When i walk into my History teachers classroom, i see the sudents are deathly quiet watching the T.V. When i enter i realize that something bad has happened. I hear the repoirter on the tv talking about a plane crash. and i thought it might not be that much of a big deal. I sit in my seat, and watch with the rest of my classmates. Then the screen switches to this vision of a large building with smoke coming out of it and surrouding it. I look over at my friend, and cant believe this is happening. The more i watch i gradually find out that the plane crash wasnt on the ground, but that some plane has crashed into a major building in new york city. I begin to image whta it must have been like for the passengers on the aircraft. Knowing they were about to die, and in turn help to kill others. On the screen they kept haunting us by showing us over and over what must have happened, and the footage they had on it all. It was the most horrible thing i had seen at the time. Then it happened. We all of a sudden get the news broadcaster projecting the fact that there is another plane sighted and then BOOM! We watch in dismay as the second tower got hit. My teacher makes us do some work for a while, and at the end of class we turn the t.v. back on. We find out that the tower has crashed, we watch it all crash and burn to the ground, and a mass of dust and rubble go crashing all over the city as if a tidal wave of smoke. That again was a huge shock. a few of my classmates go running from the room, they have family that lives in new york, and they wonder if they are going to be ok or not. My reaction was one of bewilderment, shock, and of confusion. I didnt know what to think or what to do when the second tower crashed i was scared. When i got home i watched the T.V, the news, and reports. We could see the people accually jumping out of the buildings, we could see them on the t.v. it was horrible, we had tellephone conversations of family memeber able to call their loved ones minutes before death on the air planes. I began to cry. I remember thinking how horrible this is. This is an act of war, and we will catch who is responsible for it. My main thoghts were those of the famies who were effected directly, who were unsure if their loved ones were going to come home that night or not. In my opinion, there hasnt been anything this horrible in our past since pearl harbor attack. It was a class of 10th graders; the subject for them is World History. The end of the previous week, I had been talking of the beginnings of Islam. A fellow teacher came to my door to tell me that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers; my classroom TV suddenly came on, and we saw the second plane hit. Some of my students acted like this was a movie or TV show; I said, "Folks, this is not something being done by some kind of special effects. This is really happening now -- right now, people are dying up there in New York. Don't think this is just for your entertainment -- this is real." I had the TV turned off so they could take a short test. When they finished, we turned it back on -- and I was so shocked then -- I said "Oh, my goodness!! That doesn't look like New York, it looks like the Pentagon.!" And a voice started speaking, saying we were looking at one wing of the Pentagon. A student teacher down the hall, who was about to retire from the Air Force and begin teaching, told us "I was most recently assigned, before coming to Keesler (Air Force Base) to the Pentagon; that plane has plowed into the area that is Army HQ. I have many friends there." And he was, of course, very upset. Throughout the day, both students and teachers were extremely upset, and my idealistic teenagers kept saying: "But how can this be happening? Here -- in the U.S. ?" Lost and not awake, it takes me several minutes to understand what is going on. I sit there on the floor watching, and talking to her for several minutes before hanging up. No sooner did I have the reciever down, and the phone rings agian. Its a good friend of mine calling me to see if I know. I talk to her a few minutes, and then hang up the phone agian, and I sit there looking at the TV, and wondering WHY? What is happening. What do I do now. You see, I was in the in Middle of moving 5 states away to Pennsylvania. My truckload of all my household stuff had left on Monday, this was Tuesday, and I was to fly out on Wednesday. There I sat on the living room floor, with a phone, a 6 inch black and white TV, my suitcase, and a cooler. Sitting there knowing that the electricity would be shut off in a few hours, not knowing if and when I would be leaving. I ended up having to stay at a motel right by the airport, because I didnt know when I was going to get to leave, if ever. After several flight cancelations, and switching airlines, I got to fly out on Friday morning, and got to my new home around Midnight that night. The next morning I got a call that the moving truck was ready for deleivery. The truck almost had to wait for me. Now after a year I am glad I am here, and I made it safely. It will always be easy to remember when I moved here, certainly not a date to be forgotten. I drove him to school with his 'Bob the Builder' lunchbox and left him with the teachers. That was tough. I got in the car and started it. The radio announcer said that a plane had hit the WTC. I thought that it was just a bad crash. i drove home. Then the second plane hit. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: What a time to start working at a newspaper. I'd only been at the Clovis News Journal a few days. Although hired as an editorial assistant I found myself wearing many hats. I recall vividly listening to the radio in our car as my wife and I pulled up to the newspaper office - she was dropping me off. The report we heard was that a small private plane had crashed into one of the World Trade towers. Seemed like significant news but nothing horrific. In just the few minutes that it took for me to get from my car to the newsroom though - the world changed. Forever. The newsroom contained no activity - very unusual for a Tuesday morning. All of my colleagues were huddled motionless around the small color television in the corner of the newsroom watching and listening as the events unfolded. I joined their shock and dismay - my stomach got nauseated. Soon the telephones starting ringing - the citizens of Clovis were making sure that the newspaper knew what was going on. One of the telephone calls reported that traffic going into nearby Cannon Air Force Base was backed up for miles - they had closed the gate to the base as a result of the attack on America. The editor considered that newsworthy and thought a picture of the traffic would make good copy. Time for me to put on a new hat. I got the order "go out to the base and take the pictures - make it quick!". My first photo shoot for a newspaper - I should have been thrilled but my mind and stomach were still churning. I had stood on the top of one of those towers back in the late 80's. I actually lived in the shadows of those towers for about six months while living on Governor's Island right off the tip of Manhattan - I had been in the Coast Guard. I felt violated even though I was 2000 miles from New York City. As I arrived at the base the traffic had dropped down to just a few hundred yards from the main gate - not very photographic. I was determined to do my job though. After parking my car about a half a mile from the gate to the base I walked quickly toward it carrying a very large and very expensive digital camera. It wasn't mine. As I started to take pictures of the traffic making it's way slowly toward the gate and of the Air Force Security Police personnel decked in full battle gear - the reality of what had happened began to sink in. Then reality really hit me when all of a sudden I was descended upon by a half-dozen armed uniformed military policemen. It seems that I looked awful suspicious standing there taking pictures - I might be a terrorist. My heart raced and my nerves jumped as the questioning began and the thought of them confiscating a $3000 camera that did not belong to me made me even more nervous. Finally, after some dialogue I was allowed to leave the premises intact and with the camera. I shook all the back to town. My picture made it to the front page and the Associated Press picked it up and carried it nationally. Quite a feat for my first news photograph. The thrill though just wasn't there. What was there was a bag of very mixed emotions. Sadness, anger, frustration, to name a few. Looking back I remember thinking to myself while being accosted by those military policemen - freedom, ours - will now be challenged more than ever. And not just by the enemy. When I returned to the office, my fellow workers were just standing there glued to the radio. They had the strangeous look on their face. I asked what was going on and as I stood next to them and heard the news, I just could not believe it. We all went over to the Doctor's Lounge where that was a teleivison set and watched in horror as they replayed the first plane crashing into the North Tower. There are no words to express my feelings as I thought about all those people who were and would be killed in this unspeakable incident. Then - the second plane crashed. My heart went into my stomach. We all stood there crying softly to ourselves, trying to embrace this moment as though it was just a dream and that we would all come back to reality and it would be over. But that was not to be. For months I have been glued to the TV, along with my husband who has taken this so personally that now I worry about the real effect it has had on him. Today on the first anniversary, I still don't want to believe it happened but I know I need to deal with it. I hope that the world will know the grief Americans have gone through over the last year. I know that most nations grieve with us and for us. When future generations read this, please know that in my 55 years living, I have never witnessed anything so hurtful as this. Tell us your story: My husband and I had arrived several hours early to the Denver, CO airport for our flight to return home to Dayton, OH from going to visit our niece in Denver. Sharon, our niece, had mentioned that there was a great place to have breakfast at the Denver airport and watch the news near our concourse. We arrived early enough to try for the earlier flight back to Dayton. When we inquired, we were advised that yes, we could take the ealier flight out of Denver, but would still have to take our chances in Chicago, and most likely would be there waiting all day. We opted to just go and have breakfast. While having breakfast at the grill at the Denver airport, the breaking news came on announcing that a plane had hit the trade center. Comments were that it was probably a small plane. My husband said from the pictures, that he did not think that it was a small plane. As we watched the terrible thing, the next plane hit. We were stunned! I felt horror for the people. After a few minutes we decided to check on our flights, I noticed that our gate had been moved. I became concerned and suggestion instead of going to the new gate, we go to the customer service station. While waiting in line, an announcement came over advising that all flights were being delayed for seven hours. I told my husband, we are leaving the airport, we were not staying for seven hours. We rebooked our flights for the next day. My worry was other terrorist attacks! We could not get a car rental, all booked. We called my niece, and she came right over, she was the last car let on the airport. By the time she came, they had announced that the airport was closing and all bags would be held. Luckily, we were able to get out before it closed. Others had to wait for buses to take them to town and then disperse from there. We called home to let family know we were safe and not on a plane, before we left the airport. People having cell phones really helped in communications, soon all pay phones, had lines. After Sharon picked us up, we went to here house. We watched the news in horror for the next several days, unable to get a flight or car rental. We were stranded in Denver until Thursday and drove home arriving on Friday. We saw many cars filled with people as we crossed I-70 from Denver to Dayton. It was his mother calling to tell us to turn on the TV. I couldn't believe what I was looking at. It was like watching a movie. My friend, Natasha, worked on the 97th floor of tower 1. I tried getting a hold of her, but no answer. I didn't stop trying until I saw the towers fall. My heart sank into my stomach and I knew she was gone. The only thing I could feel at the time was anger and hate. Natasha was a beautiful woman who had everything going for her. Moving to New York was a huge deal for her. She had always wanted to live and work in the big apple. I miss her terribly, and cannot believe that 3 years have gone by since the attack. I along with several collegues were attending a software class on that fateful day. We had not taken a break all morning and finally broke for lunch about 1:00PM. One of the first persons out the door went downstairs in the building we were in to the restuarant we had seen on our way to class. She noticed everyone around standing in front of a barber shop watching televison. When she saw what had happened, she rushed back to the class to inform everyone. Of course we were all first in diselief, then awestruck. I had my cell phone with me and called my wife in Florida. She related to me all the happenings of the morning. I can remember not wanting to go to school that day. I just had a bad feeling about school, I had a feeling that I was going to get into an argument or something like that. I ended up going anyway. I can remember being in my first hour class, spanish, a class I hate, and I couldn't wait to go to sociology, second hour. Well when the bell rang, I rememeber going downstairs cause that's where my locker is, and I felt this weird presence in the halls. It was amazingly quiet. Tell us your story: I had just finished my shift as a Firefighter/Paramedic and was preparing to leave and go up to Fire Admin. to get fitted for new uniforms. As I came into the kitchen one of the Lt.s said that a plance had hit one of the twin towers. I watched for a few mins. thinking it was an accident then proceded to go to the Admin. office. Upon arriving there, their TV was on and I witnessed the second plane hitting the second tower. I lost my breath for a minute and thought "This is unbelievable". On my way home I heard about the Pentagon being hit and by that time I was in a panic. I got home and woke my husband up and said to him "The world is falling apart and you are sleeping. Get up, I need you" We remained glued to the TV all day and when we went to work that night (in a restaurant) we had the television on. I don't believe we turned it off for at least a week. Doing what I do for a living,it really affected my husband and I. You never think of bad things happening until after they do. And when we go to a fire, our first responsibility is to save lives so we would have been running in the twin towers. It is just automatic. I thought war had broken out in the middle east or there was a bombing at a nuclear power plant. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine what had taken place in New York, Pennsylvania and Washinton DC. During this time, I was also dealing with my own shock, I had learned I was pregnant that morning before I turned on the TV. To make things even more interesting, my daughter's father was an active duty solider in the Army and had gone on 30 minute recall and was probably leaving the Country. That day was one I will NEVER forget. Once things had set in and I learned exactly what had happened back East, my heart sank. I remember crying for all of the people who had been lost and for their families. I never dreamed during my life that we could have been attacked like that and my worst nightmare had been broadcasted on TV. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th, I was an attorney on my way to Nassau County Supreme Court on Long Island. I left my hom in Bronxville, unaware of what had happened downtown. My radio in my car was not working and the first notice I had that the WTC had been attacked was seeing it burn as I crossed the Throgs Neck Bridge. The courthouse was soon closed after I arrived. All bridges were closed. I telephoned my law firm and was advised to return to our office in White Plains right away. I called my national guard unit in the Bronx and was advised we were mobilized by order of the governor. I had to show my military ID to get across the bridges to return to my home to change into military attire and gather my belongings. I had difficulty contacting my wife that morning. As we are originally from Mississippi, she had returned there, as I had plans to soon follow. After assuring her I was safe, the most dreadful news was to tell her I was going to the site of the attack. As a desert storm veteran from active duty, I never anticipated we would be attacked on American soil. My experience from Desert Storm left me with mixed emotions toward the attack at the WTC. Most soldiers were scared and did not know what to expect when we arrived. I assured them as best I could as their officer and went to work coordinating their positions with police. The most horrific site awaited us at the south tower upon our arrival. The magnitude of the attack was beyond what most of the onlookers and civilians in the area could comprehend. The national guard supplemented the police around the perimeter of Manhattan for several weeks. These soldiers are often overlooked and not mentioned as they did not play a part in the actual rescue effort. I commend each and every soldier who was called that day with me to do their job, although it was not one they were trained for. As the war on terror is almost a year old, never forget what a soldier gives back to his country and in turn, they never asks for thanks in return. I remember thinking 'wow, how sad - maybe the pilot had a heart attack or something. Those poor people - how tragic.' I went to tell some co-workers and we began listening to the radio. I called my husband and we were discussing it, when he said "holy shit, another one flew into the other tower!" Then he said "This is War. They're out to get us." I remember thinking "Who? What? Why?" I just couldn't comprehend that someone would deliberately fly a plane into a building. I didn't understand who would do this to us and why. Our whole company then went into a conference room to watch all of this happening on TV. Then the pentagon was hit. Then another plane crashed in Pennsylvania. God, what was happening? I left the conference room crying. Sobbing. Came to my office and sat down. Then I looked out my office window, it was a beautiful day, not a cloud in the sky and I was 9 months pregnant with my second child. I was to have her by c-section on 9/13/01 so 9/11 was to be my last day at work. Then it hit me - how could it be such a beautiful day, and there be so much chaos/tragedy in another part of the country. Why was this happening? Who could be so evil to do this to us? Oh my God I'm going to bring a child into this cruel, cruel world. So many thoughts ran through my mind. The images kept going through my head - I felt so much sadness for all of the mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, friends that were lost. I can't even put into words what I was feeling. I left work, went to see my husband - then went and picked up my 1 1/2 year old son at daycare. God how I held him and cried, and thanked the Lord that he was in my arms. And thought 'how many kids are not going to be able to hug their mommy or daddy tonight?' I felt lucky to be able to hold my son and hug my husband. My daughter was born on 09/13/01 at 9:28am. Looking at her made me realize how lucky I am. She was truly the brightest light in such a dark time. Seeing her so little, fragile - innocent. She is truly a little miracle. My volume was down so i couldn't hear what was going on, but I kept seeing this building on fire (not paying it any mind), I rooled back over and went back to sleep. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had a class at 9:35 AM. I have a habit of watching the news in the morning, so I can keep up with current events. I remember turning on CNN and seeing a reporter from NY describing how a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I few minutes later, there was another explosion. The reporter assumed it was the airplane exploding and I assumed it was an accident and went to class. At 11:00 AM I returned from class. My three roommates were huddled on the couch, one sobbing and the other two just staring. They told me that two planes had hit the World Trade Center and they had fallen. I found out about the Pentagon and the crash in Shanksville. We were frightened. We were 45 minutes from D.C., 20 minutes from the Pennsylvania state line. We had friends who worked at the Capitol Building and friends who worked in New York. We didn't know how they were or what was going on. I remember calling my parents and asking what to do. We live in a small town, secluded by mountains. My parents said that if anything else happened, I was to come home and bring as many of my friends as I could. It was scary. We didn't know what to do. We just sat and watched the same images of the towers falling over and over and over....I'll never forget that dust cloud rolling down the street. We also went to a local church to give blood. They took our names and turned us away. They were running out of blood bags. Our local FBI office was blocked-off. There were jets flying overhead constantly. I never thought the sound of jets would be comforting, but on that day, it was the most wonderful sound in the world. It meant that we were being watched out for. I remember honking as I passed local firefighters and waving when I saw police officers. I never really appreciated these public service workers until September 11, 2001. I still honk when I see a fire truck passing by. I guess all I can really say is that I'll never forget what I was doing or where I was or who I was with. My mom can remember where she was when J.F.K. was shot; I can remember where I was when our world turned upside down and I'll never, ever be the same. God Bless America. Keep us free. Keep us safe. I remember watching it as it unfolded on the news the first plane hitting the tower and than the second and the news of a third plane going down in Pennsylvania. I thought at first it was all a dream and that I was going to wake up. No government would dare do this sort of thing to the United States were to powerful and to strong and than I remembered Pearl Harbor. My brother travels alot so I even felt compelled to call him in California to make sure he was O.K. and not in New York. When it was brought up as an act of terrorism I realized this would only be the start of what was to come. Many lives were lost that fatefull day but we discovered how many heros we had, how people of all walks of life, all races, all ethnic orgins came to the aide of the person standing next to them and how each of us opened our hearts to those left behind in this tragic incident. I felt like I needed to do something so I prayed that everyone would be found be it dead or alive. Now it is one year to the day that this tragic incident that will live in infany occured and I find my thoughts going out to what is happening now and how we are handling the whole situation. President Bush has done a good job of trying to stamp out terrorism wether he is right or wrong on how he is doing it does not matter, what matters is he is doing it. But we must all remember what President Roosevelt said and quote "so, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself --- nameless,unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance". We should all remember that. We must not be afraid and we must stand together as one to show the world we still carry the biggest stick and we will use it if necessary. Lady Liberty still stands tall and proud as she always has. People stand stronger and taller and we look out a little bit more for our neighbor and fellow man on the street. September 11, 2001 made us stronger, it made us stand a little taller and it made us rethink how much we have to loose. But the terrorists that day were unable to take away our self respect, our freedom and our strength. We did stumble but we didn't fall, we caught ourselves and now we are standing taller and prouder than before. Our president is talking about going to war. Many have said it is wrong and yes it is as war never cures anything but if we must enter into a war to stamp out terrorism and those behind it let it be on their soil not on ours. Let us show them how strong we are and how we will not accept terrorism and those who terrorists hide behind. Our President must be willing to go all the way to do this which means sending the troops over seas but it also means not supporting them after it is over with. We were attacked first we should never rebuild what we will destroy if we must go to war. We are a nation of strong men and women who are willing to lay down their own lives so we can continue to live in a place where we do not have to be afraid, where terrorism is not tolerated and where every man woman and child should feel safe in their own homes. We call ourselves Americans a proud people, a free people but what we really our comes from within. The United States of America where we live under one flag. If you look at the words United States of America it says it all. We as a people are United, we are united against terrorism and those who back terrorists. States is just that our country is made up of states like our people are made up of differnt backgrounds. America land of the free, home of the brave, where each and everyone of us live, where we can express ourselves any way we want as long as it is not hurting those around us. We are a strong nation a proud nation, we are the melting pot of the world where those who want to live can live without persecution. September 11th changed a lot of things including the fact that it made us a stronger nation now more than ever. We are no longer divided by skin color or ethnic or religious background we are one people willing to defend our country and standing up for what is right. Terrorism must be stomped out at any cost and the men and women of our armed services are willing to do that. We are a nation under God and indivisble. Terrorists will not divide us nor will they defeat us. We will stand proud today, tommorrow and forever and in closing we must remeber 9/11/2001. When you think of the day it is ironic 911 the same numbers we as Americans can call when in trouble. May this never happen again and May God Bless each and every one of us, believers and non believers alike. Our brave policemen, fireman, E.M.T'S and volunteers. I Was at home, 9-11-01, my son and daughter were with me, I remember how beautiful the day was. My husband called from MS. and told us to turn on the t.v. I was actually brought to my knees as i saw the second plane fly into the south tower.I could hardley see through my tears as we watched, horrified as the mighty towers collapsed! My children and I prayed for our country, the victims, and families. All day we held a vigil in front of out t.v. hoping for any info.on survivors.We immediately bought an American flag, and have proudly flown it daily for it for 9-11-01. I heard something on the radio about what was going on in new york and turned it off because i honestly thought it was someones idea of a really bad joke to be saying something like that. When we arrived at my daughters school in galveston the first thing that the teachers asked was about the traffic in houston. i thought it was kinda odd but then they explained that what i heard was not only not a bad joke but in fact it was true. they had warned the people of houston that they could be next. and everyone was literally running for their lives. i was in shock. i couldnt believe that something like that had happened here. on our way back home to Kansas we drove through oklahoma city and thought that it was appropriate to stop at the memorial their and pray for alll the lives lost then and on september 11. it was the single most profoundly moving moment of my entire life.
