We heard from a co-worker's girlfriend about the first plane, and just did not believe it. We then watched in horror on our little black and white tv we have in the lab as the second plane hit. We then got the calls saying a plane was headed for Philly, and could we all please come home. By then we were so confused, but the hospital went into a code for an external disaster, and none of us were allowed to leave. The building we are in is 22 storied tall, so we had no idea if we were a target or not. I was just so worried for my family, my mother was in Chicago for a business meeting. I was very worried for my unborn child, worried I was never going get to meet her. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 started out as one of the most beautiful days, blue skies and perfect temperatures in the 70's. I was driving to work when the first plane hit, the radio announcer only said there was a fire in the WTC, but I tried to find another station to find out what was going on. At one point on my way to work I come to a top of a hill which overlooks the New York skyline and usually the first thing that I see is the World Trade Center. That morning when I got to the top of the hill, I looked in horror because both towers were on fire, black smoke pouring out of them, it was so clear that day that I could see black lines running down the sides of the towers. Noone still was sure what was going on, I listened to a radio station who was watching a videotape of the second plane hitting, and saying that this had to be an attack. I am finally at the library, I run in, frantic at this point because my son takes the PATH train directly under the towers at 8:45 am everyday! Everyone is confused, frightened, and not sure what is happening. I run to my office, dial my son's office, and get his voicemail. I leave a message, please call me, something horrible has happened, please call me! My husband is calling me, crying, frightened, not knowing what is going on, not knowing where our son may be. I have to start my new job as trainer that day, my very first class was scheduled, and people are walking into the training room asking what has happened. My husband calls me to tell me Jason has gotten through to him on his cell phone, he had missed the first plane, he was walking to his office. As he walks out on the street, the second plane hits, and he tells us he didn't see it, but he heard it and felt it hit the building. Thank god my son is alright, now he has to get out of the city, which he does by 6:00 pm by walking down the FDR highway and seeing the most bizarre and surreal sights in his 27 years on this earth. Meanwhile, I teach my class, come out to the reference desk to find out that one tower has collapsed, the Pentagon has been hit, and wonder if this is the end of the world. The library was open all day, we gave a lot of information out to many frightened patrons, but the entire day my heart was broken. I couldn't wait to get home, my husband and I cried, for the relief of knowing our son was alive and home, and also for the many people who died that day. My heart has a huge hole in it even now, and I can still see those towers on fire as if it were yesterday. I am very fortunate that I did not lose anyone I love, but my life has been changed forever. We hung up and I tried to pull up various news web-sites to see what was going on. At the same time, my manager called to say she heard on the radio that the WTC was struck by a plane and that she was going to get a portable TV and be right in. We watched the re-run of the 2nd plane hitting the tower, then watched horrified as first one, then both towers fell. I was numb; having moved to St. Louis from New York when I was 12, I had always figured on going back to do the "touristy" things like visiting the WTC. Now that opportunity has been taken from me, and my daughter who turned 2 months old on that fateful day. I also remember calling my father to tell him what had happened; he said the towers had just been struck, but were still standing. I remember his total silence when I told him we had watched on the news both towers collapse. He quietly said he had to go. Being a first time mother, with my daughter turning 2 months old on September 11, 2001, I was resolved to make sure that I enjoy every day I have with her and the rest of my family. I also can't figure out how I'll explain all of this to her when she's old enough to understand. I saved newspaper clippings and the photo-magazines to document what happened. The real heroes in this world are those who selflessly put their lives on the line each and every day, from local to national, to keep each of us safe. And that there are people in this world who just can't understand the American idea of freedom. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just started my day at the State University At Farmingdale, when I heard that a plane had struck the first tower. We had a TV for school purposes and I was able to retrieve a station that had news about the trade towers being hit. We had it on when the second tower was hit. We couldn't believe it, it seemed like we were watching a TV movie, especially when the first tower fell. I felt like my world was crashing down around me as the trade towers had always been a part of my life. I worked in lower Manhattan when I graduated High School, but they weren't there as yet. I visited the towers first in 1986 with my two children, and then again in 1993 with a friend. It seemed they were indistructable, as were we as Americans. I can't believe they fell, but as any thing including us, all must reach an end. Nothing is permanent, except death. All the faculty and students were devestated about these events and held each other closely, in our hearts, minds and bodies. That night when we were requested to light a candle and stand outside, I was with my daughter, son-in-law and grandchild and each of us cried tears of joy that the US was one. It was remarkable that all people, regardless of race, creed or religion became as one. It should be that way always, throughout the world and terrorism would play no part in anyone's life. I pray to God that all this will end, and my grandchildren will live in peace. But what is live, but evil spelled backwards, so does that mean we will have to have live in an evil place the rest of our lives! I hope and pray that will not happen. My co-worker Arthur had decided to go to his desk and show me the latest pictures of his son instead of heading downstairs to have a smoke. Just as he got to his desk, I felt a rumbling under my feet. At first, I thought it was an earthquake,then as I was sitting in my desk, the whole floor shifted to the left for what seemed an eternity,then it shifted back into position. I looked across at my co-worker Jackie and we were both perplexed and did not know what had just happened.I then stood up and took a look, Mike our manager was streaking down towards the exit doors screaming, everyone out of the building. I screamed the same thing as loud as I could. I then went to the exit door and when I opened it, the ceiling was coming down along with black soot and smoke. I then waited by the door as my co-workers were heading down the staircase, looking them in the eye and telling them not to panic or hurry and waited until the floor was empty. I then began my descent down the stairs. Everyone was calm, noone really knew what had happened. I made my way to the 27th floor when one of my co-workers was standing there and asked me if I could help him get a man in a wheelchair down the stairs(That man was Ed Bugeya). I said no problem, standing there was myself, Felix, Fred, Ed & Abe. I knew we would be there awhile , so I pulled out my cellphone and called my wife to find out what had happened. it was know about 9am. At first she could not find it on the TV but about 5 minutes later she called and told me that a plane had hit the WTC. A plane? I said it out loud, everyone in the staircase thought that it might be a small engined plane. my wife told me to get out of the building, but I told her that I was helping to get a man in a wheelchair out of the building and I would be getting out soon. The only problem is when we asked Ed to let us help him, he kept saying that bldg. security had told him to stay and they would come and get him. So, we waitied. At this point Fred had gone down to alert security. my wife was now calling me every 2 miunutes pleading with me to get out of the building, while trying not to panic me. A fireman passed us in the hallway, I will never forget him. He was a big Irish guy, heavyset,with full gear exhausted from his climb, terror in his eyes,determined to get to his assigned floor. I begged him to be careful and said a prayer that he would be safe. I started to panic, people were opening the doors to the staircase,each time this happened, more smoke billowed in, filling my lungs and making me dizzy. I asked Abe again to let us try and carry him down the stairs,but he wouldnt. His wheelchair had special features which supplied him oxygen, if we took him out of the wheelchair he would suffocate. That is when I said"Ed,if you are not going to let me help you, I have to leave". He said thanks and good luck. Felix and Ed were now with him and I started my descent down the staircase. I must have said the "our father" about 1000 times on my way down. I got to the 5th floor and a stream of water was going down the stairs, as I got to the third floor it was more like a waterfall. I catrefully made my way out down the stairs when I finally made it to the exit. there was a guard standing there telling me to put my head down and run as fast as I can to the breezeway leading to the world financial Center.As I was running there was debris falling all around me. I met up with a friend of mine and we walked out by the Hudson River together. As we got outside I called my wife Dorothy to tell her I had made it out, that is when she told me it was a terrorist attack. There were thousands of people standing around, I finally turned around and looked up to see what was going on. There was fire coming out of the top of the tower, a haze was all around it and it looked horrible. at this point I said to my buddy jeff, lets get the hell out of here(in my heart I felt there was another plan coming to wipe us out). As we were walking away we were discussing how long it would take to repair the damage,we figured a couple of months at best. We started our trek uptown, we then hooked up with my buddy Tony and made our way uptown. When we reached 14th street, we heard a horrible crashing sound, we turned around and we then saw the building we had loved so much come crashing down. At that point I said that we are now "at war". We made our way to Madison squatre Garden where we went into a sports bar and for the first time on a TV screen I saw what had happened. That is when it all hit me. I called my wife and started to cry, telling her my story and asking why this had happened, realizing that I was a target. My brother Dom called me and told me to go to 57th st and meet him at my sister Debbies office. That is when I found out her nephew Joe worked for Cantor Fitzgerald and was on the 104th floor. I knew he didn't make it, but did not tell her that, she went walking downtown scanning the hospitals, trying to find him. My nephew Neil found me and drove me home to my family. There are details I have left out but I can tell you that I am still in therapy and I cannot watch movies with bombs or killing. I have flown on an airplane, but I prefer driving. God Bless America and the souls of the people who died and those who sacrifiecd theirs trying to save others. Ed and Abe died along with the men trying to help him out of the building. Tell us your story: Before I tell my story, I would like to take the opportunity to say to all the people who lost a love one on that tragic day my sincerest sympathy goes out to you all. On that day I was walking to my job. I just came out of the #6 train and was thinking I wish my job was a bit closer so i would have to walk so much. I walked into the building and I remember thinking what a beautiful day it is. As I proceeded to go into the office my co-workers said to me a plane just flew into the World Trade Center #1. I told them and I quote " you guys have lost your minds". One of my co-workers said to me listen to the radio. I proceeded to sit down at my desk and tried to absorb everything i was hearing. I couldn't believe it, I said to myself they did again. I was in complete shock because I was there in 1993 when the bomb went off. My husband was there when the bomb went off. Joining me in the room were my fellow high school classmates who were obviously sharing my same emotions on that September morning. The only thing that separated me from most of the rest is that I didn't cry. In fact, I haven't cried over the year since the tragedy occurred. This disturbs me because I feel as though it is my duty to my country to show extreme emotion with something this horrific. But I suppose I have dealt with it in my own way. I have been sad, confused, and absolutely livid. And though I may not have cried, I certainly have felt the impact of it all and am greatly disturbed. It is hard for me to imagine what the people are feeling and going through that are so closely connected with the September 11th attacks because I cannot relate. I was fortunate enough to not lose a loved one, but I pray for those who did. Hopefully they will manage to get on with their lives, which were so abruptly thrown into chaos in a matter of minutes. And may we all move on, never forgetting the impact this day has on every American or how it has changed the face of our beloved country. Our homeland. The land of freedom and happiness. But I doubt that any of us ever will. May all Americans also learn to rise up and overcome the enemy. We have to let it be known that they may bring harm to us, but this does not mean we will lay down and die. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Like every other morning, on my way to work I was listening to the "Bob and Sheri" show on my car radio. They were into their chat room portion of the show where people call in and discuss all different kinds of topics. Not suprisingly, I don't remember the topic on September 11th 2001. What I do remember is Bob cutting into someone's phone call to let the listeners know that he'd just received word that an airplane had just crashed into one of the WTC towers. I remember thinking, "oh my god, that's horrible" and looking at my clock and trying to figure out what the time change, if any, would apply to New York and wondering if people had started to show up for work there. Bob told us that he'd give us more information as he got it and I continued on to work. When I got to work, I immediately turned on the radio to see if anymore information had been attained, what I heard then sent such a bolt of fear through me that I had to sit down and take some deep breaths. Another plane had crashed into the OTHER WTC tower. I immediately knew America was under attack. Something no person of my generation had ever experienced (I'm 32). We weren't alive during Pearl Harbor and the closest we'd ever come to real time war was watching CNN or of course movies. The one thought I kept having was "This is America, they can't do that to us". Not because I think America is above being a victim but because it was such a foreign concept that someone had attacked us here, on our own soil. America. How was it possible? Things like this just do not happen in America. I was wrong and like the rest of the country, I had a wake up call. One of our most basic and taken for granted feelings was obliterated. WE NO LONGER FELT SAFE. Here in America, fear was now a national feeling. We now had something in common with those countries we see on the news all the time. Those news stories we watched with detachment. Bombings, war, terrorist attacks, fear. Those stories we now understand much more deeply. Americans now have an empathy with other innocent victims who through no fault of their own, look over their shoulders much more often. America as a country and as individuals had been changed forever. Today, the one year anniversary of America's loss of so many innocent people, marks each and every one of us with the residue of terror, yet it also marks us with the knowledge that this nation is what it proclaims to be. Home of the FREE and the Brave, the greatest nation on earth. The nation that took such a horrible, unexpected hit yet pulled together so tightly that the normal reasons for division were forgotten - race, sex, economic background, religion. On this day, once again we are all just Americans. The most blessed nation on the planet. My hope is that this closeness and tolerance will continue to stay strong in our country. That individually we can look at our blessings and do everything in our power to give to and help others not so fortunate. That we can realise that our diversity is what makes us such a great nation and that those ever present "self evident" truths are just as true today as when they were written. All men are created equal. Let's start living our lives believing it. At about 8:45 on September 11th, an assistant ran into the classroom to say that a plane had flown into the World Trade. I thought that it was a small plane. I turned to 1010 WINS radio and heard the account. It was difficult to teach and not wonder what was going on in the city. As my cell phone was not working, I went to the school office at prep time to make calls. While I was there, parents either called or came to pick up their children. I called my aunt-in-law's house, (she works in the WTC area), and was told by her mother that she had not gone to work because of a doctor's appointment. I also called a cousin who works in Midtown Manhattan, and he said that he was fine and making his way home. At the end of the day, a school bus driver told me that listening to the details on the radio doesn't compare to viewing them. Yet, I was in no hurry to go home. So when my principal asked for staff to remain just incase students had no one to get them, I was among many who volunteered. The PTA provided us with Uncle Bens rice bowls. Fortunately every child was picked up, and none of the ones who walked home returned. When I made it home I turned on the television and was saddened,pained, and yet comforted that despite all the chaos, God provided wisdom to our leaders. In particular, Mayor Guiliani who was a calming force. Later that night I heard planes flying overhead. I live in Long Island about 15 minutes away from JFK airport. One of the news anchors reported that calls had been received regarding the planes, and that the aircrafts were transporting medical personnel. I went to church the following Wednesday night and heard from some who had been in the city. Their accounts were nothing short of harrowing. I just couldn't imagine experiencing what they had encountered. As the first anniversary approaches, my prayer is that families and loved ones will have peace. I imagine that many may not have closure, but I hope that peace will take effect in their hearts and lives....the peace that transcends all understanding. I was 11 or 12 weeks pregnant with my first child, at the age of 41, a pregnancy that doctors told me would not happen. Relaxing, watching my usual round of morning talk shows, the news cut to the 1st plane having just hit the North Tower. I turned to my husband and said, "How could the pilot not have seen the World Trade Center?" After the second plane hit, our phone starting ringing, friends who were off-duty flight attendants, family, all in shock. As we live about 12 miles from Manhattan, looking out my kitchen window, we could see the smoke from the Towers. We would see smoke, and smell it, for days to come. As the morning and attacks went on, all we could do was cry. We were bewildered, hurt, scared, helpless. Some friends & family came over to comfort each other. Being a high risk pregnancy, what energy I had went to protecting our unborn child. I couldn't allow myself to fully experience the horror of the attacks. Only now can I cry; I have nightmares of the people trapped inside, of the people who decided their only escape was to jump. Our daughter was born in March of 2002, healthy & full term. For this past year, I cringe when an airplane flies too low over us; it is instinctive. When a news story breaks on TV, our first thoughts are "Is this another attack?" For me, the memories and fear are everywhere. A trip to the Empire State Building means passing the Bomb Squad. Going into a municipal building and having my pocketbook thoroughly searched will never seem routine to me. Although I did not personally lose anyone in the attacks, my heart aches for the families who did. I cry for the victims and their families. Unknowing heroes, may God Bless Them All. A day that felt as thou it was just yesterday. A day that would remain in the history books forever. Many lives were taken, and many hearts were broken. I remember that day as though it was yesterday. It was early in the morning, I was cleaning temporary cement off a patients tooth and I was explaining how her permanent crown should feel. All of a sudden over the radio, Bill Bevens from the station light 98 reported a plane crash. It seems like nothing alarming at first but as his tone in voice altered it made me stop and think twice. I thought to myself why would a plane be flying that low in New York? How could that possibly be an accident? So I shared these comments with my patient and she confirmed that it was an accident and that it was a private plane. I remarked, are you sure, but hopefully, it was not a commercial plane. Then the music progressed as if nothing happened with the occasional interruptions of saying that there was a plane that crashed. By this time I had dismissed my patient and upon my return to clean the room, I had notice that the hygienists had the television turned on channel 12. The horrific picture was unbelievable. They had New Yorkers pointing to the plane stuck in the World Trade Center and exclaiming their account to what may have happened. By this time our whole entire staff was in the break room trying to figure out what might have happen. As more news developed talks of terrorism were in the air. Then out of no where another plane came out of the blue and smashed in the side of the building intentionally. As I stood there I keep telling myself this has got to be a movie or someone?s sick joke of a movie. This can not be possibly happening. I mean not in this age in time, I mean we are America! We are superior to all other countries. Then at 9:40 a.m. the most unimaginable thing happened. The two twin towers collapsed. Not only did this create a gasp, but everyone in the room had tears in their eyes. Immediately, I thought about my dad who lives in the nation?s capital and I darted to the phone. It was so frustrating to dial a number and get a busy signal? It seems like an eternity?. Waiting? waiting?. I could not even imagine the agony and pain friends and family felt waiting to hear if their love one still exists. It turned out that my dad was fine and thank God that he did not decide to take his students on a field trip to the pentagon. A lot of people describe the tragedy of the World Trade Center similar to the feelings of when President Kennedy got assassinated. I now can relate to that incident, I never understood how, or what people meant in other countries by, ?living in fear.? I now felt that I was living in fear and that, ?they,? could attack from anywhere. Not only in the air, not only on land, but by chemical warfare. They could put things in our water; they could put things in our food, or even make us inhale things that were unsafe to humans. The question that still remains is why? And when will this end? I wasn't quite awake yet and mumbled something like I don't think so. He said a plane hit a building in New York and it was on T.V. I got up, went downstairs and started watching the news. He was right. At first I thought it was an accident but after viewing the video you could tell that the plane purposely headed for the tower. I was dumbfounded. Who would do such a horrible thing! As I watched, a second plane hit the other tower. I was numb. It didn't register with me. Attacked? Well, we are in California away from any attacks I rationalized. We are safe. It was like watching a movie. I rationalized it, denied it was that serious, and went about my day. I felt really sorry for the people on board the two planes but it didn't really register with me until that night when I watched the 11:00 news. Then, reality hit. O my God, I thought. We were attacked and all those poor people were killed. Watching the footage of the buildings collapsing and realizing how many people were trapped and buried alive just tore my heart out. I really started praying for their families, for them, for the workers not only in New York but Washington and for the people on the flight that was taken down. As I watched people being carried out of the rubble of the towers I wept and one year later I still pray and weep for the lives lost or forever changed. My children and I commemorated September 11th by attending a patriotic memorial service in Norco. We honored the firefighters from Norco who went to New York to help, we honored the everyday heros who day in and day out dug through the rubble and meticulously found the dead. We honored our country and prayed prayers of thanksgiving for the United States and honored all who have fallen in service to our country. It was done Norco style with horses and horse drill teams (we are a horse town)and music. Every year my family and I will remember and in honor of our brothers and sisters who were killed, we will do something to help others to make this a better world. We will never forget. Our brothers and sisters did not die in vain and their memory will long be remembered. He asked if I knew what was going on and I said "no". He then told me to turn on the TV. At first I couldnt really make out what the burning objects were but as the shot panned out I could tell that they were in fact the "Twin Towers." I didnt know what to think at first I guess I was in shock. I quickly ran upstairs to tell my father what had happend. He was just as, if not more shocked than I was. I had about an hour before I had to be at work and for that whole hour I sat without blinking looking at the TV. Then when I thought that no worse could happen, one of the towers began to fall. I held my breath for what seamed forever as the tower fell to the ground. I turned and looked at my father who had began to cry, having lost his father exactly a year before the attacks and then having this happen must have been overwhelming. Then the second tower fell, at this point I didnt know what to think anymore, "are we going to war?" was the thought that came to mind first. Honestly at this point my emotions turned off and I just stared in shock, it wasnt untill a year later on Septemebr 11th 2002 that I began to look at memorial sites and a sudden rush came over me. The loss of life and all the innocent people who died so needlessly was what hit me first, but after that had passed I beagn to think to myself "I will never see them" I will never get to see the Twin Towers in person, only in books and on web sites will I ever again see those two shimmering towers that seamed to embody all that this nation stood and still stands for. So as I sit today looking at sites about the World Trade Center I decided to write my story, it may not touch any of you in any form or fashon but it is just my story. No personal loss of life, nothing that hits close to home for me personaly but just a story of a man who woke up one morning thinking everything was fine and then turning on the TV only to see history in the making. In the words of my father on that morning of September 11th 2001 "They have awoken a sleeping giant, nothing will ever be the same." I was standing in my kitchen watching "Good Morning America" on T.V. I saw the WTC on fire. I automatically knew that this was not an accident. How could a plane that huge not see the tallest building in the world! Then it happened the second plane hit. I just told my freind we are under attack,somebody want us gone. I didnt know who it was who did it. I just knew i was terrified. I went to my next class when the professor asked if we knew what happened,minutes later the college had to be evacuated. My college is downtown so it was a lot of traffic. I think i went blank because when i was driving home all i thought a bout was my sister. I ran a red light and the police pulled me over. I was horrid,I almost caused a accident. S he didnt give me a ticket she just told me to calm down. I DIDNT REALIZE HOW BAD THIS WAS UNTIL I GOT HOME TO LEARN THAT THOUSANDS PERISHED IN THIS ACT OF EVIL. I am an American. I kept repeating this in my head. I am free. I am happy. I am thankful to have so many strangers care about my freedom. I just want to thank all of you who are protecting us.
