We were sitting in the waiting room of the third floor, talking and watching the T.V., when a news flash came on and we seen the tower on fire. At first we didn't know what had happened. Then, there it was! We seen the other plane coming! Oh, my God! It crashed into the other tower, then we knew it wasn't an accident. It was done on purpose. I was shocked, numb, my heart went out to all those people and at the same time, I was sadden very much. I thought it could have been the end of time and I would not have been with my family, but at the same time. Well, it was, very much the end of time for all those people and they were not with their famlies either. I cried. It was an awful thing to have happened and under mans'hands. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just woke up after flying back from Seattle, WA., the evening before. My father had died and I spent just over a week with my mother. I don't usually turn on the TV in the morning, but something compelled me to this day. I changed to the Network stations to hear that something had hit the World Trade Center. As I began to get caught up on the details, I saw the second plane look as if it were flying in the distance near the WTC. To my disbelief it crashed right into it. All I could think about was there would be some moms & Dads that wouldn't be going home that night. I had a bad feeling in my stomach and tears going down my face. I have always had respect for life, but this put even more light on it because I had an unborn child that was two months away. That could have been me or mine in one of the planes or working in the WTC. The other fact that will always have significance is that my wedding anniversary is on this day. Had I decided to leave the same day as this event, I would have unable to come home when the airports were shutdown. I would like the world to know that this type of hate has less to do with religion or culture (Islam) as it does people being educated on the facts. It also does not help to follow a person or ideal and not question that which seems not to fit ideals or make sense within our "common sense." I hope this ordeal has gone a long way to change the thoughts and actions of even our homegrown Milita groups. We have the capacity to forgive, but should never forget. My daughter called me from home and informed me that a plane had struck the World Trade Center. I did not think to much of this, because I thought maybe she was misunderstanding what had actually happened, I thought maybe a plane crashed in New York or something. As I was speaking to her, she screamed with much excitment, that another plane crashed in the second twin towers, at that time no one in my office (Dana Farber Cancer Institute) heard what had happened. At that moment I hung up the phone and ran right to the nearest television, with most of my co-workers in pursuit. We all looked at the TV, with pain and grief, knowing that there were probably people actually in the building, since this was a work day and very early in the morning. Patients, Staff, Physicians and etc., were all watching the TV, with horror and pain. We could not work all day, knowing that there was other plane crashes (Pentagon and Pennsylvania) also. Oh, how many lives were lost so quickly and unneccesary. I will never forget this day and I prayed this morning at exactly 8:46am and asked God to please watch over the souls of the innocent victims and their families and to please continue to give them comfort and strength for the remaining part of their years. This event has made me appreciate my family and loved ones. There is not a day that goes by that I don't let my Husband,Mother, Siblings and children, know how much I love them and adore them. The only great thing that came out of this tragedy is that Americans are a closer knit family and we will always be unified and proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I entered the lobby of the mid sized hotel I operated in Dallas, TX and entered a twilight zone it seemed. The first plane had hit and everyone was glued to the television in the breakfast area. No one was sitting down eating a relaxing breakfast; they were all standing, arms crossed, hands to faces, eyes showing disbelief. As I caught on to what was happening, you wondered, how could a plane make such a grave mistake, as we watched the smoke, and discussed the horror, the real horror hit, the second plane plunged into the second tower! Tears filled our eyes, we could not speak. We all starred, glued to the events that were, as we stood there, changing our lives. Soon, guests were finding out the airports were shutting down and finding out they were stranded. There seemed to be a panic inside us all. All they could think of was, ?How? do they get home to their families. Salesmen came in off the street that had been run out of downtown offices as Dallas was evacuating the Dallas World Trade Center and Governmental and Federal offices just a few miles away. Guests were desperately trying to find rental cars, bus tickets, any possible means to get home. The hotel staffs, van driver and I, were driving people to the car rental agencies, to the downtown bus station, or extending the guest stays that ended up just stuck. All the while, we stayed with the news reporters that were telling us the future had changed and the extent of the tragedies. The day seemed to pass in slow motion, so fast! The sky in Dallas was clear, not a plane in the sky when it used to be a game to see if you could count how many were in the air in their approach patterns, holding patterns, taking off, from two airports! But there were none. The days that followed, people were trying to figure out what to do, as if the next step had been taken away and we did not know where to put our feet. The hotel guest left one by one and the skeleton of a hotel was all that remained. Had plenty of time to catch up on paperwork, but how could we, we were stilled glued to the somber news reporters showing us ?Ground Zero, the Pentagon, and a beautiful country side covered in smoke and debris. We had fewer guests, and needed fewer employees. Some people in our nation, continued to work in their everyday affairs, months went by, and our guests were still not coming. And if they did, they drove, they were not flying. Travel funds in large companies, were gone! I wondered how many smaller companies, didn?t make it. The economy usually takes 3 months to affect the hotel industry whether it is going up or going down. It struck us as quickly as the planes hit our nation. I wonder, when it will come back like it was before. Even ?Before? has a different meaning now. One year later, it has not. I wonder how many died, that worked in the hotels, the restaurants and snack shops in the World Trade Center. Have they been forgotten? The people who provided ?Service? to those who worked in big fancy offices, the ones that brought their morning coffee or announced the daily special, or made their beds, with a smile? Dallas is also full of homeless, standing on street corners. I kept my eye on 2 in particular, that were truly, ?Homeless?. People were so busy giving to our brothers and sisters left to deal with their tragedies, the homeless received less and less. Their worlds were forever changed long ago. What plane flew into their lives then, that changed their worlds. I fed them when not many did. I gave them shelter when the ice came. I gave to the Fire Department because I knew from being the niece of a Fire Marshall; they knew how to make it good. And one year later, I left and went home 200 miles away, to a small east Texas town by the lake, to find myself???.. So now as I think about the last year, how could it not effect the smaller out of the way towns that are not apart of the busy Larger Cities, it?s were some of us went to find what was really important, that?s how! I was lied to about how much time would be cut from my life. I was held, even though a model prisoner and was denied an explanation of why I was denied good time.I was in the second half of my persecution (political) when the "cowards" sacrificed themselves. In New York, two large planes carrying passengers hit both the North and South World Trade Centers. In Washington D.C., another plane hit the Pentagon. Meanwhile, a fourth plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This day changed the date September 11 from just another day on the calendar, to America?s most tragic day. This horrific day changed the lives of just about every American. Personally, I have been extremely lucky. More than half of my family lives in New York. A close friend of my family, Steve Gurshbacke, was a janitor in the World Trade Centers. That day he was supposed to be working, but for some reason he sent another person instead. My brother?s friend?s sister was supposed to be working as a flight attendant in one of the planes that crashed. But, for the first time since she had worked at the Airline, she was called off. Lastly, my aunt?s mother and stepfather lives and worked about a block away from the Twin Towers. They got out unharmed and watched as their home was crushed by the impact of two steel building bearing down on the house. My family and I have learned, as I?m sure many Americans have as well, to be more appreciative of my family and friends. I have learned not to take my freedom and county for granted and to enjoy the things I have. My actions and words have greatly changed. I am now much more aware of current events. I am in touch with my family in New York a lot more. My words have changed because I will never say ?I hate you? to my brothers. Instead I end every night by saying ?I love you? to my brothers as well as my parents. I try to pay attention if I hear the national anthem. Also, in the morning during the ?Pledge of Allegiance?, I listen to the words, and try to understand what they mean. I have become a more loving and caring person since 9/11. America has changed greatly since the terrorist attacks. We all have become more patriotic and loyal to our country. Around where I live, almost every house, including my own, had a flag on their house. The flag is now not only a pretty piece of fabric, but a symbol of our great nation. Yet, even with all the patriotism some people felt anger towards all Muslims, even though there was only a small fraction of them who were following bin Laden. Still, most of the changes America and Americans have gone through have been for the better. September 11 is an unforgettable day for all Americans. It is one of the most tragic days of many people?s lives. The impact has changed the way we think, live and learn. No one will forget the brave firefighters and innocent victims from the four plane crashes in New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C. The college is about ten miles away from Ft. Campbell ARMY base. It is not unusual to see and hear helicopters and airplanes flying over campus and on this day there was a very strange silence. I sat glued to the television watching all of the events unfold. I couldn't believe my eyes. I think I called everyone I knew to tell them how much I loved them. I wanted to go home and be with my family because I was scared. I was even more frightened because the ARMY base was so close, crazy things were running through my mind like would they attack here, after all Ft. We had been in school for about two hours when word got out to some students about the attacks to the World Trade Centers and the Pentagon. Finally around 10 a.m. the principal came on the intercom and confirmed the horrible attacks. At that moment, everyone?s heart started beating at a million beats per second and emotion filled the classrooms. No one knew what was to happen next. Everyone wanted to know the full story of the world going on outside of school, but the teachers would not let us watch the news. When school finally ended after what seemed to be an eternity, all students raced home on the middle school buses to be with there family and watch what was taking place around us. Devastation filled the streets around the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, as the news showed people running and crying in panic. It was awful seeing people struggle to move and to get medical aid. Rubble and smoke consumed much of New York City. Later on that night President Bush came on t.v. to give a speech. Even though I didn?t know much about what he was saying, it made me feel good that actions were already being taken against the people guilty of the most deadly terrorist attack. To this day, Americans have united together and are as strong as we ever have been to fight terrorism. September 11, 2003 has made me realize that you shouldn?t take things for granted in life because in an instant they could be taken away. He gave the briefest of details, then I zoomed to the office to let the staff know. "This couldn't be true -- I better see on the TV before I let anyone else know," I thought to myself. But it was horribly real. As the back of the library began to fill with faculty, jaws dropped and everyone was silent as the news replayed the scene over and over. Then at 8:30, I had to try to teach kindergarten students. As I looked at their innocent, happy faces filling the reading room, I didn't know how I was going to teach. I felt so fearful and upset. I just wanted to watch TV. They had no idea of the event and I had to just go on. A collective moan came from the back of the library when the second tower went down, yet the kids were unaware. Tears came to my eyes and I could not leave my kids. That entire day was the most difficult teaching day I've ever had. The television in the back of the library stayed on for at least a solid week; faculty ate lunch there to see news, lean on each other, ask "Why?", and cry. They would then gather their composure, go forward, and teach the kids, as the rest of America has done. We were listening to the radio when it was announced that an airplane had hit the Twin Towers. We thought at first that a plane had just had an accident. Then came the second announcement. The sadness I felt. The disbelief that this was happening. I thought the world was coming to an end. The anger I felt that someone could do this to innoncent people. I just wanted to go home and be with my kids. But I had to finish out the day. They were letting some schools out early that day. Lucky my sons wasn't one of them since I had to work. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I work at the George Foster Peabody Awards at the University of Georgia, and one of my co-worker's daughter lives in New York. She called him and told him that a plane had crashed into the World Trade Center, so we turned on the TV in the office. There was a small group of us watching the TV, and for some reason I started thinking about what I had seen on the BBC America station a couple of nights before--that the leader of the Northern Alliance had been assassinated. Of course, I didn't really know anything about the Northern Alliance or the Taliban at the time, but I remembered the name of Osama Bin Laden from the news, and I told everybody in the room that I bet it was a terrorist attack, backed by Osama Bin Laden. Somebody said, "you don't know that," but it's like I just did. I remember calling my mom and telling her about the plane, and while I was talking to her the second plane hit the second tower. I said, "Oh, My God," and it was apparent that something was definitely wrong. My mom said something about feeling sorry for the people on the plane, too, and at the time, from looking at the TV, it looked like a prop plane, and I told her that I didn't think it was that kind of plane (jet). We were supposed to have a meeting that morning, and one of the participants came in and started talking like it was business as usual. We had turned the volume down and my back was to the TV, but 20 minutes or so later, my boss, who was facing the TV said, "a plane has hit the Pentagon. This meeting is over." We sat through the day and watched the TV in stunned disbelief and when the towers fell, it seemed like they fell in slow motion. It seemed like a scene from a movie, I guess it was the shock of it all. When we heard that a plane had crashed in Pennsylvania, I immediately thought that the passengers must have tried to take over the plane from the hijackers and then had lost control. This later turned out to be true. It was so strange that day. It's like I had a sixth sense about what was happening. I was just stunned that anyone could conceive of such a horrible act, and I remember wondering what might happen next. September 11, 2001, is THE day I will remember all my life. I got to work within 5mins and my husband was in the office with the television on. I was in a daze. Like I couldn't really absorb what was happening. My mother called me and my sister called me. My mother was terrified and wanted me to go and get my duaghter from school. My sister and I called each other back and forth each time we heard something new had happened. It was just totally unbelievable. I have had nightmares about being in a house with my children and terrorist coming in and attacking us. In my dreams I was determined to protect my children. Tell us your story: When i got the news that the first Trade Center was hit i was on the phone with a friend and my Aunt beeped in on the 2 way calling. I answered the beep and she said turn the T.V. on NBC. I told my mother what she said and she turned the T.V. on. the sight that i saw i was mortified. I was thinkin to myself " I hope that this isnt an attack on our nation". Then i seen the second tower hit. At that point I started cryin and i was terrified. How could this happen to one of the strongest nations in the world? Thats the one question that still hasn't been answered for me. When I heard about the other two attacks I was with my mother and best friend goin grocery shoppin. We weren't sure if we should go but we had to. When we got there it was all over the radio and that was all we heard on the way there. When we got home we put the T.V. on Nbc again and we watched that for the rest of that week. The attack hit close to me because I know this probably sounds selfish but my birthday is 8 days afetr it happened so you can imagine how that was for me. But what the peoples family went through has no comparison on my life cuz what they went through is so terrible. It should never have happend and it SUCKS!!!!! I had just finished performing 7 days in a row of parties and just the night before I played an event "Blind Wine Tasting and Touring" here in Bethpage. I was very wiredand didn't sleep well the night of the10th.I felt a strange feeling in the air. It happens to me a lot. Anyway, I was tossing and turning and my husband's alarm went off and we heard the news of a plane hitting the Trade Center. We bolted out of bed and sat in front of the TV set and watched the whole thing happen. We were numb. Was this real, Was it a TV movie? My husband is a Port Jefferson Fire Department Volunteer Fireman. He quickley called the fire house. A truck was leaving to go in and help. I remember that day as if it was last week. I was getting ready to go to school when my dad yelled for me to come into the living room. The first tower had been hit by a plane. I didn't really think anything of it until I stood there and watched the second plane it. Nobody was expecting it. I was in a hurry because I was late for school, so we listened to the news the whole time to school. As I got into my classroom the tv was already on. Nobody knew what was going on, that's when the Pentagon got hit. Everyone just stared silently as we watched our nation under attack. This was the United States of America!! Then news came in of the Pensilvania plane crashing. Everyone was in complete shock. We sat there and watched the tv screen as people started jumping out of the highest stories of the twin towers. How bad had it must have been to feel so completely lost that you would jump out of a 100 story building. I remember thinking that the world was ending. Then just as I thought that the worst was over, the first tower collapsed. People were screaming, what would it have been like to be there, in New York, watching as your city fell to pieces. I went straight home after school and watched the news all night long. The numbers were coming in that as many as 15,000 people had lost their lives. Now that it has been a year I still am in shock, how could this have happened to our country? America the beautiful, the land of the free. As I watched the footage once again of what happened one year ago, I still get chills up my spine. I think, I am so lucky to be here in Utah, away from the terror, death and destruction of that day. What about the people who were there? The people who lived through it all, the family members who lost so many loved ones, not only the heros-but all the ordinary good hearted people like you and me who died. I pray for them every night, and I will for the rest of my life. Losing a loved one is hard enough, but to lose someone for no reason--to see them one minute then the next watching on tv as they die. America is strong, but the people of New York are stronger. They keep their heads held up high, knowing that their father, mother, brother, sister, co-worker, child, etc. died serving America. It is hard to think that more than 3000 good people lost their lives that day. They will always be remembered. Maybe not thier faces, or their names, but their spirits. I found a website that listed every name of everyperson who was murdered on that day. I printed it out to keep as a rememberence-not just for me, but for my child and their children. They may not understand what it was like, they may not be able to concieve 3000 people, I think showing them the list of people will make them understand more clearly. It will show them that the people who died were real people, true Americans. A day like this will never be forgotten, it must not be forgotten. We need to keep it in our minds and in our hearts. We need to remember that everyone has a soul. Be nicer to our fellow Americans, smile more, love more. We owe it to those that so tradjectly lost their lives. I love America. As September 11, 2002 came and I saw all of the memorials and listened to everyones stories, I could not keep myself from tearing up. No I did not know anyone who died, but I am an American just like everyone else. In Sandy there was a memorial-- 3012 American Flags and a flag for every other country that lost a person. As I walked through this "cemetary" I couldn't help but think that every one of these flags was a person, the enormity of it was too much. 3000 people, how could someone do that? On one of the music stations they had a child who had lost their dad talking, she said, if only those terrorists could have sat down and talked to my dad, they would see what a good person he was and they would have never done this to him. My heart wept for that child and every other child that has to grow up parentless. May thy have strength and comfort in this time of need. America loves you, and everyone who lost a loved one. May we remember who we are, AMERICANS, let freedom ring and peace prevail, Good will always conquer Evil. America is the good and we will win this war! Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11, 2001 was my first day of interning on Capitol Hill for Senator Peter Fitzgerald. I rode down to Capitol Hill from my school, American University, in the AUTO van with several of my friends who were all headed to internships downtown as well. Once there, I had a few minutes to burn, so I headed down to the coffee shop in the basement of the Dirkson building to get some breakfast. As I got into line for a bagel I passed a television and at first I didn?t even notice what was on the screen. After a few minutes, I realized that it was a live picture of the World Trade Center in New York City and it was on fire. The news correspondent was saying that a few minutes ago, a plane had flown directly into one of the towers. Nobody knew if it had been an accident or a deliberate action. I watched for a few more minutes, thinking that it must have been an accident and how sorry I was for all the people involved. A plane landing at one of the New York airports must have flown off course and hit the building. I moved ahead in line to get my bagel and promptly forgot about the plane crash. I was starting to feel nervous about starting my internship. Several minutes later I found myself sitting in the newly painted reception area of Senator Fitzgerald?s office, waiting for the intern coordinator. I watched television while I waited for her to come out. The picture on the screen was still of the WTC, but this time, both of the towers were burning. Staffers began to gather around the television and raised the possibility that this might be a deliberate attack on the United States and that being in a federal building might not be very safe. Some said that it might be wise to evacuate the building, just in case something else happened. Most of the staff immediately dismissed the possibility that anything would happen in Washington and everyone returned to their work. Fifteen minutes later, the intern coordinator came out and took me on a quick tour of the office. We ended up in the mailroom and she had just settled me down with a pile of letters to open when one of the staff members sitting near me screamed and pointed towards the television sitting on top of a file cabinet. The Pentagon had been hit. Nobody knew what we should do, if anything. The office manager called the Capitol Police and informed them that the Pentagon was on fire (as if they didn?t know). The idea of evacuating the building was raised once again by some of the staff, but most people decided against it. Just then, CNN starting reporting that both the White House and State Department had been hit as well. Those rumors later turned out to be untrue, but at that moment my concern was not for myself, but for my friends who were interning at both those places this morning. ?Please,? I thought. ?Let them be okay.? I returned to my letters, but I never got any farther than slitting the first envelope. Just then, a Capitol Police officer ran through the door behind my desk yelling, ?Everyone get out NOW! The city is under attack! Move!? At that point, things started to happen fast. Doors began to slam and then lock all around me and I heard someone yelling to Andrew (the mail guy) to make sure that I got out safely. I barely had time to grab my bag before Andrew dragged me out the door with him and into the crowded hallway. Once I was outside the scene didn?t get any better. All of Capitol Hill seemed to be streaming out of the buildings and the crowds were so thick I could barely walk. Cars were trying to exit the parking lot but the streets were so full of people that they couldn?t move. Black smoke was rising from the direction of the Pentagon and the crowd seemed to be growing more hysterical by the minute. I, like everyone else, pulled out my cell phone, but there was no signal. ?Figures,? I thought to myself. ?I bought this for an emergency and now that there is one it doesn?t even work.? I began to walk towards Union Station to catch the Metro home. When I got there I decided that it might be a good idea to call my mother and let her know I was okay. I headed straight for the pay phones and after several unsuccessful attempts, managed to get through to her voice mail and left a message telling her that I was safe and headed back to campus. I?d no sooner hung up the phone than Union Station was evacuated. A policeman saw me and immediately ordered me to leave. As I was exiting the building, I saw a line forming for taxies. I figured that other than walking, this might be the only way I was getting home, so I headed over to join the line. Just as I reached the end, I heard someone call my name. It was Jen, one of the receptionists in Fitzgerald?s office who I?d met earlier that morning. She was standing with her boyfriend, Chad, who also worked on Capitol Hill. As it turned out, we were all heading in the same direction, so we decided to split a cab. While we stood in line, we watched the smoke and flames shoot up from the direction of the Pentagon, clearly visible against the blue sky. I couldn?t help thinking how surreal the entire scene was; it was such a beautiful morning and the smoke and flames seemed completely out of place. Just as Jen, Chad, and I reached the head of the line, the police ordered the entire area around the Capitol evacuated, including the outside of Union Station. All the taxies drove away and hundreds of people were left standing there. As the three of us stood there wondering how we were going to get home, a policeman started directing everyone away from the train station and towards the downtown area. There was no choice but to follow the crowd, even though we really weren?t sure where we were going to end up. We walked for the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon. At one point we stopped at a store that had a television in the window. There we watched the second of the two World Trade Center towers fall to the ground in a pile of smoke and dust. For the first time that morning, the full impact of what had happened hit me. Everyone in the crowd started to cry, but there was no time to dwell on what had happened. The sidewalks were jammed with pedestrians and the streets were in gridlock; everyone was trying to get out of the city but there wasn?t anywhere to move. As we made our way into the northwest part of the city we passed the embassies, most of which were heavily guarded now. Police cars and fire engines from surrounding areas were attempting to wind their way downtown to the Pentagon and overhead we could see helicopters flying in from all directions. When we reached Adams Morgan we stood still for a moment and looked down towards the cloud of smoke rising from below, taking the entire situation in. Eventually, the three of us found a restaurant that was open and serving food, so we decided to stop and have lunch as long as we had the chance. After eating we checked out the status of the Metro and the red line was indeed up and running, at least to where I needed to go. Although I had no desire to go underground at the moment, I decided to risk it and took the most nerve-wracking Metro ride of my life back to campus, arriving back a full 6 hours after being evacuated from Capitol Hill that morning. I had been sick and stayed home the day before and I wasn't really feeling much better so my parents let me stay home from school. Since I was up I decided to go eat breakfast and come back upstairs to my room and listen to the radio like I had done the last 9 years that I had been living in Leesburg. As time passed I kept looking out the window and thinking how nice of a day it was, yet for some reason I just felt odd about the day. It might have been because I was sick, but something just felt off. Around 9AM, when the radio program that I listen to would have normally been going off the air, there was a break in the commercial and it returned to the program. They were saying that a plane had crashed into one of the World Trade towers. At first, like many people I would imagine, I thought that it was a small plane and it wasn't going to be a big thing. About that time my mom, who was downstairs watching TV, called me down and told me what had happened. I told her that I knew about it already. At that same moment I was watching the TV and I saw the second plane crash into the other tower live. The first thing that I noticed was it was a commercial jet-liner and that casualties would have been horrific. I couldn't believe what I was seeing on TV. After the initial shock had worn off from the first two planes was about the time that the news had reported an explosion at the Pentagon. Immediately I knew that it couldn't just be coincidence. I was afraid to be where I was in relation to Washington, DC. I kept looking out the window for planes flying overhead since the FAA had grounded all other commercial flights. I could only imagine what the situation was like at school. Later, after the towers collapsed I knew that everyone inside those buildings was dead. For some reason I wasn't as upset as I should have been by what had happened, I just felt desensitized from seeing and hearing about the seemingly daily terrorist activities in Israel and Palestine and in the Phillipines. I know I didn't mention anything about the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, but thats only because I don't know enough about what happened except that the passengers on board were pretty courageous and attempted to subdue the hijackers. Now, a few days from the second anniversary of 9-11, I feel the same as I did when it happened, just more aware of things going on in the world besides the sometimes trivial and meaningless activities that go on in America.
