On Goggle Earth you can see where they once stand there now is only cleared ground the new buildings weren't yet there. I really think most American's were very affected by this. For a long time I would see flags placed all over the place on buildings, on cars on homes. One year they asked everyone to be outside with a lighted candle at a certain time on 9/11. At this time I was at camp parks, my husband was doing his army weekend. I know all of us is aware something like this could happened to us again. And only pray that our government is more ready to step in this time to avoid anything like this from ever happening again. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I would like to tell three brief stories of my experinces on and shortly after 9/11/2001. On that morning I woke up and turned on the news like I allways do and saw one of the WTC towers on fire and heard something about a small plane had hit . Then there was a split screen with the Pentagon on fire and I understood that there had been an explosion. That`s when I thought 'we`re under attack' . So I called my brother and told him what I thought to which he responed 'Sounds serious' as he was waking himself and trying to process what I was telling him. I noticed I was shaking and hung up and got ready for work. Then there was the second plane hitting the WTC and the waiting for the next plane to hit Washington D.C. At that time my mind was on 'Alert' as my Army training started to come back to me. Even though I was discharged in 1983. My drive to work was strange as I think I was in shock and I had a near miss with a large truck. I felt 'disconnected' and had to force myself to focus. Well I made it to work and suffice it to say that I`m changed now an still find myself on " Alert" a year later. Secondly, A couple of days later there were no airplanes flying and I was making a delivery in the company van. As I was unloading I heard and felt a terrific noise from the sky above Portland and I instictivly ducked and my heart pounded ! When I looked up I saw two F-15`s that had just taken off from the Portland Air National Guard Base next to PDX. One of them was doing what apeared to me to be left and right rolling maneuvers with after burners blazing while the other was flying in a straight line. People around me were yelling " Go get 'em " and the like while others saluted as I did. They headed south and we all looked at each other and carried on with our business . Feeling Proud. Lastly, I went to my other brothers home to put up a new flag and noticed a toy Tank on the front steps with the barrel pointed at the sky. Later I learned that little Mikey , who was 6, had put it there to protect his home and his family. I write this on 9/11/2002 as I watch coverage of the memorials on TV. And it feels good to be able to share my expierience with people now and those who will read this in the future. I pray PEACE and COMFORT for you all. Michael T. My fellow employees and I were gathered around the T.V. watching history before our eyes. Our customers (roofing contractors) were coming in and stopping tiere buisy day to watch with us. I couldn't help thinking this was just the beginning of somthing big that was about to happen to our glorious country. I wanted to call my parents to tell them how important they were to me. My four small children were at school and I wasn't sure if it would be safe to leave them there. I had all of these thoughts racing through my head. I remember looking at the sky alot. It was so blue and clear. There were no planes. I thought of how pieceful it seemed here in Indidana and how chaotic it must be at that some moment in Ney York. The rest of the day wnet on. I had to try and continue my daily work. I made it through the day at work only to go home and try to explain to my children what had happened. They were to young to understand how big the things that happend were. I explaind that there were alot of lives lost. Hondres of thousands of people who were at work. They couldn't comprehend the totel loss our country had suffered. I took pennies and laid them out on the table, just to give them an idea of what that number looked like. they were in amazment. Just last night (9/11/02) my daughter who is only eight said " mommy i can't sleep becasue i keep thinking about the kids who lost their mommies and daddies." I was speachless. I tried to comfort her, telling her that God would take care of everything. That event has changed my life. Everything means alot more to me now. I know how quickly somthing can be taken away. My mom always said everything has a reason. God has a plan for all of us. I try to believe, and let him (God) handle what I have trouble handling. God bless our country!! When we returned to our Data Center everyone had a shocked and terrified look on his or her faces. Just as I asked, what happen? The second, plane hit all I could scream was Oh! My God. Then you start to pray for the people that are in the building. Their families and friends cross your mind. You thank God that you?re safe. Then the plane hits the Pentagon. Panic kicks in this is to close to home. Phones start to ring, you start dialing. My husband works for the Pentagon Federal Credit Union in Alexandria, VA. I just wanted to hear his voice and know that he?s ok the line is busy. My heart Stopped beating for several minutes. Once I talk to my husband I can hear the panic in his voice just terror. I just wanted to get to my children; I start to think if I am in panic I can only imagine the fear that our children are experiencing. September 11, 2001 changed my life in positive and negative ways. I appreciate life more I don?t take my family or my husband for granted but it is very hard to trust people. Tell us your story: It was a day that will live on forever I was at school and I saw my teachers baffle about something and she turned on the news my stomach dropped so low.It was like a movie but only real the first thing I did was call my dad because he is in the military he is sometime known to show up at the pentagon after I got a hold of him I called my mom she told us her friend was on her way to pick us up so we got out of school I live about 13 miles from the pentagon and I saw the smoke it was like a warzone ambulance flying bye it made me sick. We got to the gate I live on an army base called Fort Belvoir it took us 2 hours to get on they searched evey car they had guns it made me feel secure. I just want to thank every hero even my brother for being there in the time of need. Tell us your story: It was around 9a.m. when one of the tool and die makers started telling everyone that the World Trade Center had been blown-up. I thought he was just pulling our leg, but when I listened to the radio I felt a chill just run right through me. That evening I called my dad and brother to see how they were fairing, especially my brother who works in Dallas, Texas. It seemed as though they were targeting big cities. I think I cried off and on for a couple of weeks and prayed for all those innocent victims. Even though I new no one there, I still felt as though I had lost someone very dear to me. As I went outside to get in the car to go to school, I noticed that the sky was clear, and that planes had left their criss-crossing smoke streams all across the sky. Two fellow students and I were creating anatomy charts in Mrs. Keller's Medical Science class. My teacher decided we could watch TV as we colored the charts, and I was designated as the one to find something educational on TV. As I scrolled through the channels, I noticed that a building was on fire, and I accidentally skipped it, but came back to it. As I turned it on CNN, I saw the building with smoke arising from it. They mentioned that an aircraft had crashed into the first tower. About 10 minutes later, as we were watching, we saw the second plane hit the second tower, and we were in shock. We stayed quiet for at least 10 minutes before any of us could mutter out a single word. A teacher was running down the hall, saying that we were under attack, and that we should watch the news. About 30 minutes or so later, I remember hearing the report that there was an explosion at the Pentagon, and possibly an explosion from a car bomb at the State Department, which turned out to be a hoax. Throughout that day, on September 11th, we watched the coverage on TV, and I was personally shocked for about 2 weeks afterwards. As I left school that day, the smoke trails were gone from the sky, as all of the planes had been grounded. Before September 11th, I believed no one could hurt the United States of America. Today, I am graduated from that high school, and that will always be the most memorable day of my high school career, and of my life. My son was crying and very upset so I spent a little more time with him at the school. I got into my car a little after 9 and turned on the radio. The disc jockeys from the local radio station were making a crack about how could a plane crash into the World Trade Center. I thought it was a joke. But the more I drove home his voice and the comments he was saying became more bizarre. He then said another plane had just crashed into the other tower and I thought what a jerk he was to be saying this....But he kept saying it over and over....I changed the station and all the other stations were broadcasting the same thing. I just sat there and could not move...after about 5 minutes I grabbed my 9 month old out of her car seat in the back and ran inside and turned on the TV...and watched and watched and watched. I could not believe it!!! Before I had my youngest child I was a videotape editor CNBC and NBC News. I had been exposed to a lot but this was unbelievable My husband who is a news cameraman was on his way to work on the George Washington Bridge when it happened. They closed the bridge immediatly after the first plane hit and he was stuck on the bridge. He spent over an hour helping the police redirect traffic off the bridge. He called from his cell phone to me and his family to tell them he was ok. If he had been in the city an hour earlier he would sure been there when they went down. He could not get into the city they were even dedying the press access to get into the city. So he came home and we just watched TV all day...Then the F15s kept flying over our house over and over again..... Being part of the 80's generation, we have not experienced very many "earth shattering" events that we will remember like we will remember September 11th. I am a runner and I had gone out for my morning run, noticing how unremarkably beautiful it was that day! It was a perfect day and it put me in such a good mood. I came back to my room and was doing my sit-ups while watching the today show. Unexpectantly, the whole mood changed on the show as they announced some "breaking news". When the put the picture of the fire from the first plane hit, the broadcasters, along with all of us at the audience were at a loss for words. I remembered being amazed that they were handling it somewhat okay, being in the same city and able to look out the window at what was happening. It was early, and being on a college campus, I seriously felt as if I was in the twilight zone and i couldn't beleive that it was happening, but I couldn't make sense of it, because I was all alone. I was scared, shocked and most of all confused. Just like all Americans, my first response was just being glued to the TV as it all unfolded and right before my eyes, I saw the second plane hit as they were doing an interview with a girl on the street right outside of the trade centers. > I had to leave then, I had to go talk to someone about it or at least make sure it wasnt a dream that I was having, cause I hadn't interacted with anyone yet that day. As soon as I went outside though,it was quite obvious and all of a sudden I was flashed into my leadership role as an RA (resident advisor) as hundreds of freshman came to me screaming that their parents worked in the Pentagon. It was absolute pandomonium and I was just in disbelief that I was living through this. It's weird to think back on it now and everything we've learned, how we have all changed and what we have done since then to build our country. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On the morning of September eleventh, I was an 8th grader at Marlborough High School. I remember exactly where I was, in French class. When they announced it over the loudspeaker at my school, I really didn't understand what was happening, all I really had was the crazy things my classmates were saying. I remember being worried that we were going to be attacked and that I wouldn't get to see my best friend ever again, because she wasnt in the same class as me that period. Now as I reflect back a year later, I look at how much closer our country has grown. Sometimes, something good can even come from a great tradgedy like this. And when people ask where God was during this tradgedy, I think God did all he could to prevent people from dying. God saved 28,00 people in about 52 minutes. So don't look at it that 2800 people lost their lives, look at it that 28,000 people were able to survive. And the 2800 or so people who lost their lives..are now that much closer to God. I didn't lose anyone to the September 11th attack, but that doesnt mean it didn't personally affect me. I no longer take things for granted. I say goodbye and give a kiss to my mother every morning, because who knows what could happen that day, and whether that could be the last time I see her. Our country is forever united as one, and no terroist attack can ever bring us down. We were all puzzled until we saw the horrible image of an airplane crashing into the world trade center. We were all stuned as if this was some kind of dream. No one said a word every one was procesing the words that where coming from the televishion, reporters just repeating over and over that a plan just crashed into the world trade center. The pictures of smoke, fire, dibbry, and people were flowing like a river. I was afraid, shoked, confused, and amazed. At first I didnt understand the impact of what had just happend, then to make it worst another plane flies into the other wowrld trade center building. My thoughts where all jumbled together. I began to cry people in class where beging to cry too. My teacher tried to help but thier wasnt much that he could do.The phone began to ring nonstop, people where being called down to go home, right about that time the news reported that the buildings where falling down, and that 2 other panes had crashed. One into the pentagon and the other in Pennsylvania. I felt like this was one of those murder, fast past action movies. That it was all just a dream. After the song was over the dj came on and said that the World Trade Center had been hit. The dj on that radio staion is usually a big joker so i didnt think anything of it. I hopped in the shower and got ready for school. When i was ready i sat down and turned on espn to find out what was going on in sports like I usually do in the morning and when i turned the t.v on I saw the second plane hit the other building. i realized what was going on and watched the news till i had to go to school. At school everyone was in shock and people went home early and teachers didnt teach we just watched the news in almost all my classes. Tell us your story: I was at work and I work for the government.We have a couple locations and my location is off of the army base.Well we were working and someone came up to me and said a plane hit the World Trade Center well of course I thought well it was an accident.My coworkers daughter was working in the second building that was hit training someone to replace her or something like that.Well they had started evacuating the building and were told to return to their offices and she was on her way back up and got off the elevator at the 64th floor and started back down the steps.Well she did come out and made.My coworker did not find out until 7pm or so that her daughter was fine other than her legging hurting I think and of course her emotional state.Well my coworkers son-in-law didn't hear from her until 4pm and told her husband to pick her up in New Jersey where she had taken the ferry ride after evacuating NYC.Well my coworker of course that sad day went home and then the rest of us went home about 10:30 am.I will always remember that day because on the radio that morning they had said that it was 911 day in which we honor those who serve our community using this services.I believe that this day at first was meant to honor our policemen/policewomen,firemen,emt and whatever else we may use this service for.Now I know that this is truely their day and we should do anything we can to remember those that died,injured or had a relative that was effected.Please know that the people that day didn't die invane they died doing what they do on a daily basis and think nothing of it.My heart goes out to everyone and especially those children that were born in this world not knowing their father and how much he cared for his family. It was at the time when the first plane hit. I turned on the tv to see if my brother was telling the truth. Sure enough he was. I had turned it on and watched for a little bit thinking it was over. Unfortunatly I thought wrong. The next thing you know is that the Pentagon is being hit, a second plane crashes into the second tower,a plane goes down in Pennsylvania, and then the horror. I had fell into my chair when it happend;the two twin towers fell down crushing everyone and everything in it. The tears were rolling down my face at this time. I couldnt even think of anything except who did this and how will they be punished. I also thought about the thousands of people who were probably dead. To think another human could do such a horrible thing, it broke my heart exspecially since they did it with our own planes. I called everyone I knew to tell them that I love them dearly. It was history what happend. When President Bush came to Nebraska heading for Offut Air Force Base, we Nebraskins were afraid. We didnt know if they would come here and do something awful just like what happend in NY. I've never got the chance to say this but to all of the victims and the victims families I'm so sorry for your loses, I know that they all are in heaven watching upon you and wishing you the best down here. To Bin Laden you can run from us but you cant run from God, I dont care what you say no God would what you to murder thousands of people. There will be judgement day for you. That morning, I was sitting in History class, just trying to listen to the teacher when suddenly; another teacher came in the room to tell everyone what had happened. We just heard that there was a plane crash so my teacher was hesitant to stop class and turn on the television. The buzz was heading around school but no one could imagine what was really going on. My teacher turned on the television after she had finished her lecture and we all watched one of the Twin Towers pour out insane amounts of smoke. We had no idea that it was not an accident. The only thing we could do was watch and hope that everything would be alright. Then the unimaginable happened, a second plane hit. We were all in shock, not knowing what to think. I, being so na?ve, thought that it was just a bad day for flying. We watched diligently as the first tower collapsed. Shortly after, the second one fell too. What a horrific sight. The word that so many people were throwing out was one I didn?t recognize. Terrorist? What was that? And why were so many people scared of it? I got out of class a hurriedly went to my next class not understanding what was really happening. Word had gotten around quickly, and as I got to my next class, I was told that another plane had hit the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. I was a nervous wreck because my step dad was at work in Arlington which was close by and I was scared for him. I hoped that he was fine but still had no clue as to why all of this was happening. We were let out of class early and I noticed my best friend out in the locker commons. She was balling her eyes out so I quickly ran over to her to see what was going on. She told me, between sobs, that her dad had been working at the Pentagon for the day and she and her mother had tried calling him but they both could not reach him. Thank goodness later when she got home, her dad had called her mom back and he was absolutely fine. At the time, I had no idea what was going on, I just knew that things were absolutely not right. The rest of the day went by pretty slowly as I continued to think about what had gone on in the morning. The teachers kept talking about this tragedy and I felt a little guilty because I was not affected because I had no idea what had gone on and why. So many people were crying and I just seemed to have forgotten about it by the time school was over. I met my sister, Mary at the car after school. When Mary approached the car, I noticed she had tears in her eyes. When we both got into the car she said ?God, this is so terrible.? I simply asked her, ?Why?? She looked at me like I was some inhumane being, but I just didn?t understand. She would not talk to me for the rest of the day. When I got home, my mom was there and she reassured me that my step dad was fine and that he was on his way home. We watched the coverage because it was the only thing on, every channel. Her world was chaotic with the destruction of a villain until her hero arrived on the scene to rescue her. Bat-man . . . it had been so long since I had been a part of that fantasy world my daughter was rapped up in that day. It was a world where there was always a villain that could be seen, and the heroes were super-sonic. One or two would always save the day and smiles would spread across the faces of all victims. They would all cheer and the heroes and heroines would go off to prevent another catastrophe. As I sat and replayed the events of September 11, 2001 in my mind, I became painfully aware of the difference in the two separate worlds my daughter and I live in. Yet, the more I thought about it, the more similarities I've found in the two. Although it seemed at the time that the villains on that dreadful day were faceless and invisible, within a very short time we knew every attacker on board those planes. There has not been a more chaotic day in America since I can remember than the day all work stopped and total strangers joined hands and prayed for our nation as we watched the events unfurl in front of us on local, national and international television stations. Almost like a cartoon extravaganza where all the Super-Heroes worked together to fight the evil forces that had attacked Gotham City, we watched as literally hundreds of men and women in every walk of life, became our nation's Super-Heroes as they ran into burning buildings, doctored and cared for total strangers, and wept as they tried to find people they did not know by a single snap shot. Police officers who took family and friends from place to place to try to identify loved ones who had passed away in the attack, and held them while they wept as yet again they found no clues. My hat goes off to them. The firemen who worked tirelessly to find a trace of life in the rubble. My heart is filled with pride to have such men and women as a part of our nation. The three men who saw the necessity of a flag being flown at the site as if to say. . ."we may be down, but we're not out. And we will be up again!" The ordinary folks who did what they could . . . things like making coffee for the men, bringing meals, donuts or juice to help keep them going. The ones who couldn't do much so they stood by and shouted encouraging words, and those who whispered prayers for the safety of those working at ground zero. Then there are the volunteers who flew, rode trains, buses and drove to New York to give those exhausted workers a break (whether they actually left ground zero or not). Although this is by far the end, I would like to mention one more group of people I consider my heroes. They couldn't go, they may not have had money, clothes or food to send, but I don't know how many thousands of candles, lights, flags, flowers, banners, bumper stickers & etc. I've seen since that day. I know I will never, ever be able to meet all my real-life heroes, but I hold you in my heart. I honor you. America. . .you are my hero. When the very essence of what we stand for and live by was attacked, it sent us to our knees but instead of crumbling there, we prayed for strength and got back up to show the world that we are still Proud to Be Americans. For now I'll let Candace go on in her fantasy world with Bat-Man & Robin, Spider Man and Wonder Woman, but I can hardly wait for the day I can tell my little girl about the day every real-life hero in America stood together to fight a real-life evil force and we won! Tell us your story: It was my second day on the job as the new Training Specialist, and I was sitting with a upper-level manager being briefed on what their division did. The phone rang. He excused himself and answered it. It was his wife, who was telling him about the first plane hitting the WTC. He told me after he got off the phone, and I thought, "What a terrible accident." That was until the second call came from his wife a few minutes later. Then we both realized that this was no accident. We continued on with our meeting as best we could, not realizing the significance of what had just happened. As soon as I was done, I went back to my office where TVs were on, and everyone was standing around looking at the images of the burning towers. It was unbelieveable. When the towers collapsed, the whole day became surreal. I felt a sense of sadness and of rage. I also knew that this was the start of war. I thought, "When they figure out who did this, it will be bad for them." My wife called, saying "They're using our own planes against us!" She urged me to come home right then, and I now wished I had, but it was my second day on at a new job, and since no one else was leaving, I was afraid to leave. The rest of the day was basically useless. I went out in the field to observe an appraiser work on appraising property, and this appraiser was a HAM operator, having a portable unit in his car. Around 4pm in the afternoon, someone came on the radio, and was chatting happily about his day outdoors until someone else must of clued him in as to what was happening. He asked, "What's going on?" The appraiser and I both said it about the same time---"Boy is he in for a shock." I remember riding around with that appraiser for a couple of hours more, and unbelievably, I saw, freshly spraypainted on a wall near a freeway entrance ramp, "Die you American pigs." I couldn't believe it. The enemy was among us. Like any patriotic American, I would have liked to meet up with that person right then. I work only a few miles from Love Field, and I drive directly under DFW airport's southern flight paths (Hwy 183). I will never forget how empty the sky looked. We are used to having quite a few commercial airliners flying around. The sky was clear, and I could only imagine that this was what the sky looked like before man had created airplanes. As I was standing outside at the end of the day, talking to some fellow employees, I heard jet engines. I knew nothing was supposed to be flying, so I spun around to see 2 F16s zipping across the sky over downtown Dallas. At the end of that week, while planes were still grounded and the skies were clear, I saw a small private propeller plan pass overhead heading southwest near my house in Fort Worth. I thought that was odd, since there should be no planes in the air. Before I finished that thought, 2 F16 screamed over the trees in pursuit of that plane, and of course caught up with it in seconds. 911 was a major shock to me, and I worry that Americans will forget how significant an event that was in our history, allowing ourselves to be lulled back into a complacency that could allow another event like 911 to happen. I had woken up, gotten ready for school, got in my moms car and we wre not even a block away, when suddenly on my favorite radio station hte horrible announcement came on. I was trembling with fear, as i remembered that my Grandparents had just left for a vacation in New York. I still went to school that day, but we wrent required to do any work. Tell us your story: I remember September 11, 2001- I was going into Mrs. Hines third period class, and Mr. McCann (our principle) came over the intercom and informed the school of the recent terrorist attacks. Being somewhat sheltered, I didn't know what "the pentagon" was, or what city "the twin towers" were in. What I remember most about the day was being really scared of what would happen next. I had never even imagined that anyone would attack the United States of America. My best friend at the time had a brother in the military, and we both panicked that he would have to go to war. Overall, it was an eye opening experience for me. Leading the sheltered life that I had, I wasn't aware of all the outside world, and what kinds of relationships we had with them. My life had definitely changed since the incident. I have been exposed to so much- I began to watch the news, and stay posted on current events. I believe I became closer to God, and I told the people that were most important to me how much I loved them (family and friends) just in case I were to never see them again. I think filled me with more patriotism, and I was very proud to be an American. I also became very interested in raising money for the American Red Cross, and I co- started a fundraiser at my school. I believe that the innocent people as well as the should be remembered, but most of all, I believe that the firemen the rescue squads should be remembered as well. So many of them lost their lives in an effort to save fellow Americans. Their job is very dangerous, and it took much courage to enter those towers and fight to find dying people. But don't get me wrong, the innocent people of September 11, 2001 should all be kept in our hearts forever. I have much more respect for the flag than I ever did before. I think it symbolizes so much more to Americans then it did before the attacks. It shows that as a nation, we were able to overcome attacks from foreign lands, and that instead of destroying us, it brought each one of us closer together. It shows that our country is not easily torn down, that we are strong and only become stronger through the pain. Flying the flag should fill an American with pride, for we do live in a great country!
