Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My wife and I were renting a cottage in Cape Cod for the week, celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary. I was the Director of Operations for the Victor-Farmington Volunteer Ambulance Corps, in Victor, NY at the time, and had assigned my deputy to manage things there while I was away. We arrived on September 9th, Sunday, and spent September 10th at Marconi beach on Cape Cod. I remember that we specifically noticed the jets coming and going over the ocean, a constant stream of traffic. When we got up on the 11th, we were preparing to go to Eastham to shop, and we got a call from our oldest daughter, who was at work when the first plane hit the WTC. She had driven home in a panic, not knowing what else to do. We immediatly turned on the TV, to see the developing story on TV. I also realized somehow that as the head of an EMS agency in New York, I and my Corps would be getting involved somehow, but couldn't imagine what we could do. I called the president of the Corps, and learned that all ambulance agencies in NY had been put on standby, and that a list of volunteers ready to travel to the WTC had been put together. I detemined that things were under control at home, and that my wife and I would continue our vacation. That day, and evening as we went to different places on Cape Cod, people had changed from the day before. We were asked, and were asking, if stranger's families were OK. People just struck up conversations, and the thirst for more news was amazing. That night, we sat at the beach, and stayed there while the sun set. It was remarkable because there were no planes in the sky, compared to the day before. We saw meteors, satellites, and it was very quiet. We went home well after dark. The next day, we went on a planned whale watch trip out of Provincetown, MA. It was fun, and we saw numerous whales. At one point on our way back to port, we started hearing jets. As it got louder, everyone stopped talking and started looking around. Suddenly, there were two fighter jets overhead. They made a slow circle around the ship in formation, and then headed southeast towards the Cape. It was a stark reminder of what had happenned. After we got home, it was only a week or so before we got the call. The FDNY had called for assistance with standby units for the Hot Zone and Ground Zero, and Ontario County's turn came up. I put together a crew of 6, including myself, and we started planning to go to New York. I had specifica criteria for making up crews. They all had to be certified EMT's, clean backgrounds, with no physical or breathing porblems. Also, they had to be mature persons, in order to obey the strict rules in place, and to bear the possible emotional burden of the job. I sent my list to the county, which sent the combined list to the State DOH to run background checks. When we were sent, we didn't know what our assignment would be. We could be at Ground zero looking for bodies, manning staging areas, or running calls in Manhatten. We simply had no idea, but had to be ready, with work gloves, respirator masks, etc. We traveled in a convoy with 5 other ambulances from the Ontario County Training facility, where we had received last minute instructions, and a few encouraging words from some Town supervisors, and we went to NYC. We arrived around 11:30PM, and went to the main staging area at Chelsea Pier. we were put into the hands of a FDNY lieutenant, who assigned us our radio, and our unit designator, 71D, or seven-one-David. We were to have two shifts, with 3 EMT's on each shift. I was on the first shift with my Tuesday night Partner from back home, and a Medic who had already been to the WTC site a couple of times before, including in the days immediately after the atrocity. The other crew had to make their way to the hospital ship USNS Comfort, which would be the off-duty location for all crews. We were sent first to South Staging. This was in Battery Park City, south of the site. On the way south, we were going down Broadway when we first saw and smelled Ground Zero. The odor of burnt metal, hot metal, plastic, wood, etc. was overpowering, as the wind was blowing it toward us, and the interesting thing is that the smell changed as one moved to different places. Mostly the smell of hot metal and electrical things, sometimes with a sulphurous component, it is something I will always remember. Although I've not smelled anything like it since, some smells can take me right back there, drivving south on Broadway, with all the traffic, noise, smoke, and floodlights. After we got to South staging, all the ambulances were in a small fenced in lot. there was a trailer there, with another FDNY lieutenant, and he told us to just stay put, relax, and wait for an assignment. Some of us realized that the Statue of Liberty should be visible from there, and we grabbed binoculars. She was quite visible, glowing green, with her golden torch. It was only the second time I had seen her, and it seemed very symbolic that she was intact, and lit up for the world to see. In fact, all of New York city was lit up, and I got no sense of a city under siege. People who weren't involved at Ground Zero went on their way, and it was very good to see this. The press coverage made it seem like NYC was shutdown, but it was very much alive and functioning. We got an assignment to go to Vesy and West around 2AM. We followed an FDNY gator over cleared roads and sidewalks, driving over a plaza at one point, and at one point we passed by a pile of destroyed ambulances. This was very sobering, as we all knew how much effort it is to keep a single working ambulance on duty, and here were dozens, just wrecked and empty. We set up right in front of the American Express building, about a half block from the temporary morgue. We were looking at the wreckage, and listening to the constant radio traffic around 3AM when suddenly the whole scene changed. We didn't know until a little later that two firefighter's bodies had been found. A priest walked into the scene, and later walked out, followed shortly by an FDNY ambulance. As it passed, everyone, including us, stood at attention, and saluted. Around 3:45AM, an FDNY officer came around and gathered everyone up and we formed an honor guard. The two fallen firefighters were brought out of the morgue, and into an FDNY ambulance. We were called to attention, and maybe 10 motorcycles roared up. They escorted the ambulance from the scene, and we were dismissed. Everyone went back to the job at hand. About 6:00 AM, we were called to do a transport. An iron worker had twisted his ankle coming off of the pile, and needed to go to the hospital. We got him in the rig, and transported BLS to St. Vincents'. After the transport and the paperwork was done, we went back to Vesey and West. It turns out we were supposed to go to staging, so we were sent to North Staging. This was three blocks from Ground Zero, and was where the trucks carring debris were coming in and out. Where we were parked, we were close enough to smell the "Ground Zero" smell from the trucks carrying steel, concrete, rebar, wires, etc. past us. We stayed at North Staging for the rest of our duty shift. After we were relieved, our second crew showed up, and we made our way to the Comfort. That was really the second part of the whole trip, which I will write about later. But, our short time at Ground Zero affected all of us who went. Being able to help out in a small way, and being part of FDNY's response was incredible. We met so many true heroes, and were able to experience firsthand the scenes that all of the world were watching. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just gotten to work when everyone in the office started running to the radio. I heard that a plane had hit the World Trade Center, and they were saying it may have been an accident. Then the second plane hit, the broadcaster started screaming, and everyone in my office just stopped breathing. Tears flooded my eyes, and I felt as if I was going to pass out. My first intuition was to call my family and make sure they were ok, but I couldn't walk away from the radio. I had to see it on tv, I had to make sure this was real and not some nightmare. A couple of my co-workers and I ran to the lobby of the hospital, where CNN runs 24 hours a day. I couldn't beleive my eyes...the bulidings were on fire, debris falling, peole screaming. then I saw it live; I witnessed a human being jumping to their death. And I felt faint. Tears just poured out of my eyes. Strangers were hugging each other, crying in each others arms. WHen the first tower fell, my soul went with it. I couldn't stop thinking about everyone who parished as I was watching. I watched thousands of people die, and could'nt do anything to help. I remember going numb, and being scared that the world was going to end; the Pentagon was attacked, then the plane in Pennsylvania. What was next? On my lunch break I sat and watched CNN again, just staring into the TV screen, wanting to leave and drive to New York...help in any way I could. I watched people running for their lives, covered in dust and debris, bloody bodies on the street, reporters hiding in buildings. It all felt like a bad movie turned into reality. And all I could think of those next days after were the people who perished, whose families would never see them again, and who had to die because of someone else's ignorance. Still to this day I'm not right, Every single day I think back to that day and want to cry. I went to New York in January, and saw Ground Zero, it was almost too much for me to handle. I was standing on thousands of peoples graves. I said a prayer and asked God to look after the families that lost someone that terrible day. This past September 11th was a bad day for me, I woke in the morning to recollections of the day a year ago, saw images I was hoping to forget about, heard more stories from the families of the victims. I'm at a new job now, and this year the company president held a party to honor those who lost their lives, and the heroes who saved so many. As long as I live I will never forget September 11th, I will never be able to erase those images out of my head. I am now more greatful for family and friends, and now treat each day like it will be my last. You never know when it will be your turn. I thought it bluw up. Then you see something and the seconed bilding a plain o my god is all i could think. I stud in shock. Then all i could think of was my family. People i no and some i am very close with work in or near there. Allso i needed to have my kids home. So i went and got them all. then i tryed and tryed to find out how every one was.We were so lucky every one was fine.but i still was in a state of shock. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was sitting in my Human Geography class, watching Ferris Bueler's Day off, when the news struck. We turned off the movie and turned on the news. We didn't really comprehend was was happening, at first we thought the plane hitting the WTC was an accident. Then the second plane hit, on national telivision we watched as america was tested to its extreams. I was shocked. A few moments later, the bell rang and the school halls were filled in seconds, however there was somthing different about that few moments in the hallway, it was quiet. The usually noisy hallway, full of clutter and chit-chat was silent. It was the silence of confusion, no one knew what was happening, but somthing hit us hard. The rest of the day was like anyone elses in the United States. Confusion soon turned into concern, concern into panic, panic into depair. Our hearts were torn at the seem, and the blood of patriotism was spilled all around. With such a devistating tradgety on our hands, i believe america emerged as a new nation, hand in hand with all races and genders alike. All those measly political issues and enviornmental uproar was silenced. Nothing has made me more proud to see the american flag posted on every overpass on the highways. America deserves one huge pat on the back, for we emerged victorious. The way 9/11 affected me the most is loosing one of my teachers. She, too, fell victim of the tradgeties, however did not loose her life. She had to drive an hour and a half each way to work, every day, for an entire school year. 9/11 affected her greatly, and she felt a sense of lonliness, when fear struck at the heart of america, she was nowhere near home. She needed to feel a sense of family, so she moved to a school closer to her home town. She was such an inspiring teacher, a great person. West Springfield misses her greatly, and thats what i think about when i think about 9/11. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I first learned of the attacks around 7:30 in the morning, Pacific Time, after both towers had already fallen. I was in my car on my way to work at Microsoft in Redmond, WA when the reports came over the radio that we were under attack and that the Twin Towers no longer stood. At first, I was furious at the radio station I was listening to for telling such a cruel joke. I thought that the announcers and reporters were acting out a play similar to The War Of The Worlds and I kept waiting for someone to come on and tell me where the play would be playing locally...but no such message ever came. As I got to work, I raced up to the television set in my office and turned on the Today Show, which had broken it's taped coverage and was broadcasting LIVE from New York. They showed the planes crashing and towers falling, the fires at the Pentagon and in Shanksville and reporters covered in ash tried to keep their composure as they tried to get a grip on this. Being in Washington, I felt very removed from it all, but also incredibly connected. Most people immediately left work and headed back home where they could watch the continuing reports with their families. The whole thing felt like a horrible nightmare. People in Seattle were fearful of an attack on the Space Needle or Microsoft or any sort of turmoil. We lit candles, came together in schools and parks, and held each other close. Complete strangers were as close and compassionate as old friends. Thousands of tears were shed for the victims and heroes who died and even more were shed for those who had lost loved ones and friends. I was insanely angry at those cowards who used our own openness and freedoms against us for no other reason than they didn't like us, but I took great comfort and relief in what I saw within this country. For the first time in a long time, this country came together in solidarity and unity. For the first time in a long time, we were truly the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. The terrorists tried to break us and tear us into fragments of fear, but they only made us stronger, braver, and more resiliant. I'm not a religious man, but I have prayed hard for America and for what has been lost. I can only hope that we never forget what was lost and what happened to us as a people and as a country. The first thing I did was grab my 3 year old and held her to me so close and didn't let her go for a long time. She asked me what was wrong and I told her "nothing sweety I just love you so much and wanted to hold you and cuddle with you." She asked why I was crying and I said that a lot of people were hurt today and I was sad that I couldn't do anything about it. She just gave me a big hug and told me that it was alright. I will never forget that day as long as I live. My cousin was working at the Pentagon at the time and all I could think was "Oh my! Please let Eric be alright. I was so relieved to hear that he was not there at the time." Then I felt guilty because of the people who lost there loved ones and my loved one was safe. I remember sitting in my class room when our principal came on with an anouncement, that the twin towers had benn just hit by a plane. We were told to turn on our tv's and we started watching what was going on. We were watching the tv when the second plane hit the second tower. I was in disbelief I could not believe what I was seeing. The whole day in school all we done was watched the tv on the attacks. As I sat and watched the tv i could not believe what was happening, and how it could be happening. My boyfriend(at the time) his mom lived in New York and was on the sidewalk on her way to work when the Towers were hit. I have everything that happened in New York that day on a video that she was recording at the time on this day. I have pictures that you wouldn't believe what they look like. She took me pictures of every thing that happened. I have every article on the september 11 attacks that i will give to my kids when they are old enough to understand. I have since been to New York and I Had been there before it all happened. And New York now looks so bare in the spot the towers once stood. we are truly blessed to have the troops in Iraq fighting for us. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Around 8:30 A.M. I could hear my step-dad calling me and telling me to come downstairs. Was he crazy? Did he not know what time it was? I am not a morning person and am extremely grumpy until about 2 hours after I have woken up. I ignored him and went back to sleep. Around 11:30, I heard him calling me again. The phone had been ringing non-stop, but I figured if it was important, that he would come to my room and force me to wake up. Which is exactly what he did. My step-dad came knocking on my door and told me to come downstairs right away. I told him I would be right down. I literally rolled out of bed and stumbled downstairs like a drunk person. My eyes were still half closed. I went into the living room and said, in a very frustrated and annoyed tone of voice,"What?" He told me to look at the t.v. I looked and saw an image of building in smoke. I was outraged. I was outraged that he would wake me up to come downstairs to look at a burning building. I looked at him with dagger eyes and said, "Are you kidding me? You woke me up for this!" And he says, "Sylvia, the World Trade Centers were hit by airplanes." Keep in mind that I was still half asleep and I could not understand why this should matter to me. My step-dad realized this and repeated himself, "The World Trade Centers were hit by airplanes. They collapsed and thousands of people have died. The Pentagon was hit as well. (at this point I was starting to wake up). It was a terrorist attack." Once he said that, I froze. I looked at the t.v again. Images of the plane hitting the second tower was being replayed over and over again. They showed people running from the debris. People covered in soot were shown. The most haunting image that I saw was a man jumping from the building. He was just sailing through the air. That was when I started to grasp how huge this was. My eyes began to tear over. This could not be happening? Who would do something like this? Why would anyone do this? Seeing images of people crying made me cry. I cried for the people who lost their lives. I wondered how scared they must have felt and the thoughts that must've run through their minds. I began to sob when I heard replayed messages from victims who had called their families knowing that they were going to die. That brought a pain to me that I have never felt before. Although I did not know these people, I wept for them as if they had been part of my very own immediate family. Later that day I went to work. I worked at a restaurant at the time, and it was almost completely empty. All of the employees were surrounded by the t.v. in the bar area. No one was speaking. American flags were soon seen EVERYWHERE. People were rallying together in downtown Sacramento and vigils were being held all over the place. You couldn't get away from the coverage no matter how hard you tried. September 11th made me look at the world and at the human race in a completely different way. I had never known that there were people in this world with such hatred that they could commit such a heinous act. Of course I knew about the Holocaust and slavery and all of that stuff, but I had only read about those things. To actually be alive when something like this happens, brings about a different perspective. I looked at my life in a different way. I had never thought about how lucky, how privileged I was to be an American. I had taken so many things for granted, right down to my residence. Now, I am proud to be an American. Not that I intentionally wasn't before, but I had never thought about it because I didn't appreciate it. My heart and my prayers go out to the families of the victims of 9/11. My love goes out to all Americans. We all suffered this tragedy, just some more than others. True I was nowhere near New York, The Pentagon, or in the field in Pennsylvania but my soul was tortured just the same. My husband is in the army and selfishly all I could think of was he would have to go away. I was getting our youngest daughter ready for a play day at church when the phone rang. It was my husband. He told my to turn on the tv. I asked him what was wrong and he said a plane had hit WTC. My first thought was that it was just an accident. I went ahead and took my daughter to church and was about to go shopping when it was announced over the radio that the second tower had been hit. I got what I needed at the store and got my youngest child then stopped by my oldest daughter's school and picked her up, there were no questions asked as to why I wanted her home. I came home and turned on the tv and cried the rest of the day. As I said my husband is in the army, so I called him to see if he knew anything. He said it would be very late when he came home that night because they had to secure the base. And indeed it was very late when he came home. I don't think I have ever hugged and kissed my family as much as I did that day. My mom and dad had left early that morning from my home to return to their home in Alabama. They don't listen to the radio when they are traveling and have no cell phone. It seemed like forever before mom called to say they had gotten home. I asked her if they had heard the news and she asked what news. I told her to turn on the tv and she did. She had no idea what had happened. We cried together on the phone for what seemed like forever. I know my story sounds very pale in comparison to what the people who lost loved ones, friends, etc. but it is my story just the same. God protect those poor souls who lost their lives and God especially be with the family members of those lost. But most of all God be with us. The blurbs through the radio station "One of the World Trade Center towers has been hit....by something....this just in..." My mind raced, my heart sunk, something was very, very wrong. In utter confusion, I got up to the office I worked in and asked, "What is going on?!". Nobody that was already in the office even knew what was happening but quickly tuned into the radio or internet. Our governor enforced a lockdown on all the state agencies within the metro area and those considered high-risk, were evacuated. Then he ran downstairs and turned on the TV and showed me that the second plane had just hit. At this point I started to get scared that somehting might happen where I live. My Dad was trying to call my brother, Jack, who was in the army and in Washington D.C. during the attacks. He couldn't get a hold of my brother so then he called my mom at work. After this I witnessed as the other plane hit the Pentagon, at this point I began to become frantic wondering if my brother was in the Pentagon. After this I went to school all the while listening to the radio in the car, listening to the announcers describe the attacks and the plane that was still missing. When I got to school we didn't talk about it at all during my 1st period, I couldn't believe that we were acting as if nothing was happening. The voice of our principal came over the announcements. "Please turn your classroom televisions to channel five immediately, the students will be heading home momentarily." Before this we had heard a distant rumble, but all that was made was somone saying "What was that?", and the teacher hushing him. The television was turned on and the class was full of suspense. I can't remember myself really being old enough to take much note of this event, but it had been a fairly amazing thing to have happened to me, just three miles away. On channel five, there was a news reporter shouting on a balcony with the image of the massive burning structure towering above the others on the horizon. Our teacher gasped and said "Oh my god!" I didn't really know what to think. I knew that building and had been to it before. I listened to the reporter shouting about how it might collapse and the plane flying into it. "Back to you Will" the reporter was out of breath. Now there was yet another reporter in front of yet another burning building. The newsman explained a terrorist jet had slammed squarely into the side of the famous building the Pentagon. I couldn't help but to feel shocked. My mind was racing trying to think of how or why somone would crash their plane to destroy hundreds of lives including theirs. Tears were streaming down my teachers face. This had to be something big. In a matter of minutes my dad cam to pick me up from my classroom. On the way home we could here the fighter jets zooming around the pentagon. I thought of all the lives that were lost and how it would be to be in New York. Thousands of innocent people, and a few terrorists who must of thought it was a good choice to make to sacrifice their lives just to kill Americans. It was not until I and my daughter were in a cab driving into Brooklyn that we learned what was happening and saw Tower 2 collapse from the vantage point of an expressway overpass. I'm a flight attendant and I was on a layover in Burbank, CA when my phone rang within minutes of the first impact at the World Trade Center. I rubbed my eyes, and turned on CNN, only to see the second aircraft flying directly into the second tower. At first I thought that this was a bad movie scene, and then I realize that this was real~~very real. Within minutes, my cell phone began ringing as did both pagers. I oversee our EAP (Employee Assistance Program) for the Association of Flight Attendants at Alaska Airlines, and I carry an emergency pager on behalf of this program and our airline. My pager read the first of MANY text pages of updates on cancellations, and eventually the complete grounding of the nations' aircraft. I knew that this was only the beginning. I wasn't concerned with the fact that I couldn't get home~~my concerns were with my brothers and sisters who gave their lives heroically on those four flights, as well as the loved ones they left behind. My concern then turned to my coworkers, and the fears that we were all facing of our occupations and the way that this horrific event has forever changed our careers, and what that continues to mean. Seven months after this infamous day, the fears have not subsided~~yet changed. If anything, as I put on my uniform and go to work, I do it for those who did the very same that fateful morning, not knowing that thier precious lives were soon to be cut short. I do it out of pride of who we are as Americans, and this great nation in which we live. I grieve for the "life" I've left behind, but I live for a future in which I know my freedom will be protected and preserved. I can recall that I had just returned home from dropping my 13 year old off at school and I sat on my bed with a cup of coffee to continue to watch the morning news on Fox as I did on a routinely basis during the weekdays. The news reporters were discussing the fact that a plane had just crashed into the Trade Center. I was sitting there listening and thinking to myself about how could this happen and that the airlines are getting just too scary for me to take a flight anywhere again. My initial thoughts were that it was some sort of mechanical failure. As I contiued to watch I noticed a second plane near the trade center. At first I thought it was a news reporter plane covering the crash sight, then all of a sudden that plane too crashed into the trade center. I gasped "Oh My God! What is going on? That was no accident." My response almost matched the response of the reporter on the t.v. It was so devistating to sit there and watch this happen.The next thing I knew I was sitting there sobbing, feeling pain for lives that were just lost. At that instant I think I was glued to the t.v. for what seemed to be six hours. Flicking from station to station trying to get as much information as I could that would somehow explain this horrible set of events. As the day went on my family and I seemed to be in shock and total dismay. At the same time it cause us to be that much more grateful for our lives and families and it also caused us to realize not to take anything or anyone for granted. We sat as a family together and just held eachother in silence. It is so unimaginable that something like this could happen in the united stated. "This type of thing just don't happen here". So we thought. To this day I can only imagine what the families of those stolen lives must be going through.I can only pray that God sooth their aching hearts. If there was anything possitive that resulted from this whole ordeal was that the people of the united states were truely united at that time. It didn't matter what color, race, age, religion you were I belive that mostly everyone became a little closer to their fellow american. This was a devistating wake-up call to america and how vulnerable we all are. Also a test of our unity as a whole. After all we are the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11th, 2001 was a morning to remember. The day started with a clear,crisp smell to the air and a sky that was a perfect shade of blue. I can remember looking up into the cloudless blue and thinking, what a day to be alive.... It was between 10:30 and 11 am that I received a phone call from my daughter-in-law, Paulette. She was screaming, "We are under attack, the World Trade Center is falling and the Pentagon has been hit by hi-jacked planes." I didn't believe her, that could never happen here, not in our country, not America. Then I turned on the tv, the towers were fallin. It was all true. All I could think of was that everyone had made it out in time, and then I saw the smoke and debree flying everywhere. I knew then that many people were dying. Since that day our nation has changed, we are more united than ever before. My hopes and prayers are with all the young men and women who must now put their lives at risk to rid the world of people like Osama Bin Ladan and Suddam Hussan...
