Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was about 7:48am (Central time)when I got off the elevator onto the 22nd floor of the office building where I work. There were some people from my floor who were in the conference room next to my office suite who heard me and yelled at me to come into the room and see the TV---they were saying that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I ran into the room and just then the second plane hit, and I thought it was a replay of the first plane...the other people were yelling and saying, no it wasn't a replay, another plane just hit the WTC! I immediately thought that this was no accident. I went into my office and pulled out the TV and watched the events that were unfolding. Then my boss called and told me to go home. It was about 8:30am by then, and I looked out my office window and saw that the building across the river was being evacuated. I turned on the radio and heard that most of downtown Chicago was evacuating. I checked the Metra commuter train schedule and learned that the next train out was at 10:30 am, not even thinking that the trains would not be running a regular schedule due to the fact that thousands and thousands of people were leaving the city at the same time. Nevertheless, I stayed in the office long enough to watch as the WTC towers imploded. When I went outside, there were hordes of people headed to the train station. Incredibly, I found a friend who lives near me and also rides the same train. We made our way to the station and down to the tracks. There was a train sitting there and scores of people were getting on it. My friend wanted to wait for the next train, but I insisted on getting on this one. We were some of the last to get on and had to stand most of the way home. Earlier, while still at the office, I called my son who is an aviation student at a local university. I woke him up and asked if he'd pick me up at the train station. He said he had a flight lesson, and I told him he would not be flying any time soon. I told him about the WTC attacks, and he was still sure that he'd be flying. But I told him to pick me up at the station, and that was that. He later told me that when I hung up, his flight instructor called and said there would be no flight lessons until further notice. I got off the train and my son was waiting to pick me up. The first thing he said to me was that the attack was orchestrated by Osama bin Laden. I didn't even know who bin Laden was. He said OBL had said several weeks ago that there would be an attack on America. By this time, it was about 12:30 and we were both hungry. We stopped at a small restaurant along the way home to grab a bite. There were a lot of people there, mostly older ladies and men in their 60s and 70s. There was also a TV hanging from the ceiling. The TV was showing the attack, but strangely, all of the people were sitting at their tables, eating and talking as if a boring movie was on. America was being attacked, but they couldn't be bothered. When I got home, the first thing I did was grab the American flag and hang it outside. I spent most of the next 8 hours glued to the TV set. That evening, my husband and I went to our church for an impromptu prayer service. While walking to the church, we looked up to the sky. It was an eerie feeling, not seeing nor hearing any planes. We live in flight paths of two major airports, O'Hare and Chicago Midway, so it was especially noticeable. Fast-forward to today, May 29, 2002: My son is still an aviation student. I pray that nothing happens to him. I pray for all who have been touched by the terrible tragedy of 9/11/01. Tell us your story: I was sitting with an Auditor going over company processes, all of a sudden there was a strange silence in the building and people were getting up out of their desks. They were heading for the main conference room which housed a television. Somebody walked by and said in a very soft voice the Trade Center in New York city has been hit by a plane. The Auditor and I looked at each other and went to the room, by the time we got there the second tower had been hit. We were all shoved into this room you could hear a pin drop as we watched the events unfold. The Pentagon, the Towers crumbling, the plane that went down in Pennsylvania, you could hear people starting to sob. We couldn't believe our eyes or what we were hearing and seeing. People who lived close to the site ran home and brought in more televisions so we could keep up on the events as they were happening. Some of the employees starting calling family and friends in the New York area to see if they were safe. We had to struggle to get through the rest of the day, most of us were in tears and full of fear of what will happen next, then the skies were silent, no planes it was a very eerie feeling. I'm from New Jersey originally and worried about the people back home since we lived in a town 30 minutes outside of New York City. Today one year later I still struggle with the events of that day, the people whose lives were taken from their loved ones, young, old so so many people. Those who left us that day and those they left behind remain in my prayers everyday. I will never forget, I don't think any American will forget September 11th 2001. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was returning back to the Pittsburgh PA area (I live in Washington, PA) from a trip to Los Angeles. I was not supposed to actually leave until 9/12 - however, I decided I wanted to return home 1 day early. As I was walking to the gate area to get my flight I passed by a TV screen - where everyone was staring at. I saw the smoke and the tower - it didn't register really. We boarded our flight (which was to take off at 6:58AM PT. It was well past 7 AM and we weren't going anywhere - just sitting there. I heard everyone talking on their cell phones and then people started to say that planes had crashed in the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and then I heard the city Pittsburgh, PA (I was getting really frightened at that point). We were advised that all the planes had been ordered down and no flights would be taking off until further notice. I didn't know what to do as I was all alone. My husband was franctic because of what was going on and I was 3,000 miles from home and there was no way I was going to get back home anytime soon! I sat in the sports bar area of the Burbank Hilton and just stared and watched the big screen TV for the next 3 hours or so. The next few days were really very stressful. Going to the airport, having your flight cancelled - not knowing when I would be able to get back home. I also kept thinking about all the lost lives all the families. My problem was "nothing" compared to what they were and are dealing with now! I was stranded in CA - but luckily my husband's brother lived in the area and I stayed with them until I could finally get back home on Sunday th 14th. I got back to PA - to my husband and other family members and to my home. There are over 3,000 people who did not! I think about that quite often. It's not as intense now as it first was, but it's always in the back of my mind! It's so ironic, I didn't know until a couple of months ago, that where I work (which is now 30 years)- my start date is 9/11. 9/11 is a date that will always be with me in more ways than one! Tell us your story: it's early tuesday morning, my mom walks into my room crying tell me that my fience would not be able to make our wedding day. i start to cry wondering why she is telling me this. she makes me get out of bed and go to the tv downstairs. then it hits me the site of all that smoke and fire comming from the twin towrs. i sit in shock and wonder how my fience is doing and if they have shiped him out to NY. finally i get the call. he is all right the base is on high elert and he wont be able to talk long.he wants me to know that he loves me and he will let me know any news that he can. all day long i see thease horable images and wonder what will be next. what will happen to us all and what are we going to do about this attack. i then decied that i am going to join the military. i want to grow stronger and be challenged as well as protect people from things like this from ever happening again. i go to the recrutting office and they tell me that i am to hevy. so i work out and now 45 pounds latter i have 5 pounds and then i am off. soon to be called a mairen. i hope this story inspires at least one other person to do what they feel is a way to remeber those who lost there live on 9/11 and all those who lost there lives to support our freedom. My heart sunk in my chest and tears filled my eyes as I listened to her explain about the details. The college I attend is a Christian University and I remember getting together with different groups of people and praying with them. My heart was very humbled and heavy. All I wanted to do was go home to my house in Washington and hug and hold my family. The very fact that I was 2000 plus miles away from them hit home. I felt so alone and scared. I missed them so despartly. I felt blessed at the same time that I could miss them. Many of the people that day lost their family memebers forever. I started crying as I thought about the children who would grow up without a mother or father. A daughter who would never be able to graduate and attend college. A son that would never get to finish out his football season. Here I am lucky as can be to have all my family members alive. I really felt for those people and I realized how blessed and fortunate I really am. This event also opened my eyes to see that this event did not take GOD by suprise. My husband who was on his way to work,called and asked me to turn on a news channel to see what the radio DJs were talking about. I watched the replays of the first jet and we assumed it was a freak accident. Within a few minutes the next jet hit the WTC, and my blood ran cold as the newscasters became hysterical, and the word "terrorist" was used as the explanation of what we were seeing. Maybe an hour and a half later, my OB/GYN's office called to reschedule my check-up for later that morning. The Doctor was called in to do an emergency C-section, they urged that I refrain from watching the coverage on TV. However,when I went for my check-up that afternoon, the news was blaring from all of these speakers throughout the office. Our class was wondering that why everyone had been leaving. No one was telling us what was happening, not even the teacher. At the time my mother had been working in the same school and later I was dismissed to leave to her. I was still confused and not knowing what had happened I asked my mother, ?Why is everyone leaving so early?? ?They hit the Pentagon!? I was so shocked; I didn?t know what to say. Although I didn?t know what she meant when she said ?they?. I went to a room which had the news on n all over was the pentagon burning and the twin towers falling. I couldn?t believe it. Every school in the county was to leave school and head straight home, for they didn?t know if the attacks were over. All the other schools had been off for a week and my school also. Since our school was an Islamic School we took an extra week of, just for safety (since they claimed that a Muslim had been responsible for this attack). Through those weeks I felt more of a stranger than I had ever felt since I started wearing a scarf. At the stores people would look at me and talk underneath their breath or to the person near them. They were either very scared or had hatred within them. I felt as if I could not be trusted. I remember even one time that I was standing in line at the convenient store waiting for my items to be rung up. Not even a smile as most people give. As the cashier scanned the items she then threw them in the bag and handed the bag to be as if I were an animal. I thought she was just having a bad day, but as I waited for the person behind me to get her stuff, the cashier had a sudden change of personality, ?Hi, how are you?Have a nice day?. I didn?t want to make the situation worst so I just left. Situations like that don?t happen anymore, since it?s been 3 years now. But of course no one has forgotten about that day. A couple months after the attacks, the news had been focusing on the religion of the Muslims: Islam. I?m sure that a lot of people had learned a lot for this religion means no harm and only wants peace. I felt that a lot of people are more interested in this religion and I had heard that many have converted. I just hope, as everyone else does, that we never have to go through a situation like this again. I frequently have the TV on while I get ready and was just about to turn it off when they started showing the damage to the first Tower. No one could believe it was anything, but an accident until we all watch as the second Tower was hit. I became numb as I realized that this was no accident. I continued on my way to work and listened on the radio. I got to work and was watching a very bad picture on the TV there, when the Tower's collapsed. It looked like a war zone from some movie. I work in the 911 industry, (training, protocols, software, etc.) and we had just had one of our trainers in New York - he had left the day before. There was such fear at work, none of us really knowing what to do. Some employees called in to say they didn't dare come downtown, others, like me, just sat looking at the TV, trying to comprehend what was happening. It was months before things were back to any type of normal day to day procedures. I am not one of those women who cry at the drop of a hat, but to this day, I can't get through the National Anthem without feeling a great sense of loss, but also a great sense of patriotism. Tell us your story: I watched a small part of the 9-11 rememberance ceremony 2006, and NYPD Officer Moria Smith's husband and fellow NYPD officer really did her, his beautiful daughter, the NYPD and the City of New York proud with his powerful words on this anniversary of 9-11. The FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, and EMS did not hesitate to sacrifice literally their all Sept. 11 yet the City, Federal Government and the LMDC hesitated to give them the simple honor and respect due of their name, rank and dept. with a seperate sign at the WTC site all these years there by making them invisible. Their reasoning and concern was this might make them some how special but this is "spiritual paucity" poor city to think this way rather than recognizing a heroic fact of history that the City of New York should be proud of although it is also heart breaking. This was the largest loss for the FDNY, NYPD, PAPD and EMS for each dept and for Our Nation's history. Many were highly decorated serving Our Country in the military and with in their dept. yet on the darkest day I witnessed and I can still remember the smell in the air -- the death dust -- people walking up from the WTC with death dust all over them and still our first responders and all those that volunteered that have illness fight for medical support and to pay medical bills and some have died a slow heroic death in the line of duty post 9-11. There are all kinds of illnesses related to inhaling the death dust from all the destruction and death from the olympic endeavor and team work of some many great souls that felt compelled to help from all over. Firehouses were closed including Engine 212, a small beautiful firehouse closest to the 10 alarm fire that destroyed historical Greenpoint. The firehouses were all pieces of history and living memorials. The NYPD's salary was lowered and still I think to myself, NYPD, thanks more than ever for protecting us. I think of a fireman that made me feel so loved and appreciated when I would occassionally see him around the neighborhood and what a humble man. It is sad his and so many first responders were made invisible so it is a comfort to visit the beautiful and powerful frieze on the side of the firhouse closest to the WTC site. The darkest day I every witnessed overwhelming goodness and generousity prevailed which is a testament to New York and to humanity and that is a great comfort. Memories come back of the terrible smell, the enormous amount of trucks sent down to pick up the dead, the bus loads of young police officers still in training and even buses of firemen all covered in death dust coming out. I remember seeing Rescue 1 every day driving up the West Side Highway. People donated anything and everything. I remember hearing how boots would melt from the heat still coming up from the smoking rubble. The lines where so long to donate blood Sept. 11 people were turned away. I remember when the FDNY firetrucks going down to pick up one of their own. I wish it hasn't turned into a struggle for medical care, for firehouses to stay open because they mean so much to the community, the NYPD's starting salary would be raised and all those with 9-11 illness get the medical and financial support they deserve. If I died down there I would have wanted people to remember all I achieved with my life not how I died but I do hope the memorial is powerful and respects everyone rather than making our Fire, Police and EMS that died in record number invisible. I want the memorial to have order because I remember so much chaos the days and weeks following with photos every where including St. Vincents Hospital, Union Square and it felt like every where. I remember NYU Medical and the morgue and the amazing dedication of our NYPD detectives as they worked around the clock like guardian angels for people that took the Express to Heaven that day, even if it was the smallest piece of DNA. I am proud I have had letters published in The New York Times, The Wall St. Journal, The New York Post, The New York Daily News, Newsday, and AM New York for our FDNY, NYPD, PAPD, and EMS and I hope that anyone who makes profit from Sept. 11 donates money to help out -- especially right now for the medical support and bills so more don't die because again -- they did not hesitiate yet their has been too much hesitation in return. It is nice Oliver Stone's flm is bringing attention to the role of rescue workers but I would like to see a large percentage of the films total profits including DVD sales to go to pay medical care and bills. I remember the terrible smoking massive wound that some many brave souls worked day and night on and slowly it looked like a plastic surgeon came but the progress is too slow and as slow as it is time will not wait so I wish we would make important steps forward on all fronts from rebuilding to supporting those that are sick from the death dust to honoring our FDNY,NYPD, PAPD, EMS and all uniformed rescue workers. I still think this is a bad dream sometime...and one unlikely source in my neighorhood really helped me by inspiring my art and writing so I think of them today with gratitude. As an artist you need sustanance and it is funny but a couple of years after the fact they were my muse-art life force. People seemed to grow very agitated and I heard the word plane crash. I didn't see anything on the Internet, so I called my sister in Omaha Nebraska, She described what was going on, on the TV. A half an hour later, I couldn't reach her. I couldn't reach anyone. As the horrible day unfolded, much of our information was from the single TV in the very large office. The thought that there were still planes in the air that might be headed for New York was the most terrifying. I left and walked to Union Square and a friend and I went to Old Town Tavern. We couldn't quite believe what had transpired. The bar was very lively. The streets were filled with people heading uptown, but cars were scarce. Every once in a while, you would see a person coated with the dust, looking disoriented. We departed BWI around 8:00am and landed in Jacksonville at 10:00am. When we were going through the Jacksonville airport we noticed crowds around the TVs, then we realized that the planes had hit the twin towers, and then heard that a plane had struck the Pentagon. Meantime, my husband who works in Alexandria was frantically calling the hotel where I was staying trying to get in touch with me. Where he works in Alexandria, he saw the plane that crashed into the Pentagon and when it hit, their building shook. The business closed around 11:00 am that day. I was finally able to get in touch with my husband while I was at the airport in Jacksonville. Later that afternoon I was able to speak with our two boys. The boys knew I was flying down to Jacksonville, and both were afraid that I was killed. The flight back to BWI on Thursday, September 13, was cancelled out of Jacksonville. So we rented a car from Jacksonville and drove through the night to reach Maryland. I visited NYC in May, so it was only a few months until it would be 5 years. Even though, time has passed, ground zero is still a very busy place. People still show their love for our country by leaving flowers, notes, etc. This was such a special moment for me. I witnessed the attack and sent out two e-mails about it to family and friends. Here are my e-mails: (This first one I wrote @ 1:30 am Wednesday, 9/12/01 when I couldn't sleep after the attack) Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 8:55 am Brooklyn, NY A woman told me that a plane had crashed in to the World Trade Center. I opened the blinds of the office window and looked at the WTC, 5 miles away. The towers were framed by the window, as though I had a front row seat at a show, only this was real. The right hand tower (#1) had a thick plume of black, black smoke blowing to the south (my left). It billowed out from the upper floors of the building. It appeared that the plane had struck the building 15-20 floors from the top. I could see the antenna array on top of the building but I couldn't see much of the damage or the top of the second tower because of the smoke. Several of the people in the office and I discussed how such an accident could happen. Its kind of hard to not see a tower 1,350 feet tall. I set up my laptop and work files and occasionally watched the building from my front row seat. Then I noticed a black plane flying low, just over the tops of the nearby buildings. I thought to myself "He's flying awfully low." Then I realized it was an attack on the second tower seconds before the plane rammed into the building. I watched helplessly as the plane hit the building and a line of flame streaked through the building. This wasn't television or a movie special effect I was watching. The real horror was the realization that such scenes are "entertainment" in our culture except this time it was real. Real people, real fanatics, real murder, and very, very deliberate. The flame and smoke seemed to roll up the building from the point of impact and join the smoke from the first tower. We watched the sky, fearful of other attacks. The smoke continued to pour from both buildings. A stream of black, oily smoke stretched across my panorama, from one o'clock to ten o'clock. Tower # 2 appeared to have been hit 45 floors from the top. I was afraid that one or both buildings would lose the floors above the impact points. I wasn't prepared to lose both buildings. Tower #2 collapsed about 30 minutes after it was hit. The black smoke continued to pour from the building and then the building bulged out below the impact point. It appeared to transform itself from a solid building to crumbling chalk, emitting thick clouds of white dust/smoke that billowed up and covered both buildings. It looked like a sand castle that was crushed by a giant hand, so that the downward pressure caused the middle to "blow" out and disintegrate. It took 10-15 minutes for the cloud to settle. Tower 2 was gone, no rubble (from my point of view), no shell, no stub of a building, nothing. I thought of the rescue workers around the building, firemen, police, EMT's and I wondered how many were buried. Thirty minutes later Tower #1 collapsed. I could understand the collapse of Tower 2. I thought Tower 1 might lose the top floors but no more. Again, the bulge started below the impact point, smaller than the first one. For a moment I thought that perhaps the collapse would be limited to only the top half of the building but the debris pushed down through the remainder of the building and again a dust cloud rose. When it cleared (about 11:00) there was no sign that the World Trade Center towers had even existed. I keep thinking about that black plane and watching it explode in the tower. I think about what the people sitting at their desks saw and thought before they died and I think about the terror of the passengers on board the plane. And I also think about the criminals who committed these acts. How do you stop an attack when your attacker is committed to killing himself? I imagine being on one of those planes and the frustration and anger at being able to do nothing about it. Perhaps that is what makes me the angriest, the use of our own people to attack us. (The second e-mail I wrote Wednesday night, 9/12/01 after considering my daughter's comment) When I called my family Tuesday night I talked to each of my kids about the terrorist attack. My two teenagers, Matthew & Kathleen, had an appreciation for what had happened without being melodramatic. I was not sure about what my nine year old Maryellyn would say. She is the melodramatic one who resists all change and has the greatest empathy among my three children. Maryellyn even cried when we got rid of our old refrigerator. So I was somewhat concerned when I asked if she had watched the news reports. "Yes" she replied. What do you think about it, I asked. "Daddy, did you really see it happen?" Yes, I saw everything after the first plane struck. "Cool!" she replied Needless to say I was a little surprised by her response. I expected tears for the victims, or even calm indifference for something that didn't affect her world, but never "Cool!" At the time I attributed it to the attitude of a nine year old who only knew that her father had directly witnessed a historic event. I thought she didn't really appreciate what had happened and that if she did her answer would change. Maryellyn, I was wrong, it is Cool. In our church we use a phrase, a litany (if Baptists have such things). "God is good...all the time. All the time...God is good." We generally use the phrase in worship or when we are particularly joyful, to acknowledge God's bounty. It is not just about God being good but also doing good to a sinful mankind. If we believe that God is good, all the time and that All the time, God is good. Then we must believe that God is sovereign, and sovereign all the time. For how can God be good and do good all the time unless He is sovereign and able to ordain that He is good and wills to do good, all the time? "All the time" means that nothing can interfere or change His desire for our own eventual good, not this world with devils filled or earthly powers or the prince of darkness grim can change God's character or will. This is our joy. This is why in prosperity we praise God, in turmoil we praise God, in joyful celebration we praise God, and in the midst of pain and grief we praise God. I don't know how God will use this but He will use it. Look at what has already occurred, a public acknowledgment of prayer in our government, a sense of unity among our nation, a president who speaks openly of his faith. All things work together to God's glory, even this crime. And that is Cool. God is sovereign...all the time. All the time...God is sovereign. We had just started to get the last preparations ready to leave for the day, when an announcement was made that a plane had hit the North Tower. I immediately sat down an watched the smoke. I worried about friends and family who may have been in the area, and wondered how such a horrible accident could have occurred. When I saw the second plane hit, my first words were "This is terrorism. That can't be an accident!" My daughter, 3 years old at the time, said "Mommy, why did that airplane hit that building." Then she ran to her room and brought me the painting that we had not yet hung and said "Is that the building?" That's when I realized that she was watching, too, and closely. I tried to explain that it was a bad accident, but decided to retreat into another room to find something more suitable for her. I spent the rest of the day fielding phone calls from friends and family, trying to make sure that I had returned to Chicago safely. I also saw my husband on the verge of a mental breakdown as he panicked over family that he could not reach. I spent the day trying to calm the man, and shield the child. Much of it is a blur, but I will never forget the images. I spent the entire day trying to remain calm for the sake of my family. When my daughter went to sleep that night, I stayed in her bed for a long time, apologizing to her for bringing her into such a cruel world. Thankfully, in her sleep, she never heard a word. I collapsed onto my own bed and cried until I couldn't find another tear. We still have the painting of the Twin Towers in her bedroom and once in a while she mentions it. Sometimes she reminds me that "Airplanes shouldn't hit buildings." I'll never be the same. I hope that my daughter will never have to feel the way that I did that day. My husband and I have been scarred for life, but I know that many other people were affected in a much deeper way. I have not been on an airplane since September 7th, 2001, nor have I allowed my daughter to fly. I don't know when I will again.
