I am a Professional Firefighter/ Paramedic and a member of Ohio Task Force-1 Urban Search and Rescue FEMA. When I heard of the attacks, I was enroute to my in-laws to cut their grass. I watched in horror on television the first tower collapse. I knew that we had just lost a large number of people in that building. I told my Mother-in-law I had to go. I called my wife on the way home to let her know what was going on. It takes me 45 minutes to drive home from my in-laws. In that time the 2nd tower had fallen. I checked my equipment to make sure I was ready to go. By 11AM we got the call from F.E.M.A. that we had to go to New York. I called my wife to come home from work. Due to traffic she wasn't going to make it. We met at a gas station so we could say good bye. I told her I loved her and I would be o.k. I called my kids at school and told them that I had been deployed to New York, and I would see them soon. We had all of our equipment packed on the trucks, and started for New York by 5:50 pm on the 11th. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: While my father was stationed at Aviano Air Force Base Italy, my family and I were able to tour around Europe. Well on the week of September 11th, 2001 we were in the Cech Republic visiting the city of Prague. I was in seventh grade at the time and going to an Italian school. We had not started school yet so before school started my paretns wanted to take my three younger sisters and I to the Cech Republic. We were suppose to visit there for a week but our trip was cut short after we heard the news of Spetember 11th. Even though my mom did not tell until the day after the attacks, I can still remember the day my mom told me what had happened. But I never fully understood what had happened until I went back home to Italy. My paretns are from New York so being so far away from their family members was extremely tough. Since we were on vacation, we had no way of getting in contact with my family in the states and we did not understand what was being said on the news because we did not speak Cech. My parents tried to gether as much information as they co9uld by popping thier heads in bars trying to watch the news while telling my sisters and i to stay outside. My mom told only me, the oldest of my three sisters while we were walking around a town square in Prague the day after the attacks. I honestly could say i did not know what the twin towers were until my mom described them to me. Once i understodd what she was talking about i was very scared but i was thinking to myself what about all my family in New York? and if that could happen on U.S. soil then what could happen at the bases the military families were at? I was so scared and my mom did not want to frighten my younger sisters while we were still on vacation so she told me not to tell them. After we were done sight seeing for the day we went bac kto the hotel room and my parents tried to understand what the news was saying. We left our trip early to come home and when I got home, it was a new world almost. All the new security poceedures were awful and so long to go through. Just to get onto the base to go food shopping took forever because the guards had to check everyone's cars. When we got home we called my fmaily and none of my immident family were hurt or killed but i had some second cousins that lost their lives and some of my uncle's friends died as well. When school started it was not that big of a deal in the Italian school because i was the only American in the school. I was continually asked if i knew anyone that was hurt and tried to explain to the students what it was like being an American at a time like this. That day will be a day i will never forget because it change my whole view on the world that I thought was somewhat safe. But anything can happen i guess and it effects everyone, no matter who or where you are. Tell us your story: I was at work in my office, what was once a bedroom in an old farm house that has now been converted into the offices of a landscape contractor. There were at least two radios playing in the building, so we heard reports of the first plane hitting the tower on the radio. My boss has a little TV in his office, so we all crowded in there to see what we could hardly imagine. I remember having such a sick feeling looking at the smoking tower, knowing that a whole planeload of innocent people had just died. The phone rang and I headed back to my office to take the call. A few moments later I heard my co-workers groan loudly as they watched the second plant hit the tower. I returned to watch the first replay of the second plane hitting the tower. My mind could not seem to grasp the horror of it at first. Later, I had such a sick helpless feeling as I wondered what mankind had come to for people to be willing to use a whole planeload of innocents as a weapon aimed at an entire skyscraper full of more innocents! The very idea was unthinkable. As the radio announcers spoke of suicide hijackers I wondered at such fanatacism as to give your life in order to commit mass murder. I spent the day, as well as the next few months, on the verge of tears. Disappointed in humanity, greiving for the families of the victims, resigned to the inevitable knee jerk reactions of helpless politicians. I realized immediately that this was not the end of the world. Terrorist attacks have been planned before (and continue to be planned now, I'm sure) but our intelligence agencies usually prevent them. We do have the best intelligence agencies in the world, afterall. Still, even Americans are only human. Error is inevitable in imperfect beings. The flags began appearing on September 12th and as I stopped at lunch to buy a couple for my car, I knew that we were going to be alright. As "God Bless America" and "United We Stand" signs appeared I was ever so proud of our country. Sure, the politicians are reacting with the expected unconstitutional infringements on our liberties, (thus,giving the terrorists their only real victory), but most of us understand that only by standing united and remaining true to ourselves can we defeat terrorism. Americans aquitted ourselves well, our firefighters and rescue workers, even our regular citizens, like those on the flight who found out what was going on and tried to take the plane back, all showed the integrity, honor and heroism of Americans to the world. In actuality, I believe it has never been safer to fly than now, because before, no one could conceive of a highjacker who wanted to use civilian airplanes as weapons against civilian targets, now we know better and forewarned is forearmed, there is no planeful of Americans which would allow this type of tradgedy to happen again. I was going to drive to the county library to do some genealogical research, and upon entering my car and turning on the radio, I heard a news bulletin... The announcer was saying that an airplane had struck the World Trade Center... Running back into the house I yelled to turn on the tv... my children were finishing up their reading assignments for the morning and looked startled as I burst into the living room. My husband ran to the television and we turned on Fox News Channel... Oh, my gosh.... We had tuned in just in time, it seems, to witness the second airplane being driven through the second tower... live. I just dropped to my knees, and started crying... the PEOPLE, the people, Oh NO... My husband was looking stunned, and my poor son, who was 11 years old at the time, just kept asking "What is it? What's going on?" as we tried to usher our 5 year old daughter out of the room... No, she was just too young to have to deal with this. And what was next? As we watched and discovered that the Pentagon was hit, and another airplane was down in Pennsylvania, the questions were flying through my mind at the speed of fear... Are all of the planes in the air accounted for? Are more places going to be attacked? Where is our President? Is he and his family safe? Is there something coming at US? Right now? As the day wore on, and we sat transfixed to the images on our television, we immersed ourselves in prayer, to the Almighty God... He is our rock and our strength. I knew that we would be fine, as His peace flowed over and through me. God would take care of us. God would comfort the comfortless, and give peace to the afflicted... At just before 8, my own alarm went off. The ShockJock on the radio said something about a plane and a building in New York. I thought it was a joke, but in a second of panic, I KNEW something was wrong. I got up and turned on the TV. It was all over the news, the first building. At this point, the newscasters weren't even sure what had hit the building. Was it a plane? but surely it couldn't have been a commercial airliner! a small plane? how did it get by radar? a bomb? It was so much confusion. Ofcourse, I was glued to the TV screen with that deep weight in my stomache as the second plane came out of no where. more confusion on the TV. I needed to talk to my husband. We had just moved and didn't have our phone connected yet. I walked to the corner to call him. It was a glorious day outside. Perfect temperature, little fluffy clouds in the sky. The old Polish men on my street sat outside on the steps and smoked their cigars like normal. I wanted to yell at them to get inside! Turn on your TVs and see that the world is changing before our eyes! but I didn't. I called my husband, frantic. He told me to go home and he would send someone over to be with me. Our friend from down the street with his cellphone came over. He didn't want to be alone anyway, he said. We sat on the couch and and speculated what has happening and what would happen. When the towers fell, the two of us were dumbstruck. I think "oh my God" was the only phrase from my lips for an hour. my husband had to work late, logging people off his company's system in NYC. People he wasn't sure were alive or dead. YOu could see it on his face. We spent the next two days together on the couch watching all the coverage and wondering how we could bring a child into this world. My daughter was born on September 29th, 2001. I saved all the newspapers for her. I want her to be able to go back and read what people were thinking and feeling instead of just watching some footage in a history class. A client called me when she cried out "Oh my God a plane just hit the Twin Towers." Keeping me apprised, she stated another plane hit the Twin Towers. I called my husband who had not heard the news, but immediately turned on the t.v. After being on the phone for a while he said "a plane just hit the Pentagon." I was alone in my office, with tears in my eyes and shaking from fear. Then my husband said a plane heading toward the White House, crashed. I got home, and like everyone in America, we were in shock and disbelief. My family and I held each other for a lifetime that evening and watched the news, our hearts aching for those who lost their lives, anger at those who dared attack this great country, but knowing we would stand tall. Watching the United States unite as one. We were proud of the way different nationalities came together as one nation. We were proud of the way President George Bush led the nation to survival of this tragic day and his search for those who crippled the United States for a short while. Today, September 11, 2002, we pray for those who lost their lives, those families who have lost loved ones, relive our memories, watch the horror from one year ago on t.v. Everyday, we get a little closer to healing, and show the world that the United States will not be defeated. Everyday, I thank God for being a natural born citizen of the United States, thatd my husband became a United States Citizen years ago, and that my son is also a natural born citizen of the United States. Tell us your story: I was working in a windowless room on the 6th floor of the Port Authority at 15th Street and 8th Avenue when the attacks occurred. The first indication that anything was wrong was when the man at the next desk received a phone call from his wife in Albany. She was screaming so loudly that I heard everything she said. Simultaneously, the door to our office flew open and a colleague entered and screamed "Oh, my god, I just saw a plane crash into the WTC" and fainted. We rushed to help him and I called my lawyer in Queens on my cell phone. He was in his car and couldn't get a radio station before our phones went dead. Another colleague and I ran to some offices with windows that faced south. We had a straight-ahead view of the WTC -- the Port Authority building is the tallest building north of the WTC. We stood there and watched the next hour's events with horror. I finally was able to get my lawyer again on the cell phone and was telling him that the fire in the north tower was so out of control that there was no way for it to be put out when the building collapsed. I became so distraught that he strongly urged me to leave the building and walk north. Having no idea what would be in store for the next few hours, I went to my desk, filled a thermos with water, walked down to a deli on 8th Avenue where I bought a foot long hero and some chocolate bars and an apple and set out on foot. I was standing on the curb waiting for the light to change at 7th Avenue when I realized that I didn't have to. There was no traffic and there were thousands of people in the middle of the avenues. I walked up the center of 5th Avenue, part of a silent migration heading north. It's hard to gauge my mood at the time -- I was fully aware of what was going on around me, internally commenting on what I was seeing, yet strangely detached. I marveled that something could bring NYC to a complete stop. I was amazed at the number of people silently trudging north -- grimly silent, not uttering a word. I was frightened by the F16s streaking overhead. My heart was broke within me as I heard the church bells all over Manhattan tolling the dead. I remember staring at the clear blue sky and thinking that in front of me it was a beautiful world and behind me the gates of hell had opened. I turned east on 38th Street and walked up Park Avenue toward Grand Central. Days later I realized that I wasn't completely rational -- I remember looking into Gramercy Park, an odd little side trip for someone making an escape, so I wandered a bit before heading north. I felt wary about entering the Grand Central because it could be a target, but eventually decided to give it a chance. At Park and 41st, a U. S. Customs officer stopped me and let me through when I showed him my Metro North pass. I showed it again to policemen at the station door. Inside the station there were men with bullhorns announcing departing trains. I heard one announce a Stamford train, but the crowd rushing to the platform was too intense. Then I saw some men running towards another platform and yelled "Stamford?" They said yes and I ran after them. We were the first to arrive and were able to get seats on the last car. The train filled quickly. The biggest, burliest, meanest conductor was standing on the platform outside our window controlling the mad crowd -- some people were rushing the sides of the train to presumably climb on top and he herded them back into the station. He even yelled at the conductor of our train, who kept opening the door to let just one more in. We left about noon. The train crawled slowly towards Stamford and I arrived in Larchmont at 3:00 (usually a 40 minute ride). Everyone shared food and drink. But, again, there was very little talk. What could you say at the moment? The only conversation I remember concerned the sharing of working cell phones -- people were passing around the working phones so other people could call home. A man across the aisle deserves an award for kindness. He must have had all of the home numbers of his co-workers in memory and called each one to tell the wife that he saw her husband walking up 6th Avenue. When the train pulled into Larchmont, two Larchmont police officers were on the platform and I saw a squad car moving through the parking lot, so that accounts for three of Larchmont's four-man police force. When we crossed the bridge over the train tracks, we could see the pillar of smoke downtown. When I returned to work on Thursday I was stunned to see every surface, every pole, every wall, covered with pictures of the missing. I walked from Grand Central to my office and the sad truth revealed itself. So many lives, so many families crushed. My heart became heavy with overwhelming grief. The tragedy tapped into a bottomless well of sadness. For months afterwards the sadness lay lie smoke over the city, defining and coloring our world with its grimness. One year later, I still am very affected. I thought with each milestone (3 months, 6 months), I would let go of a little more of the grief. And I have -- I've stopped talking obsessively about it with my friends, the dreams are gone and I don't hyperventilate when a bad memory pays a visit. But I finally came to the conclusion that it will always lie like a lump in my chest, eternally my sad companion, because the enormity of the event is like the enormity of human existence, confirmation that we are a cruel species and allow petty tyranny to control our gentler natures. I sat in the first class of the day, a computer science lab, and instead of paying attention to the instructor I was busy chatting away on Instant Messanger. My best friend started sending me frantic messages that made little sense to me. "America has been attacked". I wrote it off as nothing . Of course I was wrong, I do not feel the need to go over what happened next because all of the grusome details are stitched in all of our minds. Tell us your story: when i first heard of the news, i had just gotten out of the shower. my mom was watching the news and was telling me what had happened. i really didnt know what to say. i didnt have very strong feelings at that moment. i got ready for school and by the time i left, the planes had crashed into the world trade center and into the pentagon. when i got to my first class, my teacher was listening to the radio. we didnt listen to the radio that long and we then started class as usual. i continued with my day as normal as i could. you couldnt get away from it, everyone was talking about it. one strong memory i have is when i was walking to my second period class, i looked into one of the classrooms that had a television on and i saw the buildings collapse. it was strange to think of the people that were still in the building. when i got home from school, i turned on the television and i just sat watching the television for while. they just kept showing the planes crashing and them collapsing. i just turned the television off and trid not to think about it much and find a way to deal with it in my own way. When someone came in and stated that the a plane just crashed in the WTC. Being myself from NY(born and raised there for 33 years) and having just moved to Cleveland, I still consider NY my home. Therefore when she stated what happened I went on break and watched the next plane hit from the television monitor posted outside by the Halle Building. I was stunned!. I could not move because It brought back memories from the bomb that hit in 93 as I was in the WTC at the time on a lunch break, and I thought that it would never happen again. When the towers fell I fell apart, all my memories of the times I spent there during my lunch and the hustle and bustle of the area came flooding back. I was concerned that maybe some people I knew that worked there might have been killed ( I was lucky as no one personal to me was killed or injured.)When it was announced that this was a terrorist attack my anger took over. I was furious and also scared of what else could happen. At that point the only thing I wanted was to go home and be with my family. I sat in front of the news that day for hours watching the coverage and crying for all those that were lost. Then my anger returned again and my NY spirit of never giving up or giving In ,took over and due to the fact that the next day was supposed to be my fathers's memorial service and all flights were cancelled. Me and all my brothers and sisters that were supposed to fly to florida from (Cleveland, Texas,and Tennessee) Decided we would find a way to get there for one reason to honor my Father a veteran who fought for freedom(something the terrorist were trying to make us feel unsure of ) and also as a signal that no one enemy can ever keep us down or hiding as in so many other countries. We all made it by renting a car and driving, some of us for 24-36 hours straight, my brother in Tennesee for a business meeting could not get a rental car so he rented himself a charter bus paying the price of a full bus to get him back to Florida in time. We all made it safe and in one piece and the memorial service that we did not only became that of one for my father but those who perished in The WTC of a country that my father was very proud to serve to ensure our freedom! He asked if I had heard the news. I said that I hadn't. He said: "Dad, you need to turn on the television. Two planes have crashed into the World Trade Center Towers". I couldn't believe it. I hung up the phone and turned on the television. Both towers had already been hit. Having grown up in Manhattan, I felt that something very personal was happening to me. My thoughts went immediately to the potential magnitude of the loss. I wondered how many had already been killed or hurt and recognized that there could easily be thousands killed or hurt before it was over. I simply couldn't fathom the use of planes full of innocent people as weapons of mass destruction. I wondered how many new widows and orphans would be created on this single day and couldn't imagine the sadness that they would be feeling. As the reports began to come in about the plane that hit the Pentagon and then, about the plane that crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, I suddenly recognized that anxiety was setting in. I wondered how many more planes were in the air and headed for other targets. The site of the south and the north tower collapsing were surreal and were made even more so by the relative objectivity with which the television reporters were describing the events. I wanted to speak with my wife and children even though I was virtually certain that they were all alright. As it became evident that these were well planned terrorist attacks, my anxiety was quickly replaced with anger. I remember having thoughts of revenge and quickly coming to the conclusion that the only sure means of getting at these shadowy figures would be to treat any nation that harbored them in the same way that we would treat the terrorists themselves. I was amazed that within hours, President Bush was on television vocalizing exactly what I had been thinking. I remember how proud I felt to be an American and a native New Yorker. I remember thinking that I wanted to do something to help but had no idea what. As the day progressed, I remained glued to the television in my office. I eventually again heard from my son and then from my daughter who was also at college in Boston. I remember feeling relieved that they were both alright. When my wife came home from her day of teaching school, she told me that the young son of the secretary at our local high school was in his office, high in the south tower of the World Trade Center and on the phone with his mother when the second plane hit. I remember thinking that it was unlikely that he had survived and that it could easily have been one of my sons or my daughter. The facts continued to unfold and the television pictures became increasingly surreal. I wondered how the events of the day would impact upon the bigger historical picture and in what context the day would be remembered in the future. I had no doubt that none of our lives, as Americans would ever be the same. I knew that the world had become a different place. Tell us your story: I am Sergeant with NYC Health Department Police unit, I just left my son 30 minutes earlier (8:05) at his new school in kew gardens Queens, from there I proceeded to patrol the sites I supervise and prepared to enter a meeting at 125 worth street for 9:00 am. I was going into manhattan through the BQE, I saw a sizeable amount of traffic, I was concerned I be late for my meeting, I look to my right there was tower one smoking, I called my chief of department to see what was going on , he replied a cessna flew into the world trade one, I said okay and montior radio traffic to see what was going on. I am hearing eyewitness accounts on 1010 WINS about the problem, I figure let me get off the highway, but I couldnt, I approached greenpoint avenue exit and saw emergency vehicles heading into midtown tunnel proceeding to manhattan. I thought to myself there's my brothers in red and blue doing what they do best, I hesitated to go with them figuring they could handle the job. I took! the sidestreets of brooklyn to get to the Manhattan bridge, I am still listening to the radio" ....oh my god another one hit the twin towers" was screamed across the radio..I knew then it was a terrorist attack , I proceeded to contact my Chief again but the cell phone went dead, at this point I was flooring the gas to get downtown, traffic was hell, people was standing outside thier cars looking at the carnage, Health Department has a medical station at flatbush extension in Ft.Green brooklyn, I proceeded there. I arrived at 0915 hours, citywide call for first responderfs went out, first responders couldnt get through, I grab 2 officers from that medical station, and some health department civilian personell, we set up a incident command center for the Health Department at Ft.Green, and then proceeded to untangle the mess of traffic on flatbush avenue feeding from Atlantic avenue, we shut down the left lanes on opposites sides of the avenue to allow responders through, and! diverted traffic away from the area.. to this day I regret doing that, I was able to get 3 engines and 2 ladders through, One of which was the ill fated engine pictured in the daily news crossing the brooklyn bridge. At 1000 hours I recieved help from NYPD recruits, that help allowed me to get repsonders and thier personal vehicles through. One of my officers said Sarge they are in need of medical supplies, I ordered civilians and 3 responding Health Police officers to empty the clinics of thier medical supplies and load it into my pickup truck, a redcross voulnteer appeared from nowhere and ask if he could assist, No problem I said , this whole time I had my back turned to Manhattan and I turned around and saw clouds of dust, people started yelling the buildings are collapsing," radio traffic ..my deputy chief screaming to one of our detective to run to chambers street" ... about this time truck was fully loaded, and we proceeded to 125 worth street and foley square park ! where a triage area was set up. The journey was slow everyone was runnning out the city and crossing over the Manhattan bridge, I arrived at 1100 hours the scene was incredible ghosts walking through the canyon of hereos'..these were people covered in white dust, Red cross voulnteer was still with me after we drop off supplies, there was a major need for water, we retrieve 60 30 gallaon water bottles from health department offices at 2 lafayette street. We proceeded back to brooklyn where I was to meet other health police officers reporting for duty, I got back to flatbush extension, and responding NYFD firefighters were walking from Atlantic avenue and requested a drop into ground zero, I made 5 trips that afternoon. Red Cross still by my side help me answer a call for orange juice ( go figure). We went to northern boulevard in Queens to get fuel for our police vehicles, since all gas stations used by the city in brooklyn was out of gas. Red Cross saw a Western Beef Store a! cross from the Merit Gas Station on Northern Boulevard, He said " I'll be right back" . As I top the tank off, he says I have a suprise for you, Western beef donated 300 half gallon containers of Orange juice, Lights and Sirens we loaded it up and got it downtown to the three triage areas that was set up at Pace, Foley square and 125 worth street, with that Red Cross disappeared and went to the Hot zone to retireve bodies. That night 20 health police officers, NYS court officers , and NYC police and myself secure the perimeters of lower manhattan, till this day I still see the yellow haze and feel the choking dust in my lungs, oh yeah I was given a souvenier "WTC Cough", 1 year later I still have it. I was running a little late; got out of the shower and the news was on. All I could see was a burning building. At the time I did not know where at first but I then found out it was the WTC. That was before the second tower got hit. I was on my way to work when I heard the news. I knew it was serious because every radio station was pre-empted. I got to work and learned that the second tower had been hit. All of us were glued to the television and in shock the whole day. My husband called me when the first tower collapsed and said that he had to leave the room since he started breaking out in tears. And there is not much that causes him to do this. The following day two of my colleagues got into a fight and were terminated. Apparently the stress caused them to get into what ended up as a physical confrontation because they were arguing about the volume of the TV at work. I think the thing that affected me most was the silence in the DFW area. I live close to the airport and it was very strange not hearing the planes overhead. That and the flags at half mass was very emotional. I guess what scares me the most is that I could very well have been me on that plane as I travel frequently. I sometimes have nightmares about nuclear attacks, bombs, bio threats, etc. I can't even begin to imagine the terror going through those people's minds. I recently suffered a severe panic attack when boarding a plane and had to get back off the plane and take a later flight as I was suffering from so much anxiety. My heart goes out to all families, friends, and collegues of those lost in the 9/11 attack. Tell us your story: 2001, i was 16 years old, a sophomore in high school. still a child, but maturing into an adult......... i remember waking up on 9-11, to see my cousin in my living room watching tv. this is appox. 530 am PST. seeing the twin towers on fire, i thought this was some kinda movie or something on the sci-fi channel. being scared i asked, "hey whatcha watching?" he said someone flew the plane into the towers. stunned, i got dressed for school which starts at 815. so i had less than 3 hours to go. i got dressed as fast as i could, and sat with him. we talked and talked about it, who did this? why did they do it? was it an accident? then we watched in horror as the second plane went into the other tower. news breaks flashing in and out with the other planes and their crashes. shocked, we go to school and find everyone there talking about it, crying, huddling up. being a peer counselor, i had so many referrals that day. i was scared so i couldn't help my classmates, when i needed help myself. was this what my grandparents felt when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor? My parents when Kennedy was shot? my older cousins when Challenger exploded? after a rough day at school, we had our Boy Scout Meeting. Me, being the Senior Patrol Leader (Head Scout) i had to explain to 10 younger Scouts what happened and help them cope with what had happened. that weekend was our yard sale, so we made a flagpole, raised the flag to full mast, said the plegde of alleigence, then lowered the flag to half mast while Taps played on a CD player. we then observed a moment of silence for all that were lost, and prayed for the people who were trapped in the debris. looking back 5 years later, i see how precious life is and how sudden it can change. its still makes me scared and i get goosebumps when i see the video of the planes hitting, or the towers crumbling. i get teary-eyed when i see the Pentagon smoking and people running everywhere. what calms my fears and makes me proud is Flight 93. how such couragous people, sensing something was wrong, decided to risk their lives so many more could live. what if it hit the Capitol? our lawmakers wouldn't be here. and if it had struck the White House, what would the US response be? we can infer many things from 9-11. it will always always be a sad day, but amidst all the tears and cries, average joes and janes became heroes. we all reached out, regardless of race, sex or religious beliefs, and said "my fellow american, feel free to cry on my shoulder, everything will be ok" Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Tell us your story: THE NEWS BROADCAST CAME ACROSS THE SCREEN AND I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS SEEING.IT WAS ONE OF THOSE FEELING WHEN YOU WONDER, "AM I REALLY SEEING THIS OR IS IT A SCENE FROM SOME MOVIE?" YOU HAVE A COMPLETE FEELING OF HELPLESS, PURE HORROR. BEING HOME I WANTED ALONE I WANTED TO REACH OUT AND CONTACT MY WHOLE FAMILY, HERE IN THE U.S. AND ABROAD. I FINALLY REACHED MY HUSBAND ON HIS CELL PHONE ON THE JOB SITE WHERE HE WAS WORKING OUT OF TOWN. HE HAD NOT HEARD THE NEWS AND HE COULD NOT BELIEVE WHAT I WAS TELLING HIM. HE HUNG UP WITH ME AND I TRIED TO REACH MY OLDEST DAUGHTER IN SCOTLAND. SHE IN RETURN HAD HEARD THE NEWS AND WAS CALLING ME AT THE SAME TIME I WAS DIALING HER. BY NOW I WAS IN A COLD SWEAT, THE REALITY THAT SHE HAD ONLY 12 DAYS PRIOR BEEN IN THE WORLD TRADE CENTER. SHE WAS IN NEW YORK WITH HER IN-LAWS AND HAD TAKEN THEM ON THEIR FIRST TOUR OF THE CENTER. HER HUSBAND WORKS FOR THE GLASGOW BRANCH OF MORGAN STANLEY AND I THANKED GOD THAT HE WORKS IN SCOTLAND INSTEAD OF HERE IN THE STATES. I ALSO PRAYED FOR THE VICTIMS, THEIR FAMILIES AND FOR EVERYONE EVERYWHERE. THINGS WERE HAPPENING SO FAST AND YOU DID NOT KNOW WHERE THEY WOULD HIT NEXT. I EXPERIENCED ALL SORTS OF FEELINGS IN SUCH A SHORT TIME BUT I THINK THE STRONGEST ONE WAS THE FEELING OF COMPLETE OUTRAGE. I STILL HAVE THAT FEELING ALMOST A YEAR LATER. I ALSO INSTALLED A FEAR IN ME THAT IS STILL THERE TODAY AND WILL PROBABLY STAY WITH ME THE REST OF MY LIFE. I WAS PLANNING A TRIP TO VISIT MY DAUGHTER IN SCOTLAND, I WAS SUPPOSED TO LEAVE ON SEPTEMBER 23, 2001. ON DECEMBER 27, I FINALLY GOT UP THE NERVE TO MAKE MY TRIP BUT I WILL ADD I DID IT WITH COLD FEET AND CLAMMY PALMS. THE TRIP WAS SMOOTH BUT THE FEAR PF FLYING WAS NOT IN ME BEFORE 9/11. I MIGHT ADD THAT I WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE WAY SECURITY HAD BEEN BEEFED UP, THIS ALSO HELPED TO CALM MY FEARS. I'LL CLOSE WITH THE HOPE AND PRAYER THAT WE WILL NOT EVER BE HIT WITH A HEARTLESS BLOW LIKE WE EXPERIENCED THIS PAST SEPTEMBER.
