Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was working in a dental office on the morning of September 11. We had just started seeing our first patients of the day, when one of them came in and told us that one of the trade towers had been hit by a plane, but the news didn't have all of the details yet. At first we thought it may have been a small personal plane that had flown off it's flight course and were sorry to hear of the accident. We had no idea of the real tragedy until a few minutes later when all of the radio stations started reporting on what happened. We were all stunned! Then the second plane hit and everyone in our office was paralyzed. After this we all knew nothing was going to get done that day. We are located near a Circuit City store and some of us went in to watch what was going on. As I stood in the store and saw the towers collaspe the reality of all of those people dying hit me and I couldn't control my pain for all of the lives lost. I stood there among dozens of others sobbing at the tragedy. Once the towers collasped, we called all of our appointments for the day to cancel them and went home to be with our families. As the day went on and the other planes crashed, we couldn't take our eyes off the television. Once we found out these were all terrorist attacks we were fearful for our family around the country. Who knew where they were going to strike next? Living in Richmond, we're only a few hours from Washington, D.C. and several other major cities that could be targeted for terrorism. My family is on the west coast and was dreadfully worried about our safety. I, however, was just as worried about them, as they live close to a major west coast city and about an hour from a nuclear power plant. That day changed many of our lives forever. I have always been proud to be an American, but to see Americans pull together and support each other after this national tragedy made me even more so. I lived out of the country for a few years and took some abuse about being an American, but people knew not to go too far, because we Americans are a very proud people and aren't about to let anyone tread on our great country. This tragedy may have been a wake-up call that we may not be as indestructible as we thought we were. It has, however, shown that Americans love their country, each other, and what the United States stands for. Our true American spirit is more evident than ever! We mourn the loss of the people who died on September 11 and pray for the families who have suffered. There is no room for forgiveness for those that caused this tragedy. We have let everyone know that we are still the greatest country in the world and will not take this ordeal lying down. I am more proud to be an American than ever before and love this great country that we are blessed to live in. The morning of September 11 changed all of that. I sat in 3rd period physics class with my friends and fellow classmates, shocked and confused by the events which were taking place as we watched the television. After the first plane hit the World Trade Center, I thought it was over; we all thought it was a devastating accident. But no. The second plane hit, and then the Pentagon. Then, later on, Pennsylvania. I knew America was under attack, and my care free life as a teenager would take a turn for the worst. However, as horrible and traumatic the events of that day and the weeks to follow, one thing got me through. My faith in the Lord my Savior, and the many testimonies of faith given by survivors of the World Trade Center and the courageous rescue workers, widows, and many others. Although I cried many tears and heard many heartbreaking stories, I believe that God will deliver America from these trials and tribulations. September 11 will always be a tragic memory that has been instilled in me forever. But America will live on. I decided to turn on the news (b/c that's the only channel I got in my room) to get a break from Vascal's Principle and atomic theories. In the middle of the newscast, they cut to a shot of my hometown...New York City. It took me a minute to realize what was going on, but there it was. Someone had the nerve to destruct our nation with our own planes. I couldn't tell if I was more angry or upset. That whole day, all I did was try and get a hold of my family up north, and we all know how impossible that was. I was thinking of all the worst, but hoping for the best. 3 days later, I finally got a phone call through, and it turned out that everyone in my family was alright. One of my Uncles, who worked in the trade center was overseas on a business trip. Another uncle who is a firefighter for Lower Manhattan was fine, but most of his ladder company was not that lucky. And my cousin, who is a cop for the NYPD, was able to make it out with only minor injuries...his partner was not that lucky. That day is definitely a day that will live in infamy with all of us...especially my genereation. For my grandparents, they will always remember where they were and what they were doing at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. For my parents, they will always remember exactly where they were when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated. But there is no doubt in my mind that I will always remember that moment when every emotion possible rushed through my body. I've come to believe that one of the only things that got me through that day were my friends. I was unable to get in touch with my family, and that is the scariest feeling in the world. September 11, 2001 was a horrific and tragic day for our nation. And no matter how much hatred we feel towards opposing nations, and although it greatly upsets me that it took something like this to bring our nation together, all I hope for is a stand of unity and a sense of peace...at least today. My heart bleeds for everyone out there that lost a loved one. Just know that they, in their own way, served their country well and died an incredible heroic death. We had a break and I saw all the teachers gathering around in the hall way talking. I wanted to know what they were all talking about so I walked over and listened to them. I heard one of them say, "a plane just flew right into the World Trade Center." I thought she was talking about a dream she had that night or something. Little did I know. We receive a call to turn on the television there were reports of a plane hitting the World Trade Center. We all thought there was no way that could happen so we all thought it was a joke. We had all the children to sit down for their routine snack time while the director went into a seperate room and turned on the television. To our disbielf the north tower was in deed on fire. The childrens laughter and talking in the next room brought us back to reality and we began our plans on how to keep the children safe and calm. We had no idea what the television was about to show us. Yet another plane and this one had hit the south tower. We all thought no that was just a replay of the video. Until the news reporters all began to tell the horrifing story of the second plane. The children were scheduled to have their outside play time. We had made our decisions, let the children play outside but keep all eyes and ears open. Parents began calling to question if we had heard and to ask if their children were safe. Many began to pick up their children and go home yet none of us knew what was going to happen next. We were all sitting there... and Mrs.Cannon told us she just heard about the attacks on the radio. I didn't know what to think but I was in total shock. No one knew it was coming. My class didn't know what she was going to tell us. The whole day we just waited for more news about it all. It was hard to understand it especially since I was in a school and couldn't just turn on the news and listen about it. The attacks have changed my life. I was at work and the doctor i worked for told us of the first plane and we couldn't believe such a terrible accident could have taken place but as we turned on the television just before the second plane hit we watched in horror. As we watched the second plane hit it felt as though someone kicked you as hard as they could in the stomach. I was so scared and confused with what was going on I was frozen. After realizing the great amount of loss in lives we were gonna have and hearing of the other 2 planes crashing the world felt like it had just stopped. My first instinct after i was able to move my feet was to run as fast as I can and get my daughter and hold on to her as tightly as I could. Even though we were not directly involved with losses the pain was sharp in your heart. I felt dazed for the entire rest of that day and I creid for several months later. Even though no one I knew perished that day I still felt a deep sorrow for the thousands of people who did lose someone. As time went on and things started going back to as much a normal state as possible, the pain in my heart stayed. To this day I cry and I pray for those who were lost and for those who lost someone. This event is something truly hard to understand because it was senseless. We lost many mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, sons and daughters all because we stand for freedom and it made no sense. I don't think we will ever fully understand why this happened to our country nor do I think we will ever fully recover. One thing I do know for sure is I hold my child a bit closer and hug her a bit tighter and I never ever forget to say I Love You to anyone I care about. To those who lost loved ones on that horrific day we will never be able to say we know how you feel or what you are going through, but we can say our prayers will always be with you and your losses will never be in vain because we will never forget. I asked him what was such the rush. He said that something happened in New York and that it was really serious. The first thing that I could think about was my friend who was on a business trip in New York that day. His hotel was right across the river from the incedent. I didn't have a TV there, but she told me what was happening and I immediately turned on the radio to 101.1 to listen in. I knew we were going to war and called my fiance at work. He worked at the airport in Houston, Texas. He is a Marine, reserves. He said they were watching on the TV in the break room. I was so afraid, for our country, for my children, and for him. I will never forget that feeling, it was like my world fell apart. And I was so far away, I had no family involved. Tell us your story: I'd been in the office for a couple of hours already, and some of the other members of staff were just arriving for the day, when someone walked in to say a plane had hit one of the twin towers. The first impression most of us had was that it was a small private plane, thrown off course by a stricken pilot. So we proceeded on with our day. When she returned a few minutes later to say the other tower had been hit, our impression of the event began to change--obviously this wasn't a coincidence--and yet the scale seemed fairly small. It was inconceivable that this could be something large enough to do serious damage. I called my wife (a New York native), who was still at home and asked her to pop on the television. The horror in her voice as she saw the first images suggested that this was far more than a couple small planes. The staff variously turned on radios and small television sets, and began searching for information on the Internet. The initial fragmentary reports of evacuations from various buildings in Washington--including the Capitol, which is just four blocks away--created a rising sense of panic in the staff. When the plane struck the Pentagon shortly thereafter, we were swept up in the general panic. One of the ephemeral aspects of the event that is often forgotten, is the wave of false reports that swept D.C. as smoke began to rise from the Pentagon. Because of the short buildings in the city, and the exceptional clarity of the weather, a number of people clearly looked out their windows and saw the smoke without a good sense of perspective. Combined with the rumble of trucks through the city streets, people were calling in reports of bombs going off all over the city, including Capitol Hill. A number of the staff felt convinced that they had heard and felt the reported "explosion" on Capitol Hill. So the horror of the events unfolding on TV became fused with a very real sense of personal danger. At the time, the actual collapse of the towers became lost in the sensory overload of the moment. Gradually, as the false reports were discounted the overwhelming tragedy of the events began to take hold, we began to focus on a desire to get home. The office officially closed around 11:00, but I hung around the office until around 2:30--the roads were jammed with traffic, and my subway ride home takes me under the Pentagon, so the office seemed like the only sensible place to be. So I spent the afternoon answering e-mails and calls from friends and colleagues elsewhere in the country, curious about what was going on in D.C. When I finally left, the most striking thing was the quiet. The normal noises of Capitol Hill were largely absent. Many of the residents seemed to be out on the front steps of their townhouses, talking in hushed tones into their cell phones or to their neighbors. Walking to the Metro I discovered that most of the major routes had been closed by the Capitol Hill police, who had set up flares and positioned vehicles across the main intersections. The enormity of the day was reinforced on the subway ride home, as we emerged from a tunnel by National Airport, you could see that it was completely devoid of life, save for a few police vehicles. And glancing back the way we had come, you could still see the edge of smoke rising from the Pentagon. I wrote what I felt those two days in order that in the future my children and grandchildren would be able to understand the true emotional rollercoaster I, and every other American was on. History books can't describe everything. I just wanted to document how I felt. I have only read my writting once in the past year and don't enjoy reliving the memory. My little hand held alarm went off at around 6:00 am in the morning and being the lazy teenager that I am I hit the snooze button over and over again. I thought why oh why are people calling when I am trying to sleep. I now of course consider my sleep a selfish act on that horrible morning. I finally rolled out of bed around 20 minutes till 7am. I answered my cell phone, which had been ringing for some time. It was a friend on the phone and just wanted to know if I could go out to eat with her after school. I said yes but was interrupted by her when she said something was happening and to go watch the news. I said okay and hung up the phone. I thought it was odd that my Dad was already up as I noticed my parents bedroom door was open and the room vacant. I rushed down the stairs to meet my Mom and Dad in the living room. I looked at both of them before I looked at the TV. My mom who was on the couch and my Dad in a chair turned and gave me the worst look one could get. The look of terror on your own parents face is something no one should ever see. My mom and I watched the news while my Dad talked to my Uncle on the phone. We didn?t know what to think but the terror wasn?t over. I heard my Dad on the phone say ?yes, yes I see.? And then his face went white. He looked over at my Mom and I an said ?they just hit the Pentagon, they just hit the Pentagon.? The warm fresh tears gushed down my face. My mom and I clenched each other?s hand as I sat down on the floor next to her. My mom and I then continued to mutter out prayers to God tears still covering my face and rolling down onto my pajamas. After talking to my Uncle a bit more my dad hung up. He looked over at my mom and I once again and in a low and horror stricken tone said, ?We are under attack, America is under attack.? I sat with my parents for a few more minutes wondering what was going on. The weirdest things rushed through my mind but also the most common thoughts. What was going on? Who is doing this? And my main thought was, Is this the end of the world? I knew I had to get going and get ready for the day. Leaving my parents, ?my guardians?, and for a seventeen year old my ?soul source of strength? was difficult but I went up stairs to get ready for the day anyway. While in my room I turned on the TV and saw what I think will forever stay in my memory. The news coverage was very up to date and as I stood watching in my room they were interviewing over the phone an on the spot reporter. She was saying how horrible the crash was. At that moment she all of the sudden screamed and in a horrific voice said, ?oh my God it?s another.? At the same time I saw live on TV the ruble of the second crash into the south building rushing toward the ground. I don?t know why but my mind just went blank. I think I may have been in shock or maybe my fear was too great to even think. For a moment in time I Courtney Johnson thought of nothing, said nothing and felt nothing but blankness. Once I came out of my ?moment?, I scatted to the stairs and yelled down ?they hit us again, watch the TV.? By this time everyone on TV could only say, oh God, oh God! After throwing on some clothes I told my parents good-bye and started toward the door. My dad didn?t know why I was going but I said it was only for 2 hours and I would be home. I had an early release day already so I wouldn?t be gone long. I was wrong. Those 2 hours seemed like an eternity. On my way to school I listened to the radio. The DJs all sounded shocked and confused. Most were shaken and trying to compose themselves as they talked over the radio. My dad called to let me know that I shouldn?t drink the water at school just in case. When I hung up with him over my cell phone I wanted to turn and go home but I thought no keep going Court. I pulled up to school and rushed into my class. To my surprise no TV was on, no radio was on and school was going on as usual. I begged and begged to hear something but we couldn?t get anything over the TV. My teacher finally got through on the internet and we heard the latest. A plane had gone down in Pennsylvania. All I could think of was the dead, the families of the dead, and where my future was going. Some students seemed to care while other obviously didn?t understand at the time what was going on and the reality of it. For some reason I felt such a strong pull toward my fellow classmates. I just wanted to embrace them all. Many boys in my psych class began to worry as talk of war came about. Being overly dramatic teenagers everyone thought oh no, they?re going to reinstate the draft. The look on the boys face was like nothing I have ever seen. They all of the sudden looked like men willing to fight but at the same time looked like young boys just fresh out of middle school. I wanted to just picture for a moment a good thought. Boys playing ?America?s favorite pastime sport? or coming up all muddy from the creek with smiles on their faces because of the days small catch. But my innocent mental picture was shattered at the voices of teachers (those who were talking about the tragedy) saying our lives are forever changed. Changed? I thought. What is going to happen? I left school with a very uneasy feeling in my stomach. This was too much for a mostly cheerful youth like me to be going through. How selfish It thought I was to think of myself while people, my fellow Americans, and my friends? families where being torn apart. I barely remember the 20-minute drive home but what I recall seeing were all of our U.S flags flying at half mass. That is what did it for me. I broke down. The land of the free, the land where I thought I was safe, and the bubble I thought I had around me was now popped. Tears once again rushed down my young cheeks. The same cheeks tears rolled down over when I got a bad grade, or over a boy , or even a joke so funny I cried out of laughter. Never had those cheeks of mine been covered with tears of fear for our country. Never did I think they would. When I got home my parents were in the same state as when I left. They were even in the same physical spots on the couch, and in my Dad?s usual chair. I had a bite to eat and sat down on the couch to watch the day?s events over and over on the news. I must have been so tired and so emotionally exhausted that I fell asleep. I know I dreamt about the horror but I don?t know what I was dreaming because I kept waking up to the sounds on the TV. When I woke up my dad was leaving for work. He seemed so sad, so lost, yet so strong and stable for my family and me. I was supposed to go into work that day but all Starbucks had been closed nation wide. I was relieved to hear that because I was in no state to go be ?Mary Sunshine? and act as though things were all okay. I kept watching the news that day and kept becoming more and more depressed. Finally that night I decided to go visit a friend. I knew she could cheer me up and we could forget for a moment what was going on and why our childhood was over. We lay outside that night looking at the stars and finally having a cheery ?girl chat?, but our innocent giggles ended when we noticed 5 or 6 planes in the air. They were moving very fast and we knew they must be the military. Once again the sadness just took over our hearts. I decide to head home. When I got home I watched the news more but knew that I needed some sleep. I went up to bed to rest and prepare for the days to come. That night I slept with my door open so I could have the feeling of safety knowing my parents were just down the steps. As I laid in bed I couldn?t but feel upset that I was able to get a warm bed, I had a full stomach, and I didn?t have to get up that next morning and make decisions for our country as a whole. I didn?t have to worry about losing my mom, dad, or sisters. I was lucky. God spared me. As for now the day after, I don?t know what to think or to feel. I wasn?t directly involved or hurt. I?m not even close to the horror. I just wish I could do something, as most people do but can?t. I can give blood I know and I will but what I know I can do is pray, and pray I will. I really don?t know what will happen now. I keep wishing this wouldn?t have happened but that is denial and I won?t get caught up in that. What I will do is keep moving on with my life. I will keep going for the ones that can?t. I will be one of the many American?s who show the evil of the world that they may put a boulder in my path of life but I will climb over that boulder and keep marching on with my head high. I am seventeen and I have lived a short life. It has been sheltered and I am loved. I can?t relate to many experiences people have had and most would consider me a naive child. I don?t care. I know I am an American and I know I love my country. If I can get shivers every time I hear our National Anthem then I know I love my land. I don?t have the knowledge of many but I have the love and that is what will keep my strength and support of our country and government going strong. "Did you hear what just happened?" She was in hysterics. Of course, neither my doctor nor I knew what was going on because we had been too busy talking about my problems... :-) When I left the office, I entered a tide of people leaving the downtown area, panicked and confused. A cacophony of horns and sirens filled the air as traffic haphazardly crawled along the streets leading out of the city. I seemed to be the only one not on her way to Virginia. I continued making my way up Connecticut on what to me seemed to be a lovely day weather wise. I had yet to find out what had occurred. About one block later, there were three construction workers huddled around the 12" black and white television set they had placed on the sidewalk. I paused to inquire what was going on...I was then informed of the attack. I stopped by a local market, bought some olives, cheese, bread, pastries, and wine. Walked over to a friend?s apartment off the Circle, where I telephoned relatives to let them know I was okay, listened to the radio, napped on her couch, and waited for the second foot to fall. Tell us your story: katherine biller junior in high school I can remember exactly what I was doing on 9-11 but at the same time it's a blur, one big mess of a blur. I was a sophomore in Niceville High and it was just another day and the bell had just rung for 5th period to start and I had Mrs. DiCesare, English 2. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary and we were getting going on an assignment when the phone rang in her room. We had another teacher in there too by the name of Mrs. Murphy and if one of them was buzy the other would take over. Well Mrs. Murphy started to teach the class while Mrs. DiCesare answered the phone. Now in my mind I was thinking "Okay no biggy this happens all the time and then Mrs. DiCesare will just pick up where Mrs. Murphy left off." When Mrs. DiCesare hung up that phone nothing in the world could have prepared me for what happened next. She ran over to the T.V. and turned it on to a channel showing smoke coming from a building and like all news I wasn't interested at first (my dad had always told me to watch the news and learn something educational, not cartoons) then something caught my eye, a plane ran into another building right beside the first. Something flashed on the screen saying "Second of Twin Towers Hit". I wanted to cry but no tears came. The room that was always loud 5th period became silent except the gasps of Mrs. DiCesare. My heart went out to her because she came to Niceville, Fl. from New York. I didn't know what to do but stare and shutter the thought of people in those towers. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: When I first found out about the terrorist attacks on the U.S. I was on break between my 2nd and 3rd hour classes at school. I was in a bit of a rush to get to my third hour class before the tardy bell when my friend Sean came and told me the news. I remember that he first told me that a plane crashed into the Pentagon, and then another plane into one of the towers of the World Trade Center. At first, I just brushed it off. I didn't really know how big of a deal it actually was or why he was so "anxious" to tell me. I knew that the Pentagon was a very important building, but I didn't know hardly anything about the World Trade Center. On top of that, I just thought that the plane crash was a minor accicident that didn't cause a lot of damage. So, because of my ignorance of the true situation, I quickly forgot about what Sean had just told me and focused back on making it to third hour on time. It was in that third hour class when I actually understood what had happened. As soon as I walked into the classroom, my teacher had his t.v. turned onto CNN or some channel similar to it. On the screen was twin tower #1 burning. We continued to watch t.v. all hour, switching back from station to station to see if there was an expalination for the "accident". Then, on live t.v., the 2nd tower was hit, conferming the suspicions that the first plane crash was a direct attack and not an accident. At first, I thought that the 2nd plane crash was just a replay of the first crash. Then i noticed that two buildings were on fire, realizing that I had just witnessed the rest of the attack. It was so awfull. Just seeing the people on t.v. crying and running through the streets. But the worst is when the the towers fell. It was the worst thing I could ever imagine. I was feeling for all of those people that i didn't know. To me, the towers represented the way my insides felt. As they fell, so did my heart and my pride. I mean, prior to this terrrible event, I had the feeling that The United States was invincible. How could such an autrocity happen to the most powerful nation in the world? How could our government/national defense let this slip by them? Continuing from class to class, I couldn't really focus on doing school work, as some teachers tried to make us. I wanted to know everything that happend. The rest of the school day, everybody was talking about the incident in the halls. Then at cheer practice after school, my teammated and I were all trying to piece together what we had all heard. At home, later on that day, my mom told me about her day. She remembers watching "Good Morning America", as she always does. She told me that she remembers Diane Sawyer bringing up an "unconfirmed story" that the World Trade Center had been accidentally hit by a plane. My mother told me that she was a little upset that Diane kept bringing up the bombing in the World Trade Center in 1994. My mom thought that it was wrong for her to jump to the conclusion that the plane crash was a terrorist attack because she might alarm the people. Later on, once my mom knew what had happend, she said that she felt a huge sense of fear. She can remember hearing a lot of planes flying over our house to land at the nearest airport. As the weeks passed by, my biggest fear was that the US would go to war. I know know that, no matter how powerful a ocuntry is, it can be vuneralbe to anything, and i shouldn't take living in such a blessed country for granted . It was a typical morning; I was supposed to be there at 9 a.m. and was running just a couple of minutes late. I was surfing through the radio channels trying to find some music in the midst of the morning drive time talk and commercials when one of the stations announced that there had been some sort of plane crash into one of the twin towers of the Trade Center. I left the radio on that station in order to hear a news update on the crash. The dj was telling what he could glean from the wire reports when suddenly he announced that there had been a second plane crash into the other tower and that if we could get to a TV set, we should turn it on. I was just pulling into the parking lot at work when he made that announcement. I ran inside and ran into my boss's office because he usually had his TV on throughout the day. He was out of his office and the TV was off, so I grabbed the remote and turned on the TV, flipping through channels until I found a news channel. About that time, the radios back in the work areas had begun announcing the news and my boss came into his office to see what was going on. We watched, stunned, for a few minutes. It was pay week; we always got our paychecks on Thursday, although the paychecks were usually prepared on Monday. Moments after seeing the replay of the two planes crashing into the towers and hearing that there were other crashes, my boss gave us all our paychecks and told us to go immediately to the bank and cash them, not deposit them. We all left right away. At the bank, everyone moved in shocked silence as TVs in the lobby broadcast the images of the planes over and over. I returned to work, where we spent most of the day alternately watching the TV and trying to concentrate on business. My 7-year-old son was in school in the northwestern part of Knoxville, just a few miles from Oak Ridge and the DOE facilities that could be a possible terrorist target. I wondered if I should leave work and go get him or if he would be safer where he was since our home was even closer to Oak Ridge than the school was. I wondered about my college-age daughter, who was in class at Pellissippi State, also not far from Oak Ridge. I had no way to get in touch with her to find out if she had heard the news and had left school to go home. I remained at work until my regular time to go home and wondered if my son had been told at school what had happened. As I passed several gas stations full of people all lined up at the pumps in an apparent panic over a gas shortage, I realized that I needed gas and would have to go after I picked up my son. Having to wait at the pumps gave me the opening to find out what he knew about the day's events. I asked him if he knew why everyone was packed into the gas stations, if his teacher or anyone had said anything to him about what had happened. It turned out that NO ONE had told the children at his school anything! They had gone on with their day as if nothing had happened and had left it to the parents to tell their children. I tried to explain it to him as best I could, and of course, when we got home, we turned on the TV and he saw for himself what I was talking about. I remembered being in the 6th grade and watching on the classroom TV the Dallas procession in which John Kennedy was shot and killed. I couldn't believe that the school administrators and teachers had felt it would be better if the children didn't know what was happening. Even though my son was only 7 at the time, he still felt the shock and outrage of the moment. In the days following when everyone was displaying their flags, he took a paper flag that our local newspaper had included in one of their editions and taped it to the living room wall. It was not an elegant display nor did it particularly complement the d?cor, but that flag is still taped to our wall and I would not take it down now for anything. A year later, the emotional wounds are still easily re-opened. One of the radio stations this morning was broadcasting a reading of the names of all the people killed on September 11. I could not leave the radio tuned to that channel for long. It was too painful. I have a bumper sticker on my car showing the Statue of Liberty superimposed over an outline of the country with the words, "Never forget." I will not . . . ever. Tell us your story: The day of 9/11 I was at school im not exactly sure what period or class I was in but my teacher heard from emails from several of his co-workers that a plane had hit into the twin towers he immediatly put on the T.V. to see if these reports were true sure enough they were and the whole class sat in shock as the repoters filled us in on what had just happened not to long after we felt a rumble in the school kind of like a soft earthquake little did we know that was the after shock of the plane hitting the pentagon. Feel free to write as much or as little as you like. Tell us your story: I was a NYC Detective on September 11, 2001. I had worked very late the evening before and my husband had let me sleep while he got the kids ready for school. He had turned on the tv and saw that a plane had struck the Trade Center. He ran up the stairs to wake me up. Both myself and my husband were both Police Officers in the First Precinct and that is where we met. I sat on my couch watching . I watched in complete horror as the towers fell, and then the phone rang it was my office. We had been mobilized into Manhattan. I ran upstairs and threw clothes on and jumped into my tenants car with him. He is presently a Police Officer at the First Precinct. We began our treck into the city. As we crossed the Verrazano Bridge the pure shock set in, all i could see was smoke but no Towers. When we got to the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel we showed our ID cards and were let into the tunnel. About a quarter of the way into the tunnel we ran into heavy smoke inside and were completely unable to see in front of us or behind us. Matt proceded to drive slowly hoping not to hit the side walls or another vehicle. We finally made it through the tunnel and when we exited at the other side i just couldnt believe my eyes. I had worked in this Precinct for 7 years, i had met my husband there and I knew the area like the back of my hand, but i just couldnt fathom what i was seeing. We stood on West Street in soot and papers that were up to my ankles. Papers and debris were hanging from trees, building windows were completely shattered and the whole city was blanketed in a hugh layer of dust and soot. I began to cry knowing that this was total devistation. We proceeded to walk up toward the WTC and as we got closer we could see the hugh steel just standing out of the rubble of where the WTC buildings had once stood. We saw an engine from a plane just sitting a few blocks from the site. I stood there in complete silence just looking at the carnage ahead of me. A construction worker walked up to me and gave me a respirator for my mouth and a pair of goggles for my eyes. I was already caked in dust in just minutes. I wasnt in uniform that day but i was wearing a NYPD wind breaker. I was trying to compose myself as to this horror. I saw my neighbor who had just finished the Fire Academy and this was his first call. I hugged him and told him "If this is your first call, then you better quit for something safer." We both hugged and laughed. We walked up the rubble and stood in a bucket brigade passing buckets from one to another. I was totally numb and the tears just ran down my face. As we were standing there a very loud roar started and everyone started running and screaming. Seven World Trade Center was collapsing. I ran as fast as my legs would take me. I watched as the building disappeared from the skyline. I sat on the ground and prayed to God. A Fireman walked up to me and kneeled in front of me, he put his hand in his pocket and handed me a piece of hard candy. My mouth was so dry and caked with dirt. I just remember looking at him as i took the piece of candy and put it into my mouth. He helped me back to my feet and we all walked back to begin passing buckets again. Pieces of peoples lives were being passed by in these buckets and if i spotted a picture or something i would put it in my pocket until i could turn it in. You could hear a pin drop as we all stood cop,fireman,red cross, volunteers all lined up to help out. At some times the rubble would become unstable and they would sound a horn and yell for everyone to RUN. We would all run but as soon as it was ok we were all back again standing in line passing buckets again. It was one of the Scariest days not only of my life but of my entire Police Career. After many hours and early into the morning we were told to go home as they brought in re enforcements. We were taken to an area where a fireman was standing on a small ladder with a firehose and one at a time we were completely hosed down. I could feel the soot caking up in my hair and on my body almost like cement. We drove home in silence. I couldnt wait to get home just to kiss my two children and let them know how much i loved them. I sat up the rest of the morning watching on tv what was going on, i couldnt take my eyes off of it. I had to be back in the city in another few hours. They put us on 12 hours shifts, 12 hours at the site and 12 hours off. I dont think that i will ever be able to forget this day as long as i am alive.....After many months working at Ground Zero I retired on February 28, 2001.
