In my first hour I heard some stuff about it but I didn't think anything of it I thought they were talking about some movie. When I went to my second hour that's when it hit me thats when I was realized what really happened. Because my foods/nutrition teaher had the news on and when I walked into the room I just started to watch it. I Couldn't belive that, that would happin. I didn't think that it was true in till the live footage popped up on the screen. I was able to see the second plane crash into the trading center then when I saw that I was shocked. Then it was only 20 min or so later when you could actually see the building start to calaps all that debris every were. I thought that the camera man was going to get hit with parts of the building flying everywere he was so close to it trying to get good footage for us. And they did i was so dazed into the tv when the camra man slipped over somthing i thought i was acturlly there.But my class had ended so I had to go. When I got home I wached more of it. Living in las-vegas was really hard at this time I lived with my sister and her husben. In las-vegas that's all the work we have up there is cunstrution working and casino working at the strip. This was not a good time for vacation people to go on vacation but thats were people in vegas get all their money . Alot of people were getting laid off all my friends parents were getting laid off things were very poor for a while my sisters husben got laid off his work but we were very lucky he was able to get a job the very next day. When I walked to school I was able to see the strip the thought always passed my mind that they were going to take out the new york new york on the strip. I have never saw the lights off on the strip untill this happin the was the first time ever that the lights were turned off. It was my 4th hour of the day in 8th grade, and i went into that class just expecting another noisy day as always. Then him being the US History teacher and always having the tv on, he already knew what was happening. (Now at this point in life, i didn't know what the world trade centers were or what they were used for so i was just confused about what was going on.) When we started watching the second towers wasn't hit yet, it was right after the first one had gotten hit. When i asked my friends what the Trade Centers were, i was more confused about what was going on, like why somone would want to do this? Also, it wasn't until later i really know how many could've died and how many that did die. The whole class was silent while watching the news. (This was the only time i ever saw the whole class not talking, but just looking at one thing, the teacher never ever told them to stop talking eighter.) While we were watching the class saw a reporter standing inside the pentagon tlkaing to people about the tragedy and there was a loud and shaking Boom. They didn't know what it was, but they all still evacuated the building. Then somone taped a shot from outside of the pentagon and it showed it in flames. That day i wondered and still do, why would someone do this to our country. Why would lives be given to take more, there is no increase into what you are doing. They only thing what you have done is make our country stronger then you ever could've thought. I hope that nothing ever happens in this country like this ever again. I woke up at 4:30 a.m because I had to open up the healthclub that I worked at. I remember how beautiful the morning was. I got to work around 5:25 a.m, twenty minutes early, So I would have time to eat breakfast. When I finished my breakfast I turned all of the television's on. I put them on all of the news stations because the club is in the financial district in Boston. The majority of the members are business people who like to watch CNN, MSNBC, FOX News as well as the local news. They would always watch the news while they exercised so they would know what was going on in the world. Everything was normal until around 8:50 a.m when one of the stations that was on said that there was a fire at the World Trade Center. At first no one thought anything of it until they showed Tower 1 on fire with a huge whole in it's side. The anchor then said that either a missile or a plane hit the tower. When they said it was a plane everyone thought it was a terrible accident until we saw the other plane hit Tower 2 right before our eyes. Then we heard about the Pentagon being hit and seeing the video of it on fire. I will never forget the look on everyone's faces that were there. Everyone was just in shock. We could not believe what we were seeing. By that point no one was working out. Everyone was watching the T.V's. Everyone stood there watching until both towers were gone. It felt like an eternity standing there watching everything unfold. To this day I still think about what happened. It is still fresh in my mind how such a beautiful day turned into such a nightmare. One of the many things that I learned on September 11th is that life is to short to take things for granted. Live for today because you never know when you will be gone. Take the time to tell someone you care about that you love them. I am very proud of how this country came together after everything that happened. I have never been more proud to be an American. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I awoke early on this morning as I needed to Chair my first PTA meeting at Thurston Middle School in Laguna Beach. I was the incoming PTA President. We held meetings every second Tuesday of each month. I had stayed up late to type the agenda the night before September 10th and that morning my printer was down so I was busy battleing that minor annoyance. My 7 th Grader son Sam was busy getting himself together and I got the brilliant idea that we would sit down with candles and silence ( no TV or radio ) and eat breakfast together. Sam and I had no awareness that the world had gone mad around us. We sat and ate a peaceful breakfast and then we drove to the school and I remember feeling excited about my preparation for the upcoming meeting. Sam and I parted outside the office and I went in to use the copy machine only to be confronted by the secretary Erin, who looked stunned and scared, I remember I said," what has happened , is someone dead? " Erin looked at me and she was shocked at my response. She then said," you really don't know, a plane went into the WTC in New York." I was horrified, I said " Was it an accident ? " Just then the school counselor came in and said there had been another plane in the other WTC and something about the Pentagon, I knew then that it was Arab terrorists. I had been in Europe during the years of IRA terror car bombings, the bombings of restaurants and the hijackings of various airlines in the 1970's and the Pan Am bombing over Lockerbie, Scotland...It was a revisit with terrible implications...I was devastated and I did not know how to proceed...It was my first experience at Chairing any meeting...I will always remember this because I came from creating a peaceful morning ritual into the gates of hell within an eleven minute ride into the school office...My normal mornings are hectic and the TV News is always on and the radio in the car gets me information as I drive... I was both horrified and rendered powerless in the aftermath of that morning last year... I came to America in 1976 to escape Bader Meinhoff, Black September, Red Brigade, Ira and numerous other terrorist organisations...only to have it all begin again in the year 2001. I had lost my father in November 2000 and I was still grieving the loss not yet a year old.. My firstborn son Adam had just left for school the week before and he was out hiking in the wilderness. The school told his group about the hijackings but not all the details and he called me upon his return a few days later devastated by the reality that they had not yet faced. I drove up the next day to be with him as he was not only shocked but afraid about the prospect of war. He was and remains concerrned for his future and that of his generation... I am currently still on the PTA, not as President, and today was the one year anniversary of 911,it was also the first meeting of the year. I am now the school's Librarian. I had a lot of feelings about this day and rememberance and I would like to add that "man lives by faith and hope and love, by the star on the horizon and by the trumpet that will not call retreat."( E. Merrill Root ). We can go on and live lives that are meaningful and we can remember those who perished with love and appreciation for their lives and remember that we are here to celebrate whatever time we have and after we have left, our friends, family and sometimes strangers remember our names and our faces...We are all part of a vast universe that will not support the violence that we reserve for each other. I simply cannot express the pain that I feel knowing how helpless we are to prevent human suffering and the desire to make others responsible and to cause great harm and further suffering. I think that I was so sure both my sons would be born and raised in America far away from the ravishes of war and destruction. September 11 changed that dream forever ...it was a 25 year hiatus..I am grateful to be alive nevertheless..I am forever changed by my experience that morning.. I had no idea what had happened until the end of the school say. I went to soccer practise right after school, where my coach told my team that two planes had hit the World Trade Centers. I didn't think much of this since I was unaware of what the World Trade Centers were. I felt sympathy for all of the people who had died on the planes, but figured the crashes were just an accident. When my mom came to pick me up, she told me that something had happened in New York and that there was something I needed to see on TV when I got home. The first thing that came to my mind was whether or not my best friend, who lives in Far Rockaway, NY was alright. I was scared and confused at the same time. As soon as I got home, I turned on the TV and was in total shock. I couldn't believe what was happening. I never would have thought anything like this would happen in our country. My mind was racing with different thoughts and emotions. I couldn't believe anyone would do such a thing. And the innocent people who had died had families just like mine. I came to realize that life is never going to be perfect and not everyone will like each other in our society. Septemeber 11th has changed my life completely. I am so grateful to be living in a country that stands strong and never gives up hope. I've never felt so proud as I do now to be living in the United States, a place so beautiful and diverse that nothing can stand in its way. I think that the firefighters and people who have donated money and helped out the families and victims on September 11th should be remembered. So I immediatly turned on the TV and watched was happening to this country. I did not move from my room the whole day.The next day I did the same thing.It was horrible, I cried the whole day, called my mom becasue she works at OHare airport in Chicago. I have never cried as much in that week than I ever have before.The thing that bothers me the most about this tragedy is that the people who tell us not to go to war, that is not the answer.What is the answer. If we could sit down peacefully and talk to the certian group of people who committed these crimes then we would. But that is not possible, the only way we can communicate with them is by war and harm because that is how they were taught and raised. They don't care if they die, they want to die. You can't help people who don't want to be helped.You can't talk to people whos main purpose in life is to kill people because that will send them to a better place.I know that justice will be served and even though we cannot bring back the men, women, and innocent children that perished that day, I just want to tell everyone that the real heroes in America are those innocent people who died on the 11th and the people who are fighting and risking their lives for ours right now and ever since that horrible day. They will always be remembered. That day and those people will never be forgotten and never should. I heard a saying that I try to live by. you are born on a date and you die on a date but it is that dash in between those two dates that really matters. On the morning of 9.11.01, I was getting ready to go to a hair stylist's appointment. I turned on the radio for the news and the morning talk shows. It took a while for my brain to bend around the idea that we were under attack. I thought at first it was like _War of the Worlds_, fake. But then I turned on the tv and I saw. I made the appointment only to be with other people, we were really scared. We thought it was the end of the world. My son was in school, and my husband at work. I wanted to go down there (to Ground Zero) to help but I was currently under contract at a local hospital and my family needed me. Two weeks later I found out that the first airplane that hit the tower held my cousin Madeline Amy Sweeney, (we called her Amygirl and I knew her as Amy Todd), who was a stewardess and an American Heroine, (my Dad had never checked his email). My Uncle Bill, her Dad, is a distinguished veteran who never believed he would lose his daughter in the line of duty. After that, the tape of her conversation was physically painful. This event changed my worldview. It made me value freedom and liberty as never before and gave me an edge towards those who would take it for granted and dismiss it as secondary to their agenda and their lives. I have not been to Ground Zero yet, although it is really not too far away. When I see it on tv, I still cry. I am very proud of my fellow citizens, especially the people of New York City. They demonstrate the American Spirit at its best. President Bush has earned my respect and admiration as has former Mayor Rudy Guiliani, and Gov. Pataki. On my birthday, as I renewed my driver's license, I changed my political party affiliation. I was a junior in high school at the time, going to my second class. The time was around 10:15 and I noticed that the weather outside was particularly cloudy and gloomy. My next class was weight training, so I changed in the locker rooms into my gym uniform and headed over to the weight room. Once I entered the room I decided I would start my exercise session on the treadmill at the cardiovascular section, which had a television set where we could watch anything we wanted. I expected to see an ordinary movie when the T.V. turned on; however, the first thing I saw was not a movie but an emergency news report of a plane crashing into the Twin Towers. At that moment I knew something was wrong, but the news just did not quite sink in for me yet. Everyone else who was in the classroom was fixated on the coverage and had a look of shock on their faces. To me, it only felt like a scene from the movies, something that just doesn?t happen because I had never seen anything like this before in my life. Class ended soon after and I began heading to my next one. It seemed that I was one of the first people in my school to hear about the event, since while I was walking to my next class no one that I passed in the hallways seemed to have mentioned anything related to the news. Oddly enough I wondered why the school had not at least made a public announcement yet; I?m sure that by now a few of the school administrators must have already been contacted about the news. After my next class started an announcement finally came. Our principal told the entire school that the Twin Towers were hit by two airplanes, but not much else was known yet. He tried to reassure everyone not to panic or be stressed, and reminded that one of the safest places to be was in the school. Once the announcement was over there was a sudden air of agitation that formed, and my English teacher turned on the television to show the news report that was still similar to the one I had already seen. She then told turned it off and said, ?I know we are all very worried and concerned but the only thing we can do at this very moment is to go on with class.? It would appear that that was the way most teachers and people dealt with the situation that day. Nothing else could be done. School continued until we finally got dismissed that day. I remember school being cancelled the day after, and my parents did not have to go to work either. We ended up spending most of our day watching T.V., hungry for any kind of news update that was constantly being released. After I saw the clips of the Twin Towers crumbling and people who were screaming and desperately trying to evacuate, I finally fathomed what happened. A mass of innocent people who had done absolutely nothing wrong were killed, and many more had to put up with the loss of these loved ones. I had a sudden strike of guilt for taking so long to comprehend the tragedy, and feelings of resentment quickly developed for those responsible for such a horrific act. The worst feeling I had was not being able to do anything about the situation ? I felt helpless. It is now three years later and words like Osama Bin Laden, Al Qaeda, and terrorism have never been the same since then. I realized that this is what it felt like to become a part of a history textbook, going through our own version of Pearl Harbor. Everyone I knew living in the United States before 9/11 was completely ignorant to these acts of terrorism that have been occurring around the world, especially those from my generation. Those are the words I most remember from that tragic day in September of 2001. I woke up that morning thinking it would just be a normal day: go to school, learn, come home, and sleep. But when I turned on the TV that morning, I found out I was wrong. I was the first one up in my house on 9/11, and turned on the TV, procastinating about getting ready for school. The channel that came up first thing had the news on. I immediately saw a huge tower, engrossed with smoke and fire. I didn't realize what I was watching until a couple minutes later when my mom came down and asked me what was going on. I remember thinking (but I'm not exatly sure if I said it), "I don't know. I think something crashed into the World Trade Center tower." Because she knew the significnce of the World Trade Center that I didn't, she automatically knew something was going on. I hesistantly got ready for school while watching the news until my ride arrived at my house. Right before I left my mom told me the Pentagon had been attacked as well. It wasn't something that could easily be out of mind for a while either; we watched TV and listened to the radio in every class of mine. I remember everyone being in a state of shock; we all just sat there, listening or watching, wondering what was going on, while the teachers busily watched and updated eachother on something they might not've seen. The most I remember from school that day was getting an uncountable amount of hugs and "I loves you's", out of the vulnerability we felt for being helpless. I got home that day and instantly turned on the news. I remember hearing that some of the planes were coming from Logan National Airport in Boston, Massachusetts. I automatically thought of my brother,Travis, who had recently moved there for college. I checked the messages on my answering machine and got one from my aunt, who also lived in Boston. I remember the tone in her voice when she told my mom and me, "Hey you guys, I just talked to Travis and he wanted me to tell you he's okay and everything's going fine. He wont be able to call you for a while because he's going to a couple of remembrances and discussions about it.That's about it. I hope you guys are okay. While I was there, I heard people talking about missing planes. I thought it was strange, but didn't pay alot of attention to it. (I had not turned on the TV or radio while getting ready for work). When I got to work, my co-worker, Nancy, looked so serious as she told me that she had brought a radio to work. This also seemed strange, as our office has digital music piped in. I asked her if the digital wasn't working. She replied that she wanted to be able to get news so that we could keep up with what was happening. I asked her what was going on. She looked at me like I was from outer space. She told me that we were under attack. I asked her "under attack? Who is attacking us?" She replied that we didn't know. I said, "Then how do you know we are under attack?" She said that the World Trade Towers had both collapsed. I simply could not believe what she was saying. I kept saying, "That's impossible. They are massive, I've seen them in person. A plane could not have collapsed them. You have to be pulling my leg." Finally she got the news on the radio, and I heard my first report of the disasters. I was stunned. It could not be possible. Each patient that came in that day couldn't stop talking about it. We even had several cancellations due to the attacks. I felt a heightened sense of awareness, and a sense of being numb all at the same time. I remember the blue of the sky, and no planes flying overhead. We are only about 60 miles from Chicago, so we always see planes. But not that day. Finally about 4:30, one solitary plane flew over, I found out later that it was President Bush. When I got home that night, I was glued to the TV, seeing for the first time, the total devastation being played over and over. It took a couple of weeks of seeing those images daily to make it real for me. Part of me still does not quite believe that those massive towers are gone. I was impressed by the way our leaders and politicians pulled together, forgetting who was Republican and who was Democrat, forging a united front for our nation. President Bush and Mayor Guilliani deserve a very special place in the history of our nation for the unflinching way they handled the crisis. One good thing that has come out of all of this is a renewed sense of patriotism, a sense that we are the "United" States of America. Suddenly, being American means so much more than it used to. My heart swells with pride as I drive down streets and still, one year later, see countless flags flying, where 13 months ago, there were none. It is gratifying to see all of the flags on the cars and trucks, whether as bumper stickers, or as flags on antennas and windows. We are a mighty nation. We saw our nation pull together to help each other through this unbearable time. My heart aches for those who lost friends and loved ones that day. I cannot imagine the pain they feel. We all know that we will lose loved ones, and that we too, will die. But to die in such a tragic, senseless manner, is shockingly horrific. It is almost too much to comprehend. My family and I are fortunate, we did not lose anyone personal that day. We only experienced the loss that the whole nation felt, not the personal grief of the victims families. The people on the flight that crashed in Pennsylvania are heros. They did not think of themselves, but instead, put the good of the nation ahead of their own survival. They chose the time and place that where the plane went down, greatly minimizing the loss of life to the people on the ground. How many more might have died that day if the terrorists had crashed the plane according to their plan? The police and firefighters and all emergency workers, who bravely kept going into the doomed buildings must never be forgotten. Their noble sacrifice saved thousands of lives. It takes a special kind of courage to run into a burning building. These brave men and women possessed that courage. In the midst of their overwhelming pain and grief, their families should be proud of them. They went above and beyond the call of duty. They are the true heroes of that day, and the weeks of search and rescue/recovery that followed. Tell us your story: My husband and I were and two of our friends were to leave on September 8, 2001, for a weeks vacation in St. Marten, in the Carrabean. However, my husband's Uncle died and we had to delay our trip due to his funeral. Our friends left as planned and we were going to join them on Tuesday, September 11th. Our American Airlines flight left Dallas, Tx. on time and was uneventful and we landed at Miami for what we thought would be a short layover and then on to St. Marten!! However, while walking down the Jetway, we overheard a flight attendant say that she just heard a plane had crashed into the tower! Our first thought was Oh my, here in Miami? As we reached the terminal we were told that our flight to St. Marten would be delayed. Then I went to where a lot of people were watching a TV. My husband found a table and decided to finish some work he had brought with him. The pictures on the TV were shocking and I ran back to my Husband and told him that the World Trade Center had been hit by a commercial jet liner. We both went and watched in horror as the second plane hit the second building. Then we heard that the Pentagon was hit and knew this was something very bad. In the terminal, armed Police officers were everywhere, some with dogs and then loud alarms went off (twice) and the Airport was locked down. I was glad that the airport had been locked down, but I wondered who was locked in with us? No one could get in and no one could leave. Security personnel were everywhere so my tension eased somewhat. We were told to go claim our luggage and since every plane was grounded the luggage claim area was total chaos. Thousands of pieces of luggage were being lined up against the walls and everywhere and it was anybody's guess where our flight was being unloaded. We gave up searching for our luggage and decided to go eat some lunch. Then I told my husband we need to get a room (if there were any) in the hotel there, since we knew we would be there all night. We were fortunate to get one of the last remaining hotel rooms and then went to the restaurant for a quick bite to eat. We went back to find our luggage, each of us starting at opposite ends of the baggage claim area and finally found all of it after searching for two hours. We went to our room and sat on the bed and watched the news and cried. We heard about the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania and I knew those people were heros. I felt that plane was surely enroute to Washington D.C. to hit the Capital. We called our Boys back in Dallas to let them know that we were ok. Then we talked to the American Airlines ticket agent to see when we would be able to leave, they didn't know as the FAA had grounded all flights. We called our friends in St. Marteen and they had heard the news but still wanted us to try and come, if only for a few days. I just wanted to be back home with my kids, but we couldn't leave. For three days we watched the news and prayed for all of those that lost their lives and for all the families that didn't know where their loved ones were. It was agony but we were thankful that we were ok and thanked the Lord for keeping us safe. On Thursday morning we were told that some flights might be able to leave that afternoon, so we stood in a mile long line to have our tickets changed to fly back home to Dallas. We were indeed able to leave but while waiting to board the 777, I began to get scared. I looked at everyone checking in and I told my husband that for the first time, I was really afraid to get on the plane and maybe we should have rented a car a drove home. He tried to comfort me with little success. As we boarded the plane I looked at every passenger. Some were pilots in their uniforms, all were very quiet. The flight attendants were all very nice but I was still extremly nervous. We landed in Dallas and our son picked us up. When I entered our home, I hugged all of my three sons and told them how much I loved them and began to cry, not for me, but for all those people that would never have a chance to hug their loved ones again. I felt blessed. My anger at what the terrorists did to us is as strong as it was one year ago and We will never forget where we were that horrible morning and we will never forget or stop praying for all those men, women, and children that were murdered September 11, 2001. I was getting ready to take my daughter to daycare and I myself was getting ready for school. I remember watching in horror as I sat on the telephone with my husband and my heart sinking further when I saw the next plane hit. Still in disbelief, or rather a false belief that people could still escape out of the tower, I took my daughter to school and I returned to the house to watch tv one more time. As I turned the tv on I witnessed the towers collapse. I was horrified and felt scared and immense sadness for the helplessness of the people that perished and their loved ones. I immediately called my family and friends. I set out for school, however upon arrival, I was informed that school had been cancelled. I anxiously drove to my daughter's school to pick her I up. I felt an intense need to be close to her and to hold her. As I drove home I learned of the Pentagon and the crash in Pensylvania. I felt under attack and suddenly very fearful of what the future of my daughter who was to turn two years old that Friday may hold. At home, I went outside of my house to be close to God, suddenly in appreciation of all that we, as individual people and as a nation stand for. To my surprise and much to my comfort, I saw my neighbors and mere strangers uniting. It was the most patriotic moment of my life. I suddenly understood what it meant to be united, what it means to be ONE NATION UNDER GOD. The strenghth, faith and pride that I gained from that day defeated the entire conquest of the terrorists. I now have a renewed appreciation of everything in my life and will not ever be afraid again. Everything that I do now, I do with meaning, for I learned about posterity. And although many perished, they did not die in vain. They rose from the ashes and united us as a nation, with no prejudices...no differences, just as loving, caring "human" beings. When I think about what I have to do today, tomorrow, the next day, I feel so selfish. I cannot help but think of the days ahead for those families of the victims. My life seems so immaterial now compared to the pain and anguish faced by those people. I tried to recollect the day?s events and remember my friend... I was just settling into my job, had not yet made the daily cup of coffee when my co-workers were buzzing with terrified excitement. Something horrible had just happened. An unfortunate accident. We all quickly logged into CNN...or tried too. Communications were slow...then the news hit...we all scrambling to the TV set in the conference room desperately seeking any bit of information to help us to understand what was happening. She worked out of Logan as a customer service rep. She had planned a brief trip to Las Vegas - The Venetian Hotel at that! She had called just a few days earlier to tell me of a last minute deal she found on the web! How lucky she was! ... She told me...a cancellation had occurred opening up a room in the hotel. I had forgotten the date she was flying so I expected her to be home or on her way home, since the airport had now been shut down. I was expecting to hear her voice but I just heard the phone ring. The answering machine was not picking up. ?She must be on her way home from work? I thought. I tried again in a while and heard the familiar ring. ?Nothing so tragic could ever impact my life or the lives of anyone I know? I naively thought. I took advantage of the offer from the president of the company to head home. I had valid concerns about the safety of my family in the event of an attack to the Boston area. No one really knew what to expect. No one expected this. I left and headed home. My mind wondering how this could have happened. My faith shaken at the absence of the love that has been professed to be bestowed on all. My stomach was sick. I had so much emotion yet I felt so empty. The sun was brightly shining as it hit the steps in front of me. I gazed at the colorful flowers that gracefully adorned the walkway. The sky was the perfect ?sky-blue? and there was not a cloud to be seen. It was quiet. Oh, what a perfect late summer day! That was my brief thought as I left the building. I was trying to appreciate the beautiful day that I wished so hard would linger long into the winter, as summer had been so short. But as I think about that, thousands of innocent people lay dead in the aftermath of the most horrific event in US history. I slowly made my way to my car. I could view the traffic as I walked. The expressway was certainly not that at all, as the traffic southbound had come to a halt. Even the northbound traffic was creeping along. I felt my face fall as my heart ached and my stomach turned. I along with everyone else was screaming for answers. None came. There was an unusually loud silence. I got in my car and started to drive. I wondered about the next step as I wondered what was still to come. I tried to cry but couldn?t. Tears could not wash away the pain or clear the sky of the cloud of smoke hovering over NYC. The tears were right there, but could not fall? It is amazing how such an event could cripple the US. It is amazing that human life is not respected. It is amazing that some people can celebrate the pain of a nation. I sit in traffic, not as bad as I expected but it gives me a chance to reflect, to sort out and try to understand. I look ahead and I see Old Glory flying gracefully atop a building, seemingly unaware of what was happening. The gentle breeze waves the fabric in a calm peaceful manner. The bright red, the crisp white and the royal blue are majestic against the ?sky blue? above. A quiet statement of strength. A patriotic reminder that we, as a nation, will survive. I felt a sense of peace creep between the rage and pain. I stopped at my mom?s house. I hugged her. Told her I was going to get my daughter from school. I was heading home and would call her later. I phoned the school and was informed as to how this act was being handled. The children were fine. All was as normal. That was good. I phoned my friend again. Someone answered the phone. I felt relief! I had forgotten how much she and her mother had sounded so alike on the phone. The words came through the receiver loud and clear, but somehow they took longer to reach me. ?She was on the plane? was all I heard. It echoed over and over. I had no words of comfort to offer. I felt helpless. What could I say even if words came to me? I offered myself to whatever extent needed and hung up. Tears broke and I wept deeply. I called my own mother. She wept with me. She then came to me to be here for me. I was trying to understand. Hoping it was not true, coming up with possible scenarios to place my friend out of harms way. Reality won. How do I explain to my child that my friend, the one who just a few short days prior took her to Disney World, who laughed and screamed as they plummeted down Splash Mountain, is among the passengers who faced their death with fear in their eyes? How do you explain to a child the mindset of people who have no regard for human life? I remember being glued to the TV. I could not help but long for hope. Please let there be some good news?let there be survivors! I morbidly waited as names were displayed across the networks. I still did not see her name. Maybe!..I hoped. It was a slow process and as the days passed and the lists became complete, her name appeared. Her name appeared on the news and in the newspapers and on every web-site that compiled information about 9/11. Although I knew she was on the plane, and I saw the list, I still hoped that she would be a survivor. I saw the planes fly into the towers and I saw the two towers tumble, yet I held on to the hope that there would be a survivor, a miracle beyond miracles. I watch and waited. I remember having trouble dealing with the reality of this tragedy as it was unfolding. Today I still cannot believe it. There is no closure. There never will be. My friend perished in the blaze aboard flight 11. She was a fighter and I am sure that she did what she could to prevent those men from trying to go into the cockpit. She had a first class seat. She was right there ? front row. I am sure that she stood up for what was right. She is a hero as all who were on that plane and the other planes are. As the plane crashed through the tower with what I can imagine as terrified faces of those aboard, I envision her smiling face. Her lively personality, her generous spirit, her laughter is what I think of. Her life was short. Life is short. I will remember this day as the longest in my life. I will remember my friend forever. We take phone calls for information purposes. At 8:55, after just logging onto the system, A call came over my headphones: "Information how may I help you?" (Person on phone): May I please have the number to United Airlines?" "Toll free?" "Yes- (Sound of Hysterical crying) Person on phone: "OH MY GOD, ANOTHER ONE'S JUST HIT THE TOWER! I THINK IT'S MY DAUGHTER'S!" ME: MA'AM WHAT IS HAPPENING? PERON ON PHONE: DIDN'T YOU JUST HEAR WHAT'S HAPPENED IN NY? ME- NO, WHAT IS IT? PERSON- A PLANE HAS JUST CRASHED INTO THE WORLD TRADE CENTER! ME- OH MY GOD! REALLY? PERSON- PLEASE GIVE ME THE NUMBER, I JUST HEARD THAT ANOTHER PLANE IS HIJACKED AND I THINK IT CRASHED TOO! PERSON - AAGGH! ITS A UNITED PLANE! Tell us your story: my husband and i were at the doctors office when the first plane strucj at the world trade center and were in shock and cried and especially the second one. it was horrible and people in some buildings where we were had friends there and were crying and some even drove there. then i am usually on call at my job to run the switchboard because there was no relief and the others were tired from all the calls coming in because we had also set up a blood bank there at childrens specialized hospital in mountainside new jersey and the calls were coming in like crazy and we did get some people in for trauma. that day was also something different because the people and some friends of mine were at the port in elizabeth new jersey could see the towers coming down and it was dramatic. there will always be a scar of what happened and at times i still cry because it was so heartbreaking and should of never happened. this is really a day to remember. never forget our fallen angels Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. Tell us your story: i walked into one of my patient's room and there on the tv were the details of the first plane crash being aired. i remember thinking how horrible that must of been for those people who were involved, dieing or dead. then all of the sudden the second airplane hit. i knew then it was no accident. i came out of the patient's room and told everyone at the nurses station what i had seen and heard. i called my dad at home and asked if he was watching the tv. he said no, i said turn it on, they are bombing New York with airplanes. later that day we heard of President Bush arrivial at Barksdale Air Force Base, which is about five miles from where i work. we all thought we would be in danger since we worked in a tall hospital. its was a scary day. the thing i thought about the most were the children on those planes. my oldest son, 15 then, has flown several times alone and all i could think about is what those poor children were feeling and the ones who were alone, how horrid. i had nightmares about that for awhile. my son has flown alone since because the terrorists will not win and will not dictate to this family.
