Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I worked on the 25th floor of the WTC Tower One in 1999 for a bond broker. In the summmer of 2000 i took my old job back at Merrill Lynch across the street while a lot of my coworkers took jobs at Cantor Fitzgerald. I remember all my coworkers saying you can make more money at Cantor why are you going back to Merrill. I went back because I like the working environment at Merrill and I was close to my old boss, Tom Sasso. Tom was a good neighborhood guy from Brooklyn and grew up a lot like i did in Jersey City, NJ. That decision saved my life, who would have thought. I got off the ferry from Jersey City on 09/11/01 and heard a loud explosion and then the fireball. Since I came in from the Jersey side I didn't see the plane, just the explosion. Then what looked like snow almost coming down in droves, it was actually all the paper and glass and other things. As i got closer to Merrill building in the WFC debris was falling all around, body parts, plane parts, everything. I bolted into the Merrill building for cover and went up to my office. As we were talking about the explosion and what happened we watched in horror as the second plane came in. After that plane hit we knew it was an attack. Me and Tom were the last guys to leave the floor after telling everyone to get out. Once outside we hung around and couldn't believe what we were seeing. People were diving to their deaths, some holding hands others just leaping. It was the worst thing someone can watch, you felt so hopeless not being able to help. I was a cop for a short period of time and US Navy Reserves six years and for me not being able to help will haunt me the rest of my life. I managed to get one of the last ferries out of NYC before the towers fell. I was walking from the ferry to my car when the first one went down, it will be in head for the rest of my life. Not one day goes by when i don't think about it. I bolted home, checked on grandfather, pounded a bottle of scotch and went down to the waterfront to volunteer. The JCPD and JCFD were all their waiting to go over and help. I helped load ferries full of food and water and helped people off the ferry that were hurt. I went over to NYC to help in the rescue attempt but I didn't save or find anyone alive. As time went on and I started to find out who didn't make out i became very angry and depressed. I went to 22 funerals and wakes over the months and hated life. I got into a battle with a street gang in my niehgborhood that came over from NYC that was causing havoc on the block. They would run on my roof every night so i couldn't sleep and follow all over town. This is while i was going back to the WTC site and at work at Merrill. We move back to the old building one month after the attacks. One week after the attacks Merrill Lynch aske if I would retrieve important information from the WFC and i did. It took me 14 hours but the firm needed to get back on it's feet. I always liked Merrill Lynch and what they stood for. As time went on the gang continued to harasss me and i put my house up for sale and moved down the shore and commuted into NYC. Eventually i couldn't sell the house and lost it to foreclosure but not before running up credit card bills to pay for the mtge and living down the shore. I don't know what was worse sometimes, being in 09/11 and burying 22 buddies or battling this street gang. As time went on things got back to normal for me minus my house and credit rating, things that shouldn't have happened to me. Let's just say the three years after 09/11 have been three years i would like to forget ever happened. Maybe one day years from now i will be back on my feet and can hold my head high. For i battled evil in 09/11 and afterwards and will continue to do so. Evil shall never overcome good, it can't. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I moved my belongins to my new home on Sep.1st, but I stayed at my mom's house for a week with my family before moving in. That time I was pregant with my second child. On Sep. 11 2001 I was cleaning the leaving room when my husband called me on the phone and told me that a place had hit the WWC. I could not believe. I had this bad feeling that there was going to be more tragety. MY cable was going to be connected the following 2 days. So I used the radio. When I heard them saying that the towers were collapsing and the planes hitted Pent. and Pen. I was in shock and crying. I did't had love ones in those trageties, but I felt sad and misery. I felt as if I had loved ones there even know I don't. I was born in Brazil, but I have this nation as my own. A Pastor that visited a Brazilian church that I was going to, said that he knew some of the Brazilian people that died in Sep 11. In fact those people that he knew were from a Assembly of God. I felt deeply sad and my sympathy goes to all the families that lost loved ones. To conclude, I hope that from this tragety the people from this nation not only Americans, trust and deeply believe in God. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am an American Christian woman. The morning of September 11th, 2001 I was home alone preparing to leave for work. My husband, a Palestinian from Jordan, and a Muslim, had gone to Amman, Jordan to visit his children. He was due to fly home on the 17th, the following Monday. As I dressed, I was in a Paltalk room on the internet where my husband spends a lot of time chatting with other Arab friends about the situation in Palestine. Most of the conversation is in Arabic, but I felt somehow closer to my husband being in that room. hearing the voices and knowing that there were friends of his there. Suddenly someone typed in text, "A plane has hit the World Trade Center building!" and I ran to the television to see the news for myself. I watched over and over again the horrible scenes being replayed on the news there. I was in shock. And somehow I was getting the sense that this had something to do with some Arab people. Could it be the Palestinians, retaliating for what the USA is doing to support and fund Israel's cruelty to their people in the homeland? That was my first thought. And I longed to be with my husband more than anything else, to have him home safe with me. But then I wondered, as strange as the thought was, if he was safer where he was in a Middle Eastern country than he would be here in the USA with me. The danger for the first time in my life seemed to be here. I rushed to work and no one there in the store seemed to be aware of what had occurred. When I told them they immediately turned on a display television and we all watched in agony what was happening in New York City and other parts of the East Coast. I paced back and forth. Tears were in my eyes. I needed to talk with my husband. One of the managers saw how visibly distraught I was and said I was free to go home. I arrived at the house and immediately turned on the internet and searched for some way to contact my husband. I thanked God when I saw a Palestinian friend online, a young man in Irbid, Jordan. I asked him if he would please call my husband for me and tell him I needed him to contact me. He left the internet cafe where he was on the computer and called my husband and came back to tell me that my husband would come online shortly to speak with me. By the time I spoke with my husband the news of our tragedy here in the USA had reached around the world. He and all those he knew there were appalled by what had been done to the Americans. He was beside himself, and all he wanted was to come home. During the week between then and the day he was to return to the USA, he barely ate, lost interest in all activities he had planned with his children, shopping for things to bring home, etc. And then we began to worry. We heard that no international flights were being allowed to fly into our airports. We feared that the flights from the Middle Eastern countries, with the speculation of the perpetrators of the attack being from that area, would be even more under suspicion. It was time to pray. I knew a Jewish Christian woman online who I had met there because of her support and sympathy for the plight of the Palestinians. She belonged to several pray groups online and when we spoke online she said that there would be thousands of people praying for my husband's safe return. My church posted prayer requests concerning September 11th on a bulletin board and among them was my request for prayer for my husband's safe return. Friends and family prayed as well. My husband would have been gone 17 days that coming Monday when he was due to fly back to Chicago, an unbearable amount of time to be without him for me. But by Saturday still no flights had been allowed into our airports from abroad and by Sunday only two, one from Paris and one from London. But still we prayed and had hope. Late Sunday night, my husband received a call from Air Jordanian. His flight was to be the first that would be allowed into the USA from Jordan! Thank you, Lord! We worried that things might be difficult either in Shannon Airport where he would change planes and face US immigration or on arrival here at O'Hare airport in Chicago. He was expecting to see the military pointing rifles at the Arabs on arrival. In Shannon, when the US immigration official looked at his passport, he took my husband to their office. My husband thought for sure they had found some reason to send him back to Jordan on the next flight. But people were still praying. And God answers prayer. The immigration official said there was a problem with his travel permission. His heart sank. The official continued, explaining that he was qualified for more time than had been initially granted him and that he (the official) would correct that so that my husband would have that additional time added to his travel document. What a relief! Instead of a problem, it was a blessing. Hours later, at O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, a very anxious wife was waiting for her husband to return. I had heard nothing from him since he told me that he was told his flight would leave Amman on schedule. I waited and waited, watching face after face come out of the gate area. Then I turned and saw the most beautiful sight, my husband's smiling face and open arms. God had brought him home to me! Since that day, life has changed for us because of some close-minded, misguided people who did the unthinkable. My husband works for a government nuclear laboratory. He is very educated and had been assured that he would soon be able to move up into a job there for which he is more qualified. But after September 11th, those positions are suddenly restricted to American citizens only. He is the same person, with the same qualifications and abilities that he was one year ago, but doors have been closed in his face. Friends at work have jokingly called him "Bin Laden" and if they see him looking more serious and pensive than usual they have said, "Are you planning a terrorist attack?" with a laugh. He knows they are just kidding. they are good friends. But it is an uncomfortable situation he has been thrown into out of no fault of his own. Other Arabs here in the USA, also being the same people they were before September 11th, have been verbally and physically attacked, or worse. One thing I know for sure. If we are to let what happened that morning one year ago make us more close-minded, more segregated, more prejudicial, then THEY will have won a tremendous victory in the hearts of the American people. Don't let it happen. Let America continue to be a place where all are welcome. where all the "tired, the poor, the huddled masses" can come to find the freedom for which they yearn. And remember, unless you are a Native American, this is only your country because someone gave someone in your family past, be it ten years ago, or one hundred, a welcome place to call home, where they were free to pursue the freedoms and hopes and basic human rights that they could only dream of in their homeland. For some reason, I had awaken with a heavy heart and a strange feeling deep in my gut. I dropped my son off at school and made my way to work at the Public Safety Building. When I arrived, the Chief of Police, Captains, officers as well as office personnel were gathered in the briefing room watching what appeared to me to be a horrible scene from a training video or even a horror movie. As I approached and asked what was going on, and the look on their faces told me that this was not what I thought that it was. The Chief looked at me and explained what had happened and that this was taking place as we watched. I stood there in shock as I watched the 2nd plane hit, and watched as the towers started to go down. I knew what I was watching was real but I could not find the rationalization as to "why"? I asked myself over and over again, how can America and Americans be hated so much. Our agency was put on alert and all precautions were put into place. I know that we are far from New York and the Pentagon, but I have come to realize that we can never let our guard down as a Nation ever again. 9/11 should have been a wake up call for all Nations. I mourn for those lost and their families, for those who are ill from inhaling the dust at ground zero, but above all I mourn for those lives that have been lost since this war on terrorism began. I see everyday since that day as a day to live to live each day to the fullest. I was in Washington Irving Middle School in my technology class when Mr. Powell, the shop teacher, told my teacher the there were attacks on the twin towers and the pentagon. I couldn?t hear what Mr. Powell said to my teacher but I saw an expression of distress on his face. Many of my fellow students and I asked what was wrong. He said that there was a terrorist attack on the towers and the pentagon. After I heard this my mind went blank because my dad works at the pentagon. I didn?t know where exactly the plane had hit and I had no way of knowing if he was alive or not. About 3 minutes later we turn on the T.V. and saw what happened. My class saw images of the twin towers crumbling and people jumping out of buildings trying to escape their inevitable death. I saw when the buildings fell to the ground and saw that area of New York covered in cloud of ash. I tried to call my mom and dad at their work and on their cell phone. There was no answer on either. I went through the whole day of school not paying attention to the teachers but thinking, what if? During the school day I saw many students being taken out of classes and going home. I had no such luxury. I finished the rest of the school day wondering if my dad was okay. Eventually my dad came home and we watched the President?s speech on the attacks. There were lives lost during the attacks of September 11th and I send my condolences to those who have lost loved ones. September 11th will always and forever be a day of remembrance to those who died and those who help fight terrorism to prevent things like this from ever happening again. When I heard the DJ say that the twin towers were hit hit by planes. I thought "What the heck is he talking about! This must be one of their jokes, right?" But then I heard the tone of his voice, he was so serious and quiet. Later, when I was in my first period English class, I saw my teacher leave the radio on. She was quiet and I think she was crying a little. I remember feeling cut off from other people, but for a different reason. I wasn't crying, or feeling sad. I just thought " I feel sorry for the people and their families, but hey!, life goes on" I always felt bad for thinking that and for not feeling any more than I did (I never cried). One year later, on September 11, 2002, my school had an assembly in memory of that day. Tell us your story: On sept 11 2001 I was at work when i received a phone from my mother saying we were being attacked i did not know what to say i hung up with my mother and called my husband at home to get more details as he confirmed what was happening I in returned was telling my co-workers the look on everyones face will be with me the rest of my life, and the feeling that i had inside of me will never go away. All i wanted to do was go home and be with my family. All of us gathered in the front office where the only t.v.in the plant was. Tell us your story: On the morning of September 11 I was sitting in my 3rd grade class, and I heard the principal come over the intercome to tell all of the teachers to lock their doors and ceil their windows. In my mind i was like what is going on then the teacher started telling us what had happened and tears came out of my eyes just to hear about those people lives that were ruined. An hour later everyones parents were at the school checking them out of class and I just went home to watched the news and all of a sudden i see flashing on the sceen attack on the twin towers, I was like i hope this dont happen to us for 2 nights straight i couldnt go to sleep at all. When i got to school the next day over the intercome we had a moment of silence in our classroom to think about the lives lost. This event is the most tragic event ever, since the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Not only did the terrorist kill innocent civilians, but also left a great big scar in New York and Washington as they drove planes straight into the World Trait Center and the Pentagon. A few minutes later, the media aired the whole tragedy as people around the world watched the Pentagon explode, and the twin towers collapse. When this whole thing happened, I sat in my first period class uninformed about what was going on. I began to proceed to my normal schedule and went straight to 4th period. In the middle of class, the principle made an announcement saying we were under terrorist attack. I had no clue what he was talking about because my teacher didn't turn on the television. As I walked into my 5th period class, my teacher was sitting in front of the television with five other students who came to class early. I walked up to see what they were watching and the second i laid my eyes on the T.V, I saw one of the towers collapse. From 5th period on, all of my teachers threw out their lesson plans for the day, and left the news on the whole period. My classmates and I watched the planes crash into the buildings over and over as they replayed the footage many times. I began to worry that another terrorist attack was going to occur any second. The next day I stayed home, still shocked at what happened. September 11, 2001, was a day of infamy. Even a year after the incident, I fear that another attack will soon come. Now that the United States retaliated, our chance of World War III has increased. I turned on the news, and as I watched I saw the second tower explode. How odd I thought, that the 2nd tower would explode when only the 1st was hit. Then someone called NBC and said, "didn't you see the 2nd plane?" They re-played the footage, and then the newscaster said, "Now we know this is not an accident." My first concern was how was I going to get my 8 year old son home from Riverdale Country School? Giuliani closed the city, and how would I get to him? Later in the day i went out to the bank to get as much cash as i could -- we were still unsure if the terrorists had any more plans for us. It was chaotic and confusing. Walking down 3rd Avenue was surreal. Hundreds of people were walking uptown, the streets were closed, not a car in sight. I could feel the confusion and sadness and solemnity in the air. When Giulinai finally opened the city to those who wanted to leave, my hsuband, daughter and i went to Westchester to reunite with my son, who had a wonderful afternoon with my father, swimming and eating chocolate! In the following days we tried to return to some kind of normalcy. But we and the city were forever changed. I had just sent my child of to school and was cleaning around the house I had turned on the tv, I could not believe my eyes. The World Trade Center was on fire. Shortly after I watched in shock as the 2nd plane hit tower 2. Shortly after the phone rang. It was my mother in tears she wanted to make sure I was watching. I was, then yet another shock the Pentagon was hit by a plane also. Then yet on other shock the plane crash in Shanksville PA. This was getting a little to close to home for me and my family. I remember the unthinkable what next. What did we do as American citizens to deserve this. I immediately went to school and pulled my daughter Megan out. All I could do was hold her tight. That day had to be the hardest day for anyone to even grasp the concept of what was going on. My family and I are very grateful to all the men and women who have helped (and/or) lost their lives. I was being called to get up by my mom at around 7:30 a.m. and i took a shower and i got dressed, made a lunch and just followed the regular routine. I had to be at my new school for 8:10 a.m. and then i would be starting my class with Mr. DiSaverio. I got the things i would need for the class and i rushed to class through the crowd. I got to my desk to see the St. Mary's Highschool logo on the anouncement t.v.(as usual)and at about 8:20a.m. the anouncements cam on. After they were done we sat down, the news channel came on (as usual)and my teacher turned the volume down. i looked up at the clock it was 8:49 then i looked up at the t.v. (which everyone tends to ignore except me) and i saw 1 of 2 really tall buildings burning and i was wondering what this was all about so i told another person to turn up the volume and he did. The whole school was watching the "World Trade Center" burn. i did not know what these buildings were at the time and what the point of them being built was or anything all i knew was that lots and people were trapped and that this was BAD. We kept watching CNN and then another plane hit the other tower. everyone freaked out and the teacher told us to be calm. we started to see people jumping from the burning towers and some of the teachers who were in the hall started to cry. The teachers were saying with a false state in there voice that they were sure that the F.D.N.Y. would be up there in no time and that they're going to save all of those people who were trapped and then the first tower collapsed. the principal came on the announcements and said "you are all asked to pray for our united nieghbor because of the terrible tradegy that is taking place" the teachers and people in my class were all wondering if they would be able to save the remaining tower and then all we heard was a roar and the other tower collapsed. my mother's day was cancelled at work because she is a stock trader and financial analyst and i was sent home with the rest of my classmates. this was 9/11 for me. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I went to work as normal and started my day at my desk like usual. Being in the Midwest we were one hour behind New York. At 8:00 my time I notice that the office was really quite. We had about 65 people in the squadron and its pretty noisy in the morning with people coming and going. This morning it was quiet. I got up and started wondering around and saw that all the desks were empty. I headed to the break room and found a lot of people standing around the TV set. I squeezed in the room and saw the first tower burning. I thought that this was an air accident and kept watching. Nobody moved to go back to their desk and just stood watching. Then the second plan came into view and we watched it live hit the second tower. We were absolutely glued to the TV. I went back to my desk and tried to call friends at the Pentagon to see if they knew anything. The number I was calling rang and rang and nobody answered. Someone finally picked up the phone and told me that the office was being evacuated and that the Pentagon had been hit. I rushed back to the break room with the news and people were telling me that this was serious and to stop joking around. Then it came out on TV that the Pentagon had been hit. We slowly started back to our desks but it was a really subdued office. We kept the TV going and every now and then someone would check to see what the latest news was. We were told that only military aircraft were flying. We saw the President make his speech from Barksdale Air Force Base and being a military unit we knew were had gone into a high posture of security readiness then usual. That afternoon while sitting at my desk I head planes roaring overhead. I got up and went out on to our third floor fire escape landing and saw coming down the runway a plane I recognized as Air Force One, the President's plane. People started coming to the windows and we watched all that was happening on the runway which was right across the street. We saw Air Force troops starting to be strategically placed along side the road near the runway. The President's plane circled and pulled up across the street. The first people out were the Secret Service guys in their black over coats and dark glasses. You could tell they were armed and meant business. Then we saaw the President get out and get into a limo and head for the Strategic Command Headquarters Building about a maile away. Later we watched the President give his second talk from the underground command post. Strategic Command is THE command that is the first defense of the United States. Its here that any kind of action would be initiated. Its the control center of all our military forces. I still can remember clearly, 5 years after, where I was, what happened and the rage, horror and sadness that was felt by both military and civilians assigned to Offutt Air Force Base on September 11, 2001. I had spoken to my husband who was in Penn. taking an antiterrorism course for the United States Army. After our usual I love you's and have a good day's, I left our apartment in Fort Hamilton and headed for work. It was a warm sept. morning and the day was progressing as usual. After doing my usual first rounds and checking on my patients and getting report, I proceeded to begin my assessments and administering some medications. One patient who was a federal prisoner had guards posted outside his door. They were listening to ear pieces and talking about the usual things they would talk about. Suddenly one stood up and stated that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. Being born and raised in Maine and newly moved to NY, I was not very familiar with the towers being north or south. In my niave mind I thought it was plausable that a "small" plane could have accidently hit a tower. As further news was obtained that another plane had hit the other tower, and it spread thoughout the hospital, it was like an air of electricity and disbelief surrounded everyone. Upon hearing of the tragedy everything stopped for a brief second , a second that felt like forever. As the event was declared a disaster we were informed we could not leave the hospital until more information was obtained as to how many victims would be brought to our hospital for trearment. With a mad dash we discharged patients who were stable enough and well enough to go home, in an attempt to make room for the many expected patients we would be recieving. In my own mind I kept thinking how my parents who lived in maine would be worrying. With my brother living in D.C. and my sister living in Long Island and myself in Brooklyn, I knew my parents had to be frantic. Especially after learning that a plane had also gone down at the Pentagon, I asked my boss if there was anyway to make a long distance call to maine. I told her it would only be a couple of minutes. She was able to arrange the call for me, God bless her soul. After a few minutes of trying to calm down my mother and let her know that I was all right, I quickly called my husband on his cell phone to make sure he was ok as I had just learned that a plane had also gone down in Pennsylvania. He was and had told me that they were in the middle of a class about terrorists when a picture of Bin Laden was up on the screen when they heard of the attacks. I told him I did not know when I would be able to leave work but i would try to call him when I had a chance. Trying to prepare for what might come kept us busy , although we never strayed too far from a tv. Watching the towers fall from the physical therapists window,is something I will never forget. I felt like I was in a dream , a very bad dream. I felt that what i was watching was not real, It couldn't be. When we were told we could not leave I felt a sense of relief, since at least at work I would have other people around and would not have to go home alone at a military base. What better target. When things began to quiet down a bit and it was becoming quite apparent that we would not be getting many victims, a sense of reality started to set in at the immense tragedy that had occurred. When we were finally allowed to leave the hospital, I knew I would not be getting much sleep that night. Although we lived only 3 miles form my work it took 45 minutes to get home after being stopped 4 times for security checks and finally making it to the gate. When at the gate the MP's who i knew and who new me were on a hightened state of security. Ironically, it was a relief when they had me step out so they could check my car. Finally making it to the apartment and taking a shower and trying to relax I couldn't help but sit and watch the news all night long. I felt that if I watched it enough it might some how make sense to me how some one could do this. To this day I still dont understand and know I never will. After speaking to my husband several times throughout the night and the next morning, he drove up and came to get me to take me back with him so he could finish his class. Somehow I felt that sitting in a hotel room so far away was better then being in the midst of things. After finally going back home and trying to get on with our lives, I will never forget the scenes I saw and will never forget the smell in the air that lingered for so long. If there is one good thing that come out of this tragedy its the way our country came together in such a time. I am very proud to be an American.
