I sat at my desk talking to my co-worker when another co-worker said the radio announced that a plane hit the World Trade Center. After trying to find it on the internet we turned on the tv, and we found it. We watched at the second plan hit. After the shock of that started to wear off, the news of the Pentagon came. One of my best friends works in neighboring building of the Pentagon. I was lucky, I was able to get ahold of her. Then the phone started to ring busy everywhere you tried. All local phone service was jammed, some cellphones worked. We were all sent home, not much we could do. When I got home it finally hit and the crying started. The faces of those innocent people started to appear, the thoughts of families destroyed, and the sight of murder. Soon the phones started ringing, everyone could get through. Relatives that we hadn't heard from in years called checking to see if my father was okay, it had been long enough that they didn't know he retired from the government. Suddenly no matter what had happen bad or good, everyone was concerned about everyone. Unlike most people at the age of 25 I knew what it was to be an American, as the daughter, sister, niece and granddaughter of war veterans I knew, and it hurt. All my life I have been taught to honor, respect and love my country. And I do, and I felt so violated that someone could do what they did. I still love my country and always will, and the acts of September 11, 2001 will not change that EVER! The terrorist did the one thing that they didn't not intend do, the gave us true meaning to UNITED States of America. I just got back from band , and I walked into my classroom and everyone was watching TV . The TV showed the Twin Towers . There was a plane , and it was in one of the Twin Towers . Then, I was watching and another plane came out of the middle of nowhere and crashed into the other Twin Tower. It was a shock , because I didn't know what was going on. People were trying to tell me , but I didn't understand. It was really weird. Then , they showed another plane that crashed into the Pentagon. All my friends were telling me that there was a Terrorist Attack on New York, and that terrorist hyjacked 4 planes. They killed the pilots and flew the planes . Two of the planes crashed into the World Trade Center or Twin Towers , another one crashed onto the Pentagon, and the last one was found in a field in Pennsylvani. Then principal came into the room , and told the teacher that they had to turn off the TV. The whole we talked about the tragedy. It was really sad , because the teacher told us to put ourselves in the other people's position, and I did. It was realy upsetting .Just to think about loosing someone like that , or loosing your own life. It's really scary. A few days later we still talked about it . The sky was clear. There was no sound of airplanes , or anything. Everyday we had ten minutes of silence everyday. The September 11 tragedy changed everything . A lot of people that lived around me started to panic. They were scared that there was going to be a terrorist in Chicago , they thought that airplanes would crash into the Sears Tower . A lot people still do panic, though it's a year later . 9-11-01 was a terrible day , that hurt a lot of people counting me , and is a day that noone will ever forget. I sat in my desk, half paying attention, half coloring on my notebook. I was wearing an American flag shirt that day, as coincidental as that may seem, and I remember waking up and questioning whether or not to wear it, as it was a little "bold" to say the least. When I got out of my zero hour class, I was walking down the hallway when my friend Stacy ran up to me to tell me the news. She said that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I had no idea how bad the situation was, in my naive mind, I thought it was a small private plane that had barely hit the top of the building...no big deal. An announcement came over the loud speaker telling the teachers not to turn on the TV's, but just to go on with what they had planned for the day. My spanish teacher kept us all on task, but none of us could really concentrate. We had no idea what was going on, and our imaginations were running wild. When I arrived at my second period class, my history teacher had the TV on MSNBC so that we could watch. I remember gasping in horror as I walked into the room and saw the images for the first time. I had no idea it could ever be that bad. The entire class sat in silence and just watched. Looking back a year later, I realize how much this country has changed. Before September 11, 2001, many of us were worried about the trivial aspects of life, like our bank accounts or our social status. After that day, America was different. We were no longer obsessed with the trivial, but focused on the important. People turned to their faith. There were no enemies, only friends. A year later, this country is still a changed one, and I can only hope that we will be permanently affected and never forget how we felt on that day in September. A red flag was raised in my mind - she never called in the morning before... She asked if I had heard yet and I didn't know what she was talking about. She simply said, "Turn on the news." And there it was, that image of the first tower smoking. I couldn't wrap my head around what I was seeing - how the heck could some idiot run a plane into the Twin Towers in broad daylight?? And on such a clear day... Moments passed before the horror of what I was seeing actually sunk in - it is rush hour there - oh my God - so many people - I woke my husband and hung up with my sister. Jerry is a native New Yorker, born and raised in Brooklyn. We had moved to Denver the year before. His whole family lived there and my brother and his family lived there. As we watched, as the whole world watched, the second plane hit and we immediately knew that we were under attack. Where is everyone?? Is my mom in NY on business this week? My brother works just a couple blocks from there, so does Jerry's uncle. His sister lives down there, and where does his other sister work? His oldest daughter used to work in the WTC... We desperately started calling, somehow we got through to Bobby's office - someone answered - he wasn't there yet. That was it - we couldn't get through to anyone else. So we waited and watched the terror unfold on our TV. The buildings fell and we sobbed, unbelieving that this could be happening. I actually took the kids to school and went to work. I am a family doctor and figured my patients might need me. At the office we put TVs in the nursing stations and we all sat around them just watching. I kept making frantic phone calls and eventually found out that somehow we had been blessed - Our family members were okay. As I would hear over the next weeks it was close for several, but everyone was out and physically unscathed. None of us escaped emotionally unscathed. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11,2001, I was in the bank depositing a check from a client of ours when suddenly one of the people working in the bank announced to the entire room that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in NYC. I felt awful, it was not because I knew someone there because I didn't. I felt bad for what I thought was a tragic accident. I felt bad for the unknown number of people in the building and in the plane that had died. I left the bank and went back to my home office where my partner was not in the office but rather upstairs with her eyes glued to the tv. "They say it could be a terrorist attack" she said. I sat and watched as the commentators on tv talked about what had happened. Then as we watched another plane hit the other tower. "There is no way this is an accident now" we thought and heard the annoucers say. Then as we watched, the plane hit the pentagon and I was awstruck because my uncle is a high ranking officer and was in the pentagon, so I thought. I tried for the rest of the day to no avail to contact my family to find out if my uncle was in the rubble. I didn't find out until the next day that my uncle had recently been restationed to Alabama for education. A sigh of relief came upon me but I still was so disturbed and distraught because I came to find out that if he had been in the Pentagon that day, his office was in the direct area of the crash! I did not go to work that day, since I was not feeling to well with the cold I had caught. Around 2:30 pm German time (about 8:30 am in New York) I decided to move from the bed to the couch to watch some TV. And then I saw what I can still not believe to this day. First one, then a second plane hit the two towers of the WTC. I was in instant shock, knowing that my husband, who is a SGT in the US Army, works only hours away from the Pentagon. When the Pentagon was hit, I finally had him on the phone. He then worked for the US Army in a "secret" place not far away from the Pentagon. I cannot say more about this place other than he was in immediate danger. In the background I heard nervous voices, yelling....My heart wanted to stop beating, I was so scared to lose what is most precious to me. He did not have time to talk, nor was he allowed to say anything. He gave me a kiss over the phone and told me that he loves me. Then the phone line went dead.... I went back to the TV and could not believe my eyes. I guess I cried all day long. I thought of all the loved-ones, who would lose their daddys, moms, sisters, brothers, relatives, friends, coworkers.... And then again I could only think of my hubby and hoping he would make it thru the days to come. The next day he called me briefly to let me know that he would have to go to Washington DC to help reinstall phones. My husband is a cable wire installer in the Army. He takes great pride in what he does; he is a person that would give anything to help others. He was honored to have been picked to go to Washington DC. Yet, I was home in Germany, scared to death. He spent one week in DC. And although I could not talk to him on the phone, cause where he was, talking on the phone was not allowed, I sent him faxes with hugs and kisses and funny stories to support him and to let him know how proud I was of him doing his job for his country. Not one day has gone by ever since that I do not thank God for letting me keep the person I love so much. In anger and deepest grief I think of all the people lost and of all the ones, who were not as lucky as my hubby and me. Ever since that horrible day, I cherish my life with my husband more than ever before. Life is too short to worry about little things like money, cars, house....I have learned my lesson to thank God for what I have with me in life and to cherish the love I get from my husband. My heart goes out to all the victims of 09/11 and their families. I hope that they will be able one day to live their lives without pain. I honor the men and women, who defend this great country. I will sign up to be an officer in the US Air Force shortly, so I can do my share. This was my story - a lucky one without a loss. I usually have my morning news show on and leave the house at 8:30am but that day I didn't have the TV on and I didn't leave till 8:50am. As I walked out of the house, I said to myself, what a beautiful day. The sky was blue, the sun was out the air was fresh, I had just returned from visiting family in sunny Florida and couldn't help but think it's just gorgeous out today. I hopped on the J train and started my journey to work. As my train approached "Broadway East New York" station where I transfer to the A train for downtown Manhattan, I heard a man say that the Twin Tower was hit. He said to everyone look out, see the smoke? My immediate reaction was to pray. I thought that a small plane had crashed into the tower due to some pilot error. I kept praying that everything would be ok. Not knowing the intensity of what happened, I proceeded to transfer to the A train. When I reached the A train plaform, I heard a mumble over the loud speaker that the A train was not running into Manhattan. I decided to wait a few minutes and said to myself, "if the train doesn't come in 10 minutes, I'm going back home". The train arrived and I got on. The journey into Manhattan was slow. I had no idea of the intensity of what was occurring at the WTC. Reaching near Chambers St. the conducter announced we were unable to pass. Finally being stuck for about 10 minutes, we went through. I got off at Canal St and walked into chaos. There were people running all over the place, crying and hysterical. Not sure what was going on, I walked towards my building. When I reached Varick and Canal, I looked South and saw the huge hole in the building, not realizing only one building was standing. I stared for a few moments, then went on thinking, I am so late for work. I finally reached the building at Hudson and Canal, when I saw my co-workers running out of the building and crying. They told me the building asked us to evacuate and go back in 15 minutes, some were telling me to go as far north of the city as I can. I still had no clue what was going on. I walked over to a bunch of co-workers and we stood at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. I looked southbound and could see the remaining tower burning. Several people told me what happened but it still had not hit me. I watched in horror and prayed as hard as I could. Trying desperately to call my family on my cell phone but not having any luck, I stayed close with my co-workers. It was surreal watching the building with a huge hole burning, paper, debris flying everywhere and people jumping out. The whole time I was watching the event unfold, I kept thinking Bruce Willis was going to run up the street and save the day... Soon after we heard the rumble and felt the earth shake. At that moment the remaining tower fell right before my very eyes. This was real! This wasn't a joke. Dumbfounded, I began walking northbound, not knowing where to go. Finally stopping at a payphone, I was able to call home and speak with my cousin. Crying hysterically, all I could think of were my friends who worked 2 - 3 blocks from the WTC. Still unsure as to what was rgoing on, I begged my cousin to call my sister and ask her not to fly to NY. People wandered the streets covered in dust and some with blood and cuts. Finally walking towards the Willamsburg bridge, I was able to stop and wait for a phone. People were running around, screaming. Telling me this was no joke, to get off the island. One woman told me that her friend works for the FBI and told her to get out! It's serious! Do not stay! Frantic, I was not sure what to do. I was crying, scared, and in shock. I decided my only way out of Manhattan was to walk over the bridge. The thought scared me as thoughts of bridge bombings came over me. Somehow I found the strength and walked over the bridge, turning back to look at that island, all I can see was smoke and tons of people ahead and behind me. It was surreal, almost like the crossing of the Red Sea in Moses. At the end of the bridge, people who normally would not say a word to one another were out helping eachother, distributing water to those who walked over. Helping eachother find their way home, offering places for others to stay. After several hours I made it close to home. My cousin picked me up and we could not speak, all we could do was cry and be Thankful that we were ok. The first thing I did was shower, I thought I can wash it all away, every thought of the event. I took a moment to myself and turned on the TV. All I could do was cry. I called my family and friends and was thankful that everyone was ok. I was fortunate to escape the mayhem that occurred that day, but felt guilty that others had not. The serevity of what happened that day had not hit me until I was able to watch the news and get the full scope (Pentagon and the other plane that crashed in the Penn. field). All kinds of emotions overcame me from fear to hatred. The next several days/weeks were the hardest as I prayed for survivors. I prayed that what I witnessed was all just a bad dream. Tears could not stop flowing from my eyes. I feared the end of the world. Not being able to see my family again. Our office was shut down the next few days. When the streets below 14th Sts. were opened again and it was time to go back to work. I was could not bring myself to head out to Manhattan. I struggle to hop on the train. It's now almost a year and I still can't get the events out of my head! I jump at the sound of sirens, I refuse to wear the clothes I wore that day and I can't say as I leave the house "oh what a beautiful day". I'm afraid if I did any of those, something bad may happen again. Everyday, I am reminded of what has happened and everyday I look southwards to see if the Towers are there. I have been to therapy many times and had been able to talk to people about what had happened, however I don't think I can ever erase the images or the sadness that is embedded in me. I pray that we will never ever forget what happened and that we will be there to help one another at all times. I am still overwhelmed by thoughts from people all around the world. As the kids were getting on the bus they were asking me if I had heard what had happened. I turned the volume up on the radio and I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was 9:35am when I got home and put on the TV to see what was going on. I called my parents to see where my brother was as he is an EMT with the Fire Department and found out he was home asleep. I woke my husband up as he is Airport Security out by us and told him I thought he should get up as two planes just flew into the World Trade Center buildings and I had a feeling he was going to be called in real soon. Within 10 minutes they called him to come to work. When the Towers fell I couldn't believe what I had witnessed. All I kept thinking was all the people who were in those buildings when they fell. My heart sank and I had a hard time being able to function. I felt terror that radiated from my throat to the pit of my stomach. When I picked up another student on the way to school, she had not heard and we both stayed silent the rest of the way. As the Pentigon was struck, I knew my brother worked there and did not know if he was alive or not. I emailed him three times from the college in hopes of some news of him being alive. The college closed it's doors that day and all Televisions ands big screens were tuned into the events of this tragedy. We had some events with some students that are from Iran, attending college and I never saw any students being mistreated, most of us did not know what to say to them. A local store owner got his store burned because he was Iranian and some creaps got it into his head that it was his fault. This is outrageous behavior and places those idiots on the same level as the terriorist. That day seemed like Mother nature was silenced as I noticed the air was void of any planes. My supervisor could not make work for a few days, she was flying over Florida and her plane was diverted to another state. It was about 3pm mountain time when I heard from him and was informed that he was saved due to the remodeling project there and had been sent to Crystal City until the project was finished. Later stories came in that this remodeling project had been moved to this earlier date and would have been done later. My brother's office had been totally demolished and had he been there at that time, I would have lost him that day. don't tell me that God is not real. She told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center in New York and that it was believed to be a terrorist act. My friends and me were in Earth Science just hanging out and talking because our teacher was not ready to start class. Then a teacher came in and said that a plane had just hit the World Trade Tower. I had no clue what the World Trade Centers were. Now after the planes have hit them I realize how important they were. The news showed live pictures of Ground Zero. The pile where the buildings used to be is all smoke; you could not see anything because of all the smoke. I had heard that a plane hit the two Worlds Trades Towers, Pentagon and the 7th tower of the other building falling. I went and turned on the television I saw people falling or jumping out the buildings. There was smoke and fire in the sky, buildings falling everywhere they landed very hard to the ground. The people in the buildings are very hurt, sick, and don?t know what?s going on. People died and they don?t even know why. The people that did live are very lucky because people who did die had to go through attack by the terrorists who were Muslim extremist that they didn?t know who actually did it. People were very upset about the whole thing. People that did this need to learn how to be a person and get something out of their lives and not destroy our country. If they wanted to talk about their problems or what they have against us they should of tried to talk to us about it. Yes! They sent signs of warnings, but if they would of talked to something or us we could of explained. These people that died were working hard. They were innocent they had no right to die, suffer, get hurt. These people that did do it have problems because it?s not our fault. If they have problems with the government they could of talked to them about it. They shouldn?t have to take it out on the U.S people. Everyone was watching the news to see if his or her relatives were hurt or died. That would be very upsetting and sad if I found out that a relative if someone or mine I loved had died. The night before, my boyfriend had taken me out to an authentic Mexican restaurant I had never been to before to celebrate my new job. The weather of the day was perfect; I felt so much love and hope. I enjoyed the commute along a blue and shining Lake Erie, listening to routine morning news on the local NPR affiliate, WCPN. I arrived at work very early, shortly after 8:30 AM. Just before 9:00 AM, the phone rang in the quiet, empty office. The office coordinator's husband was calling. He said, "Janet might hear on the radio that a plane might have flown into the building where I was supposed to be meeting today. Please tell her that I wasn't in it." The words he spoke conveyed no meaning. I thought it was a practical joke on an over-protective wife. Until I found Janet at her desk, crying. Cynthia had come into the office and instantly switched on the portable radio by her desk. By that time, the second plane had hit the twin towers, and we all knew this was no joke. I had to go to a meeting, a training session on how to show hospitality to guests at free community meals for the hungry. This meeting was filled with church-, mosque- and temple-going Americans who spend their days trying to alleviate the suffering of others. None of their minds were on learning hospitality. When I left the meeting and switched on my car radio, I felt sure that I was dreaming, or that someone had accidentally stuck a tape of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" in. A plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Another plane had circled over Cleveland, then crashed in Pennsylvania. As I listened, the twin towers collapsed. I grew up in Syracuse, NY and have family in northern New Jersey. I could see the destruction in my mind's eye. At the office, I shot out emails to family and friends in NYC. I wrote to a friend who had old Navy buddies who worked at the Pentagon. As soon as I could get home, I called my parents to see if they had word from my uncle, aunt and cousin. When I had checked up on everyone, my best friend, relatives, in-laws, and so on, and found that I had lost no one, relief spread over me. The worst that had happened was that my brother's girlfriend's family had to spend the night in Manhattan, since the bridges were closed to take them home, and my cousin was stuck on a bridge on her way home from school. Inconveniences. Those I loved were intact. I felt giddy. The fact that a national tragedy had occurred did not enter into my mind for several minutes. Then, my boyfriend called. He said that my parish was hosting an interfaith prayer service. He never goes to church. I said I would be there. In the pew with my boyfriend, his son and his son's mother, the oddness of this little family circle did not matter. We were lost together. We held hands and prayed the Lord's Prayer. We hugged and kissed to share peace. Peace. PEACE. The one thing that I wanted at the end of this long day. We sang "America, the Beautiful" together, and tears rolled down my face. I sobbed for the country that I love, for the many who had died, for the heroes who had run into a burning building to save others. I cried for Robbie, an eleven-year-old boy who had to grow up in this world. I couldn't stop crying when I thought about the young kids just out of high school, many urban African Americans just looking for a better chance, who would die in the senseless wars I feared would follow. I wept for the innocents in countries far away who were about to die for something they had no part in. I cried for the liberties I was afraid would be threatened. I cried hard for the road ahead of us. On the way home, I held my boyfriend's hand. We sat down on the swing on his porch, in the dark, and held each other. We each recalled how we had protested the unnecessary violence of conflicts past, he the Vietnam War and I the Persian Gulf conflict. We tried to steal ourselves up to stand against the tide of revenge, to stand for peace and for the America I love and believe in. But we both prayed, "May it not be so ..." It was time for me to go to school. My first class of the day was at 11:00am. So I proceeded down stairs around 9:45 to brush my teeth. With my toothbrush in hand, I said good morning to my boyfriend?s mother, whom I had been living with at this time. It seemed like any other morning. Then the phone rang. I heard her saying ?No way? as she frantically flipped through the channels on the television. I assumed that her husband had called her to tell her that someone they knew was on TV, this happened often because they are entertainers. I waited there behind her to see what she was looking for. Then she turned to me, and I will never forget her words, ? We are being attacked?. I sat on the coach, and was glued to the TV, and we saw the first tower in flames. As we watched in horror, not thinking that anything could get any worse, we saw the second building get struck. It was hard for me to watch, but even harder for me to turn away. I sat with my head in my hands crying my eyes out. How could a human being do something like this? I called my mother, and we just cried to each other on the phone. She told me to try to stay calm, and that if anything were to happen here that she would get to me no matter what. Needless to say, I didn?t go to school that day. I sat there watching TV all day. Watching those horrible videos over and over again. I felt like I was there. I have a lot of family up in New York, and all I could think about was where were they while all of this was happening? Were they amongst all of the people scurrying across the Washington Bridge? Everything closed here in Orlando, even the theme parks. That is everywhere except for the place I worked. Its called Wonder Works. I was sure that they would be closed, but around 4:00pm I called my manager, and she told me that we would still have to work. I figured by this time, that maybe it would be a good idea to get away from the TV, and try to do something. I think that the only reason why I thought this way was because of something my mother told me. ? We have to keep on living our everyday lives. If we don?t, then and only then will they have won this fight.? I got dressed, and made my way into work that day. I thought that I would be fine. However, this event was all that anyone could speak of. It was so hard to see tourists inside of this playhouse, having fun. I don?t know why it bothered me so much, but I thought that if I was so depressed, and so hurt that they should have been too. Someone asked me what was wrong? I gave them an evil look, and ran into the restroom. What is wrong? How could someone be so careless, and stupid to ask such a question? I quickly cleaned the tears from my face, and returned to work. The night dragged on forever, but I made it through till the end of my shift. That night, my eyes continued to be glued to the TV even though the same things were just being repeated over and over again. There wasn?t anything new being said yet. The next day, I felt the same pain. This lasted for weeks, even months. I couldn?t go a whole day without getting into a deep conversation with someone about the recent events. I cried almost everyday while driving in my car. It was always something that made me see a drastic change in my country. Like the growing patriotism. On my way to work the following day, I bought a window flag from a young man standing on the corner of an intersection, just to show my patriotism, and my pain for my country. Tell us your story: I heard a radio report that stated that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center, but really didn't take it seriously at first as the local radio stations seem to love to make fun of the "Yankees" down here in Texas. I'm originally from Camden, New Jersey, and take alot of flack for my 'accent'. Upon going into the doctor's office, however, I looked at the TV on the wall and was shocked and stunned to see the second plane as it hit! It seemed totally unreal, like someone was playing a VERY BAD JOKE on the viewers, sort of like when Orson Welles broadcast WAR OF THE WORLDS on radio so long ago, and caused such a panic. But, as the reality of what was happening started to sink in -- I think I went into total shock -- I had friends from my High School who had gone to work on the WTC when it was being built, and also knew that some of them had taken jobs there with major corporations after it was completed. As soon as I returned home I immediately called my Mother to find out where my sister, and step-brothers and step-sisters were at, and if any of them had been there when the attacks happened. She comforted me regarding most of them but wouldn't talk about my friends from high school later when the lists of the dead were disclosed in the local paper. I still wonder WHY did such a terrible thing happen to so many totally innocent people, it will never make sense to me. I try to go on with life, but sometimes its harder now, knowing that even people I didn't know personally have suffered, both the ones killed and the families that they left behind. I moved to OKC right after the bombing attack on the Murrah Building there and didn't understand WHY would anyone do that against innocent people, most of my neighbors in northwest OKC had lost a loved one or friend. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I take care of my Grandson while my Daughter works. He had a doctors appointment that morning. I don't remember the exact time of the appointment. It was sometime around noon. I had the TV on in the kitchen. The World News broke into local programing. They were talking about a small plane hitting one of the WTC buildings. I paged my Husband. When he called me I was telling him how terrible it was to see the WTC building on fire. I was telling him how horrible it must be for the people in the WTC building. I leaned my elbows on the counter in front of the TV. The next thing I remember was seeing a plane hit the other WTC building. The hole time I am yelling in the phone to my Husband what just happened. I was yelling we are being attacked, that was no small plane. That was a jetliner. I realised a long time after that day I was in shock. I still took my Grandson to his doctors appointment. His other Grandmother met me there. I remember the TV being on in the waiting room. There were a couple parents with children waiting for their turn to see the doctor. I just couldn't stand the TV being on in front of the children, so I went over and turned it off. I didn't realise until about fifteen minutes later I had angered the adults in the waiting room when I turned off the TV. The nurse came over to me and said, Patricks Grandmom, you have upset everyone by turning off the TV, and I said fine turn it back on, but we will be waiting out in the entryway until you call us. I remember looking at people in their cars as I was driving to and from the doctors office. I remember looking at the world around me different. Like I suspected some kind of terror to happen right in front of me. We live right next to BWI Airport. It was such an erie feeling not hearing the airplanes taking off and landing. I was so angry after the attacks it took me days before I finally cryed and got some of that anger out. I haven't felt right since 9/11. It is something I can't easily explain, but I just know there alot of people who know just what I mean. Thousands and Millions of lives will never be the same. My Grandsons doctor's sister goes right by the WTC every day. She works nearby. It was hours before her family knew she was OK. My nephew was in DC when the plane hit the Pentagon. He heard it hit. My husband wouldn't tell me my nephew was in DC until he got in touch with him to make sure he was OK. My husbands family is in North Carolina. They were all calling to make sure we were OK since we are between New York and DC. I feel so bad for the people who lost their lives and their family and friends. I have prayed for them often. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 marks the anniversary of the day that heartless terrorists attempted to bring our nation to it's knees. As a seventh grader in a city almost 2000 miles away from the World Trade Center towers and 1500 miles from the Pentagon, and with no relatives living outside of Texas, I was not directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001 any more than many of my fellow Americans. But at the same time, I was. The bell signaling the end of first period rang and as I made my way down the hall to my science class, our principal made an announcement. I was able to hear, "...an apparent terrorist attack...planes flew into the World Trade Center towers in New York...school will not be cancelled." Confused, I went to science and sat through the period, the teacher saying nothing about the attacks or even referring to the principal's announcement. I was unable to focus, wondering what could possibly be wrong. When I went to my third period, our teacher had the television on. He was glued to the screen and I set my stuff down and watched in horror as the screen showed a commercial plane slamming into one of the WTC towers. We watched the news the whole period, some people talking and ignoring what was going on in our country. I desperately listened, trying to hold back the tears as they replayed the tapes and showed live footage of what was happening then. When the bell rang, I raced down the hall to my fourth period class and asked to use the phone. I called my mom from school crying, asking her what was going on. She insisted on picking me up from school, and so I left early and went home, ignoring my science homework and gluing myself to the TV all night. I watched the footage repeatedly and listened intently when the president addressed the nation. "This is a day when all Americans unite in our resolve for justice and peace." I remember him saying that, as well as him saying, "Terrorism against our nation will not stand." A few months later, I visited Ground Zero. Standing there staring at the site where America's Trade Center towers once stood, I felt so much at once. It was empowering, devastating, and even triumphant because I knew America had survived. They tried to hurt us, to wound our pride, but instead they made us stronger. They united us in a way that nothing else could have. All of the sudden, America felt the same pain, the same anguish, the same anger, even if at different levels. Envious and resentful of our freedom, they tried to take it away, to punish us for what America stood for: freedom, liberty, and unity. But they couldn't. They were successful in shaking us, in scaring us, but they failed to break us. America as a whole is too strong to let that happen, and that was proved on September 11. September 11, 2001 didn't affect me directly, but whether or not I experienced the tragedy first hand, it still changed my life profoundly. In some ways, America will never be the same. But now, over a year and a half later, I find that we are forgetting. We are humans, and scientific studies prove that humans forget tragic events. We confuse, we rearrange, we scramble. And that is happening today. September 11 is not something to forget. It is not something that we can put in the back of our minds because it is not something that can be erased. After that day, we all came together as a country but now, as the war proceeds, we are dividing again. Once more, we have become individuals, when right now more than ever we need to be as one. After the attacks, everyone talked about unity. But if we want to be a united nation, we don't show it. One of the biggest forms of division is going on right now in America: not standing behind our leader. Whether we support him, detest him, resent him or cheer him on, Bush is still our leader. We need to stand behind him, even if we don't believe in the things he is doing. Keep that in mind, America. Now I ask you one thing: to never forget September 11. Burn it inside your memory, because as painful as it is, it needs to be remembered. Each and every firefighter, business man or woman, police officer, and American citizen that died that day needs to be rememebered. For their sake, in honor of those who died, in remembrance of the day that shook America, and in dedication to what was sacrificed, remember. Just remember, America, that's all we need to do.
