Tell us your story: Life as I new it ended on Sept. 11,2001 at 1005 when I recieved a call from my Platoon Sargeant informing me that my unit was on alert. I was a single parent of five and working two full time jobs to support us. Post Office as a mail carrier from 0700-1530 and the IRS as a data transcriber from 1800-0230. I had to leave my children ages 17,13,10,5,and 2 for a year. This was devastating for my children. How do you explain to a 2 year old that you have to leave them in someone else's care? My three oldest dealt with it a little better because I had to leave them for Desert Storm. I missed all of there birthdays and that was hard on all of us. I take satisfaction in knowing that by me going I was making life a little safer for my children as well as all the children around the world. I am very proud of the contributions I have made in the war on terrorism and I'd do it again if I had to. God has brought me home safe and has taken care of my family. HE has given my fiance' the strength to stand by me and wait. Together with my family they took care of my children and they're all well. I dn't regret a day of my military career and it has been a long hard one. I have 9yrs 10mnths active and 2 years reserve time and despite serving in two campaigns,I will retire from the United States Army. I drove home on the N.J. Turnpike and could see, firsthand, the New York skyline and the cloud of smoke and dust where the Towers once stood. I didn't yet realize at that time that my uncle worked in Tower 1. When I learned that no one had heard from him, everything stopped. Going to his home and being with the entire family was the longest day of my life. Hearing his kids cry was sickening. Chris was 35 years old with a wife and five kids ages 9 to 2. He left behind his mother, a brother and 4 sisters and countless nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and loved ones. As I stared at the television in disbelief, I felt like I was watching some Hollywood movie. "Was this really happening in my country?" I thought we were indestructible." Suddenly to my amassment, I watched as the secound tower was hit. Even though I saw the sight through someone's camera, the scene was real, those were real people, and all I could think of doing was crying. No one I knew worked in those buildings, but yet I was amazed by the magnitude of the destruction and the lose of life. But there is still time for more people to... The South Tower came crashing to the ground. Now it was up to the emergency crew to rescue as many people as they could. Around 10:29 am the North Tower fell. The 110-story buildings were diminished into dust. By now, the word American, took up a new meaning. Before I knew it, the Pentagon was struck and another plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania, my home state. The acts that seemed to begin as an accident were actually part of someone's plan. "Who would do such a thing? What was this person thinking?" One year later, I am still shocked when I see pictures. Just one month before the attack, I was near the Twin Towers. Last May 11, 2001, I visited ground zero. That area had changed, New York had changed, Americans in general changed. Also in May, I visited Washington D.C. on a class trip. Being an American really made me feel proud. I was living in a country where people were really free and where terorists cannot destroy the spirit that keeps it a live. As I participated in the memorial service at the football stadium, I looked around and saw people that I know that are firemen. Many of them knew someone who was in the attack or that helped to clean it up. During the moment of silence, I thought about the parent-less children, the parents that lost their son and/or daughter, and the people of America that helped pull our country back on it's feet. People may try to destroy America but it's citizens are determined to fight to save the country that they believe in. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The day was usual; I woke up my 13 year old son at 6:15 a.m. and we both began our normal morning routine. At 7:10 a.m I watched my son board the school bus and I headed inside to finish getting ready for work. I keep a small TV in my bedroom and religiously listen to the Today Show each and every weekday morning while doing my daily ritual of dressing, doing the make-up, making sure I don't have a "bad hair day", taking care of Honeybear's (the dog) needs and just doing whatever last minute things I always manage to find to do before heading out the door. I was just about to head out of the house & went over to turn off the TV when the Today Show suddenly started talking about the horrible incident of 9/11. I stood glued to the TV and witnessed the 2nd plane fly into the 2nd tower in total disbelief. I could feel myself becoming anxious and wondered what was going to happen next. I wanted to be with my son and called the school to advise of the events. I was assured by the office they would take care of the kids, but we could get them out of class if necessary. Living in a suburb of Chicago, I knew the City could be a prime target and I seriously thought about bringing my son home. I then received a call from a co-worker who asked if I'd heard anything about something going on with planes. When I related the incidents to her,she asked if I could bring in a TV as our office has none. I was able to round up 3 small TV's we have and took them all to our office. Everyone watched the news for the next few days while working. The events that took place on September 11, 2001 will be with us forever. My son is old enough to understand the consequences and impact this has had on our country. I do know this has made us a much stronger country, however, I feel this strength will fade rapidly. Our country has become one of greed for wealth, and those who fit this category will be the ones who lose this strength first. It's sad this will happen, but it will. (this is a whole story on it's own, so won't go there now!) The 1-year anniversary of 9/11 was just as moving as the event itself. While it brought many tears, even though I did not have a personal connection to any of the deceased or injured, it also brought back the sense of pride I have for this great Country. My co-workers advised me today they thought of me instantly for bringing the news into their lives a year ago with the TV's I brought to work. There was a very somber mood in our office all day as we reflected on our thoughts and prayers of the losses so many people suffered. The media did an exceptional job today in bringing back to us the painful reminder of what happened. I cried many times today listening to the stories of the survivors. My heart goes out to every person who lost a loved one or was injured from the horrible terrorist attack. I will continue to pray for world peace so our children and their children can live without fear in this beautiful country. Tell us your story: I remember my son who is in the Coast Guard and was stationed at Marblehead,Ohio on Lake Erie, calling me to ask us if we had heard what had happen. Instanly I turned on the TV and there it was the World Trade Towers burning and smoking. I watched in horror as the second plane hit the second building. I asked my son if he were okay and what this meant for him. He explained that they were on High alert and what ever he was asked to do he would do it. I said good-by and that I loved him. Then I sat and watched as the days events unfolded, the pentagon, and then the plane in Pennsylvania, and I cried. I cried for all the people that I knew were dead, I cried for their families, I ached inside for the American people and wondered how it would effect all of us. I hurt inside for the man who was President, not even in office a year and faceing the greatest challenge any President had had to face. And I grew angry. So very angry. How could any one plan the mass destruction of so many people, cause so much hurt and pain to all the people of America. For the first time in my life I honestly fealt that I could have killed someone, the someone who had done so much hurt. Time has passed, the anniversary of 9/11 is upon us. My heart swells with pride. The terror and devastation of a year ago will never be forgotten. The terrorist who tried to ruin are country and attacked the whole world have done something that they never imagined. They united the world as one. My hope and pray is that from this we will continue to grow as a race of beings who can and will accept all and any for who they are and what they are, no prejudice, no more oppression, no more wars. Someda, many, many years from now we will look back to September 11th 2001 as the day the human race begin it's climb towards World Peace. It will be a long road, filled with pain and more suffering, but we will get there. I have seen more love and courage in this last year then in my entire lifetime. I am proud of my Son and his courage in wanting to protect his country and the world. 9/11 changed us all, not just the people in New York, the Pentagon or Pennsylvannia but all of us. I will say that I was in school and saw one of the two planes crash into the World Trade Center and saw the two buildings collapse. I did not feel anything but hate for the people who did this. The attack happened when I was in Miss Kersch's Earth Science class. It was third period early in the morning. The kids around me could not believe what was happening. I think the people of America were surprised that this happened. I think that we were thinking that we were too feared to be attacked. Well it looks like fear did not keep those two planes from crashing into the twin towers. My self, I did not see the planes hit but I did see the buildings fall. I think the second building that was hit fell first. Ten minutes later the other building fell. How could something like this happen? I wonder if the people in the buildings felt more fear than shock.. The New York Fire department and the police department lost a lot of brave people that day and there were a lot of stories of their bravery. I am proud of the work that they did. Many volunteers from around our area went to help clean up the two-mile path of destruction that was left. It took a long time to clean up and so far everybody that was killed have not been found. Just this past week they have stopped looking for corpses. It was a very sad thing to see knowing that some families will never know what happened to their loved ones. Let this be a lesson to us so that we can be ready for the next attack. Can we do something that will prevent this from happening again? I think we can. He came to pick me up at 8:30 am and the first words out of his mouth were "It has already been a really crappy morning" I hadn't yet heard the news and asked him if his pickup had broken down. "No, Angela, someone flew a plane into one of the World Trade Center buildings. They've done it right this time." He turned on the TV and I all I could do was stand there in awe. By then the second plane had hit and mass chaos ensued. We went to the farm show in Fargo,and saw the F-16 planes from the National Guard leave to defend our country. It was so strange--they had closed malls in Grand Forks and Fargo, gas prices shot well over $5 a gallon, which was sick and twisted,not to mention wrong) and we were left feeling empty, hollow and wondering what's next? I will never forget those who died and I will never forget that bright and sunny day that darkened our nation. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I am a Federal Service employee, a supervisor at Fleet Technical Support Center, Pacific. We provide technical services to the various ships and shore stations in the Pacific/Indian Ocean areas for all systems and equipments installed aboard U.S. Navy units. I arrived at my office at 0530, the normal time for us to arrive since we commute from Temecula, CA, about 60 miles north of San Diego. Sometimes traffic is heavier that normal so we plan to arrive earlier than our normal start time of 0600 just in case. My normal morning routine is to lite off my computer, check email, while listening to the news on the radio. This morning was a little different. About 10 minutes after getting into my routine, the news broadcaster mentioned that an airplane apparently had gone astray and had run into one of the twin towers in New York City. He speculated that the plane was from Kennedy or La Guardia and had simply gone off course. I called my wife at home in Lake Elsinore and asked her to turn on the TV and see if there was anything on the network news about the crash. She said that she was watching the whole thing on TV and that has just seen another plane in the air behind the second tower. Just then, the plane collided into the tower and the flames shot out the other side of the building. I heard her scream, then say "Oh, my God"..... She started to cry. Not exactly the way I would have wanted her to start her day, but today, the world was changing forever. We talked for about 10 more minutes before I had to hang up. Things started happening around the base. Security was advanced to a very high level. Personnel were being turned around at the gates. Access was restricted to those already on the base, and only active duty military personnel were being allowed on the station. The traffic patterns around the Naval Station were quickly clogged with cars and civilian employees trying to get to work. Those that could find parking outside the base did so and walked through tightened security to gain access to the base. Many painful minutes passed as did rumors regarding the status of forces and reactionary responses. Shortly after 0900, all supervisors were assembled in the department office to learn that all civilians were to be released from duty until further notice. No one was to be deemed "essential" for the interim. All functions would be covered by the military members of the command until further notice. Should there be a need, the assigned Command Duty Officer (CDO) would contact the appropriate supervisor for any emergent work that was required by the units of the Pacific Fleet. All civilians were instructed to call in to the CDO each morning to determine our status and when we would be allowed to report back to work. The supervisors were to contact all of their employees as soon as word was received that we were allowed back on board the Naval Station. By 0945 that fateful morning, all civilian employees of Fleet Technical Support Center were dismissed. On the ride home, we were glued to the radio wondering what was next. The evacuation of the White House sent shivers up my spine. The next plane flew into the Pentagon, another site where I had been on many occasions during my 25 years of civilian employment and my nine and one half years of active naval service. Who is this that is attacking the very core of our democracy, and for what purpose? What organized fanatic group or country had mastermined this deadly display of terror? Could it have been a country in the middle east, a land of many cultures so different from mainstream America, where life seems cheap with the daily suicides conducted by Islamic and Muslim fundamentalists for the good of Allah? Too many questions and not enough answers. Arriving home, I found my wife stayed home from work. Glued to the television, I arrived in time to see the second tower collapse to the ground. Still in a state of shock at what had happened, we prayed for the police and firemen, the innocent civilians trapped in the inferno and hellishness of the entire scene. While chasing what had proved to be a non-existent business opportunity the previous year, I had also developed some health problems. We struggled financially throughout 2001, and finally in August, my wife left me. To save money, I had cancelled cable. For the mornng of September 11, I had lined up an appointment with what I thought was going to become a very important client. I had arisen early and driven nearly 2 hours to Madison, WI. My car radio was dead, but I was pretty happy about this appointment and I remember singing my way to Madison. I walked into the client's office about 10 minutes late. When he came to the lobby to meet me, I stuck out my hand and said cheerily, "Good morning, How are you today?" Then a security guard came in saying that one of the Twin Towers was hit with a plane. When the power came back on the teachers had their televisions on the news and I saw one of the towers in flames. I couldn't believe that this is happening. Apparantly it was happening but I was still stunned by it. My father picked me up from school and took me to his job. I watched the television and I thought about how tragic this was. Tell us your story: Around 10:05 AM I was listening to a story on Books-On-Tape as usual on my morning commute from home to George Mason University. I had a strange feeling come over me that the story was not important, so I turned off the tape and hit the news to learn about the crashes into the World Trade Center. I parked and walked toward class seeing a group of students gathered outside of the classroom building. They tried to tell me the news and asked if class was cancelled. Since I already heard about road closings near the Pentagon in a later news report before arriving at school, I decided on the spot that it would be best if we went inside and held class. In the classroom, we turned on the tv, but could only get sound and no pictures. About 80% of the class was there at the starting time at 10:30. First I asked if anyone had relatives at the Pentagon--six had relatives, mostly uncles and cousins. Since the cell phone system was not taking calls, the students did not know what to do. I mentioned that upward to 33,000 work at the Pentagon, so we will hope that no one of those known were in the section where the crash was held. My first task was to do a typical communication exercise during crisis situations--how did you learn about it. I was surprised that the plurality was first a person [family member, friend, etc.], second was the radio, and third was TV. No print was out yet... Then we heard a plane had crashed near Summerset, PA. One of the students was from there and his parents lived near there. I had him try to call on land lines, and use my phone in my office if needed. He came back in 10 minutes--not being able to get through. I told him to take a time period, like every 10 minutes and slip out to try. He had no luck. Then we discussed how rumors would be natural and discussed how journalists verify observations. At the time a bomb was suppossedly set in a car at the State Department. Several students had relatives working there. We heard reports about the roads closing and people walking across the bridges. One of my students got through on her phone to her dad who wanted her to drive home to Maryland through the disrict. I suggested she stay on campus as the district would be closed down and if more attacks would occur they would probably be in the district. Some students decided to leave as the tension was to great. By 11:15 am I was down to half the class. Around 11:25, 20 minutes before the end of class, the tension was so great and the discussion seemed to wither, so en masse, they all got up and left. I went home and had lunch with my wife and then returned to campus at 1:30 in case students were around and I did have a 4:30 class, which was cancelled later in the afternoon by the university closing down. I stayed until 4:45 and then headed home. Several times I say administrators walking through the building. It was reassuring to see them. As soon as we turned it on, we watched the second tower being hit by a second plane. We could not figure out what was happening as it seemed surreal. I had just been to a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert in ohio that sunday, but now it was back to the grind. I had two early classes, and got out at 11 AM, not having heard the news at that point. I went to my car to wait out my break until my next class, and turned on the radio as I always did to listen to my favorite local talk show. But what I heard was some sort of a discussion of terrorist attacks on the world trade center, which I first assumed was a new development or arrest in the 1993 bombing, or some guest who had written a book about it or something. But then, they recapped, stating that the world trade towers had both been completely destroied. They went on to mention a fire at the pentagon, and when I heard that, I immediately started my car and headed for home. On the way, it took several attempts to get a cell phone call out, but I managed to call my family and tell them I was heading back home. I listened to the radio on the way back, and when I arrived home, I finally saw the video of it all. I got in touch with my girlfriend as well (who is now my wife). I called a good friend of mine, remembering that he had been laid off the previous week and had been drinking the night before. It turns out, though I called some time after noon, I woke him up. I told him what was going on, and he didn't believe a word of it. I told him to turn on the tv. He asked what channel, and I told him it didn't matter, even cable channels like MTV had switched to news coverage. The next day was another beautiful blue-sky day, and I'll never forget the clear blue sky without a plane to be seen. We are very near a lot of commuter airports, and underneath a lot of high altitude flight path as well, and on a normal day you can't ever look to the skies without seeing at least a couple of planes. But these were no normal days. None of us will ever forget this day. I suppose it ranks right up there with the moon landing and the kennedy assassination. Tell us your story: I have a radio on at my desk all of the time, mainly for the white noise which covers the real noise of a busy office when on 09/11/01 I heard a news break that said a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I told the two people close by, one a salesman who stated, unsurprised, that he had eaten at "Windows on the World" restaurant and wondered if he would end up with a plane in his soup. The regular programming resumed for about 20 minutes when they again broke in to say that a second plane had hit the South Tower and reports were that the Pentagon had been hit. The receptionist, who lived nearby, went home and brought a TV into my office where we all remained glued for the remainder of the day. We did try to go back and work but the TV simply pulled you back. Some of the comments on that day have remained with me to this day. A female reporter on ABC angrily wondering why we didn't know where the president was had to be the most inane. I, of course, was damn glad no one knew where he was. If we had, as we usually do, told everything we knew the terrorists would follow up on it. Living in a free country has it's perils. Letting it all hang out, as we are still wont to do will always be dangerous. I wouldn't change it for anything. I wasn't too enthusiastic about it since the job I had wasn't my forte, however it was a job to supplement income for myself and to assist my wife. I was working with electricians at the time to help add a new building to Giant's headquarters... we we're in the phase of laying PVC pipe in the ground. I was just praying the day would go by quick. Working in the construction industry I wasn't at liberty to answer my cell phone whenever it rang, although I always had it on wherever I went and thus depended on it at times. Around 9ish in the morning in the middle of hooking 2 pipes together and trying to hold my breath from the fumes of the super glue, my cell phone started to ring and the display read my in-laws caller-id. So I ignored it since I was in the middle of holding pipe together.. add to that the electricians around me we're giving me grief and we're telling me to turn my cell phone off. A few minutes later and a few pipes later I recieved the same call, again I ignored it... but this time after I silenced the phone and the ringing stopped it rang again. At this point my mind was wondering "what could be so important that my mother-in-law keeps calling my cell phone?" So I finally answered my cell phone while I standing in a pit where all the pipe was waiting for me... oddly enough it was my brother-in-law on the phone asking me where my location was. He then proceeded to tell me not to go into D.C. and then told me the WTC Towers we're just attacked by two planes and the pentagon was also hit. He would also call me if there was anymore detail to add to it and hung up. At this point, i'm thinking the events are just a joke and continued to proceed with my work. Later on I thought about it and told a few of the guys I was working with what I just heard and their reaction was.. "yea right.. whatever" I felt that was pretty rude to say considering the thought still hadn't sunk into my mind and into reality. Soon enough within 30 minutes of recieving the phone call, we all stopped work and huddled around one of the work trucks that had just arrived at the job site and everyone was informed of the recent events. Now naturally we we're awaiting word from the shop whether to proceed working or to pause for the day and head on home...... well using the Nextels that we're available to us.... the word was to proceed working since it did not affect our present work. A few of the electricians that had gathered around started walking off and I started to hear the racist remarks coming from them.. that it was an Ayrab and to watch out for all guys with a dot on their head, not to trust them. I was so disgusted by their ignorance that I vowed to myself to eventually leave the trade and the ignorant thinking that I was constantly surrounded by, at the same time one thought came to mind... I was praying that Osama Bin Laden wasn't behind this.. and knew that disgrace, disgust, anger and hatred that would come out as a result of this event. Later on that day around 3:30pm, we all closed up shop for the day and headed to the beltway and for the first time it was CLEAR as if people we're afraid to drive on their OWN roads, we made record time driving home from the dc area to UMBC which is a good one hour drive during normal rush hour traffic. Once I finally made it to my vehicle and drove to my in-laws house I finally witnessed the fatal tragic events that had occurred previously that day. Over and over again the tapes we're repeated non-stop to glorify how horrific the 'attack' was. Watching further as Peter Jennings was reporting a terrorist group by the name of "Al Qaeda" had taken responsibility for the attack. Right away I said outloud the definition of the group name.. 'the base'. It hit me then that arab's general will have a very negative generic view, especially muslims. I felt history was the present --- meaning racism was about to re-surface not for blacks or whites but for muslims and arabs. I immediately recalled the movie 'The Seige' with Denzel Washington and remembered the camps set-up in that movie that held arabs and muslim arabs alike.... the same idea that Adolf Hitler had set-up when the Nazis we're in grand control. I just prayed that these events would never become reality, however they slowly are whether the citizens of this country like it or not. One man's anger and hositility to this country has instilled so much fear in everybody's heart. Now whenever I tell people my name, they ask where it comes from and then ask me my opinion on 9/11. My opinion is simple, ignorance leads to war. As it stood, the United States was a divided country before the attacks even occured. This country thrived on contraversy and other people's downfall, but the events of almost an hour had changed the way this country now operates with the enhanced security measures that millions of civillians face each day at airports or federal buildings. Millions we're angered that day... angered because we view ourselves as the almighty and wondering how all this could happen... well we aren't, despite our present day technologies and advancements. I had heard rumors of planes flying into the World Trade Center towers. I had little to no clue what the buildings were but I knew they were big buildings. I didn?t believe the rumors of the planes I thought how on earth could fighter jets fly into two huge buildings. Our school district prohibited the faculty from saying anything, which greatly angered the students, but one teacher allowed the students to look on the Internet for minute-by-minute updates. It was later confirmed by a teacher that airliners hit the buildings. The confusion going through my head was, oh my god there were innocent people on those planes. By that time the towers had also collapsed. I was so confused, and trying to comprehend what was going on while also trying to get through the day. I had no idea what I was about to watch on the TV, and what I was about to realize. When I first walked in the door and turned on the TV I said "thousands of people had to of worked in those buildings..." My oldest brother was attending college at the University of Pittsburgh. The news was reporting a plane down in Pittsburgh; I immediately went into a panic. My family had tried contacting him and his friends were already on their way home. I panicked and just needed a break, away from the news and my family and from the world. I had no idea what effect this event would have on my life and me. I did not know anyone who was killed in the attacks but I was still effected. To this day I think about it everyday and I am still in disbelief of what happened. I am traveling to Europe this summer as a Student Ambassador. My goal is to help the Europeans learn to know what it was like on that horrific day for Americans. I am determined to stand up for the United States and show as many foreigners what it was like.
