layover in Burbank, CA when my phone rang within minutes of the first impact at the World Trade Center. I rubbed my eyes, and turned on CNN, only to see the second aircraft flying directly into the second tower. At first I thought that this was a bad movie scene, and then I realize that this was real~~very real. Within minutes, my cell phone began ringing as did both pagers. I oversee our EAP (Employee Assistance Program) for the Association of Flight Attendants at Alaska Airlines, and I carry an emergency pager on behalf of this program and our airline. My pager read the first of MANY text pages of updates on cancellations, and eventually the complete grounding of the nations' aircraft. I knew that this was only the beginning. I wasn't concerned with the fact that I couldn't get home~~my concerns were with my brothers and sisters who gave their lives heroically on those four flights, as well as the loved ones they left behind. My concern then turned to my coworkers, and the fears that we were all facing of our occupations and the way that this horrific event has forever changed our careers, and what that continues to mean. Seven months after this infamous day, the fears have not subsided~~yet changed. If anything, as I put on my uniform and go to work, I do it for those who did the very same that fateful morning, not knowing that thier precious lives were soon to be cut short. I do it out of pride of who we are as Americans, and this great nation in which we live. I grieve for the "life" I've left behind, but I live for a future in which I know my freedom will be protected and preserved. I can recall that I had just returned home from dropping my 13 year old off at school and I sat on my bed with a cup of coffee to continue to watch the morning news on Fox as I did on a routinely basis during the weekdays. The news reporters were discussing the fact that a plane had just crashed into the Trade Center. I was sitting there listening and thinking to myself about how could this happen and that the airlines are getting just too scary for me to take a flight anywhere again. My initial thoughts were that it was some sort of mechanical failure. As I contiued to watch I noticed a second plane near the trade center. At first I thought it was a news reporter plane covering the crash sight, then all of a sudden that plane too crashed into the trade center. I gasped "Oh My God! What is going on? It was so devistating to sit there and watch this happen.The next thing I knew I was sitting there sobbing, feeling pain for lives that were just lost. At that instant I think I was glued to the t.v. for what seemed to be six hours. Flicking from station to station trying to get as much information as I could that would somehow explain this horrible set of events. As the day went on my family and I seemed to be in shock and total dismay. At the same time it cause us to be that much more grateful for our lives and families and it also caused us to realize not to take anything or anyone for granted. We sat as a family together and just held eachother in silence. It is so unimaginable that something like this could happen in the united stated. "This type of thing just don't happen here". So we thought. To this day I can only imagine what the families of those stolen lives must be going through.I can only pray that God sooth their aching hearts. If there was anything possitive that resulted from this whole ordeal was that the people of the united states were truely united at that time. Tell us your story: Life as I new it ended on Sept. 11,2001 at 1005 when I recieved a call from my Platoon Sargeant informing me that my unit was on alert. I was a single parent of five and working two full time jobs to support us. Post Office as a mail carrier from 0700-1530 and the IRS as a data transcriber from 1800-0230. I had to leave my children ages 17,13,10,5,and 2 for a year. This was devastating for my children. How do you explain to a 2 year old that you have to leave them in someone else's care? My three oldest dealt with it a little better because I had to leave them for Desert Storm. I missed all of there birthdays and that was hard on all of us. I take satisfaction in knowing that by me going I was making life a little safer for my children as well as all the children around the world. I am very proud of the contributions I have made in the war on terrorism and I'd do it again if I had to. God has brought me home safe and has taken care of my family. HE has given my fiance' the strength to stand by me and wait. Together with my family they took care of my children and they're all well. I drove home on the N.J. Turnpike and could see, firsthand, the New York skyline and the cloud of smoke and dust where the Towers once stood. I didn't yet realize at that time that my uncle worked in Tower 1. When I learned that no one had heard from him, everything stopped. Going to his home and being with the entire family was the longest day of my life. Hearing his kids cry was sickening. Chris was 35 years old with a wife and five kids ages 9 to 2. As I stared at the television in disbelief, I felt like I was watching some Hollywood movie. "Was this really happening in my country?" I thought we were indestructible." Suddenly to my amassment, I watched as the secound tower was hit. Even though I saw the sight through someone's camera, the scene was real, those were real people, and all I could think of doing was crying. No one I knew worked in those buildings, but yet I was amazed by the magnitude of the destruction and the lose of life. But there is still time for more people to... The South Tower came crashing to the ground. Now it was up to the emergency crew to rescue as many people as they could. Around 10:29 am the North Tower fell. The 110-story buildings were diminished into dust. By now, the word American, took up a new meaning. Before I knew it, the Pentagon was struck and another plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, my home state. The acts that seemed to begin as an accident were actually part of someone's plan. "Who would do such a thing? What was this person thinking?" One year later, I am still shocked when I see pictures. Just one month before the attack, I was near the Twin Towers. Last May 11, 2001, I visited ground zero. That area had changed, New York had changed, Americans in general changed. Also in May, I visited Washington D.C. on a class trip. Being an American really made me feel proud. I was living in a country where people were really free and where terorists cannot destroy the spirit that keeps it a live. As I participated in the memorial service at the football stadium, I looked around and saw people that I know that are firemen. Many of them knew someone who was in the attack or that helped to clean it up. During the moment of silence, I thought about the parent-less children, the parents that lost their son and/or daughter, and the people of America that helped pull our country back on it's feet. People may try to destroy America but it's citizens are determined to fight to save the country that they believe in. At 7:10 a.m I watched my son board the school bus and I headed inside to finish getting ready for work. I keep a small TV in my bedroom and religiously listen to the Today Show each and every weekday morning while doing my daily ritual of dressing, doing the make-up, making sure I don't have a "bad hair day", taking care of Honeybear's (the dog) needs and just doing whatever last minute things I always manage to find to do before heading out the door. I was just about to head out of the house & went over to turn off the TV when the Today Show suddenly started talking about the horrible incident of 9/11. I stood glued to the TV and witnessed the 2nd plane fly into the 2nd tower in total disbelief. I could feel myself becoming anxious and wondered what was going to happen next. I wanted to be with my son and called the school to advise of the events. I was assured by the office they would take care of the kids, but we could get them out of class if necessary. Living in a suburb of Chicago, I knew the City could be a prime target and I seriously thought about bringing my son home. I then received a call from a co-worker who asked if I'd heard anything about something going on with planes. When I related the incidents to her,she asked if I could bring in a TV as our office has none. I was able to round up 3 small TV's we have and took them all to our office. Everyone watched the news for the next few days while working. The events that took place on September 11, 2001 will be with us forever. My son is old enough to understand the consequences and impact this has had on our country. I do know this has made us a much stronger country, however, I feel this strength will fade rapidly. Our country has become one of greed for wealth, and those who fit this category will be the ones who lose this strength first. It's sad this will happen, but it will. (this is a whole story on it's own, so won't go there now!) The 1-year anniversary of 9/11 was just as moving as the event itself. While it brought many tears, even though I did not have a personal connection to any of the deceased or injured, it also brought back the sense of pride I have for this great Country. My co-workers advised me today they thought of me instantly for bringing the news into their lives a year ago with the TV's I brought to work. There was a very somber mood in our office all day as we reflected on our thoughts and prayers of the losses so many people suffered. The media did an exceptional job today in bringing back to us the painful reminder of what happened. I cried many times today listening to the stories of the survivors. My heart goes out to every person who lost a loved one or was injured from the horrible terrorist attack. I will continue to pray for world peace so our children and their children can live without fear in this beautiful country. Tell us your story: I remember my son who is in the Coast Guard and was stationed at Marblehead,Ohio on Lake Erie, calling me to ask us if we had heard what had happen. Instanly I turned on the TV and there it was the World Trade Towers burning and smoking. I watched in horror as the second plane hit the second building. I asked my son if he were okay and what this meant for him. He explained that they were on High alert and what ever he was asked to do he would do it. I said good-by and that I loved him. Then I sat and watched as the days events unfolded, the pentagon, and then the plane in Pennsylvania, and I cried. I cried for all the people that I knew were dead, I cried for their families, I ached inside for the American people and wondered how it would effect all of us. I hurt inside for the man who was President, not even in office a year and faceing the greatest challenge any President had had to face. And I grew angry. So very angry. How could any one plan the mass destruction of so many people, cause so much hurt and pain to all the people of America. For the first time in my life I honestly fealt that I could have killed someone, the someone who had done so much hurt. Time has passed, the anniversary of 9/11 is upon us. My heart swells with pride. The terror and devastation of a year ago will never be forgotten. The terrorist who tried to ruin are country and attacked the whole world have done something that they never imagined. They united the world as one. My hope and pray is that from this we will continue to grow as a race of beings who can and will accept all and any for who they are and what they are, no prejudice, no more oppression, no more wars. Someda, many, many years from now we will look back to September 11th 2001 as the day the human race begin it's climb towards World Peace. It will be a long road, filled with pain and more suffering, but we will get there. I have seen more love and courage in this last year then in my entire lifetime. I am proud of my Son and his courage in wanting to protect his country and the world. 9/11 changed us all, not just the people in New York, the Pentagon or Pennsylvannia but all of us. I will say that I was in school and saw one of the two planes crash into the World Trade Center and saw the two buildings collapse. I did not feel anything but hate for the people who did this. The attack happened when I was in Miss Kersch's Earth Science class. It was third period early in the morning. The kids around me could not believe what was happening. I think the people of America were surprised that this happened. I think that we were thinking that we were too feared to be attacked. Well it looks like fear did not keep those two planes from crashing into the twin towers. My self, I did not see the planes hit but I did see the buildings fall. I think the second building that was hit fell first. Ten minutes later the other building fell. How could something like this happen? I wonder if the people in the buildings felt more fear than shock.. The New York Fire department and the police department lost a lot of brave people that day and there were a lot of stories of their bravery. I am proud of the work that they did. Many volunteers from around our area went to help clean up the two-mile path of destruction that was left. It took a long time to clean up and so far everybody that was killed have not been found. Just this past week they have stopped looking for corpses. It was a very sad thing to see knowing that some families will never know what happened to their loved ones. Let this be a lesson to us so that we can be ready for the next attack. Can we do something that will prevent this from happening again? I think we can. He came to pick me up at 8:30 am and the first words out of his mouth were "It has already been a really crappy morning" I hadn't yet heard the news and asked him if his pickup had broken down.
