I caught the news as I was getting dressed; I watched in absolute horror as the world that I thought I knew, ended. I immediately called my husband and in one breath, we both said "go get the kids". In tears, scared and wanting my family at home, I rushed off to the high school, middle and elementary school. My husband's company sent the employees home to be with their families. One of the most profound things that have come out of this for me is the TOTAL loss of innocence for my children and future generations. Rationally, I have always wandered just when and how terrorists would reach us. I grew up in Scandinavia and have lived and traveled all my life so I do realize, unlike, unfortunately, many Americans do not, that OTHER countries feel the same way about their country as we do and that WE HAVE TO LEARN TO ACCEPT DIVERSITY; not just in lip service, but in our hearts. We, the people, need to take our government back and make it as diversified as this country is. I also believe that Israel and Palenstine will have to have separate countries and that the US and the world need to help make that happen. We can't take sides on something like this as the chasm just gets wider and more violent. If this does not happen, we will loose what little realtions we have with the Muslim world and there will be a war that the world has never seen. I keep thinking of the people lost and I thank God daily when everyone gets home safely. I never let my family leave angry or without saying that I love them. 9/11 taught me a very valuable lesson on everyday routines and days...you can't take it for granted. Tell us your story: on this day it started as a good day. a day that GOD made with a blue sky anda blessed day. i was driving alone and listing to the radio and then the news came on (and it wasn't time for it i thought) they said that the world trade center had been hit by a plane . i thought why would a plane hit the world trade center ? i could not belive what happen. and the first thing i did was pray for those people and there family. and for our nation. then the next plane hit the other builing trade center x 2. and i thought this is to much. and then they did it again at the penagon i thought it was not going to stop were are they going to hit next ? and then they did in a field in pa. why would terriost would do this to us . all the usa has ever done was to help everyone and all for the good. i still can not belive that any one could do this to a country that only want to help. this make you think why would anyone hurt people that never hurt any one and would never hurt anyoone in there life. this also get a person to think about what inportion to me. my GOD,my family, my country, etc...... Cmj was that weekend and that is what brought me to the city that particular day. I wanted to go early, I had some friends I hadn't seen in some time and I wanted to see a relative that at the time worked in the trade center. I arrived in the city on September 11 in the morning about 6:30 ish, all I could remember was what a beautiful day it was. It was one of those that days that just for the suns ray on your face and hair made you feel alive. After settling in I found my way to the trade center and sat and talked to my relative. She and I didn't get to see one another since my move from the village. I had began walking, enjoying the smell and sound that only New York could offer. Being just of two blocks away my ears began to ache from a deafening roar. I was still I remember I can't believe this is for real. I can't believe that this is really happening. A man ran past me and tapped my arm and said ' come on man, we've got to get out of here!' I, although frozen found my way to run with the others. Since then, my life has been very difficult in the adjustment. I wonder if I stayed and talked longer, stopped to look at something, or maybe held the door for you, you would be here and I would be there. I don't know if I should be sorry, and I don't know how to even be myself anymore. I was lost there too, and I can't imagine finding my soul silent. Although I am not sure if it is warranted, I am sorry. I am sorry that I didn't hold the door for you. I hope you too made it out and I hope that you are able to find the peace that I have been looking for. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was 11 years old, and in the 6th grade at West Springfield Elementary school. I was sitting in class when I swore I heard a very faint crashing noise. I had turned to ask if anybody had heard the boom, but nobody had. I knew that I had sensitive ears, so I dismissed the noise, and still do not know if I really heard anything of significance. They had drawn the blinds, and I noticed a very slight sense of uneasiness in the teachers. Then, there was an announcement over the intercom. They announced that they were mowing the lawns and working outside, this meaning we were not allowed outside for today and there would be no recess. At time of this announcement, I had arrived at numerous realizations of how odd and unecessary this was. Frankly, it just didn't make much sense. They later came to tell us that something had happened, but were not in position to say exactly what. So many parents and family members of the students had worked at the pentagon. When school let out, I headed to S.A.C.C (school-aged child care) as I usually do. Many parents were picking up their children early and taking them straight home. A friend of mine from the after school program offered to bring me home and let me stay with them. I just had to ask my dad, so I called him. He told me what happened and I was in total shock. I couldnt believe it. Though, he honestly didnt think so much would come from it at the time. He gave me permission to leave, and I joined my good friend. Her mom picked up her cusins, and we headed home while listening to the news on the radio. It was a reality in which nothing seemed real. We went home and watched the news in sorrow and confusion. It had changed my entire view of our country, of the world, of life. I mean not to say that my views of these aspects were torn, but my young eyes held a strong awakening. Later that day I headed home. My mom had stayed home that day. Doing housework at the time, having the nice day's breeze come through the open door, she had heard the tremendous boom of the plane crashing into the pentagon from our own home. Maybe that is what I had heard in class that morning. As the trauma continued, we recieved a call. A father of one of my classmates had been claimed missing. I remember my friends and I were searching through the paper, the Washington Post having listed the names of the missing by the hundreds. There we sat, each name was a person lost, a friend, family, co-worker, a human being. I cannot describe the magnitude of loss and struggle throughout so many families and individuals throughout the world at this time. The father of my friend had died. My classmate, the sweetest and most ingenius child, had lost his father so suddenly and traumatically, he was only 11 years old. In the honor of his father, the school held a ceremony. A tree was planted infront of the main entrance, a beautiful tree. In honor of him and all those who suffered the same fate, for all who became heros (many students presented the awards presented to their parents on 9-11 and the stories behind their hero,) and to all who still carry their heads high and live with these memories. Tell us your story: I was in the car with my oldest daughter, coming back from a doctor's appointment when we heard the report on the radio, first thinking it was just a bad radio joke, when we heard them announce the second tower had been struck. We both started crying, my daughters had just visited the World Trade Center in July, so when the Towers fell my oldest daughter was beside herself, I didn't quite know what to do or say, we then started going through her pictures and souveniers and came across ornaments they had purchased at the gift shop at the World Trade Center, one ornament had the Towers, empire state building a taxi cab and to our shock an airplane dangling next to the towers. It was a day none of us will ever forget, and as I sit here at work typing the date over and over, I am chilled every time I think about the pain of the families of those lost on that horrible day. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Birmingham, AL, but was on a business trip on Sept. 10th in Western British Columbia, Canada. As our group prepared to begin a teambuilding exercise comprised of camping and kayaking in the open Pacific, a colleague called my hotel room, urging me to turn on the TV. The towers were just beginning to fall when I turned the TV on. News came in that a plane from Pittsburgh had crashed near the airport; the plan was reportedly on its way to DC. I lived in Pittsburgh my entire life, until 3 years ago. My father communtes to DC w/ the Department of Energy from Pittsburgh. Phones were busy, and I couldn't get through to my husband, back in Birmingham. Since my husband and I work for the same company, I left him a voice mail over the company's 1-800 system. He returned the message stating that my family was safe and accounted for. We embarked on our trip anyway - after all 14 co-workers (some from NY) verified the safety of their families. The team building exercises were futile - we were united anyway. We were without cell phones, radio, or TV for 3 days in the open Pacific and on small islands where we slept and ate. Upon leaving the hotel for the trip, we thought that 20,000 people, at least, were dead, and we had no knowledge of the downed airline industry or if any other attacks had occured. The Canadian border was closed, so we couldn't drive home even if we wanted to. Through various travel wranglings, all of us made it home by the following Monday at the latest. The strangest part was not being in the US at the time. The Canadian media focused on the Canadians who died. It was a number that you could put your arms around. Just a few pages of a newspaper held their pictures. Like Oklahoma City. It wasn't until we got back to the states that it became apparent - we would never hear ALL the stories, know all the faces. My first question was "Why?" Why do they hate us? WHO hates us? Who hates us THIS much? The newspapers did a great job of helping to explain the radicalism behind the attacks. I boarded Air Canada from Vancouver to Dallas. The flight attendants were accomodating and calm. They issued us plastic knives for our lunch. That's when the impact hit me - this is going to change us in so many small ways, too. I then boarded a Delta flight from Dallas to Atlanta. The flight attendants were edgy at best. Ordering us to our seats as we boarded, they had actually torn the first class curtains from their tracks at the request of the pilot. My husband retrieved me from the Atlanta airport after midnight on Sunday. I sat in front of CNN for days - catching up in a way. In late August, 2001, my husband and I were on our nightly walk around our neighborhood. He was 28 and I was 32 at the time. We talked about the state of the world and where it was going. Values and morals of our childhood seemed long gone, and we were lone holdouts of accountability among our peers. I actually said, "It seems like a war is the only thing that brings people back to their senses and sense of patriotism, values, and morals." I can still remember where I was standing when I said it. I pray for the famlies and friends of those left behind. Especially the children. Traffic was horrible and I had to be at a 8:00 am (CST) staff meeting. Our department was planning to have a brainstorming session to help us establish our 12 month goals. I was running late due to the heavy traffic and took a different exit thinking it would be faster - but it wasn't! Anyway, I had a local radio station on and the DJ said, "What the he__!!! Did you see that - a plane just hit the World Trade Center! He was reporting about it in disbelief when just minutes later - he said - Oh my God! The other tower has been hit! What is going on?? By this time I was at my parking ramp in downtown Minneapolis. They were still trying to piece together what was going on - at first I thought these were probably small Cessna planes or something - but then they said they were both commercial airliners!! I began walking to my office through our downtown skyway system, and called my husband at his office. He had just been in a conference room where there was a television and he saw everything and said this is terrorism. I remember immediately feeling frightened and sick to my stomach. He said the people working in those towers above where the planes hit would not be able to make it out. I got to my office - and found that 3 of my coworkers were also running late to this meeting. I recall as people in the office heard what had happened that there were gasps of disbelief and fear. Everyone was trying to log on to the internet, but the servers were so slow you couldn't get on. We tried to find a television, but couldn't locate one. When all my department coworkers got to work, we realized none of us were going to be able to concentrate on goal setting - it seemed so trivial all of a sudden. I just had this yearning desire to go to my infant son and hold him and hug him and protect him from all of this. Within the hour, a meeting was called and we were told that our building was being evacuated. We are in a high rise and very close to Minneapolis' tallest building, IDS Center, and they were evacuating that building and others around it for safety reasons. At that time, there were other planes that were in the air, unaccounted for, and potentially could be striking other metropolitan areas. I called my daycare provider, who was weeping - her son was scheduled to leave for the Marine Corps that very day. She was already having a hard time 'letting go' of him and then this had to happen, and she was afraid that now he is going to be serving in a war effort. I left work and went and picked up my son. We went home and I held him and loved him and I had this undying thirst to watch whatever I could on television. It was all so horrible I could not stop crying. I looked at my beautiful and innocent son and cried for him and this world that my husband and I brought him into. Would it ever be the same? What will his life be like? How can we protect him from evil? I thought and prayed for all the people in New York City and all those that lost loved ones or didn't know where their loved ones were. It was a day when material things or wealth did not matter - just having your loved ones close by was enough. I will never forget it. Tell us your story: On September 11, 2001 I received a phone call from my brother, which was unusual because he never calls me that early in the morning. I heard him screeming "Oh my God, the world is on fire" I couldnt understand him at first because I was still half asleep. I asked him to calm down and repeat what was just said. He told me to turn on the TV and I asked what channel? I didnt need to know, It was on every channel. Images of the World Trade Center on fire. All kinds of thoughts went in my head. What happened? Who did this? Where are the people who worked there? Then, I saw the second plane. I couldnt say anything. I just broke into tears and I called my mom. I told my family that I loved them over and over. I will never forget that day. Today is September 11, 2002. Although its been 1 year. I was 6 months pregnant and this was the day I would find out the sex of the child and if she was healthy. We arrived and were seated in the lobby watching T.V. just as the second plane hit building 2. The shock of what we were seeing and the knowledge we were learning about this horror was bringing tears from well down in my soul. I wept in sorrow at what I was seeing on the screen then wept in pleasure at this perfect baby I was seeing on the computer screen. Joy then oerwhelmed me as I realized what I had and then tears once more for others who were losing everything. My daughter was born in January. She is such a blessing. I went downstairs and turned on the TV and watched in disbelief what I was seeing. My first reaction was horror then anger. I spent the rest of the week in anger at what had happened to our nation. The next Sunday at Church the service was dedicated to the attack and as we sang "God bless America" I finally began to mourn, I sobbed during the entire song. I am so grateful for grandparents who had the foresight to leave Greece in the early 1900's to come here so that I could have a better life. They have no idea of the gratitude I have for that sacrifice, and the lesson they taught me in loving this country and not clinging to their old way of life but melting into this society and never looking for a handout but for making their own way by the sweat of their brow. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It was about 8:45 a.m. when someone came into the cafeteria and said a plane had crashed into the WTC. We all thought it must have been a small private plane. Then, we started to receive calls from friends and family that it was a large passenger plane and we turned on the radio to listen to the latest news. When we heard about the Pentagon and then the second plane going into the other tower I knew that we were being attacked. A few of us went up to the roof of the school and stood there watching as the Wtc was engulfed in dark thick smoke and cried and said a prayer because in my heart I thought that those people on the upper floors were not going to get out. We went down to go back to work when word came that the towers were collapsing. I still wasn't sure about some nieces and nephews who worked in the area but I never felt so helpless and sad as I did then. Parents came rushing into the school to take their children home and soon we had to ask them to form a line outside the school and their children would be brought down to them. As part of the emergency plan set up I stayed until 6:00 p.m. when we got word that all 800 plus students arrived home safely, if some weren't picked up at their bus stops they would be brought back to the school. I was there to feed them if this happened or if we had to stay open as an emergency center. Upon leaving the building there were papers floating around that had burnt edges on them, they had come from the Twin Towers when they collapased and the wind had blown them all that distance and there was soot all over my car. I came home and saw for the first time what the world had been watching on TV all day. All I could do was stare and cry. Till this day I still won't go to Ground Zero as so many have, it's just too sad a place . I really feel that on that day all the good and wonderful people of the world had become in their minds Americans and in their hearts New Yorkers. Here in the city life goes on but now there seems to be a better understanding of what it really means to be an American and how proud I am to be one. I was running a bit behind schedule, drving down Dorchester Road to avoid traffic. Just as I arrived at Goodwin Elementry School the news came on the radio that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. I got on the cell phone my wife. We were speculating how some pilot mut have had a heart attack and flown his small plane into the building. As we were talking, news broke that the second airliner had struck the 2nd tower. At that moment, we both knew. Something sinister was happening. I turned around and went back home. We stayed glued to the TV the rest of the day and stayed up all night long. How did we allow this to happen? What could we do to help. The next day I started calling the National Guard only to find out I was too old to sign up. I can't tell you how disappointed I was. To this day and as long as we are fighting a war, I will support our efforts. All those people, the 2900, need not hae died in vain. The lives that were taken and given, uncovered our weaknesses and opened our collective eyes to the danger and cancer of TERRORISM which the rest of the world has been dealing with for decades. I am a 14 teenager from Toronto. My mom works at a Royal Bank. That week, she was in New York in the World Trade Center for a meeting while my father was at home taking care of me, my 2 sisters and my brother. It was Spetmeber 11th. I woke up that morning around 7:00, getting ready for school. All I could remember was my computer teacher telling us that 2 airplanes crashed into the World Trade Centers. I got up and ran to the nearest phone. I wanted to know if my mom was alright. Was she still alive? Only until 1 week later, no phone calls from her, we knew she was gone forever and never coming back. This has been the hardest time of my life...losing my mother at the age of 14. It's been hard. I've thought of commiting suicide because of this. I really miss her. I'm just letting everyone out there know, that you really should appriciate the people you love and you don't realize how much you love them until there gone. I'm challenging everyone that's reading this now, to go out and do something that would make one of your loved ones proud. Tell us your story: My mom was getting ready for work in our room, and her hairdrier usually wakes me up, but on that day she had the news on, and after the hairdrier went off, I had just come out of my state of unconciousness associated with sleep, and heard something about the WTC buildings. When I woke up I saw that the first building was burning, and they were reporting on the news that there was a fire, and they really didn't have a clue what was going on, and why the fire would be just in the center of the building and have taken up so many floors in the short time it took for them to dispatch their copters to that area. While my mom and I were sitting on her bed watching we saw the second plane coming and saw it hit the second building. Unfortunatly, I had class that morning, but my class didn't start until 10:25. In the car on the way to school, the towers were still standing, but I stayed in the car for a couple minutes after pulling into the parking lot at my college campus, and the second building hit, had just crumbled to the ground. I was sorry that I had not stayed home from school that morning. By the time everyone was in class and we were all talking about it, the second tower had collapsed. Hours after I got home, we were watching on the news, and I looked out the back door to my house, (we live on the water) and i motioned my family to come to the door, because I could see smoke. I live about 100 miles from NYC. And in just about 4 - 5 hours, we could see the smoke billowing from there. It was a scary site. As we watched the news over and over again of the crashes and the collapses, it was sickening, it felt like it wasn't real, and it was a movie on TNT or something where they repeat the things over and over again. So later on in the day (my second class had been cancelled) we went shopping. But a couple of months later I would have this dream that my family and I were in the WTC. And it was on the verge of collapsing, and we just couldn't get out. Finally we did, and got safely away, but i remember in my dream hearing people say "don't look out the windows towards the crashing noises" they said it was people jumping. It was a nightmare and September 11th was a nightmarish day as well, that will live in the minds of thousands of people for most of the rest of their lives. Tell us your story: My September 11, 2001 Story Kirk Foster On Tuesday, September 11th, 2001, I had to do another day of my 2-week annual tour as an Air Force Reservist. So I left our home in Springfield, Virginia, and made my way to the Pentagon. From the Pentagon, I would take a charter bus shuttle to my reserve office in Rosslyn, Virginia, which is an office building community up the road, past Arlington National Cemetery. I got on the bus at its usual place outside the south side of the Pentagon, near Corridor One. As usual, my Pentagon ID pass from my old job in the Pentagon got me on Although I finished my job in the Pentagon in June 2000, the Air Force never took away my Pentagon ID. It didn't expire until July 2002, so I just used it as a form of ID to get on the bus. The bus was one of those nice, air-conditioned charter buses with good seats, so I closed my eyes and tried to take a catnap in my seat, which was a window seat on the right side. I remember thinking it was too early and I didn't want to be there. The bus soon began its route to Rosslyn. It passed around the west side of the Pentagon, about 50 yards from the helicopter pad. I recall the time was 7:45 AM. At about 9:10 AM, I was at my computer terminal in my Rosslyn office building and checked my e-mail. There was a brand new e-mail from the division secretary, Ms. Brenda Germany, saying a plane just crashed into the World Trade Center..."the top half just exploded." I figured it was a horrible accident. A few minutes later, I got up to go to the bathroom. In the hall, I met Lt Col Bruce Lennard who said "Did you hear what happened?" I said no, and he said both World Trade Center Towers had just been hit in a terrorist attack. "It's on TV in the Conference Room," he said. I recall saying "no, you gotta be joking." So I went into the division conference room and saw everyone gathered around the TV. One of the major networks was on, and it showed the second tower being hit. I also recall it showed the billowing smoke pouring from the buildings, both up close and from a long-distance shot. I figured now was a great time to go get a cup of coffee down the street and think about this. As I left the coffee shop at about 9:40, I saw dozens of Air Force personnel, and dozens of other people, streaming out of the office building across from mine. I figured big conference had just finished, and people were getting back to their jobs. I continued back into my building (1501 Wilson Blvd) and returned to my office up on the 7th floor. There, I found Earl the paralegal looking at the internet on his computer. The internet said the Pentagon had just been bombed. Everyone was ashen faced; Earl said he'd been able to see black smoke billowing up from the direction of the Pentagon a few moments ago. I went to the window and saw a large cloud of yellowish white smoke coming from the area of the Pentagon, about a mile and a half away. You couldn't actually see the Pentagon. Everyone in my office was walking around, trying to get any information available. There wasn't panic, but real concern. Between 10 and 10:30, I recall, Doretha the secretary said my wife Shirley was on the line. Doretha transferred the call into my office. Shirley told me the World Trade Center had just collapsed. No, I told her, that can't be right. She said they're showing it on the TV. Shirley wanted to know if I was coming home now, or what the plan was for us in the office, and I told her I didn't know either. By this time some of the phone lines were jammed, and so were some of the internet sites. So I told Shirley to call me back at around 11:00. I went back to the TV in the conference room and saw the collapse on TV, too. There's no way people can breathe in that cloud of dust and smoke, I thought. People in the room were thinking tens of thousands of casualties, because the TV talked about 50,000 people are in the towers on a business day. The fire chief of Arlington County, where the Pentagon is, already was being reported as saying 800 were dead in the Pentagon. That dumb-assed remark - with no proof - made the panic worse for a lot of people. When I went back to my office, I turned on the radio and heard that several airliners up in the air were unaccounted for. That was when I felt scared. For the first time, I realized that people in tall buildings were being killed, that hundreds of military personnel nearby had just been killed by a rogue airliner, and that another one might be on the way to the DC area. I looked out the window and still saw military personnel streaming out of buildings. About two stories beneath my window, on the plaza level of my building, was a large shrub in a big pot, so I figured that if on the bizarre chance my office did get whacked, I could jump on that shrub and maybe just break my legs or something. From my office, there was a Shirley called again, and I recall putting her on speaker phone so that everyone could hear the latest. The chief of our entire Directorate, Colonel David Thomas, had come by earlier saying he had received no instructions on what we were supposed to do or go, but that he would let us know if he did. He had three floors of Air Force personnel, spread out from the seventh to ninth floors. We waited for another 5 hours or so. I recall the phones hardly rang. As I looked out the window, very few people were on the street. At 3:00, Major Chris Van Natta said we'd been given the go-home signal. But the shuttle bus and the metro was shut down, the roads near the Pentagon were closed, and I-395 (going past the Pentagon) was jammed solid. Luckily, his carpool was going to my town of Springfield, and he gave me and two others a ride. We headed west, as all the roads to the east were closed. There were police directing traffic at all the major intersections in the area. I got home at about 5:00. When I got home, Shirley told me that our old neighbor from Mississippi, Katie Swanson, called her that morning, told Shirley four rogue airliners were heading to Washington DC to kill everyone, and that she (Katie) was sorry. That's how Shirley got wind of the big picture. Prior to that, she was up at Caroline and Alex's school when a teacher came in and said "your husband works at the Pentagon, right?" Shirley said no but got word from this lady that the Pentagon had just had an airliner hit it. Shirley was told not to turn on the TV for the kids, as they were trying not to scare the children. By the end of the day, the school had issued a letter talking about how to deal with the attack with your children, and what the school could do to help. Aftermath Thursday, September 13: Still on reserve duty, I caught ride with a man driving to the Pentagon that morning. The traffic was backed up pretty good, and as we rounded the crest of the highway I could see why. The blackened gash in the west side of the Pentagon was clearly visible, and there seemed to be a small city of tents, construction equipment, and lights next to the impact site. It was pretty creepy. The guy giving me a ride calmly remarked that he climbed out from his west side, fifth floor office at the Pentagon on his hands and knees. That's the side the jet hit. All the usual bus sites around the Pentagon had been quickly relocated across the interstate to a office tower community known as Pentagon City, about a quarter mile away. He dropped me off there, and it took about another hour to get to Rosslyn about a mile away, using the metro. The shuttle bus still ran from my Rosslyn office to the Pentagon at the end of the day, so I took it, to try to begin my commute home from the Pentagon. The driver really didn't have a plan; everything was disrupted. He dropped us off on the far side of the Pentagon, next to the river. That was not good for me, because I wasn't about to use my Pentagon pass to try to take a shortcut through the building - I feared they'd deactivated it and it would set off some sort of alarm if I tried to use it - and there is no sidewalk around the outside of the Pentagon that allows you to skirt the outside. So I started walking until the sidewalk ran out in front of the Pentagon exit used by the Secretary of Defense. The gate guard picked up on me real quick. He challenged me and I told him I was trying to get to the "slug lines" on the other side of the Pentagon where people catch rides home. He told me that entire side of the Pentagon outer area was closed and he directed me to Pentagon City again, about a mile away. So I had to cut through parking lots and walk along access roads. When I got to the South parking lot of the Pentagon, it had been taken over by soldiers and emergency personnel. There were army vehicles, armed guards, open sided tents, and firefighters napping on the highway embankment. About 100 yards away, near the west side of the Pentagon, was a community of tents. Many of the tents were white - no red crosses - and it had the eerie look of a morgue. By this time, I had thought about my colleagues and I being left in our building for 6 hours September 11th, with no instructions from our JAG superiors either in the Pentagon or at Bolling AFB, across the river. I began to joke to others that apparently, Plan B was to leave us lawyers in the building as bait for any secondary terrorist attack. By this time Shirley and I had received a lot of calls and messages from family, friends, and acquaintances asking if I was OK; it was a very nice. I've told people that judging from my bus route's regular path, relative to the final path of the plane, I missed being killed by about 90 minutes. I may well be wrong, but I feel I'm right. Wednesday, October 3rd, 2001. My last day of reserve duty for a while. The morning shuttle bus at the south side of the Pentagon was running again, and I got a good view of the damage to the Pentagon's west side. The gash is only about 30 feet wide, but it runs from top to bottom. I could see the "C" ring (the middle ring of the Pentagon's 5 rings of offices) through the gash, but it was pretty beat up too. For about 150 feet on each side of the gash, however, you can see extensive fire damage to the interior of all the floors on the outside E ring. That's about it. I'm still unsure about what September 11th, 2001 will mean in the long run. But this is my story from that day and afterward, for what it's worth. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was in school, and because I am so patriotic i decided i was going to join the army reserve and go to college. Then i heard that the first WTC got hit by a plane. Just like everyone else i had no idea what to think. As the day went on and terrorism was brought up in the news. I got mad, very mad. September 12th 2001 i visited my local Army recruiter. i graduated highschool and now leave to report to Ft. Leonardwood Missouri on Sepember 17 2002. I am goin to be a combat engineer an also a paratrooper. At first i joined the army because i was so upset with the eniter situation. As time went on and i though more and more about my situation i realized i didn't join the army because i was mad. I joined to show the civilians of america that their are people out their that arn't going to run from terrorism and bad situations. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Sept 11th did not only have its affect on americans but also arab americans were affected too. They make it seem as if we do not care about America when it is our country too. America is made up of many nationalities. There isn't any pure americans. There are Arab American, Hispanic Americans. Black Americans and so on. No group is superior to the other, no one is perfect. Every nationality has a few rotton apples that certainly doesnt mean all are bad. If we lived in a world where if one person committed a horrific act that means whatever his/her nationality maybe that they are all the same ... I think not. That is like saying every black man is like O.J Simpson or that every white man is another Timothy McVay. It is wrong to accuse a whole nationality for one or a few people wrong doing. Sept 11 is a tragedy for all. Everyone felt what happen it felt as if you youself lost someone close to you when you in actuallity didnt. Everyone felt hurt and cried......... my family and I even felt the pain and we cried too it is our country too we are Arab Americans. After Sept 11th "Americans" became so filled with hatred and wanted to hurt and get rid of arabs. Why is that because an arab committed this act what does that have to do with the rest of us just because we are arabs too. The media is what filled everyones minds with hatred towards arabs. Saying that every arab was happy and dancing in the street. One not everyone is the same. Second there is a variety of arabs that are catholic, muslim, orthodox etc. Why is it when Arabs come to mind they think terrorist or muslim. It is because that is what the media has filled in their heads. The events of Sept 11th changed my views on the world. I felt very little respect for people who were bad mouthing arabs on and off tv and even online. On AOL you find many americans with their profiles saying we should kill all arabs, we should destroy their countries, who should deport them etc. We even have americans come into arab chat rooms and curse us out. I dont see anything done to stop this! People thought that the events of Sept 11th would make the arabs scared and run. For what!! Did we do this? NOO. It was my first semester at college and the day after i went back to school and people were bad mouthing arabs and teasing girls that are muslim. Well i dont take anything from anyone so i stood up for myself I said I am an Arab American and i have a right to be here i am a citizen and i vote. I also stood up in one pf my classes because a few students said they disliked arabs that they should destroy arab countries. I stood up and said I am an Arab American and told them not all arabs are the same how can you even say that you dislike arabs because a few people that did this terrible act. I gave them the examples of OJ Simpson and Timothy McVay and they felt pretty stupid and afterwards they apologized. Even my cousin who is a shy girl was in a sociology class with a professor that did not know he had an Arab American student in his class was bad mouthing arabs everyday...... she is a person who keeps to herself and does her work and couldnt believe her professor. This bad mouthing of arabs hasnt stopped. People still have hatred toward arabs but that is not going to stop us from living our lives. We are human, we are people, we bleed just like the rest of you guys, we cry, we mourn, we are no different from anyone and no one is different from us.
