Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: The morning of September 11th will forever be burned into my memory. That morning I was planning to go there for a open interview day at Borders bookstore. The interviews started at 9 but I was planning to be there early so I can be one of the first in line. By some mystery I didnt wake up when my alarm clock went off at 7:30. At 8:30 I recieved a phone call on my cell from my best friend telling me I was late. I decided not to go and instead stay home and work on something closer. I turned on the T.V. and all that was on was news. I was confused, what was going on? They were talking about how some planes were hijacked. Next thing i know a plane is being flown into Tower 1. i was in shock. I just sat there on my couch and watched the screen as the reporter confirmed that a plane had just ran into the tower. Then another plane flew into Tower 2. It looked like a scene from a movie. I couldn't believe my eyes, the towers were burning. I couldn't tear my eyes away, it was surreal. Then they fell, one after the other. It hit me then, I could have been there. Tears rolled down my eyes and I started screaming "why?". I called my brother-in-law, since he was going to be down there, I felt such a sense of relief when i heard that he was back uptown and away from danger. I tried to call my best friend, who went to Bergtraum High School, but i couldn't get through, all circuits were busy. I was worried sick until that night when he called me and told me that he was alright. The school had been evacuated when the first tower was hit. The next week was a blur. I actually don't remember what I was doing, all I remember was thinking this isn't real. It couldn't be. I finally cried on the 6 month anniversary of the attacks. I went to Battery Park City and was at the temporary memorial of the bronze statue that had survived. Just seeing it made me so sad, and I cried. Even now, I am still thankful that I had woken up late. Maybe God was looking down on me that day. We both decided to keep my son home from shcool that day . I remember feeling like i lost my security and then i started to cry. My children did not know what was going on and i thought it would be best to keep it that way. In the hours following i had my self glued to the radio just praying it was a dream. Only to find out my prayer like so many others that day had not been answered. Although i did not loose any one dear to me that day and i had never been to New York or the Pentagon or ever Pennsavania it was still a great loss to me . My home my sense of security and my heart had been shatterd . It will never be forgotten or forgiven. But we must move on and so i will . Tell us your story: I remember having breakest and turning NBC for the morning's news and apparently a hug 747 had later crashed into one of the World Trade Center Towers. I was confused as to what was going and I'm thinking "how could that have happened?" I later heard about the Pentagon. Something didn't smell right after that. Later when the second tower was hit you know it as not an accident. Again later in the morning, before I went to school I learned of Shanksville, PA's crash in the field. I was actually thankful that nothing else was hit. When I got to school, I walked by office to see that the people inside had brought small travel TVs (about the size of a small crate) with them, they were as glued to the news as I was after I had finished school for the day much later. After I got home I was unfortunate enough to see 7 WTC fall, and I thought "how many more?.." A few nights later, after Conan O'Brien had come back, I saw him give this heartfelt message about everyone on the show acting like a jackass for entertainment purposes, but they took this very seriously, considering they lost some 3000+ New Yorkers alone, even a writer of the show "Frasier". I just find it funny as time goes on, we seem to forget how unified we were. The whole of congress was singing on the front steps, but now we are back to square 1, with the war in Iraq over, we are back to petty squabling among Republicans adn Democrats, its makes me sick. The Dem. & Rep. were behind Bush so much, but now its nothing like that. I wonder how long unity lastes after Pearl Harbor was? After Oklahoma City and the Federal Building bombing, you would've thought that nothing else would've happened, but then again you living in the only and truley free world or nation if you like, you tend to wonder if anything ELSE will happen now. I had woken up at 8am L.A. time, and panic instantly set in. I had no idea what happened - I thought maybe a family member had died - until my husband turned on the television. Now, I work in the Century Plaza Towers (used in the opening of "LA Law") here in L.A., and they look very much like a miniature World Trade Center. Since I am not familiar with New York, my first thought was that we were watching a movie of my building. When my husband said it was real and he started crying, I thought they were my buildings. I instantly called the office, fearing all of my co-workers dead. I was scared to death. My beautiful buildings, I cried. My friends. My lifeblood. At that moment I wanted to die myself rather than believe terrorism on this scale was even remotely possible. However, I have to admit that when I finally realized it was not Los Angeles but New York I was relieved...until the Today Show indicated that an estimated 50,000 people worked in the World Trade Center. I cried even harder, repeating why? Why? Why? over and over again. I wished it had been my buildings. I called Ana, my best friend who is a flight attendant with American Airlines and is based in Chicago but had flown to New York the day before. She had Sep. 11th off, but knew one flight attendant who she thought was on one of the planes. She cried and screamed and was completely incomprehensible for nearly an hour. I tried to be brave for her. We both had friends that worked for both American and United and did not know their fate. For the rest of that awful day my family and I stood on our balcony and watched the Downtown Los Angeles Skyline in the near distance, numb from fear that we would be eyewitnesses to an attack on the West Coast. It was eerie beyond belief to have the TV on, with all the chaos and smoke and the horror of it all going on in New York, while my home skyline stood still and quiet and as beautiful as a picture postcard. I did not sleep that night, along with many others across America. The next day I had to work, as we had people on flights that we had to reschedule. Let me tell you, driving up to the office - keep in mind it looks the the WTC to a point, but only 44 stories - was truly terrifying. I told my husband to turn the car around, and underneath my sunglasses my tears flowed in an unstoppable stream. I did not know anyone in New York. I just couldn't believe it...and I couldn't go to work, regardless of the fact that all airports were shut down. My desk is on a high floor and faces LAX, and I was sure that I would not have enough time to run if I saw the nose of a 727 looming in my windows. I thought I was going to die. I thought my husband was going to die...he works in a hotel where the King of Jordan happened to be staying, and since Osama Bin Laden and he are enemies, I thought the hotel was going to be blown up. I feared a lot of things, but I eventually went to work after putting on a brave face. On September 13th, I was at work and on the phone when the power suddenly went out. Normally I would have been just annoyed, but not this time. I called my husband and said goodbye. I put him into a total panic because I had told him that when I looked out of my office windows, there were hundreds of people streaming from my building, running and crying into all directions and even into oncoming traffic. It was a nightmare. Being on a high floor, I ruled out jumping and instead headed for the stairs. I was the last one out of my office because I had made that call. People were crying and running down the stairs. I was two blocks away before I breathed again. ...All this because the Department of Water and Power decided to reset the power in our building and not notify a one of us, and the building management had not thought to tell us because it was kind of routine - except it was usually done after hours. Just not this time. The Oprah Windfrey show happened to be taking some tape of our buildings at that time and were caught off-guard. The reason I know this is because about an hour after this chaos I decided to go home, and they were on the sidewalk interviewing people. They interviewed me for ten minutes. All my friends saw me on Oprah the next week during their World Trade center special, during the segment about how we West-Coasters felt about the tragedy...I had a good minute or two of airtime. Tell us your story: I remember I was at home watching television, being in the first three months of my pregnancy with my fourth child I was always tired on the couch. I remember seeing the news broadcast and not really understanding what had happened until about the 3rd or 4th time of seeing the footage. By then, my husband being a Ligonier Police Officer had been called by the Department, was put on alert. Ligonier, IN being a very small town has a high Arabic population. I remember my Son being in school in first grade and I was terrified to be away from him. I was contimplating whether or not to go and get him, but when my husband got the call from the department I was terrified and called to school to inform them I was coming to get my son. They were very sympathetic with me and gave me not trouble. The children were not given to much information on the matter and the staff handled it very well as not to scare the children, I was very greatful for that. After having my son with me I prayed for the situation in NY but also prayed for the situation in our own area. We were not just in the stix anymore, untouched, everyone was vulnerable. I am greatful for my faith in Jesus. He is my protector. His word says that he will make my enemies my footstool. He is my protector and with him I tried to instill in my terrified children that God would be with us no matter what as he was with those in the twin towers that day. The scriptures are very clear that America will protect Isreal. I know that we will stand strong, the bibles says so and it has never been wrong. My faith in the Word of God has kept me strong and it what will keep this Great Country of ours strong as it did from the day it was founded, "In God We Trust" this is what our country was based on, this is what will keep us strong. On September 11, 2001 I was living in Queens and I was on the E train heading to work. I was in a hurry because I was already running late when the train stopped at Queens Boulevard and just sat there. Eventually we were told to exit the subway. As I came above ground there were were people everywhere. I didn't pay much attention, this is NYC. I kept trying to get a bus into Manhattan because I was late for work and no one really knew what was going on. A bus driver told me "The WTC has been hit!" He even showed me the smoke billowing in the air. I didn't believe him. I told him to stop joking, that was impossible, I didn't have time for this, I was late for work. After attempting many times to find a bus I just stopped and I started to listen to everyone around me. They were all saying the same thing...we were under attack. I was shocked. I tried to call my boss, my friends, my mother but my cell phone was dead. I eventually made it home and I put on the television set. The second tower was falling right in front of my eyes. I tried to call my sister, she lived in Washington DC. I couldn't get through. My roomate had made it into work. I manned the phone lines at home. That Friday the two of us walked down Lexington to see what we could do to help. we signed up to volunteer with the Salvation Army, we read missing people posters, we looked for people we knew, we managed to push on...... On September 11, I had been in the USA for about two months, and was staying with my friend in California, after having visited other friends on the East coast. In fact I'd flown out of Boston a few weeks earlier. I have severe tinnitus and insomnia, andhad just managed to get to sleep at about 6.30 am when my friend knocked on the door and then moe or less burst in, babbling about planes hitting the WTC and the Pentagon, and one tower collapsing and how he was sorry to wake me up, but this was the biggest news story since Pearl Harbour. My head was screaming like a banshee, but I staggered downstairs in a daze and watched the telecast coming live from New York. Some 15 minutes later we watched the second tower come down, live. I have to say that is the most compelling image I think I have ever seen on television, including the first moon walk. Like millions of people I suppose, we spent the rest of the day in fron of the TV watching updates. Finally Brad decided he couldn't stand it any more, and we went out to get something to eat. I suppose it was an indication of how upset he was that I think it was his decision to go to Taco Bell. Normally I'd have to drag him kicking and screaming in there, as he loathed the food. I remember it was pretty busy, but also very quiet, and nobody was talking about the attacks. After having been saturated with it for 10 hours on TV, this seemed almost surreal. There had been a similar sort of event, on a much smaller scale of course, in home community of Hobart, Tasmania in 1996 when a gunman went on a rampage and killed 35 people. After that strangers would come up to you in the street and start talking about it, and it would all be very emotional. But after 9-11 it seemed more like nobody knew how to react; as if we were all almost scared to bring it up. Instead US flags started appearing in catr windows, in the windows of peiople's houses; people would be selling US t-shirts in the carparks of supermarkets. The local copy shop, rather tastlessly I thought, was selling laminated copies of the front cover of the newspaper from September 12. I stayed with BVrad for another 3 weeks before flying back to Australia, where I was amazed to find people seemed perhaps more openly obsessed with 9-11 than they had been in the USA. There was a very great deal of solidarity and sympathy for America back in Australia at the time. I remember the eerie emptyness of LAX on October 1st when I flew out. I suppose that my emotions as a visitor must have been different to most Americans - though I had been to the USA so many times that I thought of it as a second home. My emotions at the time... it's difficult to explain. I think the sheer scale of the thing was ovewhelming and rather numbing. I didn't feel terribly frightened or angry or emotional most of the time at all. However, sometimes some 'little' thing would hit me, like buying Newsweek and seeing the photos of people jumping out of the burning towers, and suddenly it would hit me in the guts really hard. I guess watching one person jump from a building brings it home much harder than watching a building collapse from two miles away. I suppose if I had a dominant sensation in those weeks it was that something had changed. What I don't think many of us realised at the time, was just how long-reaching and fundamental that change would be. What did they have to gain? Why? As I was sitting at my desk listening to the news on the radio, I was in tears and didn't really notice until someone asked if I was ok. I was then instructed by my boss to lock the front doors in the lobby. I spent most of my day in a conference room watching the coverage. I just couldn't fathom the grief and pain that they were going through. Knowing that they would probably never see there family again. Wishing that they were running late and that their lives could have been spared. My heart was actually breaking for those that had lost their lives. Also for the people that had loved ones in there and not knowing if they were all right or even still alive. I was saying prayers for people that I didn't even know and knew that they were heard. I knew that beyond the grief there would be peace. I felt that. Knowing that they will indeed see their loved ones again brought me comfort. I have a friend who lives in New York City and not knowing how far away she was or if she was injured. Looking back on they past year it kind of makes me upset that it took something so tragic to bring the people of the United States together. to actually stop what we were doing and actually become one against something so bad. I just hope that as time goes by we can remember the people that died, the heroes, the families who have lost their loved ones and those children that will never get to know that relative that was lost. Let people know that they snuck up on us once but that it will never happen again. We are a united front that will not stand for this kind of destruction again. I know that in my heart of hearts we will infact get to see those people again and thank them for the way they lived and died. I will alway have a place in my heart for them. Usually, I'd let the answering machine get it, but for some reason I picked it up. My husband asked me to put on the t.v. I did and there was nothing. I clicked around until I found a channel that would come in. Just in time to witness the second plane hit the World Trade Center. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I felt it had to be a bad dream. I watched and cried with my daughter in my arms and my husband on the other end of the phone. He couldn't come home since he works for the gas pipeline that runs right along the Arthur Kill and up into the Meadowlands, Staten Island and Long Island. He was required to stay late because of fear that there may be more attacks. I felt helpless, scared and alone. I called my family and my parents, brother and his family all gathered here at my house. Just having my loved ones near gave me strength. My poor mother was re-living the events in Japan back in 1944 when, at the age of 11, she witnessed the bombing of Hiroshima. My mom was only 50 miles outside of the center. Fortunately, she was not injured. But she lost some friends and distant relatives. We all tried to console one another as the night wore on. We didn't know what else to do. We just sat and talked. I cried for 2 weeks after that. Especially at dusk when it would look like those poor people (if any survived) would have to go another night without being found. I had held out hope that more survivors would be found. I was wrong. Now, a year later, I am home with my daughter, trying to not break down as I look into those beautiful green eyes and wonder if the future really is bright for her. Being a Nursing Student, I had become accustomed to a lot of terrible things ... but nothing as terrible as the events of September 11th. We had just come back from a break when a fellow classmate had rushed into the classroom. She stated that America was under attack and that the World Trade Centers were 'gone'. Our professor left the room to see what was going on. She came back with an email that had been sent to all staff stating that anyone who was directly affected by the events or persons who were unable to continue in class were to be excused without penalty. All but one person in the class stayed, I think because we didn't understand or really know what was going on. I logged on to cnn.com during lunch and saw some fuzzy pictures, but nothing prepared me for what I saw on the television screen when I got home that afternoon. The minute I walked in the door I turned the television on and was shocked. In a matter of five minutes I saw the first tower being hit, the people screaming, the second tower being hit, the people running, the pentagon on fire ... then the towers collapsing. I just sat there and a feeling came over me that I didn't know existed. I was scared and sad and angry. I stayed up all night watching the news, flipping from one channel to the next, trying to get different points of view of what had happened. I watched in horror as the screen showed people jumping. I cried a lot that night. The next day we were in hospital for our clinical placements and our hospital had been put on alert for victims ? but we learned that morning that there were no more victims so our alert was taken off. That was all people spoke about. On the way home, I heard someone complaining that they were ?pissed? off that they had missed their favorite TV show because of all the coverage. I wanted to say, ?Don?t you understand what happened? How can you be so selfish? All those people are dead, thousands of people are affected, millions of lives will be changed and you are mad that your TV show wasn?t on?? But I didn?t. Instead I stared straight ahead and tried to forgive their ignorance. That night I was once again glued to the TV, watching the families as they posted pictures of their loved ones and people who survived telling their story. I think by the second night I had seen the planes hitting the towers and them collapsing well over a thousand times .. not just on TV, but every time I closed my eyes. The shock wore off a bit that night and the reality hit me. Our world was very different. People suffered terrible horrible deaths that were unimaginable. I cried harder that night than I had ever cried before. I knew that for each tear I shed, millions more were being shed by people across the world. Even though I was an 8 hour drive away from New York, the events had affected me so hard. I can?t imagine the pain the people of New York and Washington must have felt. For days, weeks, and months afterwards, I because obsessed with what happened. I had to know everything. I had to know about how the towers were built, I had to know about Osama Bin Laden, I had to know about the people who died, the people who survived, the Pentagon, the families, the women who were pregnant, the planes that hit the towers, the town in PA. People became worried that I was spending so much free time on what had happened. They didn?t know why I watching the planes hit over and over or why I was torturing myself with it. I didn?t even know myself. Not until about a week ago. I realized that I was trying to understand. I thought that by informing myself about what happened, I could find reason. Coming upon the First Year anniversary, I know now that there is no understanding ? there is no reasoning. I don?t think I have come to terms with that 100%, and I don?t think I ever will. As a nurse, we look at why things are happening and understand the events behind it. I had to admit to myself that even though we can heal people through understanding, we can?t always understand ourselves. I?ve watched many of the specials relating to the attacks and they are the same. The same sadness, the same anger, the same heroics ? but each time I hear a new story, I am in awe. I have a new found belief that there are amazing people who would give up their own lives in order to save others. On September 11th, I will watch TV, reflect, love my family and friends and send thoughts of solace out to those who were affected so much more than I. I will know that no matter how hard it is for me, there are thousands out there who are hurting even worse. I know that the world is a different place than it was one year ago, and I know that many more changes are in store for the whole world. They say that love heals all, but I know that it takes much more than that. It takes heroics, courage, intellect, peace, war, love and so many more things combined to make our world a safe one to live in. Through high levels of alert that hang over us, there are high levels of feeling connected. The world was brought together through grief and tragedy. Everyone is scared, but we are all scared together. I wish to express my deepest of sympathies to all those affected in New York, in Washington, in Shanksville, and around the world. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City, a plane was collided into the Pentagon, and yet another plane was bombarded into Somerset County in Pennsylvania. When tragedy struck us, our lives were forever changed. Osama bin Laden is to blame for his role in destroying these people. He held such a great hate against the United States because of religion that he would do anything to harm us. He thought slaughtering many people?s lives and hearts was the best way to harm us. Then, the introverted coward hid away in one of his demented tunnels like a slobbering baby, with his trained bodyguards at his side to fight for him. He knew that if he did get caught, he would surely be done for. The World Trade Center was an important symbol for the United States. The individuals in the Middle East greatly respect soaring buildings. To them it shows admiration and credit. Hence, when they were looking for America?s weak spot to strike, they hit on the WTC because to them it seemed so great and they themselves wanted the tallest buildings, not for America to have them. They achieved this ruthless objective by hiring hijackers to capture control of the planes and fly them into the World Trade Center. The first Twin Tower was hit on the 80th story, followed by the second tower getting hit on the 60th story. Before these giants plummeted to the ground, thirty tons of fuel burned for 40 minutes. The sprinkler systems made no impact on the blazing inferno. Either did the asbestos, which was how fireproofing was done in the 60?s. They did their job, of course, but it wasn?t enough to help the World Trade Center. After the Twin Towers collapsed, everything around them was swallowed by an enormous dust cloud and deluged in ash. People fled into buildings as fast as their feet could carry them. The result of this terrible event revealed many deceased people. Not only people in the buildings died, but there were also people around them and passengers in the planes. The passengers, scared to death, prayed for dear life and called their loved ones at home for their last goodbyes. The commuters were aboard the planes for over 50 minutes. These people?s family and friends were greatly affected by this catastrophe. Even though I did not suffer the grief of losing a loved one, or know anyone that even worked in the World Trade Center, I too was touched by this disaster. When I was outside for a fire drill, I had no idea that thousands of people were jumping from 100 story buildings, only to hit cement, or being drowned in stuck elevators. The first time I heard of the horrifying news was when I walked into English class and looked up at the television. My first reaction was that I was shocked. It seemed to me that it came out of nowhere; I was definitely not expected anything like this to occur. I can even remember what I was wearing as I stood there dazed and taken aback. My outfit consisted of black pants and a red shirt. It broke my heart to see the teachers evenly discouraged by this calamity. In most classes, the teachers didn?t even bother trying to lecture us; instead, they turned the television to CNN and watched in horror as the World Trade Center fell down and smoke rose from the Pentagon. Only the day before, the World Trade Center loomed overhead New York City, and within twenty-four hours, they were nothing but a heap of rubble. Ironically, when disaster hit America, it did have some good effect on us; everyone pulled together. Whether it was comforting someone, raising a flag at his or her home, donating money, giving blood, or working up some major elbow grease at Ground Zero, everyone drew together. America will not always be the same, but without the help of firemen, policemen, President Bush, or your every-day companion, America wouldn?t be close to normal. I don?t know how the people that brought this catastrophe in to play could live knowing what they did, but I certainly will always remember it. I feel very fortunate that no one I know was embroiled in this event. It will always be a vast memory in my life, but not a fond one. When the first plane hit the WTC, I was just finishing my prep period. As a teacher, you are isolated in your classroom and do not have access to news instantly. I did not know of the tragic events of September 11 until 11:30 am. One of my colleagues entered my room and asked if I knew "the news." I expected her to tell me that one of our students had been suspended. When she began to tell me of what has been happening, I was grief struck, like much of the world. I remember exactly what I was teaching and who was sitting near me to see my face turn ghost white. At that point, we were unsure if the attacks on the US were finished, I was worried about a possible attack on Philadelphia- just across the river from where I was. We dismissed school early that day. It was a fast drive home for me-- home to my loved ones. I was stunned. I was upset. I was horrified. I still am. I watch specials on television and continue to cry for those families who lost loved ones and I cry for our country. As a teacher, it was difficult to answer children's questions regarding the attacks, as I had no answers to satisfy my questions either. It was an experience we had to go through together. As a country, it is something we have all had to grieve with together and grow stronger from together. Tell us your story: Last night I watched some of the footage from the September 11th terrorist attack on our World Trade towers one and two in NYC. I remember watching it live on the TV in our classroom at school that terrifying day. The whole class grew silent and no one talked for the rest of the period. We all watched the screen in awe as they showed the first and second plane hit the towers. In all my life I don't think I will see anything quite like what I saw that day. Watching people's reactions that were in New York City as it took place was unbearable. Everyone just kind of stood there in a loss for words. People running the streets holding up signs with their loved ones names on it and shouting out their names in a hope that they would have gotten out in time was grieving. The hurt all the families and friends of these innocent Americans are going through must be ridiculously painful. Today 9/11/02, our school did a Remembrance Memorial for all the innocent people who died that horrible day. Tell us your story: Ben Dominski Global 5/29/02 Final Project 9/11 Project On September 11th, it was a bright and normal day at Barker before the terrible tragedy took place. I was in school at Mr. Olsen?s 3rd period study hall when I heard the bad news that took place in New York City at 8:48 a.m. Out of the four planes that were hijacked, three hit their targets and caused about 3,200 deaths. The flights that hit their targets were Flight 11, which crashed into the north tower of the World Trade Center at 8:48. Then Flight 175 crashed into the south tower at 9:03. Flight 77 hit the Pentagon at 9:45. The other plane crashed into a field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania 80 miles away from Pittsburgh at 10:10. After we turned on the television, I watched in horror as the south tower collapsed at 9:59, then at 10:10 I watched part of the Pentagon collapse. The last thing I saw was the north tower collapsing at 10:28 during my 4th period class. All I thought about as I watched the towers collapse was all the people that were killed and their families that will never see them again. I also was thinking who could murder so many people and be happy about it? As the day went on I tried to think about other things so I didn?t have to think about the tragedy. In all my classes none of the teachers wanted to teach, they just gave us a free day. Everyone watched the news as the news anchor gave us the latest information on the terrorist attack. It was then that I knew that this would be an event that my generation will come to always remember. When I went home I saw the misery in my parents eyes as they watched the news for hope that the rescue team might find people that were still alive and for the United States to find out who caused so much misery and so much death. That was the first day that I actually wanted to watch the news so I could see for myself who did this. After about an hour of watching the news they still didn?t find out who caused so much pain. I went up to my room to be alone and think. About a half hour later my mom came up and told me that they found out who did it. I went down stairs to see what was going on and the news was saying Osama bin Laden had planned the attack. Weeks later as I watched American planes dropping bombs I thought how could the United States kill innocent civilians in cold blood. The attack on America has changed my life by I don?t have the same sense of security that I once had. Knowing that another attack or the same thing could happen again has made me more cautious. She informed us that the World Trade Center had been hit by a low flying plane. Then we changed classes and ended up watching CNN for the rest of the day. As my friends and I looked on to the frightening site tears came to our eyes. And then we heard that the Trade Center had been attacked by terrorists and about 30 minutes later the World Trade Center had completely collapsed. When I got home from school my mother met me at the door crying she said that teroorist had hijacked four planes one crashed in PA, two hit the Trade Center in NY, and 1 hit the Pentagon. As I sat glued to my TV watching the horrible scenes play out over and over I felt so afraid. I was so far from either New York or Washington or Pennslyvannia yet I felt as though I was there with those people, feeling their fear, disbelief, shock. I wanted to gather my children from school and keep them close to me. I cried for those people in New York, on the planes and the firefighters that would never make it out of the towers and for myself-crying that my feeling of safety and security would never be what it once was. I also cried for my children and all the other children who have to face a future now where a spineless enemy may attack other civilian targets without concern and they will be the ones called upon to defend this freedom that we all hold dear. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I will never forget being on the Brooklyn Bridge when the north tower fell. It was all at once the most amazing and the most horrible spectacle I have ever witnessed. My heart and soul were pulled in several directions at once. I grew up in Tribeca, so of course I was concerned for my family and friends - but at the same time, I felt very unsafe standing in the middle of the Brooklyn Bridge walkway, and had already tried and failed to get into Manhattan to find my mother and grandparents. I was worried for them, scared for myself, and in shock from trying to comprehend the sheer magnitude of the atrocity. I was so stunned by the whole event, that I was unable to even cry until I was sitting at home watching the Yankee Stadium memorial 2 weeks later.
