Tell us your story: 9-11 started like any other day, I got ready for school, went to school, and went to my 1st period class. during 1st period nobody knew anything about the terrorist attacks and I didn't find out until 2nd period when our normally very cheerful teacher walked in and had a sad expression on her face. she told us what happened and turned on the radio. I was so devastated and cried. I was worried about all the people and families but was lucky not to have to worry about anyone I knew. during 3rd period our teacher brought in a television and we were able to see what happened to the twin towers. at the end of the day my mom came and picked us up and it took home. we lived on Fort Benning so it took a while getting through the checkpoints. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: It started out just like any other day. My first period class was art 2. It began at 7:45 and ended at 9:10. Next, it was onto World Cultures class. As soon as I stepped through the door, it was chaos. Everybody was sitting in their seats staring up at the television. I soon learned what was going on and took a seat myself. That whole period was surreal. I didn't know whether I wanted to cry or not. All eyes were glued to the television screen. We saw the second plane hit. Then the first tower fall. Finally the second. To watch such a tragic scene on a television screen was heart-wrenching enough. I can't even imagine how the people who were actually there felt. When the bell rang at 10:34, only 5 minutes after the second tower fell, nobody jumped up from their seats to leave like they usually do. Not one single person wanted to take their eyes off of that television screen. Except for lunch and the change of class, I spent the rest of the day watching t.v. Third period English class was horrible as I watched my teacher frantically make phone calls to her family. Some of them in New York. I, fortunately, had no family members affected by this horrible day. But my heart goes out to all that were involved. Now, one year later, we are all moving on with our lives. Looking back, it is still hard to believe that such an atrocious act was committed on our country. But we recovered. As a country, we came together and helped each other heal from the sorrow and grief. We proved that we can be knocked down, but no matter how hard the blow, we will always get right back up. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I live in Nashua NH and was on a business trip , the second week of a two week Western Canada swing. I was to meet co-workers flying in to Calgary on 09/11. I had met older half sister the night before for the first time. She was from my father's first marriage. Obviously, it was an emotional time for me, she is 41 and I am 38, so it's not like we are youngsters. The morning of the attacks, I had taken a shower and saw that that there was a phone message. My half sister left me a message about the attacks and was on the edge of hysteria. I called her back and asked her what was happening and she told me to turn on the TV. I did and was shocked to see the coverage. I then tried to call my wife on a land line and they were too busy so I called on my cell phone. I asked her if the TVs were on and she said yes, and I asked her if they were on the news channels. She said no, since we have two young children, the order of the day was the Disney Channel and Cartoon network. I told her what happened and to keep the kids isolated from it for now. I had to hang up because I was using a digital phone in analog roam and no way to charge the phone. I then was transfixed on the television. I had to extend my stay in Calgary and was mostly watching CNN the whole time, the other networks were showing grisly footage that I did not care to glorify by watching. The shock of the attacks and the aftermath were hard to take so far from home, but my problems were nothing compared to those in New York, DC and PA. I was able to email my co-workers, family and friends that evening, checking on the ones I knew traveled out of Boston, like I do. I was also trying to reach my mother, who was en route to Alaska and I did not know if she was there at the time or not. It was a time of watching TV and email people. I took my meals in the hotel bar, but it tasted like sand, like after a funeral, where you know you should eat, but it is going through the motions. I kept thinking " I fly out of Boston and that could have been me". The outpouring of support from Canada and the Canadian people was incredible. It never did get the play in the US, but that is understandable, seeing what happened. The rally in Ottawa on the National Day of Mourning in Canada was something to be seen. The Peace Tower grounds were awash with American Flags , with 100,000 + people there. I was able to get a flight out of Calgary to Toronto and spent two days there, having a close friend there helped. We talked a lot about the events and it drove home the points about mortality and the need to keep friends and family close. I drove home on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2001. The borders were a mess, everyone from Toronto was crossing in Buffalo and there reports were 5-7 hour waits. I decided to head east instead of south and crossed on the first crossing east Kingston. It was only 20 minutes, but when I finally did cross, the border guard had her hand on her holster, it being unsnapped for easy withdrawal and I had to show two forms of ID. I have never had to do that before at a US crossing. The drive through Upper NY State was surreal. Traffic was light and I made good time. The radio played news stories and outpourings of grief. When I crossed into Mass on I90, I noticed that there were troopers at every bridge. This drove the point home that this was not a dream, but reality and we had been attacked and would not know where and when the next would be. We still don't. I truly hope we can recover, and I hope that time will help those who lost loved ones. I still fly and the events of that day are in back of my mind when I take off, but to not fly and to change would give those who attacked us the victory. I refuse to do that. When I did find out my brother told me and we were actually both just awe struck and actually kind of laughing. The two biggest buildings in the United States just collapsed sounded pretty funny. As a group of us watched in the crowded conference room, we saw the second plane hit. At that point,I tried to comfort those in the room saying it had to be a terrible accident. Then I continued with my delivery of the work my small company had completed. As I went home to Hebron, Connecticut, a small town outside of Hartford, the drama was unfolding on the radio. Traffic was slow and cautious as we all tried to listen and drive, not knowing what would happen next. My job (as a 56-year-old grandmother) was to try and keep everyone I saw (and felt responsible for) as calm as possible. We did close the office and all went home to watch and wait. Then our oldest daughter called. She was pregnant with her first son and had been sent home from her job as Program Director for the Alzheimer's Association. She was crying and asked me, "What kind of a world are we bringing a child into? It's wrong to have children right now." That made me so sad. It's our responsibility to provide a world of love and support for our children. I went to her home immediately to comfort her. The rest of my story is like millions of other Americans. We watched CNN, we prayed, we cried (a lot)we gave blood, we gave money, we gave food and dog food for the rescue efforts -- and we tried so hard to understand why someone would hate us so much. My impressions of the country are that we have grown. We have more compassion. We try harder. We are defiant and scared at the same time. But most of all -- we are intent on building a better world for all the children -- not just my grandchildren, but the children of the world! I had just started a new job at the Naval Hospital aboard the Camp Pendleton Marine Base as a medical transcriptionist in the Emergency Room. I had trained on the 9th and 10th of September, with the 11th of September being a day off for me. I was alseep in my bed when my roommate and best friend, Mark Jones, came running up the stairs to our apartment yelling my name. He knocked on my bedroom door telling me to turn on the television. I did, and as soon as I saw the towers, I burst into tears. I didn't know what to think of it all, just that I was a combination of all emotions; The only thing I could think of was "Where is the President?" Then I heard about the Pentagon, which frustrated me terribly because I am a United States Marine, serving my country for 10 years. As soon as I gathered my composure a little bit, I called everyone close to me to tell them that I love them. To this very day, I wish I was still in the military, serving my country and doing my part to protect our freedom and guard our coasts, willing to give my life if necessary. I had just selected my three most favorite brushes to use, when I heard them announce on the news that a plane had just hit the first tower. I stood frozen watching in disbelief. As I watched the devastation, my thoughts were that it was a horrible accident. When the second plane hit, I knew that something was terribly wrong. I went into the livingroom to sit down. It was then that I heard that a third plane had struck the Pentagon. I began to shake. I called our neighbor and asked if she thought it was Armegedon. I stayed on the phone with her, because I was alone, and felt more alone than ever before in my life. My husband was at work. I called him and said I thought he should leave work and come home right away. We live close to Los Alamos Laboratory, and I was wondering if I should leave for my own safety. I was concerned that more planes were coming, and when the news announced another plane was still heading at a high rate of speed, it made my skin crawl. My in-laws live in Pennsylvania. I called them to see if they were okay. Then I learned that the third plane had crashed there. At the end of the day, I was too terrified to leave the television screen. It felt unsafe to not be listening to the news at all times. I cried, and then I got angry. We have farm animals, and it took everything in me to go outside and care for them that day. I was glad I did finally, because when I saw that they were still there, I had something "normal" to cling to. When I could breathe again, the first thing I found myself doing was frantically trying to find our American flag. I couldn't find a place to put it up fast enough. The minute I finished doing so, there was another sense of relief. It took me nearly two weeks to walk back into my studio. I was so depressed. I kept telling myself that everything was "normal", but I couldn't accept it. Only when I decided that nothing was "normal", did I find the strength to carry on. I admitted to myself that things would never be the same, but I would learn to deal with the change in my country, and the change in myself. When I returned to the studio, there on the table were the three brushes still sitting on my work table in the same place they were in at the first moment of 911. I had to muster up all my courage to remove them and begin again. It was through the words of our President that inspired me to do so. I was so proud of him I wrote the White House and thanked him. It was time to move on as best as I could. I did - one artistic stroke after another..... Yesterday at the aniversary of 911, I cried again. I still found myself in the same place - the studio with those three brushes. This time was different. The tears were flowing down my face, but the determination to continue to work through it filled my heart. I will not let the terrorists win. I don't know what will happen next. But I do know, I will live my life. I will win the war against terror as long as I can pick up my brushes and paint..... As the aniversary grew to a close, I said aloud, "God, I'm sorry they had to die. I hope they are with You." I'm a better person because of 911. I reach out more to others. I care. And most of all, I try and wring the best out of each day because we never know when everything might change - again. Tell us your story: I awoke to a phone call (about 7AM Pacific time) from my husband who was in Melbourne, Australia on business.It was about midnight in Australia. He said " turn on the television. The World Trade Center has just been hit and I can not come home,(He was suppose to fly home that day on United Air Lines).He fly to Sydney and then after 5 days of waiting flew on to Berlin where he had business the next week. I watched in horror as the second plane hit and then the towers falling to the ground. I felt like I was watching a movie, (but it was real. My children live in Arizona and Idaho, so I was all alone and did not know when my husband would be able to come home, but was thankful that I still have a husband and he did get home about a week and a half later. Tell us your story: I was teaching a group of new employees about our company policy and safety matters when a co-worker came out of his office and announced that a plane had hit the World Trade Center. Chills went through my body as I asked him what happened. He said he wasn't sure yet, as it had just happened, and went back to his office to watch the newscast. I nervously tried to continue the class, but a few minutes later, my co-worker again came out of his office and announced that a second plane hit the second tower. By now we were all filled with confusion and fear, but those feelings only multiplied when Todd announced that yet another plane hit the Pentagon. All of us were in shock and disbelief at what was going on, and we were angry over this spree of attacks on innocent American people. Living and working directly across the river from the Kennedy Space Center in Titusville, Florida, brought along another set of fears. What if the terrorists were planning an attack on the Space Center? What if something like what happened in New York and Virginia and Pennsylvania was going to happen in our own back yard at any moment? The thought terrified me and although I was glued to a television set in one of our buildings, I had this dreaded feeling in the pit of my stomach that I had to constantly look over my shoulder, waiting to see or hear the destruction of the Vehicle Assemby Building (where the space shuttles are stored) across the Indian River. Thankfully my fears were not realized, but my fears were very real, as is the pain I feel for my fellow Americans...for the families that are missing a loved one from their dinner tables; for the fire departments and police precincts who are missing their partners; for the hurting heart of every person in this world who is grieving the events of that dreadful day one year ago. I've lived in the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center for 9 years, and I've always marvelled at the sights and sounds and excitement of shuttle launches, but none was as sweet as the first launch after September 11. Only a couple months had passed, but when that shuttle blasted up and lit the late afternoon sky, I cried. I cried for all those who lost their lives on September 11 and I cried for all those who gave their lives on September 11. I cried because watching that shuttle reminded me that WE ARE AMERICANS and the spirit of Americans will not be smothered, we will not be held down. The days of this last year have just proven to make us stronger as a nation, stronger in our families, stronger in our friendships, stronger in our marriages, stronger in our goals, stronger in our beliefs, stronger in our values, and stronger in our hearts and our minds. We are Americans and we are strong. We will rise above and without shame thank GOD for our blessings. Tell us your story: on september 11, 2001 i was headed for school when i rushed down stairs and found the tv on cnn and at that moment i saw the second plane hit. the newscaster started screaming and i sat there with a blank look on my face trying to figure out if what i was watching was fact or fiction. i yelled at my mom and she told me a brief synopsis, but i still didnt' believe her. i left for school and all of my friends were in a panic trying to figure out what was going to happen next. i went to chemistry and found the tv on and everyone in my class gathered around with their eyes glued telling people to be quiet so that they could get the whole story. the intercom beeped and our principal came on telling us to resume with class. unfortunatly our teacher did, however it was the topic of conversation all day. even though new york is so far away from texas it was just as scary because i know people in new york. people who are close to me and people that i love. it was an awful gut feeling that swarmed my stomach all day. it helped america realize that we are united we stand, but it took an awful attack to make us realize it. I was walking across the living room and stopped as CBS morning news said a plane had hit the first tower. Tell us your story: I was in Aarhus, Jutland, Denmark when my brother called me on the September 11, 2001 and told me to turn on the CNN as they had the terrifying pictures of the attack on the WORLD TRADE CENTER in New York City, the PENTAGON in Virginia and the brave behaviour of/on the flight in Pennsylvania which unfortunately crashed. I didn't BELIEVE him. But anyway I turned on the CNN. There I saw the attack on the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!! I have since 1973 (with interrumption) been a member of the REBILD NATIONAL PARK SOCIETY, Inc. in Rebild, Denmark, who each year celebrates (since 1912) the INDEPENDENCE DAY of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the 4th of July. In 1973 I returned back to Columbus, Georgia, USA after 3 years in Viet Nam, where I experiencede the American Forces, the Viet Cong and the regular North Vietnamese Forces (and members of the Allied Forces who supported USA) in their war. I Have experienced the horror of war! But on the 11th of September 2001 I saw the horror of war once more. What do they think about the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Do they think that the USA are a Country that doesn't give a dammn about other countries? Then I will give them an answer: The UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (and DENMARK)are countries that are filled with compassion for all other countries! I am a proud Dane, but I can't cope with the terrorist that attacked the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA on the 11th of Septermber in this way. I have to say that on the 11th of September 2001 I lost (LOST LOST LOST) a freind in the WORLD TRADE CDENTER. I have known him since the 1972 when I met him in Viet Nam. Tell us your story: I was in the refrigeration plant in tower 1 sub basement 4.I was passing through when I felt a slight shifting of the building.I froze right where I stood and listened....nothing.. about 30 seconds past and to my left about 30 feet from me was a stairway leading up to a door. this door explodes off its hinges and white smoke came into the plant.I later on found out the reason there was an explosion was the jet fuel filled the elevator shaft and seconds later a spark triggered an explosion.i stood at the bottom of this staircase wondering what happened.seconds later through the smoke came people who worked beyond that door for the construction company.they were all secrataries,they walked like zombies not speaking I can smell their burnt flesh.one was bleeding pretty bad and i started to walk her to path train station accross the plant.1 woman seemed unharmed and i asked her what happened..she told me a bomb blew up their offices.when we got to the PATH platform i layed the woman down ,she thanked me,and i returned to the blown door to see if i could find anyone else.Sure enough there were more,.the smoke was being sucked up the shaft now and i can see there were no longer any walls just rubble.1 woman was under her desk refusing to come out.after a little coaxing she came and at this point a few of my colleuges,were sifting through the rubble,trying to find anybody .we did about 3 trips .everyone was out.i returned to the plant and called for ems on the radio(walky talky),I couldn't get through there was chaos on the radio.I switched on the am radio we had in the plant to the all news station and heard "ONCE AGAIN A PLANE HAS HIT THE86FLOOR OF ONE WORLD TRADE CENTER".my heart sunk.I said to my self lets get the fuck outta here.i started running towards the area where we had brought the injured when i see about 9 fire men running my way.they approached me an asked "where are we getting all these people from." I told them over there pointing about 25yards away to the staircase with the blown door.they asked me to show them exactly where and I told them "there is no one left lets get the hell outta here",they told me to calm down and lead them to the offices beyond the blown door.I said "ok lets do this " so we start running for the stairs as we started to ascend the lights went out just the little exit signs over the doors were illuminated.I started to panic .(I found out later on the lights were lost when the second plane hit.)not one of the firemen had a freakin flashlight ,I couldn't believe it ,i guess in all this chaos they forgot them.the firemen in charge said to me,"wait here we will be right back",and just like that they all ran back the way they came .Not 1 of them stayed behind.I stood there at the bottom of those stairs scared shitless ,in the dark ,listening to the eery sound of the smoke sucking up that elevator shaft.Maybe a minute passed when I said to myself "what am I a fuckin' idiot."and proceeded to run past the area where we brought the injured in path station,EMS was taking care of them and for that i was thankfull.I noticed the owner of the deli/restaurant bar was locking himself in . I guess to guard from looters.the escalator leading up to the concourse level was (believe it or not )running.AT this point i stopped and rode the escalator up. Catching my breath,when i reached the top I noticed everyone was evacuating in a calm and orderly fashion.I started to feel a little more at ease.i ran up another out of order escalator to the plaza level and started running towards daylight i noticed debris coming down.as I got closer I realized there were people hitting the ground exploding on impact among office furniture and luggage i was sickened by the sight.I waited for a lull and ran for it out the doors to the open air it was chaos fire engines all over people screaming.i looked up and saw both towers on fire,i couldn't believe my eyes .people were jumping ,I saw a couple holding hands freefalling from at least the 90 -95th floors.I ran to broadway and watched from there i still was in shock,when over the walky talky my supervisor makes a general announcement "all WTC mechanical personnel rally at the pump station".I start running back towards the pump station which is up the block accross from 1 wtc.as i pass 1wtc people are still hitting the ground ,i'll never forget the sound. when i arrive everyones hugging and happy to see each other .i lean up against the wall and slide down on my ass and look up at the towers burning people still jumping. i will finish this some other time i'm emotionally drained just writing this..God Bless Edward J McCabe Engineer October 1987-september 11th 2001 Dublin Core The Dublin Core metadata element set is common to all Omeka records, including items, files, and collections. He was taking me to all the sites that I have never been. I heard of a plane crash on the news that morning upon leaving my home. It wasn't until we reached Atlanta that we new of the rest. I will never be able to celebrate this day fully for so much was lost. My husband and I will never have another first date, but so many will never have another day. I turned on the T.V. just in time to see the second plane hit the South Tower. I was frantic and scared. I thought the world was coming to an end. My daughter was supposed to go to a class at Bergen Community College but I was hysterical and begged her not to go. For the remainder of the day, I felt numb. I was unable to comprehend just what had happened. All those lives lost. My heart goes out to their families. I hope it brings some comfort to the families to know that we will never forget their loved ones.
