Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was driving to work as normal, taking university drive down into Hollywood, FL. The news came across the radio on the Howard Stern show (who doesnt want to laugh in the morning?)... I nearly crashed my car. Ft Lauderdale as my location is deceptive, I am a New Jersey native, my entire family lives in northern New Jersey. I pulled into Whole Foods market in Plantation, FL in near shock. At this point only one plane had struck so I was unaware of the totality of what was going on. As usual I got my coffee and informed the cashier that the tower had been hit, they had not heard yet. I got back in my car and actually left the coffee on the roof as I drove away (something I remembered later). I suppose I was in a state of semi-shock. Then I heard the news of the second hit and the realization that we were under attack. Immediately I tried to raise my family on my cell phone to no avail. As of right now all I knew was: -My brother had been working in the basement of the towers for a few months for a telecommunications company. He is the type of person who would run into a burning building (he performed CPR on a dying man at Costco once a few years earlier, it was just his nature) -My mother works for the state of NJ and therefore works in a building that could be a target. -Friends and family live and work in NY Panic. I could not reach anyone. I made it to work in one piece only to be glued to my computer watching what was going on. One collapse... then two... The only contact I had with my family was my cousin who was in an apartment overlooking central park.. she was scared. I finally was able to reach my family at about 2pm. My brother was transferred from that project the friday before. My cousin's husband ran 30 blocks home after being in the shadow of the buildings during the attack. Friends I knew happened to not go to work that day... and some did... My family was untouched. But 2 of my high school friends were not so lucky. I had lost touch with them but they were regular people who I grew up with, played ball with etc. My age, dead for no reason beyond unreasonable hate. I learned later of the stories of friends searching the hospitals for weeks.. I can only ponder the horror I was spared in my family. Recently streets in my hometown were renamed in their honor. My seventh grade science teacher at the Marlboro Middle School came in and solemnly informed us that two planes had crashed into the World Trade Centers, one into the Pentagon, and one in Pennsylvania. My teacher explained in detail what had happened earlier that morning. He answered all of our questions, so we understood everything. We ended up talking the whole forty-two minute period about the hijacked planes and their final destinations. I didn't realize, at first, how big of an event this was. I had never heard of the Pentagon, and planes crashed all the time. It wasn't until I got home and saw the news that I started to realize something HUGE had happened. All TV and radio stations were broadcasting the news. Hebrew school was cancelled, and I didn't go to soccer practice. I was home, watching pictures and videos of the horrific images and people's reactions. At school the next day, and for days after, the American flag flew at half-mast. We had moments of silence for the victims and their families. Throughout the year, I have read numerous stories by people who were personally affected by it. One story was about a girl when, a few years ago, was saved from cancer by a bone marrow transplant. Her donor was a New York firefighter. A couple years and two visits later, he was killed at Ground Zero. Another was about a man who had dedicated the last year to rebuilding the Pentagon, where his son worked and died. I have also heard stories about people who got phone calls from their spouses, telling them that they loved them. They later died trying to take control of the plane. All these stories, pictures, and scenes have touched my life forever. September 11th has changed my life in many ways. One lesson I have learned is that the worst can sometimes bring out the best in people. The actions of the terrorists brought out American spirit. Proof of that can be seen on cars, houses, and buildings. the American flag can be seen everywhere. The leadership roles taken by the passengers on Flight 93, is also a great example of patriotism. September 11th has also taught me that life goes on, no matter what. My cousin was born on that fateful day and the horror of his birthday hasn't affected his childhood. He constantly reminds me that we should not dwell on the bad. It is very important to remember and honor the bad things, but it is also important to rejoice in the good. In the years to come, when students like me study September 11th, as we study the Battle at Gettysburg today, there are some things I want people to remember. I want them to remember the heroic acts of Flight 93. I want people to remember the enormous amount of innocent civilians killed. I want them to remember the stories of people personally affected. I want them to remember the patriotism caused by that fateful morning of Tuesday, September 11, 2OO2. Some of the kids left my English class because over the loud speaker the principal said that if any kids in the school have parents that work in the World Trade Center please come to the office. My teachers were talking about what happened and then they started crying in front of all of us. For the rest of the day every body was in a bad mood or was crying. When I got home I put on the news and every channel was about the World Trade Center getting bombed. This terrible happening dominated our lives for the next 8 months on TV, Radio and newspaper. It seemed like we just couldn?t stop talking about it there were about 5,000 people that day in the World Trade Center. Approximately 2,800 people died of the 5,000. In the Pentagon in Washington D.C. 1,125 people working that day. That?s a lot of lives lost. I think this happen because we were too relaxed about security in our country. We though we are a superior country and that it could never happen here. We need to stop people from coming into our country and watch our own backs. We don?t know who are the terrorists here and who are not, so it can happen again. They are talking about rebuilding the World Trade Center on the same site, but I don?t think should do that on the same site because it?s a memorial spot or like a grove. New York has lots and a lot of money from 9/11 and some has the federal government. Hopefully everything will get back to normal but in some ways living locking over you shoulder. Our men and women of the army are in Afghanistan defending us, it?s a shame because they have to this because of one creep. I hope wear ever he is he is suffering or is dead. Coming this Wednesday 9/11/02 is the one-year anniversary of this terrible tragedy. There will be a lot of memorial services all over the country and sadness and I hope there will be nothing bad happen ever again. I am originally from Phila Pa and can tell you that being away from my family during this time was the worst time of my life. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. We were sent home from work in the early am, in time enough due to the hour difference, to see the second plane hit the tower. I sat mesmerized in front of the tv all day and into the night. I never made it to work the next day because I was too upset. I didn't even know anyone who was touched by this tradgedy and couldn't even begin to walk in the shoes of those who had loved ones affected by 9-11. My 9th wedding anniversary was the 12th but who could think of celebrating anything after this event. I was due to fly home on the 15th and back out to Milwaukee again on the 18th but was terrified of getting on a plane. My husband ended up driving out for a week to calm me down and I finally ended up flying home two weeks later. Even today well over a year later I still remember those events like it was yesterday. Something always reminds me of 9-11, whether its a glance at office buildings or just watching people on thier way to work, even a ride in an office elevator makes me wonder what people in the trade center were thinking when all hell broke loose. I think everday as I go about my daily routine that these people were doing the same thing and this could have happened in any major US city. I'll never forget the footage of people jumping out of the towers and images of people posting pictures of the loved one around New York city. These memories will remain with me forever. So many people died, but yet so many were saved. This will forever be a mark on history. My generation will live with the memories for all of our days. 9/11 was a tragic day, but at the same time brought America together like never before. Like many people in the world I too was affected. But I wasn?t directly affected, fortunately I didn?t know anyone who personally affected, or was killed. September Eleventh brought up a lot in me. It made me sad, for all the people that died in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, Somerset County and the ones and the plane that went through so much. I was also angered at the people that did this, the terrorists. All these emotions whirling at once were something I had never felt before that day. Many people I know, family and friends were also affected. However, like me, they were not directly affected; they were hurt but didn?t know someone who died. Many people around me were saddened, angry and many feelings that weren?t so good. The world was shocked; nothing in my lifetime had been like this. Unlike some wars, this attack was out of no where to the normal citizen. I feel that my generation will be forever changed by the events of 9/11, people will always remember where they were when news broke, they will always remember the horrific scenes, but I hope that people remember the people that risked their lives to save others, those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in order to spare many. We should always remember the unity of America after 9/11 the surge of patriotism, the feeling of being proud for being an American. With so much happening in the last year, horrific events, military actions, the surge of emotions and patriotism, I feel that 9/11 was a horrific day that brought about so much, the good and the bad. The world is forever changed by these days, my generation and any other person who witnessed and understood what had happened will never forget the bravery of the people, the sights and memories, and most importantly the changing of America. I had heard about the crash before I left but did not really see what was happening until I got home. I had gotten home and went to lay down and turned on the tv and saw the horror. The first plane had crashed then we saw the second. My husband was home as were my parents with us. We just watched in awe. My husband had left the room when the towers had began to fall. I yelled for my husband to come back to the room and we watched as the towers fell to the ground. I remember that they kept showing it over and over. We heard about the other two crashes and it was just like something you might see or hear from a movie. We watched tv all day because I feel we as well as others were waiting for more. We did not know how much more they were going to do. The next few nights were very tense as we live by an airport and at night there were several planes that were flying very low and it would wake us up and cause us to look out just to make sure everything is ok. This has built a bigger faith in me and my family. We are already christians but sometimes we loose sight of the fact that God does exist in this world and even though it was Saten's work of what happened that day, it is God who will see us through if we have a dedicated faith in him. September 11, 2002 was a pretty quiet day for us but I believe everyone is on their own alert and feeling a little tense this week but we will see this though!! I remember sitting in my 8th social studies class right before the bell rang. The very moment that I was struck with the worst case of the butterflies, my friend walked in and said? a plane just crashed into the pentagon." A second later, there was an announcement that TWO planes had hit the two world trade centers. Thinking about all the possibilities of what could have happened, I couldn?t come up with a logical explanation. Finally after class, I snuck out of my homeroom and ran down the hall with all of my friends to the nearest TV. There I saw people crying, and people standing there in shock and confusion. I looked on the TV, and all I could see were these two buildings that at the time I didn?t even know very much about, yet, as I stood there, were making the biggest change in a America at the time. I looked to my left and saw a senior crying, and said that her mom should have been on one of those planes, at that moment I knew this was not a mistake... I didn?t realize what kind of impact the September 11th tragedy could have on my life until today. There was other staff sitting around watching the TV so we stopped to see what was happening. We had heard rumors before that, but seeing it on TV, we still didnt believe what was happening. I was overcome with emotion when I saw the news. I was very sad and very nervous about what was going on in New York. I left work to go pick up my 9 year old son so I could be close to him, than I went home to be with my husband. We watched the news the whole day and could not believe what we were seeing. Life will never be the same for all of us, especially for the familes who lost loved ones. Life as we knew it will never be the same because of a senceless act. I stayed home the next day as I was too upset to go to work and I kept my son home from school. My husband also stayed home, and we all stayed together and made sure we let each other know how much we loved each other as you never know what will happen. On September 11, 2001 that evening I found out that I was pregnant, I guess the saying is true when one life ends another starts. I will let my 3 month old son know exactly what went on the day of 9/11/01. I want to let all the familes of 9/11/01 know that my heart goes out to them and that there family members they lost are my HERO"S. He works for Public Radio, so he has all the updated information. He called back a little later to let me know that it was not an accident, but a terrorist group. What touched me the most was the following day when one of my co-worker's came in crying. She is Phillipino...does not look Arabic, Pakastani, etc., but the fact that she was not WHITE was reason enough for a group of fellow workers to not get on the elevator with her. They all got off, no one would ride with her. How sad for us as Americans (she also was born in America and is an American citizen); how sad for the World; how sad for the human race... Tell us your story: I received a phone call when the first tower was hit...and I turned on T.V. and it was like watching some unbelieveable movie...yet it was real. I just watched in horror wondering if there were going to be some hits somewhere else? The bravery of the firemen and policemen as beyond measure on this infamous day of 9/11/01. Many people lost their loved ones that day, but they will contiue to live on with hope of seeing them again in the end. Not only the saddess took place that day but their were also many miracles such as the people getting out of the building and the people that stopped the 4th plane from crashing into a building. Them people saved many other peoples lives. They are heroes. Many people were scared that day of what will happen in the years to come but we will stand together as a nation and be strong because we have God on our side. There were other feelings than just sadness that day. There were many people who felt very mad and were ready to fight back. This day should be a day of remembrance, a day to look back on what happened and recognize all the people that died, their loved ones, Firefighters and Police Men, all the people out there fighting for America right now and everyone in the United States. Tell us your story: I was on my way to drop my son off at the babysitters, when i had gotten there i saw the the first plane hit the World Trade Center in NY on her T.V. I remember thinking what a terrible accident! I got back in my car and headed off to work, the radio stations had stopped playing music and were all talking about what had happened! Then I hear the second building had been hit, I immediately called my boss who was still at home and asked her if she had spoken with her husband who works in NY she had and he was fine. We got off the phone and I immediately called my grandmother in Dallas, TX. We talked the whole ride into work when all of a sudden I hear the Pentagon had been hit, I was on the Key Bridge in Washington, D.C. I looked back and saw an explosion and lots of black smoke coming from the Pentagon. At that moment my phone had cut off and I lost contact with my grandmother. I remember looking around at all the people on the bridge and seeing everyone crying and looking around scared not knowing what to do. At that moment the radio stations were telling everyone that more planes were headed towards DC. I went on ahead to work(Georgetown) crying my eyes out not knowing if where they were going to hit next and when I got there the phones were ringing off the hook of family of myself and coworkers wondering if we were all ok. I remember the tone of voice grandma had when I called her back from work. She sounded so Happy and relieved that I was ok. My cell phone was dead for the next couple of days so i couldn't calls all that day. I don't think I would have believed it was all so real if I had not have seen it myself. After that day whenever an airplane would go by in the Washington area, everyone would kinda pause and look up to make sure it wasn't coming down. I can't remember a day when I cried so much for the people at the Pentagon and all the people in New York who had died such a painful and unthinkable death. I thanked God for September 12th. I walked back in the office to make some copies and was stopped by some of my coworkers talking about the first plane hitting the World Trade Center. We were frantically trying to find a radio, TV, or something on the internet. One of the guy's wives had called to tell us what had happened. While we were searching for something to listen to what was going on, our boss came out of his office. His wife had just called and told him a second plane hit the second tower. The phones just about stopped ringing in our office. We found a TV and turned it on. Immediately, everyone in the office was around it. Some were crying. But it was just astonishment for the most part. Shortly after we turned on the television, the started to broadcast that the Pentegon had been struck and they were trying to get someone there to cover it. They started talking about a fourth plane that was lost. Other small bombs were going off all over, but it was not known at that time if they were hoaxes or real. All of the memories are so clear, but are all mangled together. The first tower fell. No one could believe what they were seeing. How could these massive structures come down like that? One of our coworkers had just been to NYC that previous weekend and had visited the towers. His brother lived and worked not far from there. He was frantically trying to get ahold of him, but the phone lines were all jammed. We tried to go on with the day, but we kept coming back to the TV. The second tower came down. All those people! We were all numb. We felt helpless. They had found the plane, crashed, in Pennsylvania. One of our sales people lived not far from the crash site. He was in Detroit at the time, but his wife was home. We were all worried. She was fine but could see the smoke from the house. The president was stunned and said a few words before taking off in AirForce One. In my heart, I felt that we needed to hear from him often. His words were the only thing that was going to comfort our Nation. And he did a fantastic job throughout the coming days. About lunch time, I went out. I needed some space. I listened to the radio. I drove around. I cried for the first time. All of our schools were in lock-down and would only release the students to their parents. Many parents ran to the schools and took thier children home. We all felt we needed to be close to our families. I wanted to be with mine, but I had to continue with the day. Our Nation Guard went on lockdown with guarded posts at the entrances. Still to this day, there are barracades around the building and an armed guard at the entrance. Lansing is the home to Bioport, the only company that produces the Anthrax vaccine. We were worried about a possible strike there. Many companies closed their doors for the day. We continued to go on. My husband called after lunch. He wanted to make sure we were okay. My heart ached for everyone at Ground Zero. After work, I held my son tight. I cried. We watched the TV endlessly. It was everywhere. Every channel. You didn't know where to look. Everyone had something different on. As the days and weeks passed, things slowly retuned to normal. Flags were swiped off shelves as soon as they were put out. Every house had something. The nation came together. The crime rate dropped. It's sad that it takes something like this to make the ciminals stop. The nation was in mourning. Every night we watched the TV hoping that someone would be found alive. The death toll grew. The nation was still coming together, months later. We had a little hope when they found some people alive, but that was the end of it. When I heard that they were looking for DNA to match to body parts, I knew it was worse that I could have ever imagined. My best friend's dad, a local volunteer fire fighter, went out to help in the days after the accident. When he came home, he said that everything was crushed, pulverized. There were no desks, chairs, telephones or computers. Everything was dust. He was devistated, but bonded to everyone down there. Over the passed few months, the follow up reports have been coming out. I have been watching them with great interest. I feel it's the only way I can bond with the people at all of the sites of terror. I want so badly to capture and destroy Osama Bin Laden, and I have never wanted that for anyone - ever! Although, I feel that even if he is killed, it will not stop the torrorism. I have since had a second child. I fear more for my children that I do for anything else. I had them in hopes of joy and happiness in their lives. Now I fear that the joy I had hoped for will be turned into fear. I don't want them to have to always be on alert for a suicide bomber or fear every time they get on an air plane that something will happen. I am angry that the Nation will always have those fears now. Although we have become stronger, we have also become afraid and vulnerable. Time will never heal what has happened. Nothing can take that away from us. I attended a memorial service in the small town where I live with my two boys this morning. It was moving. The police and fire fighters all had the black bands around their badges. There was a gun salute and taps. I cried again for the aching nation. My oldest son doesn't understand. He was only 2 when everything happened. He knows that airplanes hit some buildings and hurt a lot of people and that it makes mommy sad. I am trying to preserve the history for him. Once he is in high school and in history class, the books won't be able to tell him what happened. I know my history books didn't do a good job of telling me anything about the vietnam war. Once I got older and started talking to people who had been there or lived through it, there was no comparison to anything I learned in a book. I want my boys to be able to come to me, and look through a scrap book and watch the video tape of the news coverage as it happened. I love America. She has been injured - an injury that will never heal. I pray that she will be able to watch over us now, and our future generations, and keep us strong and safe. I pray that those who have such hatred against us will get their justice. I pray that my family and friends and I will not die at the hads of a terrorist.
