Tell us your story: It was a normal school day at Hawkes Bluff Elemantery with the skys nice and blue.At around 9:30 am our teacher said to us (having no clue as usual) a plane has crashed into the world trade center or the un building.Then over the pa system our principle said "do not turn on the tv to watch the tragedy". We didnt listen and went into another room with another class to watch. O nce we started watching it became apparent that both towers were hit. After that my mom came into our classroom and took me home. I wathced everything else unfold at home and it was frightening. We couldnt believe our eyes. I HOPE IT NEVER HAPPENS AGAIN. Tell us your story: I was getting ready for work and my daughter told me that someone had just flew into the trade center, I came out to see on the news live and as we were watching we saw another plane hit the other building and the news people said look the other tower exploded and they didn't see the other plane go into the other tower until they did the Re-run. I knew then that someone was out to hurt us. I drive to Seattle everyday to work, which is 150 miles one way and always the traffic is heavy going to work, but that morning the roads were pretty well clear. I couldn't believe it and I thought I wonder if I should just go home. It was pretty wierd. I got to work and two people called in and said that they to scared to come to work. The rest of the day we listen to the news. I never want to live thru that again. We cried alot at work just thinking of all those people who were involve in the tradgity. I wish to remember always and the families who suffered the most, the ones who are alive without there love ones. I LOVE AMERICA, THE LAND THAT I LOVE AND I WILL STAND BESIDE HER ALL THE WAY. There is was, one tower down and the next one crumbling as I watched in horror. As a native New Yorker, I felt a piece of my life and history was taken away. I thought of all the people who lost their lives and I felt totally helpless. I could not go to work that day and today on the anniversary of this horrid attack, I watched the television, watched the memorials and felt it as clear and new as if it was happening all over again. Tell us your story: It was my second day at a new job, working for an organization that seeks to build interreligious community between many religious groups, including Baha'is, Christians, Jews, Muslims and Unitarians. The night before, my boyfriend had taken me out to an authentic Mexican restaurant I had never been to before to celebrate my new job. The weather of the day was perfect; I felt so much love and hope. I enjoyed the commute along a blue and shining Lake Erie, listening to routine morning news on the local NPR affiliate, WCPN. I arrived at work very early, shortly after 8:30 AM. Just before 9:00 AM, the phone rang in the quiet, empty office. The office coordinator's husband was calling. He said, "Janet might hear on the radio that a plane might have flown into the building where I was supposed to be meeting today. Please tell her that I wasn't in it." The words he spoke conveyed no meaning. I thought it was a practical joke on an over-protective wife. Until I found Janet at her desk, crying. Cynthia had come into the office and instantly switched on the portable radio by her desk. By that time, the second plane had hit the twin towers, and we all knew this was no joke. I had to go to a meeting, a training session on how to show hospitality to guests at free community meals for the hungry. This meeting was filled with church-, mosque- and temple-going Americans who spend their days trying to alleviate the suffering of others. None of their minds were on learning hospitality. When I left the meeting and switched on my car radio, I felt sure that I was dreaming, or that someone had accidentally stuck a tape of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" in. A plane had crashed into the Pentagon. Another plane had circled over Cleveland, then crashed in Pennsylvania. As I listened, the twin towers collapsed. I grew up in Syracuse, NY and have family in northern New Jersey. I could see the destruction in my mind's eye. At the office, I shot out emails to family and friends in NYC. I wrote to a friend who had old Navy buddies who worked at the Pentagon. As soon as I could get home, I called my parents to see if they had word from my uncle, aunt and cousin. When I had checked up on everyone, my best friend, relatives, in-laws, and so on, and found that I had lost no one, relief spread over me. The worst that had happened was that my brother's girlfriend's family had to spend the night in Manhattan, since the bridges were closed to take them home, and my cousin was stuck on a bridge on her way home from school. Inconveniences. Those I loved were intact. I felt giddy. The fact that a national tragedy had occurred did not enter into my mind for several minutes. Then, my boyfriend called. He said that my parish was hosting an interfaith prayer service. He never goes to church. I said I would be there. In the pew with my boyfriend, his son and his son's mother, the oddness of this little family circle did not matter. We were lost together. We held hands and prayed the Lord's Prayer. We hugged and kissed to share peace. Peace. PEACE. The one thing that I wanted at the end of this long day. We sang "America, the Beautiful" together, and tears rolled down my face. I sobbed for the country that I love, for the many who had died, for the heroes who had run into a burning building to save others. I cried for Robbie, an eleven-year-old boy who had to grow up in this world. I couldn't stop crying when I thought about the young kids just out of high school, many urban African Americans just looking for a better chance, who would die in the senseless wars I feared would follow. I wept for the innocents in countries far away who were about to die for something they had no part in. I cried for the liberties I was afraid would be threatened. I cried hard for the road ahead of us. On the way home, I held my boyfriend's hand. We sat down on the swing on his porch, in the dark, and held each other. We each recalled how we had protested the unnecessary violence of conflicts past, he the Vietnam War and I the Persian Gulf conflict. We tried to steal ourselves up to stand against the tide of revenge, to stand for peace and for the America I love and believe in. But we both prayed, "May it not be so ..." It was time for me to go to school. My first class of the day was at 11:00am. So I proceeded down stairs around 9:45 to brush my teeth. With my toothbrush in hand, I said good morning to my boyfriend?s mother, whom I had been living with at this time. It seemed like any other morning. Then the phone rang. I heard her saying ?No way? as she frantically flipped through the channels on the television. I assumed that her husband had called her to tell her that someone they knew was on TV, this happened often because they are entertainers. I waited there behind her to see what she was looking for. Then she turned to me, and I will never forget her words, ? We are being attacked?. I sat on the coach, and was glued to the TV, and we saw the first tower in flames. As we watched in horror, not thinking that anything could get any worse, we saw the second building get struck. It was hard for me to watch, but even harder for me to turn away. I sat with my head in my hands crying my eyes out. How could a human being do something like this? I called my mother, and we just cried to each other on the phone. She told me to try to stay calm, and that if anything were to happen here that she would get to me no matter what. Needless to say, I didn?t go to school that day. I sat there watching TV all day. Watching those horrible videos over and over again. I felt like I was there. I have a lot of family up in New York, and all I could think about was where were they while all of this was happening? Were they amongst all of the people scurrying across the Washington Bridge? Everything closed here in Orlando, even the theme parks. That is everywhere except for the place I worked. Its called Wonder Works. I was sure that they would be closed, but around 4:00pm I called my manager, and she told me that we would still have to work. I figured by this time, that maybe it would be a good idea to get away from the TV, and try to do something. I think that the only reason why I thought this way was because of something my mother told me. ? We have to keep on living our everyday lives. If we don?t, then and only then will they have won this fight.? I got dressed, and made my way into work that day. I thought that I would be fine. However, this event was all that anyone could speak of. It was so hard to see tourists inside of this playhouse, having fun. I don?t know why it bothered me so much, but I thought that if I was so depressed, and so hurt that they should have been too. Someone asked me what was wrong? I gave them an evil look, and ran into the restroom. What is wrong? How could someone be so careless, and stupid to ask such a question? I quickly cleaned the tears from my face, and returned to work. The night dragged on forever, but I made it through till the end of my shift. That night, my eyes continued to be glued to the TV even though the same things were just being repeated over and over again. There wasn?t anything new being said yet. The next day, I felt the same pain. This lasted for weeks, even months. I couldn?t go a whole day without getting into a deep conversation with someone about the recent events. I cried almost everyday while driving in my car. It was always something that made me see a drastic change in my country. Like the growing patriotism. On my way to work the following day, I bought a window flag from a young man standing on the corner of an intersection, just to show my patriotism, and my pain for my country. It is now September 11th, 2003, and I still think of this tragic day often. It seems as though it was yesterday still. And still whenever seeing pictures, or hearing people talk about this tragic day, I shed a tear, for the families, friends, and for my country, which will always be scared from this horrible day. Tell us your story: I heard a radio report that stated that a plane had just crashed into the World Trade Center, but really didn't take it seriously at first as the local radio stations seem to love to make fun of the "Yankees" down here in Texas. I'm originally from Camden, New Jersey, and take alot of flack for my 'accent'. Upon going into the doctor's office, however, I looked at the TV on the wall and was shocked and stunned to see the second plane as it hit! It seemed totally unreal, like someone was playing a VERY BAD JOKE on the viewers, sort of like when Orson Welles broadcast WAR OF THE WORLDS on radio so long ago, and caused such a panic. But, as the reality of what was happening started to sink in -- I think I went into total shock -- I had friends from my High School who had gone to work on the WTC when it was being built, and also knew that some of them had taken jobs there with major corporations after it was completed. As soon as I returned home I immediately called my Mother to find out where my sister, and step-brothers and step-sisters were at, and if any of them had been there when the attacks happened. She comforted me regarding most of them but wouldn't talk about my friends from high school later when the lists of the dead were disclosed in the local paper. I still wonder WHY did such a terrible thing happen to so many totally innocent people, it will never make sense to me. I try to go on with life, but sometimes its harder now, knowing that even people I didn't know personally have suffered, both the ones killed and the families that they left behind. I moved to OKC right after the bombing attack on the Murrah Building there and didn't understand WHY would anyone do that against innocent people, most of my neighbors in northwest OKC had lost a loved one or friend. The attacks of 11 Sept. 2001 just brought back those same feelings, anger, fear, dissapointment that mankind cannot find better ways to sort out their differences than killing innocents. I don't remember the exact time of the appointment. It was sometime around noon. I had the TV on in the kitchen. The World News broke into local programing. They were talking about a small plane hitting one of the WTC buildings. I paged my Husband. When he called me I was telling him how terrible it was to see the WTC building on fire. I was telling him how horrible it must be for the people in the WTC building. I leaned my elbows on the counter in front of the TV. The next thing I remember was seeing a plane hit the other WTC building. The hole time I am yelling in the phone to my Husband what just happened. I was yelling we are being attacked, that was no small plane. That was a jetliner. I realised a long time after that day I was in shock. I still took my Grandson to his doctors appointment. His other Grandmother met me there. I remember the TV being on in the waiting room. There were a couple parents with children waiting for their turn to see the doctor. I just couldn't stand the TV being on in front of the children, so I went over and turned it off. I didn't realise until about fifteen minutes later I had angered the adults in the waiting room when I turned off the TV. The nurse came over to me and said, Patricks Grandmom, you have upset everyone by turning off the TV, and I said fine turn it back on, but we will be waiting out in the entryway until you call us. I remember looking at people in their cars as I was driving to and from the doctors office. I remember looking at the world around me different. Like I suspected some kind of terror to happen right in front of me. We live right next to BWI Airport. It was such an erie feeling not hearing the airplanes taking off and landing. I was so angry after the attacks it took me days before I finally cryed and got some of that anger out. I haven't felt right since 9/11. It is something I can't easily explain, but I just know there alot of people who know just what I mean. Thousands and Millions of lives will never be the same. My Grandsons doctor's sister goes right by the WTC every day. She works nearby. It was hours before her family knew she was OK. My nephew was in DC when the plane hit the Pentagon. He heard it hit. My husband wouldn't tell me my nephew was in DC until he got in touch with him to make sure he was OK. My husbands family is in North Carolina. They were all calling to make sure we were OK since we are between New York and DC. I feel so bad for the people who lost their lives and their family and friends. I have prayed for them often. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: September 11 marks the anniversary of the day that heartless terrorists attempted to bring our nation to it's knees. As a seventh grader in a city almost 2000 miles away from the World Trade Center towers and 1500 miles from the Pentagon, and with no relatives living outside of Texas, I was not directly affected by the events of September 11, 2001 any more than many of my fellow Americans. But at the same time, I was. The bell signaling the end of first period rang and as I made my way down the hall to my science class, our principal made an announcement. I was able to hear, "...an apparent terrorist attack...planes flew into the World Trade Center towers in New York...school will not be cancelled." Confused, I went to science and sat through the period, the teacher saying nothing about the attacks or even referring to the principal's announcement. I was unable to focus, wondering what could possibly be wrong. When I went to my third period, our teacher had the television on. He was glued to the screen and I set my stuff down and watched in horror as the screen showed a commercial plane slamming into one of the WTC towers. We watched the news the whole period, some people talking and ignoring what was going on in our country. I desperately listened, trying to hold back the tears as they replayed the tapes and showed live footage of what was happening then. When the bell rang, I raced down the hall to my fourth period class and asked to use the phone. I called my mom from school crying, asking her what was going on. She insisted on picking me up from school, and so I left early and went home, ignoring my science homework and gluing myself to the TV all night. I watched the footage repeatedly and listened intently when the president addressed the nation. "This is a day when all Americans unite in our resolve for justice and peace." I remember him saying that, as well as him saying, "Terrorism against our nation will not stand." A few months later, I visited Ground Zero. Standing there staring at the site where America's Trade Center towers once stood, I felt so much at once. It was empowering, devastating, and even triumphant because I knew America had survived. They tried to hurt us, to wound our pride, but instead they made us stronger. They united us in a way that nothing else could have. All of the sudden, America felt the same pain, the same anguish, the same anger, even if at different levels. Envious and resentful of our freedom, they tried to take it away, to punish us for what America stood for: freedom, liberty, and unity. But they couldn't. They were successful in shaking us, in scaring us, but they failed to break us. America as a whole is too strong to let that happen, and that was proved on September 11. September 11, 2001 didn't affect me directly, but whether or not I experienced the tragedy first hand, it still changed my life profoundly. In some ways, America will never be the same. But now, over a year and a half later, I find that we are forgetting. We are humans, and scientific studies prove that humans forget tragic events. We confuse, we rearrange, we scramble. And that is happening today. September 11 is not something to forget. It is not something that we can put in the back of our minds because it is not something that can be erased. After that day, we all came together as a country but now, as the war proceeds, we are dividing again. Once more, we have become individuals, when right now more than ever we need to be as one. After the attacks, everyone talked about unity. But if we want to be a united nation, we don't show it. One of the biggest forms of division is going on right now in America: not standing behind our leader. Whether we support him, detest him, resent him or cheer him on, Bush is still our leader. We need to stand behind him, even if we don't believe in the things he is doing. Keep that in mind, America. Now I ask you one thing: to never forget September 11. Burn it inside your memory, because as painful as it is, it needs to be remembered. Each and every firefighter, business man or woman, police officer, and American citizen that died that day needs to be rememebered. For their sake, in honor of those who died, in remembrance of the day that shook America, and in dedication to what was sacrificed, remember. Just remember, America, that's all we need to do. I pray that God will bless them with peace. I also pray that many people will give their lives to God by saying a simple prayer of: Dear Lord, I know that I am a sinner. Please forgive me of my sins and come into my heart as my personnal savior. Please write my name in the book of life and give me eternal life in heaven. Thank you God for forgiving me of my sins and for giving me eternal life in heaven. Amen By saying a simple prayer and believing that God has heard your prayer, God will answer your prayer. All that you have to do is have faith that God has heard your prayer and God will do the rest. See John 3:16 We all know that we are all going to die one day. Wouldn't you like to have reassurance of where you are going? This life is not it! My hope is in God where he is going to take me to heaven where there is no death, no sickness, no sorrow, no sin, no anger and no pain. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: On September 11th, 2001, I was running about 30 minutes late for work. I had to do the weekly laundry that morning, which required taking the bags down around the corner onto Smith Street to the Smith Laundry. Since I was up early, and would already be a little late to work, I decided to bring my two sons (who at the time were both homeschooling) with me so we could play in the Carroll park. I think we had a soccer ball and were going to kick it around in the back playing field. The first plane hit while I was in the very back of the laundromat, putting the laundry into the dryers. The kids were back tehre too, hassling each other and getting into trouble. I did not hear the first plane hit, becaiuse of the rumble of the dryers. So we went back across the street to the Park, and went back to playing soccer in the back of the park. When we came into the clearing in back, I looked up, and there was a huge plume of smoke overhead, covering a large swath of sky. I noticed that the entire sky was glittering. It was very strange. I wondered what it was, and then as the smoke drifted wider and lower in the sky, the glitter got bigger and bigger, until I could make out that it was individual piceces of office paper. The reason why it looked like it was glittering was that the papers spin and flip and roll as they float through the sky. Within just a few minutes, the paper was snowing down on the park. There were lots that were round or oval shaped, since they had burned their way in from the edges. I saw scraps of paper from Customs Department training manuals, legal invoices, memos, and I picked up some pieces to see what they were. I kept a few pieces of paper.They all had some trace of smoke or burned at the edges. One which was mostly intact, with just some scorching, was a databse schema, with names and recent dates on it, and I folded them into my pocket, knowing that something bad was happening. The source of the smoke was not visible from the park, so I could not yet know what was going on, but it was eery: my first idea was that possibly a semi-truck full of recylcling paper had caught fire on the BQE, which is a few block away. This would have been a manageble local catastrophy, and was the best theoretical explanation my mind could come up with. When the second plane hit, it was a MASSIVE sound- a solid, and hollow BOOOOOMMMM, and the sound bounced off of the buildings all around us. There was a woman nearby, and she looked at me as the sound rolled out. I sadi " That does not sound good." I knew that something huge was happening, and immmedidately grabbed the kids hands, went into battle mode, and got out of there. I called my wife on the cell as we hustled back to the house and she was watching the news, and said the WTC had been hit by a plane. The news hadn't yet registered the second plane, so I figured it was probably just a Cessna, a Piper Cub or something, an accident. I work on Fulton street- only a few blocks from the WTC. If I had gone to work that day, I might have gotten off the subway up at Broadway, and things might have been very different for our family that morning. I have vowed to be late to work as often as possible from now on. Tell us your story: September 11, 2001 ? ?In my Son?s eye?s ? by Randy Sullivan As I sat at my desk reading an email I heard the first reports of the attack. The rest of the day was a mask of confusion and chaos that will forever sit as a great weight on my heart and the hearts of all my countrymen. I watched as a plane smashed into the second tower. I watched the towers come down. I saw my countrymen scatter in all directions horrified, as nightmare became reality for them and all that watched. And then the Pentagon, the bastion of defense for the entire world was under attack. And I could do nothing but pray and try to hold back my rage. As the rage turned to tears I thought about my family and those that I love. And I got another email. From one of those I love. One alone in her building in the midst of the attack. With no understanding of what was happening and no knowledge of how to escape. Terrified, she would get out and walk north trying to figure out how to get home. And there was nothing I could do but pray. Co-workers in clusters around television sets watched as the horror continued to unfold and I remained at my desk hoping to get another email from my friend saying she had reached safety. Speculation of the damage and who was responsible continued throughout my workday as my eyes looked to the sky. Not sure what I was watching for but fearful never the less. Numb faces passing in the hallways and finally time to head home. Stopping at my church to spend time in prayer I ran across my assistant pastor who was stunned and confused. We talked and I knew I could do nothing but pray. During my prayer time in the sanctuary I realized that what was happening here was a re-awakening of a country that once relied on God and God alone. But in it?s rise to the top somehow lost focus on what made us a great nation. I prayed a prayer of thanksgiving that in bringing us to our knees as one body that we would stand together again as a nation under God. That we would lean on him for all understanding and vengeance would surely be his. Upon my arrival home I could see clearly the fear in my wife and son. We embraced as a family and walked to the house with my son clinging tightly on my shoulder. He is only five years old but somehow understood something very bad had happened to his world. And my anger grew as I saw the innocence fade from his face as I tried to answer his questions. He knew about the bad guys and he knew about the planes. He knew that the buildings came down and that there were children suddenly without parents. He rattled off something about a "find a parent day" where the kids who had lost their mom or dad could find new parents that had no kids. And I suddenly couldn?t handle the emotions of the day. As I sat and wept, my boy got into his bunny rabbit sleeping bag. I asked him what he was doing and he said he had to go to sleep. I said, it's very early, why are you doing that? And he said just this, ?I have to have a dream to tell me how to save the world?. And there was nothing I could do, nothing I could say but pray. Tell us your story: Local 94 Operating Engineers In Memory of: Local 94's HEROS Charlie McGee John Griffin Jr Dave Williams Veto DeLeo I worked with Charlie McGee for seven years, he was a great co worker and a great friend.I didn't know the other guys too well, but the stories I heard about what these four men went through on that day was simply "HEROIC". OUR STORY My self and part of the crew were trapped in the lobby of 7 wtc when the 1st tower collapsed. We had no idea that a plane let alone two planes had crashed into the towers. We knew there were explosions but we had made it through the 93 blast so we thought it was the same thing, just bigger. We had already assisted in evacuating the building, Thank god every body started evacuating on there own, and then we made the final evacuation announcement on the PA system and like I said all got out safe, the crew and myself stayed to man the building because of all the important equipment running, not knowing we were In any danger (again because of our experience with the 93 blast) and then it got dark and this tremendous screeching, thundering, and Rumbling started!!!And all I can see was the face of one of the crew who happened to being looking out the window of the lobby when this all started. For about 2 minutes I thought we were all going to DIE! We ran behind a wall laid on the floor and covered our heads and Prayed. I tell you it sounded like a missile and an earthquake was coming right at us at the same time. Well thank god it was neither. Well this eventually passed and we did not die. Now we all get up, look at each other, which was kind of difficult because of all the smoke, darkness and dust. We all panicked but we kept our heads, we were scrambling to get out of the building. Half of them went out thru the rumbled lobby, which they have a story of there own. Three others and myself went up one floor because we could not breathe and we knew exactly where the fire exits were on that floor which happen ed to be the Cafeteria. We went to one exit and there was no handle and the door was locked. We ran across the floor to the other side where the kitchen was, opened that door and smoke just poured out of the staircase so we closed that door. Now were running back to the other side of the floor to look out the window too see what was going on and that was useless, all you can see is all this smoke and dust. Now we are starting to get panicky and all we keep saying is we don't want to die!! We just made the decision to run out the smoke filled staircase, we wrapped our faces with wet towels and made a mad dash to the Street. We flew down the stairs literally. When we got out we went about a block behind the building, we all met up and started hugging and I mean hugging and happy to see each other. A few minutes go by and all of a sudden the floor starts shaking and you hear this rumbling and thundering again. We just took off running as fast as we can holding our heads again, but I had to look over my shoulder too see what was happening, I tell you it looked like the devil was coming, a big ball of smoke with huge hands and debris flying everywhere. Well we made it and I just had to share this story. Tell us your story: I was riding to work with my best friend and the radio was on and the dj kept saying that a plane crashed into the World Trade Center. My friend and I thought that it was just a small aircraft, a 2 seater, or something like it. It was not even in our comprehension that it could have been a jet, loaded with so much fuel. When we got to work, the rest of the staff was gathered around the tv watching the horrifying news. It was surreal. When the first tower collapsed, it was like I was seeing things. Then the second one went down. I couldn't see, my tears were blurring my vision. I couldn't talk, the lump in my throat was so huge. Then I found out about what happened at the Pentagon. NOW I panicked, my baby sister is a teacher in the D.C. area, and most of her students have parents who work at the Pentagon. I couldn't reach her. Her school was in lock-down, since the plane that crashed into the Pentagon came from the airport only 20 miles away. It was hell. Next came the news about the plane crash in Western Pennsylvania (I don't know how to spell the name of the town). I kept praying, and asking how much more was coming? How many more innocent lives were going to be lost? How many more families were going to suffer? How were we, as a nation, come through this? As a single individual, how are we going to come through this? How are we going to explain this to our children? Now, one year and one day after the tradegy, I am more aware of what is in our "friendly skies". I try not to take life for granted anymore. I am not so much in a rush to get somewhere that I cut people off on the highway. We as a nation stood tall, brave and UNITED!!! I have to say, I am proud to be an AMERICAN! I arrived at office and one of my co-workers told me in the parking lot what had happened. I couldn't believe it, however after entering the door I saw both secretaries crying and glanced at the television in their office. Within a few minutes I saw the second plane hit the World Trade Center. Being a veteran of combat in Vietnam, old feelings suddenly washed over me. However the same strength and faith that sustained me in another war, where the enemy would also cowardly hide and kill innocent civilians also was present. After a short prayer, I called my wife, told her to pray and that I was okay. Tell us your story: I took the train as I had been doing for over a year, ever since my brother had talked me into working in the City, 15 months earlier. I worked for American Express onsight doing VIP Corporate Travel for Marsh & Mclennan Companies. My brother was a SR. VP. and worked at the Trade Center. While on my trip in, the first plane hit before I left the train station. I came out and walked 34th Street to the 6th Avenue subway. When I came up everything seemed quiet, but the second plane had hit Tower 2. As I was going into my building at 6th and 46th, Marsh's Main Office, I got a call from my son telling me that the Trade Center had been hit. I really thought he was crazy, but I said wait til I get in and see. At my elevator bank one of the kids I knew said that it was true. My legs almost went out from under me and 2 kind gentlemen help me to my office on the 25th floor. It was all true. My team leader Janet Dunn came in and we drew up a list of everyone with phone numbers. By 10AM we knew we had lost 11 friends and collegues who woerked on the 94th floor of Tower 1. It was amaxzing how every one just pulled together. We walked to the other side of the building. There was a tv in a little office, I looked. When I turned my head and saw the towers, I could not believe what I was seeing. I knew from where the smoke was that if my brother was there he would never come home again. I lost my brother, 11 friends and 300 people that I helped with travel. I learned that day that life is very precious. Live it. Enjoy it. I have nothing but praise for American Express and Mr Ken Chenault. I was treated with kindness and sympathy. Also Marsh was great. I had people to talk to and a lot of kindness and understanding from them also. My brother John Rig will live in my heart forever. My friends that I lost are also prayed for and missed. Tell us your story: As I sit here on the 1st anniversary, after that horrific day in September, I listen with sorrow and a heavy heart about how all the events unfolded. I remember the shock at how someone could do something so terrible to US the most powerful country in the world. I remember the terror of whom and what was next, was someone I loved going to be a victim, did I know anyone that was on one of those planes or in those buildings? I remember my mother calling to make sure I was at work and not traveling that day and the fear that she most have felt for even the smallest amount of time. I remember looking around our small cafeteria at work and seeing the shock and horror in my coworker?s eyes, I remember feeling the tears swell into my eyes, the silence on the street. I remember the President being a beacon of truth and strength; providing not answers, but assurances that we would redeem ourselves as a nation, we would be safe, we may never be the same, but we would be strong and ALL of us believed him. I remember the sense of unity that we all felt, even months afterwards. What I remember more than anything was the ANGER that we all felt that someone could orchestrate such a horrendous attack on anyone, especially us. How naive and arrogant we all were. Somehow that anger has subsided over the year and many of us are feeling despair and sadness. Well I say the HELL with that I will not be sad today; I will remember with love and honor those men and woman that died for our country. Yes honor, for those people that were once innocent civilians became instant warriors of hope for the World. They are with us all in spirit as we defend ourselves and the World against the most horrific kind of war and terror. The firemen, the policeman, the banker, the secretary, and the defenders of flight 93 that died that day should all be honored in the same manner as war heroes. They are all heroes to me, because their deaths may save the lives of someone I care for dearly. If it weren't for them and our anger about September 11th we could have an even greater disaster. It is horrible that we as a nation and as a people had to suffer such a great loss, but I believe all those lives lost were meant to save ours and that of our loved ones. I am angry that an animal like Osama Bin Laden could do such damage to our lives, but he mistook our strength as a nation. I fear that our complacency as a nation could allow an even greater threat, Saddam Hussein, to bring about the most feared attack upon our land or the defenders of our liberty (our soldiers); a nuclear attack. Please don't forget that anger, I say embrace it, if we don't than there will be another attack and it will be more disastrous than the first and that could take someone you love. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was riding the bus home from a trip to another school for a class in the morning and we had the radio on. I heard what was happening but I didn't really understand it or even believe what was happening. When it was time for history class, we got to watch the news on TV for class. I just was in awe of it all. After school I watched TV for a while, just watching the planes hit and everything over and over again. This continued for a few more days of course. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The New York sky was beautiful in all her light and might. But darkness rather quickly made that September morn look night. A street most of us have traveled down by foot, car, cab, or truck is buried under rubble now - I'm not because of luck. But is it luck to still remain and fear your every step? With my life depending solely on a group of men I've never met? Why is it that some were picked to die and the rest left to weep and mourn? Who makes these fatal choices? He leaves my country torn? And who shall take the blame for this disgusting painful mess? How can they close their eyes to sleep without guilt keeping them from rest? Some say 'why haven't we bombed them yet; made the Middle East a parking lot?' Because that's stooping to their level and guiltless villains we are not. The eagle patiently sharpens his claws and someone will pay for this shit, but more brutality on the innocent just doesn't seem to fit. Let's take our time and plot the course to a peaceful free beyond. Let's all join hands and reconstruct our resolving American bond. For my faith is dwindling quickly if not already gone. Afterall these fascists found a way to strike the Pentagon. You must admit we're pretty weak to not prevent that sneak attack and no future investigations could ever bring our towers back. I still stop in my tracks when I hear a plane up in the sky. In my own little way I pay homage to the thousands of innocent who died. Then suddenly it came to me why the rest of us are still around to fight... it's our duty to stand tall and wave the flag throughout the night. So although you're scared and quite confused about what's wrong, what's right... remember Lady Liberty with her torch held high and bright. A symbol of generosity and the freedoms, which make us strong... a message that we will not be conquered, for this land's where we belong. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I woke up on September 11, 2001 as if it were any normal work day. Got up the same usual time, drove the same usual streets to my job, and had my usual cup of hot chocolate with a smooth Marlboro Light cigarette a few minutes after getting to work by 8am. By at 8:45 the nation, the world, came to a screeching holt of shock and for a short time misbelief of what was happening. I happened to be walking past a coworker of mine on my way to the restroom when he stopped me and said that a plane just crashed into one of the WTC towers. I instantly thought, "Wow, that is terrible!", but at another moment thought, "Well, that will surely be hard to repair." And from there I walked onward to my destination. Obviously, what I was told was not really sinking in. Only minutes later I heard about the second tower and how they were collapsing. At this time the looks on coworkers faces along with my own I'm sure, were pasted with shock, anger, and teary eyes. We had a small TV in a back office where streams of people were coming in to stand or sit and watch the terror that was happening to NYC. My own feelings were mixed with fear, anger, and the BIG question: Why? I started calling all my close friends and family to just simply say "I love you" and be sure they were okay. I'm sure like myself, many other people in the Detroit area were wondering if terrorism would hit the Renaissance Building in downtown Detroit or the Chrysler Tech Center located north of Detroit. My brother was located in Norfolk, Virginia at the Naval Base and I worried terribly if he was okay. I tried calling him, but got no answer. I do remember thinking over and over, "This is just a bad movie and it will be over soon." Well, unfortunately it wasn't some fictional story displayed on a cinema screen. This was REAL. I can say it really made me see life, the nation, and the world much differently. The area in which I live and work for many days and weeks after the attacks, were so unbelievably quiet. It was so surreal and eery. You could see and feel how the everyday drivers on the streets were caring more for the stranger in the car next to him than ever before. Drivers were more courteous to each other. But I will never forget the looks on people's faces as they try to go on with their daily lives. I've shed a lot of tears over this tragedy and will never forget the day I woke up on Sept. 11th. I don't have any children yet, but I know when I do this will be history I will be sharing with them. My many prayers and blessings to all who were affected by this horrific day in our nation. My many thanks to all the volunteers and firefighters. God Bless America!
