I thought of all these ideas & then thought, maybe the best way to pay Tribute is to tell of my own feelings of what I witnessed unfold, along w/ the rest of the world, that in approximately 2 hours, the world as we know it, would be forever changed..... At approximately 8:50 that morning I was cleaning my house. I'd recieved a call from my daughter-in-law asking me if I had the News on. I said "no" & as I turned on the television, she began telling me that a plane (Flight 11) has just crashed into the World Trade Center. As she was talking, I was looking at the screen in dis-belief. Black smoke rolling..... I was in complete shock. I remember saying something like "Oh my God; what happened?" I was trying to listen to her & the News at the same time. I watched in horror as I realized the all people inside the Tower that had been killed instantly. My mind was racing....I was standing there crying & thinking of those people on the floors above where the plane hit. I knew they couldn't get out either. I remember Praying while listening to the News. My daughter-in-law had stopped talking & we were both in tears & in shock. I couldn't take my eyes off the television. So many things were going through my mind. I'd been to those Towers years ago when I lived in New York. I knew Thousands of people worked there. I was Praying they would get out alive. Still wondering/worrying what could've caused the crash. As I stared at the television in horror..... 9:05 a.m., the 2nd plane hit (Flight 178). I said to my daugter-in-law, "We're Under Attack". All the confusion in my mind had just become clear. More tears, more Prayer, more sorrow..... I was glued to the television. Tears, Prayer....All those lives. Reports were coming in....Terrorists...9:45 (Flight 77) hits the Pentagon. It seemed as though the world was coming to an end. Smoke...People everywhere running in the streets. Screaming, crying.....Reports of people jumping from the buildings....Police Officers....Firemen, all called to the scene..... 9:55 to 10....The 1st. Tower falls....Complete Chaos....."Oh My God Have Mercy"......The Pentagon fell shortly after the 1st. Tower.....Then a report of another plane crash in Pittsburgh.....10:28 The 2nd Tower collapsed....People were covered in dust.....Running...People couldn't breathe...Sometime during the mist of all of this, my daughter-in-law & I had hung up....I can't remember if I talked to anyone else. I can only remember those faces of the people who were there.....watching, dying...people running away...Firefighters & Police running towards....Mayor Giuliani....so many things happening at once..... I remember throughout the day just watching & feeling so helpless....I just kept Praying....I cried so much ( And still do).....I thought of my family...friends...Were we safe? I remember such an ache inside.....such a feeling of loss..... It happened on a Tuesday. Tuesday was the night of our Women's Bible Study Group......There was a mention of us canceling it sometime that day I remember but, it was immediately forgotten because we felt; what better place to be than at our Church....My son came over w/ his family....I remember my son in almost a panic.....I remember thoughts of not wanting to scare my grandchildren...... My son was kind of surprised that I was still going to Bible study....I do not claim to know the Bible well (hence my studying) BUT, As my son & I talked, I went to my Bible ( I had no idea what I was looking for...absolute truth!)...I opened my King James Bible to Revelations....I began to read. As I read through it's passages, these seemed to me, exactly what I had witnessed that day......The Bible speaks of the Great City of Babylon that has fallen..... REV 18:8 Therefore shall her plagues come in one day, death, and mourning, and famine; and she shall be utterly burned with fire: for strong is the Lord God who judgeth her. REV 18:9 And the kings of the earth, who have committed fornication and lived deliciously with her, shall bewail her, and lament for her, when they shall see the smoke of her burning, REV 18:10 Standing afar off for the fear of her torment, saying, Alas, alas that great city Babylon, that mighty city! for in one hour is thy judgment come. (I feel I must make it clear that I, in no way am saying that we are living in Revelations. Many do believe we are but, that is not for me to know. I urge anyone who reads this to read their own Bibles & come to their own conclusions (if any). This is just what happened to me that day. I'm not telling you what to believe etc.) After reading this, my family found some sort of Peace. This is the only way I know how to explain it. I was more eager to get to Church. I truly felt my little Chuuch would have standing room only. I wanted to be there if I was needed etc. I really expected Prayer vigils. People looking for answers, as we all were. I expected people looking for some kind of comfort to help ease their hearts. Even if there was someone who needed a hug...anything..... Well, when I arrived at Church......the only people there were the 7 ladies (including myself) who were the regulars of our Women's Tuesday Night Bible Study Group....I was surprised but, not discouraged. Myself & those 6 other ladies had one of the best classes we have ever had & even bonded closer. It seemed the entire day was spent in Prayer. I will never forget this day as long as I live. I will make sure my grandchildren & their children etc. will know that on September 11, 2001 this Nation became One & The World Shared Heart Break As One.... Tell us your story: On the morning of Sept 11, 2002, we were getting ready to head to Bismarck, ND and this was about 7:00 am CST, for my grandson's dental appointment. I had turned on the tv while getting ready, and had decided to sit down & watch the news before we headed out. I was waiting for my daughter to get ready & for her to get my grandson ready. I heard the news explaining about an airplane smashing into the world trade tower. The annoucer was extremely excited & it just didn't seem right of what was happening on tv. I woke my sister, Nancy up, as she was sleeping on the couch where the tv was located. I told her to get up and was unable to grasp what was going on. It was too much of a shock to see that persons had hijacked airplanes & were flying them into the World Trade Towers. Of course we missed my grandson's dental appointment & was not able to get back into the dentist's good graces. Tell us your story: As a volunteer ambulance service, our squad signed on shift at the time of the attacks to cover the EMS shortage in Brooklyn South. Shortly afterward, we were notified by the FDNY Resource Control Center (RCC) to respond to the World Trade Center. Our fastest route took us through the Prospest Expressway to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel. Midway into the tube, we screeched to a hault. Powder and debris poured into the tunnel from the Manhattan side. We thought an explosive device was detonated. We scrambled in reverse to vacate the tunnel as quickly as possible. As we egressed, we noticed civilians walking out of the debris. Realizing the tunnel was still intact, we stopped and assisted in the evacuation of the tube. In all we got over 60 people to safety before being place on medical stanby awaiting victims. No victims were received in the 14 hours we waited. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: Australia is about 16 hours ahead of the USA so I first saw the newsflash at 11pm. My God. A plane has hit the WTC. My big brother is on vacation in NY. He called me from the Empire State Building earlier today. I didn't know where to contact him so I stayed up all night watching the news updates and hoping he'd call. At 6am my time he called in tears telling me he'd lost his friend who worked at the Windows restaurant. "Who's responsible for this?", I asked and he said a name that I hadn't heard before but I think everyone in the world now knows. Bin Laden. I called my friends. Some didn't realise what had happened as they'd gone to sleep before it was broadcast. At that time I had 3 children. I felt sick wondering if any small children had lost their lives. My husband, a giant Cook Islander was moved to tears as we watched people holding up signs showing photos of their loved ones. Photos of happy, smiling faces. People who didn't realise the awful fate that lay ahead of them. Innocent victims in a hateful act of terrorism. On the first anniversary of the attacks my brother was on a local talk show (he's a psychiatrist) offering advice and encouragement to those in need when he announced that his sister in Australia (me!) had delivered a beautiful baby boy. A little bit of happiness on a sad, sad day. People cheered and cried. On the second anniversary of September 11 I delivered another baby, this time a delightful little girl. The lives of my babies can never replace those that were lost but I will teach them the significance of their birthdate and encourage them to lead good, caring lives. We were all huddled around a television when all of a sudden our entire building shook and the lights flickered on and off. Since I work directly across from the Federal Building my first thought was that it was a plane coming in for that building. When I realized it was the first tower that had collapsed I had no idea where or how it fell and I knew there was another tower still standing so we evacuated our building and started walking north. We walked silently with hundreds of other people in shock. It was so surreal, people gathered around cars with radios on, some looking at television sets in windows of stores and apartments. By then the military had dispatched fighter planes but everytime I heard them I started shaking, thinking it was another highjacked plane. We got as far as the Village when the second tower collapsed. All I kept thinking was "My God, they're gone." At that point my focus was to make it home in Queens where I would feel safe. Every building I passed in Manhattan was just another target. It took me a long time to stop being afraid of planes flying over me but even now, hearing a plane will get my heart beating a little faster. It still breaks by heart when I see that empty space in the sky where the World Trade Center used to be and I say a little prayer for the victims who didn't get to make it home that day. I was working in the Fraud Department at a credit card company when my very first customer of the day told me of the planes crashing into the Twin Towers. I didn't believe it at the time what this man had told me. Then the next phone call I received the customer proceeded to tell me about The Twin Towers and the planes crashing into them. The company I worked for at that time was so compassionate to ask if anyone who wanted to go home may do so. I stayed and worked my usual ten hour shift not having it sink in. When I arrived home that night I turned on the tv to witness something I have never experienced in my lifetime. I saw the world in chaos. I cannot tell you how mortal I felt at that time and yet it was not me even close to New York. My heart went out to all of the victims and anyone who knew them. I had called my neighbor and she told me to turn on my TV right away. The first tower had been hit and she told me they didn't know if it was an acident or something else. When the second tower was hit I called my son's school to see if I should go pick him up. My husband was out of town that day and I couldn't reach him. I was very frightened. It was the longest day I have ever endured. When I finally reached him he told me that there was no way he could get back. All flights had been cancelled and there weren't any rental cars avalible. He finally found a rental car the next day and drove the 8 hours home. It was wonderful when our whole family was home. Has your life changed because of September 11, 2001.If so tell us. Yes. My life has changed in many ways. I think about it all the time and worry that my family will not be together if there is another attack. Living on the East Coast close to Washington D.C. makes me feel more vulnerable. I wonder if we would be safer living further away from so many military bases is safer or will we be a main target the next time? What do you think should be remembered about Setember 11th? The people. How many people died because of something they knew nothing about? They were punished because of someone else's beliefs. I also will remember the fear I felt. We as Americans take so many of our rights for granted. I think we should remember all the rights that we do have. Did you fly an American flag after the events of September 11th? Have your feelings about the American flag changed as a result of September 11th? Yes, we flew an American flag after September 11th. My feelings for our flag have not changed. Our family has always flown a flag on patriotic holidays. I think now we fly it more often. If you leave it up all the time it becomes a part of scenery and people don't look at it and get the same feeling. I am proud of being an American and thank God I live in the United States of America. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: My husband called me within minutes of the first plane crashing into the WTC. I had never seen, let alone heard, him cry. He told me he loved me. I knew something was horribly wrong. I told the staff what was going on. The secretary, the director ,and the lead teacher all sat there with a look of disbelief. For the first time in my entire life I felt vulnerable. I also felt the inmense responsibility that caring for children can bring in a situation like this. What of the schools and hundreds of children in that area? What about my uncle and cousins that live in New York? What about us? What is going to happen next? The staff took turns stepping outside to make calls on their cell phones frantically trying to reach loved ones in New York. We also took turns crying. Myself and two other teachers had lived in New York. It was the most difficult day of my life. I had to act as if everything was alright so as not to alarm the children. At that time we did not know the full extent of damages the country had suffered. We knew the the second tower at the WTC had been hit. We knew the Pentagon had succumbed to a similar fate and the rumors of a crash in Pennsylvania were just that, rumors. By early afternoon the majority of our children had been picked up by completely different people. Everyone had aged and the fear of the unkown lay heavy in everyone's eyes, as did the rage and fury. And so began the day that changed my generation. My parents had the assasination of a president. We had the unthinkable murder of thousands. All for what? So it goes, my life. Ive changed professions and many say I've changed myself. Maybe. All I know is that in about two weeks I'm going home to New York. I'm going to say good-bye to an old and beloved friend. And I'll try not to remember visiting my uncle in what I thought was the "biggestest" building in the world: The World Trade Center. I have a feeling that I'll fail at forgeting. Tell us your story: Hello, my name is Sidony and I am 14 years old and this is my story.On the morning of September 11th I was getting ready for school, as usual. At about 8 o'clock central time ( it would have been 9 o'clock in New York) I got a call from my dad at work, he requested that he speak with my mom. I told him she had already left for work. So he told me to turn on the television, so I did. I turned it too CNN, and i saw a horrible sight of the first world trade center on fire and smoke bellowing out from all directions. I stayed on the phone with my dad a little longer. At about 8:10 I saw the second plane hit world trade center 2. My heart sunk, I couldnt believe what was happening. My dad had to return to work, so we hung up. Thats when the building one (tower one) started to collapse and I would say that building two (tower two) had started to come down about 5 to 10 minutes later. Started to cry, I couldnt imagine what those people went through. The one's viewing all of this, the one's one the planes, and the family of the victims. shortly after the towers collapsed I had to leave for school. I was worried about what was happening. I had no idea about the pentagon or the plane that hit in shanksville, pennsylvania. When I got to my first period class, we turned on the televison and watched for about 15 mintues, by now its about 10:15. This is when I found out about the pentagon and the plane that hit in pennsylvania. Later on in the day (after school got out), I went home and watched even more T.V., Its all just a blur to me now....... I remember sitting there in my living room in total shock..... finding out that people had acutally over come the terroist and crashed the plane into the ground killing themselfs and many others,to save the white house. I am pretty sure they had no idea that it was heading toward there, but I think they had a gut feeling. I had never seen the tours in person, but my dad said the were the most shocking buildings in the world. My dad has been to the 104th floor twice. It was a horrible day for my family. For awhile we couldnt get ahold of our extened family out on long island, it was devestating, and thats my story. I hope we all come together and decide to rebuild those towers to show that we are a strong nation and nothing is going to break us down! Ever since 9/11 I myself and many other people are scared that we may be bombed. September 11 has affected our generation because of what it has done to our Nation as a whole. It has put too many people in fear and has hurt people badly, especially those who lose friends, family, and other loved ones. Our generation is constantly being pulled closer together, but not we have all become almost one big family. I feel this way because usually if we would hear that someone one has died that we would kind of bypass it, but now if we hear that someone has lost somebody during this terrorist attack we can really feel their pain. September 11 has changed me because I feel that I have become more patriotic because I feel that this is what the nation needs right now to over come this tragedy. 9-11 has seriously hurt me deep inside to the point that it is hard for me to even talk about it. I wish that we could show Bin Laden and his gang what he has done to me and America. I know that a wrong doesn?t make a right but in this case I really do think that we should fight back and show how badly it hurts inside. Since 9/11 people in America have lost so many loved ones, and people are being so understanding to what people are going through and people in towns were many people lost family members are taking care of each other by cooking and trying to get those who lost people to think of the better, happier times. In conclusion America has been changed dramatically by September 11 and the bombing of the World Trade Center (Twin Towers). People are being very emotional and cautious about what they say and what they do. Around 8am the following day a nurse walked into the room and told me that she was suprised that I wasn't watching t.v. I turned on the t.v. to see each of the twin towers falling to the ground. I was so shocked that I didn't know what to say. I will always remember that my son was born a day before something happened that made the world change. Also, my oldest brother, Tim, and his girlfriend were going to Poland around that time. My mom knew that the two of them were flying on a plane similiar to the ones that flew into the twin towers, but she didn't know what route they were taking to get there. I believe it was September 12 that we found out that there plane was supposed to be going to Washington D.C., but they got re-routed so they were safe in Poland. They were saying that a small plane had somehow flown right into the tower. I could not imagine how in the world something like that could happen! As I sat there watching, a second plane came flying into the second tower and paople were running for thier lives and screaming in disbelief! I felt as if somone had jerked a rug out from under my feet. I just sat there frozen to the television. I watched as they kept playing the scene over and over. It made me feel sick to my stomach. All I could think about were the people trapped in those two burning buildings. The horror they must have felt when they realized they were about to die. I then thought of my own family, safe and secure. I felt very selfish because I could hug and kiss my husband and children..... too many could not. I cried for most of the day....... I prayed that God did not let those people suffer that were on the floors of the impact. Well, a year has passed and I still hug my family a little tighter each day and Thank God that I have each day with them. I wish I could just wrap my arms around each one that lost a friend or loved one that day and take away thier pain and grief. My heart goes out to each and everyone. All I can do is to remember all those that were lost in my prayers and I do that each and every day. I have seen a lot of death in my time, but the only thing that keeps me going is the fact that one day we WILL see them again. Oh.. what a reunion that will be! I had been in the office for 30 minutes when my cell phone rang. It was my mother telling me a plane had hit the WTC. As she gave me reports about it being a possible accident, a second plane had just hit the second tower. I remember feeling a little scared and was thinking if we could be under an attack. I got off the phone, turned on a hand held TV and watched in horror as the 2 towers burned. Then breaking news again, the pentegon was hit by a plane too. Now I was worried that government facilities were targets and I was in one. Security had all customers leave the building and then locked all doors. Later the employees were sent home. As I drove home I thought of the families of the loved ones in those buildings and planes. I began to wonder how many lives must have been lost and started to feel a huge sense of loss. I sat and watched TV all afternoon. I remember how quiet Omaha sounded because all aircraft nationwide was halted. I live not far from Eppley Airfield and Offutt AFB (Stratcom), so air traffic is the norm. Later that day I picked up my daughter from High School and as we waited at a red light we heard an airplane. Suprised by the sound we looked up at the plane, it was Air Force One caring President Bush to his next undisclosed destination. He had just taken off from Offutt AFB. My thoughts and prayers were with him as he flew away with the weight of the country on his shoulders. The reported made the statement that this would certainly be on the news all day as she made the report.I was just arriving when I heard the news about the second crash. I am a counselor for clients in a transitional living program. We kept the television on in our kitchen all day and most of the day our staff was watching the news as the story unfolded. We also planned how to help our clients as they heard the news and processed what was happening to our country. Shortly after 8:30 am...while driving to work, I heard the following two statements on the radio..."It's a beautiful day...get out there and enjoy it".....and "we've just had a report that a plane has hit the World Trade Center" Arriving at work, and not yet having the details, I and my coworkers speculated that it was probably a little Cessna or something, maybe that someone was trying to fly between the towers as a stunt and missed. By this time, the TV reports were coming through and we all gathered to watch the news in the bosses office. We saw the second plane hit and knew it was not an accident, but that we were under attack. People were trying desperately to verify the whereabouts of friends and relatives who worked downtown. Around 10 am, our pension department received a call from a retiree, who, knowing that Fiduciary Trust (located in the Trade Center) was the issuer of the pension checks, wanted to know if the attack would affect his receiving his check! About an hour after this, while I was outside the back door smoking a cigarette, a limo pulled onto the side of our building, three 25-30 year old men in disheveled suits with ties loosened got out, and proceeded to urinate by the bushes. One of them said to me "don't mind us...we were lucky to get out of the city!" My own reaction to the attack suprised me...I have always been interested in History, and often thought how it would be to go back in time and witness a historical event...but that day I did NOT want to drive toward Manhattan to see what was happening...all that was important to me was to get home safely and be with my wife. I thought oh my god this is unbelievable. At the same time same time my cousin called to tell me that she saw the plane fly by her office window. Her sister, Lashawana Johnson worked in the towers and so she immediately called Lashawana to tell her to get out of the building. Lashawana told her sister that they were told to stay in the office. Tawana pleaded with her sister to get out and Lashawana told her that she would. The last anyone heard from Lashawana was when she called her mother (my aunt) but got her brother instead and told him that she loved him and to take care of her children. See Lashawana had 3 wonderful kids the youngest had just turned 2. She would go to work 6-7 in the morning to start her work. She would be there to see the sun rise and set. I miss her terribly. The whole family misses her. There is no closure for my aunt and some of my family members because we did not have a burial. We cannnot go and visit a grave. The second plane hits, all I can remember is saying over and over "uh my God". We start watching the Sears Tower, wondering if this skyscraper is next. I watch the tower starting to buckle. Horrified. I tell my friend, the buiding is going down, look at it starting to lean, then they collapse. we keep watching the TV then the Sears Tower. We couldn't turn away. Scott decides to go to the convention center. I ran a mile to Navy Pier where my father worked. We sat together watching the TV in the block house, they start to close down the Pier and tell everyone to go home. Its 11:30a, we leave the Pier and the entrance to the water treatment facility next door is blocked by rows of salt trucks and guarded. I feel so lost, I'm with my Dad, if something goes wrong, we're together. I'm trying to see the Sears Tower. We're leaving Chicago, the expressway is empty. so strange. We stopped at a pet store, we didn't know how to comprehand what just happened. We were lost, not knowing what to do, how to act. We stopped at a corner tavern, had some beer glued to the TV for 3 hours. 3pm, 10 of us all glued to the TV. So lost. 2 days later, my boss and I rented a car and drove back to Florida. I can remember everything, every detail. The world changed on 9/11. My heart goes out to all the moms, dads, sisters, brothers, friends that were lost that day. Now I'm mad. I thank every service person I pass at airports, thanking them for their service and protecting my family.
