I pray that God will bless them with peace. I also pray that many people will give their lives to God by saying a simple prayer of: Dear Lord, I know that I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart as my personnal savior. Please write my name in the book of life and give me eternal life in heaven. Thank you God for forgiving me of my sins and for giving me eternal life in heaven. Amen By saying a simple prayer and believing that God has heard your prayer, God will answer your prayer. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th, 2001, I was running about 30 minutes late for work. I had to do the weekly laundry that morning, which required taking the bags down around the corner onto Smith Street to the Smith Laundry. Since I was up early, and would already be a little late to work, I decided to bring my two sons (who at the time were both homeschooling) with me so we could play in the Carroll park. I think we had a soccer ball and were going to kick it around in the back playing field. The first plane hit while I was in the very back of the laundromat, putting the laundry into the dryers. The kids were back tehre too, hassling each other and getting into trouble. I did not hear the first plane hit, becaiuse of the rumble of the dryers. So we went back across the street to the Park, and went back to playing soccer in the back of the park. When we came into the clearing in back, I looked up, and there was a huge plume of smoke overhead, covering a large swath of sky. I noticed that the entire sky was glittering. It was very strange. I wondered what it was, and then as the smoke drifted wider and lower in the sky, the glitter got bigger and bigger, until I could make out that it was individual piceces of office paper. The reason why it looked like it was glittering was that the papers spin and flip and roll as they float through the sky. Within just a few minutes, the paper was snowing down on the park. There were lots that were round or oval shaped, since they had burned their way in from the edges. I saw scraps of paper from Customs Department training manuals, legal invoices, memos, and I picked up some pieces to see what they were. I kept a few pieces of paper.They all had some trace of smoke or burned at the edges. One which was mostly intact, with just some scorching, was a databse schema, with names and recent dates on it, and I folded them into my pocket, knowing that something bad was happening. The source of the smoke was not visible from the park, so I could not yet know what was going on, but it was eery: my first idea was that possibly a semi-truck full of recylcling paper had caught fire on the BQE, which is a few block away. This would have been a manageble local catastrophy, and was the best theoretical explanation my mind could come up with. When the second plane hit, it was a MASSIVE sound- a solid, and hollow BOOOOOMMMM, and the sound bounced off of the buildings all around us. There was a woman nearby, and she looked at me as the sound rolled out. I sadi " That does not sound good." I knew that something huge was happening, and immmedidately grabbed the kids hands, went into battle mode, and got out of there. I called my wife on the cell as we hustled back to the house and she was watching the news, and said the WTC had been hit by a plane. The news hadn't yet registered the second plane, so I figured it was probably just a Cessna, a Piper Cub or something, an accident. I work on Fulton street- only a few blocks from the WTC. If I had gone to work that day, I might have gotten off the subway up at Broadway, and things might have been very different for our family that morning. I have vowed to be late to work as often as possible from now on. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 ? ?In my Son?s eye?s ? by Randy Sullivan As I sat at my desk reading an email I heard the first reports of the attack. The rest of the day was a mask of confusion and chaos that will forever sit as a great weight on my heart and the hearts of all my countrymen. I watched as a plane smashed into the second tower. I watched the towers come down. I saw my countrymen scatter in all directions horrified, as nightmare became reality for them and all that watched. And then the Pentagon, the bastion of defense for the entire world was under attack. And I could do nothing but pray and try to hold back my rage. As the rage turned to tears I thought about my family and those that I love. And I got another email. From one of those I love. One alone in her building in the midst of the attack. With no understanding of what was happening and no knowledge of how to escape. Terrified, she would get out and walk north trying to figure out how to get home. And there was nothing I could do but pray. Co-workers in clusters around television sets watched as the horror continued to unfold and I remained at my desk hoping to get another email from my friend saying she had reached safety. Speculation of the damage and who was responsible continued throughout my workday as my eyes looked to the sky. Not sure what I was watching for but fearful never the less. Numb faces passing in the hallways and finally time to head home. Stopping at my church to spend time in prayer I ran across my assistant pastor who was stunned and confused. We talked and I knew I could do nothing but pray. During my prayer time in the sanctuary I realized that what was happening here was a re-awakening of a country that once relied on God and God alone. But in it?s rise to the top somehow lost focus on what made us a great nation. I prayed a prayer of thanksgiving that in bringing us to our knees as one body that we would stand together again as a nation under God. That we would lean on him for all understanding and vengeance would surely be his. Upon my arrival home I could see clearly the fear in my wife and son. We embraced as a family and walked to the house with my son clinging tightly on my shoulder. He is only five years old but somehow understood something very bad had happened to his world. And my anger grew as I saw the innocence fade from his face as I tried to answer his questions. He knew about the bad guys and he knew about the planes. He knew that the buildings came down and that there were children suddenly without parents. He rattled off something about a "find a parent day" where the kids who had lost their mom or dad could find new parents that had no kids. And I suddenly couldn?t handle the emotions of the day. As I sat and wept, my boy got into his bunny rabbit sleeping bag. I asked him what he was doing and he said he had to go to sleep. I said, it's very early, why are you doing that? And he said just this, ?I have to have a dream to tell me how to save the world?. And there was nothing I could do, nothing I could say but pray. Tell us your story: Local 94 Operating Engineers In Memory of: Local 94's HEROS Charlie McGee John Griffin Jr Dave Williams Veto DeLeo I worked with Charlie McGee for seven years, he was a great co worker and a great friend.I didn't know the other guys too well, but the stories I heard about what these four men went through on that day was simply "HEROIC". OUR STORY My self and part of the crew were trapped in the lobby of 7 wtc when the 1st tower collapsed. We had no idea that a plane let alone two planes had crashed into the towers. We knew there were explosions but we had made it through the 93 blast so we thought it was the same thing, just bigger. We had already assisted in evacuating the building, Thank god every body started evacuating on there own, and then we made the final evacuation announcement on the PA system and like I said all got out safe, the crew and myself stayed to man the building because of all the important equipment running, not knowing we were In any danger (again because of our experience with the 93 blast) and then it got dark and this tremendous screeching, thundering, and Rumbling started!!!And all I can see was the face of one of the crew who happened to being looking out the window of the lobby when this all started. For about 2 minutes I thought we were all going to DIE! We ran behind a wall laid on the floor and covered our heads and Prayed. I tell you it sounded like a missile and an earthquake was coming right at us at the same time. Well thank god it was neither. Well this eventually passed and we did not die. Now we all get up, look at each other, which was kind of difficult because of all the smoke, darkness and dust. We all panicked but we kept our heads, we were scrambling to get out of the building. Half of them went out thru the rumbled lobby, which they have a story of there own. Three others and myself went up one floor because we could not breathe and we knew exactly where the fire exits were on that floor which happen ed to be the Cafeteria. We went to one exit and there was no handle and the door was locked. We ran across the floor to the other side where the kitchen was, opened that door and smoke just poured out of the staircase so we closed that door. Now were running back to the other side of the floor to look out the window too see what was going on and that was useless, all you can see is all this smoke and dust. Now we are starting to get panicky and all we keep saying is we don't want to die!! We just made the decision to run out the smoke filled staircase, we wrapped our faces with wet towels and made a mad dash to the Street. We flew down the stairs literally. When we got out we went about a block behind the building, we all met up and started hugging and I mean hugging and happy to see each other. A few minutes go by and all of a sudden the floor starts shaking and you hear this rumbling and thundering again. We just took off running as fast as we can holding our heads again, but I had to look over my shoulder too see what was happening, I tell you it looked like the devil was coming, a big ball of smoke with huge hands and debris flying everywhere. Well we made it and I just had to share this story. Tell us your story: I was riding to work with my best friend and the radio was on and the dj kept saying that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. My friend and I thought that it was just a small aircraft, a 2 seater, or something like it. It was not even in our comprehension that it could have been a jet, loaded with so much fuel. When we got to work, the rest of the staff was gathered around the tv watching the horrifying news. It was surreal. When the first tower collapsed, it was like I was seeing things. Then the second one went down. I couldn't see, my tears were blurring my vision. I couldn't talk, the lump in my throat was so huge. Then I found out about what happened at the Pentagon. NOW I panicked, my baby sister is a teacher in the D.C. area, and most of her students have parents who work at the Pentagon. I couldn't reach her. Her school was in lock-down, since the plane that crashed into the Pentagon came from the airport only 20 miles away. It was hell. Next came the news about the plane crash in Western Pennsylvania (I don't know how to spell the name of the town). I kept praying, and asking how much more was coming? How many more innocent lives were going to be lost? How many more families were going to suffer? How were we, as a nation, come through this? As a single individual, how are we going to come through this? How are we going to explain this to our children? Now, one year and one day after the tradegy, I am more aware of what is in our "friendly skies". I try not to take life for granted anymore. I am not so much in a rush to get somewhere that I cut people off on the highway. We as a nation stood tall, brave and UNITED!!! I have to say, I am proud to be an AMERICAN! I arrived at office and one of my co-workers told me in the parking lot what had happened. I couldn't believe it, however after entering the door I saw both secretaries crying and glanced at the television in their office. Within a few minutes I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Being a veteran of combat in Vietnam, old feelings suddenly washed over me. However the same strength and faith that sustained me in another war, where the enemy would also cowardly hide and kill innocent civilians also was present. After a short prayer, I called my wife, told her to pray and that I was okay. Tell us your story: I took the train as I had been doing for over a year, ever since my brother had talked me into working in the City, 15 months earlier. I worked for American Express onsight doing VIP Corporate Travel for Marsh & Mclennan Companies. My brother was a SR. VP. and worked at the Trade Center. While on my trip in, the first plane hit before I left the train station. I came out and walked 34th Street to the 6th Avenue subway. When I came up everything seemed quiet, but the second plane had hit Tower 2. As I was going into my building at 6th and 46th, Marsh's Main Office, I got a call from my son telling me that the Trade Center had been hit. I really thought he was crazy, but I said wait til I get in and see. At my elevator bank one of the kids I knew said that it was true. My legs almost went out from under me and 2 kind gentlemen help me to my office on the 25th floor. It was all true. My team leader Janet Dunn came in and we drew up a list of everyone with phone numbers. By 10AM we knew we had lost 11 friends and collegues who woerked on the 94th floor of Tower 1. It was amaxzing how every one just pulled together. We walked to the other side of the building. There was a tv in a little office, I looked. When I turned my head and saw the towers, I could not believe what I was seeing. I knew from where the smoke was that if my brother was there he would never come home again. I lost my brother, 11 friends and 300 people that I helped with travel. I learned that day that life is very precious. Live it. Enjoy it. I have nothing but praise for American Express and Mr Ken Chenault. I was treated with kindness and sympathy. Also Marsh was great. I had people to talk to and a lot of kindness and understanding from them also. My brother John Rig will live in my heart forever. My friends that I lost are also prayed for and missed. Tell us your story: As I sit here on the 1st anniversary, after that horrific day in September, I listen with sorrow and a heavy heart about how all the events unfolded. I remember the shock at how someone could do something so terrible to US the most powerful country in the world. I remember the terror of whom and what was next, was someone I loved going to be a victim, did I know anyone that was on one of those planes or in those buildings? I remember my mother calling to make sure I was at work and not traveling that day and the fear that she most have felt for even the smallest amount of time. I remember looking around our small cafeteria at work and seeing the shock and horror in my coworker?s eyes, I remember feeling the tears swell into my eyes, the silence on the street. I remember the President being a beacon of truth and strength; providing not answers, but assurances that we would redeem ourselves as a nation, we would be safe, we may never be the same, but we would be strong and ALL of us believed him. I remember the sense of unity that we all felt, even months afterwards. What I remember more than anything was the ANGER that we all felt that someone could orchestrate such a horrendous attack on anyone, especially us. How naive and arrogant we all were. Somehow that anger has subsided over the year and many of us are feeling despair and sadness. Well I say the HELL with that I will not be sad today; I will remember with love and honor those men and woman that died for our country. Yes honor, for those people that were once innocent civilians became instant warriors of hope for the World. They are with us all in spirit as we defend ourselves and the World against the most horrific kind of war and terror. The firemen, the policeman, the banker, the secretary, and the defenders of flight 93 that died that day should all be honored in the same manner as war heroes. They are all heroes to me, because their deaths may save the lives of someone I care for dearly. If it weren't for them and our anger about September 11th we could have an even greater disaster. It is horrible that we as a nation and as a people had to suffer such a great loss, but I believe all those lives lost were meant to save ours and that of our loved ones. I am angry that an animal like Osama Bin Laden could do such damage to our lives, but he mistook our strength as a nation. I fear that our complacency as a nation could allow an even greater threat, Saddam Hussein, to bring about the most feared attack upon our land or the defenders of our liberty (our soldiers); a nuclear attack. Please don't forget that anger, I say embrace it, if we don't than there will be another attack and it will be more disastrous than the first and that could take someone you love. A street most of us have traveled down by foot, car, cab, or truck is buried under rubble now - I'm not because of luck. But is it luck to still remain and fear your every step? With my life depending solely on a group of men I've never met? Why is it that some were picked to die and the rest left to weep and mourn? Who makes these fatal choices? He leaves my country torn? And who shall take the blame for this disgusting painful mess? How can they close their eyes to sleep without guilt keeping them from rest? Some say 'why haven't we bombed them yet; made the Middle East a parking lot?' Because that's stooping to their level and guiltless villains we are not. The eagle patiently sharpens his claws and someone will pay for this shit, but more brutality on the innocent just doesn't seem to fit. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11, 2001 as if it were any normal work day. Got up the same usual time, drove the same usual streets to my job, and had my usual cup of hot chocolate with a smooth Marlboro Light cigarette a few minutes after getting to work by 8am. By at 8:45 the nation, the world, came to a screeching holt of shock and for a short time misbelief of what was happening. I happened to be walking past a coworker of mine on my way to the restroom when he stopped me and said that a plane just crashed into one of the WTC towers. I instantly thought, "Wow, that is terrible!", but at another moment thought, "Well, that will surely be hard to repair." And from there I walked onward to my destination. Obviously, what I was told was not really sinking in. Only minutes later I heard about the second tower and how they were collapsing. At this time the looks on coworkers faces along with my own I'm sure, were pasted with shock, anger, and teary eyes. We had a small TV in a back office where streams of people were coming in to stand or sit and watch the terror that was happening to NYC. My own feelings were mixed with fear, anger, and the BIG question: Why? I started calling all my close friends and family to just simply say "I love you" and be sure they were okay. I'm sure like myself, many other people in the Detroit area were wondering if terrorism would hit the Renaissance Building in downtown Detroit or the Chrysler Tech Center located north of Detroit. My brother was located in Norfolk, Virginia at the Naval Base and I worried terribly if he was okay. I tried calling him, but got no answer. I do remember thinking over and over, "This is just a bad movie and it will be over soon." Well, unfortunately it wasn't some fictional story displayed on a cinema screen. This was REAL. I can say it really made me see life, the nation, and the world much differently. The area in which I live and work for many days and weeks after the attacks, were so unbelievably quiet. It was so surreal and eery. You could see and feel how the everyday drivers on the streets were caring more for the stranger in the car next to him than ever before. Drivers were more courteous to each other. But I will never forget the looks on people's faces as they try to go on with their daily lives. I've shed a lot of tears over this tragedy and will never forget the day I woke up on Sept. 11th. I don't have any children yet, but I know when I do this will be history I will be sharing with them. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11, I was at school just like any normal day we were in are classes, when all the sudden the prinicipal had called my name and asked for me to come to the office. When i got there myy school counslear wanted to speak with me, I went into his office and he told me that they were informed that my grandma had worked in the Pentagon's cafeteria. An then they told me about the planes hitting the World Trade Centers. While he was talking I was thinking "Wait my grandma doesn't work in the Pentagon's cafeteria!" and when I told him he was shocked, because what had happened was my mom called and asked if they new what happened, and she told them that if I Jessica Cornell were to have any problems my grandma worked in the cafeteria at our school. We'll they misunderstood and thought that it was the Pentagons cafeteria. So they sent me back to class, while i was walking back I started to cry because of what had gone on, when i got back everyone asked me why I was crying, before I could tell them the principal had got on the annoucments and told everyone what happened, as everyone started to cry the teachers turned on the T.V. and we watched the 2nd plane hit, at that moment we knew that this wasnt going to be an ordinary day. We wernt sent home early from school but when we got home people were lined up at the gas stations, and trying to get home to there families. I can only remember so much because I was in such shock. What happened that day is a day that I and no one will ever forget! An for any one who reads this and has a friend or family member that was in the attacks, I pray and feel so sorry for what happened to you that day. Because no one knew what was going on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 10th I supervised movers to pack up my temporary apartment in Boston and move it to Birmingham, Alabama. After they were gone, I got in my car and drove to DC. I had lived there until that May, so I was excited to visit again. I spent the night with my sister who had just started law school at American University there a few weeks before. On September 11th, we were planning to grab some breakfast and then go visit campus. My cell phone rang - it was my partner, Jay, calling. He was in Louisiana on business. I gave him a cheery good morning. "Are you watching TV?" he asked abruptly. "Yeah, the weather channel. Why?" "Change the channel. A plane just flew into the World Trade Center." I changed the channel and saw the smoke pouring out of the building. I assumed it was a small plane that hit. Jay was in a rental car with a client listening to it on the radio. As my sister and I watched TV I realized that both towers were on fire - and that two planes had hit. Then they broke in live to say that a plane had hit the Pentagon. My sister's apartment was up on Wisconsin in the NW - so we weren't anywhere near the crash site. But it made my blood run cold all the same. I told Jay I would call him back. I called my mother's office in Massachusetts. The receptionist breezily told me she was away from her desk. I remember getting a little loud with her and said, "Find her and bring her to the phone NOW. This is an emergency." My Mom got on the phone. I told that Beth and I were OK, and we would get out of DC if things got any worse. I told her to call the rest of the family to tell them that we were safe. The television kept rattling on about fires on the mall and bombs at the State Department. We watched the White House get evacuated. I had trouble getting in touch with Jay because cell phones were jammed. I called my friend Robb who was a flight attendant with American based in DC and left him a message to see if he was OK. I called my brother who worked in Boston and he was evacuating his building near the Hancock Tower. I wrote in my diary on and off through the day. My partner Jay travels full time for work. We had been living in Boston that summer. He left Sunday night for his trip to Louisiana because he had an early meeting but typically he left on Monday morning early. I realized that he could have been on that flight and I started crying. I thought of my parents who went to San Francisco in September 2000 for my mother's birthday on a similar flight and cried more. I was scared. I was angry. My heart was breaking watching people jump out of windows and run from those falling buildings. It was a very scary, very emotional day. I was enraged at the idea that someone felt that this was an appropriate response to whatever real or imagined grievance with the US. What on Earth could we or any country have ever done to make a human being decide that this was an appropriate response? I know we're not perfect. I know our foreign policy isn't always 100% altruistic. But this? They started playing phone conversations on TV from people on the planes and I started crying more. I called my friends in DC. Robb called me back - he was fine. But he was friendly with the whole flight crew and shocked that these people he knew were gone. I spoke to Jay again at last and he was back at his hotel. I think we ordered Chinese food for delivery. We watched TV for the whole night. On September 12, I left my sister to head to Birmingham. I drove past the Pentagon and started crying again. I drove the whole way to Birmingham that night listening to various NPR stations the whole way. I got to Jay's mother's house late that night. Jay arrived the next morning from Louisiana. I came out of the subway to the street 3 blocks up from the Trade Center, hearing announcements that there as an explosion in the Towers. As I came up from the subway stairs I immediately saw the gaping flaming black hole in the North Tower. People on the street were caught dead in their tracks, just staring up at it. It was a total disconnect. From everyone: ?My GOD, I can?t believe it, I can?t believe it?. Nobody could tell me what happened. I found out only later it was minutes after the second plane hit the south Tower. Almost immediately, I tried to get on a phone and tell Mala I was OK, tell her what I was looking at. It seems like she had the same idea and I couldn?t get through to her. I remember sirens and watching these fire trucks racing by me all converging on the site as I crossed the street. I see these guys? faces hanging on to those trucks. You knew there were people in those buildings, and you knew it had to be a horror show in there. But you couldn?t really digest it at that time. you felt like an observer watching this horrible thing unfold. In the midst of all that horror people are still people. I made it to my office, which literally sat in the shadow of the towers? and yet with all that going on the majority of my fellow workers were waiting for someone to tell them to go home. It wasn?t until the first tower fell that they actually left. They were lucky. One block away I am sure there were too many people who would be alive today if they just said ?Fck this, I?m getting out of here right now?. I didn?t wait, I left, I just didn?t feel comfortable in that building. I had a moment of indecision where as I left the building, I momentarily thought of walking a block over to the complex and get a better look? but a voice in my head (probably Mala?s) told me I was crazy and I made the right decision. If I was my typical self at that moment, I wouldn?t be here writing about it. One block away I was heading back to the subway again gazing up at both towers . The top floors were at that point engulfed in flames. People were taking pictures. Never a thought until the moment that it happened that they would come down. The South Tower, standing right in front of me, 2 blocks south, without any warning just began to crumble. I heard a loud cracking, crumpling sound that echoed through the streets and saw the Tower turn into dust, vaporizing as it collapsed almost straight down floor by floor. I like everyone else stood mesmerized for a time, until I snapped out of and saw that 20 story cloud of dust and debris racing up the street. With police on the street yelling, ?RUN?, I ran heading uptown. I cut over east 1 block hoping to get some protection from a cross street, only to run into the same cloud coming up that street. It was pure survival instincts, no time to think about it, just run. I describe it as a scene out of a Godzilla movie, where you are trying to outrun Godzilla who is right on your tail looming 20 stories above you. I was afraid to look over my shoulder to see how close it was. People running along me were crying. Eventually, heading due north I did out run it. The wind luckily for me and the rest of the city was blowing the cloud to the east. Somewhere around Houston Street in the village I watched with equal surprise as the North Tower collapsed. ? I think that tower is leaning a bit??, I was telling someone, then just like that it collapsed. The City that day was like the day the Earth stood still. The is my best description for it. If the end of the world ever comes, meteor, nuclear war, whatever ?.9/11 was a full-blown dress rehearsal. Everyone was out on the streets from downtown to midtown. People were just milling around in a state of shock. It was better to be out on the streets, with each other. The city suddenly became like a very small town. Someone on the street saw that I was looking for a phone and immediately lent me his wireless from his apartment. I finally got in touch with Mala, who after seeing downtown engulfed in flames, thought I was dead. I could understand that, I thought that everyone I left in my office an hour earlier was dead also? A very strange day. Later on in the afternoon I stood on West Street down by the river somewhere around 14th street, with crowds of people just gazing downtown at the cloud of smoke. Two things? First, the void in the skyline, you just couldn?t get a handle on it (still can?t)? Second, it was such a picture perfect beautiful day?crystal clear blue skies not a cloud in the sky, perfect late summer/early fall temperature, you couldn?t ask for a nicer day. The year of 09/11 has past? I heard someone (a witness to 9/11) say on the news that before 9/11 he never really felt that horrible things could happen to him and after seeing the towers fall he realized it could happen to anyone, anytime. I believe that sums it up pretty well. When I think of that that flaming hole in the tower I gazed at I think of it as a hole that ripped reality right open for a while. What was in that twisted blackness was literally like a window into Hell. The Towers and the complex of buildings and space around them were a world unto themselves. The complex was a city; it was flowing with people, stores, entertainment, etc. If I close my eyes now I can instantly take a walking tour through all of the corridors, stairways, bridges, and buildings that comprised it. I see the places I went shopping in, the people behind the counters. I can stand in the plaza outside and get vertigo staring up at the top of the towers. I am always pretty aware of the architecture of the city around me, and there were a number of places, on the streets surrounding the Trade Center, that I would almost always admire and gawk at like a tourist as I walked through and around them. I would think ? this is amazing, this is, this is New York?; I had this sense of being lucky to be able to be there and part of it all. The summer, perhaps a month previous to 9/11, I decided to go shopping for a book at Borders Books (5 World Trade) at lunch. For the first time in a long time I decided to walk over to the WTC plaza and see if I could find a place to sit down and read, grab something to eat. I hadn?t been there in a while; the plaza was never my favorite place. Too much concrete, too cold, I thought, Typically I would spend my time in the greener parks down by the river. On this picture perfect sunny day however, I found the plaza had become a much warmer, people friendly place since I was last there. There were a lot of nice food kiosks scattered around, tables, benches chairs, etc?I found a nice place to sit down on that day, and was able to read for a while. It was nice?. I distinctly remember feeling the heat of the sun on my face as it reflected off of the steel of the South Tower. As I was going back to work, I decided that it was a nice place to hang out?.. I should take advantage of it more often? that was the last time I was there .. oh well. I watched that same South Tower crumble before my eyes in about 10 seconds on 9/11. It took about 1 hour for all of that to be obliterated, vaporized, wiped off the face of the earth. One minute it was there, the next it was gone. Physical reality around me became pretty fragile for a time following 9/11. When I was re-located to Sixth Avenue, I was adjacent to Rockefeller Center, another bustling open city plaza. Nice places to stroll around at lunchtime, people watch, sit down. In the middle of this bustling place, full of people, tall buildings, life ? I would get this image of the destruction and ruble of the WTC plaza. This reality was just as fragile as the reality I saw crumble. Occasionally I get irritated when I here it referred to as ?Ground Zero?. It was the World Trade Center, it was not Ground Zero. Actually to be more accurate, now it is the big hole in the ground where the Trade Center formerly stood. People can walk by the site, and easily forget what happened there. I have not quite reached that point yet. I still find myself looking up at the empty sky. There has been a rebirth of sorts, what has happened around the site since is an amazing testament to what man can accomplish. The cleanup, the time period it occurred is truly unbelievable. The life that has crept back into the area this summer is a testament to our resiliency. When I first went back down to the area in December it was like walking thru a war zone. Streets were ripped up and blocked off, stores boarded up, dirt and dust everywhere, the smoke from the still burning pile, and the smell. . Now, except for the steady stream of tourists you have to contend with, you could hardly realize what occurred there. When I look at the site now, I see what isn?t there any more. . I wonder what tourists see there when they visit ?I am sometimes tempted to ask one. A common scene: Families posing in front of ?Ground Zero?. Mom or Dad holding the camera ?.?Smile?? and they always do. Its Disneyland ? It?s amazing. Personally, I believe I have gained a greater appreciation of ?life?, a better sense of what is important vs what is not. Don?t put things off; if its a beautiful day get out and enjoy it, take that cruise you been thinking of; get in touch with that old friend before its too late. On paper it sounds trite like a list of platitudes from a feel good book, however getting past that, I think they are words you can live by. Life goes on and that?s good. Tell us your story: I will never foget that day i was @ work when 1 of my co workers came in and said a plane ran into the twin towers i thought it was an accident but then when the 2 one hit i knew we were under attack! the 1st thing i thought about was my familiy knowing they was alright i just had to speak to 1 of them and then all of sudden it hit me that my best friend just got a hostess job in windows of the world and was supposed to be getting married there in 2 weeks. i never been so frightened in all of my life i called her house and got no answer i cried for her and her family like a baby. but i reached her about 1/2 hour later she went to get her children from school! i was able to talk to all of my family and they were all safe. but my story does not end there! I'm a nurse by profession and I'm a nurse in the army reserves. I also was able to see the twin towers burn from the 10th floor @ work. that day when my shift was over @ 3pm i found myself unable to get home. all the highways were closed we were under tight security! then i turned on my car radio and they were asking fo volunters. this was my calling.i was let on the highway by the police with my military id i drove to chelsea pier but they had enough voluteers there they asked if we would go down to ground zero. to wait an treat the people that would be pulled out! but my life forever changed that night no injured people came out we just treated a couple of fireman and rescue workers for smoke inhalation and was sent home about 12 midnight when we left we were all strangers doctors nurses etc black white asian christian muslim jewish but we were all family and i will never forget that day and the terror the strenth the love and the healing! Tell us your story: Jason Liggett It was a quite normal day at school until 2 minutes after the tower was hit my teachers were talking about it not knowing the extent of the damage they did not care much for it until the second plane hit then they knew that something was up and then the pentagon was hit that is when everything went dead quite not a word in the class most of my friends in schools parents work there it was quite real. Alot of my firends had tears just knowing one of there family members could of been there every one used pay phones and cell phones to get a hold of there parents. I called my mom and i didnt get a word out before she said one of her friends was on her way to pick us up from school. Me and my sister waited for her to get there she showed up it was crazy around her I dont no if any of you guys have been in the Mount Vernon area it is close to the pentagon traffic was terrible there were ambulence driving by and swat trucks it was like war was in or back door. I leave on an army base they had guns bomb sniffing dogs the security was really high tec i stayed at my moms friends house until she got home. Tell us your story: As a part of my daily routine in preparing for work I always have the radio on the Tom Joyner morning show and the TV on Good Morning America, mute. I happened to come back into the room where the TV was when I saw the plane hit the tower. Shocked by what I'd just seen I stood there stairing in disbelief. Not until I arrived at work and other co-workers were watching the television in the confrence room did I finally realize what had happened. Although I had no friends or relatives there I was very emotional. To this day I can not understand how someone anyone could do such a terrible thing to total strangers, children people that had caused them no harm or danger. May God be with us all. O-Town, One Heart "never start a paragrah or paper with a quote" my teacher always tells me, today for this it seemed aprropreate. this song has new meaning to me now. One of my favorite songs be one of my favorite groups became both an insperation and a hope through these past days. The account of my day is niether sad nor spectacluar, but it is rather about what happened to me. on September 11, 2001 how my life changed with the world's im 15 years old and am writing from California. the strange waves of events started in my house. i had no account of any of this happening for at least 3 hours. i went to school, me as a 14 year old sophmore, knowing nothing until i was at my locker on my way to 1st period at about 8:15 or so. as soon as i heard, events earlier that morning were embeded in my mind. among were the song and clip of a music video i watched in the moring, and what class i had 0 period. the weather ironically was a metaophor in a way. it was dark and cloudy, the darkest it ever was all year. Time seemed to stand still as i found out. i hadn't seen any images until 3rd period at 9:15., it was the first time. i couldn't belive what was hapening. fear spread over me, and i almost broke down crying as i watched the planes hit over and over. most of the day is blur to me now, classes, but i remember what shows i watched, as though it was yesterday. what lines they said that stood out and what i said to certain people. Normally wild and happy teens at lunch me friends and i stat quietly and talked. i found it better when i talked about what was going, my fears and hopes. i was so worried and afraid that night i had to listen to poeple talking. i wanted to know what went on at every minute. i know that for me and my generation we'll remember everything about that day. parts are blurry, but others arn't. i can't believe it's been a year. it seems to have gone by so fast. Tonight i plan to light a candle at 7:00 the same time as on Friday Sept. 14 in memory. as life goes on, i will forget many things. but i believe that the images and thoughts will stay in my mind forever. i know i still haevn't gotten over it because as i watched TV today after school i felt chills up and down my spine and the sadness returning. i believe that will happen for years to come.
