My teacher told us all to go upstairs where the T.V was and watch history being made. My friends and I were all unsure what he meant but we sat there and watched everything occur on t.v. We didnt get to see the first plane hit but we saw the second plane slam into the building. I just remember being shocked at who ever would do this to thousands of innocent people. I was also scared for my dad whose a senior chief in the Navy i was unsure how this would effect him.I remember sitting through school and in every class we did no work just talked about 9/11 and watch it on t.v. i remember some kids were joking around about it and thought it was funny but it did not amuse me it was no laughing matter. I am a very patriotic person and so is my family and the events of 9/11 effected us all. I was really moved by all the courage of the volunteers and the fire-fighters and now the soldiers fighting in Iraq there the true heroes of America not the celebrities or famous people everyone wants to be like. I think we should support our country no matter what, espicially since American lives are fighting for us in a different country we should give them all our support and pray that they all make it home. I am so proud of all the soldiers and all the people who helped on 9/11. Response: I watched it live on TV from the Tech Ed Classroom at my school. I began to feel panic. The teachers have walkie-talkies, and kids were being pulled out left and right for early dismissal. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I had just gotten back from taking my daughter Amanda to school. My husband had just gotten home from work. When I got in the door he called for me to come into the other room, where he was watching television. He said look at this, I thought he was watching a movie, but he said no it's real and it's happening in New York City. At first I cryed then I got scared. My first thought was, ARE THEY GONNA HIT SOMEWHERE ELSE! And even though it went through my mind I still could'nt believe it when they did. I went back and picked my daughter up from school, and we explained things to her the best we could. I cryed for days and was having nightmares for awhile afterwards. My heart went out to the victims families and still does today. I for one am so proud of America and Americans for showing such courage and determination. I will always be praying that something like this never, ever happens again. Thank you for letting me talk about this tragedy. Someone yelled that a plane hit one of the Trade Towers. At first, we thought it was a small private plane, but then someone yelled that the second Tower had been hit. We were then informed that the Pentagon had been hit by a third plane. Meanwhile we were panicked as reports were flying that a plane was headed for the immediate DC area. Then all heck broke loose and in a matter of minutes some 2,300 employees out of our total of 2,325 employees began leaving the building to walk wherever they could get to. Streets were total gridlock. I lived in Virginia at the time and I had no place to go if I left the building. I had an open telephone line, an on-line connection, a restroom, a cafeteria and plenty of water. I tried to get a ride to Virginia with a co-worker but we could not get his car out of the parking garage. Too much gridlock. I decided to remain in our building until the subways were up and running again. At that time I rode the subway to Virginia where my husband picked me up. I ate my peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and visited some of my friends on the other side of the cafeteria. They were all trying to get something out of my friend Cody. They kept asking, "what happened?" Earlier that day he had a doctor's appointment, and watched the news of the day on the TV in the waiting room. Of course when he came to school later that afternoon, none of us knew except him. So of course all he would tell us is that something bad happened. Finally he told us, and that was the first time I heard it, terrorist attack. After recess everyone went to the gym, and we got all the details on the attack on the World Trade Center. there had been two planes that hit each tower; a 747 and a 737. First was the North Tower and then 18 minutes later the South Tower was hit. Soon after, the South Tower started to collapse, and came down into a pile of rubble. the smoke and dust filled the wide, shadowed canyons between the buildings. People tried to outrun this horrid wall of dust only to find themselves trapped from all around, with no place to run. To top things off, the North Tower also collapsed a little while after the South Tower. All this news was overwhelming, and to me it was kind of unbelievable. It took a while for it to set in. He said "Turn on the radio, there's been a terrorist attack in New York." As a former Marine who had studied terrorism, he recognized the work of terrorists even before the President used the word. We turned it on just in time to hear the 10:00 AM news, which included reports about the World Trade Center and the Pentagon being hit. One of the children commented that at least we were safe because we lived in a rural area, and then we heard the report about flight 93 going down in Somerset. We stayed by the radio (we didn't own a TV) for the rest of the day, numb and shaking. We prayed the entire time, realizing that there was nothing else that we could do. We had friends who were scheduled to fly west that morning and we didn't know what their flight was, or where it was from. We had no way of knowing if they were alive. We also had friends and family in Washington, DC, who live and work within sight of the Pentagon and White House. One friend even worked at the Pentagon on occassion. As I listened to the reports throughout the day, I noticed a sharp contrast between the beauty of a late summer day, and the ugliness of an evil heart. The sky was cloudless cerulean blue, but my heart felt as though a shadow had fallen. Somehow the birds' songs seemed like a mockery, in the face of what had befallen our country. He told us to turn on the TV, because the World Trade Center had been hit by an airplane. My first reaction was, "isn't there more than one world trade center...and what are the world trade centers?? What significance does this event have to me? ...and then I said that we didn't have cable and that we didn't have any news channels...he insisted that this would be on every channel, and it was. I remember feeling ignorant as an American, that I heard the news from somebody in Germany first, and that he new what the buildings were and I didn't. After pondering why the attacks happened, and considering my first reactions, it all came together. We as a country, are fairly ignorant about the rest of the world and our own country. A country with this much power needs to be more informed about the world in order to do a better job, and be more understanding of the other countries that make up the world. Also, we are desensitized to violence due to the proliferation of violence in our movies and TV shows. Tell us your story: I was on my way out the door to take my daughter to her 2 month doctor's appointment when my husband called me from work to tell me a plane had crashed into the WTC. He didn't know any more details but he said he would call me when he did. We did not watch tv so we did not have cable or local access. I was numb for most of the day, just waiting to find out what had happened. When all of the banks closed down, I knew something very traumatic had happened. I couldn't get online to get any information either. I felt lost and in a time warp. I did not realize how important having everything at my fingertips had become. When I realized what actually had happened, I remember thinking about my daughter and how my husband and I had gone on a spiritual journey to decide whether or not to even try to get pregnant. And here she was, barely 2 months old and having to be a part of this day. I feel sad that she had to know this but I am not saddened that we kept moving on with our lives. She will not know fear and will not live in terror because I refuse to let ANYONE think that they can have control over her and us. She will always know what it is like to be an American and she will always have the same, if not more, freedoms afforded to her that her father and I have. We pray more often now and say a blessing at the table, no matter where we are. I am no longer concerned about "offending" others in a public place because we practice an alternative religion. I want my daughter to see that we have faith in a higher being and that with faith and love, all is possible. It just seemed to me that people had somehow just forgotten where their heads were on the road, and this is an hour before anything in the world went wrong. I remember saying to myself, I just can't wait to get back to the house and get off the road and away from this craziness. Then I remember getting home and getting online like I typically do every day to chat with my cousin in Upstate NY, My Hometown for 26 years too. While we were chatting it up I remember my cousin sending me a message that said "OH MY GOD, TURN ON YOUR TV IF IT ISN'T ALREADY ON!!!" Well, my tv was not on so I turned it on to CBS. I see the aftermath of the first plane in the World Trade Tower. My first thoughts at that moment were oh my god, how did that happen. As I was sitting there watching the coverage I remember seeing the second plane off in the distance behind the towers and I remember seeing it get closer and closer and I realized it wasn't just a small plane it was a jumbo jet. As soon as that second plane hit my cousin and I each sent the same message to each other, that message was "that was no accident, this was planned" and next message was one word "Usama". For some reason it was just instantly in my mind that this was the work of a madman known as usama bin laden who many people didn't even know existed. I am an avid follower of daily news locally and world wide..I like to be well informed of what is happening in this crazy world.. and I remember having heard talk of bin laden in the news in the recent weeks prior to Sept 11. To this day I still don't know why I thought that maybe it was the fact I had kept up with the news, but my gut didn't tell me it was anything but him. My next thought turned to the people trapped in those buildings and the people who had already lost their lives. I prayed that since it was before 9 am when the first plane hit that not as many people that are usually in those buildings had gotten there yet. I kept praying that many people saw the first plane and didn't continue on their way to work. Unfortunately I had to work shortly after all this happened so I made my phone calls to my family in New York and my family in New Jersey only to find out that not only was this a tragic day for all of NY it was also a tragic day for my family that will be hard to forget because of what happened in NYC that day. My younger sister lost her baby that morning and the events in the city that morning now make it hard for me to forget that too, I only hope that as time goes on it gets easier for her and for me. I then headed to work listening to this all unfold on the radio. On my way to work I hear on the radio that a plane has now hit the pentagon. I am horrified by all this and start to panic but decide I must go to work and keep my chin up and try to deal with this as it goes. While I was at work the towers came down and the day just seemed to be getting worse. Then the news of the downed plane in Pennsylvania. Could it get any worse? In the next few hours and weeks it did get worse, but it reminds me of something my mother always tells me, "things always get worse before they get better." I guess that is true but at the moments it doesn't seem comforting. My mother was one of the many brave people to step foot on a plane in the next two weeks after september 11. My heart was in my throat the entire time I knew she was on that plane and I was never so happy to see anyone in my life as I was when she landed in Orlando. But as I said, things get worse before they get better. My mother left to fly back to NY the day that Bush declared war on terrorism. So as you can imagine my heart was in my throat again and I am so proud of my mother for getting on that plane without showing an ounce of fear. I thought to myself what a great day it would be to have off. As I walked down Boylston Street to work, I looked up and saw a jet flying out of Logan Airport, flying low over South Boston and the South End. I wonder now if I caught a glimpse of American Airlines flight 11 or United Airlines flight 175 on its way to its doom. After sitting at my desk for 45 minutes, I got up to use the mens room. While I was there, I heard someone mention to someone else, rather non-chalantly, that he heard a report that a plane had flown into the World Trade Center in New York. At the time, I thought, as I am sure everyone else who first heard it, that perhaps it was a small Cessna. I remember that a WWII bomber had once flown into the Empire State Building in 1945. As I walked back to my desk, I noticed a large group of people gathered around the plasma television on our floor. I walked over and realized the magnitude of what happened. There was a gaping hole in the North Tower with smoke and flame billowing out of it. We had no sound on the television, so we couldn?t hear what was happening?just look and wonder among ourselves. Suddenly, there was a huge explosion. One person in our group said, ?I think I just saw another plane hit the other tower.? From the angle we were watching on television, unless you looked quick, none of us, except this one person, saw the second plane. I remember saying, ?No way?it has to be jet fuel from the first plane or some secondary explosion in the North Tower.? Moments later someone who was listening on a radio confirmed that indeed it was a second jet that had hit the South Tower. And at that moment, I am sure everyone in that room instantly knew that this was a deliberate act of terrorism! Since there was no sound available on the television, everyone who had a radio in the office turned them on. We got much more information from them than from what we could see on television. I immediately called my girlfriend at work. Shoot!?she was in a meeting all morning. I left her a message to call me IMMEDIATELY. I also left her an email to call me ASAP! I then called my parents; it was about 9:15 now. My father answered and I told him to turn on the television?.NOW! He started to make inquiries but I told him to turn on the TV?..all his questions were answered by the sight he saw. We spoke a bit about what was happening and I told him what I knew so far, I told him I would call later and hung up. I went back to the plasma television and watched a little more, thinking to myself, ?Those poor people in those buildings?.God help them.? It may sound strange now but I actually tried to concentrate on getting some work down, but it was difficult. Radios all over the office kept an up to the second account of what was happening, The reports on the radio started coming in minute after minute?.all NYC airports shut down, all bridges and tunnels into NYC closed. An underlying sense of panic started sweeping the office. If it happened there, what is there to prevent it from happening here in Boston. I don?t think anyone even thought about work the rest of that morning, everyone just wanted to know what the HECK was going on. Of course, all sorts of reports started coming in ? an explosion at the State Department, a car bomb on Washington Mall, the White House and the Capitol being evacuated. Some was true and of course as we found out later some were false, but it simply added to the growing sense of panic at the office. A kind of mass hysteria started sweeping the office as any bit of news was twisted from the actual facts. Someone started saying that the MBTA and commuter rails had shut down. I called the ?T? and discovered this was not true. I had to literally stand on my desk and announce that the T was running and even tell one man to stop saying the T was shut down and not spread that kind of information. But that is the kind of panic that was beginning to take hold. And if it was happening here in this office?..what was going on in the rest of the country??in New York? Then reports came in that the Pentagon had been hit by American Airlines flight 77?.and pandemonium set in. People to my left and right were wondering what to do next. Do we get the heck out of here before a plane hits our building? Maybe It?s over? How do you know? There could be dozens of hijacked planes out there. I?m a pretty levelheaded guy, but I just remembering thinking, ?What the HELL is going on?? It was difficult not to panic, to give into the fear. Some people were distraught, others outwardly calm, but I?m sure everyone had the same thought?..Whats next?! While we were all thinking what to do next, we continued to monitor the radio and television. Nothing but bad news rolled in as our trepidation grew with each report. All flights in the U.S have been grounded?all incoming flights to the U.S diverted to Canada?.the South Tower has collapsed?another airplane has crashed in Pennsylvania (United Airlines flight 93)?people fleeing Manhattan and Washington?the North Tower collapses?.you can understand why people were in a PANIC?everywhere in the US. Personally, I thought we are at war?that moment! Where would the next attack come from? Airplane? Car Bomb? The imagination ran wild. Shortly after the North Tower collapsed, my girlfriend called and said 2 words, ?Whats happening?!? She had just had her meeting cancelled by an officer of her company who told them the WTC buildings had been hit?and of course they had a thousand questions. I told her all I knew and she relayed the information to her co-workers. I told her that we may be evacuating our building soon and I wanted her to leave and go home with me as well. The stock market had shut down , so no work would be completed that day. We agreed that we would both leave and I told her to meet me at Back Bay Station. Although I advised her against it, she thought it would be best to walk over to Copley Square (a little over a mile). We finally did get the notice to leave the building at about 11:00 AM. From what I could hear on the radio, everyone was trying to get out of Dodge. I tried calling my parents again and there was a noticeable delay on the phone before I could get a line. Obviously, everyone in America who had a phone was using it that day. And the Internet??.Forget it!?I couldn?t even log on the volume was so high! I got through to my parents and told them we were heading home. From what they heard on television, most of Boston was being evacuated. I told them I would call as soon as we got home. Since I knew it would take about my girlfriend a good 20 minutes to reach me, I meandered about trying to figure out what was the best course of action. Obviously, the commuter rail would be the fastest way home. But then I began to think, what if some terrorist with a bomb decides to blow himself up on the train or the platform. That?s when I really began to become tense. That this could happen anywhere, at anytime. I went out to Copley Square at 11:30 and immediately noticed how quiet it was. Of course, no planes were flying out of Logan, but I noticed a definite pall in the air. No loud voices, no honking horns that you would normally hear in Copley Square. It was as if everyone was observing an extended moment of silence to those who had fallen. My girlfriend showed up and we hugged and headed for the train station. I didn?t tell her my worries (until after we got home), no sense panicking her. As we walked to the train, I told her everything I had heard and knew. She is pretty emotional and was getting upset by what I told her so I changed the subject. Luckily for us when we got to Back Bay Station, they had added extra trains, so we were able to leave immediately. It was a quiet ride home, with people speaking in hushed tones. Once, we got home, we watched the continuous coverage of the disaster. My girlfriend at times cried as she watched, I think I was too stunned to feel anything. We both called our respective parents to let them know we had made it home alright. At about 6:30, my girlfriend received a HUGE shock. Her best friend?s brother in law had been on Flight 11. Now, the tragedy really hit home. I later received a call from my boss to tell me not to come into work the next day, as the stock market would be closed. We talked about the day?s events for a while and expected to be back to work the following day. I watched the news until early in the morning, maybe hoping I would wake up from this national nightmare. My girlfriend expressed hope that maybe some survivors would be found in the WTC. I grimly replied that no one would be found alive in that carnage. But the day?s events really didn?t hit me until they started reporting that scores of firefighters had perished that day. The enormity of what had happened September 11 now set in. This was no nightmare or horror movie, this was very real. I wonder how all this will play out. It?s too early now to know the historical impact of all this. How will our children and grandchildren be affected? Will the reverberations of this attack be felt for decades? How will historians look at how we as a country reacted to this event? Fifty years from now, what will people say about this time in history? A hundred years from now, how will this event be remembered? I remember all the WW II vets saying to never forget Pearl Harbor. Obviously, we did forget and the result was another sneak attack even worse in scope. Will we learn from this? Or will we forget this moment and not be prepared for such acts in the future? Only the years to come will tell us that. But for me, as I write this nearly one year later (September 7, 2002), it is a beautiful day outside. I couldn?t help noticing how much it reminded me of September 11. And I can?t help thinking, that until the day I die, whenever there is another beautiful day, I?ll stop and think to myself??This is just like September 11......" Although I personally did'nt know any one that died that day I do know people that did. How this story touched my life was my husband was on a plane September 10th from Syracuse NY to Sacramento CA on what was only supposed to be a three day trip. I remember how my then six year old son came home from school asking me about the plane crash and saying "is daddy all bloody" it broke my heart and had to remind him that he talked to daddy last night that he was already in California. I can only imamage how hard it was for those familys who really had to deal with that situation. By the time I went to bed, the sun was up and people were going to work. About 1:00 PM I was awakened from a sound sleep by the telephone. The caller was a drinking buddy whose sense of humor often borders on the absurd. He also knows that I am nocturnal, so some calls are thinly disguised practical jokes. He told me that terrorists had knocked down both World Trade Center towers. I answered "yeah, right, couldn't you find a better excuse to wake me up?" He responded, "Jim, turn on the television and I'll call back in a half hour." I asked which station. When he said "any," I began to realize that something was very wrong. I was a few minutes late for class but the professor had not arrived yet. After sitting there in class a few minutes a friend of mine came in and said that a second plane had hit the World Trade Center Towers. All I could think of was the people in the building and their families. What would happen to the children whose parents did not recover from this awful tragedy? What about the mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, grandmothers, and grandfathers? Later that afternoon my mother called me at work to tell me that my brother and sister-in-law were fine. I said, "What?" not knowing that they had planned a trip to Manhattan after visiting Niagra Falls. This was their 2nd or 3rd yr anniversary September 11, 2001. They had planned to go to the towers on this particular day but for some reason, only God may know why, they decided to stay around the Niagra Falls area. I thank God that they were not there. Someone was really watching out for them that day. As for the friends and families of the individuals who did not make it, may God look over them all the days of their lives. Tell us your story: when i first heard of the attacks i didn't even know what everybody was talking about, everybody said "watch the TV! watch the TV! but the princaple had sent out the rule that all tv's were to be turned off. All day i heard exaggerated stories of "fleets of airplanes" to "An armed invasion" and it was not until one of my teachers had the sense to turn on the radio tht i learned what was really happenning. i was appalled that something like that could happen, and sick to my stomach in fear for for NeW York Relatives. We turned on the big screen tv and watched CNN recap the events, we then watched the second plane fly into the 2nd tower. We all knew then that we were under attack. We contemplated on ending the meeting because we all worked for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and weren't sure of what would be expected. We were then told that a plane had flown into the Pentagon and only blocks away from the Capitol and the White House we all grew cautious of what to do next. My father works in Crystal City and often engages in meetings at the Pentagon, which caused me to panic, not knowing if he had been at one of those meetings that day. I shocked myself because my father and I had only renewed our relationship recently. I later found out that he was in Atlanta on a business trip. I realized then that whatever we didn't have in the past was irrelevant. I knew then that I really did love my father and wanted him alive as long as possible. I am grateful to God that he spared my family and friends, but prayful to Him for those that weren't so fortunate.
