Tell us your story: I awoke to a phone call (about 7AM Pacific time) from my husband who was in Melbourne, Australia on business.It was about midnight in Australia. He said " turn on the television. The World Trade Center has just been hit and I can not come home,(He was suppose to fly home that day on United Air Lines).He fly to Sydney and then after 5 days of waiting flew on to Berlin where he had business the next week. I watched in horror as the second plane hit and then the towers falling to the ground. I felt like I was watching a movie, (but it was real. My children live in Arizona and Idaho, so I was all alone and did not know when my husband would be able to come home, but was thankful that I still have a husband and he did get home about a week and a half later. I pray for those who were not so fortunate. Tell us your story: I was in bed with my 6 day old baby girl when my boyfriend called form the golf course that morning to tell me what he had just witnessed on tv. I didn't know what to say-it was awful, I turned the tv on to see what was happening. I watched in horror as another plane crashed into the other building of the world trade center. I called my sister in law to see if she knew what was going on and we just couldn't get over what was happening right before us on tv. All I could do was cry, and hold my baby close and wonder what kind of world I had just brought her into, and think about how unfair life can be. Tell us your story: I was teaching a group of new employees about our company policy and safety matters when a co-worker came out of his office and announced that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Chills went through my body as I asked him what happened. He said he wasn't sure yet, as it had just happened, and went back to his office to watch the newscast. I nervously tried to continue the class, but a few minutes later, my co-worker again came out of his office and announced that a second plane hit the second tower. By now we were all filled with confusion and fear, but those feelings only multiplied when Todd announced that yet another plane hit the Pentagon. All of us were in shock and disbelief at what was going on, and we were angry over this spree of attacks on innocent American people. Living and working directly across the river from the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida, brought along another set of fears. What if the terrorists were planning an attack on the Space Center? What if something like what happened in New York and Virginia and Pennsylvania was going to happen in our own back yard at any moment? The thought terrified me and although I was glued to a television set in one of our buildings, I had this dreaded feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had to constantly look over my shoulder, waiting to see or hear the destruction of the Vehicle Assemby Building (where the space shuttles are stored) across the Indian River. Thankfully my fears were not realized, but my fears were very real, as is the pain I feel for my fellow Americans...for the families that are missing a loved one from their dinner tables; for the fire departments and police precincts who are missing their partners; for the hurting heart of every person in this world who is grieving the events of that dreadful day one year ago. I've lived in the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center for 9 years, and I've always marvelled at the sights and sounds and excitement of shuttle launches, but none was as sweet as the first launch after September 11. Only a couple months had passed, but when that shuttle blasted up and lit the late afternoon sky, I cried. I cried for all those who lost their lives on September 11 and I cried for all those who gave their lives on September 11. I cried because watching that shuttle reminded me that WE ARE AMERICANS and the spirit of Americans will not be smothered, we will not be held down. The days of this last year have just proven to make us stronger as a nation, stronger in our families, stronger in our friendships, stronger in our marriages, stronger in our goals, stronger in our beliefs, stronger in our values, and stronger in our hearts and our minds. We are Americans and we are strong. We will rise above and without shame thank GOD for our blessings. Tell us your story: on september 11, 2001 i was headed for school when i rushed down stairs and found the tv on cnn and at that moment i saw the second plane hit. the newscaster started screaming and i sat there with a blank look on my face trying to figure out if what i was watching was fact or fiction. i yelled at my mom and she told me a brief synopsis, but i still didnt' believe her. i left for school and all of my friends were in a panic trying to figure out what was going to happen next. i went to chemistry and found the tv on and everyone in my class gathered around with their eyes glued telling people to be quiet so that they could get the whole story. the intercom beeped and our principal came on telling us to resume with class. unfortunatly our teacher did, however it was the topic of conversation all day. even though new york is so far away from texas it was just as scary because i know people in new york. people who are close to me and people that i love. it was an awful gut feeling that swarmed my stomach all day. it helped america realize that we are united we stand, but it took an awful attack to make us realize it. I didn't BELIEVE him. But anyway I turned on the CNN. There I saw the attack on the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! I have since 1973 (with interrumption) been a member of the REBILD NATIONAL PARK SOCIETY, Inc. in Rebild, Denmark, who each year celebrates (since 1912) the INDEPENDENCE DAY of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the 4th of July. In 1973 I returned back to Columbus, Georgia, USA after 3 years in Viet Nam, where I experiencede the American Forces, the Viet Cong and the regular North Vietnamese Forces (and members of the Allied Forces who supported USA) in their war. I Have experienced the horror of war! But on the 11th of September 2001 I saw the horror of war once more. What do they think about the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Do they think that the USA are a Country that doesn't give a dammn about other countries? Then I will give them an answer: The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (and DENMARK)are countries that are filled with compassion for all other countries! I am a proud Dane, but I can't cope with the terrorist that attacked the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the 11th of Septermber in this way. Tell us your story: I was in the refrigeration plant in tower 1 sub basement 4.I was passing through when I felt a slight shifting of the building.I froze right where I stood and listened....nothing.. about 30 seconds past and to my left about 30 feet from me was a stairway leading up to a door. this door explodes off its hinges and white smoke came into the plant.I later on found out the reason there was an explosion was the jet fuel filled the elevator shaft and seconds later a spark triggered an explosion.i stood at the bottom of this staircase wondering what happened.seconds later through the smoke came people who worked beyond that door for the construction company.they were all secrataries,they walked like zombies not speaking I can smell their burnt flesh.one was bleeding pretty bad and i started to walk her to path train station accross the plant.1 woman seemed unharmed and i asked her what happened..she told me a bomb blew up their offices.when we got to the PATH platform i layed the woman down ,she thanked me,and i returned to the blown door to see if i could find anyone else.Sure enough there were more,.the smoke was being sucked up the shaft now and i can see there were no longer any walls just rubble.1 woman was under her desk refusing to come out.after a little coaxing she came and at this point a few of my colleuges,were sifting through the rubble,trying to find anybody .we did about 3 trips .everyone was out.i returned to the plant and called for ems on the radio(walky talky),I couldn't get through there was chaos on the radio.I switched on the am radio we had in the plant to the all news station and heard "ONCE AGAIN A PLANE HAS HIT THE86FLOOR OF ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER".my heart sunk.I said to my self lets get the fuck outta here.i started running towards the area where we had brought the injured when i see about 9 fire men running my way.they approached me an asked "where are we getting all these people from." I told them over there pointing about 25yards away to the staircase with the blown door.they asked me to show them exactly where and I told them "there is no one left lets get the hell outta here",they told me to calm down and lead them to the offices beyond the blown door.I said "ok lets do this " so we start running for the stairs as we started to ascend the lights went out just the little exit signs over the doors were illuminated.I started to panic .(I found out later on the lights were lost when the second plane hit.)not one of the firemen had a freakin flashlight ,I couldn't believe it ,i guess in all this chaos they forgot them.the firemen in charge said to me,"wait here we will be right back",and just like that they all ran back the way they came .Not 1 of them stayed behind.I stood there at the bottom of those stairs scared shitless ,in the dark ,listening to the eery sound of the smoke sucking up that elevator shaft.Maybe a minute passed when I said to myself "what am I a fuckin' idiot."and proceeded to run past the area where we brought the injured in path station,EMS was taking care of them and for that i was thankfull.I noticed the owner of the deli/restaurant bar was locking himself in . I guess to guard from looters.the escalator leading up to the concourse level was (believe it or not )running.AT this point i stopped and rode the escalator up. Catching my breath,when i reached the top I noticed everyone was evacuating in a calm and orderly fashion.I started to feel a little more at ease.i ran up another out of order escalator to the plaza level and started running towards daylight i noticed debris coming down.as I got closer I realized there were people hitting the ground exploding on impact among office furniture and luggage i was sickened by the sight.I waited for a lull and ran for it out the doors to the open air it was chaos fire engines all over people screaming.i looked up and saw both towers on fire,i couldn't believe my eyes .people were jumping ,I saw a couple holding hands freefalling from at least the 90 -95th floors.I ran to broadway and watched from there i still was in shock,when over the walky talky my supervisor makes a general announcement "all WTC mechanical personnel rally at the pump station".I start running back towards the pump station which is up the block accross from 1 wtc.as i pass 1wtc people are still hitting the ground ,i'll never forget the sound. when i arrive everyones hugging and happy to see each other .i lean up against the wall and slide down on my ass and look up at the towers burning people still jumping. i will finish this some other time i'm emotionally drained just writing this..God Bless Edward J McCabe Engineer October 1987-september 11th 2001 Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. I turned on the T.V. just in time to see the second plane hit the South Tower. I was frantic and scared. I thought the world was coming to an end. My daughter was supposed to go to a class at Bergen Community College but I was hysterical and begged her not to go. For the remainder of the day, I felt numb. That morning I was planning to go there for a open interview day at Borders bookstore. The interviews started at 9 but I was planning to be there early so I can be one of the first in line. By some mystery I didnt wake up when my alarm clock went off at 7:30. At 8:30 I recieved a phone call on my cell from my best friend telling me I was late. I decided not to go and instead stay home and work on something closer. I turned on the T.V. and all that was on was news. I was confused, what was going on? They were talking about how some planes were hijacked. Next thing i know a plane is being flown into Tower 1. i was in shock. I just sat there on my couch and watched the screen as the reporter confirmed that a plane had just ran into the tower. Then another plane flew into Tower 2. It looked like a scene from a movie. I couldn't believe my eyes, the towers were burning. I couldn't tear my eyes away, it was surreal. Then they fell, one after the other. It hit me then, I could have been there. Tears rolled down my eyes and I started screaming "why?". I called my brother-in-law, since he was going to be down there, I felt such a sense of relief when i heard that he was back uptown and away from danger. I tried to call my best friend, who went to Bergtraum High School, but i couldn't get through, all circuits were busy. I was worried sick until that night when he called me and told me that he was alright. The school had been evacuated when the first tower was hit. The next week was a blur. I actually don't remember what I was doing, all I remember was thinking this isn't real. It couldn't be. I finally cried on the 6 month anniversary of the attacks. I went to Battery Park City and was at the temporary memorial of the bronze statue that had survived. Just seeing it made me so sad, and I cried. Even now, I am still thankful that I had woken up late. Maybe God was looking down on me that day. Tell us your story: I remember having breakest and turning NBC for the morning's news and apparently a hug 747 had later crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. I was confused as to what was going and I'm thinking "how could that have happened?" I later heard about the Pentagon. Something didn't smell right after that. Later when the second tower was hit you know it as not an accident. Again later in the morning, before I went to school I learned of Shanksville, PA's crash in the field. I was actually thankful that nothing else was hit. When I got to school, I walked by office to see that the people inside had brought small travel TVs (about the size of a small crate) with them, they were as glued to the news as I was after I had finished school for the day much later. After I got home I was unfortunate enough to see 7 WTC fall, and I thought "how many more?.." A few nights later, after Conan O'Brien had come back, I saw him give this heartfelt message about everyone on the show acting like a jackass for entertainment purposes, but they took this very seriously, considering they lost some 3000+ New Yorkers alone, even a writer of the show "Frasier". I just find it funny as time goes on, we seem to forget how unified we were. The whole of congress was singing on the front steps, but now we are back to square 1, with the war in Iraq over, we are back to petty squabling among Republicans adn Democrats, its makes me sick. The Dem. & Rep. were behind Bush so much, but now its nothing like that. I wonder how long unity lastes after Pearl Harbor was? I had woken up at 8am L.A. time, and panic instantly set in. I had no idea what happened - I thought maybe a family member had died - until my husband turned on the television. Now, I work in the Century Plaza Towers (used in the opening of "LA Law") here in L.A., and they look very much like a miniature World Trade Center. Since I am not familiar with New York, my first thought was that we were watching a movie of my building. When my husband said it was real and he started crying, I thought they were my buildings. I instantly called the office, fearing all of my co-workers dead. I was scared to death. My beautiful buildings, I cried. My friends. My lifeblood. At that moment I wanted to die myself rather than believe terrorism on this scale was even remotely possible. However, I have to admit that when I finally realized it was not Los Angeles but New York I was relieved...until the Today Show indicated that an estimated 50,000 people worked in the World Trade Center. I cried even harder, repeating why? Why? Why? over and over again. I wished it had been my buildings. I called Ana, my best friend who is a flight attendant with American Airlines and is based in Chicago but had flown to New York the day before. She had Sep. 11th off, but knew one flight attendant who she thought was on one of the planes. She cried and screamed and was completely incomprehensible for nearly an hour. I tried to be brave for her. We both had friends that worked for both American and United and did not know their fate. For the rest of that awful day my family and I stood on our balcony and watched the Downtown Los Angeles Skyline in the near distance, numb from fear that we would be eyewitnesses to an attack on the West Coast. It was eerie beyond belief to have the TV on, with all the chaos and smoke and the horror of it all going on in New York, while my home skyline stood still and quiet and as beautiful as a picture postcard. I did not sleep that night, along with many others across America. The next day I had to work, as we had people on flights that we had to reschedule. Let me tell you, driving up to the office - keep in mind it looks the the WTC to a point, but only 44 stories - was truly terrifying. I told my husband to turn the car around, and underneath my sunglasses my tears flowed in an unstoppable stream. I did not know anyone in New York. I just couldn't believe it...and I couldn't go to work, regardless of the fact that all airports were shut down. My desk is on a high floor and faces LAX, and I was sure that I would not have enough time to run if I saw the nose of a 727 looming in my windows. I thought I was going to die. I thought my husband was going to die...he works in a hotel where the King of Jordan happened to be staying, and since Osama Bin Laden and he are enemies, I thought the hotel was going to be blown up. I feared a lot of things, but I eventually went to work after putting on a brave face. On September 13th, I was at work and on the phone when the power suddenly went out. Normally I would have been just annoyed, but not this time. I called my husband and said goodbye. I put him into a total panic because I had told him that when I looked out of my office windows, there were hundreds of people streaming from my building, running and crying into all directions and even into oncoming traffic. It was a nightmare. Being on a high floor, I ruled out jumping and instead headed for the stairs. I was the last one out of my office because I had made that call. People were crying and running down the stairs. I was two blocks away before I breathed again. ...All this because the Department of Water and Power decided to reset the power in our building and not notify a one of us, and the building management had not thought to tell us because it was kind of routine - except it was usually done after hours. Just not this time. The Oprah Windfrey show happened to be taking some tape of our buildings at that time and were caught off-guard. The reason I know this is because about an hour after this chaos I decided to go home, and they were on the sidewalk interviewing people. They interviewed me for ten minutes. All my friends saw me on Oprah the next week during their World Trade center special, during the segment about how we West-Coasters felt about the tragedy...I had a good minute or two of airtime. Tell us your story: I remember I was at home watching television, being in the first three months of my pregnancy with my fourth child I was always tired on the couch. I remember seeing the news broadcast and not really understanding what had happened until about the 3rd or 4th time of seeing the footage. By then, my husband being a Ligonier Police Officer had been called by the Department, was put on alert. Ligonier, IN being a very small town has a high Arabic population. I remember my Son being in school in first grade and I was terrified to be away from him. I was contimplating whether or not to go and get him, but when my husband got the call from the department I was terrified and called to school to inform them I was coming to get my son. They were very sympathetic with me and gave me not trouble. The children were not given to much information on the matter and the staff handled it very well as not to scare the children, I was very greatful for that. After having my son with me I prayed for the situation in NY but also prayed for the situation in our own area. We were not just in the stix anymore, untouched, everyone was vulnerable. I am greatful for my faith in Jesus. He is my protector. His word says that he will make my enemies my footstool. He is my protector and with him I tried to instill in my terrified children that God would be with us no matter what as he was with those in the twin towers that day. The scriptures are very clear that America will protect Isreal. I know that we will stand strong, the bibles says so and it has never been wrong. My faith in the Word of God has kept me strong and it what will keep this Great Country of ours strong as it did from the day it was founded, "In God We Trust" this is what our country was based on, this is what will keep us strong. On September 11, 2001 I was living in Queens and I was on the E train heading to work. I was in a hurry because I was already running late when the train stopped at Queens Boulevard and just sat there. Eventually we were told to exit the subway. As I came above ground there were were people everywhere. I didn't pay much attention, this is NYC. I kept trying to get a bus into Manhattan because I was late for work and no one really knew what was going on. A bus driver told me "The WTC has been hit!" He even showed me the smoke billowing in the air. I didn't believe him. I told him to stop joking, that was impossible, I didn't have time for this, I was late for work. After attempting many times to find a bus I just stopped and I started to listen to everyone around me. They were all saying the same thing...we were under attack. I was shocked. I tried to call my boss, my friends, my mother but my cell phone was dead. I eventually made it home and I put on the television set. The second tower was falling right in front of my eyes. I tried to call my sister, she lived in Washington DC. I couldn't get through. My roomate had made it into work. I manned the phone lines at home. That Friday the two of us walked down Lexington to see what we could do to help. we signed up to volunteer with the Salvation Army, we read missing people posters, we looked for people we knew, we managed to push on...... On September 11, I had been in the USA for about two months, and was staying with my friend in California, after having visited other friends on the East coast. In fact I'd flown out of Boston a few weeks earlier. I have severe tinnitus and insomnia, andhad just managed to get to sleep at about 6.30 am when my friend knocked on the door and then moe or less burst in, babbling about planes hitting the WTC and the Pentagon, and one tower collapsing and how he was sorry to wake me up, but this was the biggest news story since Pearl Harbour. My head was screaming like a banshee, but I staggered downstairs in a daze and watched the telecast coming live from New York. Some 15 minutes later we watched the second tower come down, live. I have to say that is the most compelling image I think I have ever seen on television, including the first moon walk. Like millions of people I suppose, we spent the rest of the day in fron of the TV watching updates. Finally Brad decided he couldn't stand it any more, and we went out to get something to eat. I suppose it was an indication of how upset he was that I think it was his decision to go to Taco Bell. Normally I'd have to drag him kicking and screaming in there, as he loathed the food. I remember it was pretty busy, but also very quiet, and nobody was talking about the attacks. After having been saturated with it for 10 hours on TV, this seemed almost surreal. There had been a similar sort of event, on a much smaller scale of course, in home community of Hobart, Tasmania in 1996 when a gunman went on a rampage and killed 35 people. After that strangers would come up to you in the street and start talking about it, and it would all be very emotional. But after 9-11 it seemed more like nobody knew how to react; as if we were all almost scared to bring it up. Instead US flags started appearing in catr windows, in the windows of peiople's houses; people would be selling US t-shirts in the carparks of supermarkets. The local copy shop, rather tastlessly I thought, was selling laminated copies of the front cover of the newspaper from September 12. I stayed with BVrad for another 3 weeks before flying back to Australia, where I was amazed to find people seemed perhaps more openly obsessed with 9-11 than they had been in the USA. There was a very great deal of solidarity and sympathy for America back in Australia at the time. I remember the eerie emptyness of LAX on October 1st when I flew out. I suppose that my emotions as a visitor must have been different to most Americans - though I had been to the USA so many times that I thought of it as a second home. My emotions at the time... it's difficult to explain. I think the sheer scale of the thing was ovewhelming and rather numbing. I didn't feel terribly frightened or angry or emotional most of the time at all. However, sometimes some 'little' thing would hit me, like buying Newsweek and seeing the photos of people jumping out of the burning towers, and suddenly it would hit me in the guts really hard. I guess watching one person jump from a building brings it home much harder than watching a building collapse from two miles away. I suppose if I had a dominant sensation in those weeks it was that something had changed. What I don't think many of us realised at the time, was just how long-reaching and fundamental that change would be. What did they have to gain? Why? As I was sitting at my desk listening to the news on the radio, I was in tears and didn't really notice until someone asked if I was ok. I was then instructed by my boss to lock the front doors in the lobby. I spent most of my day in a conference room watching the coverage. I just couldn't fathom the grief and pain that they were going through. Knowing that they would probably never see there family again. Wishing that they were running late and that their lives could have been spared. My heart was actually breaking for those that had lost their lives. Also for the people that had loved ones in there and not knowing if they were all right or even still alive. I was saying prayers for people that I didn't even know and knew that they were heard. I knew that beyond the grief there would be peace. I felt that. Knowing that they will indeed see their loved ones again brought me comfort. I have a friend who lives in New York City and not knowing how far away she was or if she was injured. Looking back on they past year it kind of makes me upset that it took something so tragic to bring the people of the United States together. to actually stop what we were doing and actually become one against something so bad. I just hope that as time goes by we can remember the people that died, the heroes, the families who have lost their loved ones and those children that will never get to know that relative that was lost. Let people know that they snuck up on us once but that it will never happen again. We are a united front that will not stand for this kind of destruction again. I know that in my heart of hearts we will infact get to see those people again and thank them for the way they lived and died. I will alway have a place in my heart for them.
