<text>I had just gotten to work. I always come in a little early, and make it a point to go in the studio to see the morning guys. I walked in, and heard, "Hey look, an airplane just hit the World Trade Center." As we stood in awe, we thought (and prayed) that it were a mere accident. The guys went on air and told what had happened, and the phones began ringing. Being a Christian radio station, we were especially flooded with calls, prayers and opinions. Then, the second tower was hit, and so on....

The day was mere somber. We quickly organized a prayer vigil on the lawn of the CityPlex Towers, which ironically is the tallest building in Oklahoma (60 stories). We work on the 45th floor, 2/3 of the way up. Family members were calling, urging us to go home. No one did. We stood proud, knowing that we were the voice of comfort for the Christian community in Tulsa and surrounding cities and they needed us in a time of terror. Calls came in all day, one after the next, regarding announcements of Prayer Meetings for the evening in almost every church for miles and miles. We announced them all. We didn't play up the concerts, speakers and movie premiers we had coming up...they were no longer important.

It didn't really hit until I got home that evening, after church. My son had colored a huge (11x17) picture of a flag at school which says "Proud To Be American - Austin Donohue." I broke down, hugged both my kids, and we prayed. That picture still hangs on our front door today. It reminds us of the events, of who we are and of what we are proud of...the United States Of America and our Freedom.</text>

              <text>My best friend John called me and told me to turn on the T.V. He said that a plane had hit the WTC. When I turned on the T.V. I could not believe my eyes. When I saw the second plane hit the other tower the only thing I could do was watch in total disbelief. As may of you reading this may hear, this event was like watching a movie. I deeply felt the pain that I saw on T.V. but until you see something first hand it dosen't fully register. It's like when I would see the nations monuments in the history books when I was in school, you know that they are there but when you see them in person they have a profound affect on you. The one thing that still sticks in my head was the silence in the skies. Not one plane not even a vapor trail. I often wonder why something so small could mean so much to me. Perhaps this of all things brought this disaster into my world of reality. One day I hope to visit each all three sites. This will mark the time I will be able to completly understand the scope of death and destruction.
I suspect that I will shead more tears when this day arrives.
For now I pray for those who are without there loved ones.
I hope they will find peace.

By Robert j .Dorn

I don't know what my true reason is for writing these thoughts down? Is it because I am just tired of repeating to friends and family the events of that morning, as I viewed them? Yes. Is it because I am a history buff, and historian (of a minor scale) and an amateur genealogist, or because I think it?s an event that any 'eye witness' should keep his/her memories of? It?s all of these.
Firstly, I should explain that I work at 75 Varick (7th Ave.), now called 1 Hudson Square, the building that stands 'exactly' on top of the Holland Tunnel, which, as of this writing is still closed.
I am approximately 9 or 10 blocks just north of the WTC area. I work on the 12th floor of the building, and my Library office faced the beautiful view of the former Twin Towers to the South, and the Jersey City and NJ shore to the west. I am a librarian at Audrey Cohen College.

At approximately, 9 AM morning I was on the Q train, in the middle of the Manhattan bridge (for neophytes, this bridge is Parallel and just north of its more famous neighbor, the Brooklyn Bridge) when an announcer/conductor came on over the speaker saying, "plane just crashed into World trade tower" [that's the closest I can come his exact words at the moment.]

Most of the people on the train, leaned to the left side windows and we saw our first view of the towers - both of them - with large gaping holes and smoke and small flames coming out of them.
Several of us began the flurry of small talk, trying to guess what had happened, no one really knew for sure. Lots of speculation. The thought of buying a small discardable camera came to me, and as we arrived in the Broadway station at Canal Street, I bought the camera at the small little newspaper shop there.
As I exited the subway station at Broadway and Canal, I started walking west on Canal Street (my usual route, currently, to work at Varick St) towards the river. All during this time looking up at the two towers on fire with all the plumes of smoke. this was about 9:10 AM or so? At the same time on each corner I was taking pictures from different vantagepoints at each corner. Already the crowds had gathered at each corner with that awful look of unbelief on their faces. It was my own expression of disbelief and awe at the same time. At this point, I didn't know what had occurred, and was hearing snippets of talk about airplanes and 'attacks' etc. What I saw was the now familiar gaping holes that I had described earlier. I was under the impression that perhaps this was something similar to the 93 attack, and perhaps there may have been some loss of life. I had no impression of the further disaster about to unfold before my eyes.

It was maybe ten minutes or so (don?t' quote me) when I noticed sirens already sounding, policemen gathering on each corner, directing traffic away from areas below Canal Street area. The people in my building seem to have looks of haunted anxiety on their faces. I still had not seen anyone else who worked at the college. I don't remember whether I was asked for ID as I entered the building, but as I got off at the 12 floor, got out and saw the Security officer, he was already shaking his head and telling me that the building was being evacuated. Also, the Vice President for Administration had come around the corner at the same time. I do not remember what I asked them, except whether anyone had gone/been in the library where I work. One librarian was mentioned, whom they said was sent home. I later found out that she had seen the whole event and the planes hitting the towers (which I was too late to see). At that point I exited down the elevators and went out to the street to gather more information. I had heard that there were deliberate attacks on the buildings, but there was still a lot of confusion.

In a few minutes I crossed the street to take more pictures of the burning disaster in front of me from the all too blue and beautiful sky of that morning.
By this time, many fire engines, Emergency vehicles, Police cars and other emergency vehicles had rushed down Varick street (lower 7th avenue) sometimes having to blast their horns or sirens to get through the very confused menagerie that Varick street had become. On the other side of the street, I saw one and then several administration and faculty members of the college whom I acknowledged. I crossed over when I saw my friend and colleague Steve from the College.

Within the next few minutes, Steve and I listened to several others who had gathered on our corner, the rumors and other guesses at the origins of this. The fires and smoke were still billowing out of the towers. Debris was falling occasionally, and what I didn't know at first that it was not all debris but also people jumping to certain death to escape, I suppose more certain and immediate death by the fire storms started by the airliner fuel that we were later to learn was well over 2000 degrees. I was sure by this time that I had the story straight that two airplanes had for some reason crashed into both towers and ignited them. Somewhere between photos and following up rumors, we were interrupted by a man who came running with a phone in his hand shouting that the Pentagon had been bombed or attacked or something similar to what had just happened here. I did not, could not, immediately believe him. But, eventually my doubts were preempted and we knew it was true from other reports around us. We knew no exact details and really did not still know what had occurred.

Steve and I decided after standing around for some time, to go look for a coffee house he knew which he thought would be open and where there was a TV where we could get the news and find out more. After walking up and over to Hudson street closer to the Hudson River side of town, we found that the caf? was closed.
We decided to head back and Steve decided to depart and try to get uptown and home to Chelsea. I had already heard that there were no trains or subways running and the bridges were closed. In a while I would find out that most of this was already true and soon, everything would be closed down, except walkways for people to get across to Brooklyn or whatever borough they needed to get to get home. I was sidetracked again by wanting to hear and see more and take more photos. This was just minutes after the first tower had just collapsed. There was much confusion, shouting, crying, but no obvious violence. I crossed to the East Side of Varick in front of the Chase bank, and noticed that I couldn't see the two towers, but just the North tower and a plume of smoke where the other had been. In disbelief I asked the hysterical woman next to me, who was about the burst into tears, where the tower was? She cried, "It just collapsed!? I stood there in dumb disbelief and really not knowing what was going on in my mind at that moment. I could only think of all the people who were obviously in the tower. Of course they hadn't had time to all get out! There was a man with a set of binoculars who started talking about the people jumping. I looked up and it was obvious that some of the specks I was seeing amongst the debris were people jumping. Several people were crying out at that point, and the woman next to me was still crying. About a few minutes after that as I stood watching, someone yelled 'It's falling!" meaning the second tower. I quickly took up my camera snapped several pictures, still in denial of what I was seeing, but taking it all down in film anyway!

There was much crying and moaning after that. The situation around me just got worse and there was more and more confusion. I stayed around for probably another half-hour or so, trying to ascertain more information and whether there were any trains running and any way to get home.
Soon after that I noticed a truck driver with his truck and a radio on parked on the east side of the street next to the Chase bank. Several people approached the truck, listening closely to this vehicle and radio. He confirmed the attacks on the Pentagon, but still no specifics.
I realized that many people including myself were in shock and continued to try to understand that horrible sight of the falling tower we had just witnessed. I still cannot believe it.
Within 20 - 30 minutes I started asking people and MTA employees what was running and decided to find a way to get home. I never expected I would be walking the entire 8 or more miles to Prospect Park in Brooklyn, but I did.
At this point, the area began to look like a war zone of sorts. There were many more emergency and police vehicles gathering into the area and slowly, they seemed to be blocking people from going south below Canal street, which is still the cutting off point.

Then I decided there was nothing more to be done, or certainly nothing I could do. I lost interest in taking any more photos, and ascertained that perhaps the bridges to Brooklyn were open to pedestrians. I started walking with a slowly increasing crowd of 'refugees' (we really were refugees at this point) east towards the Manhattan bridge which is just parallel to the Brooklyn bridge.
As I got closer to the bridge I began to see the increase in crowds. I also noticed that despite the fact that some people along the street had said that the bridges and all subways were closed, the traffic and crowds were still going towards the bridge and it seemed in the distance that the bridge had pedestrians and traffic slowly going across.
I stopped once or twice to ask MTA employees who I saw blocking the subway entrances, whether the bridge was open to walkers. All they could tell me was that they 'weren't sure' and I should go ahead and try.
Once or twice I glanced back at the sky above what once 'was' the towers in the distance to see nothing but an increasingly large plume of smoke, sort of like a small nuclear bomb had been detonated. Also, there was a smoky, acrid smell in the air, which only increased as I approached the bridge.
I proceeded to the bridge entrance, and at first wasn't sure whether I had to bear right and go on the pedestrian entrance and walkway or just walk across the bridge. There was a steady slow stream of cars and trucks on my left also entering the bridge entrance, but also a parallel line of pedestrians ('refugees' if you will) on the right side, which I then decided to join.

As I walked, I watched the people around me. I was astounded at the increasing amount of soot and debris covered souls who seemed to definitely be exiting a 'war zone' or a bombed out area, depending on how you viewed it.

I listened as I walked to several 'stories' of what had happened to those refugees. I heard some scary stories of 'mere escapes'. Soon about 1/4 of the way across the bridge I started talking to a tall afro- American gentleman, who had on a very expensive looking three piece suit completely covered in debris and soot, carrying his work, seemingly in his valise. (Word?). As we talked he explained he had just escaped by exiting the (south) tower because he had gone down to go to the ATM across the street. If I remember correctly (not sure at this point) he had left the area as he saw the second tower attacked and then saw the first tower fall. My memory of our conversation at this point is rather unreliable and I cannot remember details that well.

I ended up walking for another hour or more, intermittently trying to flag a taxi, or catch one of the buses heading up Flatbush Avenue. All of this was to no avail and eventually I gave up and decided, since a gentleman had told me that Prospect park was only about 5 ? 7 blocks ahead (that didn?t make much difference to my feet at that moment) I walked on.

One of the few uplifting moments of that disastrous morning was the different groups of people lined up along Flatbush Avenue (this is FLATBUSH AVE mind you!), giving out Water and soda for the walkers... or should I say, ?refugees?. We must have looked like that as we walked slowly and quietly for the most part, across the Bridges towards our way home. I stopped by a group of young conservative Jewish girls who were handing out soda, and got something from them. This was the only highlight of that day.
I kept walking, observing the human collateral from this attack. Finally, I reached Prospect Park, from the War Memorial side and started walking through on the East side. As I walked there were small groups of people who had obviously gathered together for their walk balk, or perhaps just joined each other on the way. I did not feel like talking much at that point, but merely wanted to get home, perhaps turn on the television for the news and find out more.
This event will forever be impressed upon my mind and I can only think of two other events which will have such significance; the day President Kennedy was shot and my own father?s death when I was eight years old in December of 1960.

              <text>I woke up on September 11, 2001 with fond memories of the days before: my Mom had spent 3 weeks with us, visiting her grandchildren. (We have five sons, aged 2 through 9 at the time.) On September 10th, we sadly put her on a plane going back to her home in South Carolina. It was a beautiful day on September 10th; the sun shone brilliantly, and it was gorgeous outside, so we spent the entire time before she had to get on her plane touring New York City, concluding our visit with the Twin Towers and World Trade Center area. I remember the tears that flowed down my face when I turned around and left her at the gate of the airport, wishing there was some way that I could keep her here. I called her at home late that night to make sure she got home - she didn't. At midnight, I was frantically calling Spirit Airlines to find out what could possibly have happened. Two hours later, Mom called to say that she was okay. Her plane was delayed on the runway, and she didn't leave New York until hours after we left her. So when I got to work on September 11th and heard that two planes had been hijacked and flown into the Twin Towers, I was not only horrified, but eternally grateful that by God's grace the terrorists chose September 11th and not September 10th to attack us. My heart wrenches for the families of those who were lost. I can say that I almost know your pain. I pray that you find the peace of God, which passes all understanding, and that His perfect love finds a place in you.</text>

              <text>On the night of September 10th, I nursed my one year old for the last time. I'll never forget the last day I nursed her. The next morning was like any other. She was playing on the living room floor as I laid on the couch, 10 weeks pregnant, watching Good Morning America. I just turned on the TV before the first plane hit. It was so horrific! I had a sinking feeling in my stomach and called my mother. I told her to turn on the TV and asked her if she thought it was intentional. She was still asleep and I don't think she realized what I had said. It made me feel better to hear her voice but the miles between us seemed greater. I felt the need to be with my parents to make sure they were OK. I called my husband at Chili's. I desparetly wished he was at home with me. I told him to go turn on the bar TV and that I loved him very much. I hung up the phone and just stood in my living room, in horror, watching the North Tower burn. I kept thinking of all the families of the people in that building.
When I saw the second plane hit the South Tower, I fell on the floor and started crying. At that instant, I knew for sure we were going to war. I knew there were horrible people in this world!!! My little girl was still playing on the floor and I felt like her freedom was taken away in that moment in time. I couldn't control my emotion. I called my mom and my husband again in tears. I couldn't get my eyes away from the TV. All day, I cried for the people in the buildings, on the planes, at the Pentagon, for all the families affected and for my babies.
My freedom was violated. My baby's future was forever changed. I was afraid for my unborn child as well. What a horrific day. I'll never forget it. Now, I know what the flag means. I know how lucky I and my children are for being born in this country. We are all one people...AMERICANS! One year later....I still haven't forgotten. </text>

              <text>Home on my off day, tuned in to tv to catch the last 15 min of the am news...some advertisement I see of a movie. A plane crashes into the WTC goes the story...but wait it is REAL! An accident I think. Then the announcers say it is the pentagon (get yer facts straight I think) I am getting very confused and scared coz it IS REAL. I called my dh and am screaming...by the time he gets in the TV room ANOTHER plane crashes into WTC and I KNOW it is no accident. My mind races to a friend who is in danger. I tore out the door in my PJs to the neighbor's house, her grandson is the friend I mentioned. Banging and bashing her door I have tears pouring down my face, then and now as I write. She made it to the door and I jab on the TV. She gets the idea quickly by then 4 planes crashed and we wonder how many more. We aren't that far from the Houston Ship Channel and the danger of that exploding is terrifying. Friends & loved ones work there. My skin is crawling just thinking about it. We managed to hear from the NYC friend, he had stayed home from work sick God is so good. We prayed but didnt know how to pray just God take care of everyone, strengthen our President and our nation. We were glued to the TV......more horrified of the collapse of WTC, seeing the ppl jumping out the windows, knowing all the ppl in the fires in all 4 crashes burned to death. I felt sick inside, like my life had been sucked out. For the first time in my entire 42 years of living I felt afraid, not safe anymore and completely shaken to the core. We ventured out as a group of neighborhood ladies 4 of us to Wal-Mart for supplies, we didn't know what to expect. Bought up water, batteries, shotgun & pistol shells, bleach, gasoline, food, just like we would have for a flood or other disaster. All the shoppers were in a daze, cashiers were weeping, ppl weeping and praying in the store. I wanted to scream and run I was wound up so tight. Phone lines were jammed. All we could do was stay home and watch. The roads were eerily quiet. School let out ASAP. Our work had grief counselours but nothing could console us like prayer. All thru the work day in the days following ppl just stopped and prayed spontaneously for solace. Anger, frustration, grief, disbelief, fear, panic were stirring inside me like in a blender. It has been a year but I feel like it was yesterday. I never want to forget this horrid act because so many died, so many more were impacted in the shockwave afterwards. I commend our President in his handling of the matter. He let his human side show in addition to his presidential side. Seeing his tears made me feel I wasn't alone so much. Never forget the martyrs of Washington, Pennsylvania and WTC. God Bless our Nation. </text>

              <text>I was at work in the Health Information Section at The VAMC in Okla. City. A fellow co-worker had the radio on, when the news came that a plane had crashed in the World Trade Center in New York. We were horrified and as the news came of the plane crashing into the other tower and then Pentegon we were all in a state of shock. As so often happens when moments of tradgety occurs I began to write down my thoughts in a form of a poem, below is the Poem.

Thoughts

We saw the unthinkable,
We heard the unthoughtable,
the sound and the fury numbs senses and mind,
Here in America, how could this happen?
Perhaps a different place,
Perchance and different time.
No, the reality is clear,
the tears they fall like rain,
and wet the bleeding sod.
The grief that seems unending,
reaches up to the heart of God.

A few days past as I saw how horrific the damage was and everything that the people of New york was going through I penned another poem.

Feelings

I wish I could feel your pain,
To sense your grief and loss,
I wish that I could be the one,
to carry your heavy cross.
The burden is so heavy,
mere words cannot describe,
the hurt you must be feeling,
the emotions locked inside.
Each day that passes onward,
each moment that seems to last,
healing comes in knowing,
the worse has finally passed.

With Presidents resolve to find the ones that had done this terrible thing and the declaration of war I once again wrote another poem.

America, We Rise!

America we rise,
And stand in solemn passage,
Marching into the battle's fury,
Undaunted in the face of the foe.

America, we rise,
and stand in solemn passage,
On distant battlefields the victors cry
For glory, honor and liberty,
we've laid down our lives and have died.

America we rise,
and stand in solemn passage,
For loved ones, friends and wives,
For children yet unborn,
For Freedom's sake,
America, We rise!

I think that what happened was so devastating that mere words fall short of even explaining the feelings, and thoughts that most Americans had. We cannot let terrorist fill us with so much fear that we lock our selves up and refuse to go about our daily living. We have to continue on, we have to contiue to travel, to do our business and to face the future unafraid, I think that is what makes us all truly American. Not to be a afraid of some bully who is trying to put fear into us.

              <text>I wrote this poem, in shock, the day of the events. I consider it a gift from God to have written it, as I have no power over words such as this.

                   You are just...

We make this journey, through a life so hard, we turn to You in pain;
	As we live out the horror, that's entered our lives, that never will be the same.

We watched our friends, and loved ones fall, crushed by the evil deeds;
	By those misguided, who live apart, from Your Son whom everyone needs.

And sadness rings, throughout the land, as we turn ours eyes to You;
	For faithful You are, our Saviour and Lord, so trust in You we do.

For in Your knowledge, of all we do, You're watching over us;
	 Those wrapped up, in sin and death, most Holy You are and just.

And while the bad, still reigns on earth, You remind us now and then;
	That home were not, and perfect wont be, until you come again.

To witness then, Your millenial reign, as You call us to Your side;
	For we shared with others, Christ's power and love, with the Holy Spirit inside.

And those be martyred, in Your Name we pray, their souls are never alone;
	That under the wings, of angels You sent, to Heaven you called them home.

And justice be dealt, by only Your hand, they get their just rewards;
	The ones who rejected, the Son's sacrifice, it's Hell they all look towards.

But those of faith, who share the rest, we find in Christ today;
	Will live forever, and cleansed by the blood, of Christ to whom we pray.

              <text>Memories of 9/11

I took an early train to work on September 11, 2001. That day I had a meeting scheduled with my supervisor at 8am. The 6:17 am train would take me to the Hoboken, NJ terminal instead of directly into New York City as the later ones do. I was fortunate that on this fateful morning I went to Hoboken because Hoboken is directly across the Hudson River from lower Manhattan and it offered a fantastic view of the WTC. Little did I know that this would be the last time I saw the towers from Hoboken. While I cannot remember for sure, I hope I looked at them, they were hard to miss, especially since my train comes in at the eastern end of the station directly in front of the river.

From Hoboken, I would have to take the Path train into Manhattan. I walked down to the platform, on one side, there were the Path trains to 33rd St and on the other were the trains to the WTC. As I walked to the bottom of the stairs, I saw that the 33rd St train that I needed to catch had just left the platform. Since I was in a rush to get into the city for my meeting, I thought about taking the WTC train, which was still in the station. I would then take a subway up to Fifth Ave and 14th St where I worked. As I took a few steps toward the train with the distinctive ?WTC? above the door another 33rd St Path entered the station, so I turned around and got on it instead of the WTC train. While I would not have been there during the attacks, it still gives me the chills that I was within a few seconds of getting on the WTC Path and being at the WTC on 9/11/01.

My 8 am meeting went on as planned. My supervisor was scheduled to fly to the UK at 12 noon that day. Just as the meeting was ending and my supervisor was leaving my office a co-worker came in and announced that a plane had crashed into the WTC. I called my wife who works in New Jersey and told her. Like most people, we thought that it was a terrible accident by a small plane. I walked to my supervisor?s office, it faced south, and I wanted to see if I could get a view of the towers. The view of the WTC was blocked but I could see the smoke rising.

Several co-workers and I went down to the street to get a better view. We stood on the corner of 14 St and Fifth Ave and had a clear view of the gapping hole in the north tower. It was evident that this was not damage from a small plane. I remember seeing the papers flying out of the building, it was a surreal sight, one of many I would see that day. I kept thinking of how many people must be dead and injured. After standing there for what seemed like an hour but in reality was probably only 5 minutes, I decided to go get the camera I had in my tenth floor office. I grabbed the camera and went back down. As a looked to take the picture, I noticed that the second tower was burning. My first thought was that the fire spread from tower one. I took a few pictures then went back upstairs. That is when I found out, from the radio, that a second plane hit the second tower.

At this point, I was numb. I could not get a handle on what was going on, my mind could not process it. Know one could concentrate on work, and all I know is that I did not want to be cooped up in my office listening to the radio. I wasn?t afraid that my building was next, I just wanted to be outside with everyone else. I decided to walk the 20 blocks (subways closed down) to a seminar I was supposed to attend at 10 am. I knew it was going to be cancelled, but I needed something to do. As I walked north up Fifth Avenue away from the WTC, I remember the sirens, all the sirens, and there noise filled the air like a thick fog. I kept looking at the Empire State Building waiting for a plane to hit it next.

As I approached the hotel where my seminar was being held I finally got a hold of my brother on my cell phone. He was off that day and I figured he could fill me in on what was happening on TV. While I?m talking to him a guy standing next to me, who was also on his cell phone spurts out loud to anyone who will listen, that his wife just told him that one of the towers just collapsed. We tried looking downtown from where we were but from that point on Seventh Ave., the WTC was not in view. I told my brother to check it out on the television and he confirmed it. Again, my mind said, this is not happening.

I went inside the hotel and as I expected, the seminar was cancelled. Then I did a silly thing, I called an associate and asked her to put together a sales report, which was part of the information, I needed as a follow up to the meeting I had that morning. I cannot believe that I was thinking about something so trivial when the world around me was coming apart at the seams. I guess it was defense mechanism and my mind was pretending everything was normal as a way of getting through the day.

At this point, I started walking back to my office. I walked down Sixth Ave. so I could look at the remaining tower as I walked. It seemed that everyone in New York was out on the street by this time. All you could hear were the sirens and the radios from all the cars pulled along the curb. Not many were talking. Some were crying, most just had a stunned look on their faces.

When I was around Sixth Ave. and 24th St. the south tower started to collapse. I watched as it just crumbled in slow motion, and you could hear a muffled roar as it came down. As horrendous as it was, it was quite spectacular, the glass and metal shimmering in the beautiful sunlight against a perfectly blue sky. When it was gone, I started walking again, some guys were cursing and shouting other people were crying. I started saying aloud to myself ? They finally did it, they wanted to take the towers down and they finally did it. I was thinking of the WTC bombing in 1993 where the bomber?s plan was to knock one tower into the other.

When I got back to the office, I found out that management had closed the office but no one had gone home because all the tunnels and bridges out of the city were shut down. We were locked in so to speak.

Everyone was milling around the office trying to sort out what had happened and wondering what was next. By now, we all knew about the Pentagon and the crash in Pennsylvania.

Employees that lived outside on Manhattan were trying to arrange to stay overnight. I did not want to stay overnight I wanted to get home to my wife and two daughters. That?s when it dawned on me, Manhattan is an island, maybe we can get out by boat.

Three co-workers and I walked from 14th street and Fifth Ave. to 38th street and Twelfth Ave. to catch a ferry back to Hoboken, NJ. While walking it felt that we were unwitting extras in a disaster movie. The streets of Manhattan were virtually empty of traffic with the exception of emergency vehicles. It was quiet and any government building we may have passed was blocked off you could?nt even walk in front of them.

We waited in line for four hours while military jets circled above the city. While on line, waiting to get on a ferry, all you could see in lower Manhattan was smoke it was as if the whole lower tip of Manhattan was gone. All I kept saying to my co-worker, the same man who hours earlier came into my office with the news of the first plane hitting, was I can?t believe they?re gone. I thought the towers would last forever and they probably would have if left to the elements not to mankind.

I finally made it home by 6pm that night. The first thing I did was give my wife and kids a big hug and kiss. My brother was also over at my house. We eat some dinner. I hadn?t had a bite to eat since 5:30 that morning.

After eating, I put the television on and for the first time all day I saw the pictures of the planes hitting the Worls Trade Center. One particular shot really stuck with me. It was of the second plane hitting the south tower and in the frame you could see a flock of birds taking off after being frightened by the explosion and I thought to myself, I?m ashamed to be a human being today.

              <text>I retired from QWEST Communications in August 2001 and was at home on September 11. I came downstairs a little after 8:00 and turned on the radio to PBS Morning Edition as I did every morning. As I was making coffee and waking up, I was aware that what I was hearing on the radio didn't make any sense. I heard Bob Edwards say that another plane had hit the Pentagon at 9:40 and that the first tower had collapsed at 10:05. Reports were just coming in about a plane crash in Pennsylvania that may or may not be related to the events in New York and Washington. It was time to turn on the TV. As I watched in horror with millions of other Americans, I remember thinking that the world would have to get used to seeing only one tower in the World Trade Center. Then at 8:28 local time, the unthinkable happened as I watched the second tower collapse. I sat, stunned, and watched the cloud of smoke and ash envelope lower Manhattan. This image I will carry to my grave. As the day progressed I followed the events with the rest of the world. Reports of the Pennsylvania crash were developing. I heard stories of brave passengers and crewmembers who rushed the cockpit and sacrificed their lives to prevent yet another disaster.

I don't remember what day it was that I opened the Denver Post and saw that the pilot of flight 93 was from Ken Karyl Ranch. About a mile from where I live. The name Jason Dahl was given as the pilot. His picture was on the front page. I didn't recognize the name, but I recognized the picture. I had met Jason Dahl at my favorite "watering hole" Q's Pub. I hadn't seen him for a year or so, but I immediately recognized him and I thought, "My God! I know that guy!"

He wasn't a regular like myself, but he did come in once in a while to have a beer with a couple of his friends. We were introduced by a mutual friend and kind of hit it off. We didn't become close friends, but we did shoot the bull and swap a few jokes. He told me that he was a pilot for United, and enjoyed being home with his wife and kids and being able to get out for a beer once in a while. I remember thinking that this was a "good guy" to have as a friend. I remember his great laugh and wonderful warm smile. He knew my name. But then at Q's, everybody knows Pete. And to think, I didn't remember his.

I went out to breakfast with a friend this morning, September 11, 2002, and read in the paper that there was going to be a memorial service downtown at noon. I asked my friend if he wanted to go. It didn't matter, because I knew that we were going. As we sat there and listened to the names of the passengers and crew on flight 93 read aloud, I cried. I cried for my friend Jason Dahl and for all of the others who died that day. I cried for the times in which we live, and I pray that in my lifetime we may fine peace and unity on Earth. God bless America and the world we live in. May we preserve it for our children and generations to come.</text>

              <text>It was a normal morning. September 11 WAS a normal morning. Of course it was, it was just another working day for me. Wake up early, get dressed, drink my cafe-con-leche, read the morning paper. I laughed at the headlines: "FCAT Scores show Students Progress". I thought to myself, 'Man, can't they think of something better to put on the front page?'. I wish I had never thought that.

I had just concluded a great session of teaching with my second graders. They were in other classes, their specials ( Computers, Art, etc. ). I was on my break. I decided to get some coffee and hang out in the front office. As I was walking down the hallway, I saw a colleague of mine rush towards me, his face filled with shock and, God knows, every other emotion you can think of. "A jet has just slammed into the World Trade Center!" He screamed, tugging at my sleeve for me to follow him. I thought he was joking and I didn't think it was funny. I decided to go to the front office to see for myself what this was all about, and, when I got there...I saw it. Everyone was crowded around the television in awe of what they were seeing. I stayed where I was ( I couldn't move! ) I saw the second plane hit the second tower live. And I also saw the explosion at the Pentagon. And I also heard about the third plane land somewhere in the distance. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was actually happening. Someone had actually attacked us. How was this possible? Who could have done this, why? They must pay. They must pay the ultimate price! Those were the thoughts running through my mind. I was so emotional that I didn't know what I was going to do. My kids were about to come in from specials and the Principal told us not to say a word because some of our kids had family in the towers.
After a few minutes, I decided to cry my eyes out. But when I went into a room to do so, I couldn't do it. I was so shocked and apalled, the tears wouldn't come out. Later that night, my mother told me that it was okay for me to cry. I knew it was, but it had to happen on my own. Well, time has passed and I will never forget what happened that day. I know this seems odd, but I live my life everyday thinking about September 11. THere hasn't been a day gone by when I don't think about it.

              <text> I was at Washington-Lee High School. The closest high school to the Pentagon. We were just starting second period when we got the news, planes had crashed into the World Trade Center. The teacher turned on the television and that began the ritual that all teachers would do for the remained of the day. We sat with our eyes glued to the tv, some students in shock, other with tears in their eyes. The room was so quiet and that only made the voice of the reporter more omnious as he report what had happened to the World Trade Center.
Then about a hour later, ww got news that a plane had crashed into the Pentagon. The school went into lockdown. Cell phones, banned usually in school, were alllowed as students, with parents and relatives that worked around the Pentagon area, madly dialed phone numbers, hoping for their voices to answer that they are fine.
For the rest of the day, all students remain in school, watching the news. We felt fear, sadness, angry. We were frighten, scared, mad. Many had question. How could this happen? Why didn't anyone know? but then we realize that was what made it a terroists attack. It was a surprise attack that was to cause fear. And we fell for it.</text>

              <text>I had left for work from my home in Lady Lake. I got there at the usual time, just after 9 AM. I did'nt have a radio in my car. So
I did'nt know what had happened. I was talking to my manager who takes care of the Shoe Dept. where I work. I guess it was about 10 minutes. And told her, "I have to report in, so my husband won't worry about me." As I live 30-35 min. away from my job.
Well, I come around the corner. Where the washers and dryers flank
the aisle leading to the Breakroom. There was a HUGE TV screen, it was always on when I came in. I thought it was very strange and thought what I was seeing was a movie. I had never seen the Twin Towers like that. I figured it was a movie like everyone else did.
Then, into the Breakroom I go. The
next thing I know. I'm really seeing the first tower in heavy thick, black smoke. I had to do a double take, shook my head. Then thought it was an explosion. Well, I could'nt use the phone as someone else was using it. I went into the Training Room and called my husband. He's from Brooklyn, NY
and I did'nt know if he was home still. Turned out, he was and had
turned off the TV set and was listening to the radio. He told me a plane had gone in. I could'nt believe it. At first I thought the pilot made a mistake or had a fatal heart attack and could'nt control the plane. He said, "NO!!!
And a 2nd plane just went in the other tower!!!" I said, "WWWWHHHAAATTT???!!!" This is nuts, I thought. I could'nt believe it at all. Until I finally saw the video replay.
It was so stunning and unreal to me. Again, I thought, okay. This
pilot flew in too close as he may
have been making observations to radio to the towers at La Guardia,
Newark or Kennedy.
Turned out totally different. To this day, it's still too unreal to believe. And with the anniversary coming up next month. I know that the last time I saw these towers,
in July 1993. On a clear Summer's
Day, coming home. Seeing them standing there, sparkling in the sun. I never thought it would be the last time I would see them physically. This tragedy shows how
terrible man can be, when led in the wrong direction. How sad this still is.</text>

              <text>I went to my U.S. History101 class as usual. I was surprised that there were so few cars there that day. There was only a handful of students there and noone was talking. It was very unusaual. Our instructor was late. When he arived he said that he was surprised anyone showed up and that most classes had been canceled. Obviously something stange was going on and I seemed to be the only one who didn't know what it was. I'll never forget what he said next, "I don't see the point of sitting in class today and studying history when our country is MAKING history." My heart sank as I knew that something awful must be happening. I was too embarrassed to ask anyone what was going on so I headed for the Student Lounge to watch the news. I got there just in time to see the 2nd plane hit. As the events of that day quickly became clear, I kept thinking of my sister and her family who I just returned from visiting in Hampton Virginia 2 weeks previous. As she has a son in the navy and her home is surrounded by naval and airforce bases, I was concerned for their safety. I picked my children up from school that day and we went home and had a long and frank yet calm discussion on what it all meant to witness this day. That evening around 8pm, I went to gas up my car because I knew prices were soaring. I noticed that I was the only one on the road. No businesses were open except a few gas stations and everyone's lights were on in their homes. It was quiet and surreal. the next few weeks my mind went back and forth between reality and the dreamlike feeling that I seemed to share with the rest of the world. Today I and others at the University of Idaho are wearing nametags of those who were killed last year in an effort to show respect and unity. School children are wearing red, white and blue and there is a nervousness in the air and a quiet that makes me reflect on my thought of 9/11/01. But, I know that God is with us an all is well. </text>

This is not a story this is a call on our government and Americans to reach out and help. Why,isn't there a fund for treating the ones who have become seriously ill trying to save lives then in the clean up. I have heard The President say he and the government would take care of what has resulted in health problems with more than 40,000?? And,the ones we don't know about yet?? I hear many who said that air wasn't at a dangerous level say now they were told to wear protective gear. Did they have gear?? The first responders who went in immediately after to attempt to save lives. How can we not take care of the hero's??? How can we not support families suffering because of what happened that day? If they adopt service people why can't the public support a family??? If every American adopted a family or more than one we would be doing something for those victims of September 11. And not handled by the government, the public, the victim groups should have a board that over see's who gets the funds to prevent what other's do and take help away from those who need it most because they will use even these people to gain for themselves. I want to help, I want to make a difference in a families life. No matter how small it might be I know I did something for someone who gave for me and mine.
I hope all that read this hears this call with their hearts and we start something that tells the world we love our family, all Americans.
Thank you</text>

We were just about to Portland, Oregon and I heard the news on the radio. I was terrified!! I thought of all those people and was just in shock. We pulled over and I just cried. Then I realized my parents were flying out of Portland, Oregon this a.m. and heading for Michigan. More panic! I tried to reach my sister to see if the plane left. They let me know that the plane turned around and landed and they were on their way to pick them up. Relieved that they were okay. I prayed for all the others that lost their loved ones. Today I still shed tears for all of the lives lost and for their families. </text>

              <text> I was awakened by the phone around 8am(central time), it was my friend ,Sheri."Bob! A plane just flew into the World Trade Center!".
     I was highly confused, a mixture of not being a morning person, Sheri's incredibly fast speech, and the fact that this was day two of cycle five of my chemotherapy session for colon cancer and was rather weak. All I could figure out how to say was "What?"
     "The Trade Center! New York! A big plane just flew into it!"
     "Accident?"
     "I don't know, the news is back on, I'll call you back"
     I layed there not suree if the conversation had just happened. Before I could get the TV on another call confimed it had, and it was worse than I could have hoped: "A second plane hit the other tower!" ..... at this point my story isn't too different from most people in Canada or the USA - Why? - Who? - My God! - Where next? ...what i want to share is later that morning i was at the hospital laying in bed getting my treatment, and i can't tell you how many people were there or anything else, i just remember that a roomful of us were all there fighting for our lives, a battle I'm sure some in that room have already lost, and every one of us could think of nothing but "My God, What can we do to help those poor people?"
