Tell us your story: I was drving home from my morning classes that fateful September morning at 9am I was humming softly to myself , because it was a beautiful sunny day. I decided to turn on my car radio to hear some music when chaos greeted me. I couldn't understand what they were saying so I turned the cahnnel to another station. Oddly enough the same garbled report greeted me. I decided to listen for exactly what was happening when a reported named Peter Jennings said" It's confimed ladies and gentlemen god help us all a second palne has crahsed into the second tower..." I was confused trying to understand what he was talking about. " What!!!" I shouted in alarm. Then he came back on " America has been attacked by an apparent terrorist act. Two air liners have crahsed into the World Trade Center Towers and Tower 1 has collapsed... It's not known if the second Tower or surrounding buildings are in danger of collapsing.....{intense crashing sounds, screaming, roaring of explosions}... God halp us... This is a drak day in history... The second World Trade Tower has collapsed..."( Peter, J. 9/11/01). I sped home at breakneck speed crying and screaming " WHY GOD WHY!!!!" I screeched into the drive and ran to the door... I left my purse in the car... I left the keys there also... Forgotten as the peacful happy world I once knew was torn from me... I beat on the door and screamed when I was unable to place the key in the lock. I screamed , beat on the door and cryed for my mother to open the door... She was home sick in bed, when she sleepily came to the door and opened it..." What's wrong with you? Did you have an accident?" She saked growing alarmed at my hysterical behavior. " We have been attacked by terrorists and the World Trade Towers are gone... Turn on the tv now!" I cried in anguish... She was in shock standing there gaping at me... Not believeing me until I turned on CNN... There were the glaring images that are burned into every Amercan's memory... Plane one's impact on tower one, the second impact and the fire, the black column of smoke filling the nWe York Skyline and then finnaly , painfully slowly they fell... " On God no... "I kept saing over and over again as my mom cried with me for all of the people we knew were dead, dying , or hurt... I couldn't stop crying as anguish filled my heart. Then I realized my little girl was still in school... I frantically dialed the number to make sure she was safe... She was I asked if I could come and get her ,but they were on security lock down... They knew what had happened and to insure the children's safety they kept them inside... We then heard about the threat to the president and the other two planes still flying under terrorist power heading towards the Pentagon and the White house... I truly thought that we were in WWIII. They had destroyed a national symbol with our own planes and now they were after our Presdident! We prayed for our country, the victims in New York and the Pentagon. We didn't know about the herroism taking place in Pensylvania... I will never forget the horror of that day... I will never forget watching the report that evening as the Taliban bombed Kabul with ground missles... The reporter did not know excatly where they were originating from, but the images said it all... I was in a complete state of anxiety, I was crying and hyperventilating believening with all of my heart that this was the end of our world... I was afraid to go out, drive anywhere ,or attend college the next day... I did go ,but I was exhausted, depressed and teary... I ended up dropping the class, because I couldn't concentrate. A year of depression followed and we celebrated the anniversary at a memorial on the padestrian bridge at Rihele Plaza where a pice of the World Trade Center was placed for us to touch and lay flowers on. We all cried as we stepped up and placed a flower for all those who have perished... I cherish my family, my mother and my little girl... I value every single day God has blessed us with. I still get sad about what has happened to our country , but I have confidence that the President will insure our safety and our future. God Bless New York, God bless Washington DC, God bless all those who have died, and suffered at the hands of tyranny and evil that cruelly stole away their lives and dreams. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 10th - Night I went to bed with a kind of weird feeling in the back of my head. I couldn't quite figure out what it was, but I usually get this feeling before something big happends. I had an important test the next day, so I figured, hey, maybe this means I will do well on it. I fell asleep... September 11th - 7 AM (PST) I awoke to hear the sobs of my mother crying "We're in war, we're in war..." I had not come to my complete senses, and then I heard the TV on. "If you're just joining in with us, both towers of the World Trade Center, in New York City, have been struck by two large airplanes, according to witnesses." I thought "This is some sick Hollywood movie, this can't be the news." I turn on my TV to CNN, and I saw the chaos. I immediately looked into the corner of the screen, where the word "Live" was flashing. What is all of this? Dear God, the people in that building. I quickly dressed for school, and as I was putting on my t-shirt, the first of the buildings fell. I was in shock, I did not know what to make out of it. I got into the car, and turned on the radio to KNX 1070. My school is about 15 miles away, right by downtown LA. As we were approaching the Harbor FWY, the second tower fell. I immediately looked out into the LA Skyline, thinking "Will it happen here?" I glanced up into the sky, to see the approach pattern into LAX. There were no airplanes. I thought "This is odd, no airplanes flying into LAX today, the FAA must know something is going on." It had not even hit my head yet, that this was a terrorist attack. I arrived at school, and the administration was doing there best to keep everyone calm. I went to my lockers, and joined a conversation with people speaking about the events. A kid came up to us and said, "What's going on guys..." He had not heard of the news yet, which was surprising to us all. We told him, and he began to get worried. Apparently, his brother worked in Tower 2, of the World Trade Center. (We later found out, that his brother, who had recently graduated from the school, saved dozens of lives that day. He quickly helped people out of the building, and later, as the building collapsed, he was leaning against the side, just outside the main lobby. He looked up, just as the building started to collapsed, and ran. Somehow, he lived.) School was cancelled that day, and for the day after that. We were so close to Downtown Los Angeles, that we felt that it was a danger for us to be in school. I drove him, and there was hardly anyone on the freeway. I pulled into my driveway, and ran inside, to turn on the TV. I sat there, watching the coverage for a few hours, then fell asleep. The events of the day had worn me down mentally. September 12 - Morning I woke up, and thought it was all some big dream. Those buildings didn't fall, I joked "What an awful dream I had." Then I turned on the TV, to the local news. It hit me again, that this was not a dream. Initally, I did not know that the fire was due to a terroist attack. As I continued to watch the morning news a feeling of "this can't be real" overcame me when I saw the footage about the Twin Towers. I have to admit I was quite concerned about the people in New York, and how the students at Cheney High School were going to react. (I work at the high school, and a large segment of our student population are families attached the Fairchild Airforce Base.) Even during times of despair/sadness humans are capable of pulling together. Our students supported each other and the faculty during the entire day. When fathers and mothers were being shipped out, students would support each other. It was uplifting that during a time a despair for our country, the youth at our school did what they could to support each other and to remind us that life does go on. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up early on Tuesday morning-- I like the morning-time; I'm a "morning person." I had a Russian history class at 10:20am, but I wanted to have time to get some coffee and actually take a glance at my reading assignment. Before I showered, I pressed rewind on the VCR (watched "Pollock" previous night and had to return it). When I came back in the room, the tape had been rewound but the VCR had reverted to TV. That's when I saw it. The first plane had already hit one of the towers. At first I didn't think much of it... I don't know what I thought. But I kept watching the news. At that time, I can't remember what station I was watching, they were (the news anchors) trying to figure out if it was a terrorist attack or not. Then the second plane hit. I knew it was serious-- I was affected less, at very first, by the images than I was by the shock and fear reverberating in the journalists' voices: "Ohmigod! A second plane just hit!" "Did you just see that?" "Oh, those poor people!" Then, I don't know, a panic-button went off in my head or my heart... I lived in a sorority house at the time that had a paging system. It was still pretty early (by college-standards of time)-- but I woke everyone up. Some girls didn't get it, why it was so frightening. But I am a journalism and political theory major-- and it infuriated me that they were so...indifferent-- so, I scared them all. I made a bunch of girls cry. Then my mom called and made me cry. She called my two older sisters on the West coast, too. She really thought that the apocalypse was upon us. Maybe it is. It wasn't until the Pentagon got hit that I became nearly hysterical. I started to shake and cry. It was too scary. I didn't know what was happening. Nobody did. I ran to the student Catholic church or something like that-- it was right behind my house. I went with two other girls and we lit candles. And tried to pray. I used to be religious when I was in elementary and middle school-- I went to a parochial school back then. I couldn't think or pray. But I wanted to be with other people. I had already skipped Russian history class, but I walked to my next class (a magazine writing class). A few people were there and all we did was watch the news. Nobody talked much. By 3pm, I had my political theory senior seminar with some of the brightest, most articulate kids I know. We didn't know what to say. So we talked abuot our reading and stayed the full time. I came back and watched news. Then I went to the bar a lot. I drank. I turned 21 only 6 days before. I was hungover the next day. We watched the news. That's all we did. I became angry a few days later. College kids seemed really dumb and naive with all their peace rallys. Pray for peace; but prepare for war. Get real, you know? Get real. I know the US isn't perfect, any dummy knows THAT. We have a lot to fix. But we're not so bad. We do what any superpower would-- and I think we're an improvement on those those that have come before. All I could think was... I couldn't think. My head was empty. I dwell on it still. Those people high above the plane's impace in the WTC: they were so high above it. They were looking out the windows-- hundreds of them. Some jumped. What were they wearing? Who are they? How did they die? What do you do when you're going to die? Did they know it? Did they think they'd be saved? What does it feel like when you start to die? But I heard a quote somewhere, I can't remember where-- but it was so poignant and lovely... people call me morbid, but it's not that: "Only when worldly disaster has worked its utmost, can we realize that there remains something in a man's soul forever beyond the accidents of existence-- with power in its own right to make life beautiful." It seems like just yesterday. I've been watching various television shows that have been shown throughout the week. I realized, that on that day five years ago, I didn't cry. I am watching CNN's pipeline of unedited newscoverage from that day, as well as other news stations to watch the memorials. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sept. 11, 2001 I had was at a new job working for Americorps in one of the public schools. It was maybe my second week there and many of my co-workers were new to the City like I was. It was a time of transition from college to adult hood in many ways. I had also moved from one of the sister churches of the International Churches of Christ to another so I was trying to get to know people and live my spritual convictions in a new enviroment. It was ironic and sad, not to mention hard because even though freedom of religion is thought to be a given. My freedom had been constrained. I believe according to Matt 28:18-20 in helping other people have a relationship with God. For example asking if they would like to study the Bible or come to church. My contract which I didn't see untill the second week had very strict rules about speaking about God. To the point of even if I was in the car with a co-worker I would but the letter of it be breaking the rule to mention God. Prior to Sept. 11 I was praying to be able to talk about God. Post the very sad events of "911" our Nation prayed. At my job we were given time off to go worship, and even prayed as an office. I feel very sad for the people who lost their lives and I hope that nothing like it ever happens again. I also hope that we as a country and people world wide continue to turn to and seek God and the love and healing only he can bring. 2 Chronicles 7 :14-16 & Romans 13:8-10 These are the things which impacted me after the shock and reality of being attacked hit. Another sad memory I have is that in the week of Sept 11th at the school I was at, some of the kids who were of middle eastern background got beat up by some of the other kids. The good thing is it was stopped by the school. I am a minority. I know we need to be extreemly carefull as a Nation. However I hope we guard against hate and prejudice. Terrorist coming to America using our planes to kill our people ands tear down our twin towers. Everbody was sad on this day,police and firemen giving up our lives to help others keep theirs. And know were trying to make America a better and safer place. I remember 9/11/01 in my school's computer lab then all of a sudden I found out that the twin towers had went down. Everybody was worried , Parents picking up their children. In school they would'nt let us watch the news. All the sports was done for a week including mine. We awoke in the morning and began packing for our flight. Not long after we were up we heard on the television of the hit on the World Trade Centers. The thought that we could have been in the air that day was scary. I had tried to book a flight to leave early that morning but was unable to get one. I feel that God was telling me that it wasn't our time to go. We spent five extra days in Texas and when we did get to leave it was the longest flight of our lives. Everyone that boarded the plane you wondered, are they safe to be on my flight? Is something else going to happen? Now one year later it is such a great feeling to see that our country is still standing together and still remembering that terrible day. We are ONE NATION UNDER GOD and I hope that the United States always remembers September 11th, 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 I am fourteen years old and in 9th grade. I was in school on September 11, 2001. The day didn?t exactly start out normal because I woke up sick that morning and wasn?t going to go to school, but I decided to go anyways. I first heard from one of my friend s that two planes had crashed in to the New York City World Trade Towers. In gym class, we watched video clips and heard stories of the plane crashes. Then a few seconds later we heard about a plane hitting the Pentagon. Just watching the video clips made me feel even sicker than I already did. It was so weird seeing it happen. It was like I was there with it just watching and not being able to stop it, or it was some crazy movie that wasn?t real. Later we heard about the fourth crashing of a plane into the ground not too far away from Pittsburg Pennsylvania. When they said that the only thing that the terrorists had were box cutters and exacto knives it was almost like a joke. All of the people on three of the planes just couldn?t stop the terrorists. But then again if I was on that plane I would have been so scared I couldn?t move, let alone try to stop them. After they showed the clips a few more times they announced that Niagara Falls Air Force Base was on alert. The military personnel their had to go home and pack there bags then go straight back to work, because they were going some where top secret. That hit me hard and my eyes started to tear up because my Dad works at the base and he was going somewhere that I had no clue where he would be. I wouldn?t get to say bye to him, and I would have no clue if he was safe or not. That ended up being wrong though but I didn?t know that until I got home after school. My family and I ate dinner while watching the news, which is something our family never does. Afterwards my Dad told us all of the specifics as we watched the news again but he didn?t know much more than the news people did. I have to say that this terrorist attack definitely changed many individuals, families, friendships, and all of America. I want to say sorry to all of those who lost family and friends in this terrorist attack. Also a big thank you to God for keeping my family safe throughout this whole thing. I don?t think that all of the terrorist attacks are dome being planned, but I now have faith that we will be safe. Also I don?t think if there is another one it will be as big of a tragedy either. One thing I can say is that this terrorist attack has impacted America greatly. I think that one of its long term affects is that we grew closer as a nation. And I think we will always be! America watched in shock as the planes hit the WTC and the Pentagon. America retaliated, but without satisfying it?s citizen?s insecurities. Those insecurities included safety, opinions, and the future generations. During this period, not many things were certain, but one thing was; this day was never to be forgotten. A subject that came to mind after the death of thousands was the safety of my family. I started realizing how important my family was and how much I love them. I appreciated them more for how much they care about me. Although my family wasn?t effected directly, I realize d how much they meant to me. America?s attitude towards life was also changed by the attacks. People?s approach to common aspects of life as differed from before the tragedy. The lost of lives led to the lost of security and a sense of uncertainty. Some people?s opinions on the Middle East have also changed. Although we know the chances of being attacks are slim, we are still anxious when it comes to boarding plans or visiting big cities. President Bush asked us to return to our normal lives, but I do not think the disaster of 9/11 will ever be forgotten. I have heard many stories about how adults have a hard time dealing with 9/11, but it is even harder for the younger generation to cope with this tragedy. The world is already confusing to kids with the violence and drugs, but this event might be too much for them to comprehend. Major events such as this could teach the children of tomorrow to hate and discriminate. This is why I think schools should include this as a part of the material to properly inform the kids on the attack. Terrorism has definitely taken its toll on the United States. It has affected the ordinary things such as caring for loved ones and perspectives on things that never came to mind before. Ask anyone and they?ll tell you 9/11 is a dark day, but in a different perspective, you will realize that this event has brought the country together. It also made us appreciate our firefighters and policeman more. So, in conclusion, 9/11 is no doubt a sad day, but we should learn from our mistakes and move on to a newer and better tomorrow. I arrived at my office just in time to get to a conference room where several employees stood in disbelief at what had just happened. And then the 2nd plane hit! I was born and grew up in a small mid-New Jersey town and moved away before the trade center towers were built, but I followed their progress with great interest. My husband, who had never been to NYC before, and I visited the City a few yrs ago and had a drink at the WTC (my husband had to borrow a jacket since he didn't have one with him that day; he's short and the jacket sleeves were about 8" too long... but the view was great!). A year later I still can't believe that this terribe assault took place and I still cry when faced with sstories, etc about the event and it's ramifications... With all it's problems, I've always loved the City; it's a symbol of my beloved country to me. I pray that nothing even remotely similar to this ever happens again here in the USA. The people of the world, especially those who are leaders or who wield great influence, need to come to the understanding that all people need the same things to flourish. We need to learn to empathize with others, to trust, to not covet the property or land of others, to share and to live in peace with our neighbors - whether next door or across the ocean. The first accounts were sketchy and I thought that the incident was that a helicopter had crash landed on the helipad at the White House. On listening further I realized that it was plane that crashed into the pentagon. That was frightening and I thought that was the end of it until I realized no, that was not all that both the towers of the World Trade center had too been damaged. I with my 4yr old son rushed home like many others and turned on the television to see the horrible shots of planes crashing into the twin towers. Yes that was hard to explain to my son but what was even harder was the WHY? question. WHY did they want to hurt people? Why did they want to tear down those buildings? I remember it being a bad day to start off-I had come in late because I wasn't feeling well, but still decided to go to school nonetheless. I walked straight into my Spanish class where my teacher greeted me with a smile, and later on while the rest of the class was working she came over and gave me a hug-I guess she could tell that I wasn't feeling well. Maybe this wouldn't be such a bad day after all. Then I got up to my Math class and heard some of the kids talking about planes crashing into buildings. They way they were talking about it made me think it was a joke. They were even laughing. Then my principle came over the intercom and made the announcement: two planes have hit the World Trade Center, another the Pentagon, and a fourth crashed in Pennsylvania. I just sat there; the whole room went silent. I was immediately outraged at those boys in my class who had been laughing, but when I looked back at them and saw their ashen faces, I knew that they didn't think it was real either. I was suddenly filled with an intolerable hatred. I couldn't believe that someone could have such disregard for human life. What would motivate these people to murder so many people; leave so many children without parents, leave husbands and wives spouseless, and leave parents childless. I had never imagined such cruelty in my life, and now that I was face-to-face with it, I was overcome with extreme hatred. Then when I went home I talked with my family, and we watched the evening news. To see so many people who have endured so much tragedy rise above and dismiss their hate of these people and declare their love of their country and those around them astounded me. I was overcome with a sense of faith in the American people, and I knew that no matter what these people did, we would overcome. Tell us your story: At 14.45 hours local time, I heard my pregnant daughter-in-law cry out: Peter, they are bringing down the world and she became so pale and for a moment I feared for her unborn baby, she was so cramped. Together we wayched the second plane hit, awfull. They must have known what they did, nobody turns a plane the way they did in the last couple of seconds, just to make sure that the tower would crumble and fall. The rest of the day was awfull,more planes came down and the home-situation became worse, so my daughter in law and me made a long walk outside alongside the canal where the house was situated. She cried a lot but finally became calm again. Even today it haunts me once in a while, those pictures of New York and the fire etc. But when flying, I don't have any fears at all. If your time is in, it's in. I hope that the brave New York people will rebuild the towers as they were, not smaller. They must NOT diminish the size because of those lunatics. Tell us your story: My co-worker, Andrea, arrive at work at approximately 7:50 a.m. (CDT) with the news that an airplane had crashed into one of the WTC Towers. We immediately went to our lunch room where we were joined by the rest of our co-workers and watched in horror and disbelief at the scene that was unfolding right before our very eyes. Being a very emotional person, I had to leave due to the many emotions that were traveling through my veins. When I learned of the second impact, I almost fell apart. How could anyone be so heartless as to do something like this? It took a while for me to regain my composure and then the third strike! What was going on in this wonderful country of ours? The scenes that were being televised were unbelievable. During the entire day tears welled up in my eyes and I would cry uncontrollably. At home that evening my family and I were afraid to turn off the television for fear we would miss the latest update, but watching it non-stop was becoming more upsetting. It was like living a bad dream. I had no idea what those directly involved in these strikes were feeling. The tragedy was too great to comprehend and one that I pray each day no one in the United States of America will ever have to go through again. All of this taught me a great lesson. In February of this year I was diagnosed with LCIS, a non-invasive form of breast cancer, but still a cancer. My first thought was for our children and grandchildren, and then the disbelief that this was happening to me. But when I brought myself back to reality, I realized that I was alive and could beat my diagnosis. After my six weeks of (5 days every week) radiation, I celebrated life for the very first time. Through everything that has happened in the last year, I have come to realize that having the cleanest car on the parking lot at work, the trendiest clothes or hair style, the cleanest house or the best looking yard on the block is not that important to me any longer. If people think these things are what make them truly happy, then I pity them. Look around at your family and friends. What would you do if in the blink of an eye just one of them was snatched from you and you would never see them again? This can happen, September 11, 2001 proved this to us. Hug your children, no matter what age they are, and tell them repeatedly how much you love them and spend some time with them just talking and getting to know each other. This means no TV, no DVD/VCR and no computer/video games of any kind. Sit and talk with your spouse and let them know how important they are to you and how much you love them. Visit your parents, brothers, sisters, etc. as much as you can. You never know when it will be your last chance. About 25 years ago in Sunday School I had a teacher who use to leave us with the following thought quite often - 'Things don't just happen, they're planned. They're planned by God's almighty hand.' Maybe September 11, 2001 was God's way of getting us all back on the right track and teaching us to appreciate what is really important in life. The price that was paid for this lesson is far greater than anything I would have ever wanted to happen. But each of the individuals that gave their lives so we may live are my heroes. Tell us your story: i was at work chatting and carrying on as usual in a days work when i received a phone call from my mother i spoke to her and she made me aware of the first attack and we were talking about this awful "accident" and all of those poor people on the plane and in the building. as i was talking to her and looking at the tv the second plane hit and immediately my stomach felt very sick and i knew this wasnt an accident that this was a very sick act of terrorism. i was stunned and hung the phone up and ran back in the kitchen at work and informed my coworkers and they didnt even believe me at first. we all ran out and began to stare at the tv and then the pentagon was struck and bush wanted all the planes down off the ground and then the pennsylvania plane was found out about and i remember just being so scared and feeling so helpless in wishing there was somthing-anything i could do. i can still remember a newscaster remarking about the people jumping out of the buildings that if they think its better by jumping imagine what it is like up there. i will never forget that day and the days that followed and i will never forget all the people that lost their lives and the families broken by this god bless all of you.
