Something that would make it easier for you to understand why we as humans do the things we do to one another. Believe it or not, your father was once young and ignorant in the ways of the world.. I was a Senior in High School. I wasn't even old enough to vote yet. For some reason or another, I had walked out of class and headed up to the office. The reason, to this day, I am unable to remember. I remember watching the television as I waited for the secretary to finish with me - one of the Towers had been struck by a plane. The news reporters were speculating, "Possibly the instruments on the plane malfunctioned and they veered off-course, it's simply too early to tell.." Then, less than a minute later - the world stood still. We watched in horror as the second plane turned directly into the second Tower. I felt my eyes begin to water, because at that moment I knew that our world would never be the same. Our country would never be the same. And most of all, our lives, would never be the same. For the next week our eyes were glued to the television. CNN, MSNBC, FOX, all of them had cancelled programming in order to mourn the losses of those people. And while I was so far away - I felt so close at the sametime. On September 12th, your father, Jared Daniel Smith - woke up and drove to school. On my way to school, I saw something that would have an impact on my life forever. It wasn't a huge banner or the words of a saddened President or political leader - it was a small boy holding a sign that said, "We Will Remember." Always remember, my children. Do not ever forget the victims and the heroes of September 11, 2001. For they are the shoulders we as a country stand-on today. They are the memories of who we really are. Always remember the fire-fighters and public servants that gave their lives for people they had never met before. They were our soldiers on the front-lines. Always remember that everytime you pledge to the flag of the United States of America, and everytime you do a civic duty, and everytime you help out a fellow American - that you are honoring the memories of those people who died on September 11th. My life was changed a lot, because you think to yourself, ?Are you really safe where you are if you are in danger? All these things come to mind after the planes crashed into the world trade centers, the pentagon, and sommerset, PA. These things definitely scared me a lot. Lots of people lost their lives that day. When the days started to pass by, I would be afraid when a plane flew over head! I also am not going to attempt to go on to a plane unless I really have to. The reason I wouldn?t want to is because their security systems aren?t really that great. You hear a lot on the news. I especially felt bad when I was reading the news paper and read that a man was arrested by having a gun on a plane, just so he could prove to his wife that the security wasn?t safe for her to go on a plane just yet. But for the love of his wife he was arrested just to show his wife that it wasn?t safe. Even now a year after the tragedy the airlines are still not safe and anyone could probably highjack a plane now that they saw it already happened, because they now that they can get through the airlines security system. Many people were affected by what happened. I didn?t know anyone that had a family member or someone close to them that was at the WTC, but when going to on the internet, I went on a September 11website. I was looking, sadly, at all the people?s names that have died and the closest person was Jeffery Coale, who lived in Souderton. (ten minutes away from here) and I felt very sad. My family wasn?t really effected other than my mom because she was thinking to herself, what is bob (my dad) was in the WTC. She would be another mom with an unborn baby without a father if he had died there. That made me very sad. Other than that we weren?t really effected we were just sad at the fact that all of those people had died in the tragedy. I think that our generation was affected, just about what had happened! Otherwise I think we took it good, because at first we were all scattered and scared at what had happened, but then we came together as a country and helped with funds and raised money for the people who lost members of their family in the incident. About a week after the tragedy a lot of people went outside and lit candles for everyone who had lost their lives, or that had loved ones die, and also just for the sadness of what had happened. I was horrified. Basically this was a very sad day for everyone and will be remembered always. Every one lives we changed and they will be for a long time, until we do something about it. I had just taken my daughter to school and did not have the radio on as I usually do. When I walked in the door, my boyfriend, who was supposed to go into the city that morning but opted to be late, looked at me with this look at said "have you seen this?" Of course I had not since it had just happened. I sat in utter disbelief as I watched the second plan hit the second tower and realized that it was not a replay of the first plane. Then the realization that there were people on board the planes, the towers were loaded with people at work. My heart at that moment must have felt the pain of all those that had suffered. I cried for days as I watch the events unfold and realized all of those that had perished and suffered because of the hate of one man. My boyfriends sister's husband worked right next to the twin towers and it took him 13 hours to get home and about 4 for her to know he was okay. My heart goes out to all of the children, wives, husbands, mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, grandmothers, grandfathers, and friends who lost someone close to them. You will always be remembered in my prayers. I also pray that we never forget the lessons that the loss of all of those lives have taught us. For to forget them, would be to forget those that perished. Stand strong, stand brave and stand free. Always reach out to help those who cannot help themselves. Make sure justice is served. Tell us your story: I was in Nicaragua on an LDS mission, and I can remember that I was getting ready to go home to the USA in about a month and a half. I was getting very excited to go home to Utah. I could also remember that I had stayed awake the majority of the night before, due to a baby that had been crying almost the entire night. That didn't make the morning very easy for me. However, after finishing a meeting in the morning, I went with three other missionaries to a restaurant in Juigalpa at about noon, and while we were waiting for our food, I happened to see the big screen TV tuned to CNN, and I saw the news caption that read "EEUU bajo ataque". Then, I saw the awful sight of the twin towers collapsing after the planes had collided with them. At first I thought that it was just a bomb, but then I had learned that two planes had collided with the towers, and it was the most awful sight I had seen. After that, I began thinking about the dangerous circumstances I'd be returning to. I started to worry that it would be such an emergency that the draft would be reinstated, and that the young men of the country would be called out to war. After that, however, I started thinking about how the family members of the victims would be feeling, and then I felt like the position of the US was being questioned. Many thoughts went through my head that awful day, but one thing was absolutely certain: it was the most awful thing I've ever seen in my life, and I saw it from a completely different country. I was meeting my teacher. When I got to my science class, my hostory teacher ran into the room and told us that two planes had hit the twwin towers. I had no idea about what they were talking about. Iwaslost because I had no idea what the Pentagon and the Twin Towers were. At that time,all the students were outside for bus evacuation. All the teacher came into the science room and turned on the t.v just to see what was going on in New York City. I was still cleuless abot the whole thing. The teachers tried to make the day go by as it usually would, but we all knew that something was wrong. Finally, school was over and I could not wait to gohome and watch the news. When I got home, my parents were already there, and they are usually not home before me, so I was shocked this looked like it was a something really important. My parents, my sister, and I sat on the couch in the family room and watched the news. As we were watching the news, mydad turned to my mother, my sister and I and said," God what is this world coming to"? That's the question that I have for you today. What is the world comeing to? As we waited for our food, we say the amatur footage of the first plane hit the first tower. We were shocked and at first thought it was a small aircraft, but my husband said it was a jet liner. Then moments later, we saw the second plane hit the other tower. We had finished what we could of our lunch and tried to find a radio station the car to listen to. We had ticket to tour a castle that day and we went there and waited for our appointed tour time. There were a few other Americans in the tour, so who knew what had happened and others who didn't. As we waited, we told them and then we heard about the Pentagon. My father is in the military and was with us on vacation. He has many friends at the Pentagon and we began to worry greatly. Some of the radio stations were listening to seemed to exagerating the damage to the Pentagon and Washington DC. Someone else came into where we were waiting and said all of DC was gone. To our relief this was not the case. We tried to watch the news as often as we could over the next several days. The Irish people were very supportive and the Repulic shut down on Friday as a day of mourning. They held religous services and displayed many American flags on their homes. (It might have looked like a small US town around the 4th of July). We did not having any trouble getting home as we had just started our two week vacation, but several other Americans we met had to extend their vacations by as much as a week. I remember getting ready in the morning to go to school, admiring the new outfit I just got and then I headed out the door. I went to the bus stop and me and my friend Stephanie were chatting the whole way to school. When I got to school it was around 8:30, our teacher hadn't come in yet. We waited for like a half-hour. Most of the kids were happy she wasn't coming in, but I felt like there was something wrong. I suggested to my friend Liz that we should go to the office and ask where our teacher was. We did, and when we got in there the new-installed tv's in the office were showing a plane crashing into a very tall building. I was just like, Ok, anyway, I asked the secretary where my teacher was and she had this look in her eyes that something was terribly wrong. I started getting scared. She said that Mrs. Tolstyka was in a meeting with the other teachers. We said ok, and then we both went back to our classmate. We got back there and seen Mrs. Tolstyka teary-eyed and shocked. Everyone was saying "whats wrong, whats wrong?!" and she said that since we were 'immature' 5th graders we shouldn't know. So, I just sat down at my desk and continued that school day wondering why everyone was freaked out. We went home early at 2:00 (we usually get out at 3:15), and we got a note sent home that some kind of thing happened. I don't remember what it said. My friend Stephanie who was a grade younger than me says, "What is this?" and I just told her it was a bomb threat somewhere. and she said "ok." When I got home I went into the laundry room where my mom was, she told me what happened and I never even knew what the twin towers were, I asked her where they were, why did this happen, and so many questions I needed answering. I didn't fully understand, but that was fine with me. I cried at the thought my brother was visiting New York City that week, LUCKILY, my brother and his girlfriend came back from New York on September 11, they left at 7:30 in the morning PASSING the WTC and going onto the Express way back home. He said that on September 9, they took a tour of the WTC and they said it was a wonderful place. I had chills up and down my spine at the thought that my brother was standing on what is now nothing. My mom's birthday is September 11, and that day no one, not even my dad remembered her birthday. So many innocent lives died that day and in memory of it I'm writing a story on 9/11, most of it is fiction, I go back in time and stop everyone going to work or going near the WTC and the pentagon. My daughter was to fly back to her home in Virginia that morning. She was putting things in her rental car and turned the ignition key on and heard that the world trade center had been hit with something or maybe bombed. She came running back into my sister's home and said "turn the television on". The first thing that I saw was a plane hitting the trade center. We just all froze in disbelief. It was second period on September 11th and a plane just hit the first World Trade Building and a second plane hit the other tower and I was not aware of what had happened at that point. During third period in gym class Mr. Sanford heard what was going on and turned on the television so we all could watch. The television showed the planes hitting the towers, all the smoke, and the hundreds of people running with the firemen and trucks going in the opposite direction, which was into the buildings. My first thought was " we are going to war, we will find who is responsible for this and go to war." Everyone in the gym just looked around in complete shock and some were even scared. The next period we learned and saw so much more. We saw the replays of the first and second planes hitting the two buildings. Only a short time later both of the towers collapsed. The hundreds of people standing there watching suddenly ran as the two giant structures collapsed to the ground. After they hit the ground there was still a huge cloud of smoke that prevented you from seeing your hand in front of your face. If you were in New York City then you could see and smell the damage. After the smoke finally started to clear you could see many people walking around with cameras, blankets to help the cold or injured, and breathing masks. Many people with cameras took pictures of strangers helping each other. The stock market was also greatly affected, it had to be shut down for 3 and a half days. President Bush instantly started making many phone calls to the Vice President and the Speaker of the House to find out as much as possible. After they discussed the problem they knew that it was a terrorist attack. The only person they suspected was the infamous Osama bin Laden. The hijackers of the plane were from his terrorist camp in the Middle East. A few hours later all the damage was complete. At this time, the President and his colleagues were on the phone trying to make reason with what came about. The public began to call and start look for their friends and relatives. Both of the towers were completely destroyed and the Pentagon was hit in the army section. There was also another plane that was aiming for the White House. One brave passenger was the leader of the attack on the hijackers. That made the plane crash in Somerset, Pennsylvania. It is now eight months after the tragedy of September 11th, 2001. The mood of the American people has changed dramatically. Before this people forgot about nationalism but now many flags and other American symbols are displayed with pride for our country. The fact that strangers helped each other during this time of tragedy shows that this horrendous act on American soil did not weaken our spirit or our confidence in the United States. As soon as I entered the house she told me to come see the tv. She was watching the Today show and they were showing live pictures of the first crash. As we watched the show the second plane came in. Right then everyone just knew that it was definately not an accident and that we were being attacked. As I watched in disbelief I remember thinking about how those poor people at the top would have a hard time getting to the bottom of the building and to safety. Most of us said "Yeah, right", because this person was always saying outrageous things. But then a supervisor said the same thing, and we managed to get a radio going. People were shocked and very quiet. Then the television in the cafeteria was turned on and we saw that it was true. "Who would do a thing like that?" "What the hell is going on?" "Pray that those people get out safely." Then the second plane hit. Some people were sobbing, because they had relatives in New York and they weren't sure where they worked. Then the plane hit the Pentagon, and the whole place got even quieter. President Bush was just over in Sarasota! Did that mean that our area might be in danger, too? When I got home and actuall saw the footage of the towers and the Pentagon and the crash site in Pennsylvania, the tears just rolled down my face. Even though I didn't personally know anyone there, I still felt sorrow and outrage that terrorism could strike so close to home. My husband was at home and when the first plane hit, he called to tell me what he had seen on TV. I assumed this was a plane that had somehow gone astray. Minutes later, he called back telling me of the second plane and how it was witnessed by the news media and people in the area. The third call informed us that the Pentagon had been hit. Our District Office immediately called and told us to leave our office at once. I began rounding my family up. I knew if America was being attacked, I wanted my loved ones with me. My 2 year old granddaughter, Hannah, was a few blocks away at day care. I had an overpowering urgency to get to her. Once there I found the day care workers glued to the TV watching in horror the events. Hannah had already been picked up by her mother, who is a college student. Hannah had cut her leg in an accident and today was the day the stitches were removed. They indicated she would be back. I planned to rush to the doctor's office and find my daughter and granddaughter. At that moment she pulled in. I remember her jumping from her van, asking me what was wrong. She stated later there was a look of horror on my face that she had never seen before. I told her what had happend and that our office had been evacuated. Her 7 year old son was at school and we decided she should go get him. My other two small grandsons were at the school, also, and we agreed that she would pick up all three boys and take them to my house. A lot of parents were panicking and picking up their chilren, as well. We sat in front of the TV most of the day until my son-in-law got off work. I wanted my family with me. Since the kids were getting restless, we decided to take them back out for lunch and try to create some normalcy in their lives as they were seeing things on TV they had never seen before and we knew it was upsetting. I remember President Kennedy's address to the nation and how scared I was at the threat of nuclear war. That same feeling was with me on September 11th. Is this it? Are we all going to die? We prayed for the Lord to guide us and our leaders and the people directly involved in this horrific attack. Our lives will never be the same. Some things absolutely lost their importance to me. I now live with the notion that tomorrow may never come. Whatever menial chore I am doing may not matter tomorrow. We have become closer as a family, celebrating birthdays, happy occasions, and just loving each other. Today is all we have. I wonder how many people said goodbye to their loved one that morning and had no idea it was the last one. How many had an argument and never got to say "I'm Sorry". I was listening to the morning news and talk shows that I would normally listen to. They interrupted the show to report that "a small plane" had just crashed into the WTC, and that details would follow. I thought to myself that some poor soul who was alive an hour before was dead. I wondered if they (the pilot) had had any indication that they would die that day, 9-11. I called my wife and asked her to turn on the news and watch. The Dallas - Fort Worth ABC affiliate I listen to, cut to a NYC sister station who had a reporter near by and was already interviewing eyewitnesses. I was still under the impression that it was a small plane. The reporter was speaking to someone when in the back ground you could hear gasps and assorted chatter, then the reporter followed with "Oh my god.....ANOTHER plane just smashed into the other tower!" It was then that I knew these were no "accidents". This marked for me the 3rd public incident of my life that I will always remember, and remember where I was. It is behind the assassination attempt of President Ronald Reagan ( I was in 5th period band); The Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster ( I was at home, watching the first televised launch that I had the opportunity to see); and now this.It makes me sad to think others would wish harm on the greatest country that has ever existed. On the morning of Sept. 11th, the other fourth grade teacher ran into my room. Her sister had called and said a plane had hit the world trade center. We were horrified. Then a few minutes later she ran back in and said another one had hit and the pentagon and the officials new it was terrorists. I resisted the urge to turn on the TV. I had 24 little 9-10 year olds who Ii was responsible for and I didn't want to scare them. The teachers gathered out in the hall and were talking in scared hushed tones. "Who would do this?" was repeated several times. I told them i just was sure it was Osama Bin Laden. They told me a day or two later that it was interesting that I was "right on the money." When my students went to lunch, I went back to my room and turned on the TV. I honestly had cold chills as Ii watched the footage of the planes hitting the towers. I choked back a sob, as tears ran down my face. After lunch we were informed that one of our kindergarten teachers had left the building; you see she had a sister who worked in the Pentagon. Fortunately, later that evening the sister called to say she had made it out all right. I think the toughest part of the day was staying calm for the students, and wondering if it was the beginning of many attacks. And in the following days how I would discuss with them the horrible images they would see on the news that evening. Of course that day I went to work with an empty tank. I attend Barker Central High School, which is located in a small town in Niagara County, New York. Barker is mostly farmland; in fact I live on a one hundred thirty six-acre vegetable farm. September 11th was like any normal day in my community. However what was about to happen shook our little town of Barker. The incredible evil that unleashed on that fateful day changed our community forever. I woke up at 6:00 Am and got ready for school. The school bus arrives at my house around 7:00 Am. It picks my brother Charles, my sister Mary and myself up for school every morning. The bus ride was normal. There were the noisy kids that sit in the back and the kids that try to sleep sitting around the middle and front of the bus. Coincidently, my sister and I sit in the middle of the bus. As the bus ride continued on its usual course we naturally picked up my friend Melissa Moore. The bus ride takes around 40minutes to travel from my house to Barker High School. When I got off my bus I met my friend Nick and we walked into the school together. When we entered the school I left Nick because my locker is in another section of the building. After I dropped off all my things I walked back to talk to my friends. I waited with them until the first bell rang. Once the bell rang Shaun, Ben and I all walked down to the Gym. When Gym was over Shaun, Ben and I left and went back to our lockers. I waited for Nick and we went to our next class, which was Band. In Band we were practicing our songs for our concert that was coming up. We had just finished our last song and the bell rang. I walked out of band and I went to my locker and got my things for my next class. After I grabbed my folder for keyboarding I started to run down the halls because I was going to be late for my class. I noticed that all the teachers had there television's on and they were watching the news. I really didn't think anything of it because I was trying to get to class. As the bell was ringing I entered the room and sat down in my normal seat, which was right next to Joe. I looked up at the television because my teacher had it on. I immediately then asked what was going on. She said that two "747's had just crashed into the World Trade Center in New York City. I could not believe what was happening, I thought to my self who would do such evil. As I kept watching the news they were showing the second airplane crashing into the second twin tower. It showed the airplane coming from the east side of the building and when it hit there was a huge explosion. I did not think anything else could happen. Then they said on the news that a third 747 crashed into the side of the Pentagon. By this time mostly every person in our school was absolutely terrified. In my opinion what these people did to our nation was horrific and wrong. Also I think that the people that lost a loved one in this tragedy have it the hardest because they have to wake up every morning and experience the disaster over and over again.
