It will be imprinted in all our minds and all our hearts from now until forever. That tragic day has left a mark on the whole country if not the whole world. That day will be remembered as the day the Twin Towers and the Pentagon were attacked by two high-jacked passenger planes. The day that the terrorists finally found their way into our own airplanes. And in a few hours would run them into our own buildings and change our lives forever. The day of tragedy and horror. The 9-11 incidents will not be forgotten. It has changed the way many people think including my friends, my family and I. I think that everyone now has a little more pride because they are an American. I know now what it means to be an American. My friends and I have sent in money for the victims and their families on 9-11 . When I got home the day it happened, our whole family sat and watched the horrifying scenes play back on the T.V. over and over again. It made me angry and I found out the next day in school that a lot of people were. It has affected my entire generation and we will always remember that day. 9-11 brought us as a nation together and the whole nation united to help one another. But I still think it is a little sad that it had to come to that. That terrible tragedy was the thing that united our Nation. I?ve seen many people now showing their pride as an American. I?ve seen so many flags and the words ?God Bless America? written everywhere. It is really nice to see and to think that if you needed something someone would be there for you. America has changed so much. And the battle against terrorists who terrorize America will never be over. My life has changed since 9-11. Everyday I wake up having a little more appreciation for my country. I think about the incidents everyday. There is no way you can get the scenes out of your head when you see two planes running into the Twin Towers and thinking there are so many innocent people inside. It has changed my life because it makes me think of all the times when I complain about the little things in life. If I lose something it?s not that big of a deal anymore. It?s not some sort of tragedy. 9-11 was. 9-11 will forever be in my mind. One day when my children or my grandchildren ask me what happened that day I?ll probably be able to tell them exactly where I was (math class) what I was doing and what happened when I got home. I will always remember and so will the rest of the world. 9-11 will live on through history and generations will come to learn about that horrifying day. I don't think that I would have wanted to be at work when this tragedy struck on 9/11/01. I watched in horror and sadness as I saw the events unfold. I never thought that something like this could happen here, but it did. That day, along with the rest of the week, was very difficult, but I had to watch the events on TV so that I could remember this time in history and to hope that many would be found alive. Unfortunately, many were either found dead or never found at all. Today, 9/11/02, has been a day to reflect back on what happened, shed some tears again, and hope that those affected can move forward with their lives. I know that I will never forget what happened but will do whatever I can to help others in need. When I stepped into my classroom I saw my teacher crying, wondering why she might be crying. I was thinking to myself, why? would she be crying. I looked up at the television, to see the newscaster flashing the same report over and over. At first I couldn't figure out what was going on. I was not aware of what really happened until I arrived at work to find everyone thoughout the building huddling around every TV set present. Working where I did, I was use to disasters, but 99.9% are natural, and this was something totally different to the US. The whole morning was a blurr of activity, but I remeber after both towers fell, we had a meeting, and the whole operation shifted gears. I visited the pentagon about and hour after, and was directed to travel to NYC. I drove myself, and an entire entourage of ARC employee's and volunteers to NYC in 3.5 hours. The following 3 weeks are something I have blocked out of memory, few of us received any sleep for almost a week, and the rest is history and something I will never forget. Tell us your story: I was exiting the subway station the morning of September 11th at the Broadway Nassau stop(2 blocks away from 2WTC) and was on my way to begin my work day on the 93rd floor there. As I walked up the subway stairs to Fulton street I could sense something was wrong. The usually bustling street had halted and the heads of pedestrians were bent backwards and their eyes were fixed to the sky. I could hear light sobs comming from a women and asked her what was wrong.. "A plane hit the tower and people are jumping out of the building," she said. Her words were puntuated by the second plane crashing into the South Tower. The sound resonated in my ears. All the pedestrians fled east down Fulton Street towards the water. My feet were still in climbing stair/subway mode (as I was only on street level for appoximately 40 seconds)so I flipped right back around and headed back downstairs towards the train. I was so shooken up I could barely swipe my metro card at the turnstyle. When I made it through I starded screeming at strangers.. 'Don't go upstairs there are bombs up there.' I had no idea what I was saying as I ran down the ramp. I waited for the next uptown train. I got on. It stopped at the Chambers Street World Trade Center stop (right underneath the building) and people got out. I still didn't know what was going on and if I had to go into the office or not. So, I got out at the following stop, Canal Street to have a look. When I got out of the train all the faces were looking South and when I looked South I could feel the beginnings of a lump welling in my throat and my upper lip started to quiver. However, after my wife got out of the shower she woke me saying "Somethings going on in New York. One of the towers is on fire and it looks pretty bad." I got up and went into the living room where I sat on the couch and stared at the t.v. in amazement. My first thoughts were 'how could a fire that big have gotten this out of control?' and then the reporters began speculating that a plane had hit the tower. My wife left for work, and the reports confirmed that it was definately a plane that crashed into the tower. I called my Dad back in Delaware and asked if he had heard. He said that they were talking about it on the radio, but that it probably was no big deal. He assumed like so many did that it was a small twin engine plan that had problems and lost its way. I told him that I was looking at the pictures and there was no way a small plane did that. We disconnected, and shortly after the second plane hit as I was watching. I thought I was seeing things until they did a replay and confirmed that it was a passenger jet. I was on the phone with my parents most of the day, and we all screamed and cried when the towers fell. My wife was sent home early, and we held eachother all night, crying in disbelief. As long as I live I will never forget the way I felt that day, nor will I ever forgive those who committed this shameful criminal act. Tell us your story: I am 100% disabled and my wife called me and told me to turn on the TV, I got it on just in time to see the 2nd plane crash into the TWC. I started to get sick and than angry. I went into my room and cried. I felt helpless seeing all these great people, Firemen, Policemen and others working to save the people. Than the building fell and I knew they were all gone. I wish I could put my hand on the shoulder of each victim, hero and their families who died on 11 Sept. I would like to take their pain and let their suffering end. I do know that all of the people who died that day are with God and we will see them again. We will know why and we will know the courage of people like the ones on Flt 93. May God watch over all of you and guide you. May God give his blessing to the dead and his love to the families. I am so sorry for all of you. I was driving my 3 year old to school and myself to work (at the same school). I didn't really know what happened. During the morning I was scheduled to speak with parents with our diagnostic team. One parent called and I happened to answer the phone. This was around 9:15 a.m.. She was very afraid. She called to say she wasn't sending her child to school that day and then she told me "the united states is being attacked". She gave me scetchy details. I immediately called my husband who was working at a high rise in Chicago, Illinois. I called my younger brother who works at O'hare International Airport but was supposed to go to the Art Institute that day. The thing about 9/11 for me is it was supposed to be this awesome day. My dad had battled many illnesses, rare illnesses and was going to be released from the hospital on 9/14 after an almost 4 month stay. September 11 was his home training program. I remember I kept praying that we would still be able to go to the hospital for the training. I also remember my dad telling me he never thought he'd ever see anything like 9/11, and he was 74 years old and spent 6 years in the airforce! We went to the hospital for the training. Every single parent showed up on time for their conference that day. When I got home every house on my street had their flags out and by 7 p.m. almost every neighbor was at my house. The days that followed were sad, scary, unforgettable. I will always associate those days with my dad's triumph from the hospital. My dad passed away completely unexpectedly on December 21, 2001. Sometimes I think, now he knows all those other people who passed away on 9/11. Tell us your story: i had an appointment at 9 that morning, and as usual, i was early. i arrived at about 8:45 and when i left an hour later, the whole world had changed forever. i remember getting in my car and turning on my favorite radio station and the DJ was sobbing. i thought it was one of those ridiculous morning-radio pranks until i looked around and noticed that people were crying in their cars, driving so slow, stopping in the middle of the street. when i heard the words "one of the world trade towers has just collapsed," i actually got really angry. i thought, if this is a joke, it's a LOUSY one. i never dreamed it could be real. i had been on my yearly visit to new york a few months before and had stood on top of that building, taking in the beauty of steel and water and action, all that i never see in my small town. the world trade center was a FORTRESS; it couldn't fall! i drove home, getting more and more terrified along the way, because no one could have THAT terrible of a sense of humor. i couldn't get my key in the lock since i was shaking so bad. looking back, i'm thankful for those moments of uncertainty. they were the last moments in the life of the person i used to be. when i finally managed to turn on the television, the images i saw literally dropped me to my knees. airplanes and fireballs and bodies falling from the sky, that plume of dust that used to be desks and walls and people... i called my mother, of course. i think we all wanted our mothers on that morning. she was calm, and i was screaming. i could tell by the controlled tone of her voice that she felt what i feared in my heart: the world was ending. she begged me to join her, and i somehow made the ten minute trip despite my tears and terror. you know what saved my sanity that day? i'll never forget this: i was stopped at a light, listening to what everyone in the country was listening to, and i was sobbing. i heard the person beside me honk his horn, and when i looked over, he pointed to his radio. i nodded, and he mouthed, "it's going to be okay, i promise." comfort. we all tried to comfort each other, even perfect strangers stopped at a red light. the rest of my story is pretty much like the rest, except, of course, for those told by the people who were in new york, washington, pennsylvania. i cried some more, then i got angry, and eventually, i got numb. i'm still not over what happened that day. i moved to chicago, and i get nervous when i see low-flying planes or when too many sirens are blaring at once. i wait for the news that it's happened again. i used to be so naive, so innocent. i felt so safe and i didn't even know it. now i'm afraid. Before I could figure out what was happening, I saw a plane fly into one of the twin towers. As I kept listening I figured out what happened and felt so scared because I thought that we were going to be in a war. Then I went to school, and only a few people even knew that something had happened, so I told everyone what I had seen. Then later on my health teacher told us that there had been two other planes, but that only one had hit something. Throughout the day I got more and more frustrated because the teachers wouldn't tell us what was going on and they kept leaving for meetings with the principal, so all the students were very confused. I arrived(as I always do for meetings) about a half hour early. I was about 6 blocks away and trekked off for the walk to WOW...I decided along the way to stop off at a newspaper stand and buy the daily news and a pack of gum. I took my time and was looking at some magazines first because I had plenty of time to get to my meeting and still be early. Somewhere in the area of 8:45am I heard what sounded to me more like a bomb had just gone off(my head was NEVER thinking plane crash) but then I looked up and saw that one of the towers was on fire. I assumed the bomb that I thought I heard had gone off up there. But immediately everyone around me had there eyes trained on the building and I heard some people say that a plane had crashed into the building. Well, I couldn't believe it but still I didn't think it was more than an accidental crash at that point. Little did I know that all hell was about to break loose...After another few minutes I saw people in the street and heard one say that they saw someone jump out of a window. I thought to myself how crazy that was and I couldn't fathom it. I decided right there and then that going to WOW was probably not a good idea so I attemted to call my boss on my cell phone but I couldn't get thru and thought that my phone was just out of range. For some reason, I didn't exactly want to leave either and I watched along with everyone else for a awhile. Then the second plane soon hit and we ALL just took off in different directions trying to get the heck out of there. Within minutes there was black smoke everywhere. I ran as far as I could before getting out of breath and ended up in a small diner/resturant with about 13 other people that were next to me. I couldn't believe any of it or how surreal it was. I was concerned with 2 things: Letting my mom know I was okay(she had only lost her husband, my stepfather the month before) and my sister and 2 friends who all worked in the WTC. Luckily and thankfully, everyone was eventually accounted for and okay. I can only think of one thing to end my story on: Always remember! I work for Arlington & he used to be a SWAT team memeber @ the Pentagon. I'm a cop in Arlington. I had asked him to take our daughter to school because I had a migraine & wanted to try to get rid of it before I went to work that evening. He was home still because his supervisor decided on 9/10 to let the team come in to work @ 1100 hrs-which was considered late for them. Wnen he got back, he woke me. Soon the phone rang & it was a friend (another New Yorker) calling from MD telling him that the Pentagon had just been hit. My finace thought he was joking & told him to stop messing around. His friend told him to turn on the TV & told him the Twin Towers had been hit too. When he turned on the TV, I was numb! I forgot all about my migraine & my fiance was panicing because he never got paged. (Of course all communication was destroyed.) He got dressed & left & I followed soon after. Traffic was a mess. I hit my hazards & took the shoulder until it ran out. Interstate 395N from the mixing bowl (I495 N/S, I95 NY, NJ, Baltimore) to DC was shut down, but the cop posted there let me thru when I showed him my shield. By the time I got to work, I was told to hit the streets & answer calls like I do everyday. But 9/11 was NOT an "everyday" day. I remember the streets being quiet, deserted, it had no life. It seemed like even the bad guys took this particular day off too. We hardly received any calls to run. You could just feel the whole county's numbness. A year later, I still don't watch the news like I used to. Things have gotten "back to normal". I thank God that I didn't lose my fiance that day. He's now w/ another federal agency. I pray for & thank ALL the heros of that day. Not just cops, fire fighters, EMS workers, but the rescue dogs, Red Cross & the Christian Church who came to give a hand; those who were in these buildings helping strangers & friends get out safely even tho their lives were in danger too; those who were on PA's Flight 93 who took it upon themselves to take back our plane. When I am faced with a situation, I see the cold, hard reality of it. Emotions never play a part. Part of this I contribute to warnings I receive. Whenever something bad is about to happen, I feel terrible pain in my stomach/abdomen. This pain always precedes my car breaking down, my relationship ending, and a hospitalization in the family to name a few, but it has also preceded the Oklahoma City bombing, the space shuttle disaster, and now September 11, 2001. I was staying at father's home that September, waiting for my new house to be ready to move into. The evening of September 10, the stomach pains started. The pain kept me awake most of the night. Normally, I would have been up before the first plane crashed into the tower, bue due to lack of sleep, I had slept in. My dad woke me up as soon as he heard the news. He came running into my room framtic, calling my name. He said, "Jennye, you need to wake up and watch this! They've crashed a plane into the World Trade Center!" He turned on my TV and stood there, watching. Being half asleep, his words made no sense to me. I asked him, "Now, why would anybody want to do that?" His reply, "I don't know, but they did. You really need to see this." He went back into his room where his sister was on the phone. She had called him to tell him of the tragedy. I looked at my TV, but in my still not quite awake stage, the images made no sense. In my mind, I had the idea of a King Kong remake. After I woke up, I sat in front of my televison, I saw the smoke billowing out of the tower, the people running in wild mayham to get to safety, but I couldn't hear the screams, or the announcers' commentary. For the first time in my life, I was shocked. I was speechless. I had only one image, knowledge of only one plane being crashed, but the pain in my gut told me it was far from over. The pain grew more intense, and I doubled over. When I composed myself, I sat back up to see the second tower had been hit. Yet, still, the pain was there. I had to work in just a couple of hours, so I got ready to face my day. I came out of the shower to more smoke and fire on the screen. Only it wasn't the WTC this time. It was the Pentagon. Still, the pain had not subsided. I went to work early knowing that my sister-my boss would need the help. I watched the people come into the gas station with their faces striken with fear. Each one had something to say, something they needed to say, and I proved to be a damn good listener because I was having a hard time forming words myself. Later on, my sister was working outside, and I ran to her with the news. A plane had crashed in Pennsylvania. "What next?", she asked. "What else is going to happen? Where?" I gave her the only comfort I could provide. It was over. The pain that had tormented me for almost 24 hours had finally eased. I knew the plane in Pennsylvania was the last of the horror that Americans would be witnessing today. With the pain, the shock and the speechlessness subsided as well, but I still never told my story. The reality of what had happened had set in, quicker then it had for others I'm sure. So many people, had the need to confide their fears in another, and I chose to be the confidant of everyone I came across for the next several weeks. I did as so many Americans elsewhere did. I went on with my life. I went to work, took my daughter to school, went shopping, went to the movies...I enjoyed my life that was still ahead of me. I also mourned for everyone who had lost theirs. I cryed for the children, not only the ones who had lost loved ones on September 11, but for all the children who had lost a piece of their innocence that day from witnessing the evil in the world. I gave money. I didn't give near as much as others, but I gave more than I could afford. Money didn't have the same value as before. I wanted to give blood, but I couldn't. Having been a donor for a while, I had given blood shortly before September 11, so it was too early to give again. Most importantly, I prayed. I have never considered myself religious. I haven't been to church in over 10 years, but prayer has always been in my life. The weeks following September 11, I prayed harder and longer than ever before or since in my life. If I was awake, I was praying. And I set out to teach my daughter that there is evil in the world. Evil of such magnitude that our imaginations can not begin to cmprehend it. I also set out to teach her that there is love in the world. Love of such magnitude that evil doesn't stand a chance. Normally, I drive to work from Vienna, VA to Riverdale, MD. This day, I took the Metro and then a cab. The cab driver was grumpy after I told him that I wanted to take the cab from Pennsylvania Ave NW downtown to Wisconsin Ave NW uptown in Tenleytown. I believe he was interested in only downtown fares. The cab driver was listening to National Public Radio's Morning Edition program. The newscaster broke into the normal programming to say that it is believed that a commuter plane crashed into one of the two towers of the World Trade Center. I gave the cab driver a generous tip and I was on my way. An older woman then stopped me in the street and told me that a second plane had hit the other tower of the World Trade Center. I proceeded to my training session and I apoligized for being a few minutes late. I then shared what I heard. Within seconds, I made almost everyone get upset. I then told my peers that I couldn't confirm whether what I heard was true. I really didn't want to make anyone cry. Within minutes, we got confirmation that the planes were hit. Next, we heard that there were more planes unaccounted for and rumors started flying that more buildings were hit. Unfortunately, we found out the Pentagon was hit. We were then told that we had to leave. Luckily, I was able to get in touch with an old friend who lived nearby and I arranged to stay with him. I also called my Dad and broke the news to him. I was lucky I could talk to him. Many of my peers were frustrated when their phones did not work. I walked with the training coordinator down Wisconsin Avenue to my friend's apartment in the Chancery across from the Nationa Cathedral. We watched TV and watched history unfold. Hours later, we got some food at a nearby cafe. Wisconin Ave was empty. There were no cars on the road and absence of sound was eery. My old friend drove me to the Metro station and I rode the train home. When the train left the tunnel enrout to Vienna, I got a phone call from my friend Francois in Paris. He was crying. He was glad that I was alive. When I got home, I got a phone call from my friend Adriana in Porte Alegre, Brazil. She was happy that I was ok and felt very sad for the people in New York. In July 2001, I took Adriana to New York City. When I checked my E-mail, I had three frantic E-mails from an old girlfriend in Japan. She wanted to know if I was ok. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: At the time I could not afford a tv yet so I was getting ready to go to class in my dorm room as usual without even a clue as to what was happening. My phone rang and my cousin (who also was attending WSU) called me and asked me how far away from the World Trade Center did my sister work. I replied that I thought it was a couple of blocks or more and asked why she was asking. And her exact words were, "Because they are gone." I asked her to clarify and she told me that two planes had run into the buildings and I pretty much hung up on her and called my parents. The told me that my sister was physically ok but that she had seen alot of it happen and that she was really freaked out. After calling my cousin to let her know that my sister was ok, I left my room and went to watch the tv that was in the common room but I could only watch it for so long. All over campus professors and staff members pulled tvs outside of the buildings so that people could watch what was happening. That is how I heard about the Pentagon. I went to all my classes that day. Being a philosophy major we spoke about it alot in my classes, especially my ethics class. When I got home I checked my email and my sister had emailed my whole family a play by play as the whole thing unfolded until she left her office to walk to a safe place. I still have those emails to this day. I am very thankful that my sister is ok.
