I was in the control room producing the 8:30am morning newscast on September 11, when the news broke that there was a fire in the World Trade Center. The following is from an e-mail I wrote to a friend the next day: I was in the booth when it all happened yesterday. We took live the first pictures of the burning tower before we knew why it was burning - stayed with it live... finally got a CNN VP on the phone who had seen the first plane crash - then as we were interviewing him - he starts yelling "There's another plane coming - there's another plane!!! Another plane just hit the building!!" As he said it, we saw an explosion live on the air. In all my years of training as a producer - I have never felt more terrified than I did in those few seconds. I started shaking so bad I could hardly speak to the anchors. But then I realized we had to keep going - and started feeding them information as fast as I could read it off the wires - get it off the CNN squawk box - or have it given to me by supervisors. Then the report crossed the CNN squawk box about a fire at the Pentagon.... My heart nearly stopped. "Oh my God, It's the end of the world as we know it" was all I could think. A short time later, in one of our live hits with a reporter on the phone - a mob grabbed the phone out of her hand as she was speaking to us... "I'm doing a report... I'll be off in just a moment.. wait.. they're grabbing my phone!" Click. Again - a wave of panic for the safety of our reporter. Words cannot describe the horror I was feeling watching and hearing all this unfold live before me - knowing hundreds of thousands of people were counting on us to get them information as quickly as possible. As producers, we all LIVE for the BIG story and hope we get our crack at it. I had my crack at it. I came through with high marks from my colleagues - many stopped by later to personally thank me or praise me for how I handled the whole ordeal. Yet, deep inside - my heart broke. No amount of appreciation can replace the lives that were lost right before my very eyes - live - on national television. I want to cry - but I'm too emotionally drained. Yes, I lived for the big story - and I got it - now I pray I never have another "big" story as long as I live. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of 9/11, my four year son and I were at an aiport where my husband worked. He had taken our son with him that day and I had gone to pick him up and bring him back home. It was on the way home that I turned on the radio in my car and heard about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. I didn't understand the whole reality of the situation until the second plane hit and then it was announced that we were under a terriost attack. The feeling that came over me was undescribable. I had feeling that I had never sensed before. All I could think about was to get to my children and to make sure that they were alright. I went straight to my daughter's house where she was in disbelief herself. I talked to my other son and I called my mother just to hear her voice. My daughter and I just sat down and watched the TV, wondering what was going to happened next. At that time was when the Tower collapsed. It was so unbelieveable and all I could do was cry. I called my husband to see if he knew what was going on and he didn't so I filled him in and he was just silent for a moment trying to understand how this could happen. I stayed with my daughter most of the morning before going home. After going home, I just sat with my four year old in my arms, watching TV, and crying. I was so scared for everyone I knew because I didn't know what could happen next. Later that evening when my husband came home, I was still sitting and watching TV wondering when something else was going to happen. It seemed like my world had just stopped and I was not able to do anything about it. That night when we finally went to bed, I could not go to sleep. All I could think about was my family. What was going to happen to my children? What were we going to wake up to the next morning? What was my baby going to do if something happened to us and how would we survive? Other thoughts that ran through my mind, over and over, was those children at home that didn't have a daddy or mommy that was coming home anymore. I thought about the wives and the husbands that would be alone because of what had happened and the pain in my heart was so strong until I felt a part of what these people were feeling. It took my several weeks until I could settle back to a normal way of living. But still today, I think about 9/11 and I can still feel some of that pain and it makes me wonder how anyone could take so many lives and call it the right thing to do. I pray for all the families and hope that God has been able to provide peace for them as the days have gone by. Tell us your story: Reverence, Not Rubbernecking A few minutes ago my journey home from church took me, like it does nearly every night - right past the Pentagon. I could see with my eyes what the whole nation and world has seen on their television screens ? a large gaping hole torn into the building by a weapon of fuel, humanity, and cargo. But tonight what impressed me was not the devastation wrought by the hands of evil men, I have come to believe that the hand of evil has no restraint save the one imposed by the mercy of God. What did impress me was how my fellow highway travelers all slowed down at least a half-mile before this symbol of our nations military might came into view. Everyday on the traffic report we hear of accidents on one side of the road that slow traffic on the other with the phenomenon called ?rubbernecking?. I?ve seen rubbernecking a hundred times on the beltway and surrounding highways, and I can tell you that what I saw tonight was most certainly not rubbernecking, it was more like reverence. People weren?t slowing down to gawk; they were slowing out of respect for the lives lost in this act of terrorism. When a man or woman signs up to join any branch of our military, they sign up for the noblest of tasks; that of protecting our nation and its citizens, and defending freedom. They also take a job that brings with it the highest of risks; that of placing your life on the line. They know that whether they are in the infantry or serve on war ships, or if they are in logistics, technical support or medical personnel that their job may one day place them in harms way. Who would ever know that harms way for those who lost their lives this week would be while they were sitting at their desk or gathered around conference tables, or placing files in their proper places. While I write this letter we still don?t know exactly how many lives were lost, but we do know that it was too many and we pray for the families of those who are suffering. Here are some other stories that I?ve heard over the last several hours from members of the Woodbridge congregation that are encouraging: Chuck Africano, Tamara Brown, Lamar Jones, all of whom have regular meetings at the Pentagon, were not there when the attack occurred. Lorna King?s husband directs a logistics unit and although he wasn?t in the building at the time, had a team of personnel who were, and all have been accounted for. Bill & Linda O?Briant?s Son-in-law was in the section of the Pentagon that was struck at the time, but made it out safely. His brother, who also works in the building was right outside and saw the plane hit the building. While one brother was running into the building the other was running out and they saw each other. Lana Africano tells of a friend who was sitting at her desk and heard of the World Trade Center attacks. Something inside told her that she should leave, so she gathered some papers together, got up and walked out. When she reached her car the airplane struck the building. Although we won?t be able to escape the grief over those who we will discover to be lost, we can find encouragement in stories of many who were spared. We can also take courage in the fact that a society that can at times be so indifferent, has rallied to the support of one another and to the aid of those who suffer loss. He said two planes had plowed into the world trade centers. I said "yeah right Steve." He told me to turn the T.V. on and I did. I was amazed and could not believe it. I have a hard time remembering after that. I think because of shock, especially when I heard about Flight 93, and the Pentagon. I felt helpless because of being so far away. My heart was heavy with sorrow for all those people. It still is one year later. If I did not have children, I would've definitly gone to New York and helped out. I was lucky enough to be home and my mother came over to visit my apartment to tell me what had happened. She came into my bedroom where I was sleeping and said "They got us, its horrible" I jumped up out of bed and was totally freaked out because I had no idea what had happened. It was only 9:30 so all of the damage had been done but only tower one had fallen by then, so we knew what was meant to come. All I could think of was did I know anyone on the planes, and about all of those poor people who were lost, and would never be back. All of those young people, workers, children on the planes and families. The Firefighters and police who risked their lives and died for our country. I will never forget that day for the rest of my life. I indirectly knew 3 people in total who were either in The World Trade Centers and people on the planes. One was on the plane that was suppose to go to California leaving Logan in Boston. She was a good friend of my cousin, she had just graduated from Boston University and was going back home to California to visit her family, she obviously did not make it. I also knew of 2 people through friends who were lucky enough to get out the Towers alive. It is a harsh and cruel world that we live in and we need to be thankful everyday that we wake up in the morning and are alive. I know for a fact that the people who died it must have been awful for them, but it is much harder for the families that are still here and for the "survivors", they will always live with this awful time in all of our lives. The USA has changed forever, but we are strong and it did nothing but bring us all closer together. A year later I still remember, and I have cried. I will always cry, but more importantly I will always wear my red, white and Blue proudly and say GOD BLESS THE USA. It was the third day of a research trip I had undertaken to conduct oral histories and collect documents relating to a book I was writing on the Three Mile Island nuclear plant accident of 1979. After doing an extensive interview in Knoxville, TN on September 9 and 10, I had driven in my rental car to Davidson to visit my son, a student at Davidson College. I awoke early on the morning of September 11 because I was driving to Aiken, SC to conduct another oral history and then to Atlanta to do research at the Jimmy Carter Library. My plan was to make it to Aiken by lunch time and then to Atlanta in time to see a baseball game between the Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies, for which I had purchased a ticket some weeks earlier. I looked forward to seeing the game because I had a great seat and the two teams were competing for a berth in the playoffs. The morning started off routinely enough. As soon as I got on I-77 north of Charlotte at about 7 a.m. to head for Aiken, I hit a huge traffic jam. I felt right at home; I live in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. and this was just like my daily commute on the beltway. When I finally made it through Charlotte, conditions improved greatly. As I drove south through and beyond Columbia, SC, I found little traffic, and to my annoyance, no radio stations that I cared to listen to. So I turned off the radio and cruised silently through sparsely populated south-central South Carolina. When I got bored enough, I decided to try to radio again to see I could find something that interested me. As soon as I turned on the radio and heard the tone of the announcer?s voice I knew that something was dreadfully wrong. A woman (I think) was announcing that President Bush had been informed and had left the school he was visiting in Florida. Informed of what, I wondered? I soon found out when the station switched to reporters in New York who were describing the attacks on the World Trade Center. Information was sparse at that point, but it seemed clear that planes had deliberately crashed into the towers. Within a short time (I have no clear recollection of the exact times), I listened with horror to the live account of the collapse of the first tower. As I tried to assimilate this information, the station switched to the news from Washington. The sequence of events is vague in my mind?I might have heard about the attack on the Pentagon first. But the anxiety and incredulity I felt are still very vivid. With heart racing, I tried to call my wife, who works in downtown Washington, from a gas station, but of course I could not get through. So here I was in the middle of nowhere, worried and helpless, with nothing to do but drive on. As I neared Aiken at about 11 a.m., I called John Austin, the subject of my oral history. We agreed to go ahead with our plans, and I drove to his house in the lovely and, at that point starkly serene, town of Aiken. From his house I was able to get through to my wife, who had had a long but uneventful trip home on the subway. She had also talked to our children and other members of my family. At that point I felt reassured about the safety of my family. The horror of the events was still difficult to fathom, however, especially after seeing films of the attacks on the towers for the first time on John?s television. John, his wife Paula, and I had lunch at a restaurant in Aiken. We talked about Three Mile Island, which had taken on somewhat less urgency in my mind over the previous couple of hours. Nevertheless, it was a pleasant and welcome interlude, and I learned some things that were useful additions to the research for my book. Then I hit the road (namely I-20) for Atlanta. Once again, I traveled though lightly populated regions, and to my frustration, sometimes had trouble finding radio stations that carried news about the attacks. I did learn, however, that the Braves? game would not be played. This came as a relief because I wasn?t sure that I wanted to sit in a crowded stadium that evening, even in a great seat. Perhaps especially in a great seat. I spent the evening of Sept. 11 watching televison in my hotel room. I wasn?t at all certain that the Carter Library would be open the next day and I was increasingly uncertain that I would be able to fly home from Atlanta on Sept. 13, as I had planned. The following morning Atlanta seemed amazingly normal, which was a source of considerable comfort. The Carter Library opened on schedule, and the staff, who did not realize that I was on an extended trip, was surprised to see me. They had assumed that I was coming from home and would be unable to fly to Atlanta. It was not, to put it mildly, a busy day at the Library?I was the only researcher in the reading room. The service I received from the staff archivists exceeded even their usual high standards, and I found documents on Three Mile Island that were of interest and value. As I watched the news in my room that evening, the impact of the attacks hit close to home. The television networks ran streamers that listed the names and home towns of the victims, and I was unpleasantly jolted to see that the list included a family from my home town of University Park, Maryland. University Park is a small and close-knit community, and although I did not know the family personally, it was shocking to see their names. Charles Falkenberg, his wife Leslie Whittington, and their daughters Zoe, 8, and Dana, 3, were aboard the plane that was flown into the Pentagon. Whittington was a professor at Georgetown University, and she and her family were on their way to Australia as a part of a sabbatical leave. They had taken off from Dulles airport for what was surely a much-anticipated adventure on the other side of the world. They got only as far as the Pentagon, and the thought that haunted me was that I hoped those two little girls did not understand what was happening. The thought that angered me was that the terrorists boarded the plane with that family, and other families, fully intending to murder them. On the evening of Sept. 12, it was still uncertain when the Atlanta airport, like all other airports, would re-open. I decided it was better to drive home than to wait to see if the airport would be open in the morning. I called Avis, from whom I rented my car, to explain my situation. To the company?s credit, the Avis representative told me without hesitation that this was a national emergency and I was welcome to drop off my car any place that was convenient. The following morning I left my hotel at 6 a.m., and drove for twelve hours to my office in Rockville, Maryland. It was a source of considerable relief to find that the 18-story building in which I worked was still standing. We were in total shock. The news continued to get bad. My mother was told that her chemo was not working and that we needed to choose another method to cure her cancer. Twelve days later, my mother passed away in her sleep. The cancer did not kill her, her heart just gave out. I didn't lose anyone I knew on September 11th, but the days, weeks and months that followed I lost my mother, mother-in-law and Aunt. I can only imagine what the families who lost their loved ones on this day felt. What a great loss. Tell us your story: Looking for the 'safe' PBS channels for my pre-schooler, I came across the image of smoke billowing from one of the twin towers. I heard them say it was a plane that had crashed into it and they were discussing the possibility that it was planned! Then, before my eyes, the second plane hit the other tower. The first thing I saw was the twin towers with one of the towers bellowing smoke out of its side. I was apuled at what I saw. My teacher had to turn off the television so we could finish the remander of out testing. When I went to my next class a while later she (teacher) had the tv on and I saw that the second tower has been hit by another hijacked plane. Like two seconds after I saw that the second tower got hit I remembered my cousin was due home today and her plane left earlier that morning. I was so scared! All day our school tuned in to see what new information could possibly come up. It was the only day that every single one of our classmates would not say a word at all not even at lunch. All our faces had the same blank expression like we were all still shocked and trying to see if this all really happened. As soon as I could I called my mother to see weather or not she has been able to get a hole of my cousin. The next day I was filled with tears of joy when I saw my cousin's car pull up in my drive way. For the rest of the day we sat at my house and watched the news to see how many people they could save. My cousin was telling me how one of the planes that crased in the tower was the same plane that docked at the same aport as she did .She said she talked to some of its passengers. She told me that this women told her all about her family. Her hushband and three kids. As she was talking to me I saw her eyes fill with tears thinking about those poor people who died. I was sitting in front of the television, mug of tea in hand, waiting to watch the afternoon local news before returning to my desk where I worked as a Race Liaison Officer. I deal with victims of Race crimes and incidents and it soon would become apparent that my role would never before be more needed than it was now. The backlash that would surely follow such a horrific attack would drag down the innocent along with the guilty. I sat in my wheelchair and for a few seconds was bewildered as to why I was looking at a New York landscape rather than a Sussex one. However I soon realised why. I remember thinking numbly, "there's so much smoke, so much smoke, it looks like Smog, I wonder how many people are trapped?...oh my God there's another plane, sweet mother of Jesus, it's going for the other Tower, oh bloody hell, I can't look! I can't look!" But I did look, I didn't even close my eyes, I just looked and looked and looked until my eyes hurt. One of my colleague's came from my office came looking for me as I was late returning to my desk. He hadn't heard the news. I was one of the first people in Brighton Police Station to be aware of what had just taken place. He put his hand on my shoulder and said. "What's happening kid?" I told him and he stared at the television for a couple of minutes and then said. "We better tell the DI (Detective Inspector), I think this will affect everyone, not just the US." I nodded my head. In those first brief few minutes of death and destruction our lives in the UK had changed. And it would never be the same again... My friend called and told me to turn on the tv because the world was coming to an end. I told her..."Stop playing! Girl I am tired and I need to go back to sleep". She told me to turn on the tv because NY (our home) was in serious trouble. I turned on the tv and to my horror. I saw the first tower in smoke with a huge hole. At that time no one knew what really happened until the 2nd plane hit the 2nd tower and still at that time, I had no clue as to what was going on. All I can remember is that the next thing I knew, the screen was completely bogged with smoke. I told my friend "There better be a building there" and when the smoke cleared we both screamed and so did every other girl on my floor. Just watching that and listening to the reporters of the morning show cry as they told what was going was the worst thing I have ever heard on television!! I hung up and ran as quickly as possible to my friends' room and watched 2nd tower fall and we cried and cried. I feared for my mother and sisters who all work in Manhattan. My sisters didn't go to work that day because one was sick and the others son was sick. My mother, however, did go to work and she made it out of Manhattan safely and sound. My father at the time was NYPD and after getting phone calls all day from my boyfriend and friends asking me if I had heard from him, I was prepared to receive the worst news possible because I could not get through to him since he was actually out there helping but in the end, he was safe as well. A friend of mine at school wasn't as lucky as I was to hear about my father....Her father, a NYC Firefighter, never made it out of the building alive.
