Tell us your story: Today is the 5th anniversary of 9/11 and I went to Dizzies Finer Diner, which is restaurant ont he corner near my home on 9th street in Park Slope. It was where I was until about 9:50 AM on 9/11/01 and where someone said as I was leaving that "a plane had hit the World Trade Center." My story of that day is in the archive so there is no need to repeat it. My friend Anselmo, who works at Dizzies, wanted to do something special for today and I said I would bring bring in on my laptop computer some of the 1,000 images I took of the neighborhood in response to 9/11. Some of them are also in the digital archive. Six months after the event I revisited the same sites, and I have been retracing my steps through the neighbohrood every years since 9/11. Today I have a collection of many thousand images of the ways the neighbohrood residents and business people responded and how some of those responses fade and reappear on days like today. At about 7:30 AM I put the laptop on my table near the cash register and turned on the sldie slide and let it run conitnuously until about 9:05. Many people came over and looked. A few of them thanked me for sharing them. I wonder what people will say in another five years when I do it again. Tell us your story: I had just got on the computer and was going to see the last part of Good Morning America and the beginning of Live with Regis and Kelley. I had brought the internet up and had not turned on the television, when my cousin, Shirley Stringer Schrimsher, sent me an instant message and said to turn the Television on because there was a problem at the World Trade Center. When I turned it on, the first plane had already hit, but the second one had not. As I watched I was stunned as the rest of America and the world was when the second plane hit the 2nd tower. It was shock and unbelief that something so horrible was happening here in America, the land of the free. This is the country that millions of people have come to live and raise a family and have freedoms that other countries do not have. This is the country that my husband's grandfather came to live to have freedom from oppression. As the program went on we learned about the Pentegon being hit. We also learned about the hijacked plane that was flying in Pennsylvania which crashed due to an undertaking by a group of courageous passengers. The thought of the lives of innocent people, especially the children, being taken by an act of horror such as this is still unreal. What kind of people hate America so much that they take not only their own life, but the lives of innocent people? Our country has had open arms for all kinds of people in all walks of life. How dare someone do this to our country and our people!!! It's been a year, but it has changed the lives of not only Americans, but people everywhere. Nobody is exempt from this kind of hatred and misguidance. We are not promised a tomorrow. We need to love and appreciate our families, friends, and neighbors. The regular scheduled program was not on. I saw the first tower of the World Trade Center smoking. I did not know what had happened until I listened further and as I watched and listened a second plane hit the second tower. I experienced disbelief, shock and horror as I thought about the people in the buildings. Then it was reported that the planes were airliners carrying passengers. The enormity and tradgedy of the event began to sink in. All those people on the planes and what they went through and experience during their last moments. As I watched the towers smoking and burning, I briefly wondered if they could collapse and quickly dismissed the possibility. Not too long after that, the first then second one collapsed and I could not contain my emotions. All those people trapped, killed. All the people who were losing their fathers, mothers, childrens, husbands, wives, fiances, etc. How awful this event was that was unfolding before my very eyes. Then the news about the Pentagon and Shankesville, Pa. Disbelief again that four airlines could be hijacked the very same day and all used for such ill intentions. My heart goes out to all those who lost loved ones. I pray for them in their pain that God will comfort them and give them strength for each day. I went to my first class, and about 1/2 hour into my second period class, science, in the middle of a lab, the science teacher next door came in and told our class the news. I could feel my eyes filling up with tears right then. New York City had been attacked. A thousand things went through my minds, and it may seem weird but I guess you can say I was having flashbacks of New York City...Central Park, Yankee Stadium, Madison Square Garden, flaggin down taxi's late in the middle of January after getting out of a Knicks game. Jeez, I didn't know what to think. Then it hit me. My family was so close to the city, that at any given time someone in my family could have been in the city. I'm from Greenwich, CT so New York's our backyard and especially growing up a big-time Yankees fan we were in the city A LOT. Now i was standing in science class, not wanting to believe anything, and i had the people in my class, plus my teachers it would all be alright, besides, it was't Boston.(i live in Cape Cod Mass now). I wanted to scream at them, BOSTON?!? I knew it and they knew it that i didnt grow up on Boston, how dare they tell me everything was going to be okay. Their family was all within 20 miles of our school working in Cape Cod. As the day went on, in between every class i pulled my cell phone out to call my mom, see what her reaction was.....and then i remembered OH MY GOD my mother was supposed to be flying out of Boston on the 11th, but she ended up cancelling a few days before. My heart practically stopped. That day they let us out of school early. I tried calling all of my family and friends in CT, but everyone's cell phones were not in order. I will never ever as long as i live forget the 11th of September in 2001. For once, i was thrilled not to be so close to NYC. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a registered nurse and was on duty during the attacks on September 11, 2001. I am charge nurse responsible for 50-60 elderly residents in a long term care rehababilitative nursing center. There is a television in one of our residents lounge areas across from the nurse's station and next to where I usually have my medication cart during my morning med pass. That is what I was doing that morning and preparing to go to our 9:00 a.m. morning discussion of all pertinent new information regarding our residents. All of this was unexpectedly interrupted as one by one staff members were stopping to watch the news bulletins or what was taking place in our country. Several of us hugged and cried as we watched in horror and disbelief the massive destruction that was happening before our eyes. For me personally it was a day I will never forget and I have been changed in ways I'm still finding out one year later. These events took place fairly early into my long 12 hour shift. I needed to compose myself and carry on to deliver medications and reassurance to my residents. Many of them were quite aware of the situation as most of them have televisions in their rooms. My day stretched ahead filled with much uncertainty and an overwhelming feeling of needing to see and be with my loved ones. The best I could do about that was take a few minutes to call my children, husband and mother. That did help me once I was able to speak with them. When you are responsible for the wellfare of other people it does help you to focus on what you need to do. Still as the day and events and stories unfolded I felt helpless that I could not do more. I'm sure many other Americans had similar feelings that day. Thankyou for this opportunity to share my story. It took me awhile to realize what I was witnessing, but it didn't really hit me until I saw the second plane crash into the towers. I still don't think it completely sunk in just then, because I persisted on completing my morning routine as normal. But as the day grew on and the air was thick with that occurence's activites, the horror struck me. For days I was mellowed with sorrow and shock, and at times I sobbed for the tradegy that was so new to Americans. But even so, I felt seperated from it, as though it was happening far away from me and I wasn't too affected by it. That's when I heard a friend of mine at work had a son that worked at the Pentagon when the attack happened there. For weeks his body was searched for, with no words of comfort to the mother. Finally the words none of us wanted to hear were spoken. His body was found, but unfortunately he did not survive the terrorists attack. He was pronounced dead about 6 weeks after 9/11. His name was Matt Flocco. His mother's only son, and friend to many. When I found out he was no longer living I felt the full force of the horror hit me and I once again felt the sorrow and shock of when I first heard of it. It angered me immensely to think that someone I knew was taken away so quickly from something so evil, and I realized that no matter where you were from in America, you could have lost someone in the attacks. You could have known someone who lost someone in the attacks, or you could have been lost in the attacks yourself. I never would have thought that I would've been directly affected from the tradegy, and I wish I wasn't, but it's a sobering reality check. Matt Flocco was a wonderful person, and so is his family. His mother, whose name I'll protect due to respect, is devastated still to this day. And who's to blame her? I haven't the slighest clue to what she went through and still is experiencing, but that doesn't stop me from feeling the pain she radiates from her everytime she's near. Even though America bonded together and finally became a nation again after many years, it still wasn't worth the lives lost. I suppose this piece is dedicated to the memory of Matt Flocco, and to all those who were lost that horrible day. May you never be forgotton, and you're families comforted in the days ahead. I work for the Military full-time and decided to take that week off. That morning I decided to put my military PTS on because they are so confortable and through my hair in a pony tail and the darnest thing I asked my son "is today a holiday"? He looked at me and said "No". To this day I still don't know why I said this. After dropping the kids off, I decided to head for the college so I could buy my book for class. I would say it was probably near 8:50 at this time. I started going thru the radio channels and a man came on and said a plane went into the world trade center. I couldn't believe it. I ran in the book store and bought my book. As I was heading back toward Auburn, MA (I felt like shopping that day) I guess all the planes in the air were ordered to land. I was near Worcester air port and the planes were coming in. I have never seen so many big airplanes coming in all at once. It was a very scary site. The people on the radio were at this time reporting another plane going into the World trade center. I knew right then we were under attach. The first time could have been an accident but not the second. I headed on 290 West and got off on exit 9 which was near rt 12/290 and I stopped at the set of lights and listened to the radio. As I was sitting their a man with dark eyes and arabic features was starring at me. I looked at him but quickly looked away because of the look on his face. It was 0935. As the man approached me because he was taken a right turn toward rt 290/mass pike. I looked at him again and this time he took his left hand and slid it accross his throat like to slit it. It was a matter of seconds I just sat their saying to myself, "He didn't do what I think he did"??I proceeded to the mall and it really didn't hit me until I saw the planes hitting the WWTc on TV. I was scarred and I told everyone about it. What really frightens me is after this man did this to me two minutes later a plane went into the pentagon. Two months later I was sitting at the ford dealership getting my truck worked on and an older gentleman was sitting their too. I told him this story and he told me he was on the masspike and spotted an arabic looking (suspicious) man driving in a white truck and he called the police. All I can wonder if it was the same man who I saw and threated me. It made me feel better but I still to this day live in fear. Rodna M. We had to be there. So we got in the car, and we drove to Stratford, Connecticut, where we always catch the train. And then we rode Metro North right into Grand Central Station. As we walked out onto the Main Concourse, this is what I saw: police officers and some National Guard troops, interspersed with travelers; a huge American flag suspended from the massive ceiling; and digital messages on their schedule boards that read: "For assistance searching for missing WTC family members, go to Pier 34." Then outside, I noticed the quiet. In some ways, it was subtle. I mean, there were people on the streets, and there were tourists, but it was as if the volume was turned down a notch. Things almost seemed more peaceful. Not surprisingly, nearly every storefront window or fa?ade displayed a flag or sign. A number of posters were defiant: "We Will Rebuild." There were reminders of the World Trade Center everywhere ? on postcards and framed posters for sale, and as the background on signs of so many shops. We decided to go up in the Empire State Building, which is once again New York?s tallest building. I was not afraid. I wanted to do it. We noticed security was tight, of course. They wanted to see picture IDs, and then had us go through metal detectors. In the waiting area, they were continuously running a special "virtual reality" ride through the city. Again and again we saw the towers illuminated at night, then by the sun, as a backdrop to the Brooklyn Bridge. I heard two women arguing nearby: "Well, I think they HAVE to rebuild it!" So we got in elevators and headed up 86 floors to the top. The Empire State Building is nothing like the Sears Tower (it?s hard to believe we were there just 3 ? months ago). It?s old, it?s classy, it?s almost creaky. We liked it. There were all of these framed pictures of new York in one of the waiting area. One of them was from a vantage point looking almost straight up at the World Trade Center. But just in front is a sculpture and sign that said, "Peace on Earth." On the top of the building, we went out into the air and looked all around, at all of the miles of buildings and bridges and people. It was sunny and windy up there. Looking south where the World Trace Center once stood, there was an open space in the skyline, from which smoke was still rising. We heard a plane go overhead and both started a bit. I stared up at it, almost in wonder, and watched as it flew above and away from the city. For a moment, I felt afraid. But not terrified. And it felt good not to feel terrified. But still, I think we both felt it was time to go down. Back out on the streets, we decided to do it. We had to get to "Ground Zero." We didn?t want to be macabre or voyeurs or in the way. We wanted to be sensitive. But we still wanted to be there. So for the first time, we walked underground and decided to learn how to ride the New York City subway. In the subway there were all sorts of updates plastered up about new routes or replaced routes, or which areas would be closed indefinitely. But most of them were dated nearly a month ago. The new reality slowly begins to sink in. We came up much closer to the Financial District. Neither Dan nor I had ever been to this part of the city before. We walked for a bit, and then came upon an intersection where the cars were stopped and turned either right or left. Straight ahead, the street was empty, a ghost town, blocked by police officers and National Guardsmen. They let in pedestrians, though. About then I began to feel uncomfortable and a little guilty. But we kept walking. I began to taste and smell something different in the air. I?ve never smelled anything like it. It was in some ways electrical but also stale. I?ve never smelled decay or death, so I don?t know if it was that. But somehow I?m afraid it was. We came to this place where there were just swarms of people. All of the roads to our right, or west, were blocked by barriers that were guarded. Very quickly we saw why. A block or two beyond those barriers was the rubble. I didn?t even get an up close view, but just seeing the site in person was shocking. I don?t even know where to begin. It was smoking, for God?s sake, 5 ? weeks later. Buildings near the site were in bad shape. One looked like just a shell of a building, all black with all of the windows blown out. Another mini-skyscraper had either one side partially peeling off or had pieces of the World Trade Center embedded in one side. I couldn?t quite tell, but whatever the case, it was horrifying. From one of the viewpoints you can see a maybe 10 or 15 story high mound of rubble. The pile was nothing but twisted steel and broken concrete and dust and wires and more wires. I tried not to get a picture in my mind of all the people entombed in there. There were other buildings nearby draped over with something like huge black cloth, as if it was some kind of protectant from all the cranes and other recovery activities going on. The cranes were moving and working, and I could see an NBC news camera trained on them, bouncing back the live images we always see. Then there was the dust. It was still everywhere. You could see it resting in window sills and door frames and in a million other places. Some skyscrapers had window washers getting rid of the grime. In other places, it had just settled like dirty snow. I ran my hand along the sides of a building and stared at the dust on my finger. I had this horrible thought that it was little pieces of people, ground down and fluttering all over the city. But in some ways it?s true. That?s the most awful part of it all. There were signs, cards, letters, pictures, flowers and other messages just everywhere. They were taped on buildings and strung to the road barriers. I saw a banner from Springfield?s North End Community Center. There were notes from all over the country and around the world. Children had colored pictures; there were poems and condolence letters. Everywhere people were standing and staring, taking pictures or video, speaking quietly, fighting back tears. I saw a woman about my age turn to the man with her and hug him. They stood there in the middle of everything, just holding each other. At one spot was a woman dressed like the Statue of Liberty. I guess she?s been doing this for years. And near her a man played "America the Beautiful" and "My Country Tis of Thee" on a flute. Right across the street was a church. Before September 11, the twin towers used to rise far above the steeple, dwarfing it as they did everything else. I kept looking up at the sky at all the empty space. The sky was so blue. I tried to imagine what the buildings looked like there. As I said, me and Dan had never been to this part of New York. It must be so much worse if you can remember. I stood there and thought, "This is where it happened." All of the people in these buildings I see heard a big boom. They looked out and saw smoke. Then they heard another boom. At some point they went outside. Then one by one the buildings crumbled and they ran. The street we were standing on had been enveloped by those massive clouds of dust that turned the day to night. In a small way, that was comforting. Many of the businesses were up and running once again, albeit with signs that said, "Sale ? Goods Damaged in WTC Disaster." And we noticed some people wearing masks for all of that junk that still permeated the air. We walked down to catch a glimpse of Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange. The building really is incredibly close to the wreckage. I?m amazed they got it running again so quickly. Diagnol to that building is the place where George Washington took oath as the first president. I forgot New York used to be the capitol of the U.S. I keep hearing people say it?s the capitol of the world. That?s why these bastards did this. The sun was going down and our feet were tired. I stood at a barrier and took one last look at the mess. Tears were crowding my eyes and I tried to hold them there. For a moment I glanced briefly at a police officer watching the crowds. He looked me right in the eye for a second as if to say, "I know." I thought of him watching all of these people, every day, see it for the first time. Then we walked north and as we did the smell began to fade and then past the barriers there were all of these cars and honking horns and it was just regular New York. Behind us was hell, and it seemed sadly that they were now used to hell and were just going about their business, very organized and focused, of eventually getting rid of it. It?s going to take so long to clean up that mess. Seeing it made me so angry. How can anyone think they can get away with such an act, or that it?s justified?! I will never forget the smell or the dust. Or all of those National Guard troops, riding in jeeps, as if we were somewhere very far from downtown New York City. I don?t know if I?m glad I went. I came upstairs from my basement apartment, and was surprised to see my dad. He works in D.C., recently leaving a job at the Pentagon, but was never there by the time I was up for class. He explained to me that he was home waiting for a floor repair company to come and replace our kitchen floor. None of the televisions were on in the house, and just as I was getting ready to leave, our phone rang. My dad picked it up and the color drained from his face. I remember him saying, "What are you talking about? Are you serious?" and then him turning on the television. We were shocked. The first iamge we saw was one tower of the World Trade Center in flames. Two minutes later we saw the second plane fly in from the side of the screen, and couldn't turn away as we saw it strike the second tower. We just couldn't believe our eyes. Then came the next wave of horror. All of a sudden the picture changed, there was a building in DC completely engulfed in black smoke..."the Pentagon....." my dad barely got the words out. At the same time I was setting down my bookbag, my dad said, "you're not going to class today". I assume the look on my face told him that I had no intention of going anywhere that day. My mom, who was in DC at the time, and also the one who made the phone call to the house, was trying her hardest to get home. She wasn't near the Pentagon when it happened, but because of all the traffic it seemed to take forever for her to get home. I had just walked into class, and the TV was on and everyone just stopped and watched the TV. On the bottom of the screen it read that all the airports were closed, including the capitol city airport. My friend Deepa and I just looked at each other in shock. When my teacher Mr. Swan finally got everyone to sit down, we just watched the news all hour. It was hard for me to realize what had happened. All day in school we didn't do anything except for watch the news. In my fifth hour Algebra II class, my teacher's daughter had been flying that day, and he was leaving so he could try and contact her. I didn't have any family, or even know anyone in New York or in Washington, however, my boyfriend at the time lived in Pennsylvania, and I was frantically trying to find out if he lived anywhere near where the plane crashed. He didn't. I called him right when I got home, and I felt very relieved to hear his voice, even though I knew nothing had happened to him. I then called my Grandma to see how she was doing. She didn't really know exactly what was happening, and I had to tell her exactly what was going on. After that I called my dad, who lived a little while away in Dewitt, he was fine. The news that night was pretty horrible to see, it killed me that they kept on showing the same footage over and over again becasue they had no new information. I could see that Tom Brokaw had had a long day, he had a disheveled appearance on the newscast. To me, the worst thing was hearing the bodies hit the pavement, or seeing the people jump out of the windows. It also made me sad to see all the hospitals being prepared for a rush of people that never came. I thought for sure we would be going into war very shortly. Even though I felt sad for the people that had died, I never cried. I think because it never really hit me the gravity of what happened until months afterward. "Anybody with friends or family who work or live in or around the World Trade Center, please come to the cafeteria." I got reall worried because they had just announced the attacks. I did not have friends or family there, but I did have a fireman. He was still in the time of probation because he had just joined the FDNY. When I heard this, I flew from school and ran all the way home. After being reassured that everything was going to be ok, I returned to school. Little did I know, Mike Haub was missing. After about one month, the family decided to hold a memorial service. I did not attend this because there were over 800 people in a sall church. Right before Easter I got a phone call that was three words long. It was, "They found him." Even though he perished, leaving a wife and two small children, his spirit will always be with us. Not a day goes by that I do not think of him or his family, especially today. Even though I miss him and often cry myself to sleep, I know that eventually I will see him again. I will never forget him, not only because he will be in my heart forever, but because I have decided to join the FDNY Volunteer Fire Department. A little advice for everyone who reads this story of a teenager who has endoured as much pain and suffering as everyone else, "As long as you keep the memories of your loved one(s) alive, you will never forget them. I answered my front door at about 6:15AM to let in my neighbor's children, just like every morning. I went to the television to turn on cartoons for them, along with my two children, just like every morning. It was at that moment my life changed. Both towers had been struck by that time and I ran into the bedroom to wake up my husband. I was shocked, amazed, terrified and as I watched, The Pentagon was struck. I called my father who was still sleeping, "wake up and turn on the TV", that's all I had to say. We ended the phone call with an I love you, we were safe as all of our family is here in Southern California. I continued to watch the horror unfold as the plane went down in Pennsylvania. I decided that I was keeping the kids home from school. I was scared. My boss called and said DO NOT go into LA today for any appointments. He called again after the first building collapsed to inform me that our company had been closed for the day. "Stay home with your family where you belong". I think it was 8:00 or 9:00AM by that time, and frankly, I was still in my robe with no intention of working. Time ultimately stood still. I felt so helpless, so guilty for being safe and for not experiencing the loss that so many fellow Americans suffered. Today I know that I did suffer a loss, the loss of invincibility, the loss of security and the loss of people who died that I did not know but became part of me, part of America. Today I also know that much was gained. I am thankful to all of the firefighters, the police, the emergency personnel, and to the people who lost their lives, and to their families. I am thankful to them for the gift they gave. Within the terror our country formed a unified heart, a renewed love for mankind and a vigor for life as I've never experienced. If it weren't for those who gave their lives, and their families who continue to persevere we wouldn't be as great a nation of brotherhood as we are today. Thank You. Tell us your story: I was in a branch chiefs' meeting and when I came out one of our technicians told me that the WTC building had been hit by a plane. By the time I had walked back to my building, I was told that the second plane had hit. Everyone in the office had radios on. When the plane hit the Pentagon, our director immediately realsed all of our employees. My daughter and son-in-law work for the government in Virginia and also lives near the Pentagon. I tried calling her immediately and couldn't get through. Our grandson is at day care there also. My husband works in Rockville for the county government and his office is on the 14th floor. He could see the smoke from the Pentagon, but said there was no smoke coming from the areas where my daughter and son-in-law work. My boss was giving a presentation to the NCI Executive Committee which was halted. He came to my office on the way back to his office to ask if I needed a ride home or somewhere since he knew I took the bus to work. I said "Thanks, but I'm not leaving here until I hear from my daughter since at that time I didn't have a cell phone (I do now with a walkie talkie!). They had shut the phones down so I couldn't get to her. Then about 11 o'clock she called me from the day care center saying the had also evacuated within 3 minutes of Pentagon being hit. I told her to quit talking and get out of the area and call from home when they got there. It took them 3 hours to make the 25 minute drive since the roads were closed around the Pentagon. I made it home first to Damascus, MD, since my husband stayed at work with a paraplegic who was waiting for his transporation and my husband didn't want him to wait by himself. I called my parents to let them know I was alright and told them to let me know if anyone else in my family called them since we all knew they were at home to receive and triage calls. All arrived to their various homes and we all called each other as we arrived. I did receive a ride to my husband's office that day from another friend who stopped by my office to see if I needed a ride. It was the most peculiar ride because of the lack of noise in the skies. Everyone commented on that and that continued through the week. My cousin's daughter worked at the building adjacent to the WTC and their stories are very amazing too. My cousin worked on Wall Street also and all of our families were deeply affected by that day, but God was on our side that day, and no one was physically injured in my family. That day changed all of our lives forever. We now have an evacuation plan for all of our family and have adjusted to the everyday way of life that this event caused. We also have an evalucation plan at work and even though this has been difficult to think about and plan for, we all feel better that we have done something positive to make sure our families carry on with our daily lives. Living in the Washington, D.C., area and working for the Federal government puts a whole different perspective on our day-to-day lives, one that I never thought would have to be dealth with, but we are. I drove by the Pentagon on the way to my daughter's home in early October after 9-11. I cried when I saw the building. I also was amazed that more people didn't die because of the highway in front of the building with all of the traffic at the time of the morning, and how the plane didn't hit that highway is unbelievable. A lady I rode the bus with said her husband was sitting on that highway and still can't talk about it. He saw the plane hit. But the government employees in the area who work so hard are now concerned about A-76 outsourcing, so that shows that people have a way of making it through just about anything, but will NEVER forget.
