Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I remember waking up around 6:30 am. Around 6:45 AM I went into the living room to look for my shoes. I have a really bad habit of leaving things where they don't belong. When I got into the living room my dad was watching the news, which is not unusual in our house. I noticed that something was happening so I asked him what was happening and he said that a plane had just hit one of the world trade center towers. I asked him if it was an accident and he said no one knew if it was an accident or not because no one knew a whole lot of information. A short time later, we saw the second plane hit the second tower, I remember saying "this is not an accident". My dad then said "definitely not". When my younger sister and I arrived at school a short time later around 7:30 AM we immediately went over to the student center to look for our friends, we found them watching tv in the main cafeteria we asked them if anything else had happened to which they responded that there was another hijacked plane out there somewhere. So we sat down and we all watched the news together. While we were watching in the cafeteria the first tower collapsed. Followed by the second one a short time later. None of us spoke a single word as we watched the news, it was so silent. I don't think any of us went to our classes that day. Those words from the radio were the first signs of trouble I heard on my way to school that morning. The events of September 11 have no doubt changed the lives of many around the world; though I have not been directly affected by the attacks as others have, my sympathy still goes out to anyone who has suffered since that memorable day. But maybe I don't deserve to be sympathizing or mourning for others, for I have not lost as much as victim's families have. I might be too young and naive to really feel the whole extent of what the events on the eleventh have produced. I don't feel the "unity" that has apparantly been brought out by the attacks, and I certainly have not felt the need to display a flag anywhere for the world to see. No, I prefer my own method of patriotism. I think what I have tried to do most since last September is try to understand the situation better. But I found that difficult to do with masses of red, white, and blue being hurled at me for the couple of weeks following the eleventh. It wasn't that I opposed of the way others were showing their feelings, I just wanted people to respect the way I chose cope with mine--though I'm still not positive what my feelings are. Being on the west coast might be numbing me from reality; or perhaps it's all the movies and shows I've seen depicting similar events. Whatever it is, I know that some day I will really know what my position is on the attacks and the after math. The unity that has apparantly held America together this past year is something I expected, and I am thankful that ignorant acts of the Pearl Harbor aftermath have not taken place. However, I know I am still the same person as I was before and I will continue to be. Many people have told me that they have discovered themselves more because of the attacks, but I just feel like I'm the same person, living the same life. I guess someone could be reading this and thinking either that I'm lucky, or just arrogant and unsensitive. In my mind, I'm just lucky, and maybe naive, because if anything like that events that took place on September 11 occur again, I know they have the potential to affect me much greater than this event has. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My name is Dave Shultz, and my September 11 story occurred in some proximity to the Pentagon attack. I was working as a journalist in downtown Washington, D.C. We had a television set in our office, and I remember walking in and seeing dark smoke rolling out from what looked like a gash in the side of one of the towers. A colleague told me that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center. My immediate thought was that the plane must've been a small private plane -- surely a larger craft would've been piloted by a professional, and much less likely to make such a mistake. I went to my desk, and wrote an e-mail to a friend, to see if he'd gotten any information on it. Meanwhile, I tried to log onto the Washingtonpost.com website, which was, at that time, unavailable, probably due to the number of "hits" on the site. As I was at my desk, I heard that another plane had hit, this time on the other tower. The first collision had seemed so unlikely that the second confirmed our suspicions that this couldn't be unlucky coincidence. At that time, word started circulating that there was actually a collection of airborne planes in a coordinated attack, with some headed for Washington. My first thought was to call my wife -- we'd only been married a few months -- and tell her to get home. She worked in Rosslyn, a business community across the Potomac River from Washington, and I didn't want her to be near the city, particularly as she was working in the very tall USA Today building. When I reached her (cell phones weren't working), she told me that her building was being evacuated. She wanted to meet me nearby, but I told her that I'd see her at home. I didn't know what the Washington Metro system would be like, but I guessed that it wouldn't be running (I didn't drive into work). I'd board it, and try to get as close to home as possible -- then I'd figure out what to do to get the rest of the way home. About this time, we heard that the Pentagon had been hit; this sealed it for us, and we all started talking about leaving. Our building was on 17th and K street, and it was showing on the t.v. screen as local newscasters set up in the city -- the feeling was that the White House or Congress might also be targets. As we're not very far from either site, I said my goodbyes and got on the Farragut North station, blue line, headed south across the river and into Alexandria, where we had an apartment in a high rise. The metro was crowded, but orderly -- people were unusually solicitous and polite. We didn't stop at the Pentagon stop, zoomed by it. I got off at Pentagon City, a large mall just south of the Pentagon. The mall was completely deserted. Walking through it, I felt like a character from "War of the Worlds," as though I were the only person left in the area. I walked out of the mall, into the empty parking lot, and smelled the smoke. Looking toward the Pentagon, I could see the cloud rising over the top of the I-395 overpass. A deputized somebody told me I couldn't linger there, that I had to get out of that area for security reasons. I called my wife, Sherry, who picked me up (we live about 10 minutes from the Pentagon). When we got home, it was about 11:15 a.m. I took off my shirt, got a drink, and walked out to the balcony. We live on the 16th floor of a building that overlooks the city. I could clearly see the smoke from the Pentagon; the Capitol dome was intact, and the Washington Monument and National Cathedral were visible (it was a gorgeous day). I don't recall if National Airport had stopped flights by that point, but in the weeks and months to come, that airport would be closed. We'd grown accustomed to sitting on the balcony and watching the flights queue up over the city -- no more. In addition, there was a notable blackness on that part of the Potomac river, as all the airport lights to which we'd become accusomed were now out. A flight of two fighter jets went over the city, something I'd not seen before. I remember thinking that Washington D.C. hadn't had smoke over it from aggressive attack since the War of 1812. It was a very odd, disturbing moment. The Pentagon smoked for several days afterward, and we could smell it acutely from the balcony. For several nights after the attack, other residents in the building pulled fire alarms, thinking the smoke they smelled came from our building. This may sound like an unusual concern, but being as our building is one of the few tall ones in the area south of the city, my concern was that a repeat attack may pick it to hit if for some reason they were unable to make it to the city. For weeks after the attack, I passed Humvees, APC vehicles and armed soldiers when going into work. I didn't know anyone killed in the attack, though a bar in Old Town Alexandria had a picture of a naval officer who died taped in the window for months afterward. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was about to take my youngest daughter Jordan to school, when I switched the tv over to FoxNews. I saw the picture of the tower with the hole in it. I figured that a small plane had somehow crashed into the building. I took my daughter to school and came back home. My son, who was being homeschooled, said to me, when I walked in the door, "Mom, a plane has crashed into the building." I said,"Yeah, I know, we saw it before we left." And he said, "No, this is another plane that crashed into the other building." I was absolutely in shock! I called my husband, who had been listening to it on the radio. I just couldn't believe the image of that plane flying into that building! It is something I will never forget! After a while, they said that there was a fire at the Pentagon, then they said, "We have unconfirmed reports that a large plane has crashed into the Pentagon." I panicked, even being in a very small town here in Texas. I was so afraid! I wanted to go pick my kids up at school. Oh, one thing I forgot. When I came home and my son told me about the other plane crashing, I thought about the kids who might be getting to school late, and I thought that the teachers at the elem. school might not know what is going on. I called the school and talked to the secretary and she had not heard what had happened. She told the principle, who made an announcement that the teachers were to leave their tv's off because of what was going on in New York and Washington. Then, I heard about the plane crashing in Pennsylvania. My first thought was that the terrorists had crashed it on purpose because they knew they might not make it back to Washington. Only later did we all find out what the wonderful people on that plane did, fighting to take control of the plane, giving their lives to save maybe thousands of others. I was glued to the tv for weeks, and pretty much still am. I am so proud of President Bush and the way he has handled everything. He makes me very proud to be a Christian and a conservative. I will never forget the tears in his eyes because I could tell that they were real tears, and he really hurt for the people who died and their families. I then went on a hunt for a flag, and when I finally got one, I hung it out and it is still there. Not because it is the latest "fad", or because everyone else is doing it. I did it because I am so glad and thankful that I live in this wonderful country! Our lives will never be the same again because of 9/11, but in the midst of tragedy has come incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice, and I am also very proud of our military and the job they are doing. I pray that God will continue to bless this country and I hope that future generations to come will understand what it really means to be patriotic, and to be an American. Thank you! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I got out of the shower and saw the image of the first tower on TV, smoke billowing out of the side. At first, like so many other Americans, I thought it was yet another tragic plane wreck. As I was getting ready for work, I saw and heard the reports of the second plane hitting the second tower. I immediately sunk into the chair, thinking, "Oh my God, the SOB did it! Bin Laden, the SOB, did it!" I went onto AOL Instant Messenger and told my husband about the towers. It was the first he had heard of it, as he was at work. As I drove to work, I listened to reports - some only rumors, but the chaos this created is bound to create rumors among the valid news stories. I heard about the Pentagon - first one plane, then a report of a second one. I was taking my son to his day care in SE Portland (we live in Gresham), and during the next 1/2 hour, I heard the reports coming in, heard the newscasters' tears and anger coming across the airwaves. I was almost numb with shock. After dropping off my son, yet more stories were coming in about other planes that were missing. As I was making my way to our office in Milwaukie (I work for the State of Oregon), I heard of the first tower's collapse. I was driving through a construction site at that moment, and wanted to tell them what was happening. Total shock went through me when I heard about the second tower's collapse. When I got to work, my team was getting ready for a meeting. We had the TV on in the room while waiting for everyone to arrive, and watched in horror the replays of the collapses. One of my coworkers came into the room and was upset by our fixation on the events in New York. At that time, I doubt she realized the implications of what was happening. Another coworker came in, visibly shaken, and said her daughter is living not far from the towers and she was worried sick. I gave her my cell phone to try and reach her. Several hours later, her other daughter later called her at our office in Oregon City and said she had talked to the daughter in New York, and she was doing ok. During our break, several of us watched again the reports of the towers, and then the Pentagon, replayed several times. I also talked to another worker whose son is in the military, and was concerned he was going to be hurt. When I got back into my car after my meeting, I listened, once again in shock, to stories of people who were supposed to be in the towers, but by some miracle or another, seeming as an annoyance at the moment, were kept from being there. One woman had an appointment at the WTC. She had a daughter with her who was hungry, so they had stopped to eat, and therefore were miraculously saved from the horror and turmoil. Many stories like this were being reported as a positive note. When I walked into my office in Oregon City, I saw that each row of cubicles had a television in it. Those televisions were on for the next two days, keeping us all informed of the events. They were our link to New York, Washington, and the entire United States. When I came back from my break, there were three ribbons on my desk, one red, one white, and one blue. I tied them to my antennae on my car, and they are still there today. We all started collecting flags, ribbons, anything to show our patriotism, even on one of the darkest days of our lives. As I drove to work over the next week, I saw more and more cars with flags, banners, printed photos from computers, ribbons, bumper stickers, and anything else patriotic. The local craft stores sold out of their patriotic and red, blue and white ribbons. It seemed like every store had flags and bumper stickers to sell. I bought pins with red, white and blue ribbons tied in a bow for my coworkers. The horror on what seems like the other side of the world has hit close to home, and hit hard. In October, my husband and I braved the airports. We felt safe! The safety measures taken, though there may be mistakes from time to time, have been for our safety, not to make us late or annoy us. I bought t-shirts with a flag that read, "We are not afraid." My son has a t-shirt with "USA" in our patriotic colors. Not long ago, I learned the Twenty-Dollar-Bill trick. When folded properly, it shows the twin towers, burning, and the Pentagon, after the crash. The number is significant as well - there were 19 hijackers, but an additional one sits incarcerated for his horrific crimes. Today, one year later, many of us wore Red, White and Blue. We, as an office, stood and said the Pledge, and my team then went outside and said it in front of the flag. My teammates sang "Let Freedom Ring." Although we are miles away from the sites of tragedy, we are continually reminded that we live in America, and our freedom is just that - OURS. Before I woke up on September 11, 2001 my dad had called my mom and told her about a plane crashing into the World Trade Center. So, she woke me and the rest of my family up and we all watched the news together. My Grandpa may have been on that plane if he hadn't canceled his flight at the last second. I could only imagine how sad I would have been, so I then knew how thousands of people in the world must be feeling right that second. Including my aunt, who lives in New York, (not new york city) who had a friend that was on the plane that was high jacked and crashed. Her friend called her only a very short time before the crash and told her that she loved her and that she was about to die because there were now terrorists flying the plane. My aunt couldn't believe what she was hearing. Not until it was all over the news is when she fully understood. She new her friend was dead, but that at least she got to say good bye. Even though I didn't know the person on the plane, I knew they must have been extremely scared. I know I would have been, so that just shows how brave the firefighters were for going towards the building as it was on fire. When I went to school, I learned more about the attack but i couldnt understand why somebody would kill themselves just to kill thousands of others. I remember thinking that we would have to be going to war with whoever it was that attacked us, because whoever it was deserved it. I saw my son walking towards me with a terribly sad look on his face. He told me we were under attack. There was something happening in New York. I did not understand what he talking about. He turned on the tv right away after we arrived home. A group of crazy terrorists hijacked the planes and hit the middle of the towers of World Trade Center. The Towers fell down and been destroyed. The area around them looked just like a battlefield. "This is real! This is not a action movie!" I told myself. My son did his homework in front of the tv. We were so worried. We kept the tv on to know more. The phone rang. My husband was in Taiwan. His anxious voice sound came from the other end. " Is everything OK there? Stay home! Don't go outside." My neighbor rang my doorbell. She came home from work earlier that day. She said the building she worked in was closed. They thought we were under attack; it was not safe if the building still has been occupied. The people in charge of the building asked them to leave. She stayed with us and watched tv together. On the morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2001, I had just walked into my supervisor's office to sign in for the day. New Orleans is one hour earlier than New York, so it was 7:46 a.m., New Orleans time when the first plane hit. My supervisor had the radio on, and the first reports were coming over that an airplane had just hit the World Trade Center. I turned to look at my supervisor and said "What did they just say?" He confirmed what we both had heard. But at the moment, neither of us knew what had really happened. I made some comment that some nut must have flew a small plane into the tower and killed himself. I figured the Towers could certainly withstand the impact of such a plane. I turned to walk out, not even giving it a second thought. I went into my office, and started my work day. Shortly thereafter, I heard some of my co-workers running down the hallway screaming that the Pentagon was under attack, and that they thought it had been bombed!! I didn't connect it right away about the plane and the Tower, but I remember saying to myself, "if the Pentagon's been bombed, we must be at war." That really shook me. Then, someone else ran up to tell us that another airplane had struck the second Tower. We all looked at each other trying to process all of this. Someone even said they thought it was all a prank, some television stunt or something. No one wanted to believe it was true. Then, more information was being passed, person-to-person; and, we were told the television was on in our Administrator's office, and in the second-floor conference room. Our worst fears were confirmed, and then we knew it was real. But, it still didn't feel real. We were sitting there, glued to the television sets, but not really believing what we saw unfolding before our very eyes. There was litle work being done. Most of us stayed by the television sets most of the day, feeling more helpless and hopeless with each passing minute. I remember that sick feeling I felt in the pit of my stomach when the first Tower started to go down. "Incredulous," I said, "it just imploded, like somebody set off an explosive charge to take down a vacant building!" But it wasn't a vacant building. I knew in my heart that there were still people trying to get out of there. I tried to imagine what they must be going through, but it just didn't compute. I felt an even bigger knot in my stomach when the second Tower did the same. I couldn't imagine someone thinking that God wanted them to do this dastardly, cowardly deed. Afterall, any God worth serving would be certainly able to take care of his own business himself, and not trust it to any man! How wickedly self-serving of them to think that they could so speak for Him?!! I was appalled, hurt, angry and outraged all at once! But in the end, all I could do was pray. Pray for the unsuspecting victims who woke up that day thinking it was just going to be another average day. I also prayed for their family members and friends who never once thought that the last time they saw or spoke to their loved one was really their last. I also prayed for the rest of us that we would be strong enough to see them through their pain and utter despair. And I prayed that the people who did this can one day understand that they did a terrible, terrible thing. I continue to pray for us all. When I first heard about this awful tradegy, all I could think of is trying to get a hold of my brother Ed who works so close to the Pentagon. I was very worried about him. I was going about the same routine of getting ready to go to class. I was eating breakfast while watching The Today Show on NBC and I saw what had happened. I was shocked. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11th at 5:50 AM. at six that morning I was supposed to call the hospital and find out if they had a room for me. I was pregnant and my original due date was Sep. 4th. I was scheduled to be induced on the 11th. When I was finally able to get to the hospital it was around three that afternoon. My daughter was born at 8:16PM that evening. I watched the horrible destruction of New York and the Pentagon on TV the entire day. It was my dad. ?Hey, turn on the news. Something really horrible just happened. Check it out find out about some of the details.? I immediately snapped on the TV. I saw huge clouds of bellowing smoke rising from the World Trade Center. My first thought was why in the world was one of the Twin Towers emitting smoke? Was there a fire? Then there was the report that a massive commercial jet full of passengers hit the World Trade Center. Then my next thought was: what went wrong with the airplane?s positioning and communication systems. Then I went to school, mulling over what I had just saw. This seemed so impossible and surreal that the massive impact of the events didn?t hit me until after watching the constantly repeating video clip of the jet flying directly into the side of the trade center for the umpteenth time. To me, when I visited New York 10 months prior, the colossal Twin Tower seemed to steady and strong. They were the last things I thought could possibly topple down and become a pile of rubble. The day I had anticipated to be a normal school day, had turned into some dream or fantasy that required some time to digest just to justify its mere existence.
