I was still sleeping when the planes hit so I had no idea what happened so I was just doing what I usually do. When I got to school I found out what happened. I thought what had happened was horrible. In all of my classes we had discussions about it. At home on the television I saw the two planes crash in to the World Trade Center. It was a terrible sight. Those people at the World Trade Center were innocent and didn't deserve to die. My relative's relative's relative was at the World Trade Center when it happened. I agree with President Bush's decision to go on war on the terroists. The terroists should never have done what they did to the World Trade Center and the Pentagon. They shouldn't get away with a crime like what they did to all the people and their families. I hope that the families of the dead will still live as happy as they did before. My son Joseph got up and said "what is this going on in N.Y.?" "I said oh must be an anniversery of that time they tried to bomb the world trade center." As I watched further I shouted to my son in the other room "oh my god this is happening now." I know at this point you might be saying that my story doesn't seem so significant but I must back up to the beginning of 2001 for you to realize the impact that 9-11 had and has each year on me and my family. My Grandmother died on 3,11, 2001. (My Mother's Mother) My Mother died on 6,22, 2001 ________________ Many americans died on 9,11 2001 I could not believe my eyes when I looked at these numbers. Tell us your story: I had just arrived at work and was sitting down at my desk with my morning java when my husband called me and said 'Hon, some jerk just flew a plane into one of the towers at the World Trade Center.' My response was that it had to be an accident that noone was evil enough to do something like that. But, to my shock when my husband called and told me that the second tower had been hit and then the pentagon I knew that it was the work of Satan and that he was running loose in America. This has really effected my family in a personal way as my son re-enlised into the Army and is currently serving his 2nd tour in Iraq. I detected a sense of panick in the tone of her voice. I ask what was wrong and she told me that 1 "World Trade Center" was hit by one of our planes they were calling it an accident.At that time I was working on 40th & Park on the 34th Floor. I ran to the window that faced the Twin Tower's and couldn't believe my eye's there was this huge hole, it was dark and there was smoke, very black smoke. I ran back to my desk and tryed to get intouch with my sister who worked closer to the "World Trade Center". The lines were down I couldn't reach her. I was able to reach my mother. She was glued to the T.V. she informed me that the second tower was also hit. I couldn't see the second tower from the window at my job. But I did witness when the tower fell. There was this white smoke exiting the sides of the building. That was all I could see from that view, was the white smoke. I finally was able to reach my sister. She was screaming telling me that the first tower fell. I noticed how upset she was so I helped calm her down and intructed that she walk to my job as soon as possible. I also had to reach my sister in-law who worked down on 33rd & park. I went to her job and picked her up. Not to change the subject but this is the second most devastating tragedy that I ever expirenced. In 1992 my brother was killed in "Desert Storm". My sympathies and prayers go out to all the victim's and families in this traget time. Life go's on it will get easier to deal with. You will never forget that special person that was so loved by you. Mother's, Brother's, Sister's, Father's, Husband's, Wives, Aunt's, Cousin's, Fiance, and Best Friend's. Suddenly, the phone rang. It was my teacher?s mom calling to tell her to turn on the T.V. because a plane had just hit one of the twin towers. To be honest, no one payed that much attention to the T.V. until the second twin tower was hit. We saw it live. Some kids cried and others, including myself, went silent. The news reporters were crying out "this is an act of war". It was the first time that I had seen broadcasters panic. Everyone in the class stood still and silent. Are eyes were glued to the television; no one spoke. When class ended, it was eerie to walk down the hallways because for the first time it was completely silent; everyone was stunned. A broadcast came over the radio and said that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. I thought to myself, "Wow, major malfunction." I then made it to work. Entered and asked my friend if she had heard and she had not. I then turned on my radio which has t.v. stations. We were listening to Brian Gumble speaking with a woman working close to the towers. She said, "Oh My God, another plane has just hit the other tower." My friend and I looked at one another and knew it was no accident. Then reports of the Pentagan and Pennsylvania. We were then, at that point, very scared. Like many, I remember exactly what I was doing that day, what I was wearing, the way I wore my hair, the way the sky looked, everything. I will always remember. We work very close to Baltimore/Washington International Airport. The silence of no planes coming in or going out was deafening. We were able to leave work early that day. On my way home I made phone calls to my mom and dad and began to cry trying to understand why anyone would do something like this. I picked up my children and hugged them tight and cried even more. Being only 3 1/2 and the other 11 months, they did not understand what was going on. And for that I am glad. Where do you begin to explain to a child what happened and have them understand why. I looked at my daughter and son last night as they slept, the eve of September 11th, 2002 and wished that their generation will never, ever have to experience anything like this. I never in my wildest dreams ever thought I would in my lifetime. If one good thing emerged from all of this it is that the United States came together as one. The way it should be. Everyone looked at everyone the same. It did not matter if you were short/tall, rich/poor, black/white, etc. Everyone renewed their patriotism that day and it still shines. Let it never be extinguished. Our freedom and patriotism should burn brightly forever as a nation that will always, from that day, be different. Tell us your story: It was just about 8:50 A.M. when my daughter and I pulled into the drive thru at a donut shop - something we did religiously every morning before school. While waiting to pull forward, I turned on the radio and that's when I heard the DJ reporting about a plane that had struck one of the towers in New York City. It did not register at first the magnitude of the incident until she said that it appeared to be atleast a 737, maybe even a 757. Immediately, I turned the station to see if this was just a random report or if it indeed carried some weight. I was stunned to hear that just about any station I could tune into was broadcasting on the same information. It was about this time that I returned to the original station and it was then that the DJ cried out , "My GOD! Another plane has just stuck the second tower!" My daughter looked at me with question and concern and asked,"Daddy, did those people die?" - she was only 6 at the time. I soon realized that evryones world had changed forever in some form or fashion. My wife called me on the cell phone in tears presumeably in shock of what just occurred. I supppose that being prior military memebers ourselves, we seemed to take it a little harder than others around us. I find myself scanning images in my head of news footage, interviews and photos of the worst possible shots and sometimes wonder what I would have done, - what could I have done? It saddens me the worst to think of those that were clinging to the outsides of the building as it was engulfed in horendous flames. I only find comfort in the explanation that I have created myself for those who chose to leap hand in hand. It is this - I believe that as they peered over the ledges, what they saw was not hundreds of feet of distance and smoke, but a softness of light accompanied by angels and the hands of God. Of all the individuals that were photographed falling or leaping, the body motions appeared to be calm and relaxed. As hard as it is to think of this as I write, I find comfort and ease with this vision. These days, I find myself in silence a little more than before, perhaps alot more reflectful of things past and things that matter most in life. I was sitting watching the late news and just about to switch the television off when a some breaking news came through. All it said was that a plane had flown into the World trade Centre in New York. All I thought at that time was what a terrible mistake the pilot had made and never in my wildest dreams did I ever believe it would be on purpose. The news switched over to USA today to watch it live. I couldn't believe what i was seeing really. But then out of the corner of the screen i watched in disbelief as another plane flew into the other tower. I will NEVER forget that night. I laid in my bed watching in shock. I called my sister and mother and told them to turn on the news. I sat on the phone with my sister watching and not understanding what was happening. All I could think of was the people stuck above the impact points were doomed. i sat and watched live as people felt they had no other choice but to jump. What kind of choice was that? Then more news, planes into Pentagon, plane crashed in Pensylvania. What was happening, what was going to happen? All I could think about was the people on the flights, what were their thoughts? As I sat and watched people jump to their deaths I cried, as I heard about the plane in Washington i cried, as i heard about the flight that crashed in Pensylvania, I cried. I knew from that point on life as I and we knew it was over. We would no longer live in a peaceful world, there would have to be pay back for what has happened. I have never cried as much as I did that night, for the dead, injured, friends, family and the whole world. I sat up all night and watched the news, the world was now in shock. I went to work the next day as did the rest of Melbourne. All car head lights were on out of respect, people sat in their cars and cried openly. Flags were at half mast, no one smiled, we all just cried and shook our heads. Melbourne could not believe what had happened. How to do you try and comprehend what has happened? I don't think you can. Now, September 14, 3 years on, my heart still breaks everytime I see the vision. I will never forget 9/11 and I hope no one else does. All I can hope is that the younger generation of Australia and the world learn from the mistakes made by our leaders, before and after September 11. I hope they can do a better job that what has been done. I hope this NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. WE WATCHED IN TOTAL DISBELIEF-UNATTACHED FROM OURSELVES AS IF WE WERE IN A DAZE. TEARS ROLLED DOWN MANY OF OUR FACES,AS WE REALIZED WHAT WAS HAPPENING. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I?ve been to the pinnacle. I?ve looked down a thousand feet, a straight plunge of certain death. I used to live there, not in the dead zone but in the city itself, in a small apartment with too many people. It wasn?t quite a dead zone then, nor was the city a united one. Indeed, back then the nation was petty and its motives transient. When was that? I was a child, I had poor recollection of the times except for brief moments of clarity that etch themselves into your mind. I was five, I believe, and still suffering the aftereffects two years previous of the loss of one of my five senses, not quite compensating yet with increase in the rest of them. I?ve got other senses now, but that?s a different story for some other discussion. We lived in Queens, the four of us. At least that?s what my fogged memory leads me to believe, the four of us. My grandmother, who was and continued to be a city councilwoman in that borough until her retirement a couple years ago, owned the apartment and graciously let us stay there in spite of the fact that there was not really any place for two young children and their mother to stay. We were there for a year, with the vague intention of curing my hearing loss via alternative medicine, which involved sticking large needles into hundreds of points in my body, day after day. I should have cried but I don?t think I did. What does this have to do with the subject at hand? I don?t know. It?s background. I lived in New York City and I visited the World Trade Center. These are my thoughts as I try to remember what it felt like. My father visited us several times while we lived there. My parents were still ?together,? just not living together because of various reasons. I didn?t really think too hard about that, since I?ve never really thought too hard about anything if I can help it. One time, he took us to see the towers. If you?ve never been there before, imagine the physical manifestation of the word ?looming.? That?s what it was like standing before them and looking up. I didn?t know anything about them other than that they seemed to be immense and timeless, some construct that was quite old and would stand for long after I was dead. I knew back then I?d be dead eventually. We went and stood in line in front of one of those industrial-size elevators they have for tourists to ride to the top in. It took awhile, but not terribly long, to get in, and I felt fairly safe being surrounded by all the large people around us. I didn?t notice the change in the floor number, only that I was being pulled towards the floor with a surprising force. It took around a minute to get to the end of the ride. The doors slid open and we suddenly found ourselves looking out. The windows were everywhere, exposing the skyline from a hundred stories up. I inched to the edge and looked down. People like the dots of an I, cars puttering along no larger than ants, and overall a sense of being far too high overwhelmed me. ?What if I should fall?? That?s what I thought. What if the tower crumbles? Will the foundation hold? Will I die looking down on the world today? I guess I didn?t. I entertained nightmares for a few months after that, of standing in the top floor of a great skyscraper and having it fall down, with me inside. But then, what does this have to do with the subject at hand? I don?t know. When I think about what?s gone by, contemplating the image of a 747, which under some strange happenstance I might have been a passenger in, colliding violently, imbedding itself in a building I?ve stood in at a level where I?d be certainly dead from the fall, or from the smoke, I just think back. I remember the skyline, I remember the view. I remember the way it was because I?ve been there. I won?t dwell any more on the moment of impact, for millions of people the words have been said with enough depth of meaning and quavering of voice to eclipse whatever I might type. How blue the sky was and the weather was just wonderful. It was strange I had no idea that New York was in trouble. The morning made me think of an odd saying and it still huants me in hindsight. "It's a buetifull day to die" I have heard someplace that Indian warriors would say this going into battle. That perfect morning driveing home I thought of that. Possible because my father had just passed away. I'm not sure. I got to the house where I lived with my mother since my fathers death. I had just crawled into bed. The phone rang it was my girlfriend calling from galveston long distance! All she could say was any channel turn on the T.V. any channel. I had never heard her sound like this. I turned on the T.V. My mother and I watched stunned. My mother remembered pearl harbour and said that for many nights they did not sleep after that news and that I would not sleep after this. She was correct. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Preparing for work on the morning of September 11, 2001, I received a call from my husband asking if I had the news on. I did not have the TV on at the time but did so when he told me that the World Trade Center in NYC was on fire as a result of a plane crashing into it. I was in disbelief even as I turned the news on to witness this horrific event with my own eyes. By the time I arrived at the sitters to drop my children off, the second building had been hit, the Pentagon had been hit and the 1st tower had collapsed. I arrived at work a short time later and my co-workers and I were numb with fear and uncertainty. We new these events were no coincidence. All planes were grounded, but there was a flight missing. We soon found out that it went down in Pennsylvania. How could someone do something so horrible and were we in danger, far away as we were in the west? What unspeakable tragedy I watched as I lunched with my husband. We wondered then, and wonder still what intense hatred lived in the hearts on men and why. The subsequent events, recovery and personal accounts only solidified our own faith in God and the belief that our country is blessed. Tell us your story: I am a substitute teacher and that perticuliar day I was in for the high school gym teacher and happen to be outside with the girls practicing soccer. The technology teacher came out the back door and motioned me over to the side and began to tell me that a plane had hit the first tower and to alert the high school girls class that I had, in a calm way, what was going on. I did so and within minutes he came out again and explained the horrific events that were taking place, the only thing I could say to him was: "oh God, are we at war". I have three children and my then seven year old asked the next day if New York was "still there", I told him not to worry that it was and always WILL BE. When I first heard a plane hit the towers, I thought it was a smaller single engine plane, I didnt even think of a passenger plane. Then another plane hit the south tower, and I realized what was going on. It seemed never ending, planes where going down, it hit closer to home when the plane crashed in PA, a couple hours from where I go to school. All day I think everyone at the campus was in shock of what had just taken place. I could not call anyone to see if they were okay, it was a real problem. Honestly it had been a long time since I had cried, but I just could help feeling sorry for the families of the victimes, I couldn't help but cry. It was a mixture of many emotions, anger, sadness, alone, which I'm sure all Americans felt. It was truly a sad day in history, but if anything good could have come it was the support of cities and communities who came together to help heal. I pray to God nothing like this ever happens again in my life or the lives of my unborn children. I lost a special friend. Jeff was a kind , brillant man. He had several college degrees but the one that meant the most was from Wheaton College (Ministry). He was president of one company (E-Logic) and Vice-President of another (Cahners). His main goal in life was to be worthy of the Grace of God. Jeff taught Bible study and counciled young people. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am currently a Vice President for an Information Technology consulting firm in NYC. I was formerly a NYC Paramedic. On 9/11, after the second plane hit the South Tower, local radio stations were announcing, "...off duty fire, police, paramedics and nurses should respond downtown." As a Paramedic, I had been involved in the disaster drills at the WTC. I knew the protocols and procedures. I wanted to help. I needed to help. My wife called. She asked me if I was going downtown. I said I wasn't sure. But, we both knew the real answer. I left my office and headed for the subways. At Grand Central Station, the trains were held and stopped. Unknown to us at that time, the South Tower had collapsed. I told an NYPD officer that I was an off-duty Paramedic and had to get downtown. He brought me over to a Sergeant, who had an off-duty fireman with him. Officers from the NYPD Transit division drove us downtown. As we went past Union Square, we saw people walking slowly, almost in a daze. As we proceeded further down Broadway, people were more anxious, and running North. The officers turned right on Vesey Street and left us off at Vesey St. near Church Street. The fireman and I got out and we saw police and fireman at a North Tower entrance, waving to us to join them. The fireman and I started to run over, but then we started to be pelted by rocks and debris. The North Tower was starting to collapse. The fireman with me (I never did get his name), grabbed me by the collar, pulled me and yelled, "RUN!? I'm no athlete (not by any stretch...) but we ran back to Broadway. We started to run north on Broadway (near Fulton St.). We heard this roar and there was this dark gray cloud covering Broadway. It looked like a pyroclastic cloud from a volcano. I ducked in front of an ambulance that had been parked on Broadway. The cloud swallowed everything in its path. Everything went dark. It was hard to see and breathe. I heard glass breaking and car alarms going off. Afterwards, there was silence. Just like the morning after a snowstorm. Everything was monochromatic.... gray. People, cars, buildings, everything. I teamed up with other EMS staff and we headed back to "Ground Zero". The dust was thick around my feet and swirled in the air. The only color was occasional patches of red and pink. We started to treat people. The injuries ran the full range from "boo-boos" to severe head injuries. We passed the minor injuries to other people to be transported to local hospitals. We triaged the serious and critical injuries. I pronounced 16 people dead. I saw a foot sticking out of debris; I ran over and started to remove the debris, hoping for someone still alive. It was just a foot still in its shoe. It had been torn just above the ankle. I carried it with me, looking for someone to give it to... The air had the smell of burning flesh. Trust me, once you smell it, you never forget it. People around me commented, "what is THAT smell?" Two people vomited when I told them. We had heard that between 80-100 people had jumped to their death prior to the towers collapsing. Absolutely amazing... We were moved back up Broadway near Canal Street. There we treated more "walking wounded". Cell phones were out of service and some pay phones had long lines waiting to use them. I walked into a women's clothing store and asked to use the phone. The owner was very gracious and said I could. I called my office, told them I was fine and asked for them to call my wife and tell her I was OK. The remainder of the day, we were moved from one area to another, but there was no one left to treat. We had been moved to West Broadway, near Canal Street. Ambulances were lined up, as were Police and Fire. Sirens were in the air and the crowd parted to let a police car and a blue Jaguar enter. The Jaguar parked and out stepped a tall dark haired physician in a white lab coat. He walked over to our group, which consisted of EMT's and Fire officials. The doctor said he was a trauma surgeon and need to go down "there" to amputate a woman's leg that was trapped. He looked at me dressed as I was in a tie and dress slacks. He asked if I was a doctor. I said no, a Paramedic. He said, "Good, come with me". An ambulance drove us down as far as they could. We had to walk the last 3 blocks and firemen escorted us to the women. She was trapped by the Customs House on Vesey Street, which was now covered by the North Tower. 7 WTC was behind us and the front of the building had been ripped open and was on fire. The woman was trapped under an overhang of debris. The firemen looked nervous. They kept saying, "Make it fast guys, it's not safe here". No kidding. The debris was piled 40 or 50 feet high and ran from West St to Broadway. You heard the creaking of the steel and concrete debris. The woman was in her late 40's. She was covered with dust and dirt. Her left leg below the knee was buried under debris. I think she was Hispanic. She wasn't conscious, but would occasionally scream, cry and then pass out. I took vitals and started the IV. The doctor prepared for the amputation. The doctor injected a sedative into the IV line and started to amputate her leg. I heard a couple of "Oh Shits!" from the firemen behind us. Between the creaking of the debris and the heat from the 7 WTC fire, it was surreal, yet I was scared. Real scared. After the leg was amputated we bandaged the stump. The firemen carried her back to the ambulance and one fireman helped the doctor. I never knew her name, nor did I find out what became of her. I then got a lift to my final destination...Stuyvesant High School. It had become a command post. There was law enforcement officers from every city/state and federal agency...armed to the teeth. Rumors were running rampant. The White House had been hit, the Supreme Court was hit, and Air Force One was shot down in mid-air. No one knew for sure. We were all concerned, down right scared at times, but I saw a raw determination from these people (men and women), a brewing anger that was ready to explode. There was a poor School Safety Officer sitting at the reception desk at the school and a number of NYPD asked if juice drinks and food could be brought from the cafeteria to feed the people there. The School Safety Officer said he didn't have the key. Two big (real big) NYPD Emergency Service Police Officers, said, "don't worry about it". They came back 10 minutes later with loaves of bread, bologna, cans of juice and a large bolt cutter... By 4pm, the "cavalry" had arrived from across the tri-state area, yet again; there was no one to treat. I walked up West Broadway to Canal Street and I saw a van with NYPD officers in it. They were kind enough to give me a lift to 8th avenue and 14th street. I took the subway to Penn Station and grabbed the first train home. I was so covered in dust, dirt and blood, no one on the packed train wanted to sit near me. I walked into my house and my kids hugged me, my wife hugged me and then started to hit me on my chest. She cried. I cried. It took 3 showers before I felt clean again. Like the rest of the world, I then watched on TV what had occurred. On the one year anniversary , I still think about it. I see it when I close my eyes. I taste it in my mouth. I'll never forget that day. I was driving to work that morning and listening to the radio when I had heard a second plane had just hit the other tower. I was just seconds away from a view on the Nortern State parkway where the Ny skyline is visable if you are traveling west just before the LIE exit. I could not see the towers just smoke and reaized this was no small plane, The towers were burning and people were dieing and I was watching even at this big distance.As i drove to my work destination I was very concerned not Knowing what this was all about. Once arriving at my business and seeing the TV I was just stunned .When the first tower started to go down My first thought was for all the helpless firemen that stood at the buildings bottom to help I knew they would die.ive been to the top and Ive stood before them great buildings. I stood before them and thought im in danger if this ever started to come down,I would not be able to run that fast the buildings were huge. God bless them brave men to try and help that day they were only thinking of others and a way to help! God bless them they are what I would hope our God would see in all of us.
