Tell us your story: Sept 11th When sept 11th happened I was in school ,I didn't know what was happening, because the teacher's didn't let us watch the TV in class rooms. When I came home I turned on the TV, and saw what had happened I was confused and shocked. Even if I am not from this country, but I still felt sad about the people in the World Trade Center that couldn't escape out. When I saw the Twin Towers collapsing I was even more shocked because just think how many people where under the Twin Towers helping others. How many firefighters, police, and doctors where there helping people to get out. What I wished the most is to at least give blood for people that needed it ,and help them in anyway I could ,but I couldn't do that, because I was far away from NEW YORK. All I could do is watch how people were falling off the Towers and Watch how the Towers were collapsing. At the same time I was angry at the people that took over the plain , and crashing them in the World Trade Center. Sept 11th changed a lot of people in United States, and even me about helping others, and carrying. I fell sad for the people that lost families in the Towers, plains, and in the Pentagon. Not only do I fell sad for the Twin Towers , but for the pentagon also. I am thankful every day to god that I am alive, and my family too. We will be always thankful to the firefighters, police, and doctors for helping the people at the Twin Towers. When I first heard the news on the radio, I thought oh a small plane hit a building, we changed the channel. When I walked into my office, i found out differently. We had quite a few employees working at and around the Pentagon and also other facilities on the east coast and were quite concerned for them and their whereabouts. I can only say that we must all have been in shock that day and it seemed like we were watching a horrible disaster movie and that it couldn't possibly be realbut it was, unbelievably to real. Even today it is hard to belived that a person or group could do such a horrible thing. My heart goes out ot all the families affected by this tragedy.. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was seven months pregnant and visiting my parent's home on Norfolk VA. I live in Washington State, and arrived in Norfolk exactly one week before the attacks. My mother and I were having coffee, watching Good Morning America, and chatting about various trivialities, when suddenly I looked at the television and said, "Mom, the World Trade Center in on fire!" We both watched in utter horror and disbelief as the second plane smashed into the tower. My husband serves aboard a Trident Nuclear Submarine and was on partrol at the time. Not being able to speak with him and not knowing what was happening with his boat was extremely difficult. I worried that his partol would be extended, and as I heard countless stories of the military men and women going to work that morning like it was any other day and not coming home because they were sent to help in the war on terror, I worried that my husband would be forced to miss the birth of our second child. Fortunately, because of the nature of his job, he was able to come home on time. I think the thing that floored me the most was that the terrorists used commercial planes. I was shattered by the idea of what those passengers endured in their last minutes of life. I am still haunted by the images of destruction and it has changed me forever. Only my faith in God has sustained me through the last year. And seeing all the stories of the incredible herosim and kindness of average people in the wake of the attacks has given me hope for the spirit of ourt nation. I am grateful to all those who sacrificed themselves to protect the precious freedoms we enjoy. God bless America!!! Tell us your story: September 11th was a brilliantly blue late-summer day in Forest Hills, a quiet neighborhood in the borough of Queens, New York City. I was teaching my 7th grade English classes that fateful morning, administering their first spelling/vocabulary quiz of the year. My classroom is directly on Union Turnpike, a major roadway that forms the service road for the Jackie Robinson Parkway leading to Brooklyn. My schedule included two classes of 7th graders back to back, and the day was also scheduled to be 'Picture Day' for our school. Since I am the advisor to the school yearbook, I needed to check on the progress of the photography when I had my first break, scheduled to be about 10:15. At 9:10 there was a break between first and second periods and I had 5 minutes to run down to the cafeteria and grab a quick cup of tea. The day seemed to be progressing as usual--slightly more hectic due to the disruption of the day due to the picture taking schedule. While in the cafeteria, our college counselor mentioned that a plane had flown into one of the Trade Center towers. My initial reaction was sadness for the person on the plane, but I was sure that it had probably been a small private plane that had veered off course. At 9:15 I returned to class to lead the next group through their paces. Probably about 9:45 I became aware of the almost continuous screech of firetruck and ambulance sirens racing down Union Turnpike. Since my classroom is so near to the street, traffic noises often briefly interfere with class, but this was never-ending. I even remarked to the class that 'something big must have happened' since the sirens were relentless in their cacaphony. At 10:15 at the end of class, a colleague came into the classroom to speak to me. He had been in the faculty room watching the unspeakable images unfold on the CNN link to the computer terminals. His words of "We are under attack!" seemed an impossibility to me, and it seemed as if my blood ran cold. I reached the faculty room to see the impossible picture of both towers engulfed in clouds of black smoke, and all I could think of was the hundreds and thousands of people who work in those buildings. I went out to check on the progress of the pictures. All seemed right with the world--smiling innocent faces, blue skies, garden flowers and trees, laughter and childhood silliness. The word had trickled down to the mothers who had come to help, and the beginings of panick were beginning to eat away at their calm demeanors. By now no cell phones would work, there was no telephone service in all of New York City. Fear had taken hold. The decision was made to tell the Middle and Upper School students at 11:30. Specific details were kept to a minimum for the Lower School kids, but by noon, many parents were coming to pick up their children and bring them home. All of us were consumed with a driving need to speak to our families. I was lucky that I had spoken with my husband who worked in Eastern Long Island, about 60 miles from Manhattan. He was my link to the news media, as most network TV stations were dark, their transmitters crashed in the rubble of the Trade Center. I was consumed with a burning need to speak with my three children who were at school in Nassau county. The overwhelming fear and uncertainty that further attacks were imminent was palpable. After all, the unspeakable had occurred--the landmark beacons of New York City had been attacked and destroyed. Life as we knew it was gone. My need to reach my teenagers wasn't fulfilled until the end of the school day when they returned home to stare dumbfounded at the television images they saw. My morning routine back in high school was to wake up around 7:00, take a shower, eat breakfast, get dressed and leave to school around 8:00. This day was no different. I had band first period and would usually arrive there early (class began at 8:30) to get my instrument ready, music, stand, say hi to friends, etc. It was football season and at that time of year instead of sitting down we would stand around in a huge circle. My director then stepped in and stood in the middle of the circle like usual. He popped a queston to everyone asking "How long do we have to live?" And from that point I knew something bad had happened because whenever someone would pass away he would always begin by asking that question. He then proceeded by saying "We must cherish every moment of our lives because we have no idea when we're gonna die.....because this morning, I dont know if and of you'all have heard, but some sort of missle hit the world trade center in New York". Remember, at that time I had no idea what was going on, probably 98 percent of the rest of the band also. So once he made that announcement, I really didnt react that much. I compare it to planting a seed. When it is first planted nothing happens until time passes. So we all proceeded by having rehearsal, nothing out or the ordinary. But for some reason I had this tiny feeling inside of me that somehow changed my mood. It wasnt until the bell had rang to go to second period. I always walked my best "female friend" to class and thats when she started telling me. "Hey did you hear what happened?" I was like..."yeah, some missle hit the world trade center right?" She replied, "No, two airplanes ran into it, they also hit the Pentagon, its being called a terrorist attack, and it is believed that there are other planes still in the air." From then on I was in some sort of a daze. No immediate tears, hysterical reaction, just kind of a bad feeling brewing inside me. Once I got to class, the television was tuned to CBS. I sat, watched the news along with the rest of the class and my teacher. Dan Rather kept recaping the event while video clips of the planes crashing into the WTC kept playing. He also kept repeating that the towers had collapsed. At that time I turned to my teacher and asked in awe "Both towers collapsed?" He nodded yes. Then thats when everything hit me. I was speechless, I had begin realizing what was happening. Everyone in the class looked scared. Some of the girls even gasped when they saw the planes crash and when they showed people jumping. I was silent. It was almost like a bad dream, or watching a scary movie. I kept saying..."how could people do this? Why?" I was so confused. At that time my dad was on a business trip to Dallas for a few days. I just wanted him to come home, but he couldnt return home until many days later due to the shut down of all the airports. Later on in class, my emotions never hit rock bottum until I saw Tony Blair's press conference on the events. The tears came after I saw him holding back his tears when he said the words "And we will stand with the United States...shoulder to shoulder...until this evil is rid from our world". The rest of the day was a very sad day. I remember that I thought it was soo ironic that it was a very dark, rainy day in Harlingen. Band practice was canceled, and I left home right after school. On the way home I was in disarray. I remember listeing to Michael Jackson's "Rock my World". And as I was driving I felt like i was in a scnene of Ghostbusters at that part where the huge convoy of army, police, firemen, were racing toward the "Haunted Apartement bulding" where Bill Murray says "Come on! lets run some red lights! At that moment i felt the world could be ending and I kept telling myself "We're going to war". As I got home my mom was getting there. She looked sad. She told me her story. She said she wasnt gonna go jogging that evening because she said she didnt feel it was right. She just wanted to stay home, order pizza, and watch the news. So we did just that. Tell us your story: It was a morning like all mornings, I was in the office about 7:30 a.m. September 11th, and as the morning went on, we started receiving phone calls saying " did you hear about the planes that flew into the Trade Centers. My answer to that was "ya right" nothing like that happend. The person on the other line said pull out the television and watch the news, the happy morning went from smiles and good morning to "what the hell is happening". The office is full of tears and people saying how could this have happend. The office was in an uproar, I could not stop crying and asking if it was just a movie that the news was playing. My friend said call everyone in your family to see if you have everyone, before I could pick up the phone, friends of the family who happen to be on there way home stopped by to see if I was ok because they new that I have family in New York. My mother called me to tell me that everyone in New York was ok and that my Uncle Chuck was going to have to go away with the Military for a while, it was hard for me because I did not want him to go. He is very close to me and I had a bad experience the first time he had to go and that was durig the fighting over in the Pursion Gulf. Even though The United States lost a lot of inocent people, there are a lot of people I know who never went to church, never cried about anything, or showed real emotion, doing so right now. Its a shame that it had to take something like this to make America realize that as one we can take care of eachother and love one another. It should have been this way all along. My last few lines, as an American I will still love and respect my fellow neighbors and I will still fly in our beautiful skies, and I have become more kind and loving since this has happend. The children still do not understand the whole thing, but I let my daughters know that it is still safe and ok for them to go to school and play outside because we live in America and we will try to not have this happen to us ever again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I'll never forget the sound of the phone ringing and my friends voice imploring to me "wake up and turn on the TV". To my horror I awakened to see one of the Towers on fire. Then the other tower was hit and the first one went down. I watched TV all day, I could not tear myself away in hopes that they would find victims alive. I will never forget the image of innocent people (it still bring tears to my eyes) jumping out of windows, knowing they were jumping to their deaths. It will haunt me to my death that these people had to choose between jumping or being burned to death. I have mourned our losses for the last year and I am still in mourning for what we lost. I don't know if I will ever recover from this. I will also never forget the spirit of the American people and how resillent we are. During the last year I have seen more love and caring than I can remember in years. Strangers that are actually willing to help each other. I find it difficult to express my joy over this (am I supposed to feel joy?). I am sad that it took a catastrophy for the American public to love each other and care for one another. I do have friends and family in other countries and it warms my heart and sole to know that the world is behind us and mourns with us. I read many tributes from people all over the world. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work in lower manhatttan and that day was suppose to be just an ordinary day. My day usually starts off with taking my son to school and then coming to work. I am always early to work but not on this day. My plans were to drop off my son and when I get off the station on Fulton Street, proceed to Borders at the World Trade Center to purchase a few books to read. I usually get to lower manhattan around 8:30 a.m. but on this day, God must have been watching me because my train was delayed and I arrived at 8:45. I still did not know what was going on. I proceeded to go outside and I realized that it was too late to go to Borders when I saw so many people looking up at the World Trade Center. I couldn't see from where I was standing so I crossed the street and then I saw the fire. I heard people talking about how it was a small plane or a helicopter. I was just stunned. I said a prayer for all those people trapped on those floors. I called my girlfriend who is a cop and told her what was going on. She instantly told me to go to work and stay there. She told me that it was an act of terrorist. I told her no way but she yelled at me and I listened. As I walked to work I started to cry (like I am doing now)and wondered why this is happening. I stayed in front of my work place to see my other co-workers. I didn't realize what time it was when I heard a loud sound and a big red fire ball just exploded from the other tower. I screamed and cried. I will never forget those colors as long as I live. I got on my cell phone and called my mother which to my surprise she had no clue as to what was going on. She has a really nice view of the towers so I told her to just look out her window and as she did, I heard her yell and cry. She asked me how was I getting home and all I told her that if I have to swim the East River then that is how I'm getting home. Time passed by very slowly for me. I was still looking up at the towers crying my eyes out when I felt the street shake. I looked up and before my very eyes I saw the first tower crumple down to dust. Lots of people were running towards me but all I could do was just fall to the ground and cry some more. Luckily for me, my co-worker was in better shape than I was and grabbed me by the arm and dragged me to safety. All I remember seeing was a huge big ball of dust coming my way and I did not care. I was very scared and frightened that to this very day, I still have nightmares. Anyway, after a few more hours I walked over the Manhattan Bridge, walked over 1 mile to my mother's house and collapsed from exhaustion in her arms. That is my memory of 9/11. We were going to my 1 yr. checkup after my daughter was born. My appointment was for 9:00 am.-the ride is about 1/2 hour from Bradford. My husband went for a ride with our kids while he waited for me. I was scared because they were starting to shut down highways and main streets to airports and railways. I didn't have my cell phone. Groggily, I sat up at 8a to see a wakening site on the television. Watching two twin towers burning, smoke billowing out from every tear, every hole. I was awake within seconds. I quietly listened as the reporter on the local news told the horrific details of how not one, but two airplanes had been hijacked by terrorists and were flown into the twin towers. I was terrified. I felt so insecure. I had no clue what to expect now. I don't think anyone did. So I did what I believe the other 699 students and 70 or so faculty did that day. Waited in anticipation for an answer. I called my mom. Telling her to turn on the tv to the news. Participate in my grief. We spoke for maybe 5 minutes, hung up and sat in seperate houses in seperate states and listened. No one that day could manage going to classes. All of us, every tv, every room filled to capacity as we watched the continuing coverage. I don't think a single eye was dry. We were devastated. So a year later and I still feel the remorse for the thousands of lives that were stolen from thousands of families. It's hard for me to sit and tell my story to you without crying. So today, I will proudly wear my flag pin as I work in honor of the fallen and missing. I will proudly remember those that passed. Tell us your story: It occured to me that there have been many books written about September 11th, 2001, but most of them are from the standpoint of people who have intimate knowledge of the damage done that day. I have no intimate knowledge of the damage done that day. The closest the tragedy came to me was a friend's uncle's niece was a flight attendant on one of the planes brought down that day by evil incarnate. I shudder to consider the last minutes of her life. The emotion that overtook me on that day is overwhelming even now. As I write this, I struggle not to cry. Remembering the sheer emotion of that day is very hard for me. And I live in Marietta, Georgia, almost 900 miles from New York City. I have memories from that day that I want to put on paper, for some sort of preservation. So I have done so. And I have also collected the memories of others - those that were particularly poignant. Our country has never experienced anything like this before and hopefully will never do so again. Perhaps by collecting these memories here, I can help to prevent future occurances of this sort. Maybe. For me, the day began simply enough. I was traveling with my job and spent the night of the 10th at my cousin's house in Walker County, Georgia. Very rural. I woke up that morning and got ready and left the house to drive to a school some distance away. It was dark when I left and dark when I got to the school. One of my biggest regrets about this day and one of my most vivid memories is of the pledge to the flag that morning in that school. I ignored it. I was sitting in a teachers' lounge by myself and heard the pledge over the intercom and completely ignored it. I left that school and drove a few miles to Chickamauga City Schools. I visited the middle school and made an appointment to meet with the principal later that day. To kill some time, I drove over to the board of education and visited for a while. They fed me cookies and coffee and as I was enjoying this in their kitchen, my husband called me on my cell phone and told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. My first thought was "What a horrible accident." He told me he didn't know much more about it, but thought it was a small plane. I soon left the Board of Education and drove to the high school in Chickamauga and tried to get some news on the radio to see what had happened. All I could get was a sports talk program which seemed to be all about whether or not Michael Jordan would come back to basketball. No mention of the plane, or if there was, it was only in passing. I finished at the high school and drove to the elementary school to visit there. I left there quickly and went back to the middle school for my appointment. I was early, so I waited in the office for the principal. While I was there, the phone started going nuts and children were in and out of the office giving updates. It seemed that every television in the school was tuned to the events in New York and Washington. I kept trying to get my husband on the phone but could not get a signal in the school. Eventually a young boy came into the office and said that both Trade Towers had been hit by planes and the Pentagon was now a "Squareagon" as he put it. At that point, the only thought in my mind was that the world was ending. I met with the principal eventually and left. I had a few more appointments scheduled that day, so I went to the car to try and contact them. I called my husband and had the information about both towers being hit confirmed as well as information about the Pentagon. I called my office and talked with some close friends, just to put forth theories as to what had happened. At this point, the full impact of the tragedy had not hit me. I wanted to talk to my mother, so I called her and reached her on her cell phone on her way to Atlanta to have her car serviced. She did not have the radio on and had no idea what had happened. She was completely shocked and I was glad I reached her before she saw the overhead message signs on the interstate in Atlanta which had all been programmed to say "NATIONAL EMERGENCY - HARTSFIELD AIRPORT CLOSED". I cannot even begin to imagine what people who saw that and didn't know what had happened must have thought when they saw that sign. I called my lunch appointment and said I was on my way. As I drove down the two-lane road out of Chickamauga to Highway 27, the full emotional impact of the events hit me. My father died when I was four and the emotional impact of that on me was muted by my age. Since then, a few close relatives and friends have died and their deaths have been difficult for me, but nothing has hit me so hard as I was hit on September 11th. One minute I was driving down the road and I was fine. The next minute, I was blind with tears and howling. Howling is truly the only word I can use to describe it. The pain was intense. I got to Highway 27 and all of a sudden, all I wanted was to be home. I am originally from Rome, Georgia, about 50 miles from Chickamauga, straight down Highway 27. When I got to 27, the only thing that I could think of was "HOME, HOME, I want to be HOME." And at that point, Home was Rome. Home was the house I grew up in. I turned right on the highway and headed towards Rome and away from my lunch appointment. I called her secretary and told her that I was no longer coming. And thus my journey began. As I drove towards Rome, I kept trying to call my mother and husband on my cell phone - when I could get a signal - but when I could, I always got the "full cell" signal, meaning everyone in the area was on their cell phone. Finally I got through and my mother and her friend had gone to my house in Marietta and were staying there, so I decided to go to my house instead of home. It must have taken me three hours to get home that day - about an hour and a half more than necessary. Once I got home and saw the graphic pictures on television, it all became real to me. I hugged my mother, I hugged her friend, I hugged my husband. All I could do was watch television. I was glued to the set from that point on. The infamous "crawl" became my source of news. We went to church that night - a special service for people who just felt the need to attend. Later we went to our hangout, Rafters, and played trivia and watched George Bush speak on television. People in the bar cheered and clapped at his speech. That was the first time I felt the togetherness that has been so prevalent since then. All events of the previous year were forgotten and people who had hated Bush 43 the day before were cheering him on. Later, a good friend of ours came over and was telling us about a friend of his who worked in the Trade Center who he had not been able to contact. We worried about her together and just were grateful for being together. After he left, he called to say that her husband had called him and said she was fine, even though it had taken her eight hours to get home. Somehow, that made the end of the day somehow bearable. Tell us your story: I was teaching my Third Grade class when a colleague came into my room, took me aside and told me our country was under attack. I began to cry as we hugged each other.At that point we knew very little except that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Center, another into the Pentagon, and a fourth somewhere in PA. I was told that the flights were originally headed from Boston to LA. My son and his fiance were living in Redondo Beach,CA at the time which is about 15 minutes from LAX. My husband and I had flown to CA to visit them that previous summer, taking the same route as those planes. It sent a chill through me. Would my son be safe? I got coverage for my classroom and went to the office to try to get some information. Since the building was undergoing renovations, we did not have acess to a television. The only outside source of information was a small radio on the secretary's desk. I couldn't find out much more than I already knew. I went into the ladies' room and cried. I Had to compose myself and get back to class. It was necessary for all of us to act like nothing was happening for the sake of the children. We agreed to not say anything and let them find out when they returned to their homes. That was the hardest day of teaching I have ever spent. I felt as if my students were never going to be the innocent little children that they were in my classroom that day ever again. It was heartbreaking. As luck would have it, it was my turn for recess duty that afternoon. I recall what a beautiful blue sky was overhead. A little first grader was chasing a butterfly. He looked so happy and content in the bright Autumn sunshine. I kept thinking that in a few hours he would go home where his parents would share the horrible news with him He would never be that innocent or carefree again. All the while, I kept scanning the sky for planes as the paranoia which has been my constant companion ever since began to take root in my soul.That was the longest day of my life. I couldn't wait to get home and call my loved ones, just to hear their voices and be reassured that they were safe. Thank God they were. I crawled into bed at 4:30 that afternoon and just stayed therewatching the news coverage and feeling so frightened,angry,and sad. I haven't flown since although both of my son's have. I count the minutes until they land, checking the news to make sure there have been no crashes. My son will be getting married in Las Vegas on November 9 so I will have to fly then. I am so nervous about it that it's really put a damper on what should be a happy, proud time in my life. I hope and pray that these feelings will pass in time, but don't see how they can. No, I did not have any psychic intuitions of the disastrous events that were to happen later that morning. I was worried about a trivial court case over some silly bar brawl that was calling my boyfriend into court on that day. I had written in my journal just before we were about to leave, ?I am so worried right now, my stomach is in knots?? We approached the courthouse around 8:15 a.m., and minutes into the court session, it turned out that my worrying was (as in most cases) all for nothing, for the case was dismissed. Shortly after 9 a.m. we arrived back home and our cell phones and the house phone were all ringing. I answered the house phone first, for I was closest to it. It was my friend telling me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. ?Quick, quick!? I told my boyfriend, ?Turn on the t.v.!? He did, and there it was, the first plane?s smoky remains smashed into one of the WTC buildings. My knees had locked, and I collapsed on the couch, my eyes fixated on the tragedy that had befallen our country. When the second plane crashed, I knew something was terribly wrong?that this was an attack. Then there was news of a crash into the Pentagon, and another in Pennsylvania. Terrorism, I knew, was the case. It was like the Oklahoma City bombing all over again, only this tragedy was one of bigger, more catastrophic proportions. I began to cry and get shaky, and called everyone I knew, just as they were all trying to call me. As my boyfriend and I spoke to our families on our phones, we held hands tightly. My friend called from Boston (I live ten minutes away) and told me that the city resembled a ghost town; that everyone had left work, school, and recreational activities, all to go home and be with family. She told me how strange it felt as she made her way home. She said it felt like the end of the world to see a city quiet, not a soul in sight. The whole day consisted of closely watching the news, and praying so hard that the victims had escaped, or would be found alive. My heart, like so many, was ripped in two, just imagining the fear and terror all of the victims had. What they had to go through was unimaginable. It was so unreal, so unlike anything I ever thought I would see in my lifetime. Watching the events unfold before my very eyes, people?s reactions, desperate, frightened people jumping to their deaths so as to escape from the evil disaster brought upon them that fateful morning?it was all too much to bear. It did not seem real. It did not seem that there were human beings capable and disgustingly rotten enough to carry out this ultimate destruction and the mass murder of thousands of innocent people. That night before I went to bed, I opened my journal from where it sat earlier that morning when I last wrote. The last lines, ?I am so worried right now, my stomach is in knots?? seemed so inappropriate for me to write at eight a.m. that morning on September 11th, before a real tragedy had hit. Suddenly, every worry in my life seemed so small and unimportant at that moment. I felt guilty for having worried about something so insignificant and meager in comparison to the tremendous loss experienced by millions of people that day. I closed my eyes and prayed to God, unable to erase the horrible images that I am sure were playing in all Americans? minds that night. I prayed and I wept until my eyelids were as heavy as my heart was, ever since learning of the horrible events that took place on September 11th, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I AM A SECRETARY/RECEPTIONIST AT THE REAL ESTATE/INSURANCE SCHOOL WHERE I WORK IN NEW JERSEY. ON 9/11/01, AS I SAT AT MY DESK, A WOMAN CAME SCREAAMING INTO MY OFFICE SAYING, "WHERE IS THE REAL ESTATE CLASS? I HAVE TO GET MY HUSBAND RIGHT AWAY?" I SAID THAT THE CLASS WAS DOWN THE HALL BUT WAS IN SESSION AND THEY WOULD BE HAVING A "BREAK" SOON, WHY DIDN'T SHE HAVE A SEAT AND WAIT BECAUSE I COULD NOT DISTURB THE CLASS. SHE KEPT SCREAMING AT ME AND SAID "DON'T YOU KNOW WHAT'S HAPPENED?????" I REPLIED, "NO, I DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE REFERRING TO." SHE SAID, "DON'T YOU HAVE THE TV ON?" TO WHICH I REPLIED, "NO, I'M AT WORK." SHE SAID "THE PLANES ARE FLYING INTO THE BUILDINGS IN NEW YORK!!!!" (BY THIS TIME, I WAS CONVINCED THAT THE WOMAN MUST HAVE ESCAPED FROM THE MENTAL FLOOR AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL ! I TRIED TO CALM HER DOWN AND SAID, "JUST WAIT A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND THE CLASS WILL BE RIGHT OUT ON THEIR BREAK." SHE CRIED AND SAID HER SON WORKS IN N.Y. AND SHE WANTED HER HUSBAND TO GO THERE WITH HER. I TOLD MY BOSS, WHO TURNED ON THE TELEVISION IN HIS OFFICE AND THE REST IS HISTORY !! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was carpooling with a colleague. I'd been busy gettiing ready for work and I had no idea what was going on. As we drove away my friend told me what was going on, or at least what it seemed had happened. He had said that apparently a plane had hit one of the trade center towers, and as he was watching the news another appeared to have hit the secnd tower. We had the radio on, and they were talking to someone at the pentagon, who was saying there were rumors of an evacuation. The reports from the pentgon were highly contradictory. We were skeptical--we were on guard against media hype and didn't want to jump to conclusions. We bothremembered how the media were blaming "Arabs" in the early stages of the Oklahoma City bombing. By the time we had walked to our office we were hearing other reports, including that the petagon had been hit and was on fire, and that downton DC wa under attack. But we couldn't get any hard news--all the news websites were tied up, and the TVs couldn't get any reception, since we weren't on a cable circuit and didn't have an antenna I was co-teaching a class that morning, and my fellow teacher had a cell phone, She was calling her house every five minutes and getting updates from her husband, who was watching TV. We heard that one of the towers had fallen, and that there had been a bomb on the Mall. We decided to let class go, as we had several students who had family members either at the pentagon or downtown in DC. We felt like we had to caution them not to jump to conclusions, not to cast a lot of blame till more was known. When we walked in to the clss we tried to get the TV to work, but no dice--the students said they had already tried. Interestingly, a couple of them seemed to have little or no idea what had happened. We let the class go about 10:45, after reiterating what reports we had heard. I drove home with my co-teacher, who kept the cell phone going almost the whole time. We were both pretty anxious--I had been unable to contact my wife, who works at the CIA, and I kept checking for news of an attack there. Turns out they were evacuating, and it took her forever just to get out of the parking lot. After that we were glued to the TV and the web, just like everyone else. My co-teacher and I both felt like we had to get right back into teaching our course, so we did, but we also cautioned the students, again, not to jump to conclusions and blame the wrong people.
