<text>It was early in the morning and i was getting ready to go to school. I had not turned any radios or any of my televisions on so i had no clue what was happening until my door bell rang and i saw my friend looking very distraught. As we were walking to the bus stop he was relaying the whole story to me about the attacks. " The Twin Towers are gone!" was the first thing i heard and i did not understand.
At this point I had not seen the news, so i did not actualy see the destruction that went on, but when I got to school all of the TV's were on and when i finaly did see what happened for my own eyes, I was shocked and it reallly hit me deep down inside that this was the beginning of something terrible. Little did i know that life as we all knew it would never be the same again.</text>

<text>I will never forget the first events of September 1, 2001. I was in the hospital where I worked as a labor and delivery nurse. The only difference was that this time I was a patient--a pregnant patient. I had just turned 36 weeks pregnant and was getting back into my bed after my shower, when I started contracting. I had been in the hospital for 3 weeks on bedrest, for blood pressure problems caused by the pregnancy. My doctor decided to induce my labor that morning, so I was getting my belongings together to move to a labor room down the hall. I had the television set on, watching the Today show with Katie Couric and Matt Lauer, and I looked up in time to see the first plane hit one of the towers and hear Matt say that they thought it had been a air traffic controller related accident. My nurse came into my room, with a wheelchair to transport me down the hall, and we commented to one another and also to my husband, that we didn't believe that to be the case. I arrived in my new room and was getting out of the wheelchair and into my new bed, and my husband turned on the television set in time to see the second plane hit the tower, and without missing a beat, I looked at my spouse and my nurse and told them that was NOT a air traffic control error, that was terrorism, and we had just been attacked. Several minutes later, the news was in and I had been right. It was on the news for the rest of my hospitalization and for days after.

My doctor and midwife induced my labor on September 11, 2001, and my beautiful blonde haired, blue eyed baby girl was born on September 12, 2001 at 2pm. To this day, I refer to her birth as my "good news after a really bad day".

Her birth renewed my hope for our nation and helped me to stay focused on the future of our country and the direction that it is going in. God willing there will still be a United States of America for my daughter and her generation to enjoy as generations have before her.

Thank you for the chance to share my story. My heart goes out to the women who lost spouses in that tragedy, and then delivered babies later on by themselves--without their mates by their sides. I also feel saddened especially for pregnant women who lost their lives and their spouses left behind. There is a double loss in those cases. Finally, I grieve for all the lives lost in that days awful string of events. I pray that we, as a nation, can continue to heal and move forward in a positive light, led by God, and guided by His wisdom and shielded by His might.

<text>September 11 seemed just like anyother day. i was staying at my uncles house in lower manhattan when i woke up to the sound of my uncles fire scanner going off. i woke up and all i remeber hearing is that their was an explosion at the world trade center. and some saw an airplane fly into it. thats all i heard for the next ten minutes until i heard the dispatcher call out my uncles engine company to go the world trade center my heart stopped and i feared for my uncle. i called my mom in ohio and asked if she had seen the news and she said no. i told her what had happened and told her that uncle rich was on his way to the world trade center. 5 min later as i sat on the couch watching the news my uncle called me from his cell phone and told me that if he wasnt home i knew why and i told him to call me before dark. he promised and told me to tell my mom an dad that he loved us all. and that was the last i heard from my uncle for two days. my mom drove 10 hours to the city and stayed with me she tried to get me home but i said i wanted to wait for uncle rich to come home. that night i has seen a FDNY chief car pull up and i figured it was my uncle but i looked out the window and it wasnt him it was the chief and a preist.I fell to the floor and just crie with my mom. 9/11 ruined my life it took away my hero my uncle.</text>

<text>I was trying to restart my mineral business by changing credit card service providers over the phone via TDD {Telacaptioning device for deaf} in the kichen. My wife Dixie was sitting down to "watch" the morning news when the annoucement came over the TV in close captioning about something happening in New York City. This information was of interest to me as that is where I'm from. The shock was great,of seeing what happened. At first I though I was watching some special movie effect. Then it dawned on me that this was real,I felt sick. The rest of the day was painful and sad,it will live with me.
Richard Clair

I was watching "Today" on Tuesday morning, the journalist mentioned something happened at WTC,then TV showed the great smoking coming out the building. I was shocked and was glued to this horrible news till I had to leave for out of the town trip. I was stunned from what I had witnessed this horrible scene after the second plane crashed to other building, it was unbelievable but unfortunately it actually happened. I kept seeing the picture of fleeing people with ashes falling down on them in my mind... I would never forget it

<text>At 6:30 am I was wheeled into the operating room at UIC Hospital, chicago. My surgery was major and was expected to take up to 18 hours. As an airline employee, little did I know that while surgeons were saving my life many of my fellow co-workers were losing there's. My family's concern for me went to concern for others and through out the course of the day as they watched tv. They became grateful that I was in a operating room and not working at the airport. When surgery was finally over, the surgeon sought out my wife to tell her what a success surgery was, as he was explaining to her, he glanced over at the television, with shock he said, "What happened today." No one in the operating room, had known about the day's events. When I was moved to ICU, my wife and children came in, there was a TV on. My wife knew that if I heard the news that I may think I was in a coma for 10 years. She explained to the nurse that I work for an airline and the news needed to be broken to me gently. The following morning the nurse gave me the news. I will never know where it came from but, I responded Osma Bin Laden.
I will always rember 9/11 as the day my life was saved and others were not.</text>

<text> <p align="center"><b>TOWERS OF WORDS: THE PLACE OF POETRY IN CRISIS

TOWER TWO</b> </p align>
<font size="1">1</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;In times of crisis, poets lose words. Find some:
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; soul, soul I say, to name the smoke-beings like
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;constellations in the night sky of this city and cities to come.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Focus the Muses, write while trembling, deliver eternity
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;sky of this city and&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; cities to come.

<font size="1">5</font> gone gone away down in the downward up. ward rush of howl. ing graveyard lava air
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Earthquake/shatter, volcano/ash, tidal wave/fear, fire/purify, wind/words disappear
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Amazed I wake /committed crimes/vanishing eyes/it's different now/vanishing
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I expected a second moon or sun to appear
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And radiance, the gleam of it at the edges of clouds, the
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;gilt of clouds in the&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;blue sky, the blue sky, the blue sky.

<font size="1">10 </font>&nbsp;&nbsp;A tremendous roar came over our shoulders, ratcheting our heads slightly to the right, a
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;huge what looked like a 747 at eye level & moving, then steel into steel, glass into glass.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Women in the Middle East knew nothing about it. They were washing clothes.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Planes crashing on the windowsill.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;"Did the pilots get hurt?" asked the lover of pilots, a young
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;boy still in love with heroes, when the second plane hit.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She held her breath-but, more, wished to hold his. Him. A hymn. A him of words.

<font size="1">15</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;I, no victor, saw birds in flames. What were their names?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Victor's daughter dances the deck of the red tugboat,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;marks of embers on her arms, soles of his shoes molten.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dusty seagulls, powdered roaches, gray-flecked squirrels, ashy mice.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;White birds with brown bellies high against the blue sky in Brooklyn, escape of the charred memos.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; My child walks thru inches of dust that is human and she weeps for her mother.
<font size="1">20</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;We are breathing the dead, taking them into our lungs as living we had taken them into our arms.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<i>"We are all just walking each other home."</i>

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;two horizontal towers were born, those fleeing fire and those coming close. help help helping out!
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; She cries, her hair a morning ruin: See our burnt balconies of air.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We're breathing it in, all of it, all of them.
<font size="1">25</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;Ash-light this mask my eyes refuse to hide behind.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I look through a pupil of fire, an eyelid of ash
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;while running from a truth we cherish yet cannot abide.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;into the residue of those screams and shouts unheard in the multilayered collapse revealed again
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;and again via satellite as above and below the creatures deny the supremacy of architecture,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;a lock of flame-red hair or a spoke from her wheelchair,
<font size="1">30</font>&nbsp;&nbsp; but grief is my address.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I rise through the air, prayers are not what carries me.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I face the universe when I speak to the dead.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; He was a friend of a friend of a friend; he knew his own mind
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; But never imagined how mornings can turn, how day is
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;relentless, how night under the lights is a burning zero.

<font size="1">35</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;Sunset over Jersey catches the sky has changed. Cranes slam metal into the barges somebody hose me down.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; We stood in crippled traffic, on our way to close Claudia's Brooklyn Heights window against invading ashes.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The pigeons are confused. Me, I keep my head down
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I send my eyes to penetrate the heart of the city.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;New York City, capital of pain, capital of desire.
<font size="1">40</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;The emptiness at the center has made the city
  sacred.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; That is our own black milk crossing the sky.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; All afternoon, I watch a thin stream of water shoot into a flaming highrise. The fire never goes out.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;The image never fades,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The smoke from that skyline stings the eyes of a nation,
<font size="1">45</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;Not even the ash of Vesuvius could cover the strata of terror that day, the day before or after.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;every citizen to smash ash on their foreheads, ash Tuesday, ash robes, ash socks, ash in your soup.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I still have dust on my shoes from standing too close to ground zero,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So named it got so quickly, like pinning captions on a blizzard.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;new york city is in a state of raw war, manhattan a battle ground zero.
<font size="1">50</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;The military saviour's spine is over-straight, like a full-bellied sideboard, comportment of a chief.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Let's trade, my Hank Aaron for your Nolan Ryan, bologna for tuna, my 35 San Gennaro tickets for the big yellow bunny,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;my sister Rebecca for your brother, Abul.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Unarmed Afghani women bare their faces to print's dead eyes in America.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In Bhopal they're still looking for Warren Anderson.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;guilty, me guilty, you guilty, the whole damn country guilty of Middle East/non-white hostility
<font size="1">55</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;-i.e.,"If anyone was ever right or wrong, this time they lost it."
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;"But war it is and it is our destiny or so it seems," sighs the old man on Flanders fields

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Maria asks now: how attain twin-towers attar-nirvana; now ever we're yester- or reincarnate kyries?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;because it is the dream of every artist to contact the world
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;of CNN and mashed potatoes-"comfort" food in, along with Ralph Lauren American flag sweaters.
<font size="1">60</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;I never much liked the news-and now I know why!
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Too much African bones buried under all that money.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bow-legged thieves, insolvent priests, con artists, tender beggars, all come upon you to salvage what's left.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Corrupt souls bring death to innocence and fear gives birth to Madison Avenue pictorials,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wanting to be mistaken for one of them, always so busy so noisy.
<font size="1">65</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;I want to know did the pyramids have a 110th floor?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When I was on the very top I was lost in a cloud.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; You lifted me up and showed me all. Will my love survive your fall?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Do shaking & silence yield to reason and reflection/to mirrors red, white and blue?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Let us not tremble. Let us not be quiet
<font size="1">70</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;A maze of grace? How great the art? We shall overcome?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Wisdom and Dharma shall prevail!
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Sleep with the radio on all night.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;blast blast wakens us, then sleep-we've become infants of these putrid waters, sad-dream dark.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Have you ever seen a suicidal parakeet?
<font size="1">75</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;Well it's been about an hour since an hour ago.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Absence is the essence of being here & everywhere at the same time.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;A grief lab is built with a thousand entrance doors and a million potential exits.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Winter is coming. I tell myself to tell myself warm.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Where does a life begin & end? How fast? How far? Who but the dead can claim an end to numbers?
<font size="1">80</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;do not give up on me us you them lucky lucky lucky number number.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;someone rolled the dice: chance still unabolished.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Once we knew how to count by the billions of years we were not here.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Death has done its thing and moved on/an
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;eternal stillness in the south of motion,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Shadows feign surprise at how frail they are,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; how easily they vanish, own the peace.
<font size="1">85</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;Now that death has spoken, let the angels speak
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; from the white porcelain city,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; So many wings; with eardrums open.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dundun speaks because of tension on skin, squeezing the bandages of injured history.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Future Day of Remembrance: They tried to destroy us. They didn't. Let's eat.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; They? We are they, and they are us, united in our fragile humanity
<font size="1">90</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;How does the healing of so many extreme days begin?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; When all the meanings have changed, where is the path?

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; For the first time, I don't have an answer, instead I'm listening.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I hold these syllables like hands on a clock feeling the sound of time through its fingers.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; With one sullen syllable, I peel back a segment of sky.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Afraid of syllables used to attach wings to breaths,
<font size="1">95</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;The words irreversible, unmistakable, come to me. Invincible leaves.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Words on page, mete out this woe; words on page undo sorrow.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Bury your breath, then sing this woe a wing a minute these days
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Of black and white marks that express shades of grey in charred hearts.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Forgetting names is when it hit me,
<font size="1">100</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;a line that ends, ends at the sea.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; And just think of literature, of literature we have not learned to do without.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;sour hearts blacken the new page, rage is only one emotion swirling in the rubble.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;26 letters is all we've got to make sense of the space between the canyons in our hearts.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Dante's mythic animals, Chippewa, Sappho's curse, village-explainer American flags? flags?
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; How about poetry's long stride, Whitman: we need you to save the covenant, we can't cover up
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the genitalia of old Roman copies in the Justice Department, too late & soon.
<font size="1">105</font>&nbsp;&nbsp;As if you could or could not, would or would not, were or were not; as if the day ended and a new
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;one popped out of the imagination, free of the shadows, hurtling to an end of hurt, beyond
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;sorrow's gate; but could not nor can not, would not nor will not; as if promise were just make
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;believe and make-believe a veil behind a veil; as if the news were never told and ignorance took
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;the place of this incessant, miserable rain.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Love in the time of globalized greed and Day-glo diarrhea, of privatized prisons and public
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;poverty, of preordained propaganda and gentrified genocide, of homogenized hate and
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;consumer circumcision, of paranoid patriotism and preemptive poverty, of
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;prepackaged pollution and preempted poetry.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;eye travel underground over rails of thigh bones, surrounded by my caboose of poetic lines of love,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;eye surface above ground at the speed of light, on time, inside time, singing the blues, riffin'
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;licks of jazz & rock n roll, survey the empty space of once uponatimesleekhighsteel & glass
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;twinedificesofhubriticglory, see them smoldering there now in a heap of smoking memory,
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;after castration by two swift blows of "blowback"
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;I wrote this entire poem my line not among the living lines appropriate lines

I can?t believe people can get so angry when we ask them to think of what the United States may have done to deserve this. Can we be so arrogant that we refuse to believe that we may be wrong? If we are so righteous, there should be no threat to our ego when we entertain thoughts of our own possible shortfalls.

Who are we to ask, ?How could God let something like this happen?? God does not let anything happen that is not according to his divine will. Who are we to ask, ?How could God let something like this happen to us?? As if we deserve anything at all from God. God who created us; God who provides for us; God who gave us this beautiful world to live in; God who we turn our backs on when he makes our life easy; and God who we run scared and crying to when he makes us work for our happiness.

The key is to draw closer to God in all aspects of our life, and rely on Him whether or not life is going the way we like. We must also strive to keep this world beautiful, by first realizing that it does not belong to us, and treating it as something that we do not own, as if expecting the owner to return soon.

In light of what happened on September Eleventh, Two-Thousand and One, we must realize that God has a reason for letting something as atrocious as this happen to innocent people, and we can only speculate as to what this reason might be. Perhaps God has let us get so far down to get our attention. Perhaps he has exhausted all other possibilities, and must now resort to what we would refer to as drastic measures to make us realize that he is what we should give our allegiance to, rather than the money we so fully rely on.

<text>I listen to the radio at night while sleeping. I was half awake on that morning, laying in the darkness listening to my little daughter breath and the soft jazz from the station. My daughter was born 8/29/2001 with a reflux problem so I was never really alseep for long anyway.

I remember the announcer saying that there had been a plane crash in New York. It sounded like an accident but I couldnt sleep anyway so I got up and went into the living room, taking my little daughter with me. She cried alot, at the time, because of the reflux and I didnt want her to wake my fiance.

I sat down and turned the tv on CNN. I think my heart just stopped. I was so shocked. I saw the whole in the side of the tower and I knew it wasnt an accident. Then the second tower was struck. I sat there stunned for maybe a minute before I ran into the bedroom and woke up my fiance. It ws impossible for me to imagine anyone sleeping through this.

I was so shocked I didnt cry right away. I watched and watched and then as we were sitting there I saw this huge cloud of smoke forming and I told my fiance,

"It's gone honey, that building is gone!" I still wasnt crying, I dont know why. My heart was beating so hard, on the bottom of the channel I saw the news ticker saying that there were other crashes at the Pentagon, in Pennsylvania. I thought, "This is it!" I really thought that this was going to be nuclear war.

I just sat there all day holding my tiny baby so close and I was so scared, I was in shock I know that now. I didnt call anyone. I didnt go anywhere and I dont know why. I think I was literally terrified.

Later that day I was in the living room again and there was this young female reporter and she was talking with this crowd of people on the street near Ground Zero.

She was really trying to be so strong but there were people all around her sobbing and telling stories about people they were searching for. She was repeating the information to the camera and showing the photos of these people's missing loved ones.

She tried to be strong but eventually she broke down and for whatever reason I broke down with her, I sobbed for so long just knowing how she was feeling. That feeling of helplessness and the ability to do nothing really except listen and be a witness.

I have never seen her on TV again after that but I will always remember her face and her tears.

I developed a heart condition shortly after 9/11, and there was no medical reason for it. It was due to stress, from the baby from the world, from everything. Goes to show you that this thing changed people the world over.

I dont know what to say to the families of the people that left us that day except that I am sorry for their loss and that I am thinking about them, they are never alone.</text>

When I was at the bus stop I put on my walkmen. Then I heard that a plane crash into the trade centers. I didn't think it was as bad as it was but when I got to school my teacher had it on and i couldn't believe it! After that was so full with auger and sadness.
The whole school day everyone was talking about it. we watch it on T.V almost every class. when I got home I sat on my moms bed and did my home work and watch it. My mom talk abouit it alot and it felt good that we could talk.
That day will never be forgotten. We will always remeber everyone that was in that trade centers and the fire fighters. God Bless them!

<text>I was sitting in the living room. I was a stay-at-home mom, though not by choice. I had been trying to find a job in the Information Technology field for over a year, but the area where I lived was more engineering than IT. I lived about five air miles north of the Patuxent Naval Air Station, and Research and Development facility; I was also about three air miles from the Calvert Cliffs Nuclear Power Facility.

I was watching PBS with my not-quite one-year old son, Joshua. My four-year old daughter, Majel, was at pre-K at Patuxent Elementary School. My husband of 18 months Fred, was at work.

The phone rang, and I saw on the Caller ID that it was Fred. This was not unusual because we often talked five or more times a day. I answered the phone, and he said, "Are you watching TV?". I said, "Yes, with Joshua." He said that someone had just flown a plane into the World Trade Centers in New York. I thought he had heard it wrong. Fred has a tendency to exaggerate things a bit.

I switched the TV to CNN, and couldn't believe my eyes. It was surreal. I watched as the second tower was hit. Then, one tower fell. I'll remember what the CNN anchor said until the day I die: "What can you say?" as the tower fell. The Pentagon was hit. Rumors of a hit at the State Department, where my father's company has a huge contract. My extended family all live in New York, and most work in the City. Were they OK? Was my father at a meeting in the State Department? He had contracts at the Pentagon, too. Then the plane in Shanksville. Did our fighters have to shoot down a plane full of Americans?

A slow realization hit me. I live sandwiched between two prime targets: a nuclear power plant and a naval air station. Fred was on the same wavelength, because seconds later, the phone rang, and Fred said, "We need to get out of there, and go to Mom's." We decided that our daughter should stay at the school as long as it took for Fred to come home, and me to pack us up.

That's what I did. I packed baby food, formula, diaper, wipes, clothes for all of us, important papers, and a few momentos. Fred came home, but only after his bosses gave him a hard time for being so scared. (Fred was later let go from that company, and has always felt that it was due to him leaving the job site on September 11th.)

The rush of emotions over the course of that day was amazing. Disbelief that the Twin Towers were gone. My family was from New York, and I had eaten dinner at the Windows on the World many times, been on the observation deck many times, made fun of my step-mother because she was afraid of heights and wouldn't go near the edge (she bought a lot of momentos from the Gift Shops!). Anger that people could do this to each other. Fear for the safety of friends and family in Washington and New York. Sadness that belief in God could be so twisted to produce such evil. Anxiety about being so close to potential targets. Confusion about what was going on, where, when, and how.

On the drive to Fred's mom's house, the contrails of airplanes were all over the place. There are several military bases between our house and Fred's mom's, and the jets were obviously scrambled. Once there, we saw a plane overhead without any clear markings on it, and called the closest military base. Minutes later, two fighter jets went zooming directly overhead. Americans aren't used to living this way.

I called one of my uncles in New York, and confirmed that they were all ok. I called my father, and they had not yet accounted for all 1,200 of his employees.

Fred's cousin worked in the Pentagon, and called Fred's mom's house to tell us she was safe, and trying to get home. She had witnessed some very horrible things, and barely escaped death. She had been stuck at the copy machine, which was acting up. She couldn't make her rounds because of the machine. Her rounds took her through the section that was destroyed. If that copier hadn't malfunctioned, and she was on schedule, she'd have been more seriously hurt. That haunts her, and she hasn't set foot in the Pentagon since.

My fears for our country, my shame at the anger I feel, my concerns for my children all became very focused that day. I now work for a contractor that supports the Patuxent Naval Air Station. All day long, I hear and see military aircraft flying around. It scares me and provides me comfort, at the same time. America is a wonderful place. Why do people hate us for being Americans? What did those almost 3,000 men, women, and children ever do to anyone to deserve such a fate?

I hope that this September 11 Digital Archive provides some insight for future generations. Evil exists, but God will triumph in the end. God Bless America, and keep us safe from further harm.

Requiem aeternam dona ets, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat ets (Grant them eternal rest, O Lord, and may perpetual light shine upon them.)</text>

              <text>My diary entry of Sept. 16, 2001:

On Tuesday Sept. 11, 2001 at 8:45AM and again at 9:03 AM two planes were crashed into the WTC- first building 1 then building 2.
I worked in building two on the 25Th floor. I sat in a flexible office space in the
SW corner of the building.
It was a beautiful but an odd day. I didn't get my usual morning nap since I had a rude seat mate who kept bumping me while he read his morning paper. I remember being a bit cranky and annoyed. It seems so petty now.

I was in the office at around 8:20 am, Like most mornings I had stopped for my pineapple
orange juice and buttered bagel, something I did regular as clockwork every morning I was a residents of the WTC.

I was logged into my system at work and was just finishing up reading e-mails. The last one I was reading, probably because I was a bit cranky was annoying me. I was almost done and about to start work on a large inventory project for one of my customers before I had to head off to a half day of training at a class call Trusted advisor. How that name seems to me so silly and odd for what happened next.

The lights for a blink of a second dimmed and a large explosion sounded, I thought of a
large electric transformer had blown and remember thinking I shouldn't have been able to
hear that from our roof. Then a large rumbling sound like a large empty street dumpster
being rolled over rough roads causing the lid to rattle and make a large noise It was odd
what my brain identified the things happening around me and how wrong those guesses were.

I got up from my desk and walked toward the window area and saw all this debris falling past the window. It was papers, and large shingle like items. There was smoke and things on fire. Fire balls the size of basketballs were falling down and some had landed on the roof across the way from us. I remember they looked like campfires set up all over the roof.

I saw Bob & John in the next hallway and we all seemed surprised. Another co- worker Dan came from behind me. I remember asking if we should call down to the front lobby so they could call the fire dept. and tell them that the roof across the way was on fire. We couldn't find any emergency number. I don't remember thinking of calling 911, how odd to forget that information.
In seconds we had walked back to our desks had tried for an emergency number, tried our
receptionist desk and finding no answer Dan suggested we evacuate.

I grabbed my knapsack, eyeglasses looked at my office and left things as they were, email
waiting to be sent, breakfast unopened and not eaten, some pictures from my recent vacation ready to be mailed to my family and the customer inventory documents. I can see this all so clearly.

Dan and I went through the front desk area to the stair case. I knew I didn't want to use the elevator and the final decision to go down was based on finding the stairwell already very full of people already exiting down. Things were orderly and yet with the crowd all were letting others join the crowd going down. It was calm pretty quiet, little conversations and murmurs going through the crowd.

I remember the lady walking down the stairs in front of me with no shoes on, she was holding her heels in her hands. A lady to the side of me , we bumped into each other as sometimes happens in a crowd as you get into the pace. How we both politely excused ourselves and not being sure who bumped who. I also remember the few doors as we were going down with the doors propped open and the urge to close them in case of a fire but yet unable to lift my arms and do this as I went by. I just kept going down. It went very fast. I remember seeing floor 10 then floor two and we were exiting the stairwell.

We exited the stairwell to the mezzanine level looking right out on to Liberty and I could see up the street to the Battery park Garage sign. Dan was there and at some point another
coworker Beth joined me at the window. I saw more debris and things on fire. I saw the cars in the parking lot across the street on fire, more campfire size fires on the roofs.
I remember thinking if there were any hurt people on the street and didn't really see any
one but did see lots of debris. I then turned behind me and looked across the way to the
side that exited to the courtyard area of the WTC and seeing even more debris and balls of fire falling and deciding i couldn't go out that way It wasn't safe. I remember hearing the first building announcement I was aware of that said ?there was a fire in building one and the fire department had it under control. You do not have to evacuate and you could return to your office.?

I remember saying to Beth that I wasn't going back upstairs I was going to do some errands and come back. I stepped away from the window and looked over the railing and could see into the promenade area and it was very full of people all calmly but quickly heading toward the #1 subway and the exits. I don't like crowds and seeing a orderly line of people at the escalator going down to the crowded promenade area I decided to head through the lobby toward Broadway and saw an exit across the lobby.

Dan rejoins us or was there all the time and we go through the security turnstiles through the lobby of building four and out into the street. There is a man who by the uniform I knew was a WTC security staff who was calmly telling us to quickly move away, don't run, don't look up because debris is falling. I cant seem to do much but walk and follow instructions. The ground is littered with paper and tufts of foam? plane boarding passes and I remember thinking I didn't know there was a travel agency so close by, that was where the bomb went off, for at this point this is what I had believed happened. What I am seeing doesn't make sense and I can feel my brain taking the information in but yet not able to process and identify what happened. I almost fall over a man who stops in front of me to pick up one of the boarding passes another odd thing I think but I keep moving. I hear the security guard calmly and very soothingly repeating instructions.
I also start hearing another voice in my head that is saying I am not safe and I must
go home.

Its strange some people are moving away from the building others are looking toward it.
I pass another odd thing, a man photographing behind me, at least it seemed odd at that
moment. I cant stop and I don't look back I just keep moving ahead. I see Beth and Dan walking together. The street is full of people mostly walking away from the building people are upset crying huddled together. I keep moving forward. I keep hearing that voice in my head telling me to go home, I am not safe here.

They are okay but with walking down twenty five flights and what's going on my pace is
slower then theirs. I try and figure out where its safe to stop and call my partner CAF.
I am scared but calm. I don't remember any noise but what I thought was a helicopter and
thinking they are going to rescue people who have gone up to the roof. I think that's good
it gives me comfort. I can't look back, I look forward and the street is empty of traffic.
Its odd, its full of people. I pass a coke truck stopped in the middle of the block,
emergency lights blinking, door open. Another odd thing,
I walk another half a block and see a doorway that seems safe for me to stop and call
Carol. As I am trying to get my cell phone to work the call time says 9:03 and another
explosion. Call doesn't go through I don't know if my knees buckled or I am knocked down by something but I find myself on my hand and knees. My left palm hurts, I think I have scrapped it I have no scrape mark on my palm or knees. In trying to get up and I look back I see the crowds behind me start to run. It is like a godzilla movie and the monster is coming. Being in the doorway keeps me from being trampled as I am still down and then I see the large hole in tower one. From this angle I cant see my tower 2. Its burning Its got a large hole. I now see the people trapped. waving, the people falling, most I believe already dead as they roll down like rag dolls, I think not at all like you see in the movies. Its so horrible, its so sad, so painful, I feel helpless.
I start to cry and shake and in seconds I am trying to decide what to do and how I can get
up. and then I get up and hear that voice again this time shouting about going home and not being safe. This would be all I can hear till I get home. I start walking toward the seaport to an unfamiliar section of the city. I am still crying and trying to get my cellphone to work to reach carol, need to tell her I am okay. I keep walking and then change direction to head uptown and to Penn station to get a train to come home. I am still not aware that the hole I saw was from a plan and the second explosion was not another bomb. The crowd was blocking the street a bit as rescue vehicles are trying to get through.
I walk past people stopped on the side hugging each other crying, people looking confused not knowing what happened. I am walking, I can feel I am thirsty and getting dehydrated but I cant stop for the bottle of water in my knapsack on my back. I am not in control of my walking I can only move forward. I see empty stores, closed stores. and then ahead I see a clump of trees like a park. Its the open area in front of pace university and there are large crowds of people. I finally can stop to rest a second. Get some water and try the cell phone again with no luck.
I decide to try to find a real phone. I go into pace university lobby and with many others
try and get a phone, security has hands full and I leave and see a subway with people
with a surprised look on faces leaving the subway. Its the #4 I don't know where it could
take me but If I head uptown it can get me out of here and close to home.
I go down, I am scared but that voice is still telling me what to do. I don't know where I
am going. I go up this long hallway and my legs feel like I am going to collapse. I have to
keep going or I will drop here. I cant seem to stop crying. I get to the turnstile and my
metro card I realize was in my pants pocket and I am grateful I don't have to dig in my
knapsack for it. I left it there from my commute this morning another odd thing, I am such a creature of habit. I don't know why I had not put it away that morning.

I get on a train that seems to just pull in as I get there. I get in the car and people seem to be looking at me oddly, despite this being NY a crying women must seem odd. These people don't know what has happened yet. I have trouble speaking when someone talks to me. I said something but cant remember what.
At the first stop two men get on and they say that a plane has hit the WTC.
This is the first time I know what happened but they seemed to think it was small private
plane. I feel sad, I think someone had a heart attack or something and didn't mean to hit the building. I get off at 42nd street and get out see a pay phone and try to call home but
its dark and I cant read my cell phone to get the number to call carol. I reach her aunt
who I tell her to call Carol and that I am okay and am going to Penn station and I don't know when I will be home. I think I am calm but they say I was pretty hysterical.

I am now trying to think which train will take me to Penn station and someone stops
me to see if I need help I tell them I need to get home and they ask me where home is I
remember saying Penn station. How strange the way the mind functions. I don't live there but someone in the city wouldn't know my town and how I could get there.

I am pointed in another direction walk that way and again as get to the platform another
train shows up. no waiting. I get to the next train and again cant figure which direction
and another person asks if I need help and again I am pointed to which direction and the
train appears.
I finally get to Penn station and seem I have to wait till 10:14 for my train. 20 min. wait.
I get a seat in waiting room. People see not to know anything. Its just over an hour since the first explosion. How fast things went.
I get on my train its packed full and I am still shaking and crying a little and someone gives me their seat. I remember many people trying to comfort me and calm me down and the wait to leave. Then the announcement that the train is going out of service and Penn station is being closed we need to evacuate. I cant leave, I want to make that conductor drive this train. I have to go home I am not safe. That voice is screaming in my head again that I am not safe here and to go home. I cant get home.

The other passengers get me off the train and up the stairs but I cant go any longer the
train staff come over and bring me to the police where I sat and keep begging to go home.
Its in here I find out more details about what happened I hear the police report that a tower has collapsed. Then the second one. I want to go home and cant. I hear them close the city bridges and road. The dogs that come through I want to pet them and cuddle and hide but I cant move, something tells me they have a job to do. The reports about the tunnels being cleared of bombs. The report of a person in the path tunnels. And then the report that this was false. Every time I hear something more I get upset and just want to go home. I cant stop crying. Another passenger having a health problems try's to calm me down and helps me call and finally reach Carol. I talk with her she has gotten my earlier message and has called my family. They know I am alive and okay?? I tell her I want to go home. I am not safe here I am trapped in the city Its closed off. She says something and I calm down but I cant remember what it was. Soon I hear that they are going to open the trains again. The police officer on duty asks where I live and find's out what track my train is on. I am lucky its the first train called and they escorted me to the train. I sit and watch the train fill so slowly as they let people back into the station.
Hurry we have to leave. We leave and I start to calm down and despite the packed train and the conversation someone plays a radio and says there are more down planes and many unaccounted planes. The rumors and stuff is terrifying. I start to panic but fight it I am going home and I will be safe there. I want to yell at these people to stop talking about
it to stop they don't know what I have just been through.

We get to Jamaica and the station is packed and people still try to get on a packed train.
It feels like they are going to push the train over trying to get on. why did we stop here?

Finally we get moving each station we pass brings me close to home. I manage to call carol again and tell her I am on a train home and should be home by 3PM. I ask her to have her father to come get me in Bethpage. I am thinking she has to stay at work till 4:30 and cant leave. I am not in any shape to drive.
Finally I am in Bethpage and I manage to walk off the train, I finally have stopped crying
I see carol and then her dad. I am glad to be home. We do go and get my car. I am calmer now but I need to bring my car home. I get home I then start to find out what happened. despite the good advice I need to watch to verify that what I just went through happened that I am not crazy, this isn't a dream. the feelings that have come are too much I cant describe

My journal entry end there I don't write again for a few days mostly about the odd things
that happened, the people always there when I needed the help and guidance.

This is my view of what happened to me on September 11, 2002. I survived

<text> I was at home watching A&E on cable TV until I had to go to work at Wegmans. I didn't know about what had happened until I got to work at about noon, and a co-worker told me. I was very surprised that there was not some announcement on the regular cable channels like A&E.
The events of that day were all that everyone was talking about and the news coverage was on the TV in the break room and the one in the managers office all day.
The day after I received a phone call from my son telling me that a young man, Shannon Adams, that had graduated with my other son was in the office that was struck by the first plane. When I called my older son to see if he had heard about Shannon, he said that he had, and he couldn't believe that out of a graduating class of 34 one of his classmates had been there.
There was a memorial service held for Shannon held in his home town of Star Lake, NY that was attended by almost 800 people. I was unable to attend but both of my sons were able to. My oldest son, who was in Shannon's class, made the 3 hour trip from his home in Saratoga Springs for the service and drove home the same night so he would not miss work the next day.
I remember watching Shannon play on the school baseball team with my boys. He was a fine young man and will be missed by all of us who had the good fortune to have known him.</text>

<text>My alarm went off at 7:00 am (Mountain Time) - I was not working at the time and wanted to hit the Snooze...but I heard the announcer on the radio say something about the World Trade Center being on fire! I sprang out of bed and ran to the family room and turned on Fox News....I could not believe my eyes - The World Trade Center was a blaze and a plane was heading straight into the other Tower!

I called my daughter in Phoenix as she travels a great deal...she was still at home - Thank God - I then called my Sister in Minneapolis who was at work....she was crying and said everyone in the office was gathered round the T.V. in disbelief - I then called my Mother in Minneapolis - she compared this to the bombing of Pearl Harbor (only worse) I then called my Father & Stepmother who were eating breakfast and had not turned on the T.V. or radio - after calling my other Daugher and Son...I fell to the floor on my knees as I watched people running from the collapsing building and those that were jumping from the windows...I started to cry and pray as I have never prayed before.

Note: Because it was "Live" T.V. the camera caught the horrific sights of people dangling and jumping from the buildings - -fortunately, they were not broadcast again.

I still cannot describe the feelings that came over me...fear...anger....sadness and most of all (if there is such a feeling) of being surreal. I could not believe what my eyes were seeing on Live T.V. - this could not happen in the United States....it happens somewhere else in the world....I knew from this moment on....LIFE as we had known it would NEVER EVER be the same...that night of 9/11 I went to church, cryed through the entire service along with everyone else and have kept the victums of 9/11 in my daily prayers since.

The following night neighbors gathered near my Father's house neath a beautiful moonlit Tucson night - we all held candels receited the Pledge of Allegiance and sang America The Beautiful...after which we talked about our feelings - we were all feeling the same things - we hugged each other, said goodnight and quietly went back to our homes - I had never before felt such a feeling of closeness and love toward my neighbor.

I sat down at the piano on the following Saturday and wrote a very haunting melody which I played over and over for the next few months....I just did not want to let go of the grieving I was feeling for the fallen victums and hero's of that fateful day.....then I got mad and would NOT play it....the other night I played that song very softly.

My parents lived through World War II.....I lived through Viet Nam and my children have lived through 9/11....we are still strong and loving people..."...and the beat goes on!"

<text>Just before the first plane hit the towers I was reading an email my Submariner son had sent earlier in the morning from where he was stationed in Groton,Ct. He said," Mom, I will be on my way home this morning by about 6:30 am. I will be leaving out of Logan Airport. Then the planes hit the towers and the Pentagon and subsequent information indicating at least two of the planes were from Logan Airport.I tried repeatedly to contact my son via phone and email and passenger status, then Red Cross. By noon I had picked up our two younger children from school and relayed my inability to my husband to locate our son.
Appearantly, he had been unable to locate the base commander for his signature in time to catch his flight then the base went into lockdown and all subs sent out to sea. He was reordered to base watch command and was at his post for a several hours but around 4:30pm Mtn time, he called to say he was ok. I was so relieved and Thanked God that while I know he would have been as heroic as those on flight 93 without hesitation. I was greatful he missed his flight. And, I grieve for the other moms who lost their loved ones.</text>

<text>having grown up in new jersey, with the new york skyline in my window everyday, i felt heartbroken at the sights.
my eight year old son was at school that day, with a fever. so when they called to pick him up, i went right over. to my surprise, he started to cry when we got into my van. when i asked him what was the matter, he just asked if my dad or my brother were working in new york that morning,"be-cause some really bad things were happening over there."
it broke my heart even more.
my dad and brother are telephone guys, and also volunteer firemen in new jersey. this hurt them both to the core. my brother called me later that day to see if we were ok, and he just felt the need to go over. at that time they weren't letting any one in still. he was able to let me know that while he never got over to help, they guys were able to get to ellis island. unfortunatly, they weren't needed. there were no injured to be brought that far. they had all perished. they later were able to work at the dump, going through debris. not much, but it was what they needed to do.
i later came to learn of three people that i have known in my life had died that day.
father judge was a priest at my parish in new jersey before working in new york, st. joe's, east rutherford.
steven strobert was a neighbor of my husbands from secaucus, nj.
and micheal tanner was the husband of my old boss, also from secaucus.
on this 9/11, i was drawn to the tv to hear those three names read. i was only able to hear two. steven and micheal. as i turned off the tv, i grabbed my 19 month old boy, and went to church. i sat and lite three candles and said three prayers. one for each who i had known.
for those that knew more, or lost there own, my love and prayers are for you also. </text>

<text>I had pulled into our office building parking lot when I heard the news that a plane had hit the World Trade center tower. At first I thought how could anyone miss this tower?! As I rode up the elevator and pondered on the news event I had just heard, I realized something was very wrong with that statement. You just do not accidentally miss a skyscraper today, maybe in earlier times of aviation this is possible, but, not today!!
I ran from the elevator, opened our office and ran to our lunch room and turned on the television. There is was, the tower in flames. I had opened the office before the staff arrived that day, as I had done for the past two years, so as always I was alone glued to the set feeling so much more alone than ever. Then it happened right before my eyes!! A second plane hit the second tower! It looked like an action movie, but it was real. Then came one of the worst sights I had ever seen in my life. Both towers collapsed. I felt sick and screamed because before my eyes, I knew that thousands of people were crushed to death, their bodies melted right into the metal and debris of the fragmented buildings. I dropped to my knees, I cryed and prayed to the Lord to help us all.
Now every morning I drive to work and pray that I return home safely, because, on September 11, 2001 so many left for work that morning to never return home.
   GOD BLESS AMERICA</text>

<text>On Sept.11,2002, I was at work in a tool shop, and I heard the first report through my radio headphones. I, as most, thought it was an accident, but after the second plane hit we all knew we had been attacked. Being attacked was not surprising, as I knew we would be someday. I just didn't know when or where. Soon jets would roar overhead patrolling the no-fly zone for nearby Camp David. The most impressive point about this day was the courage of the passengers on Flight 93. The most disheartening point was the failure of our government to prevent this. Clinton's incompentence certainly contributed to this attack. What really enraged me was the fact that pilots are not allowed to be armed. What a difference that could have made. The sad part is our leaders have learned little from this. Although we should have armed pilots soon, the idiots in Wash. are still pushing for more aliens and open borders. We will be attacked again.</text>

<text>It was just a beautiful, otherwise ordinary day. I was going about my day first taking my mom to the doctor's.
I had my cell phone on. My daughter-in-law called and asked me if I knew what was going on. I had not turned the TV on that morning. I was listening to the radio, but at that time, there was no mention of anything out of the ordinary.
I was in shock! How could this be happening? Was it an accident? Those poor people!
As the morning wore on, the second plane hit the second WTC tower. A plane was down in Pennsylvania! Had everyone gone crazy? Who could do such a thing to us? What twisted kind of a person could even imagine such destruction upon another person?
When I could view it on the TV I just sat and cried. How can someone hate people so whom they have never met?
I pray for those men and women who have lost a loved one in that act of hate. I have a renewed appreciation for the Flag, the firemen, polieceman, and rescue squads. God Bless them all!</text>

<text>In the afternoon (european time) i sit in my car and heard radio. The german reporters are talking about a little plane like a cesna was crashed in one of the towers. In this moment i didn?t thought about the terrible things they happened really in New York.
A few minutes later i came back in the office. My boss is the only one who had television in his office, so all the people who worked with me, are sitting in front of tv and they are looking with big eyes on it. I said: hey guys, what?s happened. Than i saw the twin towers burning. At this time everyone was sure: It?s a terrorist attack !!!

Today, one year later when i think about it, it?s like it happened 5 minutes before. Everytime i see the pictures. Pictures of fire.

I feel with all - i feel with america !

Greetings from Germany !
