Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just dropped my children off at school and then came home and sat down in front of the television. When I turned it on I wasn't sure of what I was seeing. There was a tall building on fire and I admit I didn't recognize it at first. I thought it was a plane crash that was happening somewhere else in the world. As I listened I realized it was one of the Twin Towers that was hit. It still didn't seem so bad at first. It looked like just part of a floor was on fire and that most everyone would get out. I felt so bad for the families of the people on that floor, not yet realizing the horror that was to come. Then the newscasters started telling the statistics of just how many people worked there and could be in that building. Everyone was wondering if it was an accident or something worse. Then, as I watched in disbelief, another planed crashed into the second tower. I knew instantly that none of it was an accident...this was an act of terrorism. I remember crying and saying, "No...you rotten bastards", and wondering what else could happen next. I called my parents and my in-laws to let them know what was happening. I was glued to the set...I felt so helpless...I wanted to do something...anything...but I just sat there watching and waiting. Then the Pentagon was hit. One of the stations was reporting that a journalist was on that plane and had called her husband before they crashed. I kept wondering how many more planes were going to crash and thinking, "What if some of the passengers could do something. If they knew the planes were being used as bombs, couldn't they do something?" I knew it was just a desperate thought...how could anyone do anything if they weren't prepared or trained? Then the towers fell....first one...then the other. It was incomprehensible. How could these gigantic skyscrapers just collapse in on themselves and come crashing down...floor by floor crushing everything inside? I thought things had been horrific up to that point....then I knew what horrific really was. It was seeing the Twin Towers being hit and burning, over and over again on the television. It was hearing how many people worked in those towers each day. It was watching people jump out of windows to their deaths, because they couldn't stand the burning heat in the building. It was watching the Pentagon being hit and knowing there were more planes unaccounted for. It was seeing United States citizens and United States icons being destroyed by people with hate in their hearts. It was especially, watching those buildings come down and knowing there were people in them. Knowing there were police and firefighters in them who had risked their lives to get as many people out as they could and in doing so had lost their own lives. It was the shock of seeing all this unfold and knowing we couldn't do anything to stop it. And then it was seeing that the last plane unaccounted for had crashed and there were no survivors. As the stories started rolling in about cell phone calls from Flight 93 passengers and what they had said, a picture of heroism started to unfold. It started with the police and firefighters that had gone into the Twin Towers and continued with the passengers of Flight 93 who tried to retake the plane so no more people would die below. It continued after that day with the men and women that dedicated themselves to cleaning up Ground Zero and accomplished it before a year had rolled by. 911 was such a horrific tragedy...but out of the ashes we have become stronger as a nation and patriotism has made a true comeback. Citizens are feeling more connected to each other as we have all experienced this together. Terrorism did not accomplish it's objective. Instead of making us cower and flee the region the terrorists came from... we went in there and went after the cowards who were hiding in their caves. We are not a weaker nation as they hoped.. we are stronger and feel more connected to our country than ever before. May God Bless America! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was at the beginng of my sophomore year at East Stroudsburg University. I had Physical Geology at 9 a.m. that morning. As usual I awoke at 7:30 to shower and get ready. I never turned on the t.v. because my roommates were sleeping. I left my room at approximately 8:45 a.m. to go to class. We all sat there through the whole class not even having a clue as to what was going on in New York or in Washington D.C. After my class I had a meeting to go to. I met my sister as usual before the meeting and that is when I found out. She told me that planes had crashed into the twin towers and the pentgon. I remember her mentioning something about being attacked. I did not think she was serious but she insisted she was. We went to the room where the meeting was to be held, but no one was in there. Everyone was in the office glued to the t.v. That's when I first saw the replays of the planes hitting and the first tower collapsing. I was in disbelief. We eventually had our meeting and when it was over my sister and I went to eat lunch. We both had a class at 12 (we were actually in the same class). When we arrived at class and were waiting to go into the classroom someone came in and said that classes were cancelled and the university is closed. I really did not believe that the university closed because it is very seldom that the university closes. I went back to my residence hall and asked my resident director if the university was really closed and she said yes. That's when it hit me. This really did happen. For the first time that day I was truly frightened. Everyone was calling my room- my mom, my great aunt margie, and my fiance. I was espcially worried about my fiance because he worked in Allentown, one of the bigger cities nearby. I was not sure what would happen next. Would there be another attack or was it over? For the next several months I was frightened each time I heard a helicopter landing at the nearby hospital or even a plane flying in sky. I remember screaming alone in my TV room, no, no they didn?t do this, no no no. It is exactly one year later. It still seems unbelievable. I had watched the Twin Towers being built. I worked on Wall Street and from my 26th floor office I saw them go up, floor by floor. Year after year they grew, and one day, amazingly, they were done. I commuted to work for three years through the basement of the buildings, walking out to the Plaza and to my office. Then one year I left NYC and moved to Boston, returning only for fun, like seeing friends, or going to the theatre and once, attending a wedding at Windows on the World. This loss of life, this loss of community, was so enormous. The sorrow is so deep; the pain so strong; the death so pointless, so unnerving. I felt so powerless to do anything. I didn?t know what to do. I vowed to carefully read every single obituary in the New York Times because I felt I owed at least this to each one. I wanted to try to remember the dead, and give their deaths meaning and importance as long as I could. I felt grateful to not have known anyone killed on the planes or in the buildings. I read obituaries for eleven months, and then one day I read an obituary of someone I knew.. And then the significance changed again, and I grieved more personally for a lost soul I remembered from long ago I was compelled to visit Ground Zero immediately. I had to look at this hole, at this devastation and searing horror. I wanted to see it straight on. So I went to New York two weeks later in September 2001. And I took these pictures that I send. The pictures cannot possibly show the pain or destruction or magnitude of this event. And more than anything, they cannot reveal the horrible smell. The acridity of the air, intolerable to breathe, burning and searing ones eyes so you could not stay looking because the pain was so great and the smell of death and destruction so powerful, it was impossible to be there and feel alive. It was an intolerable act leaving an intolerable devastation. The fences were just going up and the signs of restriction and posters of the missing tacked everywhere. Cables had been laid down in the streets to restore electricity and water. Piles of flowers and caps and teddy bears and despairing love notes laid out waist high in memoriam. Dust and ashes covered everything, smoke spiraled to the sky from piles in the site. Businesses were shut. Long, long trucks rumbled by piled high with twisted messes of stone and steel. The wind blew endlessly through everything. People were totally silent. Some nights I play tennis on clay courts. After the game the players must sweep the courts for the next players. Thanks for the well wishes and prayers. The memorial services were beautiful and the Flight 93 Crew Monument is amazing. I'm glad many of you enjoyed my commentaries and or sightings on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, C-Span, Action News, etc. It was a sad and emotional day to say the least... A man came up to me after the memorial service and told me he saw me on the "Today Show." He said that my comments made him want to pay respect to those who perished on Flight 93. For some reason, I turned on the TV that day. I usually never watch TV before school, but that morning, I decided to see if there was anything interesting on. To my surprise, there was news coverage on the Twin Towers on every single channel. At first, I had no idea what was going on. I saw images of two, tall buildings on fire, but I didn't know what had happened to cause such a thing to happen. My parents were in the living room watching it when I was about to leave for school. They told me that a plane had crashed into the Twin Towers that morning in New York. At my high school, that was what all the commotion was about. My Biology teacher brought in the TV for us to watch during class. The whole schedule at school was off that day. No one really wanted to teach or learn while there was so much disaster going on. Innocent people were dead, firemen and policemen were working hard to rescue others, hospitals were full with injured victims, and all around the world, people were asking, "Why did this happen?" What happened on September 11th was a very tragic thing to have happened to our nation- the United States of America. We lost our sense of security, and nothing would ever be the same again. I was sad that such a terrible thing had occurred and hoped that all the families who were affected more deeply than mine would be able to cope with the disaster. It was a horrid nightmare to many, and I truly hope that it would never repeat itself again. I turned on KTVU news (which I do every morning) and saw something unimagiable. A plane hit World Trade Center. It was crazy and amazing. By this time everyone was spectulating that I was an accident,etc. Until I saw the second plane hit, and I knew something was seriously wrong. I got the kids up and proceeded to go to work, with a fastily beating heart and nerves. I didn't want to frighten the kids, so I took them to school. I proceeded to work and the bus, but it seemed like no one else knew what went on but me. When I got to work, I was informed from a co worker that a 3rd plane hit the pentagon. I received a call from my kids school that parents needed to pick up there children since America was under attack. When I got home, I explained to my kids what happened and they understood. Thank God for Nick Jr. channel it was the only one that wasn't broadcasting the attacks. 9/11/01 is a day I will NEVER forget. We both worked at MSNBC at the time. I had a precious day off so she left for work as she usually did, late. I went back to sleep. The phone rang around 8:45am. I figured it was Maria telling me she arrived at work - as she did from time to time. Too lazy to get out of bed to answer the phone I let it ring. Then, less than ten seconds later the phone started to ring again. Again, I let it go into voicemail. I was wondering why she would try again so quickly. I figured I would call her back shortly. I buried my head in my pillow when the phone started ringing again right away. I thought, what in the world is this girl ringing the phone off the hook for? Doesn't she realize I might be in the shower or something? I rolled out of bed and picked up the phone. Hello? Maria's distraught voice echoed, "Turn on the TV, a plane just hit the World Trade Center." I asked her to repeat. I assumed a small plane had hit the side of the building. I wondered if anyone below on the street had been killed by falling wreckage. Then, when I saw the image we all know so well of the hole in the tower I realized it wasn't a small plane. Once she got my attention she had to get back to work - being that she works in cable news. I immediately knew I had to call my mother in Florida to tell her that I was okay because as with all mother's she would fear the worst. I dialed her at work while keeping an eye on the television. As soon as she answered I told her I was okay. "What are you talking about?" she asked. I realized she did not know what was going on. Once I told her she didn't believe me because I have a habit of joking around a lot. But I soon convinced her I was serious and that she should get to a TV. Suddenly I saw an explosion in the other tower on TV. I couldn't believe it was happening right across the river from where I was, less than a mile away. "Oh my God, mom, there's been an explosion! I have to go!" I assured her I would be okay then hung up. I then frantically got dressed. I propped the door open because I didn't have keys and ran outside. In front of the building is a bus stop. When I ran down the stairs I saw people just reading papers and waiting for the bus. I couldn't believe they didn't know. The first person I came up to was a blond woman. "Do you know what happened?" I asked frantically. She looked at me with a strange expression - I'm sure I looked a little crazy - and she shook her head no. I told her then took off around the corner to the waterfront. When I arrived there was a large group gathered watching the towers burn. Two large black plumes of smoke reached up and out into the sky. It was truly a surreal scene - one I still have trouble contemplating more than a year later. People were on cell phones talking about what was going on with people at home that had access to the news. I overheard different reports. "It was two planes, another plane, the Pentagon has been hit, terrorism." The magnitude of the moment was beyond me. Being a journalist the next thing I thought of was getting a camera. I went back to Washington Street, the main road in Hoboken, and went into a drug store owned by Asians to buy an instant camera. I was surprised they were still open and even more surprised how calm they were. One woman was sweeping. "Can you believe this?" I asked. "Terrible," the man said with an accent. "That'll be nine dollars please." I ran back across the street to a park to get a vantage point but the fence kept it out of view so I ran out of the park and down to the water. I remember an officer was stopping traffic going down towards the main part of Hoboken where the towers were best seen. As I walked I realized what a beautiful day it was. It was warm and sunny. I started walking along the water taking pictures every few minutes. It was such a strange feeling. I was alone as I walked along the water, it was a beautiful day, and I was taking pictures of death and destruction in the distance. As I approached the main park in Hoboken which is right across the water from the WTC I continued to snap pictures. One man yelled at me as I took another picture. "You're sick!" I felt bad. I wasn't taking pictures because I thought it was neat. I was talking them as if my mind was unable to compute what it was seeing and I knew I would need some sort of reference at a later time. As I walked into the park I ended up behind a group of trees and the WTC was out of view. Then I heard it. A rumble followed by screams. Men who were up in a high rise being built at the time roared in agony as if their screams would somehow be able to stop what was happening. The first tower was falling down. Me and some others under the trees ran to get to the other side to see what was happening. When we emerged all we saw was a large cloud of smoke rolling through lower Manhattan. One tower was gone. People all around me were crying out, sobbing, swearing at nameless people. I felt like I had been punched in the stomach. A woman started calling out. "Does anybody want to pray for the families?" She started a prayer circle and I joined about 20 others. She prayed for about two minutes but at the time it seemed so useless although being a Christian I know it wasn't. While standing there I tried to dial my phone to reach more family and friends but it was dead. I asked a woman if I could borrow her phone but she said hers didn't work either. She had an accent that sounded German. Having lived in Germany I asked if she was but she said she was from Israel. "We see this in Israel every day," she said. Soon an officer was chasing us out of the park. We all slowly retreated back out of the park. I stopped for a few moments as the other building burned. I think I was in shock as after a few minutes I simply turned and walked away. Once around the corner and out of sight of the WTC I heard another rumble and more screams. "The other tower just fell," I said to myself. I found a payphone where I decided to call my sister in Florida collect. An opperator put me right through. "Hey Jen! It's Steve! Calling from wonderful New York!" I said trying to be funny. I then started sobbing. I told her I was okay, that I loved her, and that I wanted her to get right with God. I told her to call friends of mine as getting through was so difficult. I trudged back to Maria's apartment where I called her at work and told her I was coming in. We were told about the attacks via email from our principal and told NOT to tell the children. As I sat at the computer screen reading about the attacks, I felt my heart sink and my brain struggled to turn around and face 24 students with a smile on my face. How I did it I will never know. I felt like a zombie the entire day as I taught the subjects. Parents began showing up to pick up their sons and daughters and I wanted so badly to leave and hug my children. I live near TMI, the nuclear reactor and my biggest fear was that it would be targeted too. I was so glad when school was over and I could go home and just let out all the emotions I felt that day. I wanted to stay with my family and never leave them. My mind still cannot handle the terrible hatred these people have for us. I know I will never forget where I was and what I felt that day. Tell us your story: When I was young, I heard my grandparents talk about remembering exactly where they were and exactly what they were doing when JFK was shot..my mother can tell me to this day who she was with and where she was when she found out Elvis had died. I believe everyone will always remember where they were, what they were doing, and who they were with on September 11th, 2001.. I had just started homeschool that week, and as usual, I was sleeping in. My grandfather came in that morning and asked me to come turn on the tv, that two planes had collided in New York...little did I know when I turned on the tv that morning that I would witness the biggest event of my life. I think we sat and stared in disbelief and horror for hours. I attempted to do my schoolwork, but was unable to. My uncle was due to come home that day, he had been out of town with his work..my niece, or technically cousin, had just turned 8 months old on the 3rd..we were unable to get ahold of him that day, and it was the only time he hadn't sent my aunt an itinerary, as well as the secretary at his office. We were on our way to the baby's doctor and when we walked into the office the receptionist told us that a plane hit the one of the Twin Towers. The first thing I thought was it was an accident, I never thought of terrorism. After we got home from our appointment, we did learn it was terrorism. What should have been one of the best days our lives was one of the saddest we've had. It was difficult to give complete attention to my newborn baby that had various difficulties that needed my full attention, when my heart was suffering for all of the people who perished on September 11th. The one question I think over and over every day, is how could anyone be so cruel and end so many people's lives? No God would commend any such act. They will have to pay in the end. While I was waiting for orientation to begin, another new employee came in the lunchroom and told us that "someone is attacking the WTC and the Pentagon." Now, as shocking as the news was, there was no television at this company, so we had to go by just what the radio stations were telling everyone. We listened to the radio all day, and once the day was over, I drove to get my husband at work. I continued to listen to the radio, and I started crying because of all the horror of the tragedy, yet neither my husband or I had yet to actually see the images of what happened. Once we arrived home, we immediately turned the TV onto CNN. I just stood still for what seemed like an eternity, yet, it was only a few minutes. The most terrifying image of that day was watching the coverage of people jumping from the WTC. That was what made me cry, scream and become furious that someone could do this to us, all in the name of a "religion????" My heart goes out to all the families of the victims and to all the heroes who survived and who sacrificed their lives to save others. As quickly as the thought entered, I pushed it aside trying to convince myself that something of that magnitude was simply not possible. Not here, not in our own country. It was a term of respect bestowed on a man who played every position on his softball team. And on a basketball court he could rifle passes from behind his back, thread a ball between a defenders legs, or just drain jump shots from anywhere on the court. The name grew on him because he immigrated to the United States from Cuba when he was 12 without knowing a word of English, but he studied and worked hard and was eventually appointed to the Board of Directors of the Mercantile Exchange in New York. His family also recognized his generosity, saying he was kind enough to give the same homeless person a couple of bucks the mornings that he walked from church in New York City to his office. "He could sing, too," said 23-year-old Christopher, one of Motroni's three sons. "He was in a salsa band for 25 years. . . . I'm telling you, my father earned that nickname. If I could be one-tenth of what my father was, I would be better than 99.9 percent of the people in the world." His father's success is part of the reason Christopher followed him into the world of stock trading. Every day when he got home from work, Mark asked Christopher, who lives with his parents, what he did that day and what he learned. Motroni helped Christopher to study for his impending Series Seven exam -- a test to be a licensed stock trader. Christopher drove into Hoboken every morning with his dad, where they both took the PATH train to work. Christopher could see the Twin Towers from his office and heard the boom when the first plane struck the North Tower. "I thought someone was throwing a parade," Christopher said. Even before the second plane struck, Christopher was frantically calling both his father and his mother, Emily. Christopher eventually headed back to Hoboken and waited there for three hours, praying that his father would bound off the ferry. He added that his family is still in a state of disbelief. To the Motroni Family, Please allow me this opportunity to express my heartfelt sorrow, and our prayers to the Motroni Family. Mark was always an inspiration to me throughout my career in commodities. I first came to know Mark, when I took my first job on Wall Street at Bache & Company, 100 Gold Street. I started very green as a commodity margin clerk in 1974, while attending college across the street at Pace University. That didn't last very long, as they reassigned me to the commodity futures deliveries department, where I first came to know Sr. Antonio Suarez. Antonio was my mentor for understanding the basics of the commodity business, both from the front office, as well, back office perspective. In my opinion, Antonio succeeded in delivering me new values, and for appreciating the contributions that one can impact for process. Antonio was a workhorse, and he carried this fledling until I could spread my wings a bit, and carry more load. Proud of our hispanic heritage, his Cuban, mine Puerto Rican, we always respected each others viewpoints and for the joint dedication to accomplish each day's task, which frankly was full of turns and challenges. I still miss my friend Antonio Suarez, and he is in my prayers always! Antonio introduced me to Mark Motroni while at an FIA conference, and Mark always flying high in those circles. I remember attending the funeral of Mark's mother, with Antonio very saddened by the passing of his dear sister and his comforting Mark. Mark and I had the opportunity to work for the same company together, although only for a short while, and he like his Uncle helped me to understand some of the business basics which he so graciously shared. Mark became the Vice-Chairman for NYMEX, and I then knew that he could transend some levels of attainment that many of us could hardly dream of in the business world! That's what we distinctly remember as our Hero! Believe Mark thoroughly enjoyed his participation in Orquesta Novel, and I just loved the combination of hearing that Charanga beat and sound, while simultaneously, associating him with Wall Street and his commitment for it! "It felt the same as the bombing in 1993," Motroni Jr. said. "The lights flickered, the building shook. I just got out of there. When I was outside, I saw the fire coming out of the tower. I knew my father was up there. I knew he was in trouble." Mark Motroni Sr. played basketball at Manhattan's George Washington High School and graduated in 1963, the same class as baseball Hall of Famer Rod Carew. Motroni Sr. loved sports and music. My name is Miguel Martin and I have been a singer for 23 years. I have made five solo albums and recorded with many people,from Celia Cruz to Luis Enrique. I first met Marco in 1982 in New York when I was singing with "La Charanga Casino". I cannot express the grief I felt when I heard the news. I heard the news through Felo Barrio who was like Marco,one of the legends of New York latin music. I always admired Marco very much,as did all professional singers at that time in New York. We,the members of La Casino were very big fans of his and of the rest of La Novel. I always looked up to Marco and Alberto as charanga royalty. I even remember once,around 1985,I actually bumped into him at the Towers,but I could not possibly imagine he still worked there. I have since taken out all my Novel albums and listened and listened. I have also stared at the covers and I have wept. To me,he was not the succesful businessman,but one of the greatest tipica singers in New York city latin music history. I feel honored that I gravitated in his sphere at that time and that we spoke many times,he being a veteran and me just a young man starting out. I worked for AT&T and now retired. I was on the phones when someone came in and said a plane had hit the towers and I just thought it was a mistake and kept working. Well not to long from the first person that came in another comes in and says another plane had hit the towers, well that was it I jumped up and went into the next room where there was a TV along with all other employees. We all stood in front of the TV all day and no one said a thing to us. We could not belive what we were hearing. I was walking on campus and ran into a friend of mine and broke the terrible news to me. I was shocked and in disbelief. We walked to her home joining her roommates and tuned into the news to watch and learn what had happened. After several hours I went home to meet my girlfriend at the time and her roommate and our close friends. The mood was somber and I can tell you that from day on, it brought us closer together and I will always remeber that day for that.
