Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like so many other people, when I heard about the first plane I thought it was an accident. When the second plane hit, I thought the news service made a mistake and reported the same incident twice. "What? Now they say the Pentagon? Well, was it the Pentagon or the World Trade Center," I wondered. It was incredulous that it could have been both. Stunned to hear the truth, we gathered into a conference room to watch the tragedy unfold. I lived in Michigan, so far away, and I didn't know anyone in New York or Washington, or in that Pennsylvania field, but I was grief stricken. I remember kneeling and sobbing alone in front of my TV until I thought I would vomit. I prayed for the rescue workers knowing that if I felt like this, they were grieving so much more deeply. I was so far away from New York and Washington, DC, I questioned why it affected me so profoundly, it didn't really happen to me... But yes it did. It happened to us all. A year later, when I see a slide show and even as I write this... I cry. My tears are proof that I have not healed completely, but how do we heal from something like this? Still, I have faith that we will heal, because even deep wounds heal eventually even if they scar. Out of the scarred earth, will come memorials to the dead, to the ones they left behind, and to the public servants who endured months of combing the rubble. Out of our scarred hearts has already sprung a deeper respect and love for our country and a new realization that we must have the strength and comfort of our God and the hope for new life that He brings. For me, September 11 will always be a day of bitter sadness mixed with a sweet hope for the future. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am an attorney. I was in my partner's office receiving a rather spirited criticism of a brief I had written. Upon completing that less than rewarding conversation, I returned to my own office. Seconds later, my telephone rang and it was the same partner: "Maggie! Get in here." I thought to myself, "Great. Round two." and went to his office. He is a big man and was standing by his windows which offered a panoramic view of lower Manhattan. He stretched his arms out and bellowed, "Where was I supposed to be today." I told him I had no idea and he pointed out the window. I saw the North Tower on fire, smoke billowing out. Instantly ill at what I'd seen, I turned to him and said, "Well, I guess God really loves you, doesn't he?" My boss responded, "Sort of puts that brief into perspective." I couldn't look at the towers anymore for the moment. I was having difficulty understanding what I cas seeing and returned to my own office again when someone called out, "There's another plane! They hit the other tower." I knew of course, as did so many others, that we were under attack. I immediately tried to reach my daughter, in college in Pennsylvania, and comforted myself knowing she was in a rural area of Pennsylvania and, so, I thought, out of harms way. The phones weren't working properly and I was unable to reach her for the next 2 1/2 hours. I heard then about the Pentagon and wondered how many there were and where they were and whether we could fight them and how we would do that and prepared myself to literally take up arms to defend the city. I called my husband and we determined to meet at an Irish bar on Lexington Avenue in the 50's and decide what to do next. There was no public transportation, but the buildings in midtown had all be evacuated and so, thousands and thousands of New Yorkers were in the street, walking calmly north, helping anyone who needed help and reassuring each other. I met my husband at the bar and noticed a huge television was on. I stood at the bar with an Arab woman who was furious and crying and apologizing. And with her was an Englishman, assuring her she'd done nothing to apologize for. And we discussed as a group where the best place was to go to give blood. And had a beer and assured each other we would stand together. I reached my daughter finally, alive and well and crying and exhalting that I was alive. And then I looked up at the giant TV screen in the bar and saw that the Taliban was having a news conference. I was immediately repulsed by their images and their denials of culpability and realized that, as they denied any involvement in the attacks, no one had asked them if they had been involved. And I spoke into one of those pregnant silences when one of them said they had nothing to do with the attack, "Who the hell asked you if you did it?" and the same realization that had struck me, a veteran of criminal defense work for many years, struck my compatriots in that bar and, as a group, we fingered the guilty parties. Finally, once Grand Central reopened, we made our way home and fell into an exhausted, fitful sleep. I awoke around 6 pm and turned to the brief that had started my day. I rewrote the brief, this time inspired by something inside me that said that the best way to honor those who had been through such hell that day was to work at my very best level and carry on the things that we do every single day that make us a great and loving people and so, at 10:30, tears streaming down my face the whole time, I produced an excellent work product and the last image I saw that day, having turned on the television after finishing my work, was the skeleton of the towers standing in the rubble and I knew then the ennormity of the attack on our country, on our way of life and on the city I cherish for its guts, its heart and its utterly unique strength and I thought of the Lady in the Harbor with that "Don't screw with me" look on her face and knew that we would make it through. We have done that. Ten fold. As a nation, as a state, as a city and each and every one of us, on an individual basis as we got to work every day and continue to build this outstanding tribute to human spirit and democracy that is America. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001, at 6:30am, my husband and I left for Reston Hospital in Reston, Virginia for a day that was supposed to be one of the best days in our lives together. I was scheduled to have an 8:30am Cesarean Section for the birth of our second child. My doctor was running late so we didn't get in to the operating room until almost 9am. We still knew nothing at this point. However, I can vividly remember her making converstation with us as she was cutting in to me saying that she heard on the way in that a plane had flown in to the World Trade Center. It did not even register with me. All I could think of was "man what an accident, didn't the guy see the building, like how could he miss it"......It just didn't make sense to me. Our son, William Calvin, was born at 9:23am. It wasn't until I was in the recovery room that my husband told me of the whole tragedy. He came in and said that both Trade Centers had been hit and had fallen and that the Pentagon was also hit. All apparently the works of terrorists. My husband and I both worked at the Pentagon for several years. We met there in March of 1994. My father, a retired Army Colonel, still works there. Luckily, he was in the waiting room with the rest of the family awaiting the birth of his third grandchild. My husband, our families and I were torn. In disbelief about what we were seeing and hearing on every news station and trying to be excited about this new little life that entered this world on a day that will now forever go down in infamy. As our son's first birthday approaches we still mourn for all of those who lost family and friends, due to such grave acts, but we have to rejoice in the celebration of our son's life which began when so many lives ended. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I arrived to my office late that day, it was 8:55a.m. My phone was ringing, it was my boyfriend in New York. He works on Pine Street and his building is a few blocks from the Trade Center, with a window view of the Twin Towers. He was very upset, he told me a plane had just hit one of the towers, and he was very worried about his best friend who worked in that tower. He had to find out if Jimmy was ok, he told me he would call me back in a few minutes. He's next phone call was at about 9:00 a.m. He was pretty sure Jimmy was on his way down from the 25th floor and that he was hoping he was alright. As we were speaking, I heard yelling and screaming coming from the background of his office, as he told me that he was watching a second plane crash into the second tower. His building was shaking, people were screaming, his last words were," I'm outta here!!!!" I heard the phone hit his desk, and then silence. He was gone. I immediately tried to call back, busy. I tried his cell phone was seemed like a hundred times, busy. My best friend called when the first tower fell, I left work and went to her house waiting to hear from Alex. At 12:30p.m. he finally called. He amazingly made it home to CT. He drove over sidewalks, was the last vehicle over 2 bridges, before they were shut down. He was ok. But it would be almost 5:00pm that night before he would hear that Jimmy was ok. Because he worked on Wallstreet, and in the financial industry, he lost at least a dozen, friends and business asssociates. Some he had known for almost 20 years. God Bless all who lost their lives that day. God Bless everyone of the Heros. Thank God, many more people didn't die. Let us never forget!!!! I know I never could. Tell us your story: James Nichols I was on my way down the hall because i was awoke by noises coming from the living room. then I look in the room and all i see is my brother, my mom, amd my dad. all of them were staring at the TV and i could not understand why. so i go out in the living room and the firist thing i see is a plane crashing in to a building. At the time I did not see the significance of the matter I only seen a plane go in to a section of a bulding that looked to be no bigger than 10 stories. then my parrents were talking about someone doing this on pourpose and just thinking about how many people could of died. By that point I was thinking how many people could possably die. Then the camera zoomed out and i saw how big the bulging really was and then saw all the people running out of the building, then saw how big of a deal this really was.then I asked my dad "what Building is this" and he said those are the world trade centers and i said "what are the worold trade centers". Then he said very big buildings. and the way he said it I could he was in shalk.then I left late for school and when i got there my whole 4th grade class was glued to the TV and it pritty much stayed that way for the whole day and the next day there was a lot of rumor about when the next bombing would occur and if it would be worse and all I could say is I HOPE NOT..... I was in school and I heard people talk about New York and a plane crashing into the Statue of Liberty, and some of the teachers saying that this is the beginning of World War III, but what was really happening I could not tell because of the many different stories. When I came home that day, I turned on the TV. I didn't even had to flip through the chanels to find out about the attack because it was on every single chanel. Braking News. The Twinn Towers (not the Statue of Liberty) were falling apart. I could not believe my eyes, and I still could not believe that THIS was really happening. I called up every one member of my family to see if they knew what is happening. They told me that it was not only one crash, but 4. I needed a minute to calm down because it was unbelievable that somebody could do something like that. I came to the U.S. to escape war and now ... was I safe? Was anybody in the U.S. safe that day? I also heard that our Naval Base at Mayport (Jacksonville) was not safe. That day, and pretty much all week long, I got phonecalls from all over the World: From friends, family, and even people I met only once or twice when I was on vacation. That day brought US all closer together and it changed our lives together. Every day I pray for the many souls that were lost on 9/11/01 and for their friends and family who have to deal with the tragic loss of their loved ones. I hope that this day will never be forgotten, and that people always will remember not only our Loss, but to remember the Heroes that sacrificed their lives for our country, our home, our freedom. I am afraid and disgusted, afraid of the familiar as well as the strange. I want to call 911 for help, solace an explanation or something but, it is business as usual, work is usual ?tho I get there later and later every day. I keep trying to figure out in the scheme of things what is important. Just exactly what is important, family, grandchildren, friends, health, poetic songs, and dancing feet and morning prayers. These things are important. On 911 day, I watched the slice and crumble of buildings and my mind could only handle little things, like the probable guys sweeping the floors in the towers and the coffee ladies and the messengers and the security guards glad for a job?and the panhandlers who picked the wrong place and unknown hero?s carrying strangers down stairs and people making cell phone calls to say goodbye. I thought of instant friendships blasted into eternity forever sharing life force energy and I wondered about last thoughts and last gestures and running feet and eyes too shocked to cry and buried subways cars filled with sandwiched people who suffocated underground. And I prayed that the dark was quick I wonder how many people did not want to go to work that day, got up hating their job or got up happy to be starting a new job or an old job in a new position, or were just happy to be getting up in the morning like I am?. My slow moving eyes watched in disbelief, blasted and sliced buildings and burning people on fire with death and wonder about family?s watching family dying and hoping not, hoping they got out in time. Hoping and hoping and? And I prayed that the dark came quick? My head full of cotton, my voice thick and the boss says, ?Do your job, we are a business? and clients calling to complain about services they want to be served and the world is burning and we have to leave the building in America uptown and the boss wants us to finish what we never started doing on 911 day. And I feel strangely detached from the man who is flirting with me from his throne a milk crate, fronting a dilapidated building. And I wonder about his universe being untouched, untroubled. I walked across America uptown, undisturbed looking for friends, friends who speak my language ?cause if this is it I want the wrap and tuck of love. I wanted the wrap and tuck of a little love, a big grand love is too much to think about, little is good enough on this 911 day. My head can only hold little things and not much of that. No wandering thoughts today, no irritating irritations. There is quiet, polite quietness is what is happening on the train and in the streets, people are being soft, well mannered generous, kind to one another. I cry unexpectedly now, quietly so, just sliding tears, and no one says anything. No one says anything. I share; share a newspaper with a stranger on the train who stops writing in his diary to read with me. And we are perfectly strange together. In the morning, the day after 911 and the first of my days of arriving late for work, we can?t find the Twins out the window of the flying train. And I don?t care about being late. I was in government class, we were discussing the Constitution, life,liberty, freedom and the persuit of happiness. Mr. Kamaza announced over the intercom a plane hit Tower One, in New York. I was not worried I assumed it was a small Cesna aircraft. We ended class and I went to Homeroom, he again began to make a second announcement and I knew it would be bad news. He stated a second plane had hit the second Tower. It was ironic that the day my government class was discussing the Constitution, our life and liberties were being challenged. I realized the first and then the second hits were not accidents but terroist attacks. I became worried not only for myself, but also for my parents. What if a plane crashed into the Cushing building I was in or into one of the buildings my parents were in? I was relieved when Homeroom was over and I could go outside where it was safe. During biology class Mr. Bradley turned on the radio and allowed us to listen as the events unfolded. I heard a noise and it reminded me of foil being crushed, it was the second tower falling to the ground. This is all I can remember of September 11, it was too painful and disturbing and I blocked out alot of what occured. I questioned God, why did so many Anericans have to die, the Federal Government's competence to protect us, and why would people kill so many to get their views and beliefs across? September 11 will be like what President Rosevelt said about Pearl Harbor, "will be a day that will live in infamy." My co-workers turned on the radio, we listened to music, then all of a sudden it hit. When the word was out on what those *&^%$#@! did, I wanted to be home with my family. I was both scared, but most of all, mad!! Just to think of all those little children that lost their lives and to those who were waiting for their Mothers and Fathers to come home from work, but, they never will. I thought about my kids. I can't imagine their faces if they new I or their Mom's would not return to them. It was also running through my mind later that night to find out that the people (?) in the middle east were celebrating our loss. All of a sudden now we are the bad guys. They say that we are killing innocent people. I want one person to tell me what crime all those people committed that were on those planes or in the World Trade Center. Being an American is no crime. It is an HONOR! And to all those people, friends and family of all the victims of the major crime that was committed against our Glorious country, our hearts cry out to all of you. This was at 10 in the morning and i had been in classes since 8:30 so I knew nothing about what was going on. I went in to the bookstore and there was a group of girls standing around a radio and they were crying. I asked them what was happening and they told me that planes had crashed in to the World Trade Centre towers, the Pentagon had been destroyed and there was another plane somewhere. The next five minutes are a blur because I was in a state of shock. I somehow made it downstairs to the pub where there were multiple televisions. Everyone was standing and watching CNN. To employ a well-known phrase, it was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I sat down on the comfiest couch in the room, looked at the biggest TV screen in the place, and watched as the North Tower collapsed. I looked through the smoke, trying to make out the South Tower, and then realized that it too had collapsed. The TV then cut to a picture of the Pentagon ablaze, and I realized I had to get home. I returned to my house, embraced my near-hysterical mother, and watched CNN for the next 13 hours non-stop. Tell us your story: 9-11 started like any other day, I got ready for school, went to school, and went to my 1st period class. during 1st period nobody knew anything about the terrorist attacks and I didn't find out until 2nd period when our normally very cheerful teacher walked in and had a sad expression on her face. she told us what happened and turned on the radio. I was so devastated and cried. I was worried about all the people and families but was lucky not to have to worry about anyone I knew. during 3rd period our teacher brought in a television and we were able to see what happened to the twin towers. at the end of the day my mom came and picked us up and it took home. we lived on Fort Benning so it took a while getting through the checkpoints. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It started out just like any other day. My first period class was art 2. It began at 7:45 and ended at 9:10. Next, it was onto World Cultures class. As soon as I stepped through the door, it was chaos. Everybody was sitting in their seats staring up at the television. I soon learned what was going on and took a seat myself. That whole period was surreal. I didn't know whether I wanted to cry or not. All eyes were glued to the television screen. We saw the second plane hit. Then the first tower fall. Finally the second. To watch such a tragic scene on a television screen was heart-wrenching enough. I can't even imagine how the people who were actually there felt. When the bell rang at 10:34, only 5 minutes after the second tower fell, nobody jumped up from their seats to leave like they usually do. Not one single person wanted to take their eyes off of that television screen. Except for lunch and the change of class, I spent the rest of the day watching t.v. Third period English class was horrible as I watched my teacher frantically make phone calls to her family. Some of them in New York. I, fortunately, had no family members affected by this horrible day. But my heart goes out to all that were involved. Now, one year later, we are all moving on with our lives. Looking back, it is still hard to believe that such an atrocious act was committed on our country. But we recovered. As a country, we came together and helped each other heal from the sorrow and grief. We proved that we can be knocked down, but no matter how hard the blow, we will always get right back up. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Nashua NH and was on a business trip , the second week of a two week Western Canada swing. I was to meet co-workers flying in to Calgary on 09/11. I had met older half sister the night before for the first time. She was from my father's first marriage. Obviously, it was an emotional time for me, she is 41 and I am 38, so it's not like we are youngsters. The morning of the attacks, I had taken a shower and saw that that there was a phone message. My half sister left me a message about the attacks and was on the edge of hysteria. I called her back and asked her what was happening and she told me to turn on the TV. I did and was shocked to see the coverage. I then tried to call my wife on a land line and they were too busy so I called on my cell phone. I asked her if the TVs were on and she said yes, and I asked her if they were on the news channels. She said no, since we have two young children, the order of the day was the Disney Channel and Cartoon network. I told her what happened and to keep the kids isolated from it for now. I had to hang up because I was using a digital phone in analog roam and no way to charge the phone. I then was transfixed on the television. I had to extend my stay in Calgary and was mostly watching CNN the whole time, the other networks were showing grisly footage that I did not care to glorify by watching. The shock of the attacks and the aftermath were hard to take so far from home, but my problems were nothing compared to those in New York, DC and PA. I was able to email my co-workers, family and friends that evening, checking on the ones I knew traveled out of Boston, like I do. I was also trying to reach my mother, who was en route to Alaska and I did not know if she was there at the time or not. It was a time of watching TV and email people. I took my meals in the hotel bar, but it tasted like sand, like after a funeral, where you know you should eat, but it is going through the motions. I kept thinking " I fly out of Boston and that could have been me". The outpouring of support from Canada and the Canadian people was incredible. It never did get the play in the US, but that is understandable, seeing what happened. The rally in Ottawa on the National Day of Mourning in Canada was something to be seen. The Peace Tower grounds were awash with American Flags , with 100,000 + people there. I was able to get a flight out of Calgary to Toronto and spent two days there, having a close friend there helped. We talked a lot about the events and it drove home the points about mortality and the need to keep friends and family close. I drove home on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2001. The borders were a mess, everyone from Toronto was crossing in Buffalo and there reports were 5-7 hour waits. I decided to head east instead of south and crossed on the first crossing east Kingston. It was only 20 minutes, but when I finally did cross, the border guard had her hand on her holster, it being unsnapped for easy withdrawal and I had to show two forms of ID. I have never had to do that before at a US crossing. The drive through Upper NY State was surreal. Traffic was light and I made good time. The radio played news stories and outpourings of grief. When I crossed into Mass on I90, I noticed that there were troopers at every bridge. This drove the point home that this was not a dream, but reality and we had been attacked and would not know where and when the next would be. We still don't. I truly hope we can recover, and I hope that time will help those who lost loved ones. I still fly and the events of that day are in back of my mind when I take off, but to not fly and to change would give those who attacked us the victory. I refuse to do that. As a group of us watched in the crowded conference room, we saw the second plane hit. At that point,I tried to comfort those in the room saying it had to be a terrible accident. Then I continued with my delivery of the work my small company had completed. As I went home to Hebron, Connecticut, a small town outside of Hartford, the drama was unfolding on the radio. Traffic was slow and cautious as we all tried to listen and drive, not knowing what would happen next. My job (as a 56-year-old grandmother) was to try and keep everyone I saw (and felt responsible for) as calm as possible. We did close the office and all went home to watch and wait. Then our oldest daughter called. She was pregnant with her first son and had been sent home from her job as Program Director for the Alzheimer's Association. She was crying and asked me, "What kind of a world are we bringing a child into? It's wrong to have children right now." That made me so sad. It's our responsibility to provide a world of love and support for our children. I went to her home immediately to comfort her. The rest of my story is like millions of other Americans. We watched CNN, we prayed, we cried (a lot)we gave blood, we gave money, we gave food and dog food for the rescue efforts -- and we tried so hard to understand why someone would hate us so much. My impressions of the country are that we have grown. We have more compassion. We try harder. We are defiant and scared at the same time. But most of all -- we are intent on building a better world for all the children -- not just my grandchildren, but the children of the world! I had just started a new job at the Naval Hospital aboard the Camp Pendleton Marine Base as a medical transcriptionist in the Emergency Room. I had trained on the 9th and 10th of September, with the 11th of September being a day off for me. I was alseep in my bed when my roommate and best friend, Mark Jones, came running up the stairs to our apartment yelling my name. He knocked on my bedroom door telling me to turn on the television. I did, and as soon as I saw the towers, I burst into tears. I didn't know what to think of it all, just that I was a combination of all emotions; The only thing I could think of was "Where is the President?" Then I heard about the Pentagon, which frustrated me terribly because I am a United States Marine, serving my country for 10 years. As soon as I gathered my composure a little bit, I called everyone close to me to tell them that I love them. I had just selected my three most favorite brushes to use, when I heard them announce on the news that a plane had just hit the first tower. I stood frozen watching in disbelief. As I watched the devastation, my thoughts were that it was a horrible accident. When the second plane hit, I knew that something was terribly wrong. I went into the livingroom to sit down. It was then that I heard that a third plane had struck the Pentagon. I began to shake. I called our neighbor and asked if she thought it was Armegedon. I stayed on the phone with her, because I was alone, and felt more alone than ever before in my life. My husband was at work. I called him and said I thought he should leave work and come home right away. We live close to Los Alamos Laboratory, and I was wondering if I should leave for my own safety. I was concerned that more planes were coming, and when the news announced another plane was still heading at a high rate of speed, it made my skin crawl. My in-laws live in Pennsylvania. I called them to see if they were okay. Then I learned that the third plane had crashed there. At the end of the day, I was too terrified to leave the television screen. It felt unsafe to not be listening to the news at all times. I cried, and then I got angry. We have farm animals, and it took everything in me to go outside and care for them that day. I was glad I did finally, because when I saw that they were still there, I had something "normal" to cling to. When I could breathe again, the first thing I found myself doing was frantically trying to find our American flag. I couldn't find a place to put it up fast enough. The minute I finished doing so, there was another sense of relief. It took me nearly two weeks to walk back into my studio. I was so depressed. I kept telling myself that everything was "normal", but I couldn't accept it. Only when I decided that nothing was "normal", did I find the strength to carry on. I admitted to myself that things would never be the same, but I would learn to deal with the change in my country, and the change in myself. When I returned to the studio, there on the table were the three brushes still sitting on my work table in the same place they were in at the first moment of 911. I had to muster up all my courage to remove them and begin again. It was through the words of our President that inspired me to do so. I was so proud of him I wrote the White House and thanked him. It was time to move on as best as I could. I did - one artistic stroke after another..... Yesterday at the aniversary of 911, I cried again. I still found myself in the same place - the studio with those three brushes. This time was different. The tears were flowing down my face, but the determination to continue to work through it filled my heart. I will not let the terrorists win. I don't know what will happen next. But I do know, I will live my life. I will win the war against terror as long as I can pick up my brushes and paint..... As the aniversary grew to a close, I said aloud, "God, I'm sorry they had to die. I hope they are with You." I'm a better person because of 911. I reach out more to others. I care. And most of all, I try and wring the best out of each day because we never know when everything might change - again.
